The 2016 PABCON Senior Championships has high stakes for the region’s top competitors. The top eight men’s teams and top eight women’s teams will

qualify for the combined 2017 World Championships in Kuwait. This will be determined by a combined total pinfall from the following categories in each division - top four singles scores, top two doubles scores, top trios set and pinfall in team competition. The top two countries will qualify for the World Games, which is held every fourth year and next will be contested in Wroclaw, Poland, in July 2017. This will be a combined pinfall total for the top two men and top two women for each country during the 24 games at the PABCON event. The United States, Venezuela and Colombia previously qualified for the 2017 World Games through the PABCON Champion of Champions event in Mexico last April.

Semi-final playoffs heat up

PLAY ACTION: The Bahamas Government Departmental Basketball Association continued its semi-final playoffs at the AF Adderley Gymnasium on Wednesday night. While the Airport Authority Avengers faced the Police Crimestoppers, the Bamboo Shack Cybots lead their series against the Bahamas Department of Correctional Challengers. After losing game one 101-94 to the Crimestoppers on Saturday night, the Avengers rebounded for a 98-90 victory in game two on Monday. The Cybots, winners of game one 84-76 on Saturday, took game two 95-91 on Monday. Photos by Tim Clarke/The Tribune

Youth Flag Football League debut in Winton Saturday By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE profile of flag football continues to increase in the country and a new initiative will now focus on youth development. The Bahamas Flag Football League (BFFL) will debut its Bahamas Youth Flag Football League on September 17 at the Winton Rugby Field. The league is designated to be a co-ed league for boys and girls, aged six to 17 years. BFFL President Jayson Clarke said the league sought to capitalise on the popularity of the adult leagues throughout the country and offer new opportunities to aspiring players. “I think the biggest factor in

getting the youth league up and running was the fact that we saw the potential opportunities for the young kids. “While the adult league is going on there are scores of young kids playing at the field and then when we look at it, those opportunities for those kids who have the knowledge of football, it allows them to be better positioned for scholarships, education and possibly a professional career. “Looking at those things and using football as a tool to help them develop those skills and develop the discipline that comes with learning a sport we saw the need to capitalise on this opportunity,” he said. “The potential for a youth league is always great because parents are always looking to get

their kids involved in something. I do see this league taking off very quickly, even though we will try to manage its growth. Of course volunteers will always be a challenge but we do see a similar potential at the youth level and hope to see a similar success as we have had at the adult level,” he said. Opening day and registration takes place this Saturday at the Winton Rugby Centre from 2-4pm. The registration fee is $35. Interested persons can email the BFFL with interest at bahamasflagfootballleague@gmail. com and registration forms will be forwarded. The league will also serve as a feeder system for the BFFL and future national teams. “By nature of our own adult league we have already found sev-

eral volunteers who will assist us with coaching the kids. The system is set up in such a way that kids as young as six up to adults can play once this is started. “The youth league is bracketed in groups and that also can serve as a feeder league into our adult programme,” Clarke said. “The hope is always that teams will adopt teams within the youth league and let it also serve as a mentoring option for adults to mentor and coach the kids and build strong relationships amongst them. “The kids will not only get the counselling from their parents but from others who can play a significant role in their lives.” The Abaco Youth Football Association is currently the lone youth development league playing

flag football. The sport could also be on its way into the school system. The National Sports Secretariat, jointly headed by the Ministers of Education, Science and Technology and Youth, Sports and Culture, recently announced that they were broadening their base to include more National Sports Championships this year for High School Sports. The National Sports Secretariat, formed in 2015, will be hosting a series of National Championships for the third consecutive year. But according to Evon Wisdom, the Sports Unit Director for the Ministry of Education, they have extended the programme to several new sports – including flag football.

THE TRIBUNE

Scores are close but long season ahead By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net WEEK 2 New York Jets at Buffalo Bills RENALDO: In a perfect world, they both lose. That’s not the world we occupy. In this world, Donald Trump has a legit shot at becoming President of the United States, The Pats look the same with Gronk or Brady and Baha Mar gets to keep its lights on while we suffer through awful service and higher electricity rates. Someone has to win. JETS over Bills SANNIE: How would I ever pick Buffalo over New York? Still waiting on my New York dream to come true by the way. Just putting it out there. JETS over Bills San Francisco 49ers at Carolina Panthers RENALDO: Is Blaine Gabbert the only quarterback that can win a game 28-0 and trend downward? He’s as awful as Carlos Hyde is great. Carolina’s run defence has a lot to prove after they were owned by CJ Anderson, but I wouldn’t bet on that happening. The Panthers have two concerns at this point in the season, keeping Cam upright and not leaving the game in the hands of Graham Gano. PANTHERS over Niners SANNIE: Even though my boo lost last week, I am still going to ride with him. #Camoveverything PANTHERS over Niners Dallas Cowboys at Washington Racial Slurs SANNIE: Of course I’m going to choose Dallas, it’s a hop skip and a jump away from the birthplace of Queen Beyonce. COWBOYS over Racial Slurs RENALDO: It’s a good thing this game won’t be close enough for Terrance Williams’ “newborn baby like awareness” to play a factor in the outcome. A few things here work in the Cowboys favour - the Racial Slurs looked feeble against the running game, Dak Prescott looked like a guy in command of the offence and if all else fails all he has to do is go at the “Whoever vs. Breeland” matchup all day. Trust me it works. It would be great if the Cowboys made a play over 20 yards

