Mr Hart said: “I won dered which Shavez they meant because it couldn’t be my Shavez they were talking about. But then sure enough it turned out to be him; his lifeless body was on the ground just covered up.”Although Mr Hart was not there when his son was fatally shot, he said some people who were there told him his son was breaking up a fight and protecting one of his former classmates from high school. “Other people who were there were saying that this argument did not start with my son. It started with somebody else who Shavez recognised because they went to school with him at St George’s. These fellas wanted to beat on the guy, but Shavez intervened. “He was like the peace maker, but by intervening my son met his death,” Mr Hart said as he held back tears.During the interview, Mr Hart said his son was someone who loved to give back despite facing his own challenges.Thefather explained that the star athlete was prom ised a job in the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Cul ture however, the job never came through. But that did not stop Shavez from volunteering his time to the local kids in the community. Mr Hart added: “He was very active in the commu nity. He came home and gave back to the commu nity by training the local kids and organising a bas ketball camp for them.” He said Shavez did eve rything in his power to freely devote his services to empowering the youth through sports. When asked what kind of person Shavez was, Mr Hart described him as being “humble”, “introverted”, and someone who loved to laugh.“He was not a show-off, if someone didn’t tell you that was Shavez you could pass him by,” Mr Hart said. “He didn’t boast about any of his achievements. He’s seen all over the world a couple of times and never bragged. He never spoke down to his peers or friends; he just wasn’t that kind of person. He had many rings and gifts that people gave him that he chose not to wear just so he would be a regular boy.” The distraught father, reflecting on his son’s murder, said it seems this generation cannot reason without things becoming violent or causing someone’s life. But he urged young people to change their ways and to choose a life of pur pose rather than pain.

As for a breakdown on the demographics, the director indicated that women on treatment for HIV have more viral sup pression than men right now.“I think it’s about 80 percent of the women are virally suppressed, 82 percent. And the men are more at about 70 percent,” sheMeanwhile, said. Dr Forbes noted, thanks to support, no babies were born with HIV in The Bahamas in the years 2010, 2015, 2019, 2020, and 2021. There was zero percent HIV trans mission mother to baby in the last three years in the country.Hoarding, as it relates to medication, was identified as an issue in The Bahamas. Dr Forbes explained: “When I mentioned that we really need better partnerships to have one single patient profile, it’s very important, because if someone is coming in who’s living with HIV, and they’re using multiple names, for example.“They’re using three dif ferent names, and then going to three differ ent treatment sites and collecting three times the amount of medication. There can be hoarding in that way and that is some thing that we have noticed as we tried to have more accurate information and have confidential ways of ensuring that we have one patient profile, like using unique identifier numbers and other information. “That is something that we have found and there also can be, well, some of our providers collect medi cations and give it on behalf of the patient. And so there is the potential, for exam ple, if a patient doesn’t pick up medicines, there could be medicines sitting in the offices.”She emphasised offi cials have a very important responsibility to make cer tain that they have enough medications and how hoarding can make manag ing supplies difficult.

Mr Cooper apologised on behalf of the government for the long delay in recovery in East Grand Bahama over the past three years. “In the months after Dorian hit, we were extremely critical of the terrible job we thought was being done at recovery (during the Minnis admin istration). We believe there was neglect, ambivalence, and grand standing while action was very limited. And we were right. When we came to office, we found a tangle of bureaucracy that designed more inefficien cies. We are not here to reflect on the past, but to chart the way forward we must recognise where we come from. “I want to tell you frankly from my perspective as DPM, it is about the des tination ahead more so than the route travelled, so far. So, I start by taking accountability and apolo gising on behalf of the government of The Baha mas over the past three years for not having done more fast enough to help you to restore your lives. “And so today we bring all the players in the room and just so you know I tend to write what I say to you so I can be accountable to myself and to you.” He said the government is looking to make an imme diate impact in the area to restore police services, post office, local government administrator services, NIB services, and provision for schools for children in East End.He noted that the Cleve land Baptist Church in Freetown will be used to facilitate 30 students from K-3 to grade one by October, and students from grade two to nine will be placed at the high school in High Rock. Ms Moxey said residents of EGB have experienced tremendous loss and that the government supports them. “We feel your pain and we come here today to say we are standing with you. We want you to know you matter and we will put action behind our words. We are still grieving the loss of family and loved ones, and many homes need repairs, and many need assistance, and the road to recovery has been long. Real help is here,” she said. Mr Thompson, MP for East Grand Bahama, noted that residents in the area are emotionally and men tally scared because of Dorian.“Wemust be mindful of the psychological needs of the community in EGB and what they have gone through in the last three years and what they are going through. One of things we like is for Social Services and the churches to put in place a programme that is going to meet not just physical needs, but also mental, emotional, and psy chological needs of EGB,” heEastsaid. The Tall Pines MP added: “The Bahamas shared those global fast track strategies to end AIDS by the year 2030. The interim targets for the year 2025 includes identifying 95 per cent of people living with HIV, placing 95 percent of positively identified indi viduals on antiviral therapy, ensuring that 95 percent of those on therapy achieve undetectable viral loads indicative of treatment success.”Hegave the data during a press conference on Friday giving a situational update in regard to the fight against AIDS and HIV. Dr Nikkiah Forbes, director of the National HIV/AIDS and Infec tious Disease Programme, explained that the most current data collated will reflect the period to the end of 2021. The data shows that approximately 4,447 per sons were living with HIV at the end of 2021 and that means the HIV prevalence is estimated at 1.3 percent of the population at this time.Asked if new cases were reported last year, Dr Forbes answered: “So I can tell you what our most recent data is, and that is actually in the year 2019there were 133 new HIV infections. This is gener ally actually, there were no babies born with HIV in the year 2019 and this deferred in the year 2010. There were 285 new HIV cases.” She said health officials have seen remarkable pro gress in terms of a decline in the number of new infec tions. She said that the number of newly reported HIV diagnoses decreased by 53 percent in the years between 2010 and 2019. “AIDS deaths, that is something that we know is preventable, once people are on effective treatment, and are getting effective care, and that has also decreased by 40 percent, between the years 2010 and 2019. So we are seeing some progress,” she said. The milestone of diag nosing 94 percent of people who are living with HIV by official estimates was achieved in 2021. “Further to that 73 per cent of people living with HIV who know their status, were on treatment and that was a very high number, the highest numbers we’ve seen currently in our program ming. And of those persons who are on treatment 81 percent of persons have achieved viral suppression and that is also increasing,” Dr Forbes said.

TWENTY-SIX memo rial markers for the Hurricane Dorian victims who lost their lives in East End, Grand Bahama, were officially unveiled on Sat urday during memorial ceremonies held on the third anniversary of the storm. Seven markers, with name plaques of each victim, were erected in McLean’s Town; 17 in High Rock; and two in Freetown, representing the 26 victims who died in those settle ments on September 2, 2019 during the storm. Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, Minister for Grand Bahama Ginger Moxey, Minister of Social Services and Urban Devel opment Obie Wilchcombe, Minister of State for Housing Lisa Rahming, Alex Storr, chairman of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority, and East Grand Bahama MP Kwasi Thompson attended and laid wreaths in memory of the victims. Wreaths were also laid at the foot of the Jack Hayward Bridge for those victims who died in the ‘Over the Bridge’ commu nities and the Lady Lakes Subdivision.MrCooper said that the memorial landmarks erected in the settlements are a fitting tribute to the victims of East End. “Those are most fitting for our brothers and sisters we have lost. I thank the families, friends, and mem bers of the community for coming, but importantly, for allowing us to establish these memorials as land marks in memory of your fallen loved ones,” he said. “Today was extremely memorable for me; I was able to experience and feel your pain,” he said. “I want you to know that today is an unforgettable day for me, and I assure you that I will never forget you.” Mr Cooper, who had vis ited EGB right after Dorian, recalled: “What I saw was a very different place; I saw homes you lost and infra structure you relied on torn apart. I saw pictures of loved ones you were looking for. I heard story after story of despair and tragedy. “I was heartbroken by what I saw and heard and still by what I see and feel today. So, I can only begin to imagine what it is that you have gone through and still going through. “We have memorialised this occasion and we will continue to do so. But we wanted to come and tell you today that for us, this is not an exercise coming, laying a wreath, and erecting a memorial and going away until next year, we are here to give you our assurances that more will be done and quickly,” he vowed.

“So I can tell you that the number of people living with HIV on treatment has nearly doubled from 2012 to the end of 2021. We had about 1,043 persons on treatment, HIV treatment, in 2013. The treatment guidelines were a little dif ferent then and we moved to treating all persons with HIV infection regardless of their illness stage, or whether they were having symptoms. We were one of the first Caribbean coun tries to do that in 2015 and so the number of persons on treatment in 2021 was about 3,047.”

