Conference to cultivate stronger, happier Bahamian families

THE Bahamas Strong Families

Forever (BSFF) organisation is inviting stakeholders and concerned citizens to participate in its upcoming conference that aims to cultivate, strong healthy families.

The first ‘Happy Family Focus Celebration’ oneday conference will be held on May 25 at SuperClub Breezes and will strive to give insights into how to support the crucial framework for substantial and sustainable progress and development of the Bahamian family.

The “exciting landmark conference will inform organisational framework on capitalisation of the family,” said organizers.

It will also feature engaging dialogues on the Bahamas; Road to 50 and Beyond, Path to UN’s International Day of Families 30th anniversary (2024), mega trends and the family’s role in transforming socio-economic/ cultural crisis.

The event will feature various speakers who will highlight why happiness is crucial to the family. They include Pastor Dave Burrows,

Barrington Brennen, (marriage and family therapist) Timothy Rarick (marriage and family professor from Idaho), and N Lyric Knowles, director of Academic Affairs at Genesis Academy and Cheryl Walkine-Alexandra, founder of Marriage Children Family Alliance Movement (McFAM) and BSFF.

Bahamas Strong Families Forever is a social enterprise/nonprofit organisation that was started by Cheryl Walkine-Alexandre in direct response to the devastating blow dealt by Hurricane Dorian and on its heels, the onslaught of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

And after navigating her own personal trials and tribulations, Mrs Walkine-Alexandre knew families would require special tools to heal and recover, just like she did.

This, she said, was particularly necessary for at-risk, vulnerable and low socio-economic status (SES) families, dysfunctional families, fatherless homes, and families with disabilities.

One of these tools to assist families comes in the form of the HAPPY (Harmonious, Abundant, Productive, Progressive and YESable) conference

to help families who may experiencing little hope.

“Families, the bedrock and fabric of our society, are in turmoil, suffering and must be supported intentionally in building capacity through family capital investment as they work toward greater selfsufficiency, resilience, sustainability, happiness, health, and Commonwealth. As we celebrate

Mrs Walkine-Alexandre said she is calling on the partnership to continue to bring awareness of the importance of family as the Bahamas charts its future path.

the Bahamas’ 50th year of independence, Marriage Children Family Alliance Movement and Bahamas Strong Families Forever (BSFF) partners invite your participation/partnership in our scheduled events to celebrate and cultivate families on the Road to 50 and beyond,” she said.

“We cannot talk about independence until we talk about families. We need to look at the state of families to determine how our country has progressed. It is very important for us to look at this.”

‘Young women, the older women are waiting at the well’

Eleuthera retreat to offer judgement-free environment

Under the theme “Young women, the older women are waiting at the well”, the group will meet over the weekend of May 26-29.

The event’s co-host, Stacy Petty Rodgers, said while this is the first retreat of this kind, the event celebrated a virtual inaugural session in October 2021. But now it returns with an in-person retreat, which she will host alongside Vernona Gray Johnson.

Stacy, who is also the founder of the Glory Carrier’s for Christ Street Ministry, believes many young women of today need to be taught by older, godly women without being judged by them.

“It is the very first retreat of its kind being held in my home island of Eleuthera. We have a powerful team of praying, hard-working women working behind the scenes and at the forefront of putting this all together for the kingdom of God. We are so excited to watch everything fall into place,” she told Tribune Religion.

The support for the event from the business community in Eleuthera, she said, has been great.

“We are so humbled that God hand-picked us to carry out this assignment,” she said.

The retreat weekend kicks off with a welcome reception. Stacy said this will be fun-filled night. This will be followed the next day with an island-wide breakfast, free health checks, barbers offering free haircuts, softball games and giveaways that include clothing, water, fruit, towels, sheets and more.

“On the Saturday evening, we have a girls night talk under the stars, where we will talk and discuss intimate, life-changing topics. On Sunday, we have our time with God; a church service that will be held at Ebenezer Baptist church. At the service we will have a young speaker out of Bimini. On Monday, we close with an island tour where we will board a bus and visit historic sites of Eleuthera,” she said.

