WHEN AND WHY TO CHANGE CHURCHES

Christians are always reminded about the importance of going to church on a regular, weekly basis.

But sometimes it can be difficult to find the motivation for weekly attendance, particularly if your place of worship is somewhere you don’t really feel comfortable.

However, admitting that you just “don’t like your church” can be hard. However, for some Tribune Religion readers who made the decision to switch churches, a change of

location also meant a change of perspective.

“I had been going to my church since I was 10 with my family, but now that I am an adult, I have to say that I find my pastor’s teaching to be a little harsh. I don’t agree with what he says. I just feel that he preaches a lot of hate, and after one sermon where he condoned marital rape and women being property, I just realised that I was not getting spiritually fed,” said Lynette.

“Instead, I was leaving church every week with an uncomfortable feeling. My church’s pastor tried to make me feel like I was just opposed to the truth, but I just felt like he was a stumbling block to

my faith. I started attending another church down the road and this pastor challenges me, he presents scripture and Christianity in a way that makes me think and want to do better; it really made me grow as a Christian.”

Phylicia said she left her church after her children got to school age.

“The church I used to go to is very ‘old-school’; they want you to dress a certain way, they expected your children to sit like statues for three hours, and every Sunday my kids would complain how they didn’t want to church,” she said.

One thing Phylicia didn’t want was for her children

to grow up hating attending church.

“I took a friend’s advice and started going to a church that is very youth-centered. They have a strong programme for kids of all ages, Sunday school and a youth group. It makes church fun for them. Now, on Sundays my kids are up and ready to go before me,” she said.

A scandal prompted Ellie to change churches.

“God forgive me, but some of the people in my old church was just wicked. Let’s just say there were some rumours about what pastor was up to behind closed doors that I didn’t think were decent and no one in authority seemed

to say anything, so I left,” she said.

Meanwhile, Melanie said she got tired of her pastor’s “grandstanding”.

“It was getting worse every week. I felt my former pastor enjoyed performing and being the centre of attention for hours each Sunday more than he enjoyed actually ministering to the congregation and spreading the Christian message. I think he would’ve been better off becoming a performer than a minister. At my new church, our pastor creates a more spiritual and contemplative atmosphere, and I greatly prefer that over and entertainment show,” she said.

Southern Baptists refuse to take back megachurch because it has women pastors

The Associated Press

THE Southern Baptist Convention has refused to welcome Saddleback Church back into its fold, rejecting an appeal by the California megachurch over its February ouster for having women pastors.

Southern Baptist church representatives at their annual meeting here also rejected a similar appeal by a smaller church, Fern Creek Baptist of Louisville, Kentucky, which is led by a woman pastor.

The results of the Tuesday votes were announced Wednesday morning on the concluding day of the the two-day annual meeting here of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, whose statement of faith asserts that only qualified men can serve as pastors.

The convention hall packed with about 12,000 Southern Baptists was quiet after the announcement, appearing to have listened to the earlier urging by SBC President Bart Barber for them to show restraint.

“I know sometimes there are churches where people wind up in biblical divorce,” he said. “But we don’t throw divorce parties at church. And whatever these results are, I’m asking you, behave like Christians.”

Saddleback had been the denomination’s second-largest congregation and until recently was widely touted as a success story amid larger Southern Baptist membership declines.

With the 9,437-1,212 votes, delegates rejected an appeal by Rick Warren, the retired founding pastor of Saddleback and author of the bestselling phenomenon, “The Purpose Driven Life.” Warren had urged Baptists to agree to disagree “in order to share a common mission.”

“Messengers voted for conformity and uniformity rather than unity. The only way you will have unity is to love diversity. We made this effort knowing we were not going to win," Warren said at a news conference after the results were announced.

Church representatives also voted 9,700-806 to deny an appeal by a smaller congregation, Fern Creek Baptist Church of Louisville, Kentucky, which has had a woman pastor for three decades but came under heightened scrutiny this year.

Warren and the Rev. Linda Barnes Popham, pastor of Fern Creek, made their final appeals to Southern Baptists here on Tuesday during the denomination's annual meeting.

Warren has been a lifelong Southern Baptist, and the church he founded being removed from the denomination was something he might have never expected even though he has pushed the boundaries for several years now, said Scott Thumma, a sociology of religion professor and director of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research.

“It’s pretty clear (from his speech Tuesday) that Warren did not think the

SBC was going to reinstate Saddleback,” he said. “But he’s had a platform to say what being Baptist means, what the Scripture says about women in ministry, that Southern Baptists are under a big tent and what is means to exclude any congregation. This is all probably more symbolic.”