Growing up, you never thought that someone will actually shoot at a police officer in uniform. It’s hard to see that,” he Therefore, said. assembling a joint task force is necessary, Commissioner Fernander added.“Iwill move quickly to identify a firearms task force. Our task force unit will consist of those same agencies (law enforcement agencies). We have already identified two officers from all of those agencies who will be a part of this task force, including our US partners.”Healso said, “The office will be housed at police headquarters. We have already done our vetting with police offic ers. That office should be open between now and the second week in September.” The police chief added that the majority of the ille gal guns are coming from the United “FirearmsStates.continue to come into our country and get into the hands of crimi nals and eventually being used in the commission of offence,” he said. He also noted some improvements and restruc turing happening to the police intelligence unit, as he promised during the official handover ceremony at police headquarters on July 5. “We continue to upgrade and we continue to train. We have officers now and we have our US partners who (are) assisting with the training and we have to continue to step up our game,” he said. “I’m not happy to that level to brag about it, but we are doing an excellent job in terms of executing, because we are an intel ligent, driven police force and we had a lot of success based on our intel and we could only take it to another level,” he said. “We should be in a posi tion to say, based on who gets killed tonight - if we don’t pay attention - we almost could tell you who the next victim could be,” heHesaid.added that the Fire arms and Gang Units of the police force will become more active in the com munity and a stand-alone Domestic Violence Unit also will be Commissionerimplemented.

A MAN was shot and killed by police on Thursday when he produced a handgun and engaged the officers, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Shortly after 10pm on Thursday, police officers from Operation Ceasefire responded to information about people with illegal handguns on a property on Miami Street, between Cordeaux and Bal four Avenues, police said. Officers then recovered a handgun and some ammuni tion from the body, police said. This was the third fatal shooting involv ing a police officer this year. In January, a police officer shot and killed a Royal Bahamas Defence Force officer who allegedly “charged” at him and tried to disarm him. Last year, 21 police-involved shootings were recorded, of which 13 were fatal. The Tribune previously reported The Bahamas has one of the highest per capita rates of police involved killings in the world, with 11 recorded in 2017, 2018 and 2020. Two years ago, a backlog of Coroner’s Court inquests into police involved shootings caused concern. The hearings were initially delayed because of COVID-19 in 2020. Later, former Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez was sworn in as a Supreme Court justice, causing further delays as officials waited to replace her.

programme on Jones Com munication Network with host Dr Godfrey Eneas. “We are not in the busi ness of no warning shots,” the police chief said. “If your officers’ lives are in danger, or any civilians (are in danger), they have the right to do what they have to “Ifdo. an individual pulls a weapon on you, you can’t wait for them to (shoot).

Currently, Magistrate Kara TurnquestDeveaux is the acting coroner, as of September 2021. Meanwhile, investigations into Thursday’s incident are being led by the acting coroner and are continuing.

“According to informa tion received from the family of the long-time employee at the embassy, the incident took place around 6am 1 September 2022 in the employee’s neighbourhood. The matter has been reported to the police in Haiti and is being investigated,” the release read.“Our prayers are with the victim and family for a safe and speedy return. We will assist the authorities to the extent that we can. We are advised that the diplomatic staff generally are not at risk. However, additional security measures are being taken.“The embassy will con tinue to monitor this situation along with the general security situation in the Port-au-Prince area, and advise the ministry accord ingly on recommended courses of action to take,” officials said. Mr Henfield told The Tribune yesterday that he was also assured that it was a local staff member, a Haitian national, who was kidnapped — not a Bahamian. He said it was not directly associ ated with anything with the embassy — describing it as “something exter nal”. However, he added, that in any event, it is “disconcerting”.“Itissomething to keep an eye on. That should con cern us in The Bahamas because kidnappings and criminal enterprise are far too frequent and rampant in Haiti which I view per sonally as a failed state,” Mr Henfield said. “It’s also our view in the opposition that the inter national community must make a more concerted effort to bring some kind of resolution to what’s going on in Haiti. The Bahamas alone cannot do it. There must be more urgency from the international com munity in response to the challenges that the Haitian people are facing because we feel the brunt of it, par ticularly the region feels it generally, and so for The Bahamas it’s an urgent matter in my view.” Asked if it is time for the embassy to bring Bahamian workers home, the former minister answered: “While I was in office as foreign minister, we had occasion to bring Bahamian staff back to The Bahamas more than once when things got a little out of order in Haiti. Then it became a little violent and criminality ruled the day.“I know the ministry is well disposed and capable of determining when people ought to return home, but I emphasise that there should be a short notice to move to repatriate Bahamians home if things get to that point where the embassy staff from The Bahamas in Haiti determined that they are unsafe. That’s normally the rule of thumb how I judged it - how we judged it in our administration.”Hearguedthat he did not believe that the Haitian authorities, whatever “sem blance of that authority is left in place”, have the abil ity to control or deal with these criminal enterprises that seem to act with impu nity. He again stressed that the international commu nity must begin to look at Haiti with a little bit more urgency so “we can begin to look at bringing some reso lution to the issues”. As for if there was more the Davis administration could have done to protect the worker, Mr Henfield answered that is something he would not put at the “foot of the government”. “These things happen all over the world. We rely mainly — when I was a part of the administration that was in office — on the information received from the embassy staff. They had a mission, the chief of mis sion, to see whether or not they felt safe or unsafe. And as soon as they signalled that they feel unsafe, they will be returned home.”

THE Ministry of Educa tion is facing a dire need of new teachers for growing classrooms. Our learning institutions are lacking the experience necessary to propel our students into the next level of tertiary discipline after graduation. Technical, trade and work experience is an essential element of training pro grammes when mentoring students. Most university graduates and professionals already possess the neces sary skills required for this undertaking to enhance stu dents logical and analytical thinking qualities they acquire.Myproposition to the ministry of education is simply to recruit those qualified impressions that are already in the work environment and are knowledgable about sub ject matters and literacy which correlates to career choices. Social education interaction will prove that qualified professionals are the best teachers for learn ing forums. I myself was a candidate for the minis try of education but took another appointment with the ministry of finance. Our government min istries are filled with such professional personalities that are willing to volunteer scheduled teaching partici pation on the same salary base for this invaluable ser vice. Subjects and courses are taught in higher tertiary institutions by working accountants, engineers, Bankers, computer science majors, doctors, lawyers, and culinary chefs not to mention our world class athletes, these attributes are key beneficial factors in career choices and are able to expand learning capabili ties beyond the classroom.

THE end of the AIDS epidemic is in sight? That’s what Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Michael Darville pro claimed at a press conference on Friday. It’s an eye-catching thing to say, but does it stand up to closer scrutiny? Well, a little bit of yes and a little bit of no. Certainly, the latest figures on the fight against HIV/AIDS are promis ing. Perhaps the most remarkable is the reduction in deaths from AIDS – down by 40 percent between 2010 and 2019. How does that figure come about? That’s where the other numbers come in. Reportedly, 95 percent of people living with HIV in The Bahamas now know their HIV status. Those free events you see in The Tribune from time to time with health workers offering tests so people can find out their status? Each of those pays off in helping people to learn whether they do or do not have HIV.Once people know, then action can be taken – precautionary to prevent the spread of the infection, and in terms of treatment.Infectious disease expert Dr Nikkiah Forbes said: “I can tell you that the number of people living with HIV on treatment has nearly doubled from 2012 to the end of 2021. We had about 1,043 persons on treatment, HIV treatment, in 2013. The treatment guidelines were a little different then and we moved to treating all persons with HIV infec tion regardless of their illness stage, or whether they were having symptoms. We were one of the first Caribbean countries to do that in 2015 and so the number of persons on treatment in 2021 was about 3,047.” That’s more people being treated – which doesn’t show more people infected, just that the treatment is getting out there to those who were in need.Better still, no babies were born with HIV in The Bahamas in 2019, 2020 or 2021. Prior to that, the years 2010 and 2015 were also years with no babies born with HIV. Progress that’s clear to see and for the most important of us all our children. It has been a long fight against HIV/ AIDS in this country – and it has been one that has been fought across all social lines. There have been the Red Ribbon Balls to raise funds and awareness, bringing in corporate and private donors. There have been the efforts of health care workers, either helping people to know their status or to ensure treatment is available.Andthere have been the efforts of successive administrations, focusing resources and efforts towards the fight. We’re not there yet. This is progress, not our journey’s end. We’re ahead of target on reaching the 95 percent figure of people living with HIV knowing their status. But those who have ensured we have reached this point know the areas we still need to work on – Dr Forbes highlighted the need for better partner ships, for example, and issues regarding hoarding of medication or patients using multipleGettingnames.thenumber of deaths to zero is still a goal we are working towards. But this is good news. We applaud every person who has devoted time and energy towards this forward progress. Now is not the time to let up, but to see us to those remaining targets. Well done, all. This is an achievement that can literally be measured in life and death.

