Commonwealth realms the envy of the world. Investors like safe places in which to place their funds. The track record of republics controlled by politicians is very poor. Another failed third world republic should not be the future of The Bahamas. Let us now give our support to our new King Charles III who is well trained for his new role. His active interest in the envi ronment and other issues will assist Commonwealth countries as we move ahead. Let us also be proud of our heritage.
The opposition FNM should be gaining momen tum with all the mess that exists. Sadly, it is not.
Well, if that’s so, let the debate begin – but we start this referendum at a point with no positions outlined, no proposals put forward, and no one looking to lead theGivencharge.how previous referendum votes finished, that’s not a promising place to start.

The late Queen was by fate thrust on the throne shortly after her father, King George III died unex pectedly, and her uncle, King Edward, abdicated to marry “the love of his life”, Wallis Warfield Simpson. After his abdication, the former King was appointed Governor of The Bahamas. He served with distinction and was a strong proponent of “equal” rights for all Bahamians.Uponascending to the throne, Queen Elizabeth adopted a hectic and all inclusive schedule. She would have visited the associated countries within The Commonwealth of Nations on multiple occa sions during her 70 years reign, second only to that of the late Queen Victoria. She toured inner city areas in the UK; the independ ent nations therein and the remnants of colonies. She was a strong promoter of

WE ARE at nearly one year since the PLP was elected. Philip Davis has proven to be inad equate as a leader, as we expected.Undermy friend “Brave” there is no direction. The PLP has no plan to create jobs. They have no plan on crime. They are wasting the people’s money on extrav agant trips and bloated contracts and consultan cies to PLP supporters. The country is stuck in a rut at a time of high inflation around the world.
The FNM must do the work of finding the person most capable of uniting the party and the country. We must find the person capa ble of getting FNMs to return to the polls and vote for our great party. Our people did not show up a year ago. The PLP won the election nearly by default.

LEON E. H. DUPUCH,
So how have we reached a point where the Prime Minister has committed to a referendum on a major constitutional issue?Well, consider this – just last week, col umnist Alicia Wallace noted a comment from the Prime Minister with regard to the issue of marital rape. When asked if he would criminalise marital rape, Mr Davis said it was not included in the par ty’s Blueprint for Change. She noted this seemed to suggest it was not a priority – the party did not commit to it, so the administration would not commit to it.

Certainly, she never hindered any nation from replacing her as Head of State. Barbados was the latest one and now, even in the short aftermath of her death, so-called “repub licans” are demanding reparations for the fact that the British monarchy, long before Queen Elizabeth’s time appeared to embrace slavery, if not actively, passively.Itmust be kept in mind that she herself never owned a single slave. One of her known personal “friends” was the late great Nelson Mandela of South Africa where public racism once abounded. At least seven former Prime Min isters of the UK would have paid her a visit to be invited to form the govern ment. With the absence of the indomitable Dame/ Baroness Margaret, due to her death some years ago, after she demitted front line politics, they were all here. Constitutionally, the

None of this looks like coherent gov ernance. Mr Davis had said himself marital rape wasn’t on his government’s agenda – and the backlash to that com ment seemed to make it suddenly appear on the agenda, but not with any wholehearted commitment.

The next FNM leader
We have people in our party who are capable of delivering for us. Let us now begin the work behind the scenes to find our nextWeleader.havedelivered before for the Bahamian people. We can deliver again.
The recent thirtieth anni versary of our party’s 1992 victory brought back warm memories for me. We res cued The Bahamas from stagnation, corruption and backwardness.Wemade this country modern and prosperous. We can do it again.
So was Mr Davis simply trying to avoid that same kind of backlash? Was he saying that the administration is considering it simply to mollify any potential critics? Seemingly not – he didn’t say we may consider it, he didn’t say it was perhaps something to be done – he said he will have a referendum.
Pick up that same Blueprint for Change and search for the word “repub lic” and you won’t find it anywhere. Yet the same administration is now floating a referendum on an issue the party did not commit to.
OF THE DAY

NOW that the late Queen Elizabeth 11, Monarch of The Common wealth of Nations, is dead and gone to her reward, I find it very disturbing hear ing and reading some of the comments being made by Bahamians and others around the world about her legacy. The woman is not even buried yet, but the uncomplimentary and gratuitous remarks have exposed our darker side.
Republic would not help Bahamas
Given the success rates of referendum votes in The Bahamas previously, that’s not an overwhelming wave of enthusi asm to present to the people.
THE news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II was only a day old before Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis floated the prospect of The Bahamas going without a monarch altogether.
He also said: “The only challenge with us moving to a republic is that I can’t, as much as I would wish to do it, I cannot do it without your consent.”

