THE GREAT ASSIGNMENT KINGDOM MINISTRIES CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH BACK-TO-SCHOOL GIVEBACK
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
Great Assignment Kingdom Ministries felt there was no better way to celebrate their 20th anniversary than by sowing into the lives of those they have been mandated to minister to.
This month, the church, continuing with its year-long anniversary celebrations, is hosting a special back-to-school giveaway.
Each of the church locations in Nassau, Exuma, and Andros celebrated with a mini fair. The Nassau event was held at Popeye’s, Carmichael Road.
Through this initiative, Pastor Leo Adderley said, the church was able to help over 600 students in the communities with
bags and school supplies, as well as help teachers and school support within the ministries with gifts of appreciation.
This church will also continue celebrating "One Stupid Hour" at each of our locations.
“This is a highly prophetic service where we come in to pray, praise and prophesise. There is little to no preaching. These services have been a staple in the identity of our culture,” explained Pastor Adderley.
The biggest celebrations are yet to come for the church when it hosts official 20th anniversary October 13-15 at its headquarters in Bahama Sound, Exuma, and when it dedicates its newly built, debt-free church in Calabash Bay, Central Andros on December 17.
The Great Assignment Kingdom Ministries, was founded in 2003, in George Town, Exuma, by Pastor Adderley. The ministry began in a small, renovated shack in Alien Town, in the back of Leanna Weir’s home.
It was created on the foundation of prayer and fasting, said Pastor Adderley.
In 2005, the ministry was able to dedicate its church building in Bahama Sound, Wild Calla Road 18.
This ministry, said Pastor Adderley, has been the catalyst and forerunner for Pentecostal and Apostolic Ministries on the island of Exuma, which was predominantly Union Baptist.
In December 2019 and January 2020 respectively, the ministry expanded into Fresh Creek, Central
Andros, and to the Epic Plaza on Fire Trail Road in New Providence. The road to the 20-year mark, said Pastor Adderley, has been filled with twist and turns, some uphill battles, but some great successes as well.
“This is a significant milestone for Great Assignment Kingdom Ministries... We have decided to have a year-long celebration,” he said.
“Our vision is to restore a hurting generation back to God. I personally believe that we can do this by being a light in our communities, being a voice for God, in an hour where restoration is needed...We are agents of change and we believe that small things done with great love can change the world. We want to do this one person at a time.”
Music ministry the Royal Priesthood strives to elevate the standards for praise and worship
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net
When it comes to giving praise to God through music and song, the members of the Royal Priesthood know how to give it their best and excel at the task.
Ten years ago, during the early years of their home church, the Embassy International, the music used during the praise and worship section of a service usually came from a YouTube playlist; it was a substitute for a live band.
However, this did not limit the flow of the Holy Spirit during services or the efforts of the Royal Priesthood. Today, however, a live band has helped them step of their game.
The Royal Priesthood group is the brainchild of the church’s co-lead pastors, Apostle Benjamin and Pastor Schevon Smith.
Apostle Smith led the team during at the start before Psalmist Monique Bethel took over.
Over the years, the praise team has had the opportunity to work with one of the nation’s finest sopranos, Dr JoAnn Callender.
Dr Callendar came on board as an adviser to the church’s music ministry and assisted with vocal training.
A few years later, Minister-elect Mark Grant joined the ministry as a keyboard player, and Minister-elect Racquel Roker became one of the praise team leaders.
John Bain was one of first drummers for the band; other drummers were Doran Roberts and Silvan Farquharson, Jr.
The band later got a fulltime drummer in Julian Kemp Jr, who has grown with the team over the last few years. Roland Horton, Jr, added to band’s sound by incorporating the bass guitar.
Now with a live band now in place, the music ministry has been able to take their praise and worship to the next level.
Mr Grant told Tribune Religion the Royal Priesthood praise team has evolved tremendously during the last 10 years, and will continue to soar.
“During this time, the team was growing with new singers being added as the years went on. Shortly thereafter, we were then blessed with the addition of Minister-elect Davian Chase who came on board to assist with training and fine-tuning the vocal abilities of our team members. He came with a wealth of knowledge and experience, being one of the emerging gospel artists in the country,” said Mr Grant.
Being the official praise team of The Embassy International, Mr Grant said, means the group has to be "all things" to all and provide the soundtrack for congregants’ encounters with the Lord.