Culture of abuse

The long battle to defeat HIV/AIDS

NO NAME SeptemberNassau, 4, 2022.

toCongratulationstheAllens LETTERS letters@tribunemedia.net

I HAVE been privileged to have known the Hon Algernon SPB Allen and his lovely wife, Dame Anita Allen, for all of their lives. They are both a few years older than myself, but I well remember them from the days when we were all at ‘the’ Government High School, then located at Poinciana Drive where the University of The Bahamas is now housed. It would appear that the ‘love affair’ began way back then. A few years later they were married and have produced at least two chil dren, both lawyers like their parents. Algernon Junior currently serves the nation as a magistrate. The daughter has been in the securities and financial services industry for many years, successfully. Last week the Allens celebrated 48 years of what Dame Anita implied were ‘good years’. This speaks vol umes for Bulgie as a good husband and father. They have demonstrated what the Bahamian family used to be like and which will be emulated.Bulgie,of course, entered front line politics way back in the 1960’s when he served as a campaign advi sor and worker for the late Hon Sinclair Outten for what is now the St Barna bas constituency. Sinclair was successful. Years later, after he had departed from the PLP, Bulgie was elected as the MP for Mara thon. He was appointed to several ministerial posts, inclusive of the Minister of Youth; Sports & Culture. I was privileged to work with him at the then Minis try of Social Development & Housing, at the behest of former Prime Minis ter, the Rt Hon Hubert A Ingraham.Bolgie coined the phrases: little darlings and precious pearls. He was also instrumental in obtaining the then cabinet’s approval and funding for: Peace on the Streets and Operation Redemption, according to Pastor Dave Burrows of Bahamas Faith Missions. He excelled as a practitioner at the Criminal Bar and was, in my opin ion, almost as smart as I would have demonstrated when he was my ‘rival’ at the Bar. The rivalry, if it could be called such, was always professional and respectful. Algernon also mentored outstanding prac titioners like former Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez and Barry Sawyer, who both emerged from Bulgie’s chambers which are still around serving the people of The Bahamas. His wife, of course, served as a Crown Coun sel; an acting Magistrate; a Justice of the Supreme Court; Chief Justice; President of The Baha mas Court of Appeal and recently as Chairperson of The Bahamas Law Reform Commission. And so, I congratulate the Allen family and the whole clan, inclusive of the celebrated sister, Pauline, a former managing executive at The Bank of The Bahamas and other leading financial institutions.Last, but not least, the Allen family has devel oped a vibrant real estate subdivision in the prime Coral Harbor region, which is bustling. As a former Minister with responsibil ity for Housing, Bulgie was instrumental within the Ingraham administra tion, of conceptualising and actually putting boots on the ground and shovels in the ground for the show case subdivision of Millen nium Gardens. Both of the Allens have been honoured by successive administra tions, but they have much more contributions to make to the advancement of our wonderful nation. May The Lord Jesus Christ continue to bless you both and undergird the children. Selah.

Solution to the teachers problem

EDITOR, The Tribune. THIS morning while stopped at a red light, there was a car in the adjacent lane with a woman driver and two children, in the back seat. One child, about 18 months old was in a car seat behind the passenger’s seat. The older child was behind the driver’s seat and the woman was shouting at him and pointing her finger in his face threatening to hit him and calling him names. The child was visibly dis traught and dejected. I was sorely tempted to inter vene, but decided against confronting an angry female in Recentlytraffic.in your daily there was an article with a local group asking the gov ernment to do more about “gender” related issues. They voiced concerns about domestic violence and rape, etc, but when will we address the real issue here. Men were once boys who were most often raised in homes with women. Abuse first takes place in the home and even if it is not physical abuse, there is likely verbal abuse like I witnessed. The scars and trauma from hurt ful words last far longer than those of physical abuse as most people should know from personal experience. We see this culture of abuse all around us. Angry women (sometimes men too) shouting at their chil dren in public, forcefully pulling them by the arm or threatening what they will do to them when they get home. Those entrusted with innocence destroy it with angry words that adversely affect a child’s perception of themselves, their self worth and that of others. These children are allowed to marinate in an environ ment of anger and hostility, being unloved for most of their childhoods and then we expect them to be kind, responsible, loving and pro ductive members of society? What I saw this morning was sad, but it is also reflec tive of a simple truth, many women are responsible for creating the monsters that become abusers of others. Too many children are being raised in a culture of abuse. Too many people have children before they are emotionally or finan cially ready for them. Too many do not understand their responsibilities as par ents. We are reaping what we have collectively sown. It’s time to face that simple truth and change!

NO ARRESTS OVER FATAL DOG ATTACK

The new investors will also establish an after-salesservice centre at the marina property for their high net worth clients. The project is expected to be completed over the next two to three years. About 30 to 40 new fulltime jobs will be created for Bahamians.Thesale announce ment was officially made on Friday at Running Mon and was said to represent “a transformational day” for the resort and marina facil ity, which closed in 2019 due to Hurricane Dorian and then the pandemic. In attendance were Grand Bahama Minister Ginger Moxey, who welcomed the investors to the island; Tamas Hamor, CEO of Xquisite Yachts; David Townsend, CFO; Stephen Joyce, Xqui site Global Service Manager, and Eugene Samarin, the company’sXquisiteattorney.Yachtsowns and operates several yacht man ufacturing factories around the world, including in Por tugal and South Africa. According to Mr Townsend, they will under take “a comprehensive repair programme and rejuvenation plan” for the Running Mon facility. We anticipate at the end this will be a $3m to $5m project for us with the build-out, and it will take us two to three years, but we are hoping to speed that up,” he said. “But once this project is finished, we anticipate there will be 30 to 40 in full-time employment here, a service centre to repair boats, an upgraded suite hotel, and we will open the marina and the restaurant – which has history in Freeport. And we will be doing some sailing charters here and doing some sail training for customers.” Mr Townsend said they would like to have local people run the fishing and scuba charters for them. “We want to have an allinclusive facility to bring high net worth customers and offer them different experiences in the Bahamas, and we want to partner with Bahamian businesses to achieve that,” he explained. “We actually completed the purchase last night (Thursday), so we are fully committed,” he said. According to Mr Hamor, Xquisite Yachts started eight years ago. “Our goal was to do it better than other builders to create a brand where we not just hand over the boat to the owners, but we take care of them during the lifetime of the boat,” he said. “We created an aftersales service unmatched in the industry. We started one model that became an instant success,” he stated. He said their partner Felix Marine in South Africa build quality world-class boats for them. He said their first model, the X5, won Boat of the Year in America in 2017. And their second model, which just recently launched, the X5 plus 1, won Boat of the Year 2022. The company is growing and is now working on four new models at the same time with the new factory in Por tugal, Hamor reported. Due to the company’s growth, he noted they needed to expand their after sales ser vice and infrastructure to grow together with more boats they have on the water. “This led to us needing to have a base, with the proper service centre where owners can bring in their boats for commissioning the new boats, repair of the new boats, upgrades further maintenance of the boats, and have a hub where owners can get together,” heMrsaid.Hamor said Grand Bahama was the right place for their new venture.

Arthur Swan, the brother of the deceased, told The Tribune in a recent inter view that his brother used to be on the streets asking people for money due to his mental condition, however that did not stop his family from loving him. “He’s been in that con dition for some 40 plus years,” Mr Swan explained. “As a result of the drugs and the drugs led into a mental issue, he never rebounded. As much as my family tried, because we had him committed to Sandilands on numerous occasions. We paid a private psychologist and psychia trist to deal with him on numerous occasions, but to noPoliceavail.” are encourag ing members of the public who have overly aggres sive or uncontrollable dogs that they cannot restrain in aggressive situations or circumstances, consistently bark, are always agitated, fight, create disturbances with other animals, or try to attack people, to ensure their yards are properly secured and enclosed to prevent their animals escaping.Members of the public are reminded that all dogs should be licensed and can visit the Department of Agriculture, Gladstone Road to pay the requi site fee of $6.72. POLICE said no arrests have been made in connec tion with the death of the man attacked by a dog last weekend.According to reports, around 4am on Saturday, August 27, police were called to the intersection of Palm Tree Avenue and East Street where they discov ered the man’s body with injuries consistent with bite marks. When asked by The Tribune if any arrest had been made in connection with the incident police press liaison officer Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said “not as yet”. “Police are presently con ducting their investigations and once they have gotten to that point in the investi gation where they feel like they need to speak to some body else they will make an arrest,” CSP Skippings said. “Once we have the infor mation that someone is in custody, we will forward that information and if it leads to someone being charged, we will keep members of the public informed.”Anthony Swan was the 61-year-old man police suspect was mauled to death by several dogs.