Following the vote results, Warren issued a critique of the direction of the SBC that contributed to Saddleback's ejection.

“There are people who want to take the SBC back to the 1950s when white men ruled supreme and when the woman’s place was in the home. There are others who want to take it back 500 years to the time of the Reformation," he said. "I say we need to take the church back to the first century. The church at its birth was the church at its best.”

In February, the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee voted to oust the two congregations, along with three others that chose not to appeal, for having women pastors.

All Baptist churches are independent, so the convention can’t tell them what to do, but it can decide which churches are “not in friendly cooperation,” the official verbiage for an expulsion. The SBC’s official statement of faith says the office of pastor is reserved for qualified men, but this is believed to be the first time the convention has expelled any churches over it.

HOW PAT ROBERTSON CHANGED CHRISTIAN MEDIA AND MADE IT POLITICALLY INFLUENTIAL

For Americans growing up between the 1950s and the 1980s, religion was a predictable presence on television: There were weekly Sunday morning shows and religious programming that issued end-time warnings, sought monetary contributions or staged faith healings. But none of those covered news.

Pat Robertson, who died on June 8, 2023, changed this. Today, there are entire networks devoted to religious broadcasting, which include Christian television that reaches millions of Americans, often with a conservative perspective on current events.

As a scholar of religion and politics in America, I believe it is important to understand the impact of the medium, and how it came to have such influence.

The growth of Christian media

American Christians have historically used new media to spread the gospel. In the 19th century, evangelicals used pamphlets and advertising techniques. The early 20th century produced a religious radio subculture that is still thriving in programs like the ones offered by Focus on the Family or Moody Radio.

By the early 1950s, preachers like Robert Schuller and Billy Graham had energetically taken to television. Such programming thrived during the Cold War, and in 1966,

Robertson’s “The 700 Club” debuted.

“The 700 Club” was distinct from other programmes in its willingness to blend theological themes with political commentary and explicit engagement with news. In the 1970s, this approach became more widespread because of two related political trends.

First, Protestant organisations, mostly fundamentalist ones like the Moral Majority, took to popularising Christian conservatism. These organisations rallied national support to influence politicians to oppose abortion rights and the Equal Rights Amendment, among other causes.

Second, around the same time, beginning with Ronald Reagan’s presidency, conservative politicians started to harness evangelicals as a voting bloc. As a result, many of these politicians began paying closer attention to Robertson for indications of this bloc’s concerns.

The televangelists

These political changes were reflected in the rapid growth of Christian shows on cable television.

In addition to Robertson’s long-standing talk show, the end-times prophecy show “Jack Van Impe Presents” and others began to normalise the idea of addressing what was happening in the news from a Biblical perspective. Such shows claimed they were providing viewers with “real” explanations that media and liberal politicians covered up. These shows also presented conservative talking points as facts.

During this period, American “televangelists” experienced several withering scandals. Evangelist

Jimmy Swaggart, for example, was discovered with a prostitute, and televangelist Jim Bakker was convicted of fraud.

In the long term, however, these scandals did little to diminish the influence of such preachers. Robertson’s story demonstrates this.

To the surprise of many, Robertson entered the Republican presidential primary in 1988. Though he dropped out of the race somewhat early, his candidacy might have helped prove that far-right evangelicalism was now anything but marginal. Following this, Robertson co-founded, along with Ralph Reed, the Christian Coalition, which worked to advance politically many of the key issues circulated in Christian media, such as concerns about abortion, anxiety around religious pluralism, and contesting the secularisation of public institutions.

Influence of Christian media

Religious broadcasting grew hugely in the 1990s and 2000s. Christian media increasingly commented on current events. And, critically, it began to have an influence on the wider culture.

For example, from the mid-1990s, popular films

example, on election night in 2016, Robertson floated the idea that Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger conspired with Martin Luther King Jr, to orchestrate “Black genocide.”

This way of viewing the world moved closer to the center of conservative politics since the 1980s, a period of time when the Christian right acquired more influence in American politics.

news regularly featured stories about Christians persecuted globally, such as in Turkey.

and novels like “Left Behind” suggested that viewers with the “wrong” religious or political beliefs would suffer damnation. Such films and literature attracted tens of millions of viewers and readers.

Furthermore, the kinds of issues and arguments long advanced in Christian media – such as concerns about the content of popular entertainment, or resistance to changing family dynamics – regularly exploded into widespread public concern, and conservative critics began to influence political policy.