Stacy believes the retreat weekend will be beneficial for women looking to connect and share their experiences and knowledge with others, whether it be knowledge about business, the Bible, marriage or children.

“The feedback we’re looking for is: for those that are unsaved that attend to have a life-changing experience; for the saved, to bring spiritual restoration and rejuvenation, to gain a lifetime friend, prayer partner,” she said.

From Mary to Kali to Neopagan goddesses, religions revere motherhood in sometimes unexpected ways

(THE CONVERSATION) As we approach Mother’s Day, many groups will hold special events or services to celebrate the holiday. In the United States, Mother’s Day was originally founded in 1908 at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in West Virginia and became a nationally recognised holiday in 1914. The mid-May date spread around the world, though many countries still maintain their own dates and traditions.

Religions around the world use these days to honour the importance of many kinds of nurturing, from traditional celebrations to events that honor modern parenting, infertility struggles or the pain of losing a child.

Motherhood and nurturing are not celebrated only on particular days, however. Many religions include goddess-centered traditions that embrace many forms of the divine feminine as central to their belief systems.

As a religious studies professor who travels with students around the world to explore different cultures and practices, I have often noticed the interest students have in the variety of goddess traditions we encounter.

Asian traditions

Guan Yin, who goes by many variations of her name, is revered as the goddess of compassion and mercy in several different Eastern traditions. Beginning –interestingly enough – as a male bodhisattva called

Avalokiteshvara, the goddess figure was adapted in many different cultures around the world. Called Kannon in Japan and Quan Am in Vietnam, she is frequently a focal point of temple worship and is also considered the guardian of sailors and a goddess of fertility.

One of the most wellknown goddesses in Hinduism, meanwhile, is perhaps the least understood from an outside perspective. Kali is often seen as a terrifying figure, depicted using multiple weapons and dressed in clothing of severed heads and arms. Yet Kali is also an important mother figure who channels her ferocity into the care and defense of all creation. As a manifestation of the primal force of Shakti, Kali is essentially all aspects of motherhood wrapped up into one, often simultaneously caring, loving and fierce.

The triple goddess

In Neopaganism, an umbrella term for a diverse group of new religious movements most popular in the United States, Australia and Europe, goddess figures also often play a primary role. Neopaganism’s various branches include Wicca and Hellenic reconstructionism, a religion that focuses on the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece.

Of primary importance for many Neopagans is the triple goddess, a figure who encompasses the three aspects of maiden, mother and crone. Sometimes these goddess figures are based on specific ancient deities, such as Persephone, Demeter

and Hekate, and sometimes they are worshipped more generally as representations of various phases of life.

More recently, many of these traditions are intentionally expanding to reject ideas of gender essentialism and embrace

a range of identities. For some Neopagans, exploring what femininity and masculinity signify in today’s society is an

important extension of religious belief and a way to include people who have felt rejected from other religious communities.

Beyond the goddess

Many other religions revere mother figures, even if they are not worshipped or considered goddesses. Khadija, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad and the first convert to Islam, is given the title “the Mother of Believers,” signifying her importance for the development of the religion. Devotion to Mary, mother of Jesus, has been common throughout the history of Christianity and remains popular today.

In Judaism, the idea of “Shekinah” has been influential in some feminist thought. Rather than representing a single woman or female figure, Shekinah is seen as the feminine aspect of the divine, a manifestation of God’s wisdom on Earth.

Nurturing and compassion are key concepts in a variety of religions, whether they are represented as specific goddess figures, archetypes of the feminine or new religious developments that embrace shifting ideas about gender. -

Why is a love poem full of sex in the Bible? Readers have been struggling with the Song of Songs for 2,000 years

CONVERSATION)

(THE

Many have heard the expression “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine” – in fact, a quick Google search turns up myriad websites offering wedding bands inscribed with the much-loved line.

But perhaps not all of the quotation’s admirers know that its origins lie in a biblical text: the Song of Songs, which has created difficulties for readers for 2,000 years.

Also known as the Song of Solomon or Canticle of Canticles, the Song of Songs stands out in the Bible because of its extensive and candid sexual content. It is a work of sensual lyric poetry that portrays scenes of actual and imagined trysts between the poem’s female protagonist and her lover.

