December 29, 2021 started off as a normal day for Pastor Lance Wallace and his wife Donique. The couple had been working from home, in separate rooms, while each taking turns watching their four-month-old daughter Shekinah. Pastor Wallace decided the family needed a break and a change of scenery after being in the house all day.
Lance Wallace spent four years, on and off again, writing his new book, “You Had To Go Through It”. When he thought it was finally nearing completion, he had the strange feeling that it was somehow still unfinished. That’s when tragedy struck.Hiswife, 38-year-old Donique Wallace, died suddenly last December, just a few days after Christmas and only a month after their fifth wedding anniversary.PastorWallace, who turns 38 this month, decided his book could not be published without him includ ing the story of how God walked with him through this heart-wrenching loss and helped him navigate life as a single father and find his path again. The full story can now be found in his book, which he finally released this summer.

“I quickly grabbed Shekinah and reassured my wife that the baby was OK. At this time Donique’s body was twitching. She was not responding; her eyeballs were rolling and her tongue was out of her mouth. I told the security guard to call the ambulance. Within a minute or so I watched her fist open; I watched as she stopped breathing. I’m holding her and watched her take her last breath. The love of my life was gone just like that in the back seat of my car.”

“I wondered if the tear was from the pain she was feeling because her fists were clenched so tightly or if it was from concern that she was helpless and thinking Shekinah was on the floor and I was in the food store,” he told Tribune Weekend.
“I told my wife that I would take her for a ride and maybe go out to look for a walker at Cost Rite,” he said.

London’s Morning Post reports that he slammed his cab into a building while in the state of intoxication. As cars were so new, the newspaper explained that the cab was “a motorcar – a four-wheeled electric cab.” He was probably going slower than 8mph. Smith later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.
Once they found a suitable walker, the family decided to go to the SuperValue food store in Golden Gates. He quickly dashed in to grab some fruit for his wife, whom he left in the car with their daughter. Upon returning to the car, he expe rienced a great shock.“Idid not see (Donique at first). As I got closer I saw that she was slouched down, laying off in the seat. First thing that came to my mind was that she had fallen asleep. I was thinking, ‘how could she fall asleep with the baby in herAarms’.”closer look made him realise that the baby was wedged in between the car seat and the floor, having tumbled on her head. His wife, he discovered, was foaming at the mouth, her fists tightly clenched and a tear rolling down her face.

“We’re getting ready to release a video for this cultural giant of a song. Recently, my team and I were so blessed to have Commonwealth Brew ery Ltd lease the song for its new Kalik Platinum assets. For me, having a global company trust my art and integrate it into a campaign of this magni tude tells me the art of Bahamian culture and our economic impact are not mutually exclusive,’ she said.Bodine also has a new song called “Mainte nance Fee”, produced by Rik Carey, coming out.
Bodine has also been working on a video for the song that she is excited to share with audiences.
Her plate is full, she tells Tribune Weekend, and she is “devouring” all of the opportunities that have been coming her way.
“I first performed it at FTX’s Off the Grid event in South Beach, Miami, earlier this year. Imagine how amazing it was to see Americans run across the sand to hear and sing the lines to an unreleased song. The song will be available for streaming and purchase at the end of September. I can’t wait for the public to enjoy this piece of art in preparation for the holiday season,” she said.
Since April of this year, Bodine has also been been taking advantage of the many free resources available from the Ministry of Economic Affairs through partnerships with the Caribbean Export and Development Agency; courses on music busi ness and management. She has participated as a facilitator and worked through the sessions.
While doing all of this, Bodine has also been promoting her latest single, “Sugar in a Plum”
“Have you ever heard the stories of single women? In ‘Maintenance Fee’ my character talks and flirts with a possible suitor. Its clear she likes him, may even find him entertaining, but warns him of her expectations. On the surface, people may think it’s about money, but it’s more about the respect for the roles both persons are expected to play. I wanted to play a part of the firm woman but also I did not want to emasculate the man in the song. I’m hoping that the audience enjoys the experience and laughs at this slice of Bahamian life.”
The song is a fun and flirty one, Bodine added.
One of the things she loves most about the track is that she can pretend to be the song’s character on“Bahamiansstage. like jokes, laughter and foolishness, and I specialise in that. Seriously, ‘Maintenance Fee’ is a bit of humour therapy and thoughtful ness,” she said.

But while singing songs is fun and important to her, she also has to think of the longevity of her career and take the necessary steps to ensure she can stick around as long as possible to entertain people.“Ihave taken the last few months to work on the business of being an entertainer. What people do not see is the back-end; registering and track ing music, working with legal to secure copyright, trademarks and collecting royalties and the negoti ations,” she said.
“’I have recently completed the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs which took place from April to August. It’s an opportunity I think any woman interested in pursuing a business should undertake,” she said.

