'Sing to the Lord'

• Concert to celebrate Bahamas’ independence and church hymns

BISHOP Trent Davis and the Bishop’s Chorale will host their “Sing to the Lord” concert in celebration of the Bahamas’ 50th anniversary of Independence at the Golden Gates World Outreach Ministries, Carmichael Road, this Sunday.

There will be a number of performances, including both solo and duet acts, and a special honoree will be highlighted.

“As we commemorate 50 years of Independence

as a nation, this night of music will lend itself to celebrate the historical back bone of our nation’s affluence as a Christian nation. If you love choir music, this night is for you,” said Pastor Davis.

“We will honour our foundation, cherish what we have built, and celebrate as we continue to increase the impact of gospel music on our nation. What better way to celebrate 50 years of Independence?”

The Bishop’s Chorale is comprised of singers from all denominations. Their performance will include hymns, Negro spirituals,

anthems and more gospel music.

Pastor Davis said it is going to be a full evening of sacred music.

"I've been away from the grand piano for five years, since before the COVID-19 pandemic, so this is our debut concert and we are featuring songs from the church hymn book that has blessed us over these last 50 years as a country," he said.

While he agrees that it is important to celebrate Junkanoo and gospel music, he believes the great hymns of the Church, which have helped to bolster the faith

of the Bahamian people, should also be highlighted.

Participating musicians include the Alumni Symphonic Band of the Golden Gates Church, Romel Shearer, a wellknown artist, and others.

"There will be opportunities for people in the congregation to interact with us as we sing together, the great hymns of the Church; hymns like ‘Praise to the Lord’, ‘Total Praise’, ‘Jesus is the

Sweetest Name I Know’, and the Negro spiritual ‘I Can Tell the World’ with a jazzy feel, and more,” said Pastor Davis.

“It will really bring the people to their feet in praise and adoration to God. It is a little something on the plate for everyone that loves church music in an exquisite way.”

In this jubilee year, Pastor Davis said the

church often takes its themes from the Bible.

"This is the year of blessings, restoration and expansion. We are doing that musically in our church and in our faith in God, believing that our best days are yet ahead. Fifty years is a milestone in our country and it should be celebrated in every corner and on every street… what God has been able to do, with this, the smallest yet greatest country in the world.”

Praying for the Bahamas • What is your prayer?

As the Bahamas trek towards its 50th anniversary as an independent nation, some Bahamians will meet this major milestone in the country’s life in a celebratory and reflective way. They will join to honour the past accomplishments of nation-builders while looking ahead to an even better future.

Some Christians believe that while this golden jubilee does warrant great celebration, it should be approached in a prayerful way. They shared with Tribune Religion their prayers for the Bahamas as it marks this momentous occasion.

Prayers for leaders

It is Agnes Johnson’s prayer that the Bahamas be blessed with leaders who will make the best

decisions for the greater good of the country and its people.

“The Bible tells us we are to always prayer for our leaders. We don’t only need leaders who can talk a good talk; we need leaders who have real plans to clean up this country. I can only pray that we get some leaders who have some kind of back bone to stand up for what is right. Some of our leaders are only concerned about appearing right, but we need them to stand up and fight for the people,” she said.

Prayers for the economy

It is Jan Munroe’s constant prayer that Bahamas’ economy regains its strength and makes a comeback.

“God knows our country has taken some blows, big blows over the years,” she said.

Jan said when the economy took a blow during the COVID-19 pandemic, so did her personal finances.

“I work in the tourism sector so I was one of those persons out of work. From that time, my prayer was for our economy and

that God will breathe new life into it. My prayer is that God give His people witty inventions and creative ideas so that they can make a good life for themselves and their families. I pray that our economy becomes diversified and that it rebounds and stays strong,” she said.

Prayers for peace

“We need preace in our communities,” said Demetrius Forbes.

