The other man was charged with causing the death of a pedestrian as a result of recklessJonathondriving.Sands, 33, faced Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans on four charges: vehicular manslaughter, failure to notify change in ownership, driving in a vehicle not cov ered under third-party risk insurance and driving an unlicensed vehicle. Around 10.25pm on April 30, while driving west on West Bay Street, Sands is alleged to have lost con trol of his 2007 white Nissan Bluebird and crashed into a tree in the median. 2,000 PEOPLE FED AT ISLAND LUCK CARES FOUNDATION EVENT
to the food drive and,
A SMILE from
MORE than 2,000 people were fed through a food drive organised by The Island Luck Cares Founda tion yesterday at Windsor Park. The Need to Feed drive was one of about 20 Island Luck Foundation initia tives held this year. About 2,000 hot plates of chicken, rice, macaroni, other side dishes and refreshments were served. The drive commenced at noon and around that time about 400 people were seen waiting to be served at the gates of the park. This drive is an annual event in which the goal is to feed a large number of people consist ently, said CEO of Island Luck Sebas Bastian. “What $200 could have gotten you a year ago, it an impact based on our con sistency and then to a large magnitude. So normally, when we set up shop, we typically come in to cater to thousands of persons. Not a handful. If you add that type of magnitude with the frequency, impact is being felt on the ground,” he said. Mr Bastian said seeing so many people positively affected by initiatives like this is why he continues to offer“Seeinghelp. the lines and the hundreds of people that have already gathered here, it just basically confirms for us, what we’ve already known, the importance of these types of initiatives and highlights that the need that we suspected is there. If that was not the case, you would not have just 20 minutes after setting up, hundreds of people already gathered in this park.” The event was meant to positively benefit not only those residents of the inner city, but all Bahamians, Mr Bastian said. “The inner city, histori cally has been the area which has always been impacted and by extension has the greatest need, so this is kind of the area that we feel is important for us “This is not for any par ticular group. It goes to show that the financial challenges that we see in the country today are not limited to a certain group of people. Anyone can hit financial hard times. Our efforts are geared toward anyone that’s in need, because we’re all Bahamians. No special requirements, if you want it you just come and you get An unemployed resident of the area, who is a mother of four children and has six for whom she also provides, said the food drive has helped her and her family get through a tough situation. She explained how tough things have been recently. “I’m a mother of four and I have six grandchildren and I am believing in God actu ally, for a house. It’s kind of rough when you have to pay rent. I also sold, I won’t say how much I sold, but I sold (a lot of things) for a house,” she said. She said that women should not be prideful in seeking assistance, espe cially when providing for their“Beingfamily.a Christian is not easy, this past week I was praying about something. I was in church just prostrat ing myself on this prayer board and when I got up and looked on my phone, I saw it on my phone and saw it (a discount for food at Super Value, which is across the street from the park).”Ezra Rahming, a resident of the Bain Town area, said there are many people in his area who are in need. “I think it’s great, because a lot of people really need this help. One of the rea sons why I am here is I am getting something for some body who is more needier than me, a two-year-old child and her mom. I am making that my top prior ity. I believe Island Luck is doing a really good job. I am satisfied with the expe rience I am having at the food drive,” he said. This was Mr Rahming’s first time at a food drive and he felt very encouraged by the assistance that was offered freely, he said. Last year, the annual Need to Feed Programme, which had been held at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium, fed over 4,000 people with boxes and packages of food.

MRS. SHERRIE MORLEY
DISASTER Reconstruc tion Authority officials revealed yesterday that major construction on the Abaco community centre and hurricane shelter will begin this month, lasting throughout 2023. DRA manager director Aarone Sargent gave an update on the project and other post Dorian relief ini tiatives being organised by the agency during a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday.
AUTHORITY TO MERGE WITH NEMA
SOME people who received aid from the previ ous administration’s small home repair programme used the money to buy such things as “high end mattresses” and mirrors, Disaster Reconstruction Authority executive chair man Alex Storr said yesterday.Hiscomments came while announcing that the DRA has launched a new home repair programme geared towards assisting Abaco and Grand Bahama residents with post Hurri cane Dorian reconstruction. The new programme, called HARP (Homeown ers Assistance and Relief Programme) will replace the former administration’s small home repair initia tive and will focus on roof, window siding, plumbing and electrical repairs. Some $2m has been allo cated so far for the new programme, which is being launched in phases.
“The programme will be different from the predeces sor as the authority will now seek to procure building supplies in bulk and directly include direct employment of skilled labour,” Mr Storr said during a press confer ence at the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday. “We have established a reconstruction unit to assist as many homeown ers as possible with their reconstruction efforts. We do recognise that all governments are limited financially which is why we sought to change the model to this “Purchaseone. orders and direct grants will no longer be used as we discovered some received funds but their homes are still in repair. “On that note, I would like to announce that home owners and businesses are being notified that all out standing purchase orders that are out there are being cancelled.”Hesaidthe first phase of the programme’s launch will consist of DRA workers assessing storm impacted homes.Theprocess begins today and will continue for about two to three weeks. “They will go door-todoor with those that are currently in our database as well as those who call to request assistance,” Mr Storr also said. “If you have experienced damage that you can prove was caused by Hurricane Dorian, please contact our offices and a representative will assist. “We have recently devel oped an assessment tool app that will be used by our assessors to log build ing material needs and assessment reports for each homeowner.”MrStorr said the app will allow workers to be more organised and have a better understanding of the needs of storm victims, noting there were several deficiencies with the former programme.Hesaidthe Davis admin istration found some people who received funds from the previous government for home repair used the money for purchases not on the DRA’s approved list instead of fixing damage to their“Wehomes.discovered catego ries of damage that was not confined to reconstruction parameters and what is con sidered major damage,” he said. “In some instances, we saw high-end mattresses and interior mirrors, for example, being purchased with aid Furtherfunds.”elaborating on these purchases, he added: “I saw one purchase order and invoice that was paid for I think a $2,500 mattress using funds that were supposed to be used for home repair.” He said many of the pur chased items were not on the DRA approved list and instead approved by work ers in the agency. He also claimed that the programme was oversubscribed.Askedifhe thought the initiative was being abused under the former adminis tration, the DRA chairman only said he preferred let ting investigations run its course, adding the chips will “fall where they may”. Hurricane Dorian hit Abaco as a Category 5 hurricane on September 1, 2019 before barreling toward Grand Bahama. The storm left thousands of homes either destroyed or damaged and hundreds of residents displaced. Three years later, Mr Storr said there are about 1,500 homeowners who are still in need of home repairs. These are storm vic tims who had applied to the agency for help, but have yet to receive funding approval.“That doesn’t include those who have not applied (to the DRA) before for various reasons or those that were rejected,” the DRA chairman added. Asked yesterday if he thought $2m allocated for the initiative was enough to help survivors, Mr Storr said the amount was only “a start and a tip of the iceberg”.Hesaid the DRA expects more donations in the days ahead and added that offi cials are working feverishly to get more assistance. Mr Storr continued: “That is why we are still seeking donations and we are working on several ways to get more material. We have negotiations with NGOS as well as persons who have interest in some of the major suppliers in the US to try and get better prices and some of them are even willing to donate an equal amount to what we purchased.”Healsogave an update on the demolition process of the government’s dome project in Spring City. Plans to have the struc tures demolished and taken off the property by August were announced in July. “The Ministry of Hous ing has carriage over that project,” said Mr Storr. “I know from speaking with them, there has been a short extension granted, but so far I think that there are twenty-two persons that have moved out and have received or are in the stages of receiving their assistance. “Others have reported their plans and so we hope those that may need assis tance, like I know some needed repairs to their existing structures, so we are willing to facilitate that and we will be trying to help them get out as soon as possible.”
It was initially expected that the centre would be completed by May 2021, before the beginning of the 2021 hurricane season. However, that target was missed and months later, the Minnis administration was voted out of office.
The Davis administration has said it is committed to assisting residents on both Abaco and Grand Bahama and furthering restora tion efforts on the storm impacted islands.

