ThatSPLITGirlLay Lay (Alaya High) Karin says: “It’s a cute, age-appropriate look for the 15-year-old rapper. I love that’s it a two-piece jacket and shorts combo. Too many young girls want to wear grown-up sexy gowns. What I don’t love, however, is the Christian Dior oblique all over the outfit. Can we stop looking like walking ads for luxury brands?”
Cara says: “This outfit is super super cute young and fresh. I know its a bit on the casual side. But I think for an award show like the VMAs it works. I was pleasantly surprised by her choice. The hair is fun as well.”
TaylorSPLITSwift Karin says: “I know the Swifties loved this look, but it’s not quite working for me. It’s a cute take on the 1920’s flapper dress, only with crystal chains. But for all it’s slightly provocative peek-a-boo bits, I somehow find it a bit boring. Maybe because we’ve seen so many similar dresses.” Cara says: “This dress is super cute and very much Taylor. I actually thinks it marries her country girl and pop singer sides pretty well. I like that she went for a more burgundy hued lip instead of her usual red. And those shoes are absolutely stunning.” MTV Video Music Awards

Karin says: “At first, I hated it. Then I saw it as nod to the great Missy Elliot’s ‘The Rain’ look. And now I kinda like it. Sure, it’s giving parachute or Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but I like the drama of this ridiculous Jean Paul Gaultier gown. She sure got everyone talking about her.”
ChloeHIT Bailey Karin says: “It’s a pretty dress. I love the futuristic Android vibe the silver corset is giving. She looks like she is ready to go into a sci-fi battle. And while it’s sexy, it’s not tacky. I just wish she didn’t always look so uncomfortable and unsure of herself.”
Cara says: “I love Lizzo and her style choices are usually a hit for me, but this outfit just screams Hefty garbage bag to me. I love her hair and her makeup is on point, and I do get the drama of it all, but garbage bag all I can see, sorry.”
Cara says: “This is cute. It’s a pretty simple silhouette, but has just enough bling to make it special. I also really like the way this fits her. It’s sexy but the ‘girls’ don’t look like they’re in danger of popping out and the split isn’t obscene. I think it works for her.”
LizzoSPLIT
LilHITNas X Karin says: “Step aside, Lizzo, here comes real drama on the red carpet. This feathered and hoop-skirted ensemble is a sure attention-grabber. This isn’t even fashion anymore, but art. And apparently it’s environmentally friendly as well, having been made using upcycled materials and 100-year-old upholstery fabric from an Italian villa.”
Cara says: “My first thought was, ‘This is what it looks like when a peacock decides to embrace his African heritage.’ He was obviously going for the statement look and he achieved it. And let’s be real, we could all use a little feathered drama in our life now and then.”

The sense of smell is of one of our most powerful senses. Scents can evoke memories, relieve stress and mentally stimulate. Following the pattern of the popu lar paint and sip parties, Lateasha Saunders is creating a space where Bahamians are given the opportunity to create their very own fragrances. She does this with her mobile Scentsy Aroma Bar, which allows customers to build mix their own perfumes, from the top/head notes to middle/heart notes, and the base notes. And Lateasha is using her aca demic background to create this experience.“Thisidea (came from) my love for the sciences. I have earned a Bachelor of Biology and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering,” she told Tribune Weekend. “I was always interested in creating my own cosmetic line or creating a product that could be both impactful and novel.”Through extensive research, she came across an article referencing the olfactory bulb (the brain’s smell receptor), and it’s importance to memory, behaviour and mood. “I then immediately thought ‘per fumery’,” she said. Launched just last month, her aroma bar is already a success. “Our bottom (base) notes were created by the Scentsy Aroma Bar through months of experimental processes. Hence, this cannot be replicated. At Scentsy, our patrons choose a base note (based on their scent personality), scents such as woodsy, floral, fresh, and edible. They then have the opportunity to top off that fragrance with two addi tional scents. Their mixture is mixed, bottled and capped. They have the opportunity to name their fragrance and label it,” she said. Her personal favourite fragrance is called ‘La’Felle’, which contains floral and edible notes. In these uncertain times, Lateasha said it is important for Bahamians to create their own unique revenue streams.“Itisimperative to launch busi nesses similar to mine in the Bahamas because the cost of living and operating a business is extremely high. A mobile bar equals low over head cost,” she said.

