TWO SENIOR PASTORS PARTNER WITH TEEN CHALLENGE DIRECTOR TO HOST SEMINAR AND RELEASE NEW BOOK TO BATTLE CRIME AND VIOLENCE
By ALESHA CADET Tribune News Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net
With the goal of offering an answer to the call for action in the fight against crime and violence, three Bahamian men have partnered to inform and educate citizens, parents, professionals, church leaders, social workers and community leaders on various strategic measures that can be taken to access, engage and mentor troubled youth and gang members.
With a collective 80 plus years of experience, Dr Dave Burrows, Dr Carlos Reid and Dr Eric Fox have pooled their resources to pen a book and training manual titled “Reaching the Streets.”
The authors said the book serves as a major resource for a two-day training event being held this under the auspices of the Prime Minister Philip Davis and the Minister of National Security Wayne R Munroe at the Bahamas Faith Ministries Diplomat Centre on Carmichael Road. The second night of the training event takes place Friday, June 9, at 7pm.
Dr Dave Burrows, who is also the senior pastor at Bahamas Faith Ministries, said the book and manual is a compilation of effective strategies that have been put together by the authors in reaching, mentoring, and guiding young people away from crime and gangs, and into productive lives.
“The motivation for creating the book stemmed from three years ago when there was a major incident where six young men got killed in the Jerome
Avenue area. After that we had a meeting, the three of us, and decided that we would use our experiences and the lessons that we have learned over the years to try to make a difference in the lives of our young people. We realised that a lot of our people are dying and we felt that it would be important to not only talk about it, but document it and take action,” said Dr Burrows.
At the event this week, the men are presenting practical and strategic measures which they have used themselves to help thousands of young men and women from troubled backgrounds to change their lives and become productive lawabiding citizens.
They believe among those who have benefitted from these strategic outreaches and
interventions are former gang members who are now business and community leaders, and even pastors and family men and women.
“All of us grew up in our formative years on the streets. And we realised that there are many left behind, beginning with our friends and extending to young people today. So someone needs to reach them, and that is how we came up with the name. When we talk about personal experiences, all of the authors, each of us in different ways were involved in what they call ‘the game’,” said Dr Burrows.
“The ‘game’…is basically life on the streets and the rules that go along with it: the drama, the police looking over your shoulders, and all of the incidents
that go along with it. When I returned home from college, my life had been changed. I saw what was happening in the Bahamas and decided to personally reach out to my friends, young persons in the schools and the communities. It was a result of that outreach that I saw thousands of young persons change their lives and become a changed agent like I became.” He said when it comes to the message of the book, he wants readers to understand that while there is a lot of talk about crime and violence, there aren’t many answers or solutions to be found in the public forum.
“A lot of people want to help, but they don’t know what to do. So, in this book, we will show you how you can help. We will show you what worked, what didn’t work, and what can possibly work in the future that individuals from all walks of life can implement,” said Dr Burrows.
“We are talking about parents, business people and social workers, as there is some critical information that we share that the average person wouldn’t be aware of. In the book there is something about how to access, because you can’t really reach someone if you don’t have the access; how to engage, and understanding how to communicate and relate. And even understanding the individual. We think these persons are one thing and they are actually someone different. At the seminar, we explain the difference.”
One of the unique strategies addressed in the book, Dr Burrows said, was about criminals and their parents.
“Very often we see a young man who is a criminal gang member and he may do something terrible, and they interview his mother who says, ‘My son was a good boy.’ People say this woman must be crazy because the (son) was a terrorist. But the truth of the matter is, you are dealing with two people; she knows one person, we know another. For example, if his nickname is Scarface on the streets, at home is name is John Brown, whom the mother knows. So you have to understand how to approach them the right way to make a difference,” he said.
He believes initiatives like this help the community and show people a better way of life.
Dr Burrows said he knows men who started out as gang members, but have since changed their lives for the better, becoming businessmen and family men.
“You would really be surprised at some of the names of these persons. Sometimes it’s people we see every day and on television. We see them in prominent positions and we never know they were among the young people who were saved because of these interventions,” he said.
Going forward, Dr Burrows said the team is working on strategic programmes and are in talks with the government and local businesses to launch initiatives they believe will have a tremendous impact on the Bahamas, and young people in particular.

