GOSPEL HONOURS ARE AN 'EPIC' SUCCESS

It was a true celebration of gospel music as Bahamians turned out by the hundreds for the 50th Anniversary Bahamian Gospel Honours.

Music enthusiasts, family and friends showed their support for gospel recording artists who convened at the Myles Munroe Diplomat Centre last Sunday for the highly anticipated event. And according to the organiser, gospel promoter Kevin “Minister K” Harris, “it was one of the greatest gospel music events in recent history”.

Mr Harris’ intention was to have the event coincide the country’s 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations.

“There was singing, dancing, clapping and shouting as many of the top groups and solo artists took centre stage for an event that some have simply described in one word: epic,” he said. Interest in the event, he said, was at an all-time

high, as crowds lined up 90 minutes before the awards ceremony was scheduled to begin.

The performances by the mix of legendary and contemporary gospel artists captivated the audience from start to finish.

Multiple award-winning ensemble Shaback kicked of the event with a highpowered performance of their hit single “Island Praise”, followed by a soulstirring performance by the Tabernacle Concert Choir (TCC) and a combination set featuring DJ Counsellor and gospel hip-hop recording artist E MAN.

“There were a number of memorable performances during the night, most

especially from some of the country’s legendary gospel groups, including the Sons and Daughters of Andros and its leader and founder, the Rev Harrington ‘Zippy’ Frazier, who at the age of 79 demonstrated that age is truly nothing but a number and that there was still fire in his soul as well as in his bones. Rev Frazier and his children had the crowd on its feet, swaying to the pulsating rhythm and refrain of their national classic ‘Sit Down Servant’, said Mr Harris. There were several unforgettable moments throughout the night, including the reunion performance by two of the country’s most

notable gospel groups, Sweet Revival and The Gospel Impressions.

Mr Harris said these two have not shared a stage in years. They were joined by gospel newcomer Davian Chase for an “electrifying” rendition of the classic ‘At the Meeting’, made famous by Sweet Revival some 30 plus years ago with the late Jerry Gould on lead.

“Another one of the evening’s most timeless performances was delivered by one of the country’s most beloved groups…the legendary Cooling Waters, featuring founding member Bishop Washington Williams. The group took the audience on a trip down memory lane with a medley of some of their greatest hits, including ‘The Lord Will Make a Way’, ‘God Can’ and ‘Waiting Down Here at the River’,” said Mr Harris. “Pastor Simeon Outten also electrified the atmosphere with a string of his hit singles and concert favourites including, ‘Higher Ground’ and ‘Give Me Some of That Holy Ghost’. The country’s latest reserve police officer, Bishop Lawrence Rolle, brought the house down with the evening’s closing performance of his hit single ‘It is Well’.”

One of the most dynamic “down home” performances came from Andros’ Pratt Brothers, who were accompanied by some of their grand-nephews and grand-nieces on the goat skin drums and the saw, delivering a sweet taste of indigenous Bahamian gospel music during the song “Swing Away”.

There were numerous performances that brought audience members to their feet, said Mr Harris, including Allison Rolle’s rendition of the national anthem, soloist Brendalee Petty’s performance of the hymn “Grace Grace”, and Jackie

Taylor Smith’s performance of “Uncloudy Day”, which also served as the song for the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the production, he said.

Another stand-out moment was when Cara T Newton performed the single “Old Time Religion” as a tribute to Life Time Achievement Award recipient Mother Racheal Mackey, who was moved to tears.

However, the most heartfelt moment of the awards ceremony, said Mr Harris, came with the performance of the song “Jesus, What a Wonder You Are”, which was dedicated to the late Vanessa Clarke, an awardwinning gospel recording artist and journalist who died following a long illness just a day before the event.

The night also featured performances by Orlando “Landlord” Miller, Kenyatta Taylor, Christopher Roberts, Puzzle and Oslien Jadorte.

Awards were distributed to 50 gospel recording artists to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. Several special awards were given out. including the Life Time Achievement Award, the Award of Distinction, the Award of Merit, the Emerging Artist Award and the Posthumous Award to the families of several gospel artists who have passed away.

The 50th Anniversary Bahamian Gospel Honours were produced by Mr Harris and his new public relations and promotions firm, Oracle Media Consultants. Committee members for the event included songwriter and producer Edison Sumner, Bahamas Gospel Music Awards (BGMA) President Travis Edgecombe, Pastor Clinton Minnis, Sharmie Farrington Austin and Heidi Stubbs, the executive assistant for the awards.