WEEK 1 AWARDS The “I Have No Business Being This Good This Early” Award presented by the debut of the Yeezy 350 and 750 cleats – Carson Wentz. In his NFL debut he went 22-37 for 278 yards and two touchdowns. No one saw that coming. The “Sometimes It’s Better To Shut Up…Even If It’s Your Job To Talk” Award presented by Lil Wayne’s appearance on Undisputed – Trent Dilfer. Not only did Wentz firmly entrench himself on the wrong side of history with the worst anti-Kap argument any of us have ever heard, he doubled down by saying as a career backup, he did an excellent job of shutting up and doing as he was told. The “This Could Go From Bad To Worse In A Heartbeat” Award presented by the week from hell for the Hillary Clinton campaign – The entire Browns organisation. You’re already the Browns and you follow that up with a loss to a rookie quarterback in his debut while also losing your new “star” quarterback for at least 10 games. I won’t ask what else could go wrong because Josh Gordon isn’t back on the field yet. this game though. COWBOYS over Racial Slurs Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers RENALDO: This game is just not the same without Vontaze Burfict. Sure he’s always the villain but you need the villain every story .Without the Joker, Batman would’ve just been a weirdo in long johns with PTSD running amuck in Gotham. Aside from the obvious cheap shots, late hits and almost fights that we know won’t turn into a fight... what I’m looking forward to is the Antonio Brown vs. AJ Green matchup. No they won’t play against each other but that never stopped us from hyping up the Brady Manning matchups. BENGALS over Steelers SANNIE: Andy Dalton looks very scary. It’s almost kind of serial killer-ish. I’ll pass. STEELERS over Bengals New Orleans Saints at New York Giants RENALDO: Drew Brees threw seven touchdowns last year against this Giants defence. In one game. At this time it’s only right that I remind myself and all Dolphin fans that our organisation once thought it was a better idea to sign Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees. I’m not sure if Culpepper threw seven touchdowns as a Dolphin. I digress…Ben McAdoo is far too evil to allow that to happen again. No you’re thinking of the NBA Hall of Famer, not that guy… Ben McAddo, the New Giants head coach sporting the vitange 70s porn ‘stache. I

wouldn’t trust that guy with anything, but I’ve learned that people with those traits make for insanely great football coaches. GIANTS over Saints SANNIE: The Saints let the Raiders beat them and caused Eddie to be happy. They are on time out. GIANTS over Saints Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots SANNIE: Last week, I tried so hard to be a good wife, but the Dolphins cost me, so this week I’m going to follow my brain and Tom Brady. PATS over Dolphins RENALDO: Kenny Stills made one great play last week, kneeling during the national anthem. After that it was all downhill from there. Stills’ ineptitude aside, there was a lot to hate about Miami’s week one performance – Tannehill playing like more of a rookie than any of the actual rookies, the line allowing four sacks and this team still wearing this playful turquoise that intimidates no one. On the flipside, the Patriots continue to trot out anyone in the world and Bill Belichick continues to make it work. Watch when he changes the settings on his “players nobody wants” app from “white wide receivers” to “white cornerbacks.” It’ll be great. DOLPHINS over Pats Kansas City Chiefs at Houston Texans SANNIE: Beyonce’s Birthplace. TEXANS over Chiefs

HOW THE EXPERTS FARED THE STANDINGS AFTER WEEK 1 AP Pro-Picks Sancheska Naughty Leo B Ricardo Renaldo

RENALDO: It’s hard not to buy into the Chiefs after last week’s comeback. That may have been the death knell in the “Alex Smith as a game manager” premise. This Texans team is much different than the one who got dominated 30-0 in last year’s Wild Card game. Swap out Brian Hoyer, Alfred Blue and Cecil Shorts III with The Brockweiler, Lamar Miller and Will Fuller and it makes a difference. Enough of a difference to win this time around. TEXANS over Chiefs Tennessee Titans at Detroit Lions RENALDO: The Lions’ running game was impressive last week. I thought this team would roll over for a robust 2-14 season, but their backfield came out and rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns. As bad as the Titans offence looked in week one, their defence didn’t allow a touchdown and AP was limited to just 31 yards. TITANS over Lions SANNIE: Marcus Mariota is kind of cute, in a nerdy sort of way. TITANS over Lions

Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns RENALDO: RGIII being hurt trying to scramble for a meaningless first down in a game long decided late in a fourth quarter is perhaps the most RGIII way to be placed on injured reserve. It’s almost as if the Browns receive none of the residual effects of LeBron ending the city’s curse. It’s good to have these loveable losers back though. The Cleveland Browns are on the clock. RAVENS over Browns SANNIE: Like I said last week, I gave up the Brown, and the Browns RAVENS over Browns Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams RENALDO: Ok, on second thought maybe the Rams are on the clock. After almost losing to the Dolphins, how disgusted were the Seahawks this week? They swapped out Taniela Tupou for Will Tukuafu at fullback. The Rams are in (even more) trouble. SEAHAWKS over Rams SANNIE: Heyyyyyyyyyyyy Russell SEAHAWKS over Rams Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arizona Cardinals RENALDO: I’m a huge fan of Bruce Arians’ leadership style. Arians didn’t make generalisations when voicing his displeasure on his team’s play. He called out people by name. Anyone was a target – Robert Nkemdiche, Justin Bethel, Chandler Jones, DJ Swearinger, but he should have called out the entire secondary. It’s easy to write off Jameis Winston’s four touchdown performance against a weak Atlanta defence, but the Cards’ defence is supposed to be legit. I use legit loosely because they just lost at home to a Pats team without Brady or Gronk. CARDS over Bucs SANNIE: I have to go against my brother, since he is rooting for me to lose and all. CARDS over Bucs Jacksonville Jaguars at San Diego Chargers RENALDO: What’s weird about the Jaguars is that they run more play actions than any other team in the league…but have an awful running game. Bortles and the passing game were on point last week, but the Jags gained just 48 yards on the ground in 26 attempts. That was against a Packers

defence not known for stopping the run. The Chargers got a head start on the gut punching loss they usually reserved for December and January. Not only did they get that on opening day, but they lost Keenan Allen before his breakout season could get started. JAGS over Chargers SANNIE: Well since both of these teams lost last week, I’m going to just go with the Jaguars. JAGS over Chargers Atlanta Falcons at Oakland Raiders RENALDO: Sources say Jack Del Rio walked around the team’s facility shouting “Raiders!” at team personnel. Not in the “I support my organisation and our prospects for the future” kind of way, but in the “Bahamian 90s gang member” kind of way. Either one means this should be a very interesting season in Oakland. RAIDERS over Falcons SANNIE: Like I would ever choose the Raiders FALCONS over Raiders Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos RENALDO: How excited is CJ Anderson for this game. After watching Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick basically play on Rookie mode last week, Anderson has to figure he can get at least 200 yards and three touchdowns. It’ll be interesting to see if the Broncos’ style of play changes this week after Darian Stewart and Brandon Marshall were fined for their hits on Cam Netwon in week one. It’ll also be interesting to see if the Colts have advanced to the practical application of defence yet….or still sticking with theory. COLTS over Broncos SANNIE: The Broncos beat my boo last week, even though I should be loyal and not choose them, I also want to win. BRONCOS over Colts Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings RENALDO: It took two defensive touchdowns for Shaun Hill to get a win. I’ll never be sold on him. PACKERS over Vikings SANNIE: Since I have recently started watching Vikings again, I’m going to go with them but honestly, I don’t know the difference in these teams. VIKINGS over Packers Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears RENALDO: That Carson Wentz thing just happened and it happened right away. The Bears couldn’t protect Jay Cutler and allowed five sacks. Conner Barwin and Mychal Kendricks aren’t JJ Watt and Jadeveon Clowney but it doesn’t take much to force Jay Cutler into being… himself. BEARS over Eagles SANNIE: A bear is obviously tougher than an Eagle. BEARS over Eagles

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: The Buffalo Bills face the New York Jets tonight in week 2. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

