FREE National Move ment chairman Dr Duane Sands has called on govern ment to implement certain safety protocols for tour ism water operators in the aftermath of a fatal shark attack earlier this week. Dr Sands said tour opera tors should be equipped, for example, with tourniquets to stop the flow of blood, blood clotting powders and have a standard kit for emergencies. He said tour operators should also be trained to deal with the aftermath of shark attacks or other injuries that may occur on an excursion. His comments came after 58-year-old Caroline DiPlacido of Lake Erie, Pennsylvania died on Tues day after being attacked by a bull shark while snorkel ling with family near Green Cay.

Mr Cove told The Trib une the area of Green Cay is home to many turtles, hence why the site is fre quented by tour operators for snorkelling excursions.

THE owner of a local dive company has ques tioned if shark tagging for scientific research led to the presence of the marine animal in waters off Green Cay where a woman was fatallyStuartattacked.Cove, of Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas, spoke to this newspaper a day after an American woman died after a shark attack while snorkelling with family on Tuesday. The Tribune understands Seas The Day Bahamas is the tour company responsi ble for the excursion.

He said: “Shark attacks ever since (the movie) Jaws have elicited a dispropor tionate emotional response, okay. As rare as they are, they elicit an outsized response that reverber ates around the world. We have seen in Florida, Australia and other places an increase or a change in behaviour, but I don’t think we should exaggerate that, because the number of attacks basically do not bear out the view that we had in the middle of a crisis or“Thatemergency.said, being proac tive and being scientific and data driven makes an awful lot of sense and we have some“Thereexperts.isCandace Fields, by way of disclaimer, happens to be family of mine, but she is one of our local experts on shark behaviour. We can ask what possible good can come out of a horrible trag edy if we are able to make our excursions safer and more attractive and make The Bahamas a better, safer destination.”MsDiPlacido was a long time employee at Gannon University in the US, having served as a mar keting secretary and most recently, project coordi nator in community and government relations. “Along with her efforts to further the mission of Erie-GAINS and Our West Bayfront, Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon,” the univer sity chaplain, Rev Michael Kesicki said in a statement. “The news is devastating, and she will be missed. “We pray for Caroline as she crosses over to eternity. “All of us at Seas The Day are deeply saddened and shocked by the shark attack at Green Cay yester day (Tuesday). Please keep the family in your prayers,” the company said. After over 40 years in operation, Mr Cove said there are two catalysts which may have contrib uted to the incident.

from page one GREEN CAY, where Tuesday’s shark attack took place.

The American resident and her family were visit ing The Bahamas on their cruise trip and went on a local excursion when the tragedy happened.

Dr Sands, former health minister, offered condolences to Ms DiPlac ido’s family over her death, describing the incident as unfortunate. However, he said it also created an opportunity for the country to look at ways to better safeguard our visitors who partici pate in similar water-based activities.“Whenever we have a tragedy, it becomes impor tant to avoid or to minimise the inevitable - finger point ing and to ask whether there are potential oppor tunities to do some things differently to safeguard our guests and our local population and to make our destination that much more appealing,” he said. “While The Bahamas has had less than 100 shark attacks in recorded his tory and we have records going back as far as 1868, there is the impression that there have been a few more in recent years. We had at least two in 2019.” He said that over the last month, there have also been two reported shark attacks, including Tuesday’s fatal incident. In an effort to prevent fatalities should another shark attack occur, Dr Sands recommended several protocols and regu lations that could be put in place for operators in the water sport industry. He said: “We’ve already documented two shark attacks within the last month and a little boy injured and now this and so, you know certainly one of the opportunities we have is to ensure that tour operators are adequately equipped with tourniquet, hemostatic agents to stop bleeding so that if possible, they have a fighting chance to see like the ability to create a tourniquet to stop torrential bleeding from an injured limb can potentially make a lot of difference. “There are also commer cially available powders which when poured into a wound that can add to get ting the blood to clot and I would suggest that perhaps this is not an unreason able time to make available through the government and through the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the creation of a standard kit to be available in every single tour vessel that is on our waters. “And also, perhaps to look at training for per sons that offer these tours and locals who might wish to understand what they might do not just in the event of a shark attack, but in the event of a boating injury, laceration, etc, and I say this in the spirit of what might make this destination safer.”In2019, tourism officials were said to be discussing new protocols to implement after American Jordan Lindsey was killed by a shark during a snorkelling trip off Rose Island. How ever it is unclear if they were ever implemented and tourism officials could not be reached yesterday for comment.Askedwhether the oppo sition party had concerns about the incident affecting the nation’s tourism prod uct, the FNM chairman said the number of shark attacks does not show that “we are in the middle of a crisis” but as such does warrant serious concern.

He said: “There are a lot of turtles there. That’s where Atlantis releases all its young turtles, so it’s become very popular with the north side operators because you could go snorkelling with the turtles. Which of course is the favourite food of the tigerHeshark.”explained the huge population of turtles in the area serves as food for various shark species, hence why it could be presumed they frequent the area. In addition to the turtles on Green Cay, Mr Cove questioned if the incident is a result of the government permitting scientists to con duct research on sharks. “There is an outset that works with government and ministry officials should probably be contacted... they chum like hell in Nassau“TheyHarbour.setlong lines to capture the sharks, tag them, and measure them for scientific information and I think my personal opinion is that’s the reason why these sharks come in likeThethat.”tour operator sug gested that the government should intervene and imple ment various protocols to prevent this from happen ing“Iagain.think the government needs to stop giving permits, or when they give permits to the scientists make sure they do the science over an angle someplace far away from where there’s people swimming,” he told this newspaper yesterday. “Next thing you know, we’ll have a little kid eaten by a school of sharks. Then the government needs to step in, and say ‘listen, you can have a permit, but you have to be 20 miles away from any major swimming or populated areas,’” he added.Mr Cove also encour aged tour operators to put the necessary protocols in place, to ensure the safety of both their business and customers.“Iam very concerned when these things happen, because, you know, you have to respect the sharks and once you are interact ing with sharks, you have to put protocols in place. I believe we have all kinds of operators going over the Green Cay and they fish and they clean fish and they have the people on the water to see the turtles and that’s“Butgreat.you know, they’re shutting themselves down, because the government’s not going to tolerate that. The government can’t afford to have visitors being killed by sharks. I mean, that’s terrible press for the country.”Shortly after 2pm on Tuesday police received reports of a shark attack near Green Cay, which resulted in the death of an American woman. Press liaison officer Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said Green Cay is known for snorkelling excursions, however the beach has been temporarily closed by officials for such operations.Asimilar incident occurred in 2019, as a 21-year-old American woman died after she was savaged by sharks while swimming with her mother near Rose Island. • For more, see Business TAGGING TEAM LEAD TO SHARK’S PRESENCE IN AREA?’

THE lives and safety of many young students who walk to school daily are at risk due to the absence of crossing guards to assist them at busy causeways throughout Freeport. Since the recent reopen ing of schools, children have been left on their own at a number of busy causeways during peak morning and after school hours.School principals con cerned for their students’ safety are calling for the return of crossing guards in the Freeport area. The Tribune understands that crossing guards fall under the Road Traffic Depart ment, however, calls made there yesterday were not answered.Maurice Moore Primary School principal Rodney Bethel said he hopes that the situation is addressed soon.“It is for the safety of the children,” he said. “Last year we had a crossing guard at the school, but the Road Traffic Department has not assigned anyone since school reopened.”

Ocean debris kills nearly one million marine animals every single year. A grand total of 150 pounds of marine debris was collected, bagged and disposed of in bins for collec tion by Sanitation Services.

