AFTER decades of ministering the gospel and having the distinction of having been the first female bishop in the Bahamas, Helen McPhee’s legacy will be celebrated in a major way as she is set to officially demit office.
The Full Gospel Baptist Church, a prominent spiritual institution in the Bahamas, has planned a slew of events to commemorate their senior pastor who has enjoyed an “extraordinary legacy”.
The church said the occasion marks “culmination of a remarkable journey that has spanned decades of unwavering dedication, tireless service and groundbreaking leadership.”
A special gala event and ceremony to be held in August has been announced by the church.
Members of the public are invited to the come out and participate in an event that honours a woman who has given her life to the service of God.
Bishop McPhee was born in April 1947 in Port Howe, Cat Island, Bahamas. She holds a Master of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Counselling from the Universal Bible College Incorporated, in addition to a Certificate in Business and
Administration from the University of Miami. She studied Biblical Studies with the Rhema Bible Institute, the Oral Roberts University, and has attended numerous workshops, seminars, lectures and training sessions from national and international institutions over the years.
A banker by profession, she served in the banking industry for 30 years at the Royal Bank of Canada. She has served on several government boards and civic organisations: the Prison Ministry, Women’s Bureau, the Ministry of Housing, and the Bahamas Development Bank.
She is also the founder of the Deep South Movement of Cat Island, a marriage officer and a Justice of the Peace.
At present, she serves on the board of the Prerogative of Mercy under the responsibility of the Ministry of National Security.
Along with her husband, the late Reverend Edward McPhee, she organised the Faith Baptist Church in 1976 where she served as copastor. Heeding the call of God on her life in 1995, she organised the Agape Full Gospel Baptist Church and was inducted as pastor in 1996.
Bishop McPhee is known as being one of the most influential female pastors in the Bahamas as she has made many strides and conquered many obstacles women experience in this field.
Bishop McPhee was consecrated as the first female bishop in the Bahamas Province of the Global United Fellowship in 2016 and has served in numerous organisations, both on the national and international level, including the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention, the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International as director of Women’s Affairs Bahamas Region, as overseer and international elder, as the executive assistant to the Provincial Global leader of the Bahamas, as the executive assistant of Women’s Division Department for the Global United Fellowship, and as the provincial leader of the Global United Fellowship Bahamas Province.
As of August 1, 2022, she was appointed as the Mother of the Fellowship for the Global United Fellowship International.
A trailblazer for women, Bishop McPhee has travelled extensively as a dynamic, prolific and powerful preacher, coordinator, teacher, motivator, mentor, and counsellor, mistress of ceremony, popular radio and television personality throughout the Bahamas, the Caribbean, the United States of America, Africa and Israel.
She has received numerous honours and awards throughout the years. She was blessed with six children, three of whom predeceased her, and four grandchildren who support her faithfully in ministry.
While preaching the Word of God at her father’s megachurch last Sunday, Bishop TD Jakes’ daughter Sarah Jakes-Roberts proudly snatched her wig off mid-sermon because it was a distraction to the message she was trying to convey.
The sermon, with the theme “Locked In”, was being preached at The Potter’s House in Dallas last Sunday.
I often tune in to the Potter’s House’s Sunday services and witnessed Sarah’s bold move live.
My immediate thought was, “What an unapologetic and fearless woman of God!”
Even though she knew she would probably be the butt of jokes the following day, she proclaimed, “I don’t care,” because the message she was imparting wasn’t about her, it was about God. Sarah’s preaching on Sunday came from the book of Acts 19:11-20 NKJV.
To the congregation that applauded and ran to the front of the church, Sarah said: “I really don’t care, because none of this is really necessary. If the wig stays on or not, if the shoes stay on or not, I know what I’m really here for. I understand that I came here to be locked in on something, so you can make the memes and make the videos. One thing I know for sure is that me and God are locked in on the word, and if this is a distraction then let if fall off.”
The cheers got louder, with a female congregant also being shown on the church’s screens taking her own wig off; not ashamed or embarrassed.
