IAAF approves the Bahamas World Relays in 2019 By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

I

t seems as if the International Amateur Athletic Federation will make the World Relays its home in the Bahamas for the next few years. The biannual event, which gave birth at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium in 2013 and continued in 2015, will return for the third edition next year and again in 2019 for the fourth time. Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations president Rosamunde Carey said after she and IAAF Councilwoman Pauline Davis, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson and Director of Sports Timothy

Munnings met with IAAF president Lord Sebastian Coe at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Bahamas was granted the rights to continue to host the relays. “The IAAF Council met in Rio and they approved the Relays to be hosted in the Bahamas for 2019,” Carey said. “In November they will make a decision for 2021 and 2023, but we believe that they will grant them to us too. “We are really excited about that because they had some other countries like Dubai, China and countries in the region. But the IAAF said they were quite pleased with our performance and they had great confidence in us putting on the world-class event.”

As was the case in the previous two relays, the 2017 relays will serve as the qualifier for the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, England and Carey said they are just waiting on the IAAF to confirm that the 2019 edition will serve as the qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. What that means is that the top eight teams in both the men and women 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 metre relays at the consecutive World Relays will automatically qualify for the World Championships and hopefully the Olympics. “We know that the United States will be coming ready to defend the Golden baton that they won last year,” Carey said. “They came here and they dominated the relays and they qualified their

teams for the World Championships. “With the World Relays back here and being a qualifier for the World Championships, we are going to ensure that we put the best teams possible so that we can qualify for the four relays and not have to wait until the last minute as was the case with the women’s 4 x 400m relay.” The Bahamas was only able to get the men’s 4 x400m team qualified for the Olympics at last year’s World Relays. The other three fell short. But the women’s 4 x 400m team took advantage of the last chance meet at the Blue Marlins to secure their spot, although they had to wait on a court ruling against Russia before they were finally in. In Rio, while the men’s 4 x 4

team held on for the bronze medal, the women’s 4 x 4 team set a national record while finishing with a world ranking of No. 11. Carey said she’s confident that the women can make the final at the World Relays and book their ticket to the World Championships. She said she’s also looking at the resurgence of both the men and women 4 x 100m relay teams and is just as confident in both of them making the final and also qualifying for London. “The World Relays are in our backyard and this is going to be an opportunity for us to qualify early, so we are going to make sure that we get our best teams assembled so that we can qualify early and not have to wait on the last minute.”

What happened to Olympic team celebrations? By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net WHAT happened to the team celebrations for the 2016 Olympic Games? Leevan ‘Superman’ Sands, the newly appointed athletes’ representative, said the entire team was shocked to hear that there was a celebration for Shaunae Miller for her gold medal performance in the women’s 400 metres in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the rest of Team Bahamas was not included. Sands, who competed in the preliminaries of the men’s triple jump in his comeback from an injury he sustained at the previous Olympics in London, England in 2012, said they were all looking to join in the celebrations, not just for Miller but for the men’s 4 x 400 metre relay team that won the bronze medal. “We felt a little slighted about it because she made history and that was our second gold medal after Tonique (Williams),” Sands said. “We were hoping that there would be a big celebration with the whole team. I had a conversation with Shaunae before she left and she even stated that she wanted the whole team to be there. “So when I heard about the celebrations this weekend, we felt bad because we were not even given a chance to state whether or not we could attend. We wanted to celebrate with her and the 4 x 4 boys like we have done in the past. “We normally get a

So when I heard about the celebrations, I was shocked.” There are some plans afoot to celebrate the achievement of the team in a few weeks. There’s even a celebration for Miller at St Augustine’s College, her alma mater, where there are two signs erected at the front and back entrance of

the school, acknowledging the Big Red Machine accomplishment. The sign congratulates Miller for her achievement as the Olympic champion. A full day of activities is being planned for Thursday, September 15 on SAC’s campus in Fox Hill for Miller, who still has to complete the Golden League series on September 9 in Brussels. Miller is currently sitting in second place and has a chance to duplicate the

feat that Williams achieved when she won the Olympic gold and shared the Golden League jackpot in 2004. Since the Olympics, both quarter-miler Steven Gardiner, who was also a part of the relay team, and high jumper Donald Thomas, who was sixth in the final, have continued on to compete in Europe. All of the other athletes have returned to their various destinations, including school in the United States,

or are here at home. “A lot of us want to come home and celebrate with Shaunae and the men’s 4 x 4 team,” Sands said. “We have been contacted by a private company and even the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture about a celebrations for the team. We are still working out the details. But it’s not going to be the same after they have already had a celebration for Shaunae.”

Whatever happens, Sands said they will be prepared to celebrate. It is hoped that the celebrations, according to Sands, will not just include the track team but also the swim team of Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, Joanna Evans and Dustin Tynes, as well as Emily Morley, who made history as the first rower to represent the Bahamas at the games. Sands said they are all waiting to see what will transpire.