Gail Woon, Earthcare founder, said: “Earthcare ICC team leaders Rochelle Manchester, Tylea Man chester, Jeanette Austin and Gail Woon helped organise the volun teers to get ready for this extremely important worldwide annual event. All Earthcare volunteers worked very hard to see the beach cleaned up once again, collecting some sur prising items and more importantly reinforcing the fact that litter is a major environmental problem. “This decline that you see now is a direct result of the reduction of crude oil on the global market. If crude oil continues to decrease on the global market, then we should see our gas prices at the pump con tinue to decline.” Mr Bastian, who had previously pleaded for the government’s assistance to bring relief to both gas operators and consumers, said that talks with the government have been suspended for now. “All the talks with the government right now are on hold, until we work out some other things that we’re trying to figure out, but for now all the talks are on hold right now,” Mr Bastian said. Fuel prices have soared globally since Russia, the world’s third largest oil producer, invaded Ukraine in late February. In June, Mr Bastian told this newspaper that in an effort to cut back on costs, some fuel operators, including himself, had to reduce staff hours. And he warned that laying off staff would be unavoidable if the situation did not improve soon. That same month, Rubis Bahamas announced a reduction of fuel costs from $7.27 per gallon to $6.89 per gallon. These comments came after the Petro leum Dealers Association and its members had two “successful” meetings with Prime Minister Philip Davis and his economic team, including Senator Michael Halkitis, minister of economic affairs, and Simon Wilson, the Ministry of Finance’s financial secretary in April, preceding the 20222023 Budget. Mr Bastian had said that this had moved dealers “closer to the goal posts” on some of the demands of fuel operators.Additionally, the Bahamas Unified Bus Drivers Union had also expressed concerns of the cost of fuel making it hard for drivers to sustain a decent living while balancing fuel expenses.Earlier this week, the Inter-American Development Bank made predictions that The Bahamas would invest approximately up to $64.5m in oil-based thermal plants by 2030. So the energy demand will grow by 6.4 percent in the next eight years. These findings were compiled in a recent report released by IDB on Tuesday called The Energy Route of Latin America and the Caribbean.

When contacted for comments, Chief Coun cillor Frazette Gibson said that the Road Traf fic Department assumed responsibility for salary payments of crossing guards in She2020.said she has also expressed her concerns to the Road Traffic Depart ment and other government officials regarding the absence of the crossing guards on the streets. “In 2020, the City of Free port Council petitioned the former government at the time to take on the salaries of crossing guards because our budget had been cut severely each year, and it would have been a strain on ourShebudget.“explained that as the crossing guards were already supervised by the Road Traffic Department, the council had asked the government to have the RTD take them on. “They did, and this year makes it retroactive from 2020. However, with the coming of the reopening of school, l contacted the Deputy Controller Kevin Mortimer asking and reminding him that the crossing guard need to be on the streets. I was then informed that they would not be returning to the streets, and that was shock ing because had I known, we would have kept them,” Ms Gibson said. There were 13 crossing guards in total assigned in the Freeport area. Ms Gibson said only one retiree crossing guard is currently assigned on Coral Road roundabout assisting students at the Freeport Primary and Walter Parker Primary Schools. She said the council tried meeting with the admin istrator for the City of Freeport Council to assist with addressing the situa tion, but was unsuccessful. Mrs Gibson said the council meets next Tuesday and will discuss the matter then.“With our very limited budget, the council will go back to the table again for our meeting so we can hire crossing guards for strategic locations, and we are pray ing and hoping that nothing happens to our children in the“Weinterim.may not be able to hire all, but we will hire some for strategic locations to make sure students are safe.”According to Ms Gibson, one crossing guard was previously assigned at Maurice Moore, at Bishop Michael Eldon School, one at Coral Road and one at Coral Gardens for stu dents at Freeport Primary and Walter Parker Pri mary Schools; one at the Jack Junior High School, and at Caribbean Electric and Kelly’s for students from the Back of Town Subdivision.

THE president of Aba co’s Chamber of Commerce is confident Prime Minister Phillip “Brave” Davis is committed to rebuilding the island.During a Hurricane Dorian memorial service on the island last week, Mr Davis promised to do more to help residents who are still struggling three years after the storm. He noted that residents will soon be able to see and feel the results of the work being done, especially relating to the government’s housing programme.Inaninterview with The Tribune, Daphne Degreg ory-Miaoulis said the prime minister’s displeasure of the current state of Abaco reflects the sentiments of Abaconians.“I’mhappy that he is not pleased, because that reflects the sentiments of the Abaco residents as well. We are not pleased with where we are at this stage. We hope that he will consider extending the (special economic recov ery zone) order as a way of continuing to assist the rebuild. I have no doubt that, as he is committed to the rebuild, that he will move forward with it,” she said.Additionally, the housing crisis in Abaco has been a major issue since Hurricane Dorian in 2019 due to the massive number of homes that were livingdefinitelyplex,atdomesofforbecausenitelynecessary.saidAbacobuildthatDavisMinisterTransportdestroyed.andHousingJoBethColeby-recentlyrevealedherministryplanstosome300homesintooffsetthis.MsDegregory-MiaoulisthehousinginitiativeisShecontinued:“Itisdefiverymuchneeded,thecivilservantsthemostpart,manythemarestilllivinginthataresituatedthegovernmentcomwhich,asyouknow,isnotcomfortableconditionsforthem to have to work in or live in, I should say. “The member of Par liament for the south, Mr John Pinder, and Mr Cor nish from the north, in a meeting with the Abaco chamber earlier in the year, they did outline that the government was planning to, you know, go ahead with this rebuild.” When asked what other efforts the government can make to assist Abaco, she said there could be more focus on the skilled labour shortage and improvement of Sheutilities.also said: “It all affects our residents and tourist industry. Speaking on the chal lenges she faced post Dorian, the survivor detailed her struggle to find shelter and a place to live after her return to the island following the storm’s passage.“Iwas renting before the storm and lost everything there and when I came back, they told me that I couldn’t get no dome and no trailer and my brother who is deceased now, he said his house was full and I said Lord, where am I going to find to live? “I was even crying with my suitcase that day because I didn’t know where I was going and my aunty told me to why not go in the domes that was not finished and when I went to one dome, the people cursed me out and treat me so bad so I came out of that dome.“And I went to another and it kept shaking and I was wondering if someone been in it. When I opened the door, it was dirty and not finished so I said ‘Lord, you want me to go in this?’ because I didn’t have no key for that door and then I found the key and checked the door and stayed in the dome with no light and water for two years.” Ms McIntosh described her living conditions in the dome as “rough,” citing structuralHowever, issues.she said her situation did not stop her from having faith that things would get better for her and her family soon. “When they said we had to move out of the domes, I said ‘Lord when am I going’ because I have no place to live and I have no family member to turn to and nobody to go to. I had me and my granddaughter and my great grand who is nine-months-old and I said ‘where are we going?’” Weeks later, Ms McIn tosh got her answer. “One of the guys who we was in the meeting when they said ‘I have two trailers that are supposed to be empty and you can get one’,” she added, “and in no minutes time, the lady said she was moving out of the trailers and she said if anyone need a trailer she can get that and it was like victory when I saw light, running water, fridge and I saw two beds to sleep in. I said God this is my time to shine, from the dome to the trailer.”Butunbeknownst to the Dorian survivor, there was more good news to come. “(Last week) they called and they come to my job looking for me and I didn’t know nothing because I filled out a housing appli cation and they told me to bring a job letter and that was almost a year and that was it,” she said. “I heard nothing else (since then), but when they called me to meet them by the groundbreaking where they do the house at 1.45 and I reached there and the lady said ‘surprise, sur prise’, you get a home and I said ‘I get a home’ and I said ‘Jesus, this got to be a joke’ and this can’t be real.” Hurricane Dorian hit Abaco on September 1, 2019 as a Category 5 hur ricane before barreling toward Grand Bahama. The storm left thousands of homes either destroyed or damaged and hundreds of residents displaced. To assist with rebuilding efforts, the Minnis admin istration spent more than $6m on nearly 200 domes that were supposed to be used as temporary housing for Abaco and Grand Bahama residents after Hurricane Dorian. The putative scientists who work in media all prognosticated that there would be an astronomical rise in COVID-19 cases for those countries like Jamaica, Grenada, among others in the region that dropped all COVID-19 entry requirements and relaxed the protocols for their citizens. Have you seen or heard of hospi tals bursting at the seams to contain COVID-19 patients in these countries? Unquestionably, we would have heard especially from Jamaica, which is ranked in the top 15 for press freedom.Thepundits would have these countries that put “dollars and cents” over their citizens’ health and wellbeing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Main stream media would not let it rest.Should I even mention that Haiti, which has less than two percent of its pop ulation fully vaccinated, is not struggling to deal with COVID-19?That Machiavellian lie that they have fed us about vaccination helps to minimise the number of hospitalisations is also disingenuous. Do you remember hearing, “The only pandemic we have is the pandemic of the unvac cinated?” When was the last time you have heard thatWhatstatement?nobody is telling us is that what we are actually having now is a pandemic of the vaccinated. There are more vaccinated people being hospitalised now than unvaccinated. They have wittingly stopped announc ing confirmed cases and hospitalisations because they would have to break down those hospitalised into the vaccinated and unvaccinated and, indubi tably, they would have no grounds to stand on when the vaccinated column is higher.Iimplore the competent authorities to fly the gate on mask wearing and let those who are still scared keep their faces shackled. But do not punish us any longer.Letus continue to enjoy the New Day before it becomes another day.