Rastafari gain sacramental rights to marijuana in Antigua and Barbuda, celebrate freedom of worship
Associated Press
MEMBERS of the Rastafari religion and political movement have for decades been persecuted and imprisoned for their ritualistic use of marijuana. But the tiny islands of Antigua and Barbuda recently became one of the first Caribbean nations to grant Rastafari official sacramental authorisation to grow and smoke the herb that they deem sacred.
Antigua and Barbuda
Prime Minister Gaston Browne told The Associated Press in an interview
that his government took this step to try to end the persecution and bring respect to the Rastafari faith.
Rastafari elsewhere are pushing for similar religious protections. Experts and stakeholders think the Antigua and Barbuda law could give a boost to these efforts worldwide at a time when public opinion and policy are continuing to shift in favour of medical and recreational marijuana use.
Here is a quick look at the faith’s beliefs and history:
ORIGINS
The Rastafari faith is rooted in 1930s Jamaica, growing as a response by Black people to white colonial oppression. The beliefs are a melding of Old Testament teachings and a desire to return to Africa. Its message was spread across the world in the 1970s by Jamaican music icons Bob Marley and Peter Tosh — two of the faith’s most famous exponents.
A Rastafari’s personal relationship with “Jah,” or God, is considered central to the faith.
SACRAMENTAL MARIJUANA
Rastafari followers believe the use of marijuana is directed in biblical passages and that the “holy herb” induces a meditative state and brings them closer to the divine. The faithful smoke it as a sacrament in chalice pipes or cigarettes called “spliffs,” add it to plantbased organic stews and place it in fires as a burnt offering.
But adherents, many of them Black, have endured both racial and religious profiling due to their ritualistic use of cannabis.
GANJA
“Ganja,” as marijuana is known in the Caribbean, has a long history in Jamaica, and its arrival predates the Rastafari faith. Indentured servants from India brought the cannabis plant to the island in the 19th century, and it gained popularity as a medicinal herb.
HAILE SELASSIE
Most of its many sects worship the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. This is rooted in Jamaican Black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey’s 1920s prediction that a “Black
king shall be crowned” in Africa, ushering in a “day of deliverance.” When an Ethiopian prince named Ras Tafari, who took the name Haile Selassie I, became emperor in 1930, the descendants of slaves in Jamaica took it as proof that Garvey’s prophecy was being fulfilled. When Haile Selassie visited Jamaica in 1966, he was greeted by adoring crowds, and some Rastafari insisted miracles and other mystical occurrences took place during

Greek island temple complex reveals ‘countless’ offerings left by ancient worshippers
ATHENS, GREECE
Associated Press
ARCHAEOLOGISTS
excavating a hilltop sanctuary on the Aegean Sea island of Kythnos have discovered “countless” pottery offerings left by ancient worshippers over the centuries, Greece's Culture Ministry said Wednesday.
A ministry statement said the finds from work this year included more than 2,000 intact or almost complete clay figurines, mostly of women and
children but also some of male actors, as well as of tortoises, lions, pigs and birds.
Several ceremonial pottery vessels that were unearthed are linked with the worship of Demeter, the ancient Greek goddess of agriculture, and her daughter Persephone, to whom the excavated sanctuary complex was dedicated.
The seaside site of Vryokastro on Kythnos was the ancient capital of the island, inhabited without break between
the 12th century BC and the 7th AD, when it was abandoned for a stronger position during a period of pirate raids.
The artefacts came from the scant ruins of the two small temples, a long building close by that may have served as a temple storeroom and a nearby pit where older offerings were buried to make space for new ones. The sanctuary was in use for about a thousand years, starting from the 7th century BC.
The excavation by Greece's University of Thessaly and the Culture Ministry also found luxury pottery imported from other parts of Greece, ornate lamps and fragments of ritual vases used in the worship of Demeter and Persephone at Eleusis, an ancient Athens suburb.
It is unclear to what extent the site on Kythnos was associated with Eleusis — one of the most important religious centers in ancient Greece, where the goddesses were worshipped during secret rites that were only open to initiates forbidden to speak of what they saw. The sanctuary at Eleusis
is known to have owned land on the island.
Kythnos, in the Cyclades island group, was first inhabited about 10,000 years ago. Its copper deposits were mined from the 3rd millennium BC, and in Roman times it was a place of political exile. The excavations are set to continue through 2025.

Pope Francis has scar tissue removed, hernia repaired during three-hour abdominal surgery
By NICOLE WINFIELD, TRISHA THOMAS AND MARIA CHENG Associated Press
POPE Francis underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to remove intestinal scar tissue
and repair a hernia in his abdominal wall, the latest maladies to befall the 86-year-old pontiff who had part of his colon removed two years ago.