“Things have deteriorated greatly in our people to the point where we argue and carry on

with one another for the simplest things. Take for example if you are on the traffic light too long, or you don’t go immediately when the light turns green; people are ready to argue with you,” he said.

“I can’t even begin to talk about the strife that exists in our families. Mothers are at odds with their children, sisters and brothers are not speaking to each other over problems that can be easily solved. And I can’t even begin to touch on all the killings that been happening,” he said.

St George's ‘Thrill of the Grill’ returns

THE countdown is on and preparations are in full swing for this year’s “Thrill of the Grill & Parish Fair” set for Saturday, July 15.

Hosted by St George’s Anglican Church it is one of the most anticipated community events in the area known as “The Valley” in New Providence.

“We have been anxious to return to the full fair,” said Sandra Knowles, chair of the organising committee. “The height of

the COVID-19 pandemic (prevented) the fair in its usual form, but thank God we are able to return to the fun and fellowship that the fair and always engendered.”

This year’s stalls will be providing steak and chicken dinners from “On The Grill”; homemade ice cream from “Home Cookery”, conch fritters from “Under the Dilly Tree’, ‘chicken in da bag’, curry dishes, hotdogs and hamburgers, roasted corn, seafood snacks, snow

cones, cakes and other desserts, homemade lemonade, sodas and water.

There will also be a plant stall, bingo, kids’ games, bouncing castles, kid and adult hoopla, White Elephant gift items, and “Thrill of the Grill” raffle, which has more than 20 prizes.

“Of course, we will end the day with a performance of the worldfamous Valley Boys,” said Ms Knowles, “so we encourage everyone to come out and join us.”

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a priceless link to the Bible’s past

Family Chair in Jewish Studies, Penn State

(THE CONVERSATION)

The Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC, in 2018 removed five Dead Sea Scrolls from exhibits after tests confirmed these fragments were not from ancient biblical scrolls but forgeries.

Over the last decade, the Green family, owners of the craft-supply chain Hobby Lobby, has paid millions of dollars for fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls to be the crown jewels in the museum’s exhibition showcasing the history and heritage of the Bible.

Why would the Green family spend so much on small scraps of parchment?

Dead Sea Scrolls’ discovery

From the first accidental discovery, the story of the Dead Sea Scrolls is a dramatic one.

In 1947, Bedouin men herding goats in the hills to the west of the Dead Sea entered a cave near Wadi Qumran in the West Bank and stumbled on clay jars filled with leather scrolls. Ten more caves were discovered over the next decade that contained tens of thousands of fragments belonging to over 900 scrolls. Most of the finds were made by the Bedouin.

Some of these scrolls were later acquired by the Jordanian Department of Antiquities through complicated transactions and a few by the state of Israel. The bulk of the scrolls came under the control of the Israel Antiquities Authority in 1967.

Included among the scrolls are the oldest copies of books in the Hebrew Bible and many other ancient Jewish writings: prayers, commentaries, religious laws, magical and mystical texts. They have shed much new light on the origins of the Bible, Judaism and even Christianity.

The Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls

Before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest known manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible dated to the 10th century AD. The Dead Sea Scrolls include over 225 copies of biblical books that date up to 1,200 years earlier.

These range from small fragments to a complete scroll of the prophet Isaiah, and every book of the Hebrew Bible except Esther and Nehemiah. They show that the books of the Jewish Bible were known and treated as sacred writings before the time of Jesus, with essentially the same content.

On the other hand, there was no “Bible” as such but a loose assortment of writings sacred to various Jews including numerous books not in the modern Jewish Bible.

Moreover, the Dead Sea Scrolls show that in the first century BC there were different

versions of books that became part of the Hebrew canon, especially Exodus, Samuel, Jeremiah, Psalms and Daniel.

This evidence has helped scholars understand how the Bible came to be, but it neither proves nor disproves its religious message.

Judaism and Christianity

The Dead Sea Scrolls are unique in representing a sort of library of a particular Jewish group that lived at Qumran in the first century BC to about 68 AD. They probably belonged to the Essenes, a strict Jewish movement described by several writers from the first century AD.