The heat wave that started more than a week ago has been hotter and longer than any other in the state, and it put unprecedented strain on power supplies. That prompted Newsom to plead with people to use less power to avoid rolling blackouts — a practice that involves cut ting some people’s power to save energy so the lights can stay on for everyone else. The effort worked, but meeting the state’s heightened energy demand also required activating generators fueled by natural gas, which is still a major part of the state’s power picture. The Democratic governor’s calls for conservation also drew criticism about new state policies govern ing electric vehicles and other measures that will only increase energy demand. Newsom said the “pretty extreme” circumstances required the state to turn to more natural gas as a backup supply. “We all want to accelerate the elimina tion of the gas, but it’s a sober reminder of reality,” he said. Tuesday’s demand for 52,000 meg awatts set a record, as triple-digit temperatures blanketed much of the state. Sacramento hit a record high of 116 degrees (47 degrees Celsius), and normally cooler places like San Francisco and San Diego also reached sizzlingDemandtemperatures.willonlyclimb in the years ahead. By 2045, when the state is man dated to get all of its electricity from non-carbon or renewable sources, demand is expected to be as high as 78,000 megawatts due to more electric home appliances and cars on the road, according California Energy Commis sionToestimates.meetthat demand, both the gov ernment and major utilities like Pacific Gas & Electric are working to scale up renewable sources such as solar and wind power, as well as large-scale bat teries that can store that power for use at night. The California Public Utilities Commission last year ordered utilities to procure enough additional power for 2.5 million homes by 2026. Newsom just signed legislation aimed at keeping the state’s last nuclear plant open for five years beyond its planned 2025 closure, and he suggested Wednes day that the plant could run even longer if needed.Thesun is typically the state’s biggest power source during the day. But as the hot weather arrived, natural gas sur passed renewables for more time over the past week, according to the Cali fornia Independent System Operator, which is responsible for managing and maintaining reliability on the state’s power grid. Gas was the primary energy source all day on Tuesday — the expected peak of the brutal Meanwhile, temperatures.onMonday the state for the first time turned on four gas-pow ered generators to add more supply, enough to power 120,000 homes. It planned to rely on some diesel-powered generators as well. But some of the state’s fossil-fuel plants have their own reliability prob lems. Several power plants, including aging gas-fired ones along California’s coast, partially broke down or produced less energy than planned, according to theFourISO.of the plants, which suck up ocean water to cool down their equip ment, were slated to close in 2020, but the state has continually extended their lives to help stabilise the power supply. They now plan to stay open until at least 2023, but they could last even longer under leg islation Newsom signed in June. If the state wants to keep the old coastal gas-powered plants online beyond 2023, it needs to give the companies that own them more certainty about the future so they can decide whether to spend money to maintain them, said Siva Gunda, vice chairman of the California Energy Com mission, the state’s energy planning agency.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2021, came as a relief to many as they considered the dra conian measures used by the People’s Time admin istration to control the COVID-19 pandemic too harsh and unnecessary.

Fly the gate on wearingmask letters@tribunemedia.net

The New Day govern ment promised an end to the nightly curfews, which ended in November and also granted more freedom with a new set of emer gencyThereorders.was much panic when the New Day admin istration did not introduce any measures for the Yuletide season to avert a possible spike in COVID cases. Although many pos tulated that the numbers would go through the roof due to the lack of measures, we only saw a marginal increase in the number of confirmed cases, which was not unmanageable by the healthcare system. I guess after having gone through the former admin istration nobody wanted a return of the hang man like measures which drastically curtailed our freedom, so citizens and residents alike behaved in an orderly manner to keep the confirmed cases to a manageable number. Earlier this year, we rolled out the red carpet with much fanfare and celebration to welcome some members of the Brit ish Royal Family. We all witnessed the return of Jun kanoo on Bay Street. Who could have missed the very few people wearing masks? With this practically mask-less celebration on “Bay”, we thought that more relaxation would have been announced shortly after. Well, yes, more relaxation came sev eral weeks later, but only after our neighbour to the north dropped testing to enter their country for vac cinated individuals did we do the same a week later. Is this a mere coincidence or is The Bahamas taking orders from someone unbe knownst to the general populace?Whydid the New Day government punish us by letting us go through this blistering summer still shackled by a face mask? My summer was partially great as I got to enjoy a whole month of breathing and functioning without a mask for a whole month, in another country may I add. I did not remember how exhilarating the freedom to be maskless was until I got to enjoy it again after some two and half years. On my return home, I was very disillusioned to learn that we still had to wear masks. The many tourists who were on the flight were befuddled by the “strange” announce ment from the captain that everyone would need a mask to exit the plane. You could see the stupor on their faces as most of the ones in my immediate vicin ity had no masks and were panicking since their Baha mian dream vacation was about to come to an abrupt end even before it started.

Where is the logical rea soning and substantive scientific evidence to per suade the unvaccinated to take the jab? Do not be fooled by the national aver age being a D, because not everyone is cognitively lazy; many of us are cerebral.