“This is one of the pro jects that we spoke about over the last few months which is part of the over $1billion worth of projects in the pipeline for Grand Bahama,” he said. “This is one of major projects to bring about great oppor tunity for members and citizens in Grand Bahama, and the Bahamas,” he stated.Derek Newbold, chief investment officer at GBPA, said Running Mon Marina has been a part of Grand Bahama’s landscape for decades. “Unfortu nately, over the past six years they have experienced a number of challenges as a result of hurricanes that came through and now the global pandemic,” he said. “However, today represents a transformational day for Running Mon Marina and Resort.“With the acquisition of this property by Xquisite Yachts Bahamas Limited and the planned upgrades, they will help to re-estab lish Running Mon as one of the premier marinas in the northern Bahamas.” Mr Newbold believes the introduction of a service centre for the multi-million yachts that they manufac ture will attract high net worth individuals to Grand Bahama.“Weexpect that to have spin off impact for the island and the city in terms of employment opportunity, stemming from the con struction period, but also by the time the phases are com pletely built out,” he said. “But even more impor tantly is the fact that it will create footprintlishtheyNewbold.timeandBahamiansmians, opportunitiesentrepreneurialforBahaandalsoexposetonewskillstraininginthemarisector,”addedMr“ItisourhopewilleventuallyestabamanufacturinginFreeportgiven the proximity to America, and they will operate from a special economic zone where they have access to certain trade advantage and benefits.”MrsMoxey believes the investment has “enormous potential”.“Thisis indeed a grand day for Grand Bahama island, and we welcome this investment,” she said. “We welcome the faith you put in this resort here. We have been through a lot and the potential is so enormous. In our Blueprint for Change, Grand Bahama is envisioned to become home of maritime logistic, home of events and entertainment, and the home of innovation. What you plan to do here is innovative. “And to hear that you are going to be reviving the restaurant is great for our island,” she said. “There are a lot of projects to come, and I believe people will be excited about what is going to happen.”

“I like Grand Bahama and the Bahamas in gen eral,” he said. “Over the years of sailing around the world to over 90 countries, we spent so many months in the Bahamas, and year after year we came back. And my wife and I got married in Eleuthera seven years ago. And strategically, the closeness to Florida where 90 percent of our four boats are sold in the US market. And so, this is the perfect spot.”“We believe Running Mon is not the best tourist location; it does not have direct beach access; it’s overlooking the boat yard. It is not what the average tourist would want. How ever, this is the location that we need, for this boating centre where they can come in and know we have a crew here to take care of the boats. It was perfect match made in heaven.” Ian Rolle, Grand Bahama Port Authority president, said this investment is one of several major invest ments in the pipeline for GB.

THE Running Mon Marina and Resort in Grand Bahama has been acquired by Xquisite Yachts, an award-winning yacht manufacturing com pany that plans to invest in the region of $3m to $5m to undertake major upgrades at the property.

Holes, bumps and shoddy road repairs

TRAFFIC veering around a gaping hole on Eastern Road yesterday. way over a rough patch of road at Montagu.

By STRACHANMALCOLM

THE STORIES BEHIND THE NEWS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2022

To advertise in The 502-2394contactTribune, : years’ ” ” : ” ” “ ”

IS it just my imagination or are our roads getting worse and worse again? Driving along Eastern Road last week, suddenly there’s another badly filled in hole after one of the util ity companies had done some digging. It looked like they’d done nothing more than thrown in some sand after they’d completed their work, leaving a gaping hole that either left drivers rattling their teeth as they drove over it or caused traffic to back all the way up as eve ryone slowed down to veer around it on one side or theIt’sother.far from the only one – further down on Bay Street, there’s another simi lar hole not far beyond the bridges, leaving drivers to hit the brakes and pull around it, hopefully with traffic coming down the outside lane seeing them in time to avoid a collision. I can think of half a dozen other spots with potholes right away too, and I’m sure you can too, in your own local neighbourhoods or on your regular traffic routes. So is it getting worse? It seems so. What happened to those fines that were being brought in to make sure potholes got filled in quickly and properly by utilityBackcompanies?under the last administration, amend ments were passed in February 2019 to the Road Act to clamp down on companies that were lax in restoring roads to an acceptable standard. And throwing a few buckets of sand in and driving away isn’tTheacceptable.oldfine used to be just $75 – cheaper to take the fine than to pay for the items you needed to do the job properly. The change bumped that fine up to $10,000, with an extra $5,000 for every day the nuisance continued. So where are the fines? Where even are the inspections of the roads to see where the problems are? Did you know there was a WhatsApp line set up to report such pot holes? Former Minister of Works Desmond Bannister announced it at the time –376-0939. He said: “Nobody should be calling the minis ter about potholes. Send it to our WhatsApp line and you will get an immediate response.”Still, asystem that leans on citizens reporting after the fact isn’t a proactive one. Why not simply have utility companies having a requirement to report to the ministry the location and extent of works, and a standard inspection being carried out afterwards. If they’ve done it right, that inspection is a two-minute drive-by. If they haven’t, then break out the fines. Of course, works car ried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Works can be frustrating too –as anyone who has been in the vicinity of Village Road lately will tell you. Both ends of the road were blocked last week, and par ents of children at Queen’s College were left to devise ways through backways and side roads to get there. Even the places that are open are only navigable with caution. The junction with the traffic lights at Shirley Street resembles the surface of the moon, while further down, the junction at the lights by Montagu has a bone-juddering rift that runs the full width of the road. Slow down or find out exactly how good your car’s shock absorbers are. Half the time, you see potholes in the same places over and over again. Even former minister Mr Ban nister commented on that when in the job back in 2018. He said: “The pot holes that are there have been appearing in the same places at the same time of year for many, many, many years. The problem has been that we’ve had quick, temporary solutions rather than holistically looking at them and dealing with them appropriately.”Trueenough, but we’re stillEventhere.having had a Royal visit lately hasn’t helped – that Village Road con struction dug up some of the smooth new surface laid for visitors who we didn’t want to disturb with a bump. No,bumpy roads are just for commoners like you or me, it seems. I know this all seems like a grumble – and it prob ably is to some extent – but really what is the point of putting forward laws to clamp down on such things and then never using them? We all know the places that have the same holes and bumps over and over again, so I’m sure the staff working at the ministry must be aware too. And relying on public reporting leads to detective work to figure out which company did what rather than just having a simple log of what has been done where.Itseems we could still be doing better – so why not do so? If only for the sake of all our bones as we rattle our way across sub-stand ard roads and inadequate repairs.

THERE are certain definitive sink or swim moments throughout our lives that define each and every one of us. Those moments, while outwardly silent but internally scream ing, require hope, stamina and strength of character to survive. This necessary strength is bolstered by knowing that someday, over time and as the seasons change, life will once again become bearable and if for tunate enough, happy and fulfilled.Last week we started with part one of Rebekah’s life story, a true life tale of a Bahamian who’s endured more than any one human being should ever be asked to tolerate, especially a woman of such kindness and courage. We pick up today where we left off last Monday.Stillreeling from the breakdown of her near 20-year marriage, get ting stabbed, shot and the death of her beloved par ents, Rebekah had made it through each ordeal emotionally strong and aware of the consider able alchemy required to push forward. As the years passed, she focused on her three children, her teaching career and her life regained some level of comfortable normalcy.Rebekah’s sons had moved out and started a life of their own but her daughter and young grand son lived at home with her determined never to leave her side after nearly losing her in two separate acts of violence. But in a cruel twist of fate, it was Rebekah who had to take care of her daughter after she was abruptly diagnosed with an aggressive form of Lym phoma. When her daughter began to lose weight and constantly felt tired and out of breath, Rebekah knew something was wrong. It wasn’t until she began to palpate swollen masses in her armpits and neck region that they both truly became concerned.Abattery of tests revealed that the cancer had extensively invaded her immune system. Rebekah now knew that the trials she’d endured and the strength she mustered to survive were so that she could teach her daughter how to do the same. She had her entire life ahead of her and once again Rebekah found herself in the position of pleading with someone she loved desperately not to die. But unlike her elderly mother, Rebekah’s daughter agreed to fight. She endured long bouts of chemotherapy and radiation and a roll ercoaster ride of good, followed by bad news.

