The
Associated PressWARREN,
ISLAND (AP) — A nearly 150-year-old stained-glass church window that depicts a dark-skinned Jesus Christ interacting with women in New Testament scenes has stirred up questions about race, Rhode Island's role in the slave trade and the place of women in 19th century New England society.
The window installed at the long-closed St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Warren in 1878 is the oldest known public example of stained glass on which Christ is depicted as a person of color that one expert has seen.
“This window is unique and highly unusual,” said Virginia Raguin, a professor of humanities emerita at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and an expert on the history of stained-glass art. “I have never seen this iconography for that time.”
The 12-foot tall, 5-foot-wide window depicts two biblical passages in which women, also painted with dark skin, appear as equals to Christ. One shows Christ in conversation with Martha and Mary, the sisters of Lazarus, from the Gospel of Luke. The other shows Christ speaking to the Samaritan
woman at the well from the Gospel of John.
The window made by the Henry E Sharp studio in New York had largely been forgotten until a few years ago when Hadley Arnold and her family bought the 4,000-square-foot Greek Revival church building, which opened in 1830 and closed in 2010, to convert into their home.
When four stained-glass windows were removed in 2020 to be replaced with clear glass, Arnold took a closer look. It was a cold winter's day with the sunlight shining at just the right angle and she was stunned by what she saw in one of them: The human figures had dark skin.
“The skin tones were nothing like the white Christ you usually see,” said Arnold, who teaches architectural design in California after growing up in Rhode Island and earning an art history degree from Harvard University.
The window has now been scrutinised by scholars, historians and experts trying to determine the motivations of the artist, the church and the woman who commissioned the window in memory of her two aunts, both of whom married into
Last week, Tribune Religion spoke with readers about their thoughts on the popular Psalm 23:4.
This week, we take a closer look at the following verse, Psalm 23:5.
“To me, this quote means that no matter what, God will be with
me. Even though I may have enemies or persons who do not have my best interests at heart, God will stand by me. In the face of my enemies, I know I
have a place with God,” said Christi Rolle.
Another reader, Katherine Taylor said: “Even though I had the closest people team up against me, God gave me more than I needed. I realised that what God has for me, will be for me, regardless of what obstacle or person may try to come in between. The enemy cannot take my blessings away from me.”
For David Bain, the Bible verse demonstrates
God’s deepest love for him and the intimate relationship God has with all believers.
“In the midst of great trouble, distress and affliction, God lays out and organises a long table of provision and sustenance for each of us. When we are troubled and distressed, we are to cry out to God and ask Him to show the provision and hope he has laid it on the table,” said David.
Tashina Forbes said in front of your enemies or what some people may call “haters”, God is going to openly bless you. She said the scripture talks a lot about blessings and favour.
Michelle Stuart said this scripture can be a great prayer for people who find themselves in a struggle, whether in school, at their job, in their homes or in the public eye. She said you have to know that not everyone is going
to accept you, or love you like God loves you.
“I like to remember the saying that goes ‘Don’t worry about the things they do to you, because hate in your heart will consume you too.’ So, for me and my hardships when it comes to people not accepting me, I remain humble and leave the rest to God. The saying ‘What God has for me is for me’ is a cliché, but it is so true on so many levels,” she said.
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”
– Psalm 23:5
AFTER a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Life Changers Ministries International recently held its Church Development Strategies Conference 2023 under the theme "Positioning for Possibilities and Progress”.
The purpose of the conference was to provide spirit-led, cutting-edge strategies and systems to aid churches and church leaders in advancing the kingdom of God.
The opening night and worship experience was held on Friday, May 19. Bishop Valentino Williams spoke from the message "The Fields are White and Ready to Harvest". He reminded the pastors, ministry leaders and attendees that the
primary function of every church is to depopulate hell and populate the kingdom of God.
The conference continued the following day with general and breakout sessions from 10am to 4pm. Speakers included conference host and senior pastor, Bishop Williams; Pastor Dr Kenva Cleopatra Williams, and Apostle Clifford Smith of Southside Christian Ministries. The general sessions covered topics ranging from “Positioning your Church for Possibilities and Progress through Dynamic Vision Runners” to "Positioning Leadership Teams for Possibilities and Progress”, and "The Christian Church; From Crisis to Unlimited Possibilities".
Break-out sessions focused on specific
areas of church ministry such as: administration, evangelism, the next generation, music and fine arts, hospitality, media and technology, and intercessory ministry, with special sessions specifically for pastors. Overall, the conference had representation from over 20 churches and more than 100 registrants, including Family Island ministers.