Mrs. Sherrie Morley has successfully completed the two-year professional program and is being honoured for having attained the highest scores within this year’s graduating class.
Te Institute which is currently registered with NAECOB (National Accreditation and Equivalency Council of the Bahamas) was established over 30 years ago and frst introduced the Paralegal programme in 1995 and since that time has been responsible for the training of a large number of Paralegals who are engaged in professional appointments throughout the Bahamas.
He said: “We are happy to announce that we have completed the professional phase which is geo-techni cal, civil structural and an updated architectural work of the Abaco hurricane shelter and community centre.“We have made several amendments to the footprint of the shelter which include making the centre accessible to residents who have dis abilities and we have added a part of the shelter to allow for shelter entrance into the hurricane“Further, shelter.based on the reassessments of the foundational footprint, the foundation was raised to mitigate against major flooding which will be necessary for a hurricane shelter.”Hesaid the construction will not exceed the DRA’s budget for the project, which is estimated at $2m. “We will continue to rebuild the confidence in this project by satisfying the report ing requests by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) which represents the Indian government and their $1m donation to this pro ject,” Mr Sargent said. “Major construction will begin on site by mid to end September and last throughout 2023.’’ He also revealed that it is the DRA’s intention to rep licate the “state owned” hurricane shelter model so similar centres can be built throughout The Bahamas. “We are developing pro ject plans to build at least four purpose-built shel ters by 2024 on Cat Island and San Salvador, Grand Bahama, Exuma and Eleuthera,” he added. The need for hurricane proof shelters in the coun try was highlighted in 2019 after Hurricane Dorian laid waste to homes, churches and other facilities that were used to shelter resi dents during the monster storm.Recognising this need, the Minnis administra tion participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the hurricane shelter and community centre in the Central Pines community in December 2020, saying the facility will be capable of accommodating 800 people during a hurricane.
DISASTER Reconstruction Authority executive chairman Alex Storr yesterday.
THE Disaster Recon struction Authority (DRA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will merge under a new agency that “will manage all aspects” of dis aster preparedness, DRA Executive Chairman Alex Storr revealed yesterday.
At the time, former Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said the coun try was facing a climate emergency and in order to combat it, there must be comprehensive and dra matic changes in hurricane preparedness.Henoted that it was critical that red tape, which might hinder recovery and reconstruction efforts, be removed. However, since its incep tion, the authority has at times come under scrutiny for its Hurricane Dorian response, more specifically its handling of deceased unidentified storm victims and hurricane related funds. The Davis administra tion has promised to review the work of the DRA, noting various concerns and irregularities with how the authority was managed. According to Mr Storr yesterday, some $70m has been spent by the DRA to date to assist with recon struction efforts on the storm-hit islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. “The bulk of that went to debris management site,” heWhensaid. asked how much was spent on debris man agement, he replied that it was “some $37m.” This comes as the author ity continues its probe into several contracts that were issued to manage debris management sites in Abaco and Grand Bahama after several “red flags” were detected.Meanwhile, a forensic audit is said to be underway into the DRA. When asked for an update on those investiga tions yesterday, the DRA executive chairman told reporters: “I expect to have that very shortly and the ministry should be tabling that when the House resumes.”
“I would like to announce that under the prime minis ter’s vision and Blueprint for Change, the Disaster Management Unit along with DRA and NEMA are working closely together on new legislation to restruc ture disaster management agencies in the country to more effectively and into an agile agency for responding to disasters,” Mr Storr said during a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday. “It is envisioned that the new authority will (be established) to manage all aspects of disaster in the country. The DRA and NEMA will all merge under one banner in this new entity.”“The new entity will focus disaster on risk reduction and mitigation, resiliency planning and development and rapid response and recovery.”TheDRA was formed by the Minnis administra tion in 2019 to strengthen the country’s response to disaster preparedness and management following Hurricane Dorian’s devas tation on Abaco and Grand Bahama. The body was offi cially established after the passing of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority Bill, 2019, which empow ered it to be responsible for management and over sight of reconstruction in disaster zones among other functions.