EDITOR, The Tribune. THE shark mauling of a visitor off Green Cay is hor rific and our hearts go out to the family caught in this nightmare.Iknowmany of the reefs off Green Cay and Rose Island like the back of my hand, having fished and snorkeled them for 45 years without a single shark issue. Many times, I served as designated boat driver to fishermen who speared fish and crawfish from these reefs.Itwas rare to see a shark and when you did, they only became agitated if a live fish was flailing on a spear. The diver dropped the spear and got on the boat, leaving the shark to go after theItfish.was a time when fisher men and dive and charter boat operators understood and respected their envi ronment and behaved responsibly.Inrecent years, there has been an explosion of boat traffic in the Green Cay/ Rose Island area. Visiting mega yachts, charter boats and a genera tion of locals with newfound wealth, the latter who don’t seem to know the rules – let alone the etiquette – of the sea. There are now several restaurants and bars on Rose Island and it’s not unusual for overloaded gofast boats to zoom within 200 feet of the island’s shoreline (illegal), espe cially on weekends, to the danger of swimmers. Where do the visiting mega yachts dispose of their garbage? Do people from the yachts and char ter boats throw bloody fish offal in the water after cleaning fish? I think some of them do and this is a sure way to attract sharks. Do any of the charter boats chum to attract fish and sharks? What are they feeding the turtles with? I have watched many visitors snorkeling, flapping around in the sea, send ing out signals they are fish in distress, a sure way to attract sharks. Are charter boat cap tains trained in first aid and do they have first aid kits aboard their boats (not that this would have helped in this situation)? Do they have liability insurance? How long did it take for the authorities to respond to the distress call? Which charter boat was the shark attack victim on? I am not for one moment suggesting the operator was behaving irresponsibly; rather, he or she may well be a professional who is a victim of other people’s actions or simply a freak accident. These are important questions considering the growing number of shark attacks in the area reported in recent years. Like the roads of New Providence, Rose Island and Green Cay have become a free for all – a clash between traditional boaters trying to enjoy the quiet and beauty of the islands, the uncouth on powerful overloaded boats, mega yachts and entrepre neurs competing for the tourist dollar.

I put it to you that those who wanted to take the COVID-19 shot have already done so. I am really dispirited whenever I hear the adver tisement for vaccine. Certainly, you have heard the same advertisement on social media and the air waves. Are we supposed to take the vaccine just for travel? If so, you might as well tell me to take the vac cine and be carted off to the plantation just like what they did to our forefathers.

“Everything has to be moved forward at full throttle” with the “ambitious aim” that cleaner energy sources make up most of the state’s power reserves, he said. The intensity of the heat wave only emphasises the need for California to move away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible, he said. The grid challenges also provided plenty of fodder for Newsom’s political critics. The state recently adopted new regulations aimed at ending the sale of most new gas-powered cars in the state by 2035. But during the heat wave, offi cials also urged people not to charge cars or use other large appliances at night. “Gavin Newsom — You have to buy an electric car. Also Gavin Newsom — But you can’t charge it,” Republican state Sen. Melissa Melendez tweeted Tuesday evening after the state sent out an emergency wireless alert urging people to reduce power use.

And do not tell me that we are still trying for herd immunity – that elusive LIE! The leader of the New Day administration, whilst he was in opposition, kept saying there was no sci entific evidence to prove that curfews help to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Moreover, “health work ers and community outreach workers” must be trained to identify symptoms and to provide their patients with correct information as well as high quality respectful care. Director of Health Emer gencies Dr Ciro Ugarte suggested what healthcare workers could do as well. “They must be alert to identify those cases that may come with.... symptoms, but a proper interview may identify a contact, close contact with somebody who may have monkeypox. After being caught, authorities found a homemade Indian hemp cigarette (1 gram) on the accused, to which he said “I forgot that was there.” Police further uncovered more drugs in the same bushy area from which Louis had fled under an old mattress in a white and yellow container. This container held 15 green mini Ziplock bags all con taining marijuana that had a collective weight of 20 grams. The accused denied custody of this set of drugs during his police interview, stating that they belonged to a man named “John” who was the person who intended to sell the drugs. A PAN AMERICAN Health Organization (PAHO) official revealed batches of monkeypox vac cines are on the way for countries as part of their revolving fund. Dr Marcos Espinal, PAHO’s interim assistant director, gave the update yesterday during the organ isation’s press briefing while answering a question on when The Bahamas will receive the monkeypox vaccine.“AsI said, we will expect that the countries that have committed to purchase the vaccines through (the) PAHO revolving fund are expected to receive part of their vaccines in September, where we expect to have the first batch from Bavar ian Nordic. There will be a second batch in Novem ber and the third, another one in December. So (The) Bahamas, I can confirm, requested the vaccines and has signed up all the docu ments,” he explained. PAHO director Dr Carissa Etienne stated monkeypox was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organiza tion (WHO) in July and the region is now home to the “highest burden of monk eypox cases worldwide”. She said: ““As of Sep tember 6, over 30,000 monkeypox cases have been reported in the Americas, with most cases concentrated in the United States of America, Brazil, Peru, and Canada. Thus far, most confirmed cases are among men who have sex with men. Although at least 145 cases have been reported in women and 54 cases among people under the age of 18. So far, four monkeypox-related deaths have been reported in Brazil, Cuba and Ecuador. “During an August special session of the PAHO directing (council), member states requested support in obtaining access to the monkey pox vac cine. Since then, PAHO’s revolving fund for vaccines secured doses with Bavar ian Nordic - making ours the first WHO region to make monkeypox vaccines available to member states but doses remain limited. So PAHO has issued rec ommendations to member states to prioritise available doses for high-risk groups.” The director mentioned that with vaccines in short supply and with no effective treatment for monkeypox, countries should intensify efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in the region and “we have the means to slow down this virus”. Effective communica tion is an area on which she spoke at length.

“Now, we live an epochal period. The historic chal lenge for leaders is to manage the crisis while building the future. With the ongoing war in Ukraine and in the after math of the worst phases of the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, the United Kingdom is beset by a maelstrom of interlock ing crises, made even more complex by Brexit and long-term structural economic issues bedevil ing Britain. This includes national productivity.

and with the US and the global economy facing an eye-watering set of eco nomic challenges. He had to govern in the aftermath of an attempted coup just weeks before his inauguration and amidst the continuing fallout from the killing of George Floyd. He has had to lead the West in confronting Russia over the war with Ukraine.

MANAGING A CRISIS WHILE BUILDING THE FUTURE

Prime Minister Truss faces a number of crises that will test her mettle. The immediate crisis has to do with crippling energy costs for consumers and businesses, with Fall on the horizon and winter fast approaching. Britain is also facing double digit inflation that continues to mount, with no immediate end in sight. In an interview with veteran broadcaster and political analysts Andrew Marr, former Conservative Leader, Sir Iain Duncan Smith, warned the fractious and disunited Tories of the moment and of the looming political crisis for the party, which has been in office since 2010. Sir Iain noted that Prime Minister Truss was facing “almost the biggest set of troubles that any govern ment has faced”. He further observed: “It reminds me a bit of Mrs Thatcher, but Mrs Thatcher had five years.”