‘TEDDY’ LONGS FOR DAY WHEN BAHAMAS CAN PLAY INTERNATIONAL BASEBALL AGAIN By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net BAHAMAS Baseball Federation president Theodore ‘Teddy’ Sweeting said he longs for the day when the Bahamas can regain its rightful place as a member of the international baseball fraternity. But while they work out the knits with the Bahamas Baseball Association that has prevented that process, Sweeting said he applauds the efforts of the professional players to keep the dream alive. For the second time, Antoan Richardson of theSouthern Maryland, Atlantic League and Albert Cartwright of the Ottawa, Can-Am League will be playing for Great Britain in the 2017 World Baseball Classic qualifier that will take place from September 22-25 at the MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York. And for the first time, they will be joined by Ali Knowles (Garden City,

Pescos League), Jasrado Chisholm (Arizona Diamondbacks, MLB), Kyle Simmons (Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB), Todd Isaacs (Cleveland Indians, MLB), Reshard Munroe (Cincinnati Reds, MLB), Byron Murray (San Francisco Giants, MLB) and Champ Stuart (New York Mets, MLB). Brazil, Great Britain, Israel and Pakistan will compete over the course of the four-day contest to decide the 16th and final entry in the 2017 WBC. After playing for the first time in 2013, Sweeting said Richardson began the process again in2015. “Antoan wants to see the Bahamas play in the qualifying rounds of the World Baseball Classic,” Sweeting said. “So this time around, he was the one who initially did the introductions with the Baseball Federation and the Great Britain Baseball Federation. “From that point, after the introduction, the two federations started collabo-

rating on the possibility of other qualified Bahamians participating on the team for Great Britain. I formulated a committee headed by Patrick Adderley out of Grand Bahama, who liaisoned back and forth with Liam Carroll, the manager of Great Britain team, who began the process of reviewing our professional ball players.” Once they identified the players they were interested in, Sweeting said Great Britain made contact with the relevant baseball teams to grant approval for the players to play, if they so consented. For those who were interested, their grand parents had to be born in the Bahamas before the Independence of the Bahamas in 1973. Additionally, Sweeting said Great Britain is also looking at the possibility of including Byron Ferguson Jr, Chad Burrows and Desmond Russell from Grand Bahama on their roster. As for why the Bahamas, with so many players availa-

THEODORE SWEETING ble to make up a team, is not playing as a country, Sweeting said they are working on developing a strong relationship with Major League Baseball with the view of granting the Bahamas the rights to be included in international play. “We have been in contact with them back and forth from the beginning of 2015, trying to see whether the Bahamas could have submitted a team in the prelim-

inary rounds, which would then afford you, if you win your pool, the opportunity to play in the actual World Baseball Classic,” Sweeting said. “We were advised that they will do some research and get back to us. When they came back, they advised us that the International Baseball Federation does the recommendation for all of the countries that are afforded the opportunity to play in the World Baseball Classic.” When they did, Sweeting said the federation was informed that the Bahamas would not be granted permission due to its inactivity in international baseball. “We had set out a plan, which was to begin in 2015 when we, in collaboration with us sending a youth team to compete, didn’t compete because we were not properly registered,” Sweeting said. “So we did not attend in 2015. “This is now 2016 and we are now in preparation to sending a under-16 youth

team to Mexico to compete in the Pan Am qualifier for 2017. That looks very promising so that we can actually start the process of qualifying for the World Baseball Classic to be considered for the preliminary rounds.” Despite the ongoing feud with the BBA, Sweeting said the BBF is forging ahead with the view of getting its national teams prepared for the road to the World Baseball Classic. “Our goal now is to get a team prepared to compete next month, then prepare for the under-23 AU next year in 2017 and then in 2018 prepare to send a team to represent the country at the Central American and Caribbean Games,” Sweeting said. “If we do well in that, which is a qualifier for the Pan American Games, the following year, that would move us into 2019 and hopefully 2020 at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan where baseball is added back.”

Lawsuit pending, Bouchard out at US Open - Serena, Venus win By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Eugenie Bouchard wrung her hands at her post-match news conference. She rubbed her lower lip. She squeezed her left arm. While her body language screamed discomfort yesterday, when the main topic of discussion was Bouchard’s ongoing lawsuit against the US Open rather than her first-round loss, her words were measured. The once rising star answered every question. A year ago at Flushing Meadows, Bouchard got a concussion from a fall at the facility and withdrew before playing in the fourth round, and then missed most of the rest of the season. She filed suit against the US Tennis Association in US District Court in Brooklyn in October, and that case is still pending, putting the 2014 Wimbledon runner-up in the odd position of competing this week at an event whose organisers she is suing. “If I sit down and think about it, yeah, it’s definitely a strange situation. But it’s something that’s so far in the back of my mind. I don’t think about it on a daily basis, at all. I have people, lawyers, working on that side of it,” Bouchard said. “So it’s really not something I think about much at all. Obviously, being here, it’s crossed my mind. But besides that, I mean, it has nothing to do with my dayto-day life.” Her 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 exit against 72nd-ranked Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, a player who only once has been as far as the third round at a major tournament, was filled with 46 unforced errors by Bouchard, who also was treated for blisters on her feet. It represented the latest early loss

(AP Photo/Darron Cummings) for a 22-year-old Canadian who reached three Grand Slam semi-finals two years ago — and none since. In other first-round action on Day 2 at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament, Serena Williams started her bid for a record-

breaking 23rd major title by showing zero signs of trouble from a right shoulder she’s said was sore, hitting 12 aces in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ekaterina Makarova. Earlier, Williams’ sister Venus got through a tougher-than-expected 6-2, 5-7,