Asked if a referendum was on the table, he said: “For me, it always is but again it is our people who will have to decide.”That word always might not be entirely accurate. It was only in December last year that Mr Davis’ press secretary, Clint Watson, said that making The Bahamas a repub lic was not on the agenda of the Davis administration.Hesaid:“It’s not on our agenda right now. However, the Bahamian people can change that if they determine this is what they want to do. It would have to be something the Bahamian people request and put on the government’s agenda.”There doesn’t appear to have been a particular outcry to push the matter onto the agenda. No marches. No pro tests. The Bahamian people appear to have not been required after all for the Prime Minister’s administration to do an about-face.Sowhois championing the call for a republic? Well, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell had previously lamented that he couldn’t seem to convince people of his desire for a republic. The Bahamas has more pressing issues and social concerns confronting us right now rather than cussing out the late Queen and seek ing pie-in-the sky dreams. Going forward, no doubt our Prime Minister, the Hon Philip “Brave” Davis, QC, MP, will lead a delega tion to attend Her Majesty’s funeral.Notonly would it be right and proper but that event will, again, afford the PM to interact with world lead ers and those from The Commonwealth of Nations. I was greatly alarmed to read that with our Queen not even buried some Baha mian politicians are already talking about the country becoming a republic. As an investor in your country and a frequent resident I cannot see how that helps The Bahamas in any way.

Asked if the draft legislation crimi nalised marital rape, the minister said it criminalised rape.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Perry Christie said he will support whatever decision his successor makes.Section three of the Sexual Offences Act states that rape is the act of any person not under 14 years of age having sexual intercourse with another person who is not his spouse, without the consent of that other person; without consent which has been extorted by threats or fear of bodily harm; with consent obtained by personating the spouse of that other person; with consent obtained by false and fraudulent representa tion as to the nature and quality of the act.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE NEWS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2022
It became clear quite quickly there were two sets of reactions – those among people interacting with one another in person, and the reaction on social media.
And so here we are, in the wake of one landmark moment, faced with the possibility of another.

yet we did, with the Queen in attend ance, and the Royal Yacht, Britannia, in port. It was a validation of The Bahamas, a sign that we could hold our own and shine.
The sense of importance that goes with the Queen’s passing is rooted in part in the fact that for many of us, she has simply always been there.King Charles inherits the throne, but he does not inherit the reputation of his mother. He will have his own relationships, including with The Bahamas. He has visited in the past, and had already agreed to visit for the 50th anniversary year of independence. He will do so now as King, not as Prince.Butwill this moment of transition for the monar chy trigger a move towards a transition for The Baha mas? Is now the time to reconsider becoming a republic?OnFriday, Prime Min ister Philip “Brave” Davis said his administration will let Bahamians decide on that matter. He said he would support the move. We likely wouldn’t be having these conversations yet if the Queen still lived. Elsewhere, there was plenty of talk of the Queen going to hell rather than heaven, or not caring about her death at all. Then there were the people blaming the Queen for all the ills of colonialism. To put it mildly, there were plenty of people rejoicing the death on social media.
Some students I spoke to told of how their classes had been interrupted by a staff member coming in to break the news, and how discus sion of it had filled the day, along with speculation over whether the children would watch the funeral at school.

them.Sothe question now will be: What comes next?
His predecessor as both Prime Minister and PLP leader, Mr Christie, said: “The question and chal lenge now is that the new king, King Charles, will have the role to play that his mother played magnifi cently and the question will be how effective that will be to keep everything going in the way it has in the past.”