Sarah later took to her Instagram account to post: “I’ve always enjoyed getting dressed up and looking my best. I also have worked really hard to separate my worth and identity
from my appearance. I can be full glam one day and fresh, hyperpigmented face the next.
Today, I was preaching and I could feel my wig slipping. My message was more important to me than maintaining my appearance, so I took it off, locked in, and kept preaching.”
She said what moved her most was seeing how many women joined in on taking their wigs off, showing themselves to be courageous, vulnerable, real and free.
“Literally, wigs coming off everywhere. I can’t even imagine what God is going to do in September when we gather for ‘Woman Evolve’. The message
will be up soon and I’m sure the video will circulate a bit, but the wigs, beat face, clothes and shoes are just another way of showing that you can love Jesus and still be fly. But if I didn’t have any of it and still was chosen to preach the gospel, I would. And I did. And I am. As long as you get the message and God gets the glory, my job is done,” she said.
One supporter in Sarah’s comments said she was literally sobbing as she watched the sermon.
“I can only imagine how terrifying that must’ve felt in the moment, yet you chose to let go and lock in to that Holy Ghost
boldness and ended up shaking the earth,” the person said.
“I can literally feel the shift in your body language and tone of words right before you decided to unleash and not let the moment distract you from the assignment. Because you allowed God to use you, what the enemy tried to use as embarrassing clickbait is really a setup because souls are coming to Christ, believers are being revived, people are learning about how to heal the trauma in their bodies, and pure freedom. You’re so brave. I love you.”
Another supporter said Sarah’s message and delivery was anointed and excellent as
usual, but the moment she took off her wig, she took the sermon to the next level.
“I wept, asking God to forgive me and free me from feeling self-conscious and insecure about my scars (burns) after cancer and a bone marrow transplant. Watching you remove the distraction to pursue purpose reminded me that it’s not about me, but it’s all about the Lord. Thanks for your courage and GODfidence, which allowed you to respond appropriately in the moment so you could lock in and complete the assignment,” she said.
FATHER Gabriele Amorth (1925-2016) was undoubtedly the most famous Catholic exorcist of the modern era. By his account, Amorth performed at least 60,000 exorcisms during the course of his ministry, sparking a renewed interest for exorcism within Catholicism.
Amorth was also known for his controversial statements.
He claimed Hitler and Stalin were possessed by the Devil. In 2012, he made headlines for asserting paedophilic cults operated within the Vatican.
Modern popular culture was also an affront to Amorth. He railed against ouija boards, yoga and Harry Potter, believing them to be a gateway to the demonic.
Now, Russell Crowe’s new supernatural horror film “The Pope’s Exorcist” fictionalises Amorth’s exorcism ministry, adding in a centuries-old Vatican cover up for good measure.
Exorcism and the church
Exorcism has been a prominent rite of the Christian faith since its inception.
During the first few centuries exorcism could be performed by all believers and it played an important role in attracting outsiders to the burgeoning faith.
As Christianity took hold across the Roman Empire, exorcism shifted from a form of charismatic lay-healing into a miracle carried out by figures of exceptional spiritual authority. From the 4th century, the liturgy of exorcism was refined as the early church assumed full authority over the ritual.
The use of exorcism has waxed and waned over the centuries. During the mid-20th century, many clergy thought exorcism had no place in modern Catholic theology.
Vatican II, an international conference of Catholic bishops held between 1962 and 1965,
signalled a move away from exorcism as the church attempted to modernise.
The 1960s and early 1970s represented a historical low point in the practice of this ritual.
The period following witnessed a backlash of conservative charismatic Catholicism with exorcism at the forefront. The work of Catholic exorcists such as Amorth played a significant role in legitimising the modern practice of this ritual.
This growing popularity provoked the Vatican to publish a new set of exorcistic guidelines in 1998 and increase the number of priests trained to address demonic possession.