6-4 win against Kateryna Kozlova. “It was great to be challenged and to be pushed,” said the 36-year-old Venus, a two-time US Open champion, “because I had to get in those situations that you know you’re going to face in

the tournament.” There were various upsets around the grounds during the afternoon, including 19-year-old American Jared Donaldson’s 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0 elimination of 12th-seeded David Goffin, and a loss by No. 29 Sam Querrey, who stunned Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. Three seeded women departed, including former No. 1 and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic. When she was at her peak, and a seeded player, an early major loss by Bouchard was rather newsworthy. Her up-and-down 2015 and 2016 have changed that, in part because she is ranked only 39th now, after a best of No. 5. She lost 14 of 17 matches leading into the 2015 US Open but, after working a bit with Jimmy Connors, appeared to be back on the upswing in New York by reaching the fourth round. Then came her slip-andtumble, and the concussion diagnosis, and she pulled out of what would have been a matchup against eventual runner-up Roberta Vinci. It took her until January to return to the tour fulltime. “I didn’t feel like, on the court, I was back to where I was,” Bouchard said Tuesday, meaning that her level

of play wasn’t at its peak at the start of 2016. “But physically, since the beginning of the year, I’ve been feeling good.” USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier said the organisation would not comment on the “substance” of litigation. “However, it is truly unfortunate that a year after her accident, Genie’s focus is on matters other than playing to her best ability,” Widmaier said, noting that Bouchard’s lawyers asked for an extension of the case. He said the USTA “has remained ready, willing and able to bring the litigation to a conclusion as expeditiously as is possible, whether through settlement discussions or a fully litigated process.” Widmaier added that the lawsuit “had no impact on how Genie was treated at the US Open in any manner.” Bouchard’s coach, Nick Saviano, was asked whether her ability to play tennis Tuesday had been affected at all by any possible distractions created by the lawsuit. “I can’t really speak to that,” Saviano said. “She was in a good frame of mind coming in. She went out, she was ready to play, and the other girl played well.”

FIFA BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP BAHAMAS 2017 MATCH SCHEDULE RELEASED

Taking the tribeing approach to life - winning the mind, body and soul By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net HE has been one of the country’s top bodybuilders for quite some time. But now Leonardo ‘Nardo’ Dean is trying to do all he can to encourage more persons to live a “healthier” lifestyle. Dean, who currently serves as the public relations officer for the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, has produced a book called “The Trilogy of Fitness.” In the book, Dean said he intends to emphasise the importance of persons taking the tri-being approach to life – winning their mind, body and soul. “This book will empower you to achieve balance and equilibrium in your tribeing, the body, soul and mind,” Dean said. “It will also help you to attain the total fitness level that you not only desire, but so rightfully deserve.” The book, according to Dean, was written on the request of persons who have heard him speak at various seminars and fitness sessions. “People have been asking me why I didn’t compile my thoughts in writing so I went ahead and started the book,” said Dean, who noted that one of the persons

who endorsed his effort was the late Dr Myles Munroe. “I just wanted to impart some of the knowledge that I gained from being around the sport to more people.” Although he no longer goes on the stage to compete, Dean continues to work out in the gym at Better Bodies where he also serves as a personal trainer. “The sport has helped me to live a more healthy life and so I want to encourage as many people as I can to remain healthy,” Dean said. “One of the ways that they can do it is by developing their mind, body and soul.” In the book, Dean said he’s encouraging persons to optimise their body potential, increase their spiritual awareness, maximise their mental ability and stamina and increase their equilibrium and enhance their tribeing. “I’m dealing with not just the physical, but in order to develop the whole man, I’m dealing with their mental state of mind and their spirituality as well,” said Dean. “I’m really excited about the book because it is something that is needed and I hope that it will be used as a means to help develop the whole man.” To order the book, Dean invites interested persons to email him at bodyonixbahamas@yahoo.com or call 455-7646.

WITH eight months until the kings of the sand are crowned at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017, the pathway to glory has now been drawn with the release of the tournament’s match schedule. The competition will descend on the capital city of Nassau April 27 to May 7 as 16 teams aim to walk away with the coveted trophy that Portugal picked up at home in 2015. “In 2017, it will be the first time that the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup settles on the sands of the Caribbean,” Jaime Yarza, head of FIFA Events, said. “The event will have a major impact on the region. It will also be the Bahamas’ inaugural appearance at a FIFA World Cup, making this the first time that three teams from CONCACAF will participate at the event.” The hosts can, of course, expect enthusiastic support from their own fans. And Jeffrey Beckles, FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017 LOC Chairman, has also promised the warmest of welcomes for teams and supporters arriving from across the world. “Locals are excited to support Team Bahamas in the country’s FIFA World Cup debut, and The Bahamas is ready to receive international fans with open arms,” he said. “We are looking forward to hosting a truly spectacular event.” With hosts Bahamas and 2015 finalists Tahiti already having their places secured, next up to book their tickets to the Caribbean will be Europe’s four competitors, whose berths are set to be decided in Jesolo, Italy, September 2-11. Once they arrive next year, they will showcase their talent to the world in a new-look stadium at Malcom Park. It all adds up to an eagerly anticipated tournament, one which Joan Cusco, FIFA Beach Soccer committee member, believes will be unforgettable for all involved. “Everybody is looking forward for this FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017,” he said. “Not only because of its unique venue, in one of the most iconic resorts in the Caribbean, but for the huge competition everyone can look forward to. The teams have been improving a lot over recent years, and fans will be treated with a tremendous beach soccer spectacle.”