Graphic descriptions of both male and female bodies pervade the work and are certainly titillating, even bordering on pornographic. Sensual metaphors such as “grazing among the lilies” and “drinking … from the juice of my pomegranates” suggest sexual practices that are anything but vanilla.

It’s not just the emphasis on sex that makes the text unusual. The Song of Songs is the only work in the Bible that focuses exclusively on humanto-human love, not human-to-divine – at least on the surface level of the poem.

Ancient Jews and Christians were troubled by the inclusion of such a graphic love poem in the biblical

canon and came up with their own ways to remedy the dilemma.

Barely a mention of God

The Bible includes other references to sex – including graphic depictions of sexual violence.

And other books certainly contain depictions of human love, such as that of the patriarch Jacob, who laboured for 14 years to win his wife Rachel in the Book of Genesis.

But when other biblical books talk about love and marriage, they primarily use this language to depict God’s relationship with people – specifically, the people of Israel, who have a special covenant with him according to the Torah. In contrast, the Song of Songs may possibly allude to Israel’s

God only once, in chapter eight.

Yet ancient interpreters of the Song of Songs did not interpret this poetic work as a depiction of human-to-human love. In fact, while researching my book about early rabbinic interpretation of the Song of Songs, I noticed that no such interpretations – Jewish or Christian – survive from before the modern era.

Instead, the earlier commentators “reread” the Song of Songs exclusively as a portrayal of divine-to-human love, God’s relationship with a beloved individual or community.

Covenant with the divine Other scholars and I have argued that the earliest interpretations of the

God at Mt. Sinai, wandering in the desert for 40 years and finally entering the promised land.

with the female protagonist, and the divine with her male “beloved.”

Song of Songs appear in late first-century works, such as allusions in the Book of Revelation – the final book in the New Testament, which describes prophetic visions of Jesus’ second coming – and 4 Ezra, another apocalyptic work included in some versions of the Bible.

In the first few centuries, rabbis began to interpret the Song of Songs as part of their commentaries on the Pentateuch, the first section of the Hebrew Bible. The Pentateuch describes the creation of the world and includes stories about the Israelites’ ancestors and their epic journey from Egypt to Israel. Over the course of several books, the Pentateuch shows them fleeing slavery, receiving revelation from

These early rabbis envisioned that narrative as an extended, intimate story about God’s relationship with the people of Israel. And although they shied away from the more erotic dimensions of the Song of Songs, they used its language to depict God’s relationship with the people of Israel as more than a simple contractual arrangement. In my 2015 book, “My Perfect One,” I argued that the earliest rabbis characterized these bonds as deeply affectionate and marked by profound emotional commitment. For instance, in one passage, they interpret Song of Songs 2:6 – “His left hand was under my head, and his right hand embraced me” – as describing God’s embrace of Israel at Mt Sinai.

A lover’s yearning

In a similar fashion, Christian scholars avoided the carnal dimensions of this poetic work. Rather than seeing the Song of Songs as a statement of God’s love for Israel, early Christians understood it as an allegory of Christ’s love for his “bride,” the church.

Other allegorical readings have also emerged throughout history.

Origen, for instance, a third-century Christian writer, proposed that the Song of Songs could be interpreted as the soul’s yearning for God. Similar to other interpreters, Origen associated the soul

Another Christian approach to the Song of Songs was that the poem described God’s loving relationship with Jesus’ mother, Mary.

These diverse interpretations may also have influenced medieval Jewish mystics. In Judaism, the divine presence or “Shekinah” is often thought of as feminine – an idea that became important to these mystics, who relied on the Song of Songs to describe the Shekinah.

Reading the poem today

In the modern period, even more understandings of the poem have emerged, including some about human-to-human love. For instance, feminist readings have highlighted the female character’s power, autonomy and sensuality. Conservative Christians, meanwhile, often approach the poem as an ideal expression of acceptable love between a husband and wife.

From the first few centuries up to today, these many meanings highlight readers’ creativity – and the evocative power of the Song of Songs’ poetic language. -