BAHAMAS Union of Teachers President Belinda Wilson expressed concern that many new teachers are still awaiting letters of con firmation and geographical posting allowances. She spoke about the situ ation when asked about the union’s assessment on the reopening of school. The union president noted the assessments are still ongoing.“Weare keeping a watch ful eye on TA Thompson Junior High, Government High, CH Reeves Jr High in particular. They had major works done that (are) incomplete. We expect that the campuses will be suita ble enough for teachers and students to occupy,” she told The Tribune yesterday. “If any campus is not conducive then the Minis try of Education will have to find alternative sites. As for health and safety, the Ministry of Education has stated that the health and safety protocols have not changed and we will be using those that presently exist.”MsWilson had previously noted the union’s concerns about the ongoing con struction on TA Thompson, Government High, CH Reeves, Sybil Strachanadding “works should be completed soon”. Works and Utilities Min ister Alfred Sears revealed the completion of school repairs, inclusive of capi tal works, throughout the country is projected to cost the government some $30m.Meanwhile, Ms Wilson revealed other issues the union“Wehas.are concerned that many of the new teachers are still awaiting letters and geographical posting allow ance. A lot of them are posted to Family Islands but unable to travel with out the funds needed for ticket, freight for their per sonal items to be shipped, security deposits for their utilities.”Thiscomes after Educa tion Minister Glenys Hanna Martin announced that her ministry has recruited more than 100 new teach ers to address shortages while safety in public school campuses is expected to be increased with a new train ing programme for security officers.Onthe teacher short age, the minister said the new recruits have vary ing specialties adding that additional recruitment is underway to meet scarcity subject areas and deficits in some schools.
The judge noted the woman claimed she “has felt like a rape victim during the ordeal of sexual intercourse with the respondent.”Whileshe granted the couple’s divorce and accepted the petitioner’s evidence, the judge said the issue raised by the parties of non-consensual and forced intercourse along with the word “rape” required the court to consider the term in context of Bahamian marriage laws. It was highlighted in the judgement the offence of rape is set out in section three of the Sexual Offences Act which states rape is the act of any person not under 14 years of age having sexual intercourse with another person who is not his spouse, without the con sent of that other person; without consent which has been extorted by threats or fear of bodily harm; with consent obtained by per sonating the spouse of that other person; with consent obtained by false and fraud ulent representation as to the nature and quality of theInact.response to the judge ment, Ms Wallace spoke about the issue regard ing the courts tackling the problem.“The current admin istration continues to demonstrate its disinter est in addressing the issue of marital rape, putting it off and explicitly stating that it is prioritising other issues. People in situations of vulnerability and press ing social and legal issues are being ignored,” she asserted.“Inthis case, we see that a woman was being repeat edly raped by her husband, and the court refuses to acknowledge it as rape, blaming it on the law and abdicating responsibility to use the law to protect human rights. The ruling refers to sex with a wife as a man’s ‘right,’ but does not reference the wife’s actual right to bodily autonomy or safety.“On August 20, at one of the sessions in our CEDAW (Convention) Speaker Series, committee member Rhoda Reddock focused on Article 5 of the Convention and Bahamian attorney and CEDAW committee member Marion Bethel joined her to talk about the ability of judges to use CEDAW, whether or not it has been domesticated by the state, and this has been done in other countries.
“It is clear that Chris tian values, morals, and whatever passes for love are not sufficient to ensure a safe, healthy environment or healthy relationships. We have come to depend on the law to distinguish between right and wrong, and on judges to interpret the law. Obviously, both need significant improvements, and it cannot wait.” Equality Bahamas con tinues to run the #Strike5ive campaign which advocates for the criminalisation of marital rape in the “most explicit way”. “The Sexual Offences Act needs to be amended to remove ‘who is not his spouse’ from the definition of rape in Section 3, Sec tion 15 must be repealed, we need a statutory defini tion of consent along with a clause of non-immunity on the basis of marriage, and there must be no tempo ral limitation,” Ms Wallace said. However, Dr Sandra Dean-Patterson, the direc tor of the Bahamas Crisis Centre, saw the judgment as a step in the right direc tion for “Well, progress.Iwould certainly applaud and commend the judge in that case for put ting the reality which is that rape in a marriage is not illegal, but that that behaviour is wrong and that behaviour needs to be addressed, and there needs to be consequences for it,” she“Andargued.so we definitely would commend her and support her with that. And you know, over the years, the Crisis Centre has talked about the violence that too many women live with in marriages and inti mate relationships and there should be recogni tion, the fact that that’s unacceptable. You know, marriage is not a license to beat or to rape. You know you don’t have the right to do that and you shouldn’t use marriage as cover or shelter for behaviour that’s wrong.”
AN activist said the current administration continues to demonstrate its disinterest in address ing the issue of marital rape by “putting it off” and explicitly stating that it is prioritising other issues. Alicia Wallace, direc tor of Equality Bahamas, told The Tribune yesterday that people in situations of vulnerability as well as pressing social and legal issues are being “ignored.” Her remarks came after Justice J Denise LewisJohnson handed down a ruling on August 29 involving a divorce case in which a woman claimed her husband would force intercourse and made her feel like a “rape victim” throughout their marriage. While ruling that the hus band was cruel for forcing his wife to have sex against her will on numerous occa sions, it was found that “there is no rape in mar riage” under Bahamian law.
also ordered that he report to Carmichael Station the last Sunday of every month. Should the accused breach these conditions, his bail will be cancelled and he will be placed on remand. Sands will return to court on November 24. He is rep resented by Ian Cargill.
‘In this case, we see that a woman was being repeatedly raped by her husband, and the court refuses to acknowledge it as rape, blaming it on the law and responsibilityabdicatingto use the law to protect human rights.’
Another man, Price Dean, 52, faced Magistrate Vogt-Evans on a charge of vehicular manslaughter in connection with the death of Winston Davis. Around 1.55am on June 8, according to police reports, Dean is said to have been driving the wrong way on Frederick Street while speeding in a red 2007 Toyota Passo. At the intersection onto Bay Street, Dean’s car alleg edly slammed into a white 2014 Honda Fit that had the green light travelling east. After the collision, the white Fit came to a stop on the northern sidewalk of Bay Street pinning the victim Davis under the car. While the Jaws of Life were deployed by rescue services to lift the vehicle, Davis would later be pronounced dead at the scene. Dean, who is still wearing a leg brace after the crash, was not required to enter a plea in court. He was granted $10,000 bail. Under the conditions of his bail Dean is expected to sign in at the Grove Police Station on the last Sunday of every month.Failure to comply with these terms would result in his bail being revoked and Dean being put in remand. Dean’s Voluntary Bill of Indictment is expected to be served on November 24. He was also represented by Mr Cargill.