Darvish, Beltran lead Rangers to win over Mariners By SCHUYLER DIXON AP Sports Writer ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yu Darvish did his part in the first of six straight games at home for the Texas Rangers against the two teams chasing them in the AL West. Now it’s Cole Hamels’ turn. Darvish struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings and Carlos Beltran homered among three hits, helping the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 on Monday night. The American League-leading Rangers dropped the Mariners into third place, a game behind Houston and 9 1/2 back of Texas. For the ninth straight time since the All-Star break, the lefty Hamels will follow Darvish in the rotation Tuesday night. The Rangers are 11-6 in those starts with five straight wins. “I think it’s huge to have your one and two going back-to-back,” manager Jeff Banister said. “Yu set the table tonight with what he

was capable of doing, really keeping their hitters off balance. It’s a big plus to have those two guys at the front of the rotation for us.” Darvish (5-3) easily outpitched fellow Japanese right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma for his third straight win, leaving to a standing ovation with a 6-1 lead in the seventh after throwing 110 pitches, the most since his return from Tommy John surgery. The Mariners tagged Darvish for two runs on Franklin Gutierrez’s double off reliever Jake Diekman before Keone Kela struck out Nelson Cruz as the potential tying run. Sam Dyson struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 30th save, giving Texas 13 strikeouts. Seattle has lost six of seven and been held to one or no runs by CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka of the Yankees and Carlos Rodon of the White Sox. The lone win in that stretch — a 3-1 victory — came despite 14 strikeouts from Chicago ace Chris Sale, and

thanks to Mariners ace Felix Hernandez. “It’s very good pitching. What are you going to say?” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “When you catch the guys how we’re catching the rotations right now, it’s just where we’re at. We’ve just got to continue to grind and hang in there.” Beltran had a solo homer in the first and a double that was one of three straight run-scoring extra-base hits in a four-run third against Iwakuma (14-10), who lost his third straight start while matching his shortest outing of the season at three innings. Iwakuma allowed a season-high five runs for the fourth time. Two days removed from ending a career-worst 0-for-32 skid, Beltran had at least three hits for the first time since getting four against Oakland on Aug. 16, the day before the slump started. It was the third time Darvish and Iwakuma have faced each other in the majors, and Darvish

has two wins. The Rangers have won his last five starts after losing the previous five straight. WHICH WAY’S UP? Adrian Beltre jokingly turned his helmet backward as he came to the plate to face ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte in the fifth, drawing a big grin from the Seattle reliever, who said Beltre did the same thing when they faced each other for the first time last year. It must work for Beltre. The 37-year-old doubled against Venditte, just as he did last year. “I think he’s just trying to get some laughs,” Venditte said. SHORT HOPS Seattle center fielder Leonys Martin, playing in his old home park, took a home run away from Ian Desmond with a leaping catch above the wall in right-center in the seventh. ... Carlos Gomez struck out three times and is 0 for 18 with 10 strikeouts since homer-

ing in his first at-bat for Texas. ... Mike Zunino had four strikeouts, three against Darvish. ... The Rangers released OF Drew Stubbs, who rejected an assignment to Triple-A Round Rock. TRAINERS ROOM Rangers: The scheduled rehab start for RHP Colby Lewis (right lat muscle strain) with Double-A Frisco at Midland was rained out. He is likely to start Tuesday night in Frisco. UP NEXT Mariners: LHP James Paxton (4-5, 3.63 ERA) makes his second start since returning from a left elbow injury after getting struck by a line drive. Rangers: LHP Hamels (14-4, 2.67) is tied with Tampa Bay’s Jake Odorizzi for the lowest ERA among AL starters since the AllStar break at 1.59.

Gray lifts Rockies to 8-1 win over Dodgers By PAT GRAHAM AP Sports Writer DENVER (AP) — Starter Jon Gray pretended he was closing out the first inning. Anything to avoid a pattern of early game hiccups. That particular approach served him well, too, with Gray pitching six scoreless innings to help the Colorado Rockies beat the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1 on a gusty Monday night. Gray (9-6) surrendered four hits and struck out

eight in a crisp performance for his first win since Aug. 2. “I feel like sometimes you can out-aggressive people. I like to do that,” Gray said. “Bring a little intensity and cruise from there.” Gray started strong, which hasn’t always been the case this season. Of the 72 runs he has allowed, 34 have been scored in the opening two innings. In this game, not even a third-inning downpour could interrupt his concentration. Gray ran into trouble in