‘Redskins make it a shootout but don’t have enough arrows to win’ OKAY I went 9-7 last week, but if not for a missed field goal in Arizona and a mental breakdown in Dallas I would be a solid 11-5, but almost only counts in horse racing and with hand grenades. So I’ve switched up the approach this week, short and sweet until about week four or five of the NFL season. That should allow some of these ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ teams to figure out exactly who they are, and where they are going. THURSDAY’S GAME Jets vs Bills Injury bug already ravaging the Bills. ‘My Patriots got a big win last week so I’m overjoyed’ THEY said the Pats without Tom, without Gronk and with all the other issues had no chance down in the desert last week. It was said that the Dolphins would be slaughtered by a focused and energised Seattle squad. There was some talk about the Eagles being bad, the Texans being slow, the Jets being strong and the Broncos being done. I even heard that the Rams could stun a few teams - well that last one was all me. The rest was said by other so-called experts and all proved to be wrong. Well, that is why we have Week 1 in the NFL, to weed through all of the subjective commentary and get right down to the cold, hard facts. And so, here we are. Week 1 is in the books and I, like many of my sports colleagues, am looking at or near a .500 record. My Patriots got a big win last week and I finished at 8-8 with my picks, the former makes up for everything else so I’m overjoyed to say the least. As we advance into Week 2, there is a better understanding of all 32 teams and their ability to produce for four quarters. While I’m high on a couple of teams that I didn’t find an interest in last week, there are a couple of teams that I started the season high on and today I’m, at best, “iffy”.

MY PICKS New York Jets (0-1) @ Buffalo Bills (0-1) Both the Jets and the Bills were high on my radar heading into the season. Most had the Bills being a dark horse, capable of stunning the Patriots and winning the AFC East. While I wasn’t so high on that trend, I believed they could manage to snag that second wild-card spot. From early on, I pegged the Jets to be, along with my Pats, the cream of the crop in the East. However, both teams ended up with losses in week 1. The Bills struggled against the Ravens and the Jets couldn’t overcome a late rally by the Bengals. This week, the two longtime foes square off on Thursday Night Football and I think defence will be the order of the day. The Jets, in my opinion, have the better defensive unit. While Darrell Revis looked like a shell of his former self last week, I feel that the Jets have constructed a better eight-man front. The Bills have had the Jets’ number in recent match-ups, single-handedly keeping the them out of postseason play last year. The Bills are out for retribution this week. But I think they fall short. Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) I love it when AFC North teams not named the Browns match up. This week we have the best the division has to offer. Last week, the combination of Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger proved why the are considered the best QB/WR tandem in the game, connecting for 126 yards and two scores. This week, they will see another formidable duo - Andy Dalton and A J Green. When two high quality teams square off, the rule of thumb says you go with the home team. STEELERS Tennessee Titans (0-1) @ Detroit Lions (1-0) Lions snuck away with a win last week against the Colts. They are at home this week against the Titans, who are looking for win number one. My heart wants to ride with the Titans, but my mind is telling me that the Lions are the better team. LIONS

Baltimore Ravens (1-0) @ Cleveland Browns (0-1) Remember what I said about AFC North matchups? Yes, Cleveland still sucks. RAVENS Dallas Cowboys (0-1) @ Washington Redskins (0-1) The Cowboys had their chances last week against the Giants. If it were not for one or two mind-numbing plays, they could be 1-0. The Redskins showed more flaws than promise in their season opener. But Josh Norman wants to make up for his defence’s poor performance. REDSKINS New Orleans Saints (0-1) @ New York Giants (1-0) Please, if you are free Sunday at 1pm and want to see a really good football game, this is it. Points will come in bunches. Enjoy! After watching the team on HBO’s Hardknocks, I was convinced that they were ready for something special this year. I was so wrong. Expect a blowout here SEAHAWKS Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) @ Arizona Cardinals (0-1) The birds are thinking SuperBowl. Two early season home loses could doom that. He has to this week in order for the Vikings to have any chance in this one. I think we will see Sam Bradford by the second half. Real Madrid avoids setback as Aguero scores hat trick for City By SAMUEL PETREQUIN AP Sports Writer PARIS (AP) — Trailing until the 89th minute against Sporting Lisbon, Real Madrid was reminded that becoming the first club to retain the trophy in the Champions League era won’t be an easy task. The 11-time champions needed a late winner from substitute Alvaro Morata to prevail 2-1 in their opening game in the competition on a Wednesday night also marked by Premier League champion Leicester’s maiden Champions League win. Playing against his former team, Cristiano Ronaldo was on the score sheet at Santiago Bernabeu stadium as he levelled with one minute left from a free kick before Morata’s winner in added time. But the Portugal star was unable to match Sergio Aguero, who netted a hat trick with Manchester City. After a one-year absence in the tournament, Dortmund celebrated its return by putting six goals past Legia Warsaw, while French clubs Monaco and Lyon made both winning starts. • Here’s a roundup of all the action yesterday: GROUP E Thrashed by Tottenham 4-1 at White Hart Lane last season in Europa League, Monaco took its revenge on Europe’s biggest club stage with a 2-1 win at Wembley. The match was moved to England’s national stadium because of construction work at Spurs’ home ground and drew 85,011 fans, a club-record home attendance and a record for an English club. The crowd did not impress the French league leaders as Monaco playmaker Bernardo Silva, who impressed throughout, opened the scoring after only 15 minutes before Thomas Lemar doubled the lead near the half-hour mark. Spurs reduced the deficit through Toby Alderweireld’s header in the 45th minute but couldn’t make the most of lots of possession in the second half. Bayer Leverkusen failed to hold onto a 2-0 lead in the group’s other game, letting CSKA Moscow come from behind and rescue a point in a 2-2 draw. All four goals were scored in the first half. Leverkusen missed plenty of opportunities after racing to a two-goal lead in the space of 15