“All right-thinking Baha mians must wonder how the Prime Minister could actu ally admonish Bahamians to be frugal when he leads what is proving to be the most extravagant, partying government in the history of The Bahamas,” Mr Pin tard“Thissaid.is an administration that takes large contin gents on first class travel around the world. This is an administration that books expensive private jets. This is an administration that hired selected politi cal allies on extravagant contracts. This is an admin istration that throws lavish parties, events and celebra tions at every turn. “We demand that the Prime Minister lead by example and demon strate his commitment to frugality by immediately cutting down on the runa way spending that his government undertakes on a daily basis at the taxpayer expense,” Mr Pintard said. On Sunday, Mr Davis urged Bahamians to be frugal with their spending habits due to rising infla tion, saying it appears that the country is “in for a rough ride for another few months” based on the pre dictions of finance experts.

FNM leader Michael Pintard.
THE Free National Movement says Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis can do much more to help Bahamians deal with inflation.Ina statement issued yesterday, FNM leader Michael Pintard said the government should cut the tax on gasoline at least until the end of the fiscal year; eliminate VAT on all breadbasket, medicines and baby items; suspend the VAT charges on a broad range of food sta ples outside of the listed breadbasket items at least until the end of the fiscal year; and expand social welfare vouchers to qualify ing Bahamian families that are targeted at support for food, rent, cooking gas, care for children and other key essentials.Healso suggested that the government should stop its plan to add VAT to expenses covered by medi calMrinsurance.Pintard said the suggested tax relief measures must be paid for through additional revenue measures or reduced spending. To cover the cut in gasoline tax and the elimination of VAT on essential items, the FNM calls on the government to put back in place the 12 percent VAT on real estate over $2 million adding that this tax cut has only ben efited wealthy Bahamians and“Theforeigners.government should also abandon its current illegal tax cut on yachts for theFurther, wealthy. the govern ment should eliminate the $4m increase in the inter national travel budget, radically reduce the $30m allocation for consultants, and scale back planned spending for events, entertainment and other non-essential items. “The Davis administra tion must give priority to helping struggling Baha mian families deal with inflation, instead of giving the tax breaks to their wealthy friends and back ers,” Mr Pintard said. His statement referred to Mr Davis’ recent comments regarding his “admitted inability in addressing infla tion” and his “hypocritical” calls for Bahamians to be frugal. While Mr Pintard said it is in each person’s best interest to manage their scarce resources wisely given the challenging eco nomic times, the Davis administration “lacks the moral authority to issue that guidance given their example of spending.”

“One mechanism used to curb inflation is to reduce spending, but only to the point of not purchasing essential goods and ser vices and switching to cheaper substitutes. Any reduced spending, will lead to a corresponding decrease in employment and if prices do not come down it can lead to stag flation. That is where the economy becomes stag nant but inflation still abounds. Since most of the factors that are driv ing inflation are external to The Bahamas, the last thing the Davis govern ment needs to do is take drastic measures ad send the economy into reces sion. The circumstances are unusual because even though consumers in the US are cutting back and postponing the purchase of non essential items, the economy is still bustling. Not only are there still employment opportuni ties, but workers are now demanding and receiving record wages . REVELLERS throw tomatoes at each other during the annual “Tomatina”, tomato fight fiesta in the village of Bunol near Valencia, Spain, yesterday. The tomato fight took place once again following a two-year suspension owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
THE Biden administration hopes to make getting a COVID-19 booster as routine as going in for the yearly flu shot. That’s at the heart of its campaign to sell the newly authorised shot to an American public that has widely rejected COVID-19 boosters since they first became available last fall. Shots of the updated boosters, spe cifically designed by Pfizer and Moderna to respond to the omicron strain, could start within days. The US government has purchased 170 million doses and is emphasizing that everyone will have free access to the booster. White House COVID-19 coordina tor Dr Ashish Jha said this latest round of shots will offer protection during the busy cold and flu season, with the hope of transitioning people to get the vac cine yearly. Typically, at least half of US adults get a flu shot. “We expect them to provide more durable protection over time,” Jha said in an interview Wednesday with The Associated Press. “The goal very much is to get to a point where people get their COVID shot on a regular basis, the way they do their flu shot.”
Community health workers in North Carolina, home to the country’s lowest COVID-19 booster rate, like the strat egy, especially because of confusion among some people about vaccine schedules.“Ibelieve in keeping things simple,” said Marty Stamey, an outreach coor dinator for the Mountain Area Health Education Center in western North Car olina. “I’ve heard a lot of people say, ‘I think I’ll just wait and try to do it like the flu shots.’” The White House plan also relies in part of on local health departments, providers and community groups to reach out and encourage people to get the updated booster. Pharmacies, health providers and state or local health departments are preparing to send text messages to millions of people that will encourage them to get a booster this fall, White House offi cialsJhasaid.said he recommends most Amer icans get the booster by the end of October.Still, this latest vaccination campaign faces several challenges. A majority of Americans got their first and second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine when it was released last year but they’ve been more reluctant to get a booster jab, with less than half getting their first booster since it became avail able late last year. Congress also has not moved forward on President Joe Biden’s $22.5 billion request earlier this year for the COVID19 response. Republicans criticized the request, pointing to the $1.9 tril lion already spent on responding to the pandemic. Running short on funds, the government announced it would stop shipping COVID-19 tests to people’s homes after Friday. And COVID-19 funding is drying up for many of the community groups that received millions of federal tax dol lars to hire workers who spent months reaching deep into neighborhoods with door knocks, mobile vaccine clinics and posters encouraging people to inoculate againstWhiteCOVID-19.Houseofficials say those local leaders deserve a lot of credit for stamping out misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine and convincing many around the country that the shot will protect them. “Those are the really critical messen gers,” Jha said. That on-the-ground work has been crucial to getting people vaccinated in the rural, Spanish- and Haitian-speaking communities that the Migrant Clinicians Network has reached throughout Texas, California and Maryland with its $8.5 million federal grant. “Simply having the vaccines available is one thing, but getting the shots in the arms is another,” said Amy Liebman, a chief program officer for the nonprofit group. Some of those local health organiza tions, too, are now stretched as they work to get low vaccination rates among children under 12 up. Only a third of 5to 11-year-olds received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine since becoming eligible late last year. Meanwhile, just 7% of children under 5 have gotten a first dose since it was made available this summer.DrNiharika Khanna at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has just started making progress on convincing new mothers that the vaccine is safe and effective for their babies. Her program, which has hired more than 269 health workers and admin istered more than 12,000 vaccinations and boosters across Delaware, Mary land, Virginia and West Virginia, isn’t quite ready to transition back to pushing COVID-19 boosters. “All of these people, all of these rela tionships we’ve carefully cultivated are at risk for falling apart,” Khanna said. “Today if you were to say to me switch to booster, I’d say no. I need another two to three weeks to really get these people going.”