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL STANDINGS

the fifth with two on and one out. Adrian Gonzalez sent a sinking liner to center that Charlie Blackmon hauled in as he slid on the slick grass. Gray pointed his glove toward the centerfielder in appreciation. “That was awesome,” Gray said. “That really helped me out a lot.” DJ LeMahieu had a tworun double in a five-run seventh that turned a pitching duel into a rout. Kenta Maeda (13-8) was electric once again at Coors Field — except for a hanging slider that Nick Hundley hit for a two-run homer in the fourth. The right-hander with the quirky delivery allowed four hits over five innings. Maeda has a 2.12 ERA in three starts at the hitter friendly park. “Overall, I thought I pitched pretty well,” Maeda said through a translator. “It was that one pitch which was a slider inside that was definitely a mistake pitch.” The Dodgers had a momentary scare when AllStar rookie shortstop Corey Seager was hit in the left hand by a pitch from Chris Rusin in the seventh. He appeared to be in quite a bit of pain as he made his way to first base, but remained in the game. Seager was hit earlier in the game. The team said X-rays were negative. Seager won’t play Tuesday, but that was already planned. “It always hurts when you get hit,” said Seager, whose team finished with five hits. “You’re glad it’s not broken and you move on.” TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (mild disk irritation) will face hitters in a simulated game on Tuesday in Los Angeles. A minorleague start may be the next step in his rehabilitation. “We have a couple different scenarios. So, depending on how he comes out of it, we’ll

COLORADO Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray delivers a pitch to Los Angeles Dodgers’ Adrian Gonzalez in the first inning of Monday night’s game in Denver. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) make a decision,” manager Dave Roberts explained. Rockies: INF Mark Reynolds (broken bone in left hand) could return before the end of the season. “There’s a lot still out in front of him that he has to be able to do before he gets into a game,” manager Walt Weiss said. FANTASY DRAFT Roberts has a new player on his team — Julio Jones, the game-changing receiver of the Atlanta Falcons. Jones may not help the Dodgers win the NL West, but could lift Roberts and his team to a fantasy football title. The Dodgers held their league draft in Denver on Sunday. Roberts is the si-

lent partner on a squad coowned by Justin Turner and Brandon McCarthy. They took Jones with the No. 2 overall pick. THIS & THAT Last week, Maeda was optioned to the Arizona League Dodgers to free up roster space. He was recalled Monday and the team optioned right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart to Double-A Tulsa. Weiss said there won’t be any conversations about a new contract until after the season. The fourth-year manager is in the final year of his deal. ... Pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson broke up the shutout in the ninth with an RBI groundout that brought in Andrew Toles, who tripled.

SOUVENIR The crowd gave Colorado pinch-hitter Stephen Cardullo a standing ovation after his first major league hit in the eighth. Cardullo, who turns 29 on Wednesday, was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque last week. He plans to give the ball to his dad. “Just a great feeling,” Cardullo said. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Rich Hill (10-3) makes his first start at Coors Field since April 23, 2008, while with the Chicago Cubs. Rockies: LHP Tyler Anderson (4-5) is 4-1 with a 3.45 ERA at Coors Field this season.

AS ANTHEM CONTROVERSY SIMMERS, KAEPERNICK PREPARES TO PLAY By JOSH DUBOW AP Sports Writer SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick will get one more chance to impress coach Chip Kelly before the San Francisco 49ers announce their starting quarterback even as the debate surrounding Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the national anthem remains heated. Kelly said Tuesday that Kaepernick will play in the team’s final exhibition game Thursday night in San Diego after missing the first two preseason games with a tired shoulder. This will be Kaepernick’s first game since he spoke publicly over his anthem protest, saying he won’t stand during the anthem because of what he described as oppression of minorities in the United States. The 49ers declined to comment on whether there will be increased security in place for the game in San Diego when Kaepernick has said he once again will sit during the national anthem.

Blaine Gabbert, who is also in the running for the starting job, won’t play because he has gotten 30 more plays in the preseason and Kelly does not need to evaluate him further. Kelly said he will pick a starter for the regular season opener against Los Angeles on Sept. 12 sometime after Thursday night’s game. He said Kaepernick remains one of his two best quarterbacks. Despite that, Kelly said general manager Trent Baalke will make the final call on whether Kaepernick remains on the team’s roster after the cut to 53 players on Saturday. “It’s not up to me,” Kelly said. “Any decisions on this team are made through everybody. I do not have control of the 53-man roster. I don’t sit there and say this is the 53 we’re picking. It’s a group effort.” Kelly said he wasn’t sure how many quarterbacks the team will keep for the regular season. Rookie Jeff Driskel and Christian Ponder are the other two quarterbacks on the roster. Kelly said the swirling

drama around Kaepernick’s protest hasn’t hindered the team as it prepares for the new season despite an increased media attention since Kaepernick’s stance became public on Saturday. “When you talk to our players, they’re focused on the 2016 season and how good a team the San Francisco 49ers can be,” Kelly said. “As we said all along, we recognize his right to

express his feelings, but that doesn’t affect what we do from when we get here at 8:15 in the morning and leave at 8 o’clock at night.” Perhaps the bigger issue when it comes to Kaepernick’s status on the team has been his declining play. After leading the team to the Super Bowl following the 2012 season and getting back to the NFC championship game the following year, Kaepernick’s play has

I pay my taxes, I want my equal rights but this is my country, and consequently I don’t want to open up for ISIS or anybody that will take away what we’ve already gained.” Hall of Fame basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, another activist from the 1960s, said it is more concerning that the country still faces many of the same issues that athletes like himself, Brown, boxer Muhammad Ali, and Olympic sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos protested nearly a halfcentury ago. “What should horrify Americans is not Kaepernick’s choice to remain seated during the national anthem, but that nearly 50 years after Ali was banned from boxing for his stance and Tommie Smith and John Carlos’s raised fists caused public ostracization and numerous death threats, we still need to call attention to the same racial inequities,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote in the Washington Post on Tuesday. “Failure to fix this problem is what’s really unAmerican here.”