04 | The Tribune | Weekend Friday, September 2, 2022
Adrianna Munnings believes there is a message in every song and a song in everyAndmessage.assomeone who has been a singer-songwriter for many years, she is passionate about sending messages of hope and strength through her music. She has also found the message of peace in praise music following several traumatic and painful experiences.
From sharing a stage with Michael Jackson and CeCe Winans, to making it through several preliminary rounds of the hit show “The Voice”, this artist has vast experience of the entertainment industry. She tells Cara Hunt about her highs and lows, her tragic losses and what the future holds for her. A few hints: children’s books and pancakes are involved.
Adrianna had two sisters who died and left young children behind. The singer is now helping raise theseShekids.told Tribune Weekend that worship music has been the balm to help heal her soul in the aftermath of such devastating losses. “The music tells me that I can rise up despite eve rything and He lives in me,” she said.
Adrianna was born in the settlement of Mastic Point, Andros, where she and her cousin grew up singing the songs of gospel artists like Bebe and CeCe Winans while they washed the dishes.
“My grandmother would tell my cousin Tina that these girls would one day be stars,” she said. It was a prediction that came true. Adrianna has had quite the musical career – winning multiple inter national awards such as Prayze Factor Awards and even making it past several preliminary rounds of the hit NBC singing competition show “The Voice”.

He downloads an idea in my head and I just turn that into a song. I remember there was one day that I wrote five songs in a single day,” she said. And another way she is spreading positive mes sages is through the children’s book she is writing. “It will be a book telling then how special they are. I want the girls to know that they are beautiful and the boys to know that they are handsome, and that they have great attributes that make them the great person that they are.” She had had the idea for the book for a while, but as often happens in life, it was placed on the back burner until now. “I want to do a CD soundtrack to go along with it and it will feature Bahamian characters so that the children can recognise themselves in it,” she added.
• In 1886, the famous Apache leader and shaman (“the one who yawns”) surrenders to surrenders to US government troops. He was the last Native American warrior to formally give in to US forces. His surrender signalled the end of the Indian Wars in the Southwest.
• In 1666, at 2am, the Great Fire of London begins in a bakery on Pudding Lane. Firefighting efforts are critically delayed due to the indecisiveness of the Lord Mayor, Sir Thomas Bloodworth, to demolish the nearby burning buildings to stop the flames from spreading. The four-day firestorm destroys 80 percent of the medieval city, including 13,200 houses and 87 out of 109 churches, leaving 100,000 people homeless.

The first casualty was the British ocean liner Athenia, which was sunk by a German U-30 submarine that had assumed the ship was armed.
Additionally, Adrianna has launched a business called Annie Fanny Gourmet Pancakes. She explained that she got the idea from working for a family with two children.
“I have been singing in the church since I was about six or seven,” she said. “In school I was always writing little songs and poems.” Her soulful voice resonated with everyone who heard her and her singing career took off. She was one of the Bahamian singers who performed for the opening of the Atlantis resort, sharing the stage with Michael Jackson, Bebe and CeCe Winans. In 2009, she was the first female runner-up in Bahamian Idol produced by Cedric Munnings. She was the winner at Fam Fest 2014 after a sing-off. She also won a contest named Island Star produced by Akeem Hanchell. She has participated in a number of other song competitions and has won some of them, including national song competitions. She has hosted successful events of her own under the banner of ‘Adrianna Munnings and Friends’. And she has written and recorded several songs, including “Sweet Love, Pure Love, True Love”, “Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams” and “Smile Awhile”. Speaking about her time on “The Voice”, she said: “I didn’t make the final rounds, but I am so grateful for the experience.” Adrianna said her music style is very versatile and can’t really be pinned down. “I would say my style is like an Anita Baker; jazz, urban and soul-inspired. I am influenced by the old school artists, BeBe and CeCe, Whitney, Tamela Mann.”Adrianna also started writing her own songs about 20 years ago. She said the inspiration comes from personal experience and messages that the Lord sends“Sometimesher.

