T

he New Providence Softball Association will have to wait at least another day before they can decide the men’s pennant winners. After being rained out over the weekend, the league’s biggest match-up for the season finally materialised last night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex as the defending champions Commando Security Truckers took on last year’s runners-up C&S Hitmen for the top spot in the regular season going into the best-of-five playoffs. But after taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the rain came down in the bottom of the sixth as the Hitmen took advantage with a 3-run home run from Martin Burrows Jr to go up 3-2 and leaving two more runners in scoring position on third and second when plate umpire Dereck “Duckie” Christie halted the game. He eventually came back and officially called off the game, awarding the victory to the Hitmen. The Truckers immediately lodged a protest, indicating that if the game is called, they should have been awarded the victory by virtue of leading at the game of the fifth inning when the game was official. League president Henry Dean said the Truckers submitted a “verbal protest” to the officials and it was logged into the scorer’s book. “They now have 48 hours in which they must make their pro-

test official, but we are hoping that they can expedite it so that we can get the playoffs started,” Dean said. “This is not the playoffs where we would have to commission a protest committee that is available to deal with a protest right away before the game is continued. “So because they have lodged the protest, we have to give them the 48 hours in which they make their protest official. Once that is done and we look at the protest, we can get the playoffs started. Hopefully we can get started by Friday or Saturday night.” Both the Truckers and the Hitmen have split their four regular season matches and they were both tied with identical win-loss records of 16-3. The winner of the pennant will occupy the top spot and will take on the fourth place Mighty Mitts, who were 5-14, while the losers will meet the third place BTC Warriors, who

were 9-10. The game started out as a pitcher’s duel between two national team pitchers. Through the first five innings, Thomas Davis was working on a no-hit shut-out with nine strike outs for the Truckers. Alcott Forbes, back in the line-up for the Hitmen, had given up five hits with nine strike outs as well. The difference was the two runs Forbes gave up to the Truckers in the fifth. Ramon Storr led off with a walk and he watched as Lamar Watkins ripped a fly ball to right centre field and only managed to get to third with Watkins having to give up his speed to remain on second. On a ground ball by Marvin Wood, Storr attempted to score and got called out on the tag from Angelo Dillet. But a run-producing single by Garfield Bethel sent Watkins home with the Truckers’ first run. After Bethel stole second, Wood

came home on a wild pitch. The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth when Forbes led off with a walk and stole second for the Hitmen. Dillet also walked and after Forbes reached third on Philip Johnson’s fielder’s choice, Dillet was picked off at second. That brought up Burrows Jr, who drilled a 3-2 pitch in the rain over the centre field fence as the Hitmen celebrated a 3-2 lead after both Forbes and pinch runner Christopher Whymms scored. Michael Ingraham then singled and advanced to third on Rashad Seymour’s double. But the rain came down too heavy for the game to continue. “I’ve been trying to tell the umpire from the time the rain started that we couldn’t continue to play,” said Truckers’ manager Perry Seymour. “Our pitcher wasn’t able to throw strikes before he had to lob the ball. It was just too slippery out there, but the umpires still wanted us to play.” Seymour said it was unfair to his team, who had already taken the lead at the end of the fifth inning and should have been awarded the win. He said they intend to lodge an official protest and will await the final decision by the NPSA. Also waiting are the teams in the ladies’ division. They will have to wait for the outcome as well before their playoffs can get started. Whenever they do, the pennant winning Wildcats (14-5) will battle the fourth place Bommer G Operators (11-9). The second place Lady Truckers (12-7) will take on the third place Lady Stingers (11-8).