While many clergy remain sceptical, support for exorcism is present at all levels of the Catholic Church. And in the last decade, the practice has experienced a worldwide surge in demand.
The Catholic Church divides exorcism into “minor” and “major”.
A minor exorcism consists of sacraments and blessings used to treat demonic influence. The priest will usually deliver a prayer, invocation or litany upon the afflicted. Lay people may also pray on the afflicted’s behalf. Typically, a minor exorcism is applied to all individuals being baptised into the Catholic Church.
A Major Rite of Exorcism is only carried out when there is a perceived case of demonic occupation.
These rituals encompass readings of the Psalms and Gospel, reciting of specific “exorcistic prayers”, holy water, a crucifix and the performing of the sign of the cross.
The exorcist might also use “the imposition of hands, as well as the breathing on the person’s face (exsufflation)”.
In this instance Hollywood’s sensationalist depiction of exorcism does at least get the basics right.
Amorth’s claim of performing over 60,000 exorcisms requires further investigation. In his biography “An Exorcist Tells His Story”, Amorth clarified an exorcism was an individual prayer or ritual ranging anywhere from “a few minutes” to “many hours” in length. He could thereby perform dozens of exorcisms per day, usually on troubled souls appearing on his doorstep. By Amorth’s own admission, only 100 of the exorcisms he performed were for outright demonic occupation.
Amorth demonstrated a rather cavalier attitude towards exorcism. In his biography he wrote “an unnecessary exorcism never harmed anyone”.
He also outlined the ritual itself was diagnostic. “Only through the exorcism itself can we determine with certainty whether there is a satanic influence,” he said.
This rationale explains Amorth’s impressive exorcism record.
An enduring archetype
The church requires a thorough medical and psychiatric examination before a major exorcism can be implemented. Canon Law, the code of laws governing the church, dictates exorcisms can only be performed with “express permission” from the local ordinary, a church officer who can execute these laws.
Amorth, however, believed the need for exorcising demons was so great he advocated all Catholic clergy should be permitted to perform major exorcisms without acquiring permission.
Amorth seems to have had carte blanche in fulfilling his exorcism ministry.
Amorth’s exorcisms
Amorth led a colourful life. As a teenager, he was part of the Italian resistance against the
Nazis and their fascist collaborators. After the war, he studied law and was briefly deputy to the future Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti.
In 1946, he entered the Society of St Paul and worked as a journalist for Catholic media.
Amorth’s exorcism ministry didn’t formally begin until he was 61 and was unexpectedly appointed exorcist of the Diocese of Rome in 1986. He enthusiastically took to this new vocation, serving as an assistant to notable exorcist Father Candido Amantini.
In the early 1990s, Amorth established the International Association of Exorcists, becoming its longtime president. The association received Vatican approval in 2014 and now holds a biannual exorcism conference.
Amorth is the ideal figure for dramatisation. He neatly embodies the archetype of the Catholic exorcist: the courageous man of faith who rescues afflicted souls from the Devil’s clutches.
This archetype continues to be enduring. It represents a traditional form of spiritual authority seldom seen in our modern society. If an individual has the power to exorcise demons this can be seen as a validation of their faith, the Devil and God.
As long as films like “The Pope’s Exorcist” continue to perpetuate the Catholic Church’s effectiveness against demonic incursion, exorcism will remain as a viable spiritual practice for the foreseeable future.

If time travel was possible, medieval carpenters would surely be amazed to see how woodworking techniques they pioneered in building Notre Dame Cathedral more than 800 years ago are being used again today to rebuild the world-famous monument's fire-ravaged roof.
Certainly, the reverse is true for the modern-day carpenters using medieval-era skills. Working with hand axes to fashion hundreds of tonnes of oak beams for the framework of Notre Dame's new roof has, for them, been like rewinding time. It's given them a new appreciation of their predecessors' handiwork that pushed the architectural envelope back in the 13th century.
“It’s a little mindbending sometimes," says Peter Henrikson, one of the carpenters. He says there are times when he's whacking mallet on chisel that he finds himself thinking about medieval counterparts who were cutting "basically the same joint 900 years ago.”
