IN THE September 15 Nassau Guardian editorial titled “Pintard must stay focused,” the writer, who I strongly believe could be Juan McCartney, took aim at Coalition of Inde pendents Leader Lincoln Bain for leading a protest against the Progressive Lib eral Party’s plan to amend the Bahamas Nationality Act. I have lost count of the number of times this editorial has referenced Dr Hubert Minnis being rejected by the Bahamian people. I recall McCart ney’s vociferous opposition to Minnis, which is his dem ocratic right. However, I am under the assumption that media professionals should demonstrate some modi cum of impartiality when it comes to politics. Based on the anti-FNM tenor of these opinion pieces, Michael Pintard might be inclined to take The Nassau Guardian’s advice with a grain of salt.
If I am interpreting the September 15 Trib une article on this subject correctly, the PLP is plan ning on amending this Act through Parliamentary legislation, rather than through a referendum. The 2016 constitutional referendum was outright rejected by the Bahamian people. The talk on the ground was that Bahamian women who had children for foreign men did so on the basis of their children acquiring the nationality of their fathers. Even today, many pregnant Bahamian women are flocking to the US in the third trimester in order for their babies to acquire the citizenship of that country. No matter how you slice it, this is a rejection of The Bahamas by these Bahamian women.

The COI protestors are fully aware of the failed gaming referendum of 2013 and the subsequent legalisation of the sector via the legislative process by the PLP in 2014. One can legitimately assume that, based on what Pinder stated in the past, COI supporters decided to take to Parlia ment Square. They are seeing exactly where this proposed amendment will lead to. Kudos to Bain and COI supporters for being proactive. They should be applauded for utilising a preemptive strategy.

THE good news is that The Bahamas has risen three places (from 58th to 55th in the world) in the United Nations’ first post-pandemic Human Development Index.

This proposed legislation seems to be an attempt to ram Bahamian citizenship down the throats of people who don’t want it. And then there’s the issue of hand ing out citizenship to illegal aliens like candy at Christ mas. This would, in my opinion, incentivise illegal immigration.AnyBahamian who opposes this approach would be labeled xeno phobic. It’s my opinion that this is a smear tactic utilised by Black Lives Matter Marxists in the US towards individuals who have legitimate concerns about the Leftist Woke and social justice movement.

According to Ethio pian tradition, the Ark of the Covenant is preserved in the ancient holy city of Aksum. For centuries, the great relic was report edly kept in the Church of Mary of Zion. It was at this Cathedral that I was bap tised and given the name Fikirte Maryam, meaning “the love of St Mary”. It was in this town that the Italian army removed a large obelisk (a symbol of the right to rule and con nection to the divine). It was sent to Rome to be placed symbolically in front of the building of the Min istry of Colonies created by the Fascist regime. On April 22, 2005, the Aksum obelisk was returned to its rightful home after 68 years in exile. UNESCO handled its reintegration to a World Heritage Site. Aksum is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ethiopia, and Bath is the only city in the United Kingdom to become a des ignated World Heritage Site in its entirety. I arrived in London on a special mission a few days earlier than the course began. I wanted to go to Bath to visit the home of Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen of Ethiopia. They purchased Fairfield House in Bath and lived there in exile from 1935 to 1941. This was during the Fascist invasion of Ethiopia by Mussolini in 1936. The public has been at the centre of the national mourning that has been described as a juxtaposition of splendid pageantry and public homage. It has surely brought out the very best in the Royal Family and the country itself. The lesson already is that there is more that unites than divides the nation. It is being said that what has happened shows that Britain is not the declining power that the liberal elite likes to portray, with agitators and academ ics often running down their own country and decry ing its achievements while claiming Britain has lost its political influence in the world - all of which is mani festly untrue. Moreover, the minority woke activists continue to voice what most people regard as manu factured grievances and anti-British propaganda that only fuels division.
It was heart-warming to watch the King and the new Prince of Wales moving along the lines of people waiting to enter Westminster Hall and greeting and talking to countless numbers of well-wishers. It was nota ble, too, that, during his visits last week to other parts of the United King dom -- Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland -the King was ready to do walkabouts and meet and greet the people who had gathered to see him. He received a warm welcome in each country and there can be no doubt that the UK has been strengthened as a union despite ongoing moves for another ref erendum about Scottish independence.Othermembers of the Royal Family have also been interacting with the public and many people were delighted to see Princes William and Harry meeting large numbers out side Windsor Castle more than a week ago. Some say this is a new approach by the Royal Family in order to connect more closely with the public – and it is clear that the vast majority welcome it.

FINAL FAREWELL TO
CHERISHED MONARCH
Many believe that King Charles III, who has shown calmness and dignity while in distress at losing his mother, possesses the right qualities to be a successful monarch and that he will respect The Queen’s values. But he has always shown that he is his own man as a visionary with certain ideas – for example, about the environment -- that may once have appeared weird and eccentric but which have now become mainstream.Certainly, the new King is a good communicator and has a reputation for being proactive. He has already displayed a new authority as a unifier of the nation – and it is clear that he will respect tradition but embrace progress in a new modern Britain with a promising future.
The Queen’s passing has not just created a sense of profound sorrow but also a feeling of disorientation. For many, she had been part of their lives forever and was a national treas ure. She was a bridgehead between continuity and change while combining tradition and modernity but protecting the timeless values of moderation and tolerance, steadfastness and constancy. She her self, strengthened by her own deep religious faith, always respected other faiths. On the international front, the extent to which The Queen’s passing has created global reaction and interest is remarkable, though not unexpected. The world’s leaders have flocked to London for her funeral. Reportedly, there are 27 other monarchies in the world. But none comes even close to capturing the global interest and respect enjoyed by the British monarchy.Theoverall response to The Queen’s passing speaks volumes for Britain’s stand ing in the world and its soft power -- the reach of its culture, institutions and influence. unique ability during the course of her long reign to bind together what was at times a fractious com munity. As a result, the public’s love of her in return is unsurpassed. Her death has also acted as a force for harmony because, amidst the sorrow over her loss, people are showing their love, respect and admira tion for her and gratitude for her life – and, all the while, they are expressing a feeling of pride in their own country. This has included MPs whose warm tributes to her in Parliament were a poignant display show ing that, in the words of the Labour Party leader, even in politics there is more that brings people together than divides