AFTER FNM chairman Dr Duane Sands said that it was difficult to take Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis seriously on inflation when his administration is spending so much money, readers of www.tribune242. com added their voices to theObserverdebate. said: “If one were to follow the logic of Mr Sands, per the article, then part of the solution to the inflation issue is to stop eating and ignore the utili ties bills Tribanontoo.” countered: “Your unhelpful com parison of wastful and unnecessary government spending to the spend ing members of the public must need do in order to stay alive is not relevant to the discussion here. PARTS of New Provi dence experienced power outages yesterday due to a partial system interrup tion at Bahamas Power and Light.Around 10.30am, BPL advised customers that its teams were working to restore power to the affected areas. Around half an hour later, power had been restored to sev eral areas such as Market Street north to Bay Street, Fort Charlotte, Blue Hill Road north and south. Other areas were restored between 11am and noon, with restoration continuing in impacted areas. The Tribune yesterday canvassed some local busi nesses that complained about the interrupted power service. An employee of Crave at Studio Deli revealed that during the outage, the business lost up to ten cus tomers because they were unable to prepare the food without“Well, electricity.wefunction solely on electricity so that means the bread couldn’t get toasted and meat couldn’t be warmed unless you fried it. We were unable to func tion properly for an hour and about fifteen minutes,” the worker said. The cafe worker said BPL should perform its opera tions when businesses are closed rather than disturb ing owners and employees. “You don’t know who you’re really affecting. It could be a food business, a law firm, or even a school. Everyone works during the day. I think that most of their work should be done after four or five o’clock when everyone goes home so it wouldn’t affect anyone.”Selena Sweeting, an owner of an Airbnb rental, expressed her displeasure about the power outage saying it was an inconven ience to her foreign guests. She noted her guests were confused when the outage happened.MsSweeting said: “It was very inconvenient espe cially since there was no announcement made to any type of outages so that we can prepare for it. Secondly, when you have guests, of course, they don’t under stand the power outages issue that we always experi ence over here.” She explained the outage not only impacted her busi ness but also affected her ten-year-old granddaughter who does online schooling from“Shehome.missed two classes and I myself was doing an online training course that I had to abandon, that I had paid for, so it’s very incon venient. Especially since Covid, there are a lot of people who now work from home,” she said. She said that more should be done to ensure persons have continuous power. Ms Sweeting added: “You’re (BPL) disconnect ing us for non-payment but why are we being discon nected for their inability to provide consistent ser vice, I think it’s rather disingenuous.”

TWO FACE COURT OVER BAIL VIOLATIONS
MAN JAILED FOR STEALING $2,500
By JADE RUSSELL jrussell@tribunemedia.net
TWO men were charged in Magistrate’s Court yesterday in sepa rate cases of bail violation for murder and attempted murder.James Johnson, 25, repre sented by attorney Audrey Bullard-Bonamy, faced Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans on charges of threats of death and three counts of violation of bail conditions.Johnson is accused of threatening to kill Corin Saunders on August 25 in Matthew Town, Inagua. The defendant is further charged with breaching the conditions of his Supreme Court bail for attempted murder and armed robbery. Johnson is said to have left his residence outside the bounds of his 9pm – 6am curfew on July 27 and 29 in New Providence. John son also reportedly failed to sign in at the Grove Police Station by 6pm on August 25, the same day he allegedly threatened Mr Saunders.Incourt, Johnson pleaded not guilty to all four charges against him. The prosecution then objected to the defendant’s bail application contending that with his history if he is granted bail, he is likely to reoffend during his release. Johnson’s counsel then cited the fact that her client has been on bail for four years in reference to his Supreme Court matter and has been wearing an elec tronic monitoring device during that time. While the defendant claimed that officers would not allow him to sign in at the station as he lacked the proper ID, the magistrate still denied him bail at this time.As such, Johnson will be remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correc tional Services (BDCS) until he returns to court for trial on November 2. The other man, Alexan der Roberts, 26, also faced Magistrate Vogt-Evans on five counts of violation of bailHeconditions.wasgranted bail after being charged in connec tion with the shooting death of Brandon Rolle at the Fish Fry on July 11, 2021. On July 25, and August 13, 16, 21, and 29, Roberts breached the conditions of his bail by leaving his resi dence outside the hours of his court imposed 9pm to 6am curfew. In court, Roberts pleaded guilty to all charges. In explaining his actions to the magistrate, he said he only breached his curfew to pick up his girlfriend from work as the sole licensed driver in their household. Roberts then asked for the court’s leniency.Magistrate Vogt-Evans accepted the defendant’s guilty plea and convicted him for the offence. As such he was sentenced to one year at BDCS for all charges to be served concurrently.Roberts is further expected to pay a $2,500 fine or risk an additional six months in custody. The defendant has the right to appeal sentencing within seven days.