The Berea Theological University teamed up with Life Changers Ministries to offer five scholarship opportunities to five conference attendees. At the end of the day, the senior pastor of the churches with the most registrants was presented with the scholarships to choose which member of their congregation would receive the blessing.

Photos:Garnitra PinderTHE multiple awardwinning ensemble Edison Sumner & Voices of Praise will celebrate their 30th anniversary in music and ministry during a live concert this Sunday at the Myles E Munroe Diplomat Centre beginning at 6pm.
This nationally and regionally known group was formed in July of 1992 while its founder and leader Edison Sumner was directing the youth choir at Abundant Life Bible Church.
Edison recorded and produced the choir’s first album. In February 1993, the founder and CEO of Cedgar Sounds, the late Edgar Williams promoted and produced a concert for the Gospel Impressions called “Love 93” and invited Edison to be the opening act for the show. Edison in turn invited certain members of his choir to form a group to perform at the concert.
He consulted with his wife Darleen and two of his best friends, Glen Clarke (VOP’s first music director) and Adrian Edgecombe, along with Ayanna Cartwright, and it was decided to start an independent, non-denominational gospel ensemble and name it “The Edison Sumner Chorale”.
The group became known and performed under this name for several years. They later decided to change it to Voices of Praise. However, this didn’t sit well with Edgar Williams who thought it was a mistake to change the name that had made the group popular. So, his advice was if the name was going to change, at least leave something familiar in the title, hence it was renamed “Edison Sumner and Voices of Praise”.
The group is a dynamic, independent gospel chorale whose purpose has
always been about leading God’s people in worship and bringing deliverance to people who are hurting. The group is amongst the leading gospel groups in the Caribbean and Edison has been regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern Bahamian gospel music sound that made a significant contribution to an explosion of new music and artists in the Bahamas.
The group was one of the very first recipients of the Bahamas Gospel Music Marlin Awards in 1995, as well as one of the first recipients of the Bahamas Artistic Performers (BAP) Awards.
Edison Sumner and VOP came out strong in 1993 and revolutionised the sound of Bahamian gospel music in at a time when people were looking for something different and fresh. They introduced a new sound, new visual concepts to
their stage presence, and a new level of ministry that was not all about performance, but about ministry with substance. They were able to set a very high standard for themselves which allowed others to follow and they continue to maintain that standard to this day.
VOP has been singing together for 30 consecutive years without fail. As standard bearers, VOP has also had the privilege and opportunity to mentor and develop other gospel groups within the country.
In addition to consistent songwriting, recording and rehearsals, VOP has also been blessed to travel and perform in the United States and within the Bahamas with their unique brand of music and ministry.
Their future plans include expanding their ministry reach throughout the Caribbean, North
America and indeed the world. As recording artists, Edison Sumner and VOP have recorded two live albums and one studio album since 1995: “If I Knew Then”, “Joy Unspeakable” and “Dwell in our Worship”.
They have also been blessed to share the same stage and open for many international gospel artists and appear regularly as headliners at local and national events. VOP consists of 12 Christian singers and musicians from various churches throughout New Providence, including Edison Sumner, Darleen Sumner, Marisha Humes, Earliee Coleby, Chanta Cleare, Nicol Edgecombe, Travis Edgecombe, Kendra Kelly, Sheldon Kelly, Danny Nixon, Nolan Rolle and JD Stewart.
Some of the country’s top gospel recording artists, many who are close friends of Edison Sumner
& VOP will join them this Sunday, including Bishop Denczil Rolle & Friends, Davian Chase, Cara T Newton, Necole Watson & Trinity City of Praise, Alia Coley and Oslien Jadorte.
Several pastors will also participate in the anniversary concert, including Pastor Mario Moxey, senior pastor of Bahamas Harvest Church; Bishop Walter Hanchell, founder and president of Great Commission Ministries, and Bishop Lester Cox, senior pastor of Word of Truth Ministries International, where Edison serves as Minister of Worship and Fine Arts. Admission to the Edison Sumner & Voices of Praise 30th Anniversary Concert will be free, but a love offering can be made.
THE National Ecumenical Church Service was held Sunday, May 21, kicking off the “Countdown to 50 days to the Golden Jubilee of Independence of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas”.
The service was held at Evangelistic Temple on Collins Avenue and Fourth Terrace, Centreville.
Leading the congregation was Governor General Sir Cornelius A Smith; Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Philip Davis, KC; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Chester Cooper; Leader of the Opposition Michael Pintard; Chairperson of the National Independence Secretariat Leslia Miller-Brice, and committee members, members of the clergy, senior government officials and other invited guests.