SERGIO AGUERO CHARGED WITH VIOLENT CONDUCT BY ENGLISH FOOTBALL LONDON (AP) — Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could miss the derby match against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sept. 10 after being charged with violent conduct on Tuesday for elbowing an opponent during a game. The English Football Association said match officials did not see the incident, in which Aguero appeared to swing his left elbow toward the face of West Ham defender Winston Reid in the 76th minute of City’s 3-1 league win on Sunday. It was caught on video, however. If he is found guilty by a three-person panel of former officials, Aguero could receive a threematch ban. City’s next game is against United at Old Trafford, possibly the most eagerly anticipated match of the season. Both teams have won their opening three games of the campaign. Aguero has until Wednesday to respond to the charge. Each member of the panel will review the footage and determine if they consider it a sending-off offense. The decision of the panel must be unanimous for retrospective action to be taken. The Argentina striker is one of City’s most important players. He has scored six goals in five games this season.

regressed. He ended up losing his starting job to Gabbert midway through last season and then underwent three operations in the offseason on his non-throwing shoulder, right thumb and left knee. He couldn’t participate in the offseason program and lost weight during his rehabilitation. Kaepernick then missed nearly two weeks of training camp with a tired shoulder and was ineffective in his first appearance of the preseason last Friday night against Green Bay. Kaepernick’s protest has drawn reaction from around the world from athletes, politicians and others. Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown, a civil rights activist during his career, told NFL Network that Kaepernick makes “all the sense in the world” and that he stands behind him “100 percent.” But Brown also said he would not choose to protest in this manner. “Now if you ask me, ‘Would I do that?’ No I won’t, because I see it a little differently,” he said. “I’m an American citizen,

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal strengthened its squad by signing striker Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna and Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia on the nextto-last day of Europe’s transfer window on Tuesday. England goalkeeper Joe Hart’s departure from Manchester City looked to move closer after he appeared with a Torino shirt after visiting the Italian club. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been trying to buy a striker since the end of last season, only to see bids for Leicester’s Jamie Vardy and Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette get rejected. With time running out to add to his squad, Wenger settled on the 27-year-old Lucas — a scorer of 17 goals last season. “He’s not only a goal scorer, he’s a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs,” Wenger said. “He’s got a good eye for goal and had an outstanding season last year.” British media reported Lucas will cost Arsenal about 17 million pounds ($22.3 million). Within hours, Arsenal had also re-shuffled its defensive options by signing center half Mustafi for a reported fee of 35 million pounds ($45.7 million), and sending Calum Chambers on loan to promoted Premier League club Middlesbrough. The 24-year-old Mustafi, who will join up with fellow Germany international Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, came through the Everton

academy before going on to join Sampdoria and then spending the last two seasons at Valencia. Mustafi became Wenger’s third high-profile signing for the new season, having brought in Switzerland’s defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Moenchengladbach in May. Hart was on the verge of leaving Man City on loan, having landed in Italy to tie up a move to Torino for the remainder of the season. He has slipped to thirdchoice goalkeeper at City, behind new signing Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero. The 29-year-old was greeted by around 200 fans loudly chanting his name at Torino’s headquarters, and there were further cheers and applause when he appeared at the window brandishing a club jersey with his name on the back. Hart was given permission to leave the England camp to seal the move. Back in London, Chelsea loaned France striker Loic Remy to Crystal Palace for the rest of the season. Hull signed three players: England midfielder Ryan Mason from Tottenham for an undisclosed club-record fee, Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall from second-tier team Cardiff, and striker Will Keane from Manchester United. Sunderland sent Netherlands midfielder Jeremain Lens on loan to Turkish club Fenerbahce for the rest of the season, a year after signing him for 8 million pounds ($10.5 million) from Dynamo Kiev. West Bromwich Albion sold Costa Rica right back Cristian Gamboa to Celtic.

BARCA SIGNS STRIKER ALCACER AS SUAREZ BACKUP BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona strengthened its already top-class attack by signing Spain striker Paco Alcacer from rival Spanish club Valencia on Tuesday in a deal worth at least 30 million euros ($33.5 million). Alcacer, who turned 23 on Tuesday, joins a Barcelona lineup featuring Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. He will likely play a backup role to Suarez, filling the void created last year after the departure of Pedro Rodriguez to Chelsea. “Messi, Neymar and Suarez are the three best players in the world,” Alcacer said. “It will be a

privilege to play with them. I hope I can do my part to do great things at Barca.” Alcacer signed a five-year contract after passing a medical exam. Barcelona said it will pay 30 million euros ($33.5 million), plus a possible 2 million euros ($2.2 million) more in variables, to Valencia. The Liga champions also said they are loaning forward Munir El Haddadi to Valencia, which will have the option to buy his rights next summer for 12 million euros. Alcacer scored 43 goals in the

past three seasons at Valencia. For Spain, Alcacer has scored six goals in 13 matches. He was dropped by former Spain coach Vicente del Bosque for this summer’s European Championship, but new manager Julen Lopetegui has recalled Alcacer for this week’s international matches, including Spain’s first 2018 World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein. He is Barcelona’s sixth summer signing, along with fellow ex-Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes, Samuel Umtiti, Denis Suarez, Lucas Digne and goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