(AP Photo/Daniel Ochoa de Olza) minutes with goals from Admir Mehmedi and Hakan Calhanoglu. The Russian champion responded with two goals in three minutes courtesy of Alan Dzagoev and Roman Eremenko. GROUP F Sporting showed it has the quality to get through the group phase with a spirited performance that stifled the defending champions. But Zinedine Zidane’s coaching skills made the difference, as his decision to bring in Morata and James Rodriguez paid off. Rodriguez provided the assist, curling a perfect ball for Morata’s header. “It’s a coach’s job to make substitutions and we’re happy that they paid off,” Zidane said. “You make substitutions in order to change the game and that’s what happened today. This is Real Madrid and we know we can always turn things around in a minute. We played a little better after conceding and we finally did it.”

Sporting had the match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium largely under control and was rewarded when Brazilian midfielder Bruno Cesar gave scored with a shot from inside the area in the 48th minute. Ronaldo equalised from an 89th minute free kick. Borussia Dortmund, the 1997 champion, enjoyed a stroll in the park at Polish champion Legia Warsaw, scoring with six different players in a 6-0 rout. GROUP G Riyad Mahrez scored twice as Leicester opened its maiden Champions League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Belgian champion Club Brugge. Sixteen years after its last European game, the English Premier League champion was unfazed by the occasion and got off to a strong start, with Marc Albrighton scoring after just five minutes. Mahrez then curled a free kick home and scored his second goal from the penalty spot. The victory gave Leicester the lead in

its group after FC Porto and Copenhagen drew 1-1.

winner Sevilla in their opening match.

GROUP H Playing with a depleted side, Lyon relied on its homegrown players and the class of teenager Maxwel Cornet to open its Champions League campaign in style with a 3-0 defeat of Dinamo Zagreb. Lacking five regular starters, including striker Alexandre Lacazette, Lyon dominated with a fine display of onetouch football. It quickly opened the scoring courtesy of Corentin Tolisso’s goal. Jordan Ferri, who honed his skills at Lyon’s renowned academy with Tolisso, made it 2-0 four minutes into the second half from Cornet’s assist. The 19-year-old Cornet then turned from supplier to scorer after playing a slick one-two with Tolisso. Dinamo players were unlucky in the closing stages of the game, hitting the bar twice. Lyon tops the group after Juventus was held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Europa League

GROUP C Sergio Aguero kept up his explosive start to the season by scoring a hat trick for Manchester City in a 4-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach in their rescheduled Champions League match. A 24-hour delay, after the original Group C fixture was postponed because of torrential rain, didn’t put City off its stride as coach Pep Guardiola earned his seventh straight victory to open his tenure at the English club. Aguero has now scored nine goals in five games this season after tapping in the opening goal in the ninth minute, converting a penalty in the 28th and completing his hat trick by rounding the goalkeeper in a one-on-one chance in the 77th. Aguero was replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho, who wrapped up the scoring in stoppage time with a powerful close-range strike.

Sparks hold off Mercury 90-85 to snap 3-game skid LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nneka Ogwumike had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Chelsea Gray scored a career-high 23 points and the Los Angeles Sparks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 90-85 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night.

Jantel Lavender added 17 points for Los Angeles (258), ranked second in the AP power poll. Phoenix guard DeWanna Bonner made the first of two free throws with 1:15 left. She missed the second, ran down the rebound and Candice Dupree hit a long jump-

er to pull the Mercury to 8482. But Gray answered with a pullup jumper and after a Phoenix turnover, Gray hit two free throws with 23.4 seconds left for an 88-82 lead. Bonner had 20 points for eighth-ranked Phoenix (14-18), which is one game

ahead of Washington for the final playoff spot. Phoenix tied it at 77 with 3:29 left, but Los Angles scored the next seven points. Gray hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left on the shot clock, and Ogwumike and Gray each made two free throws for an 84-77 lead.