The service was held under the theme: 'A National Call to Prayer,' moderated by Pastor Mario Moxey, first vice-president
of Bahamas Christian Council.
Other clergymen who participated in the service were: Bishop Delton Fernander, president of Bahamas Christian Council with the welcome remarks; Rev Evangelist Rex Major with the ‘Word to the Family’; Apostle Clifford Smith III with the ‘Word to the Future’; Apostle Brenda Pratt with the ‘Prayer for the Future’; Rev Father Kari Marcelle with the ‘Prayer for the Youth of the Nation’; Pastor-Designate Tanya Duncombe with the ‘Prayer Against Crime’, Rev Father Roderick Bain with the ‘Prayer for the Families’.
The service also included the ‘Golden Jubilee Promise’ recited by students; a praise and worship segment by Evangelistic Temple Praise Team; a sermonic selection by Minister Mericha Walker, and musical selections by the Bahama Brass Band.
The service ended with the singing of the national anthem.
Man of Faith, Pastor Vaughn P Miller, preached a powerful message as he admonished the church to be committed and dedicated and to “Put God first at any cost”, which was also the theme for Bethel Baptist Association’s 84th Convocation. He stated that at times life can be difficult and challenging, but we stay the course and remain steadfast and faithful. The convocation was held at New Covenant Baptist Church, Independence Highway, May 13 - 21. Host pastor was Reverend Trajean Jadorette, who is also moderator of the Bethel Baptist Association.
PRIME Minister and Minister of Finance Philip Davis speaks at the St John's Particular Church of Native Baptists in the Bahamas' 92nd Annual General Assembly, on May 22, 2023, at St John's Native Baptist Cathedral on Meeting Street. Also present from the government were Minister
of Foreign Affairs and the Public Service Fred Mitchell; Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs Wayde Watson, and Senior Advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister Kevin Simmons.

FIVE Bahamian gospels artists will be taking the stage at a big regional gospel event.
Barbados Gospelfest is the Caribbean’s premier Christian Music and Arts Festival and will be celebrating 30 years.
The five artists attending are Shannette Hepburn, Christian Massive, Shara J, Prophetess Jan Jones and Rashad Cunningham.
They are all members of DJ Godson’s management company, GodSent Muzic.
The event is comprised of several events generally held every year during the last full week of May.
Dedicated to Barbados, the Caribbean and the international community, Barbados Gospelfest strives to maintain a standard of excellence and has become a vital festival fixture on the festival circuit for the region at large. It features top local, regional and international gospel talent, while also providing training and development opportunities for artists.
“I was initially booked for the festival after the founder of the festival heard me deejay at two events. As a result, I was able to open the door for five artists from the Bahamas that to go and minister with me,” Maurice “DJ Godson” Fawkes told Tribune Religion.
“This is a significant opportunity because, most importantly, it allows us to share the gospel through music and expand God’s kingdom, while also
showing our Bahamian music and culture to the world. Finally, I believe it will open even more doors for us to share the gospel, and allow our Bahamian music to be showcased around the world.”
The likelihood of more opportunities being presented to these five artists, he said, is very high.
“The gospel music scene is huge there, as this festival is highly supported in Barbados,” he said.
DJ Godson explained that each year thousands flock to the event, including some of gospel’s best such as Marvia Providence, Tye Tribette, Israel Haughton, Papa San, Donnie McClurkin, who all have ministered at the Barbados Gospelfest over the years.
“I believe this will be a great experience for (our) artists because it will give them exposure on an international major platform; it will give them a chance to receive more opportunities at other events, because you never know who could be watching and may decide to book them. It will be an opening for even more Bahamians to minister in Barbados; it will allow people to hear our Bahamian music and experience our culture. Most importantly, there may be someone in Barbados that is going through something, and may relate to one of our
testimonies or songs and totally surrender their life to Christ,” he said.
As for the overall experience, DJ Godson said he is hoping that lives are transformed by the experience.
“I pray that at the end of the day the message of God and the love of God is received by the people
of Barbados. I pray that people see the spirit of God in us and make a decision to say ‘I yield, I yield’; no longer will I live in sin.’ I pray that they receive the Bahamian culture and crave more. But the main thing is I just want to make sure that we make God proud,” he said.
Once the event wraps, DJ Godson will be turning his attention to other projects on his agenda.
This Summer, he will be heading to London, England, for a deejaying gig.
“I will also be taking several Bahamian artists with me to minster on the concert in London.
Locally, I have several
events on the Family Islands (Crabfest and Acklins Homecoming) and several here in Nassau. Some of the artists that are travelling will also be ministering at Crabfest and other major events such as Da Crazy Praise Party that’s coming up,” he said.