Sudoku is a number-placing puzzle based on a 9x9 grid with several given numbers. The object is to place the numbers 1 to 9 in the empty squares so the each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains the same number only once. The difficulty level of the Conceptis Sudoku increases from Monday to Sunday Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. Pantone’s Mykonos Blue, named after the picturesque Greek island, is another big winner this season. It’s OK to have fall blues as long as they the kind that include this fabulous shade. Mykonos Blue pairs really well with cognac browns. Think a cute blue dress and then brown accessories, or again, use a handbag in blue for your pop of colour Royal purple is always fabulous and this season be sure to dress like the autumnal princess you are. A velvet purple jacket with jeans and killer heels ,yes please! Or go preppy with a purple sweater and plaid skirt. Fuchsia is another great way to brighten up your fall look. It’s pretty but doesn’t have the sweetness of pastel pink which is more suitable to springtime. Items to look out for and add to your wardrobe include some fuchsia ballet flats or a fuchsia and black jacket. And while red is a staple colour in your winter/ Christmas wardrobe, it can also be a great choice for fall. There are so many red colour combos you can try. We really like the idea of red paired with tan and red plaid with a checkered print, or find your wild side with a red animal print.
And while our local climate may not allow for the classics like thigh-high boots, sweater dresses and leather jackets, Bahamians fashionistas can still tap into one of the season’s hottest fall trends: bold colours. This year’s fashion designers are leaving the browns and beiges behind and are embracing a wide array of bright hues. Because who said that fall always has to be dreary?
Teal is that pop of colour that you may not have known your wardrobe needed, but trust us, it does. Grab some teal jeans or a teal jacket to give your basic ensemble a bright boost.

Lime green is another colour that you may not think to include with your fall staples, but a cute lime sweater paired with jeans, or a lime green handbag to wear with an all-black outfit can be a great way to spice up your look.

You know that boring strip of grass — or weeds — between the street and the sidewalk that techni cally belongs to your city or town but whose care ultimately falls to you?
If you share the strip with a neigh bor, have a conversation to make sure they’re OK with your plan. With the authorities and neighbors on board, give careful thought to plant selection. Opt for tough, lowmaintenance, drought-tolerant plants, preferably native to your region, that will thrive in the likely hot, dry conditions of the strip. And be sure to select plants suited for the amount of sunlight they’ll receive there.

Avoid planting edibles, which could become tainted by car emissions, road salts and other pollutants. Also don’t plant large trees, which over time might interfere with overhead utility lines, and whose roots could disrupt sidewalks. Thorny plants should be avoided,Considertoo.how high plants will be at maturity, especially if the strip is on a corner; blocking the view of drivers or pedestrians could create unsafe conditions. The width of plants mat ters, too: Avoid those that will grow to block the sidewalk.
It goes by many names: median, verge, tree belt, boulevard, parkway, utility strip, parking strip — and my favourite, the hell strip, which best describes the growing conditions there.