Grand Bahama prays for nation in Independence Ecumenical Service

PRAYERS were lifted up to God for the nation, Grand Bahama, the government and the nation’s youth on Sunday, July 16, 2023 during the Independence Ecumenical Service held at St John's Jubilee Cathedral in commemoration of The Bahamas’ 50th Independence festivities.

While bringing remarks, Minister for Grand Bahama Ginger Moxey told those in attendance that the historic occasion was one to recognise that the Bahamas stands on the threshold of an era, and to acknowledge the blessings God has bestowed upon the people.

“It is with great joy and reverence that we gather here today united in faith and spirit to commemorate the significant milestone in our beloved nation’s history, the 50th year of independence of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas,” she said.

“On this momentous occasion as we come together with an ecumenical service to express our gratitude, reflect on our journey and seek divine guidance for the path that lies ahead.”

Minister Moxey noted the steadfastness and faithfulness of God who has guided the people of Grand Bahama through the trials and triumphs of the past, like Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, Wilma, Floyd, Matthew and Dorian, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Today, we come together as one to acknowledge the divine providence that has shaped our destiny and embraced the responsibility entrusted to us to lead our island and our nation toward a brighter future,” she said.

Minister Moxey said it is on such an occasion that

CHURCH OF GOD OF PROPHECY’S CONFERENCE PROMOTES

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, SERVICE, AND RELIGIOUS TOURISM

Promoting a message of “Come Journey With Jesus” as well as religious tourism, the Bahamas is hosting this year’s Church of God of Prophecy’s Caribbean Leadership

Conference.

“The Bahamas is proud to be a part of this region, as well as the host for this year’s conference which happens biannually,” said conference committee member and Minister Samita Ferguson in a press conference this week.

“The Church of God of Prophecy Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean is about to embark on a leadership conference that promises to develop leaders, empower and foster growth among the kingdom of God, also one of spiritual enrichment and upliftment.”

The conference began yesterday, in Freeport at the Grand Lucayan Hotel, and concludes this Saturday.

“We, the Church of God of Prophesy, are encouraging religious tourism. There will be attendees coming in from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, the British Virgin Islands, just to name a few. The reason

for moving the conference from Nassau to Grand Bahama is to aid in the economic boost of the island,” said Ms Ferguson.

Bishop Dr Woodley Thompson, chairman of the Caribbean Leadership Conference, said the purpose of the conference is to fulfil two of the core values that the Church of God of Prophecy has adopted; one being leadership development, and the other, service.

“In terms of leadership development, the conference is to empower, develop existing leaders as well as to encourage the upand-coming leaders to get the tools and skill set they would need, as well as the inspiration to move forward in their personal ministry and in their collective ministry wherever they may be located,” said Bishop Thompson.

“It may also be a time of fellowship because we are

having our brethren from around the Caribbean join in this particular effort. As mentioned, we moved to Grand Bahama because we recognised the challenges that the island faces. So as a church body, we felt that we can play a small part by hosting there.”

Moreover, he said in terms of the second core value, which is that of service, the team is going to do their best to impact the community of Grand Bahama.

“There is a highlight during this conference where we are going to do a particular project where delegates are going to be invited to go to a senior

members’ home and do some renovations in terms of fixing up the outside, and just try to help this individual be encouraged in life and in their family. This would encompass two of the main core values of our church,” said Bishop Thompson.

Talking about additional highlights of the conference, committee member Minister Joel Dawkins said those in attendance will get to experience all the dynamic talent present.

“There is talent from all over from all over the Caribbean that will be featured during this conference. On Wednesday, we opened with a bang; one that left

persons changed, transformed and empowered. Also, as Bishop Woodley said, there is tons of leadership development. We do believe that the spirit of God is going to empower our speakers to empower us as leaders and upcoming leaders in the Church of God of Prophesy in the Caribbean,” said Minister Dawkins. She said there will be sessions that focus on discipleship and how to prepare the next generation of leaders; those that focus on the family, and sessions geared towards young adults and more.

“You know those young persons, when we get

together, the conversations are lit, so yes, there will be a segment specific just to us. Generally speaking, we can look forward to inspiration and a whole lot of integration,” said Minister Dawkins.

Church of God of Prophecy National Bishop Franklin Ferguson said the church currently has a presence in seven regions of the world, and in every one of those regions there has been an increase in crime, domestic violence, and demands for various issues over the last few years.

