Lessons to learn for our children

THE Proverbs 19:18 bible verse is more than just ancient wisdom; it’s a timeless call to parents to invest in their children’s lives with love and discipline.

“Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise, you will ruin their lives,” the verse reads.

In an interview with Tribune Religion, a number of persons agreed on the importance of being present and instilling values early on in their children.

“By teaching children lessons rooted in Proverbs, we can help shape them into responsible, compassionate, and wise adults,” said one local, Alicia Taylor.

This verse, she explains, is a guiding principle in her home, a reminder that the foundation for a child’s future is laid in their formative years.

As society faces a multitude of challenges when it comes to the youth, the role of proactive parenting is becoming ever more crucial.

This feature explores how embracing the wisdom of Proverbs 19:18 can make a profound difference in a child’s life, fostering hope and resilience that will carry them through adulthood.

“When you don’t fault your kids for the wrong they do while they are kids, you are setting them up for big trouble when they become adults. Enabling bad behaviour has a serious ripple effect. No one is saying beat the skin off of your kids when they do wrong but find healthy ways to discipline your children. Correct them while there is still hope because if you do not, you are helping them destroy themselves,” said Stephanie Brown, another parent.

For Denise Hunter, she believes there are perfect examples all around the world of what happens when parents don’t discipline their children.

“People now look at broken families as the norm and it is acceptable for some reason. You see a child acting out in school and you say oh maybe he or she is having trouble in the home,

and you leave it at that; just minding your business. This is a recipe for disaster. I feel like we all can do our part in raising the younger generation, as children can be molded into great people. They just need attention, time and discipline. We have to give them their props when they are right and let them know when they do wrong. Teach them respect, show them love and let God lead the way,” said Denise.

Melissa Cooper added that parents should also be careful to not let the world raise their children.

“Sometimes we get so busy in our careers and extracurricular activities, that we don’t spend the quality time needed with our children. From the iPads and cellular phones to the YouTube and Netflix shows, we offer them to our kids to keep

the occupied. But it takes more than putting a parental lock on your child’s tablet to monitor what they are doing. Because we all know children will find a way to do research and do what they want," said Melissa. She added: "You have to spend time with your children and teach them what you would like them to know in this life, because the minute they leave your home to go to school or wherever, the only thing they have to hold onto is the principle you have worked so hard to teach them. It takes so much more than money to be a parent; it takes time, we have to spend the time. Train up a child in the way he or she should go, for even when he is old, he will not depart from it - this Proverbs 22:6 verse is also an important one."

Coping with stress as a believer

EVERYONE experiences stress in their life that leaves them feeling overwhelmed and not knowing what to do.

Many Christians find themselves at this crossroads where they are stressed to the max and not only is it sucking the joy out of life but sapping their faith.

While stressful days are inevitable, some Christians say they have engaged several coping mechanisms that ensure they do not lose hope in the midst of overcoming challenging situations in their lives.

Pray

Shelia said the first thing she does when she experiences lots of pressure is turn to God in prayer.

“People may say well what in the world can pray doing when you are dealing with the tangible

tension of stress? Prayer does everything. When you seek God during stressful moments in prayer you allow him to search your spirit. Sometimes you may may not even realise what the root of you stress is and in turning it over to God he is able to show you exactly why you are stressed and show you what you can actually do about it. You get wisdom from seeking God in prayer to navigate life’s crazy moments."

Read Your Bible

Another coping mechanism for stressful times is reading the Word for Stanley. He said he has developed a habit of constantly

reading the word especially during challenging times.

“These are the times when you are tempted the most to lose faith and disconnect from God. You feel like there is so much going on in your world and the world is caving in on you. So sometimes you can’t even see beyond your own struggles. So to get out of my own head I read the Word," he said.

Stanley said he gains great encouragement from all of the biblical lessons and stories of people who have had to overcome very unique and difficult circumstances.

“Seeing how others have overcome through faith in God it really strengthens my faith and reminds me that God is greater than any challenge that I will ever face," he said.

Praise and worship

Diana said when she is feeling overwhelmed and stressed the best thing can do is start praising and worshiping God.

“I had a situation when I needed a financial breakthrough. I was waiting on money to come through that I needed so badly. I couldn’t borrow any money from anyone. No one could help me out if the dilemma I was in and I think I was the most stressed at that point. I couldn’t think about anything else, I couldn’t function at work because the pressure was just too much," she said.

She added: "Then I remember the scripture that says ‘In all things give God thanks. I cranked up some worship music and just started reflecting on who God is and how many times he has never let me down. I started worshipping him and praising him for who he is. Can I tell you that after shifting my focus I felt so much peace. I didn’t even care what happened concerning that matter. When I cast my care on him he fought my battle and brought me out

on the other side with sound mind."

Quiet Your Mind

Sometimes when she is stressed Jordan unplugs.

"I quiet my mind from all of the competing voices - TV, radio, social media. Everything just feels like a clutter," she said. And in quieting her mind Jordan said she is more able to hear the voice of God speak.

“A lot of us are stressed out because we do not know what to do. We are out of answers when it comes to the things life throws in our direction. But if we oddly just shut off the distractions, the competing voices we would be better able to hear the solution God us trying to give us for our problems. We cant hear him, if we aren’t paying attention. We have to cut out all the clutter and listen for his vice alone. The only way to do that is by giving God our undivided attention,” she said.