By DR KENNETH D KEMP

The death of her children left Rebekah emotionally vacuous and broken. She wasn’t finished loving them, worrying about them and seeing them every day. But despite it all, her take-home message is that even though you face trials in life, you can never give up. You have to have faith, keep moving forward and keep surviving. Now, at almost 80 years old, Rebekah reflects on her life with a small measure of sadness and despondence. It wasn’t the life that she dreamed of as a young girl growing up on the island of Andros, happily running in her parent’s backyard and dreaming of a day when she’d be an adult with her own home and family. But despite it all, Rebekah gives God thanks daily. Others may think that she’s cursed based on the challenges that she’s faced but Rebekah willingly shared her story because she knows that she’s infinitely blessed. Whatever storm has come her way, she’s survived against all odds, stronger, wiser, more empathetic and above all else, fully capable of finding absolute happiness in the simplest of things; the things that truly matter.Thisis

Rebekah stood by her side through every attack of nausea and vomiting and moments of crying, anger and despair. They enjoyed every second that she was pain free and talked a lot about food and family. In the end, her fight proved unsuccessful. Rebekah’s daughter died having fought a remarkably heroic fight, entrusting the care of her only son to her mother. The loss of her daughter caused a painful and dark void in Rebekah’s soul that she never thought possi ble. She’d been through so much – the regular infidelity of her husband, the stab bing attack by a mistress, moving back in with her parents, losing both of them one right after the other and being shot at close range by an armed robber – in each case, Rebekah fought through the dark ness and struggled to find the light. But this time, the loss was almost too much. She fought depression and being swallowed by its never-ending abyss, day and night for months to stay strong for her remain ing children and grandson. Because of it, she and her grandson became incred ibly close. Her sons were now grown so having him need her gave her the will to get up every day. Seeing him smile again as she hugged him every night before bedtime filled her soul with love. One night a year later when he awoke to the smell of something burn ing, he quickly ran to be at his grandmother’s side. Rebekah got up to deter mine where the smell was coming from but by then it was too late. An electrical surge had caused the fan in her grandson’s bedroom to spontaneously burst into flames, quickly igniting his window curtains. Before Rebekah knew it, his bed room was engulfed in fire. She ran with him outside to safety but within less than an hour, her entire home, the home of her parents, with all its cherished pos sessions collected over the course of several lifetimes, was now Rebekahgone.felt numb and powerless as her grandson held a tight death-grip on her leg sobbing over what had just transpired. She felt like she’d somehow failed her parents and her daugh ter, frantically worrying if something she had done or failed to do had caused the fire.Using a neighbour’s phone, she called her sons. When they arrived on the scene, she left with one son as the other stayed to preserve any uncharred belongings that he could retrieve in the dark. Unable to bear the sight and unwill ing to expose her grandson to any further fumes, Rebekah had to go. She smiled as her son kissed her goodnight but cried as she lay in his guest bed, unable to fall Rebekahasleep.overheard her sons talking on the phone about rebuilding her home. It comforted her to know that she wasn’t alone and their support, along with that of her siblings, her co-workers and church community was the tower of strength that she needed to push through the pain and doubt. But as the construc tion of her home neared completion, everything stopped as the COVID-19 pandemic struck. She and her family followed every precaution and initially they fared well but a year in, one of her sons was exposed. His symptoms pro gressed quickly. He went from having a mild fever with general fatigue and complete loss of taste to a dreadful cough, extreme body aches and difficulty breathing. Being isolated from him was insuffer able and Rebekah never got a chance to hold him and plead with him to fight because three years follow ing the death of his sister, he died. Rebekah was illprepared to outlive another child. Now, the woman with an irregular heartbeat that had been stressed time and time again felt as if her heart were broken in two, never to be mended. The loss was unbearable and yet, eventu ally she did rebound enough to share her story and leave us with a message about the importance of living in the moment.Among us, there are many unsung heroes who quietly live grateful for every second of life, often times because they’ve come so close to losing it. They’ve endured so many egregious hardships that hearing and reading about them simply seems unbelievable. I’m amazed at the resilience that so many of my patients have shown throughout their lives and I am forever more grateful that they are willing to share their jour ney so that others can grow.

THE most ominous sign of what the forthcoming COP-27 meeting on climate change portends for small states is that officials from a Group of 20 (G20) major economies, who met on August 31, failed to agree a joint statement at the con clusion of the meeting. The meeting, held in Bali, started with a stark warn ing from the Indonesia Environment Minister, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, that the planet was being pushed to the point “where no future is sustainable”.AttheCOP-26 meet ing in Glasgow last year, world leaders acknowl edged that their pledges to reduce carbon emissions have not met the previously agreed goal of keeping global temperatures “well below” 2 degrees Celsius. They vowed to do better. It appears now, that they won’t.In Bali, some coun tries objected to language, agreed at COP-26 in Glas gow on how they would contribute to limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Not for the first time, countries, which are among the world’s biggest pol luters, are reneging on commitments made as far back as Pledges,2009. which were announced with great fanfare and rousingly wel comed by the desperately hopeful, are now being backpedalled. This back pedalling has come in a year when the brutal effects of climate change have been painfully undeniable. Yet, these distressing con ditions have not moved governments, which place their short-term domestic political interests over the well-being of the planet and, specifically, the small countries, such as those in the Caribbean, that are worstExtremeaffected.weather events have also battered several parts of the world, not only small states which can least withstand or recover from them. Fires, floods, and heat waves have pummeled Euro pean countries, the United States, Africa, and Asia. In recent weeks, unprecedented flooding killed at least 1,000 persons in Pakistan. And, East Africa is now experi encing the driest conditions it has faced for 70 years. More than 20 million people are affected and suffering from foodTheshortages.Caribbean is still amid the 2022 hurricane season, enduring heat waves, unexpected high rainfall, and floods, followed by long periods of drought. Above all, the islands are anxious that no hurricane befalls them, although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra tion (NOAA) has predicted a 65% chance of an abovenormal season, which does not end until November 1. But, even in the face of evidence and authori tative warnings that human-caused climate change is increasing in severity and frequency, as the planet is pushed closer to the perilous thresh old of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the world’s worst polluters refuse to budge. This caused Britain’s cli mate delegate in Bali, Alok Sharma, who chaired the Glasgow COP-26 meet ing, to lament that “It is certainly the case that a number of countries are backsliding on the commit ments that they made in Paris and in Glasgow”. He described the situation as “incredibly worrying”. And so, it is. The G20 countries account for 80% of global emissions. Ten of them are most responsible for the current CO2 emis sions that cause climate change. They are China (28.6%), the U.S. (16%), and India (5.8%) Russia (5.4%), Japan (3.7% ) Germany (2.4%), South Korea (1.7% ), Canada (1.6% ), Indonesia (1.41% ) and Saudi Arabia (1.4%).

The first five countries are responsible for 55.8%. It is they who must cut their emissions.Further, the rich nations, which expect other coun tries, including small island states, to cut their already minuscule CO2 emissions, must also satisfy their financing pledges. Since 2009, the promise was made to provide $100 billion to help developing countries to meet their nationally determined contribution (NDC) to fight climate change. The figure has never been achieved. COP-27 in Egypt should not be yet another handwringing exercise, followed by long and lofty dec larations and worn-out promises, with no binding commitment to severely cut emissions and to provide the necessary funding to developing countries. Small island states and countries with low-lying coastlands should not simply indulge in negotia tions on documents replete with escape clauses and no genuine path forward. At all the past conferences, small states have been fobbed off with promises. They have been persuaded to defend the indefensible and to describe the unac ceptable as an achievement. Meanwhile, their conditions are worsening. So, too, are their long-term prospects as they suffer increasing damage and losses with no compensation, or even a readiness to discuss such compensation meaningfully. That is why small island states should now sup port two initiatives that have been taken by their own. The first is a deci sion by Vanuatu to seek an advisory opinion by the International Court of Jus tice on the rights of present and future generations to be protected from climate change. Vanuatu needs at least 97 votes at the UN General Assembly, which begins later this month, in order for the matter to be referred to the ICJ. Every small state should be present and voting to show their solidarity and seriousness about resist ing the climate change tide that is drowning them increasingly.Thesecond initiative that should get the fullest par ticipation of small states is the work of the Commis sion of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law (COSIS), which was launched at COP-26 by the Prime Minis ters of Antigua and Barbuda and Tuvalu, to pursue climate justice for their countries and other small island states, through a legal approach to the Interna tional Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. This initiative has now attracted the backing of 14 legal experts in interna tional law who are actively working on the project. Meanwhile, serious note must be taken of the gravity of the statement made by the Chair of COP-26, who said that the position, taken by some countries in Bali on August 31, was unac ceptable. “The big emitters absolutely need to look these climate vulnerable countries in the eye and say they are doing absolutely everything they can to deliver on the commitments they have made”. If that does not happen, small states should col lectively and visibly take action to seek climate justice outside the COP process. None should resign themselves to the conse quences of abandonment.