“The 700 Club” and the Christian Broadcasting Network regularly devoted airtime to critiques of educational policy, which in time gained ground in the Republican Party. Robertson was also instrumental in popularizing Christian schools, like his Regent University, rooted in the idea that public institutions were not trustworthy.

Why this matters

The power of these programmes is more than simply the stories covered or guests interviewed – it is their social impact on religious beliefs.

At times, Christian news can present ideas that are often highly emotional and conspiratorial as facts. For

The themes central to Christian television were more consistently those of the Republican Party. Consider how in some corners of the media in the 1980s, Reagan began to be depicted as though he was God’s agent on Earth. In the 1990s, the growth of multinational corporations and trade deals was decried as part of a demonic “new world order.” And today, when Islamophobia is on the rise, some Christian television channels often depict and celebrate former President Donald Trump as a “fighter in chief” who defends Christians despite his personal faults.

These attitudes were reflected in many of the contemporary news programmes themselves.

For example, Robert Jeffress of Dallas’ First Baptist Church called Islam a “false religion” that is “inspired by Satan himself.” Such claims have been widespread since September 11, 2001, alongside assertions - made by Robertson and Jerry Falwell two days after that event – that the attacks had occurred because America expanded gay rights, legalized abortion and removed prayer from schools.

Such comments reached millions of people without facts ever being addressed.

Further, Christian Broadcasting Network

While such persecution clearly does occur in places across the world, CBN and other outlets often framed these stories alongside claims that American Christians were censored or otherwise embattled by liberalism or secularism. These latter claims helped produce an overall sense that Christians were beleaguered in America.

Amplifying one view?

The growing regularity of such examples has significant implications for American politics.

First, assertions that religious liberty is being violated around the world are put out endlessly in what I call “the resonance chamber of American public life,” in which repetition, aided by social media, helps claims to achieve legitimacy. Second, stories on the Christian news channels are constantly tailored to the idea that viewers are being persecuted.

By presenting itself as authoritative, trustworthy journalism, Christian news reassures viewers that they do not need to consult mainstream media in order to be informed. More dangerously, I argue, it authorises a particular, often conspiratorial way of viewing the world. It denounces neutrality or accountability to multiple constituencies as burdensome or even hostile to Christian faith.

‘Honour thy father and thy mother’

Father’s Day will be celebrated across the Bahamas this Sunday, so it is perfect time to touch upon a scripture that is not only a verse but also serves as the Fifth Commandment of the Christian Bible: “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12)

The Bible makes it very clear how we as human beings should treat the people who brought us into this world, our parents.

Giving his view on the subject, Tribune Religion reader Matthew Knowles said: “I may sometimes disagree with my parents on some matters, but I can never approach them in a disrespectful way. They deserve my respect. It can sometimes be a hard commandment because people let their pride get in the way, or some folks may have troubling relationships with their parents, but the commandment makes it clear that honouring it provides a blessing, which is long life.”

Judy Clarke said she believes utmost respect for your parents may also have cultural roots.

“I don’t know if it’s a race thing either, because us Black folk, most of us won’t be found ever disrespecting our parents. And if you are Caribbean, it’s worse. I don’t believe in putting fear in your kids, but it’s just a thing. We don’t back talk not matter how old we get,” she said.

“I’m in my 30s, so over the course of my life I have had friends who have troubled relationships with their parents. And when it is like this, honouring them becomes hard. You have persons who were really hurt by their parents. I am thankful I am not in a position to speak on this because I can only imagine the feeling. But if I had to offer any kind of advice I

would say love them still, but from a distance.”

American actress Drew Barrymore was in the headlines recently, speaking about her complicated relationship with her mom.

In an interview with Vulture, the former child star said she will "never not care" about her mother even though they have had a tumultuous relationship over the years.

After the Steven Spielberg movie “E.T the Extra-Terrestrial” made her a star at age 7, she developed an alcohol problem at age 11; by age 12 she was a drug addict, and at 13 she cut her wrists and was hospitalised.

Her father, John Drew Barrymore, was a violent alcoholic, and her mother and manager, Jaid Barrymore, was "a wild child" herself.

After her parents' divorce, Jaid would take her then 9-year-old daughter with her to New York City's famed Studio 54, where she was introduced to drugs and partied with young men.

At age 14, Drew was legally emancipated from her parents.

“All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not,” Barrymore told the outlet, in reference to her neighbours in New York City.

“And I’m like, Well, I don’t have that luxury. But I cannot wait. I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow."

Despite her upbringing, Drew said she still cares for her mother.

“I do care. I’ll never not care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully

guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up,” she said.