PLANS Biden was decisively helped by a Democratic majority in Congress, which he knew might only last for two years. Biden under stood the moment. He had a number of plans and ideas. He appointed a good cabinet and excellent White House advisors. A practitioner and student of history, he understood how Washing ton and the Congress work, paying attention to policy and political detail. Though his communications have not always been the best, he kept his eyes on his core goals. When the chattering classes and pundits were relentlessly spinning a nar rative of failure, he was cutting policy deals where he could, and cajoling, enticing and jawboning cer tain senators to help pass historicBidenlegislation.andthe Demo crats seized on the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade to significant political effect.InPhiladelphia last week, he baited Donald Trump, while trying to lure inde pendents and to rally his base. Writing this week in The Atlantic, David Frum, who served as a speech writer for George W Bush, observed: “Biden came to Philadelphia to deliver a wound to Trump’s bound less yet fragile ego. Trump obliged with a monstrously self-involved meltdown 48 hours later. And now his party has nowhere to hide. Trump has overwritten his name on every Republican line of every ballot in 2022. “Biden dangled the bait. Trump took it — and put his whole party on the hook with him. Republican lead ers are left with little choice but to pretend to like it.” And the 79-year-old experienced politician, who has weathered many storms during his life, has demonstrated a suite of characteristics as he man aged a barrage of crises while attempting to build a better future. He has evinced extraor dinary focus, pragmatism, steeliness, resilience and an ability to handle multiple crises simultaneously. His, like others, has not been a perfect government. But he has demonstrated generally goodThegovernance.Democrats are likely to lose the House of Rep resentatives, as is typical during midterm elections. But a revived party may hold on to the Senate, espe cially because of extremist candidates running for the Republicans in several states. What has Biden achieved in two years, turning crises into long-term achieve ments? He managed the COVID-19 crisis, ensuring many more Americans had vaccines. He passed a farreaching economic recovery plan that stabilised the US economy, while lower ing child poverty rates and helping to reduce unem ployment. Biden got passed and signed historic climate change and infrastructure legislation that many had been yearning for. The Inflation Reduction Act, the American Rescue Plan and his infrastruc ture package are going to help generations of Ameri cans. He also capped and reduced certain lifesaving prescription drug costs. Power will reveal Truss’s character: strengths, weak nesses, latent positive and negative traits and other characterological features. Her predecessor, Boris Johnson, helped secure an impressive general election victory for the Tories, espe cially after Jeremy Corbyn drove Labour too far left. The pandemic and the war in Ukraine provided John son the opportunity to demonstrate his ability to lead during unprecedented modern crises. There were some slug gishness and missteps in the early days of the pandemic. Still, Johnson successfully led the country in the devel opment of a vaccine, in the roll-out of vaccines and in other aspects of the pan demic. He provided stellar and consistent leadership in confronting the Russian war on ThoughUkraine.he had out sized skills that helped him to meet these chal lenges, Johnson also had outsized characteristics and pathologies, including his pathological lying, that eventually felled him despite having two more years of an electoral mandate.

It wasn’t artful, but she did get her message across.Inthe wake of the trag edy, a community and venue remain shaken. They were at the epicenter of the global news cycle for Andy Warhol’s “15 min utes of fame.” But what now? Has the placid, open nature of the venue been forever sullied and perhaps destroyed? What is the appropriate mix of security and freedom now? How to make people feel safer, be safer, and yet no less free? These are rapidly becoming existential ques tions, and not just for an isolated venue in New York State. The U.S. more generally is experiencing an epidemic of criminal and at least threatened political violence. Nearly every news cycle brings with it new reports about mass shootings all across the country. Democrats reflexively decry the per vasive, lethal effect of largely unregulated gun sales. Republicans remind us that “guns don’t kill people, people do,” and urge more law enforce ment attention to those with mental disorders. “IT was totally sur real,” Andy said. “There is absolutely nothing that prepares you for something like that. It was as though time stopped, frozen in a snapshot of horror. I was sitting toward the top of the amphitheater bowl, so I was nearly 100 yards away from the stage. At first, I was just dazed, wit nessing what was unfolding on stage. So was everyone around me.” “I was watching on my computer via a livestream,” his wife Chris said. “I thought at first that it was some kind of stunt. My mind simply refused to accept and process that someone’s life was actually at risk in this bizarre situ ation that was unfolding in real time. I guess I’m still kind of in shock over it all.”“I was late for the event,” Laura recalled, “so I hopped on my bike to get over to the venue and not miss too much of the speech. But then the strangest thing happened. My watch told me I had missed the introduction and that the lecture was about to begin. But crowds were streaming along the street, away from the venue. And no one was talking, or on their phone, or doing anything, really. They were just walking along, marching, almost like zombies. I didn’t see any emotion on anyone’s face. Then I found out what had happened.” What happened, about a month ago on the stage at a venue in Western New York State where Frank lyn Roosevelt and Bill Clinton have spoken, was the savage and shocking knife attack on India-born author Salman Rush die, 75, in front of about 2,500 stunned onlookers as Rushdie was preparing to deliver a speech. Rush die is an author and for decades a public person ality both in full view and in fearful hiding due to a religious death warrant imposed on him by the theocratic leader of Iran. The fatwa was issued after the 1988 publication of Rushdie’s fourth book, Satanic Verses, which was regarded by many Mus lims as sacrilegious in its depiction of the prophet Mohammed. Once mar ried to one of the world’s most beautiful and photo graphed women, Rushdie has lived an often-glamor ous life as the result of his fame.In fact, Rushdie’s dis tinctly unprepossessing outward appearance has proven to be no impedi ment to a playboy’s lifestyle. He has, over the years, been reportedly involved with some of the world’s most beautiful women.“It’sstrange, given that I’ve been married four times, but I actually don’t think marriage is neces sary,” he was quoted as saying after the fourth marriage.“Girlslike it, especially if they’ve never been mar ried before. It’s the dress. Girls want a beautiful wed ding. They don’t want a marriage. If only you could have weddings without marriages.”Inrecent months, the New York Times has reported that Rushdie has eschewed the personal security that he and his sponsors had insisted upon for many years after the Iranian bounty was placed on his head. Out and about in the New York area, he had proclaimed that he was “starting to live my life as a free man again.” On August 12, he was stabbed over a dozen times by a 25-year-old from New Jersey who subse quently revealed that he was “impressed by Iran” before pleading not guilty to an attempted murder witnessed by literally thou sands of onlookers. No bail was allowed for this young zealot.Asa “free” man, Rush die suffered grievous injuries and was lucky to survive the attack. He is likely to lose one eye, at least part of his liver, and likely other infirmities in the aftermath of his ordeal. For the record, the Ira nian government denied any role in the assault on Rushdie.“Regarding the attack on Salman Rushdie, we do not consider anyone other than (Rushdie) and his supporters worthy of blame or even condem nation,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said in a televised news confer ence three days after the incident.Iranian officials “cat egorically and seriously deny any connection of the assailant with Iran,” Kanaani said, in a press release from Iranian state media. “We have not seen anything else about the individual that carried out this act other than what we’ve seen from Ameri can media. We deny any connection of the assailant withOverIran.”the past month, the curtain of discreet secrecy has been drawn around Rushdie and his medical condition though according to press reports, he continues to regain strength and is clearly expected to survive his attacker’s assault, albeit with severe physical impairments.Shortlyafter 10:30 a.m. on August 12, Rushdie, an associate who was prepar ing to conduct an interview with him, and two officials from the venue were on stage. Despite the pres ence in the vicinity of the amphitheater where the talk was planned of locally engaged security staff and a local policeman, there was no security presence by the entrance to the stage. The attacker suddenly and nimbly leapt onto the stage and rushed Rushdie. In only a few seconds he was able to stab the author 15 times, including in the eye, neck and torso. Press reports later indicated that Rushdie had used his arms to defend himself, and sus tained numerous serious injuries in doing so. No one else on stage was seriously injured; only one person sustained a minor cut. SHELLING RESUMES NEAR UKRAINE NUCLEAR PLANT DESPITE RISKS

EPA leader: Jackson needs ‘fair share’ of money to fix water

Russian forces fired rock ets and heavy artillery on the city of Nikopol, on the opposite bank of the Dnie per River from Europe’s largest nuclear plant, regional Gov Valentyn Reznichenko said. “There are fires, black outs and other things at the (plant) that force us to pre pare the local population for the consequences of the nuclear danger,” Reznichenko said. Officials in recent days have distrib uted iodine pills to residents to help protect them in the event of a radiation leak. In Enerhodar, where the power plant is located, Dmytro Orlov, the preoccupation mayor, reported the city had come under Russian attack for a second time yesterday and was without power. “Employ ees of communal and other services simply do not have time to complete emer gency and restoration work, as another shelling reduces their work to zero,” he said on the Telegram messaging app.The Russian side blamed the Ukrainians. Vladimir Rogov, head of the Rus sia-installed Enerhodar administration, said on Tel egram that heavy Ukrainian fighting had caused the city’s blackout, and Russia’s Defence Ministry blamed the outage on a Ukrain ian attack on a power substation.Russian rockets yesterday hit Mala Tok machka 55 miles northeast of Enerhodar, killing three people and injuring five, Zaporizhzhia regional Gov Oleksandr Starukh reported. It’snot possible to inde pendently reconcile the conflicting reports of the fighting, which has caused international alarm.