As for design, you are limited only by your taste and imagination. Select styles and colors that complement your home, fence or other plants growing in your garden. Fill the entire bed with low, mounded plants and groundcovers or use low-growing plants on the ends of the strip and taller ones in the center. Incorporate ornamental grasses or sow wildflower seeds.Toprepare the long-ignored strip, clear away grass and weeds, and turn the soil over. Mix in a generous help ing of compost to improve drainage, water retention and soil nutrition. Then plant your selections, observing the spacing recommendations on their tags.Consider installing a simple barrier, such as one made of stakes and twine, around the perimeter of the strip to protect it from trampling by pas sersby. And keep the bed well weeded until plants fill in. Even drought-tolerant plants will need to be watered regularly through out their first growing season to ensure they develop a deep, vigorous root system. Going forward, they may require some additional watering, particularly during hot, dry spells. Proximity to a garden hose would be ideal, but because hell strips tend to be small, a few trips with a watering can may suffice. With relatively little effort, your little hell strip garden will improve the view of -- and from -- your home. It might even increase its value.

Literary lives – Nathanael West
satireofmasterAdark
WEST’s best known work, his dark Hollywood satire, The Day of the Locust, was turned into a film starring Donald Sutherland in 1975
“West was no model student – arriving, as he did, dripping with a dose of gonorrhoea, the effects of which embarrassed him for life in relations with women. At Brown he formed the most important relationship of his literary life with fellow under graduate SJ Perelman – later in life the Marx Brothers’ script writer.”

Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the American author and scriptwriter who wrote two darkly satirical novels about the US newspaper and film industries.
(1903-1940)
“Only those who still have hope can benefit from tears. When they finish, they feel better. But to those without hope, whose anguish is basic and permanent, no good comes from crying. Nothing changes for them. They usually know this, but still can’t help crying.”
Nathanael West was born Nathan Weinstein on October 17, 1903, in New York City of Ashkenazi Jewish parents from Kovno, Russia (present day Lithuania) who maintained an upper middle-class household in the Upper West Side.
Nathan’s father was a builder who arrived in New York in the late 1890s. West dropped out of high school and only gained admission to Tufts College by forging his high school transcript. Expelled from Tufts after two terms, he falsi fied his academic records to transfer to Brown University.

He avoided the realist fiction of American contemporary writers, instead hungrily reading French surrealists, and British and Irish poets of the 1890s – particularly

WEST’s Miss Lonelyhearts was made into a movie three times and inspired a character in Hitchcock’s thriller Rear Window
• Sir Christopher Ondaatje is the author of The Last Colonial. He acknowledges that he has quoted liberally from Wikipedia; Nathaneal West: The Art of His Life (1970) by Jay Martin; Lonely Hearts: The Screwball World of Nathaneal West and Eileen McKenney (2010) by Marion Meade; and Lives of the Novelists (2011) by John Sutherland.
“Art is a way out. Do not let life overwhelm you. When the old paths are choked with debris of failure, look for newer and fresher paths. Art is just such a path. Art is distilled from suffering.”
In 1939, he was hired by RKO Radio Pictures to write more screenplays. “... I talk like a man in a book. I not only talk, but feel like one. I have spent my life in books; literature has deeply dyed my brain its own colour. This literary colouring is a protective one – like the brown of the rabbit or the checks of the quail –making it impossible for me to tell where literature ends and I begin.”
In 1933, West changed jobs and became manager of the Sutton Hotel in New York City, and the same year bought a farm in eastern Pennsylvania – but soon got a job as a contract scriptwriter for Columbia Pictures, then run by the ruthless film mogul Harry Cohn, and moved to Hollywood. In Hollywood writing screenplays for B movies suited West. He had time to finish a third novel A Cool Million (1934), and started working on The Day of the Locust (1939), glean ing material from his experiences living in a hotel on Hollywood Boulevard and writing about the seamy lower end of the Hollywood “Dream Factory”. It was his first novel and presented a scathing look at the film industry.

The novel was well received but sold little.
West’s reputation grew in the years after his death. Miss Lonelyhearts (1933) was made into a film in 1933, 1958, and 1983, and the Hitchcock character in Rear Window has parallels to West’s writings. The Day of the Locust (1939) saw production in film in 1975 starring Donald Sutherland and Karen Black.
On December 22, 1940, West and his wife Eileen McKenney were returning to Los Angeles from a hunting trip to Mexico. West ran through a stop sign in El Centro, California, resulting in a collision in which he and his newly-married wife were killed. They died the day after their friend Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack. West was 37 years Nathanaelold.