England’s cricketers smash records and Pakistan ENGLAND rattled up the highest ever one-day cricket international total as they beat Pakistan by 169 runs at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, yesterday to secure a series victory. Alex Hales struck a record 171 and Jos Buttler made England’s fastest ever 50 from 22 balls as England hit 444 for three in their 50 overs. This surpassed the 443 for nine posted by Sri Lanka against the Netherlands in 2006. Pakistan were forced to bat aggressively but their batsmen struggled to build partnerships as they were bowled out for 279. Opener Hales had made just seven and 14 in his previous oneday innings against Pakistan but he played positively after Eng-

LAKERS SIGN SUMMER LEAGUE STANDOUT AUGUSTE EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have signed forward Zach Auguste after his solid summer league performance. The Lakers announced the signing Monday. Auguste averaged 5.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in four games for the Lakers in Las Vegas summer league play. The 6-foot-10 Notre Dame product averaged 14.0 points and 10.7 rebounds for the Irish last season as a senior. Auguste is the 16th player signed by the Lakers heading into training camp. Los Angeles added Chinese veteran Yi Jianlian to their frontcourt and re-signed veteran forward Tarik Black earlier this month.

THUNDER ACQUIRE LAUVERGNE DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets traded forward Joffrey Lauvergne to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday for two second-round draft picks in 2017. Lauvergne, a native of France, appeared in 83 games for the Nuggets, including 16 starts, averaging 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds. He was the 55th pick in the 2013 NBA draft and made his debut for Denver late in the 2014-15 season. Denver will receive Oklahoma City’s 2017 secondround pick and Memphis’s 2017 second-round pick, which Oklahoma City acquired in a previous trade.

land won the toss and batted first on a good pitch, going on to surpass Robin Smith’s 167 against Australia in 1993, the previous highest score by an Englishman. Despite Jason Roy’s early dismissal to a short Hasan Ali delivery, Hales’ aggressive nature saw him register a 55-ball halfcentury, before earning a reprieve on 73 when he was caught off a no-ball. His fourth one-day century was brought up from 83 deliveries but still Hales accelerated as he launched Hasan over midwicket to break Smith’s 23year record. Hales targeted the on-side and left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz came in for particular punishment as the Nottinghamshire

man struck 44 runs from 26 deliveries. He was trapped lbw by the next ball but left the field having hit 22 boundaries and four sixes. Joe Root played a supporting role to Hales, making 85 from 86 deliveries, but England could have stumbled once he fell in the 37th over. However Buttler kept up the pressure on Pakistan with a succession of powerful shots all around the ground. He struck a towering six over long-on and scooped Hasan to fine leg as he registered his half-century. England captain Eoin Morgan added to the carnage by striking a Wahab delivery into the crowd for six as England passed their previous highest one-day total of

408. Buttler had a late reprieve as he was bowled off a Wahab no-ball, before Morgan made his 31st one-day half-century by clubbing another six into the stand. Buttler then struck the final ball of the innings over extra cover for four to finish on 90 not out and register a remarkable, unbeaten 161-run partnership with Morgan. Sharjeel made a quick halfcentury in response, flicking Chris Woakes off his hips for three consecutive boundaries before eventually being caught on the boundary. The innings petered out before Mohammad Amir’s entertaining cameo, as he made the first ever half-century

by a number 11 in ODIs. Amir made an attacking 58, thrashing Mark Wood for consecutive sixes before being caught and bowled by Woakes. Other statistics from the record breaking game were: Pakistan seamer Wahab Riaz’s figures of 0-110 are the second most expensive in ODI cricket. Joe Root is the sixth England player to make five consecutive half-centuries. England scored 321 for two in their last 30 overs, hitting a boundary every four deliveries. England’s 59 boundaries were the most conceded in a one-day international innings. England struck 16 sixes, their most in an ODI innings.

HOUSTON, OTHER NON-POWER 5 SCHOOLS SEEKING MAJOR BOWL BID By STEVE MEGARGEE AP Sports Writer

the nation’s most underrated players in Donnel Pumphrey, who rushed for a school-record 1,867 yards in 2014 and 1,653 yards last season. San Diego State was a unanimous pick to win the Mountain West’s Western Division in the league’s preseason poll. The Aztecs have the Mountain West’s preseason offensive player of the year (Pumphrey), defensive player of the year (cornerback Damontae Kazee) and special teams player of the year (kick returner Rashaad Penny). Kazee had eight interceptions last season. San Diego State ended the 2015 season on a 10game winning streak and finished 11-3 with a 42-7 Hawaii Bowl blowout of Cincinnati.