3RD CHRIS BROWN BAHAMAS INVITATIONAL CANCELLED By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net WHILE he’s disappointed that the third version of his Chris Brown Bahamas Invitational had to be cancelled, quarter-miler turned promoter Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown said he’s eager to lend his expertise to Grenada as they host their first major international track and field invitational on April 8. Brown, who has had to painfully put his invitational on the back burner again because of the lack of financial support, has been invited by Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell to assist with pulling off their meet in Grenada. Mitchell confirmed that Brown would play a major role in the organisation of the event with the local organising committee. “In other words, we’re looking at not just one type of sport – we’re looking at all forms because it’s about sports tourism,” Mitchell said. “In other words, we see sports tourism as serious economic activity and, of course, the building of the talent of our young people.” It will be the first major international track and field meet at the new stadium, which was opened on January 23. The stadium, which is listed among the IAAF Class One Certified Athletics Facilities, hosted the CARIFTA Games in March. A Local Organising Committee (LOC) has been meeting and planning for the event over the past four months and is already preparing for an official launch. A number of prominent athletes from Jamaica and the United States are being invited to be a part of the one-day affair. Brown, who competed in his fifth consecutive Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August, said he was looking forward to improving on the first two editions of his invitational in 2013 and then again in April after it was cancelled in 2014 and 2015. “It’s very disappointing,” Brown stated. “Being a Bahamian and having a home grown product, something that is for Bahamians and the next generation of athletes, I come to the understanding that with the amount of events on the calendar and this is not a major event, it’s difficult for me to get support and also compete with those mega events. “It has forced me to basically make a decision to

Bahamian players ‘performed extremely well’ for Great Britain By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net TEDDY Sweeting said he literally came to tears when he saw the potential that the Bahamas possesses, watching nine players perform for Great Britain at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier. Sweeting, president of the Bahamas Baseball Federation, along with Patrick Knowles Sr, were invited to Brooklyn, New York where they got to watch seven of the nine players inserted into Great Britain’s line-up in the four-team package in the four-day tournament over the weekend. Great Britain dropped its opener 5-2 to Israel, but bounced back to knock off Brazil 4-3 to advance to the semi-final. In their rematch, Israel routed Great Britain 9-1

and eventually secured the 16th and final berth in the 2017 WBC in Seoul, South Korea in March. As a guest of Great Britain, Sweeting said he was quite impressed with what he saw from the Bahamian players. “They performed extremely well. The level of play from a lot of the young men from rookie ball was outstanding,” he said. “They performed against minor leaguers and former major league players. “If you look at the make up of Team Israel, their pitching staff was comprised of all Triple A pitchers and former Major League pitchers. It showed in their ability to play extremely well, whether the game was a blowout or a close one.” Looking at the quality of players that the Bahamas had on display, Sweeting said he came to

“tears,” knowing that all of the players came up through the federation. “It was just exciting to see them play at that level,” said Sweeting, who either coached or helped to instruct all of the players in their developmental process. “I was very pleased with the way they have improved and went out there and performed.” Even with all of the players they had in their line-up, Sweeting said the announcers kept asking for Lucius Fox, one of the highly recruited players to come out of the Bahamas last year. Fox was unable to join his compatriots as he’s recuperating from an injury. “The Bahamas is becoming well known in respect of the Major League Baseball market,” Sweeting said. “The Bahamas is now in a position to compete on

its own at the international level. “So the game has to stop now. That is going to be my mission until I walk away from the game. We have to make the decision now on what direction they want to go with baseball in this country. But baseball cannot and must not be allowed to function under the two umbrellas. It’s not going to be successful.” Calling out the Bahamas Olympic Committee, Sweeting said a decision should be made on removing the international sanctioning from the Bahamas Baseball Association and placed on the BBF, which is doing all of the work with the growth and development of the sport in the country. “We had nine young men competing on Great Britain’s team, which means that the Bahamas

could have submitted their own national teams, inclusive of pitchers in the minor league system, who have legacy status in the Bahamas, either by grandparents,” he said. “We have a number of players in the minor league system that have that status. A prime example is one of the pitchers in the New York Yankees organisation, who has family affiliation in Spanish Wells.” After the Bahamas was not allowed to field its own team, Sweeting said Antoan Richardson and Albert Cartwright got to compete for Great Britain for the second time. He said Richardson then introduced the BBF to Great Britain and the process began to get the other seven players to join the team.