“It’s fascinating,” he says. "We probably are in some ways thinking the same things.”
The use of hand tools to rebuild the roof that flames turned into ashes in 2019 is a deliberate, considered choice, especially since power tools would undoubtedly have done the work more quickly. The aim is to pay tribute to the astounding craftsmanship of the cathedral's original builders and to ensure that the centuriesold art of hand-fashioning wood lives on.
“We want to restore this cathedral as it was built in the Middle Ages," says Jean-Louis Georgelin, the retired French army general who is overseeing the reconstruction.
“It is a way to be faithful to the (handiwork) of all the people who built all
the extraordinary monuments in France.”
Facing a tight deadline to reopen the cathedral by December 2024, carpenters and architects are also using computer design and other modern technologies to speed the reconstruction. Computers were used in the drawing of detailed
plans for carpenters, to help ensure that their hand-chiseled beams fit together perfectly.
“Traditional carpenters had a lot of that in their head,” Henrikson notes. It's "pretty amazing to think about how they did this with what they had, the tools and technology that they had at the time.”
The 61-year-old American is from Grand Marais, Minnesota. The bulk of the other artisans working on the timber frame are French.
The roof reconstruction hit an important milestone in May, when large parts of the new timber frame were assembled and erected at a workshop in the Loire Valley, in western France.
The dry run assured architects that the frame is fit for purpose. The next time it is put together will be atop the cathedral. Unlike in medieval times,
it will be trucked into Paris and lifted by mechanical crane into position. Some 1,200 trees have been felled for the work.
"The objective we had was to restore to its original condition the wooden frame structure that disappeared during the fire of April 15, 2019," says architect Remi Fromont, who did detailed drawings of the original frame in 2012.
The rebuilt frame “is the same wooden frame structure of the 13th century,” he says. “We have exactly the same material: oak. We have the same tools, with the same axes that were used, exactly the same tools. We have the same know-how. And soon, it will return to its same place.”
“It is,” he adds, “a real resurrection.”
Eighty plus Bahamian delegates will be travelling to Providenciales this weekend to attend the 49th annual conference of the Anglican Church
Men of the Diocese of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Island.
Held June 1-4, this year’s conference theme is "No Branch Can Bear Fruit by Itself”.
It is taken from Matthew 7 vs 20, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
Members of ACM branches from across the Diocese, from as far north as Grand Bahama and as far south as Grand Turk, are expected to attend.
ACM Council President Gevon Moss expressed his gratitude to the conference committee – chaired by Brother Shanty Richards –on a job well done, as this is the first conference that will be held in-person since the onset of the COVID19 pandemic in 2020.
Speakers will include Stan Hartling, developer and philanthropist, and Jamel Robinson, Minister for Infrastructure. Housing and Planning.
President Moss said this is an election year for ACM council executives.
“Let us pray for all the men who will offer themselves to serve this great organisation over the next two years as we keep God in the centre of our deliberations and efforts, working in his vineyard to bear good fruits,” he said.
Other conference committee members include Don Mitchell, Kenneth O'Brien, Kenric Major, Reina Predelus, Darius Ferguson, Erald Thompson, Wayne Garland, and Godfrey Arthur.
With exams in full swing, it is important that our children are fully prepared to withstand the stress and pressures placed on them.
Teachers advise them to study well, get a good night’s rest, followed by a solid breakfast to ensure that they are at their best to perform well.
And while that is very good advice, Christian parents know that there is another layer to
exam preparation as well: ensuring your child is spiritually ready as well.
There are several Bible verses that speak to performing well and removing self-doubt that can really help your child to do their best.
In addition to praying with them beforehand, you can share these scriptures with your kids so that they can draw strength from their faith during their tests.

The Vatican on Monday urged the Catholic faithful, and especially bishops, to be “reflective, not reactive” on social media, issuing guidelines to try to tame the toxicity on Catholic Twitter and other social media platforms and encourage users to instead be “loving neighbours.”