FORMER President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, returned to the White House yesterday, unveiling official por traits with a modern vibe in an event that set humor and nostal gia over his presidency against the current harsh political talk about the survival of democracy. While her husband cracked a few jokes about his gray hair, big ears and clothes in his portrait, Mrs Obama said the occasion for her was more about the promise of America for people like“Barackherself. and Michelle, welcome home,” declared Presi dent Joe Biden as the gathering cheered.Biden, who was Obama’s vice president, praised his former boss’ leadership on health care, the economy and immigration and said nothing could have pre pared him any better for being president than serving with Obama for those eight years. “It was always about doing what was right,” he said. The portrait of Obama, America’s 44th and first Black president, doesn’t look like any of his predecessors, nor does Michelle Obama’s look like any of the women who filled the role beforeObamaher. stands expression less against a white background, wearing a black suit and gray tie in the portrait by Robert McCurdy that looks more like a large photograph than an oil-oncanvas portrait. She chose artist Sharon Sprung for herScoresportrait.of former members of Obama’s administration were on hand for the big reveal. Obama noted that some of them in the East Room audi ence had started families in the intervening years and he feigned disappointment “that I haven’t heard of anyone naming a kid Barack or Michelle”. He thanked McCurdy for his work, joking that the artist, who is known for his paintings of public figures from Nelson Mandela to the Dalai Lama, had ignored his pleas for fewer gray hairs and smaller ears. “He also talked me out of wearing a tan suit, by the way,” Obama quipped, referring to a widely panned appearance as president in an unflattering suit. Obama went on to say his wife was the “best thing about living in the White House,” and he thanked Sprung for “capturing everything I love about Michelle, her grace, her intelligence - and the fact that she’s fine”. Michelle Obama, when it was her turn, laughingly opened by saying she had to thank her hus band for “such spicy remarks.” To which he retorted, by way of explanation, “I’m not running again.” Then the former first lady turned serious, drawing a con nection between unveiling the portraits and America’s prom ise for people with backgrounds like her own, a daughter of working-class parents from the South Side of Chicago. “For me this day is not just about what has happened,” she said. “It’s also about what could happen, because a girl like me, she was never supposed to be up there next to Jacqueline Ken nedy and Dolley Madison. She wasn’t supposed to live in this house, and she wasn’t supposed to serve as first lady.” Mrs Obama said the unveiling of the portraits was a “reminder that there’s a place for everyone in this country”.

THE HEAD of the US Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday that he wants Mississippi’s capital city to receive “its fair share” of federal money to repair a troubled water system that left homes and businesses without running water for several days. Even with water flow ing from taps and people again able to flush toilets this week, Jackson lacks safe drinking water. The city of 150,000 is in the sixth week of a boil-water advi sory from the state health department because of concerns that low pressure could allow contaminants into the water. EPA administrator Michael Regan was in Jack son to meet with residents and state and local elected officials Wednesday. He touted the $1 trillion fed eral infrastructure law that President Joe Biden signed in MississippiNovember. is set to receive more than $4 bil lion from the law, with most of the money designated for highways and bridges, the White House said. The state’s allocation includes $429m over five years to improve water systems.

Other members of Mis sissippi’s congressional delegation also participated in meetings with them about short-term and longterm solutions for the city’s water“Weproblems.doknow that will require all of us working together to cut through the bureaucracy,” Regan said during a news conference at Jackson State University. Thompson pointed out during the community meeting that Regan is from North Carolina, which also has a large Black population.“Heunderstands the challenges, especially (for) communities of color,” said Thompson, the only black member of Mississippi’s congressional delegation.

Jackson’s water system has been fragile for years, with officials warning that widespread loss of ser vice was possible. A cold snap in 2021 froze pipes and some water treatment equipment, leaving tens of thousands of people with out running water. Similar problems happened again early this year, on a smaller scale. The EPA also told Jackson months ago that its water system violates the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

— Remco Evenepoel safely kept his Spanish Vuelta lead yesterday after threetime defending champion Primoz Roglic withdrew ahead of the 17th stage because of Rigobertoinjuries.Urán, the 35-year-old Colombian from team EF EducationEasyPost, prevailed on the final climb to win the stage and complete his treble of Grand Tour victories after previous stage triumphs in the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. “I had been chasing it for many years,” Urán said. “When you already have victories in the Giro and in the Tour, and now in La Vuelta, as a rider for threeweek events, it gives me a lot of happiness. Today is a very special day for me.” He crossed the line two seconds ahead of Quentin Pacher and Jesús Herrada. Marc Soler was 15 seconds back in fourth place. Roglic didn’t start after not recovering from his injuries sustained Tues day in a crash 75 metres (82 yards) from the finish line while going for the victory in the 16th stage. The Slovenian from team Jumbo-Visma was seeking an unprecedented fourth straight Vuelta title. Evenepoel finished in the group of riders who crossed the line five minutes behind Urán. The Belgian cyclist from team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl maintained a lead of more than two min utes over Enric Mas of team Movistar. Juan Ayuso was nearly five minutes back in third place. “I think the race is as hard to control as it was with Primoz,” Evenepoel said. “But of course, on a finish like this, Primoz is a really explosive guy. THE ninth meeting between Jonquel Jones’ Connecticut Sun and Chi cago Sky will determine which team will advance to the WNBA Finals and which team will see its 2022 season come to an end. The Sky will host a win ner-take-all game five at 8pm tonight in the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois. The game will be broad cast live on ESPN2 and the winner will advance to face the Las Vegas Aces in the Finals.Facing elimination Tues day night, the Sun scored a WNBA playoff record 66 points in the paint en route to a 104-80 win in game four. Jones finished with nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. The 24-point margin of victory was the largest in the series thus far and the Sun’s 104 points was a fran chise record on 57 percent shooting from the field. Sun head coach Curt Miller said the team responded in the manner it had to with their season on the“Bigline. response by our team and the starting group that really set the tone early with the aggressiveness at both ends of the floor. We talked the entire time about how this was going to be a points in the paint series for us and that was an incredi ble performance with points in the paint,” he said. “We felt deflated after game three that we played so well defensively but couldn’t get to the finish line, so incredible heart and determination by our play ers to do what was capable.” He highlighted Jones’ leadership early on as a scorer, then later as a facili tator when the Sky came with double teams. “I thought she was very aggressive with catches, she set the tone with her aggressiveness wanting the basketball,” he said. “She was unselfish, I thought at times she was almost too unselfish out of some congestion and I thought she could take some shots but I was really pleased with her activity, her aggres siveness was impressive.” Along with Jones’ stat line, DeWanna Bonner fin ished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Alyssa Thomas fin ished with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. It marked just the fifth time in WNBA Playoffs his tory that a team had three players each with over nine points, six rebounds and four assists and the first time since the Minnesota Lynx accomplished the feat in The2013.Sun shot under 40 percent in two of the first three games of the series, before their efficient shoot ing percentage in game four.Early in the series, Jones cited ball control and defence as her team’s keys to “Wewinning.got to take care of the ball, making an empha sis on being strong with it whether we’re in the post - for me and the other post players the double teams are coming - so being ready for that - but ultimately just being better,” she said fol lowing a game two loss. “For us, defence is such a big part of what we are doing, being able to get stops and run out in transi tion. In the games we lost you could count the amount of times we got three stops, which is something we use as a mark for the level of defence we’re playing in the game.”Jones scored her seventh point midway through the second quarter, more than she scored in all of game three when she finished with a series low six. Game five will be the 10th matchup this season between the two teams. The Sun took game one on the road at Wintrust Arena before the Sky took back-to-back games to take a series lead. “Obviously home court and crowds play a factor but it will come down to who plays better for two hours on Thursday,” Miller said. “We have won some tough road games, we have a team that grinds and has toughness and has grit and I feel like that’s what you need to win a big play off game on the road.”