The problem First, I asked respondents a series of basic questions about American politics. This quiz included topics like which party controls the House of Representa tives – the Democrats – and who the current Secretary of Energy is – Jennifer Gra nholm. Then, I asked them how well they thought they did on the quiz. Many respondents who believed they were top performers were actually among those who scored the worst. Much akin to the results of a famous study by Dunning and Kruger, the poorest performers did not generally realize that they lagged behind their peers. Of the 1,209 people who participated, around 70% were overconfident about their knowledge of politics. But this basic pattern was not the most worrying part of the results. The overconfident respondents failed to change their attitudes in response to my warnings about political falsehoods. My investigation showed that they did read the statements, and could report details about what they said. But their atti tudes toward falsehoods remained inflexible, likely because they – wrongly – considered themselves political experts. But if I could make over confident respondents more humble, would they actually take my warnings about political falsehoods to heart? Poor self-assessment My experiment sought to examine what happens when overconfident people are told their political knowledge is lacking. To do this, I randomly assigned respondents to receive one of three experimental treatments after taking the political knowledge quiz. These were as follows: • Respondents received statements teaching them to avoid political falsehoods. • Respondents did not receive the statements. • Respondents received both the statements and a “reality check” treat ment. The reality check showed how respondents fared on the political quiz they took at the beginning of the survey. Along with their raw score, the report showed how respondents ranked among 1,000 of their peers. For example, respond ents who thought they had aced the quiz might have learned that they got one out of five questions right, and that they scored worse than 82% of their peers. For many overconfident respondents, this “reality check” treatment brought them down to earth. They reported much less over confidence on average when I followed up with them. Finally, I asked all the respondents in the study to report their levels of skepti cism toward five statements. These statements are all common political false hoods. One statement, for example, asserted that vio lent crime had risen over the prior decade – it hadn’t. Another claimed the U.S. spent 18% of the federal budget on foreign aid – the real number was less than 1%.Iexpected most respond ents who had received my cautionary statements to become more skeptical of these misinformed state ments. On average, they did. But did overconfident respondents learn this lesson too? Reality check: accomplishedMission The results of the study showed that overconfi dent respondents began to take political falsehoods seriously only if they had experienced my “reality check” treatment first. While overconfident respondents in other condi tions showed no reaction, the humbling nature of the “reality check,” when they realized how wrong they had been, led overconfident participants in that condi tion to revise their beliefs. They increased their skepti cism of political falsehoods by a statistically significant margin.Overall, this “reality check” experiment was a success. But it reveals that outside of the experiment, political overconfidence stands in the way of many Americans’ ability to accu rately perceive political reality. The problem of political overconfidenceWhat, ifanything, can be done about the widespread phenomenon of political overconfidence?Whilemy research cannot determine whether political overconfidence is increasing over time, it makes intuitive sense that this problem would be growing in importance in an era of online politi cal discourse. In the online realm, it is often difficult to appraise the credibility of anonymous users. This means that false claims are easily spread by unin formed people who merely sound confident. To combat this problem, social media companies and opinion leaders could seek ways to promote dis course that emphasises humility and self-correc tion. Because confident, mistaken self-expression can easily drown out more credible voices in the online realm, social media apps could consider promot ing humility by reminding posters to reconsider the “stance,” or assertiveness, of their Whileposts.this may seem far-fetched, recent devel opments show that small nudges can lead to powerful shifts in social media users’ online behavior. For example, Twitter’s recent inclusion of a pop-up message that asks wouldbe posters of news articles to “read before tweeting” caused users to rethink their willingness to share potentially misleading content.Agentle reminder to avoid posting bold claims without evidence is just one possible way that social media companies could encourage good online behaviour. With another election season soon upon us, such a corrective is urgently needed.

AMERICANS THINK THEY KNOW A LOT ABOUT POLITICS – AND IT’S BAD FOR DEMOCRACY THAT THEY’RE SO OFTEN WRONG IN THEIR CONFIDENCE

AS statewide prima ries continue through the summer, many Americans are beginning to think about which candidates they will support in the 2022 general election. This decision-making process is fraught with dif ficulties, especially for inexperienced voters. Voters must navigate angry, emotion-laden con versations about politics when trying to sort out whom to vote for. Ameri cans are more likely than ever to view politics in moral terms, meaning their political conversations sometimes feel like epic battles between good and evil. But political conversa tions are also shaped by, obviously, what Americans know – and, less obviously, what they think they know – about politics. In recent research, I studied how Americans’ perceptions of their own political knowledge shape their political attitudes. My results show that many Americans think they know much more about politics than they really do. Knowledge deficit, confidence surplus Over the past five years, I have studied the phe nomenon of what I call “political overconfidence”. My work, in tandem with other researchers’ studies, reveals the ways it thwarts democratic politics. Political overconfidence can make people more defensive of factually wrong beliefs about politics. It also causes Americans to under estimate the political skill of their peers. And those who believe themselves to be political experts often dismiss the guidance of real experts.Political overconfidence also interacts with political partisanship, making parti sans less willing to listen to peers across the aisle. The result is a breakdown in the ability to learn from one another about political issues and events. A ‘reality experimentcheck’ In my most recent study on the subject, I tried to find out what would happen when politically overconfi dent people found out they were mistaken about politi calTofacts.do this, I recruited a sample of Americans to participate in a survey experiment via the Lucid recruitment platform. In the experiment, some respond ents were shown a series of statements that taught them to avoid common political falsehoods. For instance, one statement explained that while many people believe that Social Security will soon run out of money, the reality is less dire than it seems. My hypothesis was that most people would learn from the statements, and become more wary of repeating common political falsehoods. However, as I have found in my previous studies, a problem quickly emerged.

STRONGER Neigh bourhoods Bahamas Foundation (SNB) will be partnering with the Royal Bahamas Police Force for an upcoming student speech competition focused on crime prevention. SNB president Giovanni Ferguson and his team of SNB Foundation executives met with Police Commis sioner Clayton Fernander and other police officials on Thursday to discuss issues related to crime preven tion, community support, and support for non-gov ernmental entities and community efforts. With the country’s murder climbing, as well as what police called a “startling” rise in reported cases of rape this year, Mr Ferguson said the need for discussion about crime prevention is more impor tant than ever. “SNB will be working with RBPF on an upcom ing speech competition on crime prevention,” said Mr Ferguson.TheYouthSpeak Speech Competition will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday, September 21, at the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre at Police Headquar ters on East Street. The speech competition will be held in honour of 13-year-old Quinton Danny McKenzie, a student of L W Young, who died in hospital after being shot at a park in the Kemp Road area in June.Mr Ferguson said: “This competition will engage school students from grades seven through 12 who will give their views and ideas on crime prevention.” SNB Foundation is a Bahamian non-profit that seeks to build and sustain strong com munities through empowerment, the crea tion of social opportunities and other efforts through partnership.Thespeech compe tition is one of four initiatives SNB Foundation has planned, in conjunc tion with the RBPF. This partnership also aims to develop a centralised plan for non-governmental and charitable entities, increase community assistance in giving known information that can assist with inves tigations and developing a database system for com munity initiatives such as food drives for manage ment and monitoring.

“No one in this town is ever going to sleep again. They’re going to be terri fied to open their door,” said Weldon resident Ruby Works, who was close to one of the victims. Police, meanwhile, said a vehicle reportedly car rying the two suspects had been spotted in Regina, about 208 miles south of the communities where the stabbings occurred. Regina police chief Evan Bray said late yesterday they still believe the sus pects are in Regina. “If in the Regina area, take precautions & con sider sheltering in place. Do not leave a secure location. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitch hikers. Report suspicious persons, emer gencies or info to 9-1-1. Do not disclose police loca tions,” the RCMP said in a message on Twitter.

CANADIAN police searched across the expansive province of Sas katchewan for two suspects believed to have stabbed to death ten people in an indigenous community and a nearby town in one of the deadliest mass killings in the country’s history. The suspects also injured 15 people in the series of knife attacks that led the James Smith Cree Nation to declare a state of emer gency and badly shook residents of the nearby vil lage of Weldon.