Big Red Machine whitewash Cougars, 15-0 By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine steamrolled past the Charles W Saunders Cougars to keep their perfect junior boys record intact as the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools’ softball league action continued yesterday. In front of their home crowd, the defending champions Big Red Machine whitewashed the Cougars 15-0 in a three-inning affair to push their front running record to 2-0. The loss dropped the Cougars to 1-1. Kervin Scriven was stingy on the mound, firing a nohitter, striking out five and walking five of the seven batters he put on base. However, SAC’s defence was just as potent behind Scriven, not allowing any Charles W Saunders runner to get past second base. In what started to be a close encounter, the Big Red Machine built on their 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning by plating five more runs in the second and seven in the third for the 15run mercy rule stoppage as they worked through three pitchers from Charles W

SAC JUNIOR BOYS GET HOME VICTORY OVER CW SAUNDERS Saunders. “We came out and we did what we were expected to do,” said SAC’s coach Je’Vaughn Saunders. “We executed what we did in practice and the outcome was what we anticipated.” Cougars’ starting pitcher Alvano Curry gave up just one hit - a single to Deshaughn Forbes with one-out. But the ball was misplayed by left fielder Larenz Moxey and Forbes scampered home behind lead off batter second baseman Pheron Charlton and shortstop Tyler Munroe to account for the Big Red Machine’s first three runs. With two out to start the second inning, catcher Tyler Wallace ripped a shot to left field and was originally credited with an in-the-park home run. But it was overruled and he had to go back to third base with a triple. He then caught a ride home as Munroe followed with a RBI single. With the bases eventually loaded, third baseman Aaron Knowles got on with a RBI walk and

left fielder Donovan Butler had a two-run double as he greeted Cougars’ second pitcher Breyis Dean, who started in centre field. Up 8-0 going into the third inning, SAC struck again with lead off walks from Charlton and Wallace. Munroe and Forbes had back-to-back run-produc-

ing singles and first baseman Andre Arthur raced around the bases on a tworun triple. They tacked on two more unearned runs from Knowles and Butler, the last coming on right fielder James Francis’ RBI single. Jeter Miller came in to pitch to Butler, but the damage was already done. “We just have to be a little more consistent with our swings and knowing what to do in certain situations, but we look pretty sharp early in the season,” coach Saun-

ders said. “There’s always room for improvement, but I’m not concerned. We can always improve.” It wasn’t what the coaches expected, but Brad Wood Jr said there’s a typical mental block that their Cougars players have to deal with whenever they play at St Augustine’s College. “The guys came out a little flat and made a few errors,” he said. “But like any other time when we come down in the back here, you’re not only play-

ing against the children, but against the coaches and mainly the umpires. I don’t think the calls were going both ways the same way. But our boys could have done better. They could have adjusted and made some better plays. They didn’t make those plays.” If they can get their mental aspect of the game together whenever they play SAC, Wood Jr said they will be able to play just as they do when they face their other counterparts.

3RD CHRIS BROWN BAHAMAS INVITATIONAL CANCELLED FROM PAGE 1 call it what it is and pull the plug on the event. It’s disappointing because this is something that I have been praying to God for it to be a mega event on the IAAF calendar and it got there. Unfortunately this has happened.” While one door got shut, Brown said another one opened and he’s looking forward to teaming up with the LOC in Grenada to make their event a household one on the international calendar. “It’s prefect timing. The timing couldn’t have come at a bet-

ter time,” Brown said. “For me to showcase a major event and to help boost Grenada in a powerhouse in the region is a blessing.” Brown, who turns 38 on October 15, said he intends to make the trek to Grenada to do a site inspection and also sit down with the LOC and put the final pieces of the puzzle together in their bid to make the event a success on April 8. As for his CBBI, Brown said it’s a little too early to say if the event will be back in the Bahamas. He noted that it would all hinge on whether or not he can get the fi-

nancial support to make it happen. “I’m very appreciative of the help that the Bahamas Government has given to me over the last two editions of the Invitational and all of the persons who played a very important role in it,” he stated. “But I just can’t stress myself out anymore. I have to make a decision for my family. So in 2017, I can’t go forward with it. I will just go to Grenada and assist them in making their event a success.” Although he has indicated that he is done running at the Olym-

pics after anchoring the Bahamas to a bronze medal in the men’s 4 x 400m relay in Rio, Brown said he intends to be in action next year with his focus primarily on helping to keep the Bahamas a vibrant force in the relay. “Each race I’m going to take it step by step, but I’m going to be doing more relays rather than individual events,” he pointed out. “I’m going to do my role to ensure that the team gets to the World Championships and in the finals and being a contender for a medal.” The former Bahamian national

record holder is the most decorated male athlete, having won individual medals in the 400m from the Carifta Games to the World Indoor Championships. The only three meets that he has not medalled at are the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympics. But in a span of three decades, the Wemyss Bight, Eleuthera native, now living in Atlanta, Georgia with his wife and children, has either anchored or started on just about every relay team that has medalled at every major international competition.