Bodine becomes business savvy and promises new fun song about male-female relationships
living through a two-year lull in the music industry occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bahamian songtress Bodine Victoria’s musical and other pursuits have once again been taking off.

“We’ve just finished the treatment for the video and we’ll be casting soon. Shooting a music video gives us an opportunity to make short films and expose new and seasoned actors thousands of times to our audiences. I’m looking forward to doing a bit more of that and cannot wait for the opportunity. We’ll be finishing off the grant pro posals and submitting those to secure additional funding for this project and can’t wait for the roll-out.”Apartfrom her musical ventures, Bodine’s cooking show “BodingPot” is set to return with all new-branding and new recipes.
“We saw such a great response over the past two years and the channel is still gaining subscrib ers. Before the pandemic we were headed to Atlanta to complete a demonstration on cooking Bahamian dishes and storytelling. We’re look ing forward to exporting these experiences and opportunities and we have so many international viewers,” she said.

vegetables yet? If not, now is the time to get started. September is the month to get going on seed trays of what ever it is that you wish to grow through our winter vegetable grow ing season. Arugula to zucchini, it’s all going to grow, and it all does best in the upcoming months. Remember that seeds don’t really “expire”; seed packets that you bought last year and may be stashed in a drawer, are still viable. The only thing is that as seeds age over the years, viability gradually decreases, but even seeds that are years old will possibly show some germination. There’s never any harm in putting old seeds down, the worst that could happen is that they don’t germinate. I’ve noticed some of the wizened gardeners are collecting the Sargas sum seaweed that has been prolific along our shores lately. This is a great addition to any compost pile and a natural resource that in many cases costs resources to clean up. It’s a deterrence for beach use at resorts and in the tourism industry, but it is a boon for our gardens! Be careful of where the waste water is disposed as it can cause salt buildup that can be damaging to plant growth. Baz Luhrmann’s car nivalesque Elvis Presley biopic, starring breakthrough actor Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, also doesn’t skimp on scale. In her review, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr called it “gloriously messy — a maximalist opera of contra dictions, styles, truths, myths, memories and headlines.”

The Pender Stage Group toured the country with Grant who developed his acting skills and his ability to be funny. He enjoyed what he was doing.
Sir OndaatjeChristopher writes about the English-born American actor whose transatlantic accent, debonair demeanour and light-hearted approach to acting made him one of Hollywood’s definitive leading men.
A little over two years later Bob Pender took his stage group to the United States. They
Cary Grant was born Archibald Alex Leach on January 18, 1904 in the northern Bristol suburb of Horfield in England. He was the second child of Elias James Leach and Elsie Maria Leach. His father was a tailor’s presser in a clothes fac tory, and his mother worked as a seamstress. His brother John died of tuberculous meningitis when he was five years old and his mother blamed herself bitterly for his death. Protective of her younger son she taught him song and dance and took him to the cinema where he enjoyed Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle and Bronco Billy Ander son. He went to Bishop Road Primary School when he was four and a half.

In 1915, he was sent to Fairfield Grammar

Grant went often to the theatre with his father and made friends with the Bob Pender Stage Group. He became a stilt walker and may have toured with them for a little while when he was only ten years old.
School in Bristol where his acrobatic talents and his good looks made him popular. He spent his evenings working backstage in Bristol theatres. However, on March 13, 1918 he was expelled from Fairfield – possibly for being discovered in the girls’ lavatory. It was rumoured that he was intent on rejoining the Bob Pender Stage Group and had got himself expelled. He joined Pender only three days after he left the Fairfield school. As he was only 14 his father had to sign a three-year contract between Grant and Pender guaranteeing a weekly salary plus room and board until he was 18. He never looked back – and was clearly stage-struck.