The suspects were identi fied as Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30.“It is horrific what has occurred in our prov ince today,” said Rhonda Blackmore, the Assis tant Commissioner of the RCMP in Saskatch ewan, adding there were 13 crime scenes where either deceased or injured people wereBlackmorefound. said some of the victims appear to have been targeted by the suspects but others appear to have been attacked at random.Shecouldn’t provide a motive, but the chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations gave a statement suggesting the stabbings could be drug related. The elected leaders of the three communities that make up the James Smith Cree Nation, including the Chakastaypasin Band and the Peter Chapman Band, declared a local state of emergency and opened up two emergency operations centers.Chakastaypasin Chief Calvin Sanderson - who is not related to the sus pects - said everyone’s been affected by the tragic events.“They were our relatives, friend,” Sanderson said of the victims. “It’s pretty horrific.”“This is the destruc tion we face when harmful illegal drugs invade our communities, and we demand all authorities to take direction from the Chiefs and Councils and their membership to create safer and healthier commu nities for our people,” said Chief Bobby Cameron of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations. Among the ten victims killed was Lana Head, who is the former partner of Michael Brett Burns, and the mother of their two daughters.Burns told the Abo riginal Peoples Television Network that “It’s sick how jail time, drugs and alcohol can destroy many lives,” he said. “I’m hurt for all this loss.”Last May, Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers issued a wanted list that included Myles Sanderson, writing that he was “unlawfully at large.”Itis among the deadliest mass killings in Canadian history. The deadliest gun rampage in Canadian his tory happened in 2020 when a man disguised as a police officer shot people in their homes and set fires across the province of Nova Scotia, killing 22 people. A man used a van to kill 10 pedestrians in Toronto in 2019. But mass killings are less common in Canada than in the United States. Deadly mass stabbings are more rare than mass shoot ings but have happened around the world. In 2014, 29 people were slashed and stabbed to death at a train station in China’s south western city of Kunming. In 2016, a mass stabbing at a facility for the mentally disa bled in Sagamihara, Japan, left 19 people dead. A year later, three men killed eight people in a vehicle and stabbing attack at London Bridge.Doreen Lees, an 89-year grandmother from Weldon, said she and her daugh ter thought they saw one of the suspects when a car came barreling down her street early in the morning Sunday as her daughter was having coffee on her deck. Lees said a man approached them and said he was hurt and needed help. But Lees said the man took off and ran after her daughter said she would call for help. “He wouldn’t show his face. He had a big jacket over his face. We asked his name and he kind of mum bled his name twice and we still couldn’t get it,” she said. “He said his face was injured so bad he couldn’t showSheit.”said the man was by himself and “kind of a little wobbly”.“Ifollowed him a little ways to see if he was going to be OK. My daughter said ‘Don’t follow him, get back here.’”Weldon residents have identified one of the victims as Wes Petterson. Ruby Works said the 77-year-old widower was like an uncle to “Iher.collapsed and hit the ground. I’ve known him since I was just a little girl,” she said, describing the moment she heard the news. She said he loved his cats, was proud of his home made Saskatoon berry jam and frequently helped out his“Heneighbors.didn’t do anything. He didn’t deserve this. He was a good, kind hearted man,” said Works. Weldon resident Robert Rush also described the victim as a gentle, widowed man in his 70s. ``He wouldn’t hurt a fly,” heRushsaid. said Petterson’s adult grandson was in the basement at the time and phoned police. At the Weldon Chris tian Tabernacle Church the congregation began their regular Sunday service by saying a special prayer to the victims and their families.Atthe James Smith Cree Nation, a convenience store that also serves as a gas station became a gather ing place for community members, who greeted each other with tears and hugs. A sign on the door said: “Due to safety concerns with our community we will remain closed until further notice.”Thesearch for suspects was carried out as fans descended on Regina for a sold out annual Labor Day game between the Cana dian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughrid ers and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.TheRegina Police Ser vice said in a news release that with the help of Mounties, it was working on several fronts to locate and arrest the suspects and had “deployed additional resources for public safety throughout the city, includ ing the football game at Mosaic Stadium.” The alert first issued by Melfort, Saskatch ewan RCMP about 7 a.m. was extended hours later to cover Manitoba and Alberta, as the two suspects remained at large. The Saskatchewan Health Authority said mul tiple patients were being treated at several sites. “A call for additional staff was issued to respond to the influx of casualties,” author ity spokeswoman Anne Linemann said in an email. Canadian Prime Minis ter Justin Trudeau said in a statement he was “shocked and devastated by the hor rific attacks”.

LIZ Truss, who is widely expected to become Brit ain’s new prime minister this week, has pledged to act within a week to tackle a cost-of-living crisis fueled by soaring energy bills linked to the war in Ukraine. But Truss, speaking to the BBC on Sunday, refused to provide any details on the actions she would take. She said that she understands the magnitude of the prob lems facing Britain.

UK LIKELY NEW PM ‘TO TACKLE COST OF LIVING’

The government has been unable to address soar ing inflation, labour strife and strains on the nation’s health-care system since early July, when Johnson announced his intention to resign and triggered a con test to choose his successor. The Conservative Party will announce the winner today. “I want to reassure people that I am absolutely determined to sort out this issue as well as, within a month, present a full plan for how we are going to reduce taxes, how we’re going to get the British economy going, and how we are going to find our way out of these difficult times,’’ said Truss, who has been foreign secretary for the past year.

Now, as the Tigers open the season tonight against ACC rival Georgia Tech in Atlanta, they are eager to return to a more customary level.“We’re going to get back to doing what we do. It’s that simple,” defensive end K.J. Henry vowed. “A lot of times, especially for myself, we knew what we capable of, but we were in our own way. There are a lot of good teams that we play every year that fed off of Clemson’sthat.” down season seemed even more pronounced because it plays in a league that doesn’t carry the same rep utation as the Southeastern Conference or Big Ten. “We aren’t given the respect we deserve,” Henry said. “Clemson finally has a hiccup year and it’s like everybody’s surprised that there’s a close game.” One of those close games came against Geor gia Tech. A late defensive stand preserved Clemson’s 14-8 victory and its seventh straight win in the series. The year before, the Tigers romped past the Yellow Jackets 73-7 in Atlanta. At Georgia Tech, the bar is set much lower than 10 wins.Three consecutive sea sons with just three wins apiece have put coach Geoff Collins on the hot seat.“We’re all tired of losing,” he said. “We’ve got a collective edge and a collective chip on our shoulder.”Given Georgia Tech’s brutal schedule, a .500 record might be out of reach.Clemson is one of three 10-win teams the Yellow Jackets must navigate in their first five games.

Shavers later faced Larry Holmes for the WBC heavy weight title in September 1979 in LasHolmesVegas. won the bout by TKO in the bout stopped in the 11th round. Shavers did knock Holmes to the canvas in the seventh round.Holmes had worked with Shav ers in Cleveland at an event run by promoter Don King. “He was one of the hardest punchers in boxing,” Holmes said of Shavers in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on FormerFriday.New York State Ath letic Commissioner Randy Gordon said Shavers always had time for the fans, whether it was signing autographs or exchanging a word or two. “He was one of the nicest guys in the world, until he got into the ring and tried to take your head off,” Gordon told The AP Friday. Shavers had surgery for a detached retina after the Holmes fight and was stopped by Randall “Tex” Cobb in the eighth round the following year. In 1982 he fought Joe Bugner, also on the comeback trail. Bugner was knocked down in the first, and was stopped by cuts in the second round. Shavers con tinued to fight professionally for several years, but never fought for a title again. He was named among the top-10 punchers in boxing history by The Ring and others. Before turning professional, he won the 1969 National AAU heavyweight title. Shavers was married to Laverne Payne. They had five daughters from their marriage together: Tamara, Cynthia, Catherine, Carla, and Amy. He also has four daughters from other relationships: Cath erine, Lisa, Natasha and Latonya. DEFENSIVEGETTING Collins is spending more time working with a defense that ranked near the bottom of the ACC in most categories. In particular, he knows the Yellow Jackets must generate more sacks and turnovers.

Clemson’s defensive front has claimed nicknames from the Marvel movie uni verse. For example, Justin Mascoll is going by “Dr. Strange.”Why?“It’sbecause strange things happen when I’m out there,” Mascoll said with a smile. He pointed to his batted pass in the Cheez-it Bowl win over Iowa State, which Tigers defensive back Mario Goodrich took back for a pick six.

Clemson, of course, is on an entirely different level. Another 10-win season simply won’t do.