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Pakistan teenager Naseem Shah smashed back-to-back sixes in the last over against Afghan istan yesterday for a one-wicket victory that sets up the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka. Needing 11 off the last over and only one wicket in hand, the 19-year-old Shah clobbered consecu tive sixes off fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi’s two low full tosses to take Pakistan to 131-9. In Super 4 game dominated by bowlers, Pakistan also did well to restrict Afghanistan to 129-6 through its pacers and spinners. Shah had earlier clean bowled cap tain Mohammad Nabi for a golden duck to finish withPakistan’s1-19.

“I’m proud of of everything we’ve accomplished here.”

She’ll also take into retirement the definition of being a floor leader and ultimately a winner. But she wasn’t able to add a fifth title to that résumé. Bird finished her final game with eight points and eight assists.“As sad as it is that we’re we’re not having the ability to compete for a champion ship, I think what’s more devastating ... is just the fact that we’re no longer going to be on the court with Sue,” Stewart said. Gray was the biggest thorn for Seattle with her clutch shooting often late in the shot clock. Seattle pulled even at 67-all, only to have Gray hit a 3 as the shot clock expired. Gray scored consecutive buckets later in the fourth to keep the Aces ahead, but her miss and Gabby Wil liams’ three-point play gave Seattle an 83-82 lead with 2:40Thatleft. was Seattle’s last lead.Wilson’s three-point play put the Aces back ahead 85-83 and Gray wouldn’t miss, her jumper with 30 seconds left giving the Aces a 92-87 lead. Wilson fin ished with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Gray finished as the first player in WNBA playoff history with 30 points and 10 assists in a game.“When Chelsea is rock ing and rolling my biggest thing is just getting the hell out of her way,” Wilson said. “At the end of the day, you just got to get out of the way and let people rock.”

win also ended India’s slim chances to reach next Sunday’sTempersfinal.flared toward the end when fast bowler Fareed Khan reduced Pakistan to 118-9 in the 19th over by having Asif Ali (16) dismissed. Both players exchanged words as Asif raised his bat close to Fareed’s face and they pushed each other before Afghanistan players rushed to separate the two.A jubilant Shah threw away his helmet and batting gloves while sprinting toward the dressing room once his last hit sailed over long off and his teammates also rushed onto the field to celebrate the breath taking win. “To be honest, it was quite a tensed environ ment in the dressing room,” Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said. “I was in the dressing room … I thought it is cricket and I have seen Naseem bat like this, so I had a little bit of Thebelief.”left-armer Farooqi had put Pakistan on the backfoot when he trapped Babar leg before wicket for a golden duck and then struck twice in his penultimate over before bowling two full tosses to Shah in the last over to end up with 3-34. Babar has struggled in the Asia Cup after his four straight belowpar scores of 10, 9, 14 and 0, but Pakistan’s middle-order has done well in the tournament in run-chases.Leg-spinner Rashid Khan (2-25) had newly crowned No. 1 T20 batter Mohammad Rizwan leg before wicket before Shadab Khan (36) and Iftikhar Ahmed (30) steadied the chase with a 42-run partnership. But Afghanistan didn’t give up in the death overs and claimed six quick wickets once Fareed Khan (3-31), playing his first game in the tourna ment, had Iftikhar caught deep midwicket in the 16th over.

The Aces will get the spotlight in the Finals. On this night, the aftermath of the result was all about Bird and the conclusion to her two decades as a pillar to the Storm franchise and the WNBA.Birdstayed on the court after the final buzzer, receiving hugs from the entire Aces roster. She wiped away tears while the crowd cheered and cried along with her, and chanted “Thank you, Sue.” “I also wanted to kind of have one last moment to say thank you, to soak it all in because in some ways, it is a happy thing,” Bird said.

RECORD HALF Stewart’s 26 points in the first half was the most in the first half of a playoff game, topping the 24 points Angel McCoughtry had in the first half for Atlanta against Minnesota in 2011. McCoughtry finished that game with 38. UP NEXT Las Vegas will host either Connecticut or Chicago in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday.

— When Rory McIlroy runs into some of his former Ryder Cup teammates at Wen tworth this week, don’t expect them to spend much time reminiscing about fondEuropeanmemories.Ryder Cup stalwarts Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter are among the con tingent of LIV Golf players who are competing at the BMW PGA Champion ship this week, much to the dismay of McIlroy and the others who have resisted the financial gains of joining the Saudi-backed breaka wayDuringseries.

“It wasn’t really a situa tion I wanted to get myself in knowing who was going to be in that room,” McIl roy said. “So I sort of removed myself from it and let them thrash it out.” Pelley gave no details of what was said at the meeting at his own news conference, saying it was “very short and there were a couple of questions from LIV players that I think we answered.”Pelley also launched a staunch defence of the financial viability of the European Tour — recently rebranded as the DP World Tour — and its ability to compete commercially. “It is easy to get dragged down by the LIV propa ganda machine, churning out negative news stories and misinformation about the poor state of the tra ditional golfing world, including our tour,” Pelley said. “It’s just not right.” McIlroy, Fitzpatrick and Horschel all play in the same group today so they won’t have to share the course with any LIV play ers until the weekend at least. When asked if it would give him added motivation to play in the final pair ing on Sunday alongside a player who joined the Saudi-backed series, McIl roy couldn’t resist one more jibe. “They are going to be pretty tired on Sunday,” he said, “it will be the fourth day.”