Many men around the world are wearing ties much less. The Speaker of the lower house of the Aus tralian Parliament recently ruled that male members need no longer wear a tie with their Parliamentsjacket.make their own rules on appropri ate attire for members. It is time for The Bahamas Parliament to allow male members to wear appro priate long sleeve, cuffed guayaberas in Parliament. This could lead to more Bahamian men wearing formal and appropriate guayaberas daily in office settings.Ithas become swelter ingly ridiculous to see men in 90-degree weather going to work in coats and ties, while sweating profusely. More schools might move toward the guayabera as the uniform for boys, ditch ing the tie year-round and not just during warmer months.Imagine cabinet meetings during which most mem bers and officials were now wearing guayaberas. Any thing to cool the passions of sometimes hot-underthe-collar politicians and executives would be wel comed by most Bahamians. In addition to commer cial benefits, the wearing of guayaberas by more men on more occasions might offer Bahamians a greater sensitivity about our ties to our region. Shirts embroi dered with Bahamian designs could be sold to tourists and given as gifts to visiting diplomats and guests. These guayaberas, long and short sleeve, may come in an archipelago of colours of the land and sea, includ ing colours derived from pulp of the guinep, the juicy inside of a Bahamian guava or mango, the shell of a cooked crawfish, the many shades of jade and aqua of our waters, and others from our palette of flora. Further, as the climate continues to warm and energy costs continue to rise, the Government of The Bahamas should move to a full fleet of electric cars.Though there are already hybrids and some elec tric cars in the fleet, the Government can decrease its huge gas bill and dem onstrate its commitment to reducing carbon emis sions by setting targets for moving to a full elec tric fleet throughout the country. Moreover, why are we still buying black or darker coloured cars for cabinet ministers, permanent sec retaries and other senior officials in a tropical Baha mas? In Australia, the prime minister’s official car is white. The fashion we wear and the objects of daily life demonstrate our conscious ness and sense of the times, especially certain signs of the times, like climate change.Inpromoting more cli mate-appropriate fashions and modes of transporta tion, we might design and offer to ourselves a pow erful cultural cum fashion statement about a more sustainable and environ mentally conscious future.

IN The Bahamas and Jamaica, we call it the bush jacket. In the Dominican Republic it is commonly known as the chacabana shirt. In Haiti, it is some times called the guyabel, while in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, it is often referred to as the shirt-jac.Butthroughout much of Latin America, especially in Cuba and Mexico, where the history and fashion of the shirt are mostly derived, it is known as the guayabera. While the origin of the name is debated, one storyline sug gests that it is derived from the Spanish word, “guay aba” or Distinguished“guava”. by its “two vertical stripes of pleating and/or embroidery” on the front and a bottom straight cut, [the guayabera is one of] the most iconic piece[s] of clothing associated with the cultural life of Latin American and Caribbean populations worldwide.” The shirt is worn outside of theThepants.pleats of the guaya bera run the length of the front and back of the shirt, which is typically made of cotton, linen or silk. Some shirts have two pleats in the front and one in the back. Many of the shirts, though not all, have four front pockets. Nowadays, many of the more dressed guayaberas are sans pock ets. There are long and short sleeve shirts, with the latter,Thoughcuffed.initially designed for men, there are female versions, and even miniature shirts designed for stuffed animals, like Teddy Bears. Though the shirt was tradi tionally white or pastel, they are available in a rainbow of colours, often with elabo rate embroidery. In Mexico, black guayaberas, adorned with colourful embroidered flowers and French cuffs are popular as formal wear for some occasions. In 2019, Cuba reinstated the shirt as its “official formal dress garment”. Guayaberas are formal wear for offices and special occasions through much of Latin and Central America and the Caribbean. In Belize, which has been described as “the Carib bean beat in the heart of Central America”, the guayabera is formal wear for offices, including gov ernment offices. It is worn by members of the House of Representatives during sittings and by the prime minister and cabinet min isters on a daily basis, including for state occasions. Some Belizeans have their long sleeve guayaberas tailored, sometimes with intricate patterns, includ ing Mayan symbolism. Such shirts, pun intended, can cost a pretty penny. In the Americas, the shirts are found at mass market stores as well as in high-end shops, including in Florida where a gentleman may have his shirts crafted by expert Cuban tailors.
There are many threads to weave to recount the his tory of the guayabera. Some suggest that the original design was derived from the lace-like white Philippine barong tagalog, making its way from that country to the Americas, specifically Aca pulco, Mexico, and to Cuba. Others dispute that connection, noting the differences in the shirts. Another narrative is that the shirt was popularised in Cuba, resembling uni forms worn by Spanish and Cuban soldiers, while “other sources describe its use in the countryside by Cuban landowners and fieldworkers”.Justasthere is a rich social history to the shirt, there is also a more modern history. Mexican and Cuban leaders wore the guayabera as both a fashion and politi cal statement, donning the shirts instead of a coat and tie, which they believed were too colonial. The design and produc tion of the shirts provided domestic sources of work, income and industry, uncontrolled by First World corporations and manufac turers. Wearing a guayabera was also more practical in warmer climates. The guayabera was worn by leaders and activists such as Cesar Chavez, Fidel Castro, Belizean Founding Father George Price, and Jamaican Prime Minister Michael“ManleyManley. specifi cally advocated for the guayabera as an anti-colo nialist mode of dress, and conversely the shirt was later banned in Parlia ment by the conservative Jamaica Labour Party.” Though the shirt was a symbol in some leftist quarters, its practical ity and cultural roots and resonance led to the future!aguayaberanomiccreativeandoccasion.eralnumberprimeevents.variousinworeEdmundfounderentedBethel,torthebytheeasywear,bera,introductioncoatliketeachers.BahamiangiousforshirtwearingIndies,thethewidespreadwearinggenerationBahamianssibilitiesdesignTheothercansandmarkets,arrayuitous,guayabera,leadingofheritage.richmatelyingYucatanatopthebetweeninbetweenandinsula.itsgins,socialnicitiespoliticalnowCaribbean,LatinguayaberadispersionwidespreadofthethroughoutAmericaandthewiththeshirtwornbypeopleofallpersuasions,ethandeconomicandcircumstances.WhateverthehistoricoritheguayaberamadewaytotheYucatanpenThereisatexturedinterwovenhistoryMexicoandCubageneral,andinparticularCubaandMerida,capitaloftheYucatan,thenorthernendofthePeninsulaadjointheGulfofMexico.Merida,acityofapproxi900,000,enjoysaMayanandcolonialToday,itisonetheworld’scapitalsandproducersofthewhichareubiqwithadazzlingofshirtsavailableindepartmentstoresboutiqueshops.ThereismuchthatMexiandCubanscanteachcountries,includingBahamas,abouttheandcommercialposoftheguayabera.ofacertainmayrecallthattheshirtbecameinthe1970s.Bahamiansstudyinginregion,includingatUniversityoftheWestreturnedhomebushjackets.Thebecamedailywearmanypriestsandreliministers,aswellasandWestIndianManymen,whodidnottherestrictionsoftheandtie,welcomedtheoftheguayawhichwascoolertolessexpensiveandtomaintain.ThebushjacketwassignatureshirtwornculturalgiantslikecomposerandDirecofCulture,EClementandthemultitalculturaladvocateandofJumbeyVillage,Moxey.Scoresofmenandboystheshirttochurch,someofficesandatsocialandspecialEveryBahamianministerandagoodofgovernorsgenhaveworntheshirtonAmidstclimatechange,agreaterfocusontheeconomyandecodiversification,theshouldhavepromisingandbright