NEW YORK (AP) — Coco Gauff raised a fist, then wagged her right index finger, responding to, and riling up even more, a loudlouder-loudest Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd that was standing and screaming. Gauff’s US Open oppo nent, Zhang Shuai, covered both ears with her hands to shield them from what she described later as a “Boom!” of sound. Gauff and her fans were reacting excitedly to quite a point, one in which the 18-year-old Floridian raced to her right for a defensive forehand, then changed directions to sprint and slide into a backhand that drew a netted volley from Zhang. Just four points later, Gauff was a quarterfi nalist at Flushing Meadows for the first time. Gauff, the French Open runner-up in June, came back in each set to beat China’s Zhang 7-5, 7-5 yesterday to become the youngest American to make it this far at the US Open since Melanie Oudin was 17 in 2009. “Here, I can’t hear myself scream. Makes me want to do it more. I think I’m feed ing off the momentum a lot. I enjoy it,” said No. 12 seed Gauff, who meets No. 17 Caroline Garcia of France on Tuesday. “New York is bringing out a side of me that I haven’t had since I was 15, so it’s nice.” Nick Kyrgios is play ing much better than he ever has at Flushing Mead ows, too, building off the momentum of his run to the Wimbledon final in July, and he eliminated defend ing champion and No. 1-ranked Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday night. The 23rd-seeded Kyrgios was up to some of his usual behaviour — warned for cursing, yelling at his guest box, playing to the crowd — but he also outplayed Medvedev in a high-quality match.“I’m just glad I’m finally able to show New York my talent,” said Kyrgios, never past the third round at the US Open until now. “I haven’t had too many great tripsHe’llhere.”play No. 27 seed Karen Khachanov on Tuesday, when the other’s men’s quarterfinal on the top half of the bracket is 2022 French Open runnerup Casper Ruud against 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Matteo openinghim.ersandRuudaftertheMedvedevBerrettini.willrelinquishtopspotintherankingstheUSOpen,withjoiningRafaelNadalCarlosAlcarazasplaywithachancetoreplaceAftertrailing5-4intheset,then5-3in

the second, which she was a point from losing, Gauff was buoyed by spectators who cheered her every point and chanted “Let’s go, Coco!” as the end neared. She improved to 4-0 in Ashe this year after having never previously won a match at the biggest arena in Grand Slam tennis. How loud was it? “It got so racuous in there that I got a headache. I had to take an Advil,” said Gauff’s father, Corey. “I kept pinching myself. I’m like, ‘My gosh, all of these people here for my daughter.’ You dream about this, but you never know if you’re going to realize that. She was pumping herself up and they responded to her. It sent chills up my spine.” Zhang, at 33 the oldest woman to reach the fourth round, said it was more noise than she’s ever heard at a Shematch.praised Gauff’s play, calling her “a superstar” and adding: “Everything is very good. She’s so much younger than me. Her energy is so much better. She’s faster. It’s great,” GarciaNonesaid.ofthe eight women in action Sunday had ever been past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows; only two have reached semifinals at any Grand Slam tourna ment: Gauff and No. 5 Ons Jabeur.Jabeur, a finalist at Wimbledon in July, was scheduled to meet No. 18 Veronika Kudermetova at night. In Gauff-Zhang, the whirring of the Ashe retractable roof being pulled shut accompanied the start of the second set because of showers that started soon after, and it took a while for the artificial lights to reach full strength. The match proceeded, even though it was rather dark — and quite humid — indoors. Zhang started getting a bit better of the back-andforth midway through the second set, and when she hit a backhand winner of her own, she broke to lead 5-3.Last year’s U.S. Open doubles champion — she and Sam Stosur beat Gauff and Caty McNally in the final — served to force a third set, and was a point away from getting there, but Gauff steeled herself and stood her ground. That set point was frit tered away when Zhang sent a backhand long. Gauff smacked — what else? — a down-the-line backhand winner for her third break point of that game, then delivered a good return to a corner that drew a long backhand to make it 5-4 and start a four-game, match-closing run. Everyone’s known how talented Gauff is for a while now. After all, at 15, she became the youngest quali fier in Wimbledon history in 2019, beat Venus Wil liams in the first round of the main draw and made it all the way to the fourth. There have been more steps along the way, more achievements — last month, she became the second-youngest doubles No. 1 in WTA history — and her ever-developing game — the most notable recent improvements were to her forehand and second serve — keeps carrying her closer to the top of the sin gles rankings and closer to a Grand Slam title. And at this point, having the full sport of more than 20,000 folks in Ashe doesn’t hurt,“She’seither.found a home there,” Dad said. “I hope she’s going to play there for the rest of the tournament.”

SIERRA NEVADA, Spain (AP) — Still feel ing stiff from his crash and facing the high est summit finish of the Spanish Vuelta, Remco Evenepoel held his ground Sunday to take a big step toward winning his first Grand Tour race. Evenepoel, who was injured after a crash on Thursday, fended off another challenge by three-time champion Primoz Roglic to keep the leader’s red jersey and a considerable gap to his main challengers. Roglic made a late attack on the final climb of the 15th stage but could only cut 15 seconds from Evenepoel’s overall lead.Thymen Arensman won the stage for his first Grand Tour victory, crossing the finish line safely ahead of EnricMas, Miguel Ángel López and Jay Vine. “It’s hard to believe, it really has to sink in,” said Arensman, a Dutch rider from team DSM. “I can’t believe it on the queen stage of the Vuelta. So, I’m really happy that it’s a rest day tomorrow and I actually lost almost noth ing. A good day for us. With the crash it was not so easy to handle, but the third week is a bit of another story. The climbs are not super super hard anymore.”Ridershave a rest day on Monday before a flat 16th stage that should allow the overall leaders to comfortably stay at the top.

LONDON (AP) — It might be time for Liverpool to start worrying about its slow start to the English PremierJurgenLeague.Klopp’s team dropped points for the fourth time in six games after an eventful 0-0 draw at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday, with Mohamed Salah hitting the post in stoppage time. Chelsea has VAR to thank for not being in a similar position. Thomas Tuchel’s team, having lost two of their previous three games, held on for a 2-1 victory over West Ham at Stamford Bridge after the visitor had an injurytime equalizer overturned by what Hammers man ager David Moyes called a “scandalous” and “rotten” decision.Chelsea already has two losses and a draw in the opening six games, while Liverpool has three draws and one loss, having needed a goal in the eighth minute of injury time to beat New castle in midweek. “It’s not the start we wanted,” Liverpool man ager Jurgen Klopp said. “It’s not a dream, it’s exactly 50% of the points available. But that’s the points we got, and let’s go from here. If we go through these really hard moments together we have a good chance to create better moments in theThefuture.”good news for Klopp is that Liverpool didn’t lose any more ground to defending champion Man chester City, which was held to 1-1 at Aston Villa despite another goal from Erling Haaland — the Norwegian striker’s 10th. FOR GERRARDVillamanager Steven Gerrard was under heavy pressure following three straight league losses, but a point against City could go a long way toward safe guarding his position. Gerrard went with a more defense-minded lineup than usual by leaving Philippe Coutinho and Emiliano Buendia on the bench, and the changes paid off. “I’ve had to tweak a few things and look at myself behind the scenes,” Ger rard said. “It’s not just about players, it’s what I can do better. REMEMBER that time, not so long ago, when there was a crisis at Manchester United? After four straight wins, it seems like a dim and dis tantThememory.latest sign that United is well on the road to recovery came yesterday with a 3-1 win over Arsenal, whose 100% start to the season came crashing to an end. There were still antiGlazer chants inside and outside Old Trafford — it feels like they are here to stay, whether the team wins or loses — but they are now accompanied by frequent and jubilant roars for goals. Two of them were scored in the second half by Marcus Rashford to sweep United to victory after Arsenal pulled it back to 1-1 through Bukayo Saka, but the opening goal felt the most Antony, significant.United’s latest big signing from Ajax for $95 million, marked his first match in English soccer with a goal from a curling, first-time finish in the 35th minute, crowning a perfor mance that featured a slew of jinks, feints and exagger ated stepovers that thrilled home fans. He came off in the 58th to a standing ovation to be replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo, who again had to settle for a starting spot on the bench. Since that humiliating 4-0 loss at Brentford that sparked a crisis and some doubts around the wisdom of hiring Erik ten Hag as manager, United has beaten Liverpool, Southampton, Leicester and now Arsenal, the league leader. After six games, United is only three points behind Arsenal and two behind Manchester City, the title favourite.Howquickly things have turned around.

There’s a strong chance Brendan Rodgers won’t be Leicester manager by the time the team plays its next game.Leicester was embar rassed in a 5-2 loss at Brighton, leaving Rodg ers’ team in last place on just one point from six games. It wasn’t just the defeat but the manner of the performance that will worry Rodgers, and more importantly Leicester’s owners. The defending was extremely soft as goals by Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard and Alexis Mac Allister -- via a penalty and a direct free kick -- along with an own-goal by Luke Thomas saw Brighton cruise to a victory that could have been even heavier. That’s 16 goals conceded by Leicester already and it seems neglectful for the club to have only signed one outfield player and a third-choice goalkeeper in the summer transfer market given the state of the squad. Rodgers even called out Leicester’s owners in midweek, saying he had “not had the help in the (transfer) market this team needed.”Scott Parker made a similar remark after Bournemouth’s recently 9-0 loss at Liverpool and was fired a few days later. Rodgers could yet be heading the same way after 3 1/2 years in charge.