The scrolls provide a rich trove of Jewish religious texts previously unknown. Some of these were written by Essenes and give insights into their views, as well as their conflict with other Jews including the Pharisees.

The Dead Sea Scrolls contain nothing about Jesus or the early Christians, but indirectly they help to understand the Jewish world in which Jesus lived and why his message drew followers and opponents. Both the Essenes and the early Christians believed they were living at the time foretold by prophets when God would establish a kingdom of peace and that their teacher revealed the true meaning of Scripture.

Fame and forgeries

The fame of the Dead Sea Scrolls is what has encouraged both forgeries and the shadow market in antiquities. They are often called the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century because of their importance to understanding the Bible and the Jewish world at the time of Jesus.

Religious artifacts especially attract forgeries, because people want a physical connection to

their faith. The so-called James Ossuary, a limestone box, that was claimed to be the burial box of the brother of Jesus, attracted much attention in 2002. A few years later, it was found that it was indeed an authentic burial box for a person named James from the first century AD, but by adding “brother of Jesus” the forger made it seem priceless. Scholars eager to publish and discuss new texts are partly responsible for this shady market.

The confirmation of forged scrolls at the Museum of Bible only confirmed that artifacts should be viewed with highest suspicion unless the source is fully known.

BLACK NUN WHO FOUNDED FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN RELIGIOUS CONGREGATION ADVANCES CLOSER TO SAINTHOOD

MOTHER Mary Elizabeth Lange –a Black Catholic nun who founded the United States’ first African American religious congregation in Baltimore in 1829 – has advanced another step toward sainthood.

Under a decree signed by Pope Francis on Thursday, Lange was recognised for her heroic virtue, and advanced in the cause of her beatification from being considered a servant of God to a “venerable servant.” The Catholic Church must now approve a miracle that is attributed to her, so she can be beatified.

Lange grew up in a wealthy family of African origin, but she left Cuba in the early 1800s for the US due to racial discrimination, according to the Vatican’s saint-making office. After encountering more discrimination in the southern US, she moved with her family to Baltimore.

Recognising a need to provide education for Black children in the city, she started a school in 1828, decades before the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.

In 1829, she founded the Oblate Sisters of Providence – the country’s first African American religious congregation. They were trailblazers for generations of Black Catholic nuns who persevered despite being overlooked or suppressed by those who resented or disrespected them.

The Oblate Sisters continue to operate Baltimore's Saint Frances Academy, which Lange founded. The coed school is the country’s oldest continually operating Black Catholic educational facility, with a mission prioritizing help for “the poor and the neglected.”

“She lived her virtuous existence in a hostile social and ecclesial context, in which the preeminent opinion was in favour of slavery, personally suffering the situation of marginalisation and poverty in which the African American population found itself,” the Vatican’s saint-making office wrote.

Lange is among three Black nuns from the US designated by Catholic officials as worthy of consideration for sainthood. The others include Henriette Delille, who founded the New Orleansbased Sisters of the Holy Family in 1842 because white sisterhoods in Louisiana refused to accept African Americans, and Sister Thea Bowman, a beloved educator, evangelist and singer active

for many decades before her death in 1990.

Pope Francis’s advancement of Lange's sainthood cause "is a monumental step forward in the long fight for Black Catholic saints in the United States and for recognition for the nation’s long embattled African American Catholic community, especially nuns," said Shannen Dee Williams, a history professor at the University of Dayton and author of “ Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle.”

Currently there are no recognised African American saints. Williams said Lange joins three other African American sainthood candidates who have been declared "venerable — Delille, Father Augustus Tolton and Pierre Toussaint.

Williams said only one Black woman has been declared a saint in the modern era — St Josephine Bakhita, a formerly enslaved Sudanese nun who made “the extraordinary journey from slavery under Islamic auspices to freedom in an Italian Catholic convent in the late 19th century."