concept that generally still makes Americans cringe. An influential Democratic senator proudly proclaims that he is a socialist, and he has accumulated a lot of political power in his party. National insurance is called social security in the U.S. Like in The Bahamas, it’s supposed to provide a reliable government-man aged pension scheme that can cushion the economic vagaries of retirement for workers. But if you ask almost any American under the age of 30, they’ll tell you they have no realistic expectation that they’ll ever collect a dime from Social Security. They all think that the system will be broke and broken by the time they are eligible for benefits. The money that is taken out of their paychecks every month goes to support their parents and even grandpar ents. Few say they believe anything will be left for them 40 or 50 years hence. Many people will eventu ally blame this year’s lavish government spending and the rising national debt for deficiencies in basic safety net programmes like social security. But the Democrats are positively proud of all that government spending. For them, it is something to boastTheyabout.hope it will carry them to victory in November.TheDems don’t look too good on education either. Tethered as they continue to be to the powerful National Education Association’s public school teachers’ union, the Democrats often oppose innovation and new ideas like charter schools, even when they appear to raise standards and results in some of the poorest and least well-served of Ameri can school districts. Most American employ ers well recall the last year as one of their most frus trating, and a big reason is the big federal govern ment handouts to most Americans.Designed to help voters weather the storms of the COVID pandemic, severe recession and the shut tering or scaling-back of countless small businesses, these payments also had the effect of persuading millions of workers that when the economic climate improved, they could make more money by eschewing a return to the work force and simply sitting at home on the sofa, watching tel evision and cashing their government cheques. Why work when the government would pay you for not doing so?Government spend ing seems out of control. Schools and education policy are a mess. Real socialist ideas have entered the Ameri can political mainstream, like free community col lege education. It isn’t too unreasonable to anticipate that any independent voter might recoil at this cocktail of policies.Sowhat are the supposed forty percent of Americans supposed to do about this? What should they think? For these millions of undecided citizens, the sad, dispiriting state of policy options and the legislative decisions of both major political parties may well lead undecided voters to either vote for candidates they personally dislike least or simply not vote at all. We’re not seeing democ racy’s finest hour in America right now.
ACCORDINGto the venerable Gallup Poll, over the past two years, forty percent of surveyed voters have con sistently identified their political affiliation as “inde pendent.” Roughly thirty percent said they were Republicans and a similar percentage declared them selves to be Democrats. GORBACHEV died in Moscow on Tuesday. This veteran Communist operative, 91, rose through party ranks to become General Secretary of the Commu nist Party of the USSR over the course of a relentlessly upward-directed career span ning nearly 40 years. He was the last president of the USSR for six years from 1985 – 1991, and some historians have described Gorbachev as the most consequential political figure of the last half of the 20th Century. He implemented policies in Moscow designed to restructure a Soviet economy sagging under the immense weight of a hopeless arms competition with Ronald Reagan’s defense-happy United States. He sought an openness in Russian society that permitted freedoms hardly experienced by most Soviet citizens at any point in their Gorbachev’slives.reward for this ambitious, courageous creativity? The USSR lost the Cold War to the U.S. It lost virtually all of its non-Russian speaking empire as over a dozen newly independent nations rose from the Soviet ruins. Russians experienced some of the benefits of a com paratively free-market economy in the 1990’s, but by the end of the decade, they found themselves back in a historically familiar position under the political yoke of a powerful autocrat. That autocrat was, and is, Vladimir Putin. And his Ukraine war shows that the Russians, like the Americans and others, simply cannot compel themselves to apply the lessons of their own political and mili taryObservingpast. the current direction of his beloved Russia, Gorbachev could hardly have passed away peacefully.

military strength to deter foreign adventurism that can lead to wars; generally restrained social welfare spending; a broadly tradi tional approach to faith and organized religion, and a reverence for individualism. You would not recognize today’s Republican Party. Over the course of the past fifty years, the GOP has lost its allegiance to the “sen sible, practical” politics of such now-ancient figures as former New York gov ernor Nelson Rockefeller and Mitt Romney’s father and former Michigan gov ernor George Romney. No one in the public discourse even mentions these two anymore.Largely forgotten with them are the politics of Republican moderation. Why? For starters, you simply can’t get elected that way now. Look at what hap pened to Liz Cheney in her Wyoming primary election earlier this month. She got swamped by 113,000 votes to 49,000 in a state that has been almost a political fief dom of her family for over fifty years. The report seeks “urgent attention” from the UN and the world community to rights violations in Bei jing’s campaign to root out terrorism.UNhuman rights chief Michelle Bachelet, facing pressure on both sides, brushed aside multiple Chi nese calls for her office to withhold the report, which follows her own, muchcriticised trip to Xinjiang in May. Choice between false and true religion
The collect or prayer for Sunday past speaks of our desire for God to “increase in us true religion.” We talk about being sincere rather than hypocritical, to have an authentic faith and not merely offering lip service to God. Let us explore what the differences are. In Jeremiah 2:5, 7-8,11-13 we are given a clear picture of the “Thuscontrast:says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me and went after worthless things and became worthless themselves?... But when you entered you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, “Where is the Lord?” Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do notHasprofit…anation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked; be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the foun tain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.” What they should have been doing was worship ping God with inexpressible gratitude:“They did not say, “Where is the Lord, who brought us up from the land of whoEgypt, led us in the wilder ness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?” I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things.” In Psalm 81: 1, 10, the Psalmist sets the tone of our understanding of true reli gion and speaks on behalf of God: “Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob”… I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