The Vatican said there were no complications during the three-hour
surgery, which required Francis to be under general anesthesia. The pontiff was expected to remain at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for several days, and all papal audiences were canceled through June 18.
Dr Sergio Alfieri, director of abdominal and endocrine sciences at Gemelli, who also performed Francis’ 2021 colon surgery, said the operation was successful. A short time later, the
pope was awake, alert and even joking.
“When will we do the third one?” he quoted Francis as saying.
During the operation, doctors removed adhesions, or internal scarring, on the intestine that had caused a partial blockage, as well as pain in recent months. Alfieri revealed that Francis had undergone previous undisclosed abdominal surgeries sometime before 2013 in Argentina, which had also caused scarring.
To repair the hernia that had formed over a previous scar, a prosthetic mesh was placed in the abdominal wall, Alfieri said. He added that the pope was suffering from no other pathologies, that the tissue removed was benign and that after he recovers, he should be fine.
A feared protrusion, or bulging of the intestine through the hernia tear, was apparently not found.
“It appears they operated on him in a timely fashion with no compromise to his intestine,” said Dr Walter Longo, chief of colon and rectal surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, who did not participate in the surgery and commented after consulting the Vatican statement on the procedure.
Hernia operations are rarely performed on an emergency basis, and Alfieri said the surgery had been planned. While unannounced publicly, it appeared timed so Francis would have ample time for recovery ahead of a busy travel schedule later this summer.
At three hours, the pope’s procedure was considerably longer than the standard 60 to 90 minutes doctors say a hernia operation usually takes, but Alfieri noted that the scar tissue from the previous
surgeries was completely removed.
Spending more time under anaesthesia, coupled with being on a ventilator for so long — in someone who has lost part of one lung as a young man — could put the pontiff at risk of breathing complications or a longerthan-expected recovery time, experts said.
Francis remained in charge of the Vatican and the 1.3-billion strong Catholic Church, even while unconscious and in the hospital, according to canon law.
In July 2021, Francis spent 10 days at Gemelli to remove 13 inches of his large intestine. In an interview with The Associated Press in January, Francis said the diverticulosis, or bulges in his intestinal wall, that prompted that surgery had returned.
After that surgery, Francis lamented that he hadn’t responded well to the general anesthetic. That reaction in part explained his refusal to have surgery to repair strained knee ligaments that have forced him to use a wheelchair and walker for over a year.
However, Alfieri said Francis had no adverse reactions to the anesthesia in 2021 or Wednesday.
“Clearly no one likes to be operated on and put to sleep because the moment we're put under, we lose consciousness,” he told an evening news conference at the hospital with the Vatican spokesman by his side. "But there was no physiological problem two years ago or today."
Dr Manish Chand, a professor of surgery at University College London who specialises in colorectal surgery, said the greatest issue afterwards would be pain management and making sure the wound heals properly.

Brothers of the Anglican Church Men urged to ‘rise up’ during 49th annual conference; Turks and Caicos government minister joins the ranks
DELEGATES attending the 49th annual Anglican Church Men’s conference in the Turks and Caicos Islands last week flew Bahamas Air, Inter Caribbean Air and British Airways to reach Providenciales.
At the airport, they were met by Conference Chair Shanty Richards and other conference committee members, including ACM President Preston Dickenson of the Church of St Monica's Branch and ACM Council Vice President of the Southern Region Brother Wayne Garland.
Held June 1-4, under the theme "No Branch Can Bear Fruit by Itself”, this was the first Diocese-wide, in-person conference since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The conference opened with a worship service of Solemn Evensong, an address and the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament conducted by the Father Lynden Douglas, rector of the Church of St Monica.
In his sermon, he charged the attendees to keep in mind this year’s theme, which was taken from Matthew 7 vs 20: "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
Also in attendance were Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands Charles Misick and Diocesan Council President of the Anglican Church Women Charlene Rodgers.
On Friday, June 2, morning devotions were conducted by the ACM Council chaplain, Dwight Gibson. Canon Stephen Davies led the meditation, while ACM Council President Gevon Moss called the AGM to order and invited delegates to pause and recognise those members who passed away during the past year with a moment of silence.
The guest speaker, developer and philanthropist Stan Hartling, was introduced by Preston Dickenson, ACM branch president at St Monica's Parish.