victory ended a 34-unbeaten streak in competitive games for Plzen. The Czech Republic club had won 10 of its first 12 matches this season. It entered Wednesday’s game with 29 wins, five draws. Barcelona spent big to revamp its squad despite struggling financially in recent years. It finished behind Real Madrid in the Spanish league and was eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League last season, its first without Argentina great Lionel Messi. The new signings have clicked early on and Bar celona has outscored opponents 16-2 to start the season.Kessié, making his Champions League debut, opened the scoring with a header off a corner kick for his first goal for the Catalan club.Jules Koundé, another Barcelona signing in the offseason, redirected the ball toward Kessié with another header inside the area.Lewandowski added to the lead in the 34th with a well-placed shot into the far corner from inside the area. He scored again in firsthalf stoppage time with a header after a nice cross by Ousmane Dembélé and with a low shot from out side the area in the 67th. Lewandowski, signed from Bayern for nearly 50 million euros ($50 million), had already scored five goals in four Spanish league matches this “Lewandowskiseason. showed his class tonight,” Plzen coach Michal Bilek said. “His finishing is phenom enal and he perfectly chooses the right position in theHebox.is rightly considered one of the best forwards in thePlzenworld.”had pulled one closer in the 44th with a header by Jan Sykora after a defensive lapse by the Barcelona defense. Torres scored the fifth goal for the hosts with a nice volley from close range in the 71st. A penalty kick called in favour of Plzen in the 23rd was reversed after video review showed a foul by the attacker in the buildup. “We expected such a hard match,” Bilek said. “The boys did what they could, but it was not enough. Bar celona showed tremendous quality in all aspects of the game.”Barcelona got the easy win despite Hernández rotating his squad and making six changes to the team that defeated Sevilla 3-0 in the Spanish league at the weekend, with Kessié and Ansu Fati among those coming in and veteran cap tain Sergio Busquets and newly signed Raphinha being left on the bench. Pablo Torre made his first-team debut by replac ing Kessié in the 81st. a forgettable Ryder Cup for Europe last year at Whistling Straits, one of the most memorable moments came when McIl roy broke down in tears when talking about how much he loved his team mates. On Wednesday, he merely sighed when asked how what seemed like a tight-knit bond with Garcia, Westwood and Poulter can survive the fallout from LIV.“I have no idea,” McIlroy said. “I wouldn’t say I’ve got much of a relationship with them at the minute. ... But, like, I haven’t done anything different. They are the ones that have made that decision. So I can sit here and keep my head held high and say I haven’t done anything differently.” Shane Lowry also said there could be some awk ward meetings this week with players he used to be “good friends” with. “Obviously I haven’t seen them in a long time now. Don’t hang out with them anymore,” Lowry said. “Probably won’t be going out for dinner because we haven’t seen each other. But yeah, there are certain lads that I shake hands with and certain hands I wouldn’t.” So the rift between play ers created by LIV shows no sign of healing at Went worth, where Billy Horschel and Jon Rahm both took aim at the LIV contingent onTheTuesday.LIV golfers who are European Tour mem bers are allowed to play at Wentworth while their suspension for playing in the inaugural event of the breakaway series is under appeal. Their Ryder Cup status is also subject to legal appeals.U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick said he was “fed up with talking about” the whole situation, but acknowledged that the current tensions could make it difficult to include any LIV players on next year’s Ryder Cup team. “There’s one person I would have, who I would be fine with playing with and have on the team,” Fitzpat rick said, declining to name the player. “But you know, next year is obviously a long way away, and there’s a lot of stuff to come with the whole situation. So that might change things, change attitudes even more, and then that probably makes it difficult.” The European Ryder Cup team for next year was already affected by LIV Golf when Henrik Sten son was stripped of the captaincy for joining the breakaway series. When the Swede’s name came up at the end of McIlroy’s news conference as the only person to win both the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and the European Tour’s Race to Dubai — a feat the Northern Irishman is trying to equal — McIlroy just quipped:McIlroy“Who?”hadsaid before the event that it would be “hard to stomach” playing alongside the LIV golfers this week, but said he had yet to see most of them at Wentworth.“Myopinion is they shouldn’t be here, but again that’s just my opinion,” McIlroy said, before taking a jab at LIV Golf’s format of only playing three rounds instead of four and starting on different holes. “But we are all going to tee it up on the first tee tomorrow and we are all going to go play 72 holes, which is a novelty for them at this point, and then we’ll go from there.”

The other key moments came at the conclusions of the first two sets; Tiafoe is 6-0 in tiebreakers at this USRublevOpen. actually had the first chance to nose ahead, with a set point at 6-5 in the first, but Tiafoe erased it with a risky forehand to a corner that drew a netted reply.Several minutes later, it was Tiafoe who took the set, sealing it with a 130 mph ace, then strutting to the changeover, nodding and motioning with his racket for more noise. A similar scene played out in the second tie breaker after a drop volley by Tiafoe forced a mistake by Rublev to make it 6-0. When Tiafoe produced a backhand return winner to seal a two-set lead, he sprinted to the sideline, sat down near his messy col lection of towels, shirts and socks spread out around the ground — call it “col lege dorm room chic” or, to use his word, “diabolical” — and shook his fist amid the delirium of a standing ovation.“Best tiebreaker I will ever play,” Tiafoe said. “Honestly a laughable tiebreaker. You can’t make thatRublevup.” never tried to hide his anger at the way things were going. He hit himself in the leg with his racket or punched his strings. Over and over, he gesticulated and yelled toward his guest box, where only four of the 15 seats were occupied, quite a contrast to Tiafoe’s com pletely full section. Ferreira was there. So was Tiafoe’s agent, Jill Smoller, whose clients include Serena Williams. Tiafoe’s twin brother, Franklin, too, and their parents, who emigrated to the U.S. from Sierra Leone in the 1990s during a civil war there. They lived in Maryland, where Dad helped build a junior tennis center then worked as a maintenance man there, leading Frances and Frank lin to pick up a racket. “Yeah, it’s a great story. Hopefully there will be a movie about it one day,” Ferreira said. “But he has to win the Grand Slam first. You only get movies if you do Pickingwell.”up on that theme, the guy known to everyone in the sport as “Big Foe” said: “Everyone loves a Cinderella story. Just trying to make one.” So far, so good.

JAYS ORIOLES4, 1 BALTIMORE (AP) — Alek Manoah retired 22 of his final 23 hitters in an impressive eight-inning performance, and Toronto wrapped up a successful series in Baltimore. The Blue Jays won three of four to take a 4 1/2game lead on Baltimore for the last wild card in the American League. Manoah (14-7) allowed a run in the first, but the Orioles didn’t manage another baserunner until the sixth.

“The first week was the Serena Open,” tennis ana lyst John McEnroe said during Sunday’s coverage. “Now it’s the US Open.”

Roddick also was the last man from the country to win any Grand Slam singles championship, taking the 2003 US Open. None of the men left in the bracket this time has ever won a major trophy. Tiafoe’s first career Slam semifinal will come Friday against No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz or No. 11 Jannik Sinner.“Frances is such a fantas tic young man. Good things happen to good people,” tournament director Stacey Allaster said. “Irrespective of how he finishes, this has been a monumental evolu tion in his career and he’ll only build upon the learn ing and success of this U.S. Open.”This step forward has come with the help of Tia foe’s coach, former pro player Wayne Ferreira, who said the player used to not be “really professional enough,” and pointed to important changes to his habits when it comes to eating — there had been too much chocolate and cookies and not enough breakfasts — practice and work in the gym. “It’s taken time for us to get gradually to where we are today,” Ferreira said. “I kind of imagined he would be at his best by the end of nextOnyear.”Wednesday, Tiafoe played aggressive, offen sive tennis, never got broken and used 18 aces along with strong volleying to oust Rublev, a Russian who dropped to 0-6 in major quarterfinals. Tiafoe won 31 of 41 points when he went to the net; Rublev only ventured forward 11 times.Inthe women’s quarterfi nals yesterday, No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka earned a second consecutive trip to the final four at Flushing Meadows with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over Karolina Pliskova. “I’m ready for it,” Sabalenka said. “I’m ready for another Sabalenka’sfight.”next oppo nent will be No. 1 Iga Swiatek or No. 8 Jessica Pegula, who played each other last night. Pegula is the last player from the United States in the women’s bracket. Rain drops began fall ing just before the start of Tiafoe vs. Rublev, so they stood around waiting for the retractable roof to be shut. That resulted in a cool, wind-free environment and a louder setting, with applause and yells from fans reverberating in what became an indoor arena — circumstances that favored Tiafoe. The only break of serve came more than two hours in, when Tiafoe went ahead 4-3 in the third set, then stood mostly motionless on court, enjoying the cre scendo of support.