Oscar Wilde. He seemed most interested in strange content and strange and unusual literary style. He was always intent on becoming a writer and for years worked on a novel The Dream Life of Balso Snell (1930) – a satire on human delusion.Hisfather wanted West to join him in the family construction business. Instead, West convinced him to pay for a trip to Paris – where he disappeared for three months into “the Lost Generation”. It was in Paris that he changed his name from Nathan Weinstein to Nathanael West. On returning to New York, he found work as the night manager of the Hotel Kenmore Hall on East 23rd Street in Manhattan. This laid-back job suited him – even though he did not have the slightest interest in the hotel business. It gave him time for his writing. His friend SJ Perel man introduced him to a woman who wrote an “agony” column for a Brooklyn newspaper, who showed him a number of “agony” letters she had received. This gave West the idea for Miss Lonelyhearts. He published his first short story in 1929 – the year of the New York stock-market crash that caused the Great Depression, taking the Weinstein family property business down with manyWestothers.continued with his theme, his hotel job giving him time to put his eventual novel Miss Lonelyhearts (1933) together. An Expression ist black comedy set in New York City during the Great Depression, it tells the story of a male newspaper advice columnist who provides advice to lonesome people and becomes so affected by their desperate letters that he spirals into depres sion, drinking and ill-considered sexual affairs, which leads to his downfall.

Travelling to Mangrove Cay on a Bahamian sloop was “an adventure”; arriv ing was an even greater experience:“Iwaded ashore through the warm water… a man came out of the palm trees, wearing old shorts and no shirt. He was tall, powerfully built, sunburned and…past sixty, but his muscles were as hard as those of a 20-yearold athlete. “ ‘Cavill’s my name. I got your letter a few months ago but didn’t worry to answer it.’”Since Elgin Forsyth was in Nassau, Percy Cavill invited Cottman to stay with him on Madeira Cay (in Middle Bight, between Mangrove Cay and Big Wood Cay). “Cavill’s sailboat was anchored just off the beach…and, while we sailed, he began to tell me about himself. He was born in Sydney, Australia, where his father owned a bathing beach… as a boy, his job was to dive under his father’s dock and, bare-handed, clean out the octopi that lived there. If he didn’t get them all, his father beat him…at 16, he stowed away on a ship, bound for San Francisco, where he dived overboard and swam ashore “It took us about two hours to reach Cavill’s cay… we anchored and waded ashore…a path wound up a hill, with a maze of scrubby bushes. At the top was a clearing, with a pathetic little garden…a small yard, littered with a fantastic col lection of odds and ends… beyond this was a house (exactly five feet wide and twenty-one feet long)…walls of clapboard…roof thatched with palm fronds. Cavill pushed the door open and a large black hen rushed out, between his legs, followed by a rooster. The inside was, if possible, more disorderly than the outside…
Cavill’s bed was an ancient affair, with a high iron head board…underneath was the hen’s nest (the neatest thing in the room). We turned in early…every exposed part of my body was covered with something that felt like sparks. ‘Sandflies,’ saidHeCavill.”builta small fire in a tin contraption, smothered it with leaves, until it gave off a dense acrid smoke, which got rid of the sandflies, but burned Cottman’s eyes.