Mr Hartling challenged the delegates to continue
pressing on even in the midst of challenges and to take up the mantel when it comes to mentoring young men. The AGM then followed with presentations of reports by the various committee chairmen and regional vice presidents. Amendments to the constitution were also part of the discussions.
On Saturday, June 3, the day commenced with mass conducted by the rector of St Monica, Father Lynden Douglas. This was followed by a call to order by the Council President.
Roger Pinder, an ACM brother from St Gregory Parish in New Providence, then introduced the day’s guest speaker, Jamell Robinson, Minister for Infrastructure, Housing and Planning in the Turks and Caicos government.
Mr Robinson delivered a presentation encouraging the men to continue to grow the organisation through prayer, study and action.
The Council’s President presented his report, highlighting achievements which included: A tribute

The report was tabled for adoption and was then accepted.
Diocesan Bishop Laish Boyd was then invited to conduct the election of officers for the new term, 2023-25. He greeted attendees and commended the President and his executives, along with all branches for the work of the ACM throughout the diocese.
The newly elected officers were: Gevon Moss, president; Ken Major, vice president; Erald Thompson, treasurer; Darius Ferguson, assistant treasurer; Durante Charlow, secretary; Ethan Adderley, assistant Secretary,
and Brian Brown, chaplain. The Bishop and the delegates congratulated the newly elected officers.
On Sunday, June 4, the closing ceremony and church service of the 49th annual conference of the ACM began with a procession of witnesses from the parking lot of First Caribbean Bank to the Church of St Monica. Bishop Boyd was the celebrant and preacher, giving a charge to the all members, and particularly to the newly elected executive team during their commissioning.
Turks and Caicos Deputy Premier Erwin Jay Saunders and ACW Council President Charlene Rodgers were also in attendance. Bishop Boyd also jacketed the newest member of the branch at St Monica's Parish, Minister Jamell Robinson.
President Gevon Moss said: “Let us remember that we are all part of one body in Christ. We need each other to grow, to bear fruit, and to fulfil the purpose that God has for us. I want to conclude with a call to rise up. Let us rise up as men of God, committed to our faith and the work of the kingdom. Let us rise up to serve our communities, to be a light in the darkness, and to spread the good news of the gospel.”

Grand gospel concert to celebrate ‘Road to 50’
THE Men’s Ministry of the Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) East Street will be hosting a “joyous and inspiring celebration of the goodness of the Lord “through a special ‘Road To 50’ Grand Concert featuring performances by Pastor Simeon Outten, the Tabernacle Concert Choir and the world-renowned Bahamas Brass Band.
Under the theme “Building an Ark of Safety”, the concert will be held on Sunday, June 11, at 6pm at the COGOP East Street Tabernacle.
Audience members, the Men’s Ministry said, can expect to enjoy an array of talented Bahamian gospel artists, choirs and bands who will lead them on a powerful journey of praise and worship.
Among the groups expected to take the stage are P3 Mime, the Rahming Brothers, Shaback and others.
The concert is expected to also shine a spotlight on the pivotal role music, gospel artists and community bands have played in encouraging the citizens of this nation.
“The anointed worship songs and music have drawn many Bahamians closer to the Lord, even as the country has marched on to a destiny of independence and its people worked to build a developing and growing nation,” the Men’s Ministry said.
“As the Bahamas nears its 50th anniversary of independence, we want to join with our community to celebrate this historic, national milestone and to
give honour and glory to God for allowing us to see this moment,” said Philip Beneby, director of the Men’s Ministry.
“Our senior pastor, Bishop Hulan Hanna, charged the Men’s Ministry with spearheading and organising a national concert and we want to ensure that this is truly a
spectacular time of worship through song and that it is an event the entire family can enjoy.
“We invite everyone to join us in this grand celebration because we know the healing, deliverance, joy and salvation that worship music can bring.”
Explaining the importance and connection of
the evening’s theme, Mr Beneby said: “The mission of the Men’s Ministry is to establish a safe space, especially, for boys and young men in the community, in the same way that God provided the ark to save all living creature.
Those who heeded the call and entered the ark were saved, so it is our mission,
our desire, that this ‘Road to 50’ concert will also serve as a gateway to the ark of safety, allowing persons who are struggling, in need of a word, a touch from the Lord, to experience God’s love, his presence, his healing and salvation.”
This concert is free to attend.