GERMANS SEEK EUROPE’S TRUST FOR ‘24 BID AMID WORLD CUP PROBE By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Germany is pressing ahead with its bid to host the 2024 European Championship, insisting yesterday that its soccer leadership should be trusted because it is not linked to mounting allegations of wrongdoing against the 2006 World Cup campaign. Swiss federal prosecutors have opened criminal proceedings against Franz Beckenbauer and the three other German members

of the 2006 organising committee. The four are suspected of fraud, money laundering, criminal mismanagement and misappropriation relating to a payment of 6.7 million euros ($7.3 million) to FIFA in 2005. The Swiss authorities and FIFA have been investigating the German bid since last year, with no end in sight for the case. But the German federation (DFB) has not been deterred from continuing its pursuit of soccer’s second biggest national team competition after the World Cup.

Germany withdrew from bidding for matches at the continentwide Euro 2020 to focus on bringing the 2024 edition to the country in its entirety. German federation president Reinhard Grindel said Wednesday that the 2006 bid investigation is “no problem because we said that we would make our bid transparent” with unspecified good governance processes. “We have new leadership in the DFB and so all FAs trust us,” Grindel, who was elected DFB treasurer in 2013, told The Asso-

ciated Press. “These people who are at the center of the investigation have no influence now in the DFB and so we are not responsible for what happened in 2006.” The 2006 tournament became known as Germany’s “Summer Fairytale” and the country is seeking a replay. “It’s our ambition to host Euro 2024 because we are well prepared,” Grindel said in an interview on the sidelines of the UEFA Congress in Athens. “We have the stadiums, we have the infrastructure. “We showed with the organ-

isation of the (UEFA) under-19 tournament (in July) that we can do it, that we have great experience and so I think our bid will be a good bid.” The Nordic group of soccer federations from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden said in April they wanted to host the European Championship either in 2024 or 2028. That bid would seek to stage events in Iceland and the Faroe Islands, too. There is no timeframe for the bidding process or a date for the vote.

Platini era ends as UEFA elects Ceferin as head By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Michel Platini reluctantly handed over the reins of power in European soccer to Aleksander Ceferin, a little-known Slovenian lawyer who won the UEFA presidential election by a landslide yesterday. Ceferin will complete Platini’s fouryear term through 2019 while the disgraced former France captain returns to his FIFA-imposed exile to continue serving a four-year ban over an improper payment. Before Ceferin beat UEFA vice president Michael van Praag 42-13 in the secret ballot, Platini was given special dispensation by FIFA’s ethics judge to bid farewell to European soccer leaders. Platini assured UEFA delegates he has a “clear conscience” over the legitimacy of the 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million) he received from FIFA in 2011 that led to his downfall four years later. After Platini was initially suspended last October by FIFA, a political vacuum opened up in European soccer that was capitalized on by the elite clubs to influence the future of the Champions League. Ceferin’s immediate challenge is to heal the rifts created by the secret deal, which he opposes, to increase guaranteed Champions League places for clubs from the powerful leagues of England, Spain, Germany, and Italy. “The most important thing is to give that leadership back to UEFA that clearly we have not had since Michel Platini had to step down last year,” UEFA vice president David Gill said. With only 2 1/2 years until having to renew his mandate, Ceferin will have little time to waste to convince UEFA’s members it was right to entrust someone with only five years of experience around the governing body with its top job. “Some people may have said that I am not a leader, that I am too young and too inexperienced to become the next UEFA president,” said Ceferin, a father-of three from Ljubljana. “It’s

not because you repeat again and again, loud and clear ‘I am a leader’ that you are a leader. If you have to do it you are probably not a leader.” Ceferin, aged 48, said combining running a law firm in the former Yugoslav re- CEFERIN (AP) public of Slovenia with leading the country’s soccer federation since 2011 required him to be “creative, strong and inspiring.” “You can say that I am young and experienced but I honestly think it disrespectful for all small and medium-sized federations who, 365 days a year, have to do more with less,” Ceferin said. Reinhard Grindel, the German federation president, viewed Ceferin’s election as a vote against the UEFA establishment, including Van Praag of the Netherlands. “This big majority shows that a lot of FAs ... have a wish to get a new dynamic in UEFA from outside the executive committee,” Grindel said. “Michael van Praag had seven years the chance to give a lot of reform ideas in his work in the executive committee and he did not. “So a lot of my colleagues think, focusing on his speech today, that it is a problem to say now ‘Let’s start very new at zero’ after being part of the executive committee for seven years.” Ceferin is the seventh president in the 62-year history of UEFA, which every four years organises the European Championship — the wealthiest competition between national teams after the World Cup. He said he speaks five languages, is a black belt in karate, and has crossed the Sahara Desert five times, four by car and once on motorbike. He will take charge at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, after a campaign clouded by accusations that he was being assisted by Gianni Infantino, the organisation’s general secretary before being elected FIFA president in

