Florida company roasts GBPA with 130 jobs lost as contract collapses By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net A FREEPORT concrete supplier’s battle with the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) yesterday escalated into an all-out war as the two sides traded accusations of “spite” and “harassment” over the former’s imminent closure - with up to 130 jobs threatened. Gold Rock Corporation and its owners, the Floridabased Del Zotto family, branded the GBPA as “the leaders of the most grossly underperforming island in The Bahamas” as they unveiled the shuttering of

not just their concrete-making business but also their Grand Bahama-based hardware store and furniture and home centre. The GBPA launched a counter-offensive branded comments as “false” and “salacious”, and accused the Del Zottos of “mud slinging” and failing to give “the real facts”. Gold Rock’s owners have already moved to make good on their threatened exit. FNM leader Michael Pintard said yesterday both the government and the FNM are “quite anxious” to resolve the dispute.
HAITIAN Chargé de Affairs Anthony Pierre Brutus says he believes the only way to discourage Haitians from travelling illegally to and from The Bahamas is to grant visas to the community. His comments came in the aftermath of the recent boating tragedy that left 17 Haitian migrants dead.
FAMILY’S QUESTIONS ON ANDROS DROWNING TWO families in Andros are grieving after tragedy struck their loved ones while out at sea in separate incidents last week. Police said the latest incident happened on Saturday in the Mangrove Cay area where a man apparently drowned. Police said reports indicate that two men dove into waters to retrieve two small fishing vessels that had become unattached from their parent vessel, a 42ft fishing boat. SEE PAGE FIVE

While expressing dismay over the incident, Mr Brutus said it was also an “opportunity” for both the Bahamian and Haitian governments to come together to see how they can prevent a similar event from occurring. “Seventeen people died on the sea,” he said during last week’s Office of the Prime Minister press briefing. The $200m port will be the largest cruise terminal built by Carnival. It would be able to accommodate two of Carnival’s largest ships simultaneously. The cruise line broke ground on over 300 acres of land at Sharp Rock on May 12. During the introductory session and project overview held in the hotel’s convention centre on Thursday evening residents were given an update on the