“This is why Lange’s cause is so important and revolutionary,” Williams said via email. “There is absolutely no way to tell Lange’s story or the story of her order accurately or honestly without confronting the Catholic Church’s mostly unreconciled histories of colonialism, slavery, and segregation.”

Williams said that unlike most of their counterparts in religious life, Lange and the Oblate Sisters of Providence were not segregationists, and never barred anyone from their ranks or institutions based on color or race. Instead, Williams said, Lange’s multiethnic and multilingual order preserved the vocations of hundreds of Black Catholic women and girls denied admission into white congregations in the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

"Lange and her Oblate Sisters of Providence’s very existence embody the fundamental truth that Black history always has been Catholic history in the land area that became the United States." Williams said,

Their story “upends the enduring myth that slaveholding and segregationist Catholic priests and nuns were simply people ‘of their times.’" Williams said. "Mother Lange and the Oblate Sisters of Providence were also people of those times."

MUSLIMS AT HAJJ PILGRIMAGE BRAVE INTENSE HEAT TO CAST STONES AT PILLARS REPRESENTING THE DEVIL

The Associated Press

MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims on Wednesday braved intense heat to perform the symbolic stoning of the devil during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

With morning temperatures rising past 107 degrees Fahrenheit, huge crowds of pilgrims walked or took buses to the vast Jamarat complex just outside the holy city of Mecca, where large pedestrian bridges lead past three wide pillars representing the devil.

Using pebbles collected the night before at a campsite known as Muzdalifa, the pilgrims stone the pillars. It's a reenactment of the story of the Prophet Ibrahim — known as Abraham in Christian and Jewish traditions — who is said to have hurled stones at Satan to resist temptation.

The ceremony was marred by tragedy on a number of occasions in the 1990s and 2000s, when hundreds died in stampedes during the stoning ritual. Saudi authorities have since built an expanded network of massive pedestrian bridges and redesigned the site to make it safer for pilgrims.

This year, the biggest danger might be the heat.

Temperatures soared past 113 F on Tuesday, as Muslims marked the spiritual high point of the pilgrimage by spending the day praying at Mount Arafat, where there was no breeze and almost no shade.

Pilgrims huddled under umbrellas, dousing themselves with bottled water. Cellphones were almost

too hot to hold and shut down after just a few minutes of use.

Saudi authorities have deployed tens of thousands of health workers for the pilgrimage and volunteers were handing out water. More than

6,700 pilgrims have been treated for heat exhaustion or heat stroke since the start of the pilgrimage, said Dr. Muhammad Al-Abdel Ali, a Health Ministry spokesman.

The annual Hajj pilgrimage is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all Muslims are required to undertake it at least once in their lives if they are physically and financially able. For the pilgrims it is an unrivalled religious experience that wipes away sins, bringing them closer to God and face-toface with fellow Muslims from all corners of the earth.

The last three days of the Hajj coincide with

Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of the Sacrifice, a joyful occasion in which Muslims around the world sacrifice sheep or cattle and distribute some of the meat to the poor. The holiday commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael on God's

command. In Christian and Jewish traditions, Abraham is willing to sacrifice his other son, Isaac. The holiday, which is held according to Islam's lunar calendar, depending on the sighting of the moon, began Wednesday in several Middle Eastern

countries and will begin Thursday in some Asian countries.

The Saudi royal family has invested billions of dollars in infrastructure to maintain Islam's holiest sites and to hold the annual pilgrimage, which is a major source of its

legitimacy. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto ruler, traveled to Mecca on Tuesday to oversee the pilgrimage, according to state-run media. This is the first Hajj to be held without COVID19 restrictions since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Authorities had expected some two million pilgrims, but official figures released late Tuesday showed that around 1.8 million were taking part in the pilgrimage. That's considerably fewer than the nearly 2.5 million who came in 2019. Worldwide economic woes may have been a factor.