CHOICE BETWEEN FALSE AND TRUE RELI ION FROM PAGE 11 ST AMBROSE AN LICAN CHURCH HOSTS BACK TO SCHOOL SUNDAY
BISHOP Patrick L Wooden calls the song 'Church Girl' blasphe mous.
CECE
On Sunday, August 28, the Church of St Ambrose was a beehive of activity, with droves of students decked out in their new nicely pressed school uniforms. The rector, Father Chester Burton, and his assistant priest, Archdeacon James Palacious were able to sit back and relax as the young sters whose task it was to pontificate, challenged their fellow students on the upcoming school year. During the 9am Eucharistic Celebra tion, the congregation heard from various young people, the Parish's Sunday School Superintendent Leja Burrows and present Primary School Principal Cozetta John son, who encouraged the kids to excel this new school semester. The speakers emphasised some requirements that would be useful for all school-aged individuals. Firstly, students should be prepared for every school day carrying the necessary tools – pens, pen cils, books and required items for the regular school. Secondly, they should keep the necessary handouts, papers and assignments in separate folders. Thirdly, the students should be willing to work hard and give it their all. Fourthly, they were encouraged to ask questions when they don't understand something. Fifthly, they should complete all homework assign ments to garner exceptional grades that will help them obtain a good GPA at the end of the term. And finally, they should be responsible and conscientious in asking about any assignment they missed while out sick or unable to attend school. Students, the speakers said, should foster healthy lifestyles in terms of eating a healthy breakfast and a balanced lunch. They were told to be respectful to the prin cipal, administrative staff and homeroom teachers and support staff, maintaining a positive attitude every single day. The youngsters were also told that the most important tool is putting God first in all things, as the old Sunday School song states, "Read your Bible and pray every day and you will grow.”

However, Clark sisters Twinkie and Dorinda both spoke out in Beyoncé’s defence.“Y’all leave Beyoncé alone. Leave her alone. As long as she got something in there, that’s all right. Amen,” said Dorinda in a sermon, while Twinkie took to social media to send a thank you to Beyoncé for using the sample. “There is a line in a song I wrote that Beyoncé included in her new song ‘Church Girl’ that says centre of thy will. That means I want to be in the will of God. Thanks, Beyoncé, for listening to my music, and I hope it blesses your soul,” said Twinkie. R&B singer Tank also came to Beyoncé’s defence. In a video he posted, he started off with the Bible verse Roman’s 10:9-10 which says “thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”“Who are you, you Pastor, to question the sal vation of Beyoncé? Who gives you the authority and that right to question what she believes, what she has confessed with her mouth and what she believes in her heart because of a song. It seems as if you don’t know or haven’t been told that twerking is not only in the streets. Church girls twerk. I am just trying to make you understand that what ever world you are living in that seems to be above us, it’s not a real one of judg ment that you have casted, assuming that this woman has sold her soul to the devil, immediately con demning her to hell. Where did you find this position, who gave you God’s posi tion,” said Tank in the video.Gospel singer Deitrick Haddon added: “Let Beyoncé make her song for her audience and you make your gospel song for your audience. Then mind your own business and let God be God. If you have a problem or a concern about Beyoncé, just pray for her strength.”Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Lawson, reposted Deitrick’s message on Instagram, saying he had some words “for the hypocrites, the selfrighteous, the fake holy”.

IS WITH NEW SON ‘CHURCH IRL’
Beyoncé always makes headlines when she drops a new album; there is always praise and criticism in equal measure, it seems. Last month, she released her seventh studio album, a dance, disco and house music influenced album calledAndRenaissance.whilemost people are simply working out to the tracks, dancing at home or in the club, or simply bopping to the music in their cars, one song has grabbed the attention of Christians and faith leaders. The song is called “Church Girl”.Bishop Patrick L Wooden Sr, a prominent pastor of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in Raleigh, North Carolina, referred to the song quite bluntly as “a piece of trash.” “We are called to speak up. We are called to say something. Beyoncé just released sacrilege. The only (way) I can account for some of this stuff is some body done sold their soul to the devil. Now, all I can say to you is this: when you sell your soul to the devil, you get the short end of the stick. Because you’re not going to live but so long. And when you leave here, where you’re going, you’re going to be there forever. So, it’s not a good deal,” said Bishop Wooden. On the “Church Girl” track, Beyoncé sings: “I’ll drop it like a thotty, drop it like a thotty. I said, now pop it like a thotty, pop it like a thotty (you bad). Church girls actin’ loose, bad girls actin’ snotty (you bad).“Let it go, girl (let it go), let it out, girl (let it out). Twerk that a** like you came up out the South, girl (ooh, ooh). I said, now drop it like a thotty, drop it like a thotty (you bad). Bad girl actin’ naughty, church girl, don’t hurt nobody.” Bishop Wooden said he considered reading the lyrics out loud to the con gregation, but he struggled to listen to the song as the words were “too bad.” He said the new song is not for public consumption, and recommended that parents not let their kids listen to the song either.
WINANS
you with the finest of the heat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” In Luke 14:1, 7-14, Jesus teaches about the principle of humility and offers the illustration of not seat ing oneself in a place of honour at a banquet, only to be relocated when someone more important arrives. He also shares the lesson of gener osity to those who cannot repay. These sentiments are captured in the complete Collect mentioned ear lier: “Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts , the love of Your Name; increase in us true religion, nourish us with all good ness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.” If you still are not sure of the definition of true religion, consider this passage from the letter to the Hebrews, chapter 13 verses 1-8 and 15-16, titled “Service Well-Pleas ing to God: “Let mutual affection continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them, those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he himself has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?’ Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; con sider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever... Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”As you meditate on these pas sages, ask yourself questions about your position on all of these topics, examining your conscience to see where you need to pray for an increase in true religion.
BEYONC BLASPHEMIN
On “Church Girl”, Beyoncé samples the song “Centre of Thy Will” by the gospel group The Clark Sis ters, which is made of five siblings.“It’sthe worst. And to sample the song of a real church lady, Twinkie Clark. I don’t know whether she (Twinkie) knew what she (Beyoncé) was going to do with the song or not, but she knows she’s not saved. I don’t talk about anything that’s not public; anything that is public is fair game,” said Bishop Wooden. “I pray to God that a stiff denunciation of what she did with that song is put out. It shows that we are not speaking up. Don’t nobody respect the church, the world don’t respect the church. What’s sad is this, there will be church people who will defend it. Let me tell you something I am not bothered by those who defend that kind of garbage, I am bothered by those who say nothing.”

Aguero previously held the record for most goals in a player’s first five Premier League appearances, with eight along with former Coventry striker Mick Quinn (from the early 1990s).