February. Ceferin’s campaign emerged in May, shortly after Infantino travelled to Slovenia to open a national soccer centre. Weeks later, FIFA appointed Tomaz Vesel as an independent auditor overseeing its billion-dollar annual income – and Infantino’s salary and bonuses. Vesel is also from Slovenia and plays on a veterans’ soccer team with Ceferin. Infantino said it was a “pity” critics suggested he influenced the election of one of soccer’s six regional confederations that sit under FIFA. “This is an insult on the intelligence of all the national associations and those who are voting,” Infantino said after the vote. “You have seen there was a democratic process. Infantino was separated on the front row from Platini, whose self-proclaimed destiny he assumed by becoming FIFA president. Despite being banned from holding any position of power or involvement in soccer, Platini was allowed by FIFA’s ethics judge to address UEFA delegates on Wednesday as a “gesture of humanity.” “Be assured that I have a clear conscience, that I’m convinced I did not make the slightest mistake, and that I’m continuing the legal battle,” Platini said. “I want to thank everyone in this room who had the courage and loyalty to support me during the past months.”

Rizzo’s 2 HRs help Cubs beat Cardinals, clinch playoff spot By JOE HARRIS Associated Press ST LOUIS (AP) — Jon Lester gave the Chicago Cubs a much-needed boost. Anthony Rizzo hit a pair of home runs and Lester pitched eight dominant innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the St Louis Cardinals 7-0 yesterday to clinch at least a wild-card playoff berth. The Cubs improved their MLB-best record to 93-52 and their magic number is one to clinch their first National League Central title since 2008. Chicago secured a playoff berth because St Louis and San Francisco are the only teams that could catch them in the standings, but since those teams open a four-game series on Thursday both teams wouldn’t be able to do so. “I’ll tell you, if you were in that dugout at the beginning of the game, the guys were dead on their feet,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “To play the kind of game we did today — really hot, last game of a long road trip — I give them a ton of credit. (Lester) really played into all that.” The Cardinals began the day a half-game behind the New York Mets and a full game behind the Giants for one of the two wild-card spots. Lester (17-4) allowed four base runners, none of which got past first. Cubs catcher David Ross threw out two Cardinals trying to steal second and Lester faced just two batters over the minimum. Cardinals outfielder

Brandon Moss called Lester one of the best in the game. “Today was one of those days were he had both working and he wasn’t missing over the middle and he was even throwing some curveballs and change-ups to keep you off of everything,” Moss said. Lester improved to 7-0 with a 1.02 ERA in his last nine starts. He also helped his cause at the plate with an RBI single in the third. “I’m just trying to give a good at-bat,” Lester said. “He elevated a changeup for me and I got it far enough out there to give us a run.” Rizzo’s two-run homer in the ninth gave him 31 homers and 101 RBIs on the season. He is the second Cubs left-handed hitter in franchise history to post multiple 30 home run and 100 RBI seasons (Billy Williams did it in 1965, 1970 and 1972). “Billy Williams, his numbers speak for himself and he’s done it so many years, so it’s a really good feeling,” Rizzo said. Ross’ two-run homer in the fifth snapped a 0-for-8 streak and it was his first home run since Aug. 17. St. Louis starter Carlos Martinez (14-8) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings. Martinez started off strong, striking out the side in the first and four of the first six batters he faced. Five of his nine strikeouts came on called third strikes. He entered the game having allowed just 12 homers this season and his home run per nine innings average of 0.63 was second in the Na-

tional League to the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard (0.52). Ross’ home run was just third by a right-handed batter against Martinez, who had his four winning decisions streak snapped. The loss dropped the Cardinals’ home record to 33-41, assuring St. Louis of its first losing record at home since 1999 when it played in Busch Stadium II. While clinching at least a wild card spot is nice, the Cubs look forward to wrapping up the division at home this weekend, preferably tomorrow. “Let’s do it,” Maddon said. “The sooner, the better. Then we can make our appropriate plans going forward and really set things up to make our best push.” DODGERS 2, YANKEES 0 NEW YORK (AP) — Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw pitched five nearly perfect innings before Justin Turner hit an RBI double off Dellin Betances in a two-run ninth. The Dodgers took advantage of errors by second baseman Starlin Castro and Betances (3-5) to increase their NL West lead to five games over San Francisco. The Yankees completed a 7-3 homestand and remained two games behind Toronto for the second AL wild card. Next up, they begin an 11-game trip — their longest of the season — to Boston, Tampa Bay and Toronto. Kershaw gave up one hit without a walk, pitching through two rain delays in his first career start at Yankee Stadium. Luis Avilan (2-0) pitched