The Vatican’s communications office issued a “pastoral reflection” to respond to questions it has fielded for years about a more responsible, Christian use of social media and the risks online that accompany the rise of fake news and artificial intelligence.
For decades the Holy See has offered such thoughts on different aspects of communications technologies, welcoming
the chances for encounter they offer but warning of the pitfalls. Pope Francis of late has warned repeatedly about the risk of young people being so attached to their cell phones that they stop face-to-face friendships. The new document highlights the divisions that can be sown on social media, and the risk of users remaining in their “silos” of like-minded thinkers and rejecting those who hold
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as
different opinions. Such tendencies can result in exchanges that “can cause misunderstanding, exacerbate division, incite conflict, and deepen prejudices,” the document said.
It warned that such problematic exchanges are particularly worrisome “when it comes from church leadership: bishops, pastors, and prominent lay leaders. These not only cause division in the community but also give permission and legitimacy for others likewise to promote similar type of communication,” the message said.
The message could be directed at the English-speaking
“But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal, to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Catholic Twittersphere, where some prominent Catholic figures, including bishops, frequently engage in heated debates or polemical arguments that criticize Francis and his teachings.
The prefect of the communications office, Paolo Ruffini, said it wasn't for him to rein in divisive bishops and it was up to their own discernment. But he said the general message is one of not feeding the trolls or taking on “behaviour that divides rather than unites.”
Hundreds of people flocked to a small town in Missouri this week and last to see a nun whose body has barely decomposed since 2019. Some say it's a sign of holiness in Catholicism, while others say the lack of decomposition may not be as rare as people think.
Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster was exhumed in April, according to a statement from the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, in Gower, Missouri.
The nuns had been preparing for the addition of a St Joseph shrine, and that involved “the reinterment of the remains of our beloved foundress, Sister Wilhelmina,” the statement said.
When they exhumed Lancaster, they were told to expect only bones, since she had been buried in a simple wooden coffin without any embalming four years ago.
Instead, they discovered an intact body and “a perfectly preserved religious habit,” the statement said. The nuns hadn't meant to publicize the discovery, but someone posted a private email publicly and “the news began to spread like wildfire.”
Volunteers and local law enforcement have helped to manage the crowds in the town of roughly 1,800 people, as people have visited from all over the country to see and touch Lancaster's body.
“It was pretty amazing,” said Samuel Dawson, who is Catholic and visited from Kansas City with his son last week. “It was very peaceful. Just very reverent.”
Dawson said there were a few hundred people when he visited and that he saw many out-ofstate cars.
Visitors were allowed to touch her, Dawson said, adding that the nuns “wanted to make her accessible to the public ... because in real life, she was always accessible to people.”
The monastery said in a statement that Lancaster's body will be placed in a glass shrine in their church on Monday. Visitors will still be able to see her body and take dirt from her grave, but they won't be able to touch her.
The Diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph also released a statement.
“The condition of the remains of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster has understandably generated widespread interest and raised
important questions,” the diocese said. “At the same time, it is important to protect the integrity of the mortal remains of Sister Wilhelmina to allow for a thorough investigation.”
“Incorruptibility has been verified in the past, but it is very rare. There is a well-established process to pursue the cause for sainthood, but that has not been initiated in this case yet,” the diocese added.
The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, also said
that Lancaster has not yet reached the required minimum of five years since death for the sainthood process to begin.
Rebecca George, an anthropology instructor at Western Carolina University in North Carolina, said the body's lack of decomposition might not be as rare as people are expecting.
George said the “mummification” of un-embalmed bodies is common at the university's facility and the bodies could stay preserved for many years, if allowed to.
Coffins and clothing also help to preserve bodies, she said.
“Typically, when we bury people, we don’t exhume them. We don’t get to look at them a couple years out,” George said. “With 100 years, there might be nothing left. But when you’ve got just a few years out, this is not unexpected.”