Quickly, I realised that this was not the procedure. The skin was tough and bitter, and the juice ran over my hands, instead of into my mouth. I took a knife and tried to cut through it, to eat from the inside out. There was a seed in the middle and the seed and the fruit refused to part company. Meanwhile, the juice was flowing, in small rivers, down my chin, hands and arms. It seemed impossi ble that such a flood of juice could come from one fruit. I rushed into the bathroom and, standing in the tub, managed to eat most of the mango, though not before I was pretty well smeared with juice. It was delicious.” As any Bahamian kid could have told him, he dis covered that mangos should be eaten in the sea. Cottman was an American schoolteacher, in Indiana, where he dreamed of living on a tropical or sub-tropical, island.In1939, he wrote to Herman Pyfrom, commis sioner at Long Cay/Fortune Island, to my mother’s cousin, LEW Forsyth, com missioner at Mangrove Cay, Andros, and to Percy Cavill, a famous Australian swim mer who lived on a small island near Mangrove Cay. Later that year, he set off to visit Forsyth and Pyfrom.
RAF Group Captain Lionel Wilmot Brabazon Rees, VC, OBE, MC, AIC (1884-1955), a Welshman who had sailed across the Atlantic, alone in his 29-foot yacht, was living on that yacht at Mastic Cay, about four miles away. Rees’ boat gave a new meaning to the word ‘shipshape’. Rees had a place for everything, and everything was in its place. He invited Cavill and Cott man to dinner, served with Sterling silver cutlery, each piece bearing the Rees coat-of-arms.Cottmandescribed his visit as “a strange and wonderful thing that could happen only in a strange and wonder ful country” – the country that became his home and inspired his book Out-Island Doctor.

Animal matters Kim Aranha
As I sit at my desk to write this article, I find it difficult to decide which emotion is the dominant one I am experiencing: I am saddened, I am angry, I am disgusted and I am disap pointed.LastFriday a man was attacked, and killed by dogs. DOGS! Man’s best friend! What a terrible tragedy. I cannot begin to imagine what his final moments on earth must have been like. I cannot venture down thatThepath.dogs? I am still trying to find out more about them. I saw a news clip that showed two dogs - one a potcake in need of a bath and an other a much smaller dog (perhaps a puppy). Do we know, de facto, if they are the actual dogs? Were there any witnesses? I saw no blood on the two dogs. Are we sure that this was not an attack by other dogs? Even a set-up by dogs being toughened up and taught to attack? The victim was a homeless man; was he a target? Could this have been intentional? I am tremendously angry because back in February a lady, Mrs Bar ton, was viciously attacked by her neighbours’ three pit bulls and the whole country was all over the story, up in arms and distraught for a few minutes. This lady is still suffering from that attack physically and men tally, but the community dropped it. I wonder if she has been awarded damages? I doubt she has received much and the owners got a slap on the wrist. I am disgusted because I said this

“OK, so I have a slightly goofy name, especially as I’m neither a ghost nor a large ursine mam mal (bear), but I have lots of love to give and lots of puppy energy to share with you. I’m BooBear and I’m about six months old. I’m one of many puppies and dogs available for adop tion at the Bahamas Humane Society. Have you been looking for a faithful companion, a trusty guard dog, a playful pet? I’m sure there’s someone here to fit whichever you’re seeking. I’ll be both a faithful companion and playful pet. Come on in to meet me or call 323-5138 for more information. I look forward to meeting you soon!”

Now comes the classic knee jerk reaction: a flurry of statements and meetings, TV shows and radio; 14 days of notoriety and then what? We will no doubt brush this one under the carpet and turn our interest to yet another murder or boat capsis ing. What is needed here is continuity and follow through. We need to do something concrete. The solutions are easily identified. The law has to be enforced, animals need to be contained, this insane breeding has to stop, and spay and neuter needs to be the name of the game.Ifirmly believe with a strong and carefully planned spay and neuter programme, island-wide, for all the islands eventually, would be effective and the problem would be close to resolution in a space of perhaps five years. The Bahamas Humane Society, BAARK, the Bahamas Veterinary Board and the government need to work together and make this hap pen. Even if the Animal Protection and Control Board has started to meet amongst themselves, that is one to two hours a month. The board can give guidance, but it is going to take more that 24 hours a year to resolve thisBAARKissue. is doing their best, swamped with surgeries. BHS is doing its best, swamped with sur renders. The VMAB has vets doing everything they can to help, but the problem is bigger than us. We need support, reinforcement and assis tance.Back to the fatality last week. There are lots of questions to be an swered as to the circumstances and just how do we reassure the public that these are not just random dogs picked up and that we know that they are indeed the ones? Clarity, sunshine, openness is what we as Bahamians need at this point. I look forward to seeing more positive involvement from all sectors.