The group incorporates traditional and contemporary gospel songs, hymns,
devotional choruses, and Junkanoo sounds, complete with goat skin drums and cowbells, into their music.
Mr Grant describes the praise team’s sound as unique, yet versatile.
“As much as possible, we try to choose songs based on the sermon series that our Apostle is teaching from,” he said.
“So, we gather songs with similar themes, so that we present one cohesive thought on any given Sunday. For example, the sermon series for the month of May was ‘Enemies of the Kingdom, Humans will die in my place’, so we chose songs that spoke about victory. We selected songs like ‘Victory Belongs to Jesus’ and ‘Hallelujah, You Have Won the Victory’.”
Over the years, Mr Grant said, the group has incorporated a number of fun themes into their sessions; themes like “Wacky Sunday” and “Emoji Sunday”.
“We also have special dress codes for various
seasons and sermon series, such as camouflage print clothing for a Sunday where the sermon theme relates to victory and warfare,” he said.
“The Royal Priesthood is a family and we treat it is as such. They are really my brothers and sisters; we laugh together, cry together and celebrate each other. We pray together. That doesn't mean we don't have issues, but we deal with them as a family.”
When it comes to positive influences, Mr Grant said Apostle Benjamin Smith is one of the few pastors that he has seen who is fully involved in the church’s worship experience and has a true heart of worship.

POPE SAYS SOME 'BACKWARD' CONSERVATIVES IN US CATHOLIC CHURCH HAVE REPLACED FAITH WITH IDEOLOGY
ROME
Associated Press POPE Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the US Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time.
Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the US Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex
marriage. Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.
Francis made the comments in a private meeting with Portuguese members of his Jesuit religious order while visiting Lisbon on August 5; the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, which is vetted by the Vatican secretariat of state, published a transcript of the encounter Monday.
During the meeting, a Portuguese Jesuit told Francis that he had suffered during a recent sabbatical year in the United States because he came across many Catholics, including some US bishops, who criticised Francis’ 10-year papacy as well as today’s Jesuits.
The 86-year-old Argentine acknowledged his point, saying there was “a very strong, organized, reactionary attitude” in the US church, which he called “backward.” He warned that such an attitude leads to a climate of closure, which was erroneous.
"Doing this, you lose the true tradition and you turn to ideologies to have support. In other words, ideologies replace faith,” he said.
“The vision of the doctrine of the church as a monolith is wrong,” he added. “When you go backward, you make something closed off, disconnected from the roots of the church,” which then has devastating effects on morality.
“I want to remind these people that backwardness is useless, and they must understand that there’s a correct evolution in the understanding of questions
these local churches have a global standard and quality that is admirable.”
Minister Davian Chase said he believes praise and worship teams are vitally important, especially within church culture.
“We bridge generational and cultural gaps with strategic song choices that foster a spirit of togetherness. With The Embassy International being a multicultural and multigenerational church, this is no easy feat, as every generation and culture has their preferences. We endeavour to create an environment where all are heard so that grandparents and their great-grandchildren can worship God together,” he said.
“Everyone needs that moment of intimacy with God, and through the songs that praise and worship teams sing on Sunday mornings they provide space even for the unbeliever to recognise how much they need God.”
Current members of the Royal Priesthood are: Julian Kemp, Roland Horton Jr, Duran Burns, John Bain, Nakera Jarvis, Manessa Forbes, Iyeasha Williams, Keturah Adderley, Neka Woolcock, Shandera Edgecome, Yvette Brown Clarke, Gabriella Prescod, Jadia Morley, Davaro Chase, Rolesha Knowles , Sheniqua Rose, Lakita Kemp , Chavone Deleveaux, Gabriella Finlayson, Minister Raquel Roker, Minister Davian Chase, and Minister Mark Grant.
Mr Grant said the Royal Priesthood has a dynamic schedule for the remainder of the year; the church’s anniversary on Sunday, September 17, along with the Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) at the end of September. Then, the second annual ‘Carols and Cocoa’ will be hosted during the Christmas season.
of faith and morals,” that allows for doctrine to progress and consolidate over time. Francis has previously acknowledged the criticism
directed at him from some US conservatives, once quipping that it was an “honour” to be attacked by Americans.