Training camp: New look Miami Heat on Bahamas ‘business trip’ By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net FOLLOWING a festive Bahamian welcome, the rebuilding Miami Heat went to work almost immediately in what head coach Erik Spoelstra called a “business trip.” The Heat opened their 2016 training camp in the Bahamas yesterday in the Grand Ballroom of the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. Spoelstra and other Heat personnel raved about the welcome and the overall experience of being in the Bahamas, but insisted that training camp would be reverted to a sense of basketball normalcy once the first practice began. “It’s a business trip but it’s fun being here in the Bahamas. We had a great reception, put us in a good mood for our team meeting and guys were ready to get to work as everyone around the league is on that first day. “Guys were ready to embrace a lot of the things they knew they would embrace in this first practice,” he said. “Guys came in extremely conditioned well and really ready to get into full contact this first practice. We didn’t mess around or wait, we got right to it. We were getting right to work and we need a lot of it. We have some new faces,

guys have different roles and I commend them for spending the last 7-8 weeks putting in that time to get their bodies right.” Despite the backdrop of the Bahamas’ seascape for the next few days, Spoelstra insisted the focus would be on the court and getting a first look at his team as they prepare for the upcoming season. “They knew what to expect and if for whatever reason that escaped them, not knowing what a Miami Heat training camp would be like, then I think after the night session they’ll realise that and they probably won’t have a lot of excess energy to do other things,” he said. “But being here, it’s great. It’s a great environment to get to work in. The views are fantastic, even out of our meeting rooms, coming out of our meals, it’s a nice environment and it’s nice to give these guys that kind of environment while getting something done.” This year’s camp was the second time the organisation hosted training camp in the Bahamas after the 2013 event when they were led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. “We love it here,” Spoelstra said. “Our last experience here was terrific. We love how private it was. It’s a perfect setting for our guys in between the practices just to have a very

serene atmosphere but also incredible hospitality. The guys really enjoy it. There are great people here. We always see smiles everywhere you go. It makes the work that much easier.” Team captain and Miami native, Udonis Haslem, is the only member of the Heat’s roster to participate in both Bahamas training camps. The veteran forward said he considers himself an “honourary Bahamian.” “I feel good,” he said. “I enjoy it here. I enjoy the people. I enjoy the culture, the food. Everybody’s nice, the weather is great. There are a lot of Miami Heat fans here. It’s just like being home. I was here this summer. I vacation here all the time. I’m like an honourary Bahamian.” Haslem said bonding over the course of the trip will be an important factor for the new look Heat. “I’m looking forward to maybe planning a little team get together possibly if it works with the schedule for practice,” he said. “I’ll try to get the guys together maybe hang out by the pool, just do some team bonding to get to learn more about each other.” Haslem will be a leader on the team alongside Hassan Whiteside and Goran Dragic - the team’s point guard and focal point of what is expected to be a more uptempo offence. “[This camp] is differ-

hamas with the beaches and the nice weather and we’re practicing inside. But that’s what we came to do, to practice and it was tough, the first day is always tough, you need to break that ice and it feels much better after first practice,” Dragic said. “I’m one of the guys who’s a veteran on this team and of course we need to be examples for those young guys who are brand new on this team or just a few years in the league. Our culture is everyone supporting each other like family and when the tough times come, and for sure they will, we need to be together supporting each other.” Second year guard Josh Richardson, recovering from a partially torn MCL, is expected to be an important member of an emerging group in a very young supporting cast. As a rookie, Richardson averaged 6.6 points on 45.2 per cent shooting primarily in a bench role last season. “I was always a guy that led by example but I have to be more vocal this year and I’m excited about it. I know it’s going to be a group effort trying to refill our wing

spots and keep going in an upward direction,” he said. “It’s great to be in the Bahamas and shut yourself out of what we’re used to everyday. We’re not as engaged with social media because we don’t get great service on our phones here, but just to be away from the hustle and bustle of Miami helps. So it’s cool to be able to come to a place as nice as the Bahamas.” One of those new additions, Dion Waiters, expected to compete with Richardson for the starting shooting guard spot, said he hopes to be able to enjoy some time off the court in his first visit to the Bahamas, including Atlantis’ Leap of Faith Water Slide. “Hopefully we get a day off soon. I’ve never been to the Bahamas but for right now it’s a business trip for me. I’m just trying to get settled, learn the defence and things like that,” he said, “Hopefully if I get a day off I’ll go.” The Heat will host camp at the Atlantis Grand Ballroom for the remainder of the week, highlighted by Thursday’s Alonzo Mourning Youth Camp.