would happen again and I was right; it only took seven months to happen again, and worse. The circumstances last week were different. I am guessing nobody came to his defence; he probably lost a lot of blood. How long was he lying there before anybody saw him? How can we be sure we have the right dogs? What if the actual dogs are still at large? Did anybody see the attack? Why do we not know these details?Theinertia of our country when it comes to animals is sickening. I point no fingers. Government after government – red, yellow, it matters not which colour T-shirt they gave away, the dismissive attitude is the same. What matters is that nobody moves on anything that could change things….why? In my humble opin ion, it is because they just don’t care. I am hugely disappointed because we have the legislation - the Animal Protection and Control Act has been around for years - the board has been appointed, and appointed and appointed, but never meets. Sorry, let me correct that, we met once in 12 years. In the past two months some of us who were appointed (again) have chosen to meet of our own accord and try to move forward on guidelines and suggestions in order to make a difference. To say our efforts have been met by a lack of enthusiasm would be an under statement . This all could have been avoided; this horrific incident, the dreadful at tack on Mrs Barton and the others.

A 30-plus cadre of young women and even some young men took part in the free two-week summer sewing camp. It was the first of its kind, but follow ing the camp’s success, it will not be the last.
Mrs Turnquest had a team to assist her, which was comprised of Carolie Grant, Bobbi Adder ley, Sherelle Moncur, Agnes Saunders, Carol Roach, Alma Adderley, and the kitchen crew who ensured that the participants had a hot lunch every day before heading home. The chefs on duty were Jessie Mackey, Joycelynn Munroe and Hyacinth Curtis.
Members of the ACW were able to impart prac tical knowledge and hands-on skills such as the basic stitch, running stitch, overcast stitch, back stitch and hemming fabric for future assignments if their school uniforms needs any hemming. With all this wealth of knowledge under their belt, the campers were able to cut out a piece of fabric and construct a pin cushion. They then subsequently moved on to making clothes for dolls, and finally an apron to don when they are in the kitchen assisting their mothers. As in their academic pur suits, some of the students caught on very quickly and those who were proficient in sewing assisted those who lagged behind.
Youngsters learn basic skills at first successful sewing summer camp
Child psychologists recommend sewing as a wholesome and beneficial activity for kids as it can help build self-confidence and be a great outlet for creativity.Inaddition to learning about practical uses like sewing on a button, fixing a loose thread or even making a handmade gift for a loved one, the activ ity helps hone kids’ fine motor skills, teaches them patience and how to follow instructions.

Most kids today are able to download and navigate every digital app or computer game that comes their way. Some even know how to edit and upload their own videos to platforms like YouTube and TikTok. But as children become more and more absorbed by the internet, and parents rush around just to balance life and work, some vital skills no longer get passed down and learned by the youngerSewinggenerations.isonesuch skill that has become a bit of a dying art. But not if the Anglican Church Women (ACW) of St Ambrose Anglican Church have anything to say about it. Even though the summer vacation time was drawing to a close, they were determined to host their sewing camp before kids returned to school. And so they hosted their unique camp for the school-aged children of the parish. ACW President Rochelle Turnquest, a former banking executive, shared her idea for the camp with her rector, Fr Chester Burton, and he let run with the idea.In this computer-dependent generation many young mothers have neglected to teach their children basic life skills such as hemming, basting or embroidery. But Mrs Turnquest, who hails from Long Island, knows the importance of sewing for her siblings and family members.