travelled on RMS Olympic and Grant later remembered that Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford had also been on board. The suave elegant Fairbanks became a role model. On arrival in New York a week later the Pender Group performed at the New York Hippodrome –then the largest theatre in the world, able to hold almost six thousand people. They put on twelve shows a week for nine months. When Pender returned to England, Grant decided to stay in the United States and become part of the Vaudeville circuit touring to St Louis, Missouri, Cleveland and Milwaukee. He loved the zany humour of the Marx Brothers, and Laurel and Hardy, and with the Knockabout Comedians got a gig in 1922 at the Palace Theatre on Broadway. He also formed a group called “The Walking Stanleys” and starred at the Hippodrome – also. George Tilyon, who owned the Steeplechase Park on Coney Island, hired him to appear on stilts wearing bright clothing and a sandwich board advertising the race-track. “The Walking Stanleys” eventu ally re-grouped and toured the United Sates for two years. Los Angeles in 1924 seemed to have made a lasting impression on him and must have injected a new ambition in his life. Back in New York he continued to juggle and perform acrobat ics in the National Vaudeville Artists Club and other venues. He toured again with the “Jack Janis Company” and got a bit part in Oscar Ham merstein’s 1927 musical Golden Dawn, and then his play Polly. He became a client of the William Morris Agency. He appeared opposite Jeanette
When Grant was nine his father – who was an alcoholic – placed his mother in a mental institution. They then moved into his grand mother’s home in Bristol and he was told that his mother had died. His father remarried and started another family. Grant did not learn that his mother was still alive until he was thirty-one. Almost immediately, as soon as he learned where she was, he arranged for her mother to leave the institution. His father confessed to his crime shortly before he died. At the time Grant was filming Gunga Din.

In 1933, he appeared with Mae West in She Done Him Wrong and got a lot more attention. Again his role as a Salvation Army director didn’t
suit him but he oozed charm and he seemed to hit it off with Mae West. She later claimed to have discovered him. The film became a box office hit and made over $2 million in the United States. His next film, also with Mae West, I’m No Angel (1933), was even more successful financially and saved Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy. Grant’s salary was increased from $450 to $750 a week. Then

things started to go sour for Grant and, despite his early promise, he had a number of bad flops including Born to Be Bad (1934), Kiss and Make-Up (1934), and Wings in the Dark (1935) where he played a blind pilot opposite Myrna Loy. Paramount didn’t really want him anymore, and in the latter part of 1935 they loaned him out to RKO Pictures where producer Pandro Berman still thought he had potential. His marriage to actress Virginia Cherrill was on the rocks. They divorced in 1935.

Two days after the October 29, 1929 Wall Street Crash he opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York in A Wonderful Night. Now under contract to the Shubert Brothers, in 1930 he toured for nine months in The Street Singer. He spent the summer of 1931 appearing in twelve different productions at The Muny in St. Louis, Missouri. Critics hailed him as a John Barrymore with a Cockney accent, but over time he developed what became his own mid-Atlantic accent. It was different and he was both admired and criticised but increased his determination to be liked and admired as an actor. However the Depression seriously affected his work and his earnings.

“Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.”

Grant’s leading romantic role in the 1931 Wil liam B Friedlander musical Nikki, opposite Fay Wray, closed after only thirty-nine performances, but was praised by The New York Daily News columnist who wrote that “the young lad from England has a big future in the movies”. This prophecy turned out to be correct but it had been a hard tough grind to get that recognition. It led to a screen test by Paramount Publix and a small role as a sailor in Singapore Sue (1931), a ten-minute film by Casey Robinson. Through Robinson, Grant met Jesse L. Lasky and B.P. Schulberg, the co-founder and general manager of Paramount Pictures respectively. After another screen test Schulberg signed a five-year contract with the twenty-seven-year-old Grant on December 7, 1931 at a starting salary of $450 a week. Schulberg demanded that Grant, who was still known only as Archie Leach, change his name to something more American like Gary Cooper. And thus Cary Grant was born.
Right from the very beginning Grant, remem bering that Douglas Fairbanks was his role model, set out to be a glamorous male Hollywood idol. He knew he had the looks and he always exuded charm. His film debut at Paramount was in This is the Night in 1932 when he played the part of an Olympic javelin thrower. He hated the part but critics noticed him. The same year he played a wealthy playboy opposite Marlene Dietrich in Blonde Venus. Again he was noticed and contin ued to play romantic playboy roles in Merrily We Go to Hell opposite Sylvia Sidney and Frederick March; Devil and the Deep with Gary Cooper and Tallulah Bankhead, and Hot Saturday with Nancy Carroll and Randolph Scott. He wasn’t a star or leading actor but he stood out among other good looking actors with his easy-going stage presence.

When Grant’s contract with Paramount ended in 1936 he did not renew it and decided to work as a freelance actor instead – one of the first to do this.

The first meeting of the new non-profit society, attended by 12 people, took place on June 5, 1924. Soon after that, the first ‘clinic’, a one-room establishment on Parlia ment Street, opened its doors and set to work towards putting a stop to animal cruelty.