“I can’t turn my back on the person who gave me my life. I can’t do it. It would hurt me so much. I would find it so cruel. But there are times where I've realised that our chemistry and behaviour will drum up a feeling in me where I have to say, OK, I need a break again.”

According to the website Christianity.com, the Commandments were never meant to be legalistic, but to draw people closer to God. To honour your father and mother, specifically, means to “prize highly, care for, show respect for, and obey" authority in our lives.

“When we are young, we rely on our parents for food, care, and comfort. As we grow, the natural rebellion in us pushes against their authority. But still, we often learn to listen as they keep us safe from dangerous situations (crossing the street and touching the stove) and provide basic needs (food, clothing, shelter) for us. God put the Ten Commandments in place as guardrails for our hearts. It’s for our own benefit to follow and obey them to the best of our abilities. We honor our parents by obeying God’s command through the power of the Holy Spirit in us. It’s a choice we make, not to earn our faith, but as an outward sign of it. James wrote that faith without works is dead. We are saved by grace, but our lives illustrate our trust in God,” the website states.

CAN A CHATBOT PREACH A GOOD SERMON? HUNDREDS ATTEND

CHURCH SERVICE GENERATED BY CHATGPT TO FIND OUT

THE artificial intelligence chatbot asked the believers in the fully packed St. Paul's church in the Bavarian town of Fuerth to rise from the pews and praise the Lord.

The ChatGPT chatbot, personified by an avatar of a bearded Black man on a huge screen above the altar, then began preaching to the more than 300 people who had shown up on Friday morning for an experimental Lutheran church service almost entirely generated by AI.

“Dear friends, it is an honour for me to stand here and preach to you as the first artificial intelligence at this year's convention of Protestants in Germany," the avatar said with an expressionless face and monotonous voice.

The 40-minute service — including the sermon, prayers and music — was created by ChatGPT and Jonas Simmerlein, a theologian and philosopher from the University of Vienna.

“I conceived this service — but actually I rather accompanied it, because I would say about 98 percent comes from the machine,” the 29-year-old scholar told The Associated Press.

The AI church service was one of hundreds of events at the convention of Protestants in the Bavarian towns of Nuremberg and the neighbouring Fuerth, and it drew such immense interest that people formed a long queue outside the 19th-century, neo-Gothic building an hour before it began.

The convention itself — Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag in German — takes place every two

years in the summer at a different place in Germany and draws tens of thousands of believers to pray, sing and discuss their faith. They also talk about current world affairs and look for solutions to key issues, which this year included global warming, the war in Ukraine — and artificial intelligence.

This year's gathering is taking place from Wednesday to Sunday under the motto “Now is the time.”

That slogan was one of the sentences Simmerlein fed ChatGPT when he asked the chatbot to develop the sermon.

“I told the artificial intelligence ‘We are at the church congress, you are a preacher … what would a church service look like?’”

Simmerlein said. He also asked for psalms to be included, as well as prayers and a blessing at the end.

“You end up with a pretty solid church service,” Simmerlein said, sounding almost surprised

by the success of his experiment.

Indeed, the believers in the church listened attentively as the artificial intelligence preached about leaving the past behind, focusing on the challenges of the present, overcoming fear of death, and never losing trust in Jesus Christ.

The entire service was “led” by four different avatars on the screen, two young women, and two young men.

At times, the AI-generated avatar inadvertently drew laughter as when it used platitudes and told the churchgoers with a deadpan expression that in order “to keep our faith, we must pray and go to church regularly.”

Some people enthusiastically videotaped the event with their cell phones, while others looked on more critically and refused to speak along loudly during The Lord's Prayer.

Heiderose Schmidt, a 54-year-old who works in IT, said she was excited and curious when the service started but found it increasingly off-putting as it went along.

“There was no heart and no soul,” she said. “The avatars showed no emotions at all, had no body language and were talking so fast and monotonously that it was very hard for me to concentrate on what they said.”

“But maybe it is different for the younger generation who grew up with all of this,” Schmidt added.

Marc Jansen, a 31-yearold Lutheran pastor from Troisdorf near the western German city of Cologne, brought a group of teenagers from his congregation to St Paul. He was more impressed by the experiment.

“I had actually imagined it to be worse. But I was positively surprised how well it worked. Also the language of the AI worked

opinion, and that’s what AI has to represent as well,” she said. "We have to be careful that it's not misused for such purposes as to spread only one opinion.”

Simmerlein said it is not his intention to replace religious leaders with artificial intelligence. Rather, he sees the use of AI as a way to help them with their everyday work in their congregations.

well, even though it was still a bit bumpy at times," Jansen said.