John was born in 1975, four months pre mature and weighing less than three pounds. For the first six weeks of his life he lived in an incubator in the neonatal ICU at the Prin cess Margaret Hospital because of his poorly developed organs. Initially, doctors gave him a low probability for survival but each day John became stronger and stronger. Eventu ally he was released, his life entrusted to the care of his loving parents, but within hours, his parents had to rush him back to the hos pital when he wouldn’t stop vomiting. It was shortly after being breast fed that his stomach shook and his jaws trembled violently. It was the choking noise that he made, as if he could barely catch his breath that frightened his mother the most. Because of his small, fragile size, she panicked immediately and cried and screamed when she arrived at the hospital for the on-call doctors and nurses to save her newborn baby. John’s mother had never been so afraid in her entire life. She desperately and repeatedly prayed for a miracle.
From then straight through to his teen age years, however, John was plagued by recurrent bronchial infections. He recalls con stantly being sick as a child and his parents were always on guard, overly cautious about letting him play outside, getting wet when it rained and being amongst other kids that had even a minor cough or fever. But it was his parents’ protective, heavy-handed approach that kept him alive and it would be years before he faced another serious, life threaten ing medical event.
It’s easy to give up and lose heart when bad things happen to us but there’s a reason why we climb mountains. The long, unyielding stretches of hardship challenges our persever ance by pushing us to the brink of collapse. But for those able to summon the strength and endurance required to push forward, the gifts of hard work lie in wait on the other side of the mountaintop. There, in plain sight, are the fruits of our labour.

My patient was baptised as John because no one believed that he’d live beyond a few days so it wasn’t until he was released from the hospital following his surgery that he was finally given his real (undisclosed) name. John has been battle-tested from childhood and is prepared for anything that life throws at him. He now knows that his wife and daugh ter, successful career as a lawyer and the love and appreciation of his friends and family were the reward for his climb. And just as Dr King Jr declared, this breath-taking promised land awaits anyone who’s facing overwhelm ing trials but remains bold enough to keep the faith and courageous enough to survive.
The take home message that John wanted to share with readers is the importance of getting medical insurance, paying attention to your health and giving thanks and appre ciation to the people around you. He married his girlfriend who diligently saw him through his health crises and they now have a beauti ful young daughter. As a father, with a deeper insight that one can only obtain after becom ing a parent, he also has immense gratitude for his mother for always comforting, protect ing and taking care of him as a child and as an adult. He couldn’t return to law school for two months and when he did, he walked with a cane so his classmates rallied around him and helped him catch up on all of the classes that he missed. He is forevermore grateful to them and to God for all of his life’s blessings.

John had a birth defect known as esopha geal atresia, where the esophagus is split into two sections making it impossible for food to pass from the mouth to the stomach. It initially went undetected because he was pre viously fed intravenously. His situation was critical and required emergent surgical inter vention. Operating on a newborn is incredibly challenging and his surgeons initially strug gled. John’s atresia was complicated by a blockage or fistula that connected his esophagus to his windpipe, which is why his breathing had become so precarious. It took hours to surgically reconnect the two ends of his esophagus but ultimately the surgery was a success and John was able to breathe and feed without any further obstruction.
He had a fever, a persistently brutal cough, chest pain especially during inhalation and intense fatigue. After three days of no improvement, despite taking over-the-coun ter flu medication and only consuming soup and ginger-ale, John went to see his family physician and was prescribed oral antibiot ics. A day later, his chest and stomach pain intensified. By this time, John was struggling to breathe. His family was mortified by how quickly and without warning his symptoms went from mild to severe. He was rushed to the emergency room at the same hospital where his life had been saved as an infant.
This is The KDK Report.

My friend and patient, hereafter referred to as John, has listened to that speech often over the years, wondering what went through Dr King Jr’s mind while writing it. It has been a constant source of inspiration for John and thinking about it gives him an opportunity to reflect upon his own challenges.
Though nurses immediately transported John who was sweating profusely and in physical distress, to the most critical section of the emergency room, it took three hours for x-rays to be taken. Ultimately, the x-rays were inconclusive and only showed a cloudy mass on the left side of his chest cavity. John was admitted and transported to the floor as soon as a bed became available. At this point his whole body ached. A CT scan of his chest was ordered revealing three remarkably large infected abscesses within his lung cavity that had to be surgically drained. John’s lungs had collapsed and had he not been operated on during that time frame, he in all likelihood would have died. He remained in the hospi tal for two weeks following his surgery. Since then, he fortunately hasn’t experienced any similar symptoms and to this day, John has no idea what caused the abscesses to form.

In 2012, during the Christmas holidays when John, then 36, was on a break from law school, he took a young woman he had just started dating to the carnival. They were joined by a few family members. They went on multiple rides, played games, laughed and enjoyed the typical carnival food offerings like hot dogs, pizza and soft serve ice cream. The speech was in support of economic justice for striking sani tation workers at Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee but Dr King Jr also spoke about having personally faced difficult days. It would end up being the final and most mem orable of his words. The man who tried to change the world through peace died by vio lence. He was assassinated the following day. Prophetically, Dr King Jr said that when looking over the mountaintop, he’d seen the Promised Land and even though he might not get there, he wasn’t afraid. Fear, after all, only cripples us from moving forward and in life, under the harshest of circumstance, you have to be strong to survive.