What are we thinking?
A bull shark photographed in the Bahamas

I am told the boat company carrying the victim was called Seas the Day. I googled them; they have lots of differ ent marine tours and outings available. I am wondering what their status is in theWeBahamas?sooften turn a blind eye in this country. When such accidents occur, they involve everybody with a trickledown effect. A shark attack is devas tating, as is a dog attack, to the entire country.Originally, shark dives were only conducted several miles offshore, in an area nobody went recreational swim
Stuart Cove makes several excellent points, as does the former Minister of Health, Dr Duane Sands. This should not become a political debate; this should be a debate amongst educated and experienced Bahamians who know something about the topic and want to stop tourists from being attacked.
People are going out to see turtles (a shark delicacy), the turtles are be ing fed, people are flapping around on the surface doing a poor imitation of a distressed seal. How is a shark sup posed to know to stay away? A recipe for disaster, for sure.
I feel a bit like Chicken Little with the feeling that the sky is falling on our heads. Here we are in one of the most wonderful countries in the world, beauty abounds, and yet disaster strikes…more than once.

If you’ve been looking for that special cat to steal

Research vessels must be better monitored, charged more than a pit tance for their permits, and should be directed to go only to areas where there is absolutely no recreational swimming if chumming is involved.
A man is attacked by dogs, brutally, and is found dead in the street. A woman swimming off Green Cay near Rose Island is attacked by a bull shark and bitten so badly that she too died. I wonder if she bled out.
Here in the Bahamas, we have gone nuts with the mindless exploitation of marine resources and pigs (that’s an other article). We feed everything with no thought of the repercussions and the dangers it may cause. The almighty dollar is the master.
Yesterday there were several very good articles about this recent shark attack in this paper (note I told you something would knock the dog attack out of everyone’s minds).
How devastating for the family who came on a cruise ship, signed up for a dream-like experience of swimming with turtles, to end up losing a wife and mother, at only 58 years of age. What an absolutely terrible way to have your life end. I cannot imagine what either of those poor people must have gone through.
There was similar attack in June 2019. A young woman, only 21 years old, lost her life because of a shark attack.Icannot help but feel that sharks are the same as they were when I was young. I grew up in the Berry Islands. In the summer there was a prolifera tion of sharks of all different species, and they were big. We would swim (only where there was a sandy bot tom), we would have somebody watch out, a shark would swim into the area, we would get out of the water, the shark would swim by, we would admire it, and go back in to the water. We respected sharks greatly and acknowl edged that the sea was theirs and we were but visitors in their territory.
If you can’t adopt, foster. If you can’t foster, volun Ifteer.you can’t volunteer, Ifdonate.youcan’t donate, edu Helpcate! make a difference!
Chumming is everywhere now, nobody bothers to respect areas where swimmers and snorkellers go. There are mixed reports if there had been any recent chumming in the area off Green Cay this past week. There cer tainly had been with the 2019 attack.

High-end candles in a jar
Her candles are clean-burning and non-toxic, and are safe for every home. Jovonne believes candles have the ability to elevate, not overpower, your space with wonderful fragrances.
“I was looking for a creative outlet after long days of working remotely, monitoring virtual classes for two kids, and the anxiety that came with the uncertainty of COVID-19,” she said.
“A customer once compared my product to a high-end luxury candle brand and told me that I was underpriced. Even though I want Pour’ed Wax Studio to stand on its own, this reassured me that I’m on the right track. People are embracing small businesses more than ever. Since starting Pour’ed Wax Studio I’ve met so many people who make it a point to come out to popups and reach out on social media to support small local businesses,” she said.
As fall approaches, Jovonne said her studio is heading into prime “candle season”.
The brand can be found @pouredwax on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

“Home fragrance, in particular candles, has always been a love of mine. I’m a self-taught candle maker and I do it all; from hand-pouring the candles, blending the scents and even product photography,” Jovonne told Tribune Weekend.

Jovonne Pratt created her Pour’ed Wax Studio, she didn’t want it to be just another candle company; she wanted it to feel like the high-end brands you buy during your shopping trips abroad.

“The favourites during this time are normally rich scent notes of cinnamon, vanilla and of course pumpkin. The response we received last year was incredible, espe cially since we debuted at our first pop-up in December 2021. Pour’ed Wax Studio will be hitting the road again and coming to a pop-up near you this holiday season. We look forward to the same excitement from our cus tomers this season and for new customers to enjoy the Pour’ed Wax experience.”

In recent years, Bahamians have gotten into candles big time. And they are not only using them for decora tion and to fill their homes with pleasant scents; they are also making the candles themselves.
“The creative process is what I love the most. I normally develop collections with three scents that are related to a theme. For example, the Wellness Collec tion, which is a best-seller, was designed to promote self-care and well-being. The scents include ‘Reset’, which is a combination of white sage and lavender; ‘Refocus’, which combines peppermint and eucalyp tus, and ‘Refresh’, which has a hint of mint and cedar wood.”Like so many Bahamians, Jovonne came to her new venture during the height of the pandemic.