What the young pastor missed, however, was any kind of emotion or spirituality, which he says is essential when he writes his own sermons.

Anna Puzio, 28, a researcher on the ethics of technology from the University of Twente in The Netherlands, also attended the service. She said she sees a lot of opportunities in the use of AI in religion — such as making religious services more easily available and inclusive for believers who for various reasons may not be able experience their faith in person with others in houses of worship.

However, she noted there are also dangers when it comes to the use of AI in religion.

“The challenge that I see is that AI is very humanlike and that it's easy to be deceived by it," she said.

“Also, we don’t have only one Christian

Some pastors seek inspiration in literature, he says, so why not also ask AI for ideas regarding an upcoming sermon. Others would like to have more time for individual spiritual guidance of their parishioners, so why not speed up the process of writing the sermon with the help of a chatbot to make time for other important duties.

“Artificial intelligence will increasingly take over our lives, in all its facets,” Simmerlein said. “And that’s why it’s useful to learn to deal with it.”

However, the experimental church service also showed the limits to implementing artificial AI in church, or in religion. There was no real interaction between the believers and the chatbot, which wasn't able to respond to the laughter or any other reactions by the churchgoers as a human pastor would have been able to do.

“The pastor is in the congregation, she lives with them, she buries the people, she knows them from the beginning," Simmerlein said. “Artificial intelligence cannot do that. It does not know the congregation.”

Evangelistic Temple brings Grammynominated gospel singer to the Bahamas for worship conference

GRAMMY-nominated and four-time Stellar Gospel winner Pastor William McDowell will be the featured guest at a worship conference here in Nassau this weekend.

The One Sound Conference, hosted by Evangelistic Temple, promises to be an immersive experience for all those who want to travel higher in their Christian worship.

The two-part event will feature a worship experience at 7.30pm on Friday. Then, on Saturday, attendees will get a chance to get up close and personal with Pastor McDowell and his team during the Worship Workshop, starting at 9.30am.

The workshop is designed to help singers, musicians, choirs and anyone who ministers through music to take their worship to higher heights.

Dexter Kerkulah, the new minister of music at Evangelistic Temple, said he wanted to introduce an experience that could help fine-tune the talent of worship singers and leaders.

"The vision for the worship conference came to me, right in my office, several days after being appointed as the new minister of music in a full-time capacity at Evangelistic Temple in December of 2021,” he told Tribune Religion.

Mr Kerkulah said bringing Pastor McDowell here to the Bahamas gives congregants of Evangelistic Temple a measure international exposure without the usual high price tag.

“I am a firm believer of balancing both local exposure and international exposure of a variety of ministry gifts that we have here locally in the Bahamas and across the world. It is very costly to send an entire music department to an international worship conference for training

and exposure. The vision came to me, instead of sending the entire music department to an international worship conference, which will cost thousands of dollars, why not bring the international exposure conference home,” he said.

"Music and fine arts departments can come together in unity at Evangelistic Temple to experience something of an international conference here at home; not having to spend lots of money."

Mr Kerkulah said he chose to approach Pastor William McDowell for the worship conference because the American gospel artist’s music “has been consistent for the last 10 pluse years.”

“His sound has not changed. Pastor McDowell's music is pure and authentic,” he said.

Pastor McDowell, who was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1976, began his music career in 2009 with the release of his album “As We Worship” by Entertainment One Music.

The album charted on three Billboard charts, including Gospel Albums, Independent Albums and Heatseekers Albums. His second album, “Arise”, was released in 2011. This sophomore project also placed on three Billboard charts, this time the Billboard 200 Gospel Albums and Independent Albums.

His third album, “Withholding Nothing”, was released in 2013 and climbed the Billboard

200 Gospel Albums and Independent Albums charts. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album for his third album.

For this weekend’s conference, Pastor McDowell will bring along his entourage of musicians and singers.

"Attendees get the opportunity on Friday night to receive the ministry gift of Pastor William McDowell for the entire night. On Saturday, Pastor

McDowell will be doing a Worship Workshop that will be geared more to music and fine arts departments, however, all are still welcome to attend,” said Mr Kerkulah

He said Friday night's event is geared towards both the churched and un-churched.

“We are calling everyone together for this one night of worship with Pastor William McDowell,” he said.

"Persons attending this worship conference will be in for a treat. This will be a life-transforming Worship Conference."

Mr Kerkulah said he hopes the event will be an impactful one.

"We want to bring churches together, worshipping in unity to encounter God as we worship and fellowship together; for fine arts and music departments to be strengthened in their area of gifting,” he said.

The church is also looking ahead to the One Sound Conference 2024.