THE schools not from Power Five conferences are making the most of their inclusion in the New Year’s Six bowl lineup. Boise State of the Mountain West Conference earned the Group of Five’s invitation two years ago and beat Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl. Houston of the American Athletic Conference followed that up last year with a win over Florida State in the Peach Bowl. The Group of Five — conferences that aren’t part of the Power Five (the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conferences ) — includes the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference Mountain West Conference and Sun Belt. Schools from the Group of Five will try to win a New Year’s Six bowl for the third consecutive year. Here’s an alphabetical rundown of some teams that have shots at earning the Group of Five’s one guaranteed invite to a Year’s Six bowl, which includes the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose and Sugar. APPALACHIAN STATE: On the surface, this one’s a long shot. The odds of a school from the Sun Belt Conference getting in the New Year’s Six are pretty stiff. But Appalachian State does have a path to that invitation, narrow as it may be. The Mountaineers return the nucleus a team that went 11-2 and won the Camellia Bowl last season. Taylor Lamb threw 31 touchdown passes and only nine interceptions a year ago, while Marcus Cox rushed for 1,423 yards. Appalachian State visits Tennessee and hosts Miami in two of its first three games. If Appalachian State manages to split those two games and wins the rest to go 11-1 — and all the American and Mountain

(AP Photo/Eugene Tanner) West teams have at least two losses — that’s one way a Sun Belt team could end up in the New Year’s Six. BOISE STATE: The Broncos went 9-4 and failed to reach the Mountain West championship game last season, but their 55-7 blowout of Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl should allow them to head into this season with plenty of momentum. Quarterback Brett Rypien is back after throwing for 3,353 yards as a freshman. Thomas Sperbeck also returns after catching 88 passes for

1,412 yards last season. A manageable schedule gives Boise State a reasonable chance of winning all its games. Boise State’s nonconference games are home matchups with Washington State and BYU, plus trips to Louisiana-Lafayette and Oregon State. HOUSTON: The 15thranked Cougars are the clear favourites to get the New Year’s Six bid from the Group of Five. Tom Herman enters his second year at Houston as arguably the nation’s hottest coaching prospect after leading the Cougars to a 13-1 record

last season. Quarterback Greg Ward Jr. and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson were the only Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks last season to combine for over 1,000 yards rushing and 2,000 yards passing, and Houston’s only loss last season came to Connecticut in a game Ward didn’t start due to injury. Houston gets an early chance to make a statement Saturday when it faces No. 3 Oklahoma at NRG Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans. SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs have one of

SOUTH FLORIDA: This team could emerge as Houston’s biggest challenger in the American Athletic Conference. USF returns seven starters on offense and seven more on defense from a team that went 8-5 last season, a marked improvement from a 4-8 campaign in 2014. Quarterback Quinton Flowers threw 22 touchdown passes and rushed for 991 yards and 12 scores last season. Marlon Mack has led the American in rushing each of the last two seasons. He had a school-record 1,381 yards rushing last season and reached the 100-yard mark nine times. WESTERN MICHIGAN: The Broncos are the Mid-American Conference preseason favorites according to the league’s media after going 8-5 and winning the Bahamas Bowl last season. Western Michigan has a chance to make an early statement, as it visits Big Ten programs Northwestern and Illinois in two of its first three games. The Broncos have a dynamic passing combination in Zach Terrell and Corey Davis, whose 3,785 career yards receiving lead all active FBS players. Western Michigan also returns Jamauri Bogan, a 1,000-yard rusher as a red-

10 years after last pro match, Andre Agassi visits US Open By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer NEW YORK (AP) — For all of his victories during two decades on the tennis tour, including eight Grand Slam titles, Andre Agassi looks back most fondly these days on the aftermath of a loss. During an interview Tuesday in the city where he played his last professional match 10 years ago, Agassi called the way he walked away from the sport as good a moment as he had on court during his lengthy, successful always-in-thespotlight career On September 3, 2006, Agassi lost a third-round match at the U.S. Open against Benjamin Becker, then delivered an on-court speech in Arthur Ashe Stadium to an adoring crowd that gave him a lengthy standing ovation as he headed into retirement. “It really brought together what it’s all been about from the beginning, which is people and connection. And it put everything into

perspective: the ups, the downs, the successes, the failures, the triumphs, the comebacks. I not only grew up in New York, but New York helped me grow up,” the 46-year-old Agassi said. “So when all of a sudden it was over, and there was that raw emotion — both on my end and 20,000 other people who were in the stadium — it made me realize how connected we’ve all been over the years,” he continued, thinking back on that occasion. “And I’ve got to say, I look back on that moment as probably the best moment I’ve ever had on a tennis court.” He famously wrote in his book “Open” that he always hated tennis “with a dark and secret passion” because of his overbearing father, and so maybe it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Agassi said he rarely picks up a racket these days. “I’ll give charity lessons,” he said, “but that’s about it.” Becker, who is 35, was on court at the U.S. Open on Tuesday, losing in the first

I understand it,” and he referred to having “the honor of playing him in the last match.” Agassi, who won the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1999, planned to be at Ashe as

As part of the arrangement, $1 per coffee sold at the brand’s cafes at the twoweek tournament will go to the USTA Foundation to benefit the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. Between matches Tuesday, the stadium scoreboards were supposed to show an ad in which Agassi is seen having an espresso in an Italian piazza, leading to a series of flashback videos of him as a kid and a pro. It’s capped by Agassi “transforming” into his long-haired, day-Glo-outfit persona of yesteryear and declaring, “I’m back!” “Initially, when I read it on paper, I was like, ‘No way I’m doing it,’” Agassi said. “But then, when I talked to the director, and they sort of said: ‘Listen, here’s how it’s being filmed. It’s like this flashback. It won’t be a close up.’ ... Just putting on that outfit made me feel real old, let me assure you.”