Other suspi cious incidents came to light, such as hundreds of boxes of electoral materi als being found in a house in Potosí. Despite the clear state ment by the EU, no representation is made that the EU was wrong or has an ulterior motive; such representations have been reserved for, and focussed on, the OAS and particularly the Secretary General. However, it was the Morales government, in the face of the statements by international observ ers of “damaged trust” in the elections result, that invited the OAS to conduct an audit of the result. The OAS did not offer to do so, or to invite itself. Further, the Morales government confirmed, in a signed agreement with the OAS Secretariat, that “the audit findings would be binding”.

THERE are intermittent squabbles in the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), concerning the contro versial general elections of October 20, 2019, in Bolivia. The president, Evo Morales, resigned after these elections amid a storm of protests, by groups within the country, charg ing that they were not free and fair. The conclusion that the election process was improper and not cred ible came from electoral observer missions of the European Union (EU) and the OAS, whose pres ence was requested by the MoralesHowever, government.inthe postelections period, and a subsequent audit of the result conducted by the OAS - again at the request of the Morales govern ment - allegations have been made that somehow the process was a coup d’état orchestrated by Luis Almagro, the OAS Sec retary-General. The point is that the Secretaries General or Chief Executive Officers of regional organisations, such as the EU, the Com monwealth and the OAS, organise electoral observer missions at the request of governments; independent persons of high reputation – usually a former head of government or foreign minister – lead the mission with no interference from Secretariats or Secretaries General in the conduct of theirThework.OAS secretariat did not manufacture the flaws in the 2019 Bolivian elec tions any more than did the EU.No ruling political party that is criticised for a flawed electoral process welcomes such criticism, but their unhappiness does not negate the flaws or the lack of fairness in an elections process. Democracy is served by such criticism. As, inci dentally, it was served in Guyana in 2020 where, were it not for the vigi lance of the electoral observer missions from CARICOM, the EU, the OAS and the Common wealth, the party in power at the time would have snatched the election.
Permanent Council, rep resentatives of the MAS government, which was returned to power in Octo ber 2020, in elections also observed by the OAS, have repeated suggestions that irregularities in the October 20, 2019 elections, which were pointed out by the OAS electoral observation mission, are wrong. Britain’s harsh response to the Mau Mau rebellion against colonial rule.
IN A somber, regal pro cession, Queen Elizabeth II’s flag-draped coffin was driven slowly through the Scottish countryside yes terday from her beloved Balmoral Castle to the Scottish capital of Edin burgh. Mourners packed city streets and highway bridges or lined rural roads with cars and tractors to take part in a historic good bye to the monarch who had reigned for 70 years.
Talk has turned to the lega cies of colonialism, from slavery to corporal punish ment in African schools to looted artifacts held in British institutions. For many, the queen came to represent all of that during her seven decades on the throne.InKenya, where dec ades ago a young Elizabeth learned of her father’s death and her enormous new role as queen, a lawyer named Alice Mugo shared online a photograph of a fading document from 1956. “We cannot blame the queen for all the sufferings that we had at that particu lar time,” Kahindi said.
In Kenya’s capital, Nai robi, resident Max Kahindi remembered the Mau Mau rebellion “with a lot of bit terness” and recalled how some elders were detained or killed. But he said the queen was “a very young lady” then, and he believes someone else likely was running British affairs.

There were few signs of public grief or even inter est in her death across the Middle East, where many still hold Britain responsi ble for colonial actions that drew much of the region’s borders and laid the groundwork for many of its modern conflicts. Swiatek raised a clenched fist and yelled, “Come on!” Then Jabeur did make things interesting, briefly.
Swiatek, like Jabeur, travels with a sports psy chologist, and it took some fortitude to finish this one off. At 6-5 in the second set, Swiatek held her first championship point. Right before Jabeur served, Swiatek jogged over to the sideline to change rackets — an unusual choice at that moment. When action resumed, Swiatek missed a backhand. That could have been tough to recover from. Indeed, Jabeur pushed things to the tiebreaker, which she then led 5-4. But Swiatek steeled herself, took the last three points and soon was accept ing the silver trophy and a $2.6 million winner’s check, joking: “I’m really glad that is not in cash.”
Jabeur earned three break chances in that game, any one of which would have allowed her to serve for the set. She could not cash in there, though, miss ing a groundstroke on each.