“The Church of God of Prophecy is endeavouring to respond to all of these in conferences such as these. These conferences started in the early ‘80s and they have expanded into a whole lot, covering a much wider area every year,” said Bishop Ferguson.

“So, I think those in attendance this week can expect to leave the conference more informed with better approaches that they can take back to their local churches. The church can only be effective when it is prepared to meet the changing environments of our local ministry, and with that in mind, we want to leave this conference far better prepared and effective.”

– Bahamas Christian Council President delivers message of hope

PRESIDENT of the Bahamas Christian Council Bishop Delton Fernander told the nation that the same faith and hope that “brought us from a fishing village” to now, and the same faith and hope that brought us to the 50th anniversary of Independence is needed to “move the people forward in love and service”.

He delivered this message during the recent 50th Golden Jubilee Ecumenical Service at Clifford Park. His message was a rallying call for Bahamians to strengthen their faith in order to take the country in the right direction for the next 50 years.

“Our nation, our legacy, our future – God has been good to us. Fifty years of independence is an incredible milestone for our country and our people,” Bishop Fernander told the thousands of Bahamians gathered to celebrate Independence Day.

“On this day, we remember those who ensured that our independence was realised, who sacrificed for the well-being of countrymen - even those they have never seen or yet unborn. They knew not what the future would hold in this small country on a journey to becoming a sovereign nation, but they sacrificed.”

Who we are as Bahamians today, he added, is a testament of the great faith and hope of our forefathers and mothers.

Bishop Fernander received thunderous applause as he rallied the crowd to understand just how blessed the Bahamas is: “By God, all things are possible - look at how far we have come by faith, counting and believing in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Blessed whose nation is God is the Lord - hope calls us higher while faith propels us forward over every obstacle and hazard... through many dangers,

toils and snares we have already come!

“Our collective hope and faith in God must be focused and aimed on a common loftier goal,” he continued.

“It is now our time to walk by faith and lift up our heads - take back our country and turn the tide! We have come this far by faith!”

Bishop Fernander warned that while the country has achieved much as a nation, that “we will lose sight” of our destiny and purpose if we do not forge ahead with a fervour for the things of God.

Hopelessness, he said, is like a plague over our nation. Violence, underachievers, social ills... all serve to hinder all of the achievements of the nation’s forefathers and mothers.

“I know that God is about to blow on this nation one more time,” he said.

“Through God’s help, we are going to make it! He will lift us up! This occasion of our Golden Jubilee is an opportune time for hope and faith to be restored in our country. We can’t keep changing plans every five years. There are more of us of a national perspective. I don’t care what church or political party you are a part of – let us lift up a spirit of oneness! This is our time! I challenge our leaders to make plain the plan, so we can go to what God is calling us to. We must speak to our land and say, ‘This land belongs to God’ and let us bring back our foundation. We need to have a national focus that goes beyond daily survival. We need to return to a place where we hold things in common in this Commonwealth. Our calling must be higher than politics. We are all a part of the common loftier goal. You are my brothers and sisters and we are all a part of the fabric that makes up the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.”

those gathered recognize and honour the visionaries and trailblazers who have paved the way for all of us: noting the architects of our independence, the pioneers of our diverse industries whose courage and determination have driven the country’s progress.

She called on Bahamians to remember their sacrifices and commitment toward a shared dream of a prosperous and harmonious Bahamas.

“As we embark on the next chapter of Grand Bahama and our nation’s story, let us reaffirm our commitment to our principles upon which our independence was built: freedom, equality and justice for all,” she said.

Grand Bahama Christian Council President Rev. Kenneth Lewis, in his soul-stirring address, said the occasion was one to celebrate that God was with us over the last 50 years; and commend those Bahamians who have gone before us,

who fought bravely to move the country forward.

He called on Bahamians not to forget God, to protect what God has given to them and not be a people of borrowers, but lenders; a people who own their own country; and a people, careful as to how they chart their course for the next 50 years.

Songs of praises were also lifted up to God by the Grand Bahama 50th Independence Children’s

Choir, the 100-Voice Independence Mass Choir, and the Sounds of Destiny. Members of the clergy, senators – James Turner and Kirkland Russell – Grand Bahama 50th Anniversary Celebrations Jubilee Committee Co-Chair Dr Cecil Thompson, senior government officials, heads of departments, administrators, youth councillors, Local Government councillors, president of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce James Carey, and senior officials of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force were also in attendance.