1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Kenley Janson struck out three in the ninth for his 44th save. NATIONALS 1, METS 0 WASHINGTON (AP) — Tanner Roark pitched seven scoreless innings and Wilson Ramos homered in the seventh inning for the game’s only run as Washington beat New York. With one out in the seventh, Ramos hit his 21st home run deep over the center-field wall on the first pitch from Fernando Salas (0-1). The Nationals have won five of six. Roark (15-8) allowed three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks, one intentional. Reliever Blake Treinen pitched the eighth and Mark Melancon got the final three outs for his 42 save. PADRES 3, GIANTS 1 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Madison Bumgarner missed a chance at his milestone 100th career win and San Francisco wasted another chance for a potential push in the NL West, losing to San Diego to be swept by the division’s second-to-last-place club. On Tuesday night, San Francisco’s bullpen blew a three-run lead in the ninth and the Giants failed to gain ground. Bumgarner (14-9) gave up three runs over 6 2/3 innings. Luis Perdomo (8-9) allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings of four-hit ball. Brandon Maurer finished for his 10th save.

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 1 TORONTO (AP) — Alex Cobb pitched 6 2/3 innings to win for the first time in almost two years and Kevin Kiermaier and Corey Dickerson hit tworun homers for Tampa Bay.

Cobb (1-0) allowed one run and two hits to win for the first time since Sept. 23, 2014, against Boston. Reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson sat out his third straight game for Toronto and was scheduled to get an MRI on his sore right hip.

Heat forward Chris Bosh: ‘I’m ready to play’ after clots By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer MIAMI (AP) — Chris Bosh has decided he’s ready to play for the Miami Heat again. He’ll soon find out if the Heat agree. Bosh, whose last two seasons were cut short by blood clots, said in a podcast released yesterday that he’s healthy and plans to be with his team for training camp that starts September 27 in the Bahamas. He said he has not been cleared to play, and did not address if any new clots have formed in recent months. “We released a statement back in May saying as soon as I’m ready to play, as soon as possible, we’ll play,” Bosh said. “And I’m ready.” Bosh made the comments on the “Open Run” podcast, part of LeBron James’ digital platform called Uninterrupted. He had been almost completely silent about the issue since the second clot saga began with the discovery of one shortly

after he arrived in Toronto on February 11 for All-Star weekend events. Bosh did not reveal that clot when he did interviews the following day. On the podcast, he expressed frustration over not being able to return for Miami’s playoff run last spring, said this offseason was a struggle and discussed how the bloodthinning regimen utilised by NHL player Tomas Fleischmann — whose career was also threatened by clots — was something he found intriguing. “I’m not the first athlete to do this regimen,” said Bosh, who did not specifically say if he’s on bloodthinners. Bosh’s representatives did not immediately respond to request seeking clarification. Bosh went on bloodthinners after each of his first two known episodes with blood clots. Athletes in contact sports are generally discouraged from playing when taking such medication because of the heightened risks of bleeding and other complications.

tices and games and allows enough time to ensure that they’re out of his system when he needs to play. He takes pills in the offseason and gets the medication via injections during the season. “It stays in your system only for the dosage you put in,” Fleischmann told The Associated Press. “You know exactly how many hours your blood is thin. After that it goes away and you can do whatever you want.” Teammates have said they expect to see Bosh during camp. He has released some video clips and photos of his recent workouts in Los Angeles — including one with former Heat teammate Dwyane Wade, now a member of the Chicago Bulls. But Bosh has not been on the practice floor in Miami with teammates for informal pre-camp workouts. “Chris’ timetable is just a little different than everybody else,” Heat captain Udonis Haslem said. “We have to be mindful and we

HEAT forward Chris Bosh (1) looks for an opening past Spurs guard Tony Parker (9) in the first half of a game in Miami. (AP) Fleischmann has managed to return, and connected with Bosh through their agents this summer. “He asked how I’m doing it and how it works, how I was able to play hockey,” said Fleischmann, a former member of the Florida Panthers. “I explained it to him. ... When I spoke to him he was pretty confident

that he could play again and he wants to do everything he could to get back in the game.” Fleischmann — who expects to be on thinners for the rest of his life — was originally told he would never play hockey again because of clots. He told Bosh of his process, one where he takes thinners after prac-

have to be conscious of the things that are important. And the thing that’s most important is that when Chris needs to be ready that he’s ready.” Bosh cited a recent tweet from Heat managing general partner Micky Arison as an indicator that he will be welcomed back. Bosh has three years remaining on his contract and will make about $76 million in those seasons, whether he returns to play or not. “I’m in incredible shape; at least decent enough,” Bosh said. “I look good when I take my shirt off. ... But in all due seriousness, and especially with Micky Arison saying ‘hey, see you at camp,’ I think it’s moving forward. I have no reason to believe that it’s not. And, you know, we’ll finish this.” Bosh said he “absolutely” will be at camp. “It is my contractual and professional obligation to be there,” Bosh said, adding, “Will I be cleared? I don’t know. That’s out of my hands. But I will play basketball in the NBA.”