For Heat, the names are different, but approach is the same By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Udonis Haslem took a look around the first Miami Heat team meeting of the season after their arrival in the Bahamas and was struck by a sobering realisation. He’s the last one left. When the Heat first came to these islands for training camp three years ago, they had a roster filled with All-Stars and future Hall of Famers. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were the best trio in the league. The Heat were the two-time defending NBA champions and in the midst of a run where they would reach The Finals in four consecutive seasons. They brought 20 players to that Bahamas camp in 2013. Now back for a second time, everyone but Haslem is gone. “When I’m not on the court, it crosses my mind,” Haslem said. “Plane rides, in the hotel room, places like that, it hits you. But when I’m on the court, it has to be business as usual.” Such is the approach for the Heat right now: Business as usual, even amid massive change. It’s Miami’s first camp since 2002 without Wade, who’s now with the Chicago Bulls. And the workout came a day after the Heat announced that Bosh — who has battled blood-clot problems — is not in their plans going forward.

Bosh remains on the roster and will likely stay there until at least February, but the Heat do not expect him to play for them again. There were eight players who started more than 10 games for Miami last season, and only two are left for this training camp. “It is strange,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “But once you got on the wood and started working with this group, they got the attention that they deserve from the coaching staff. It’s about these 19 guys right now, investing in all of them and preparing for 29 days from now.” Day 1 of camp yesterday was just like Day 1 in 2013, with two courts set up in what usually are ballrooms at the resort the Heat will call home this week. The overwhelming majority of the first session was devoted to defence and with most of the team leaving with large icepacks strapped to various parts of their bodies. “I kind of figured,” said new Heat guard Dion Waiters, who shed 12 pounds to get down to 222 in just a couple weeks to get ready for training camp — after getting an edict from Spoelstra to get into better shape. “It is what it is. We’re only here to get better.” Waiters hadn’t been to the Bahamas before, but said he didn’t expect to have time to enjoy the sun and sand even in a place called Paradise Island. The climate isn’t significantly different from Miami; the Bahamas is about 185 miles southeast of South Florida,

Allardyce loses job as England manager after newspaper sting By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Sam Allardyce lost his job as England manager yesterday after one match and just 67 days in charge, paying the price for damaging comments to undercover reporters that were deemed “inappropriate” by the English Football Association. British newspaper The Daily Telegraph published video of Allardyce appearing to offer advice on how to sidestep an outlawed player transfer practice and also to negotiate a 400,000-pound ($519,000) public-speaking contract while talking to reporters posing as businessmen. The FA acted swiftly, holding emergency talks with Allardyce in London

before announcing the end of his short-lived tenure by mutual consent. “In light of the media allegations that we’ve seen,” FA chief executive Martin Glenn said, “we’ve concluded — and Sam’s agreed — that his behaviour has been inappropriate and frankly not what is expected of an England manager.” Asked about how Allardyce had reacted, Glenn added: “I know personally that he is deeply, deeply upset and deeply regrets the error of judgement, but I also think that he understands why The FA has had to take this tough decision.” The 61-year-old Allardyce was hired to his dream job on July 22 and had a contract through 2018. He is the shortestserving England manager. “He accepts he made a

significant error of judgment and has apologised,” the FA said in a statement. “However, due to the serious nature of his actions, the FA and Allardyce have mutually agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. “This is not a decision that was taken lightly but the FA’s priority is to protect the wider interests of the game and maintain the highest standards of conduct in football,” the statement continued. “The manager of the England men’s senior team is a position which must demonstrate strong leadership and show respect for the integrity of the game at all times.” Allardyce said he was “deeply disappointed” with the FA’s decision. “Although it was made clear during the recorded

conversations that any proposed arrangements would need the FA’s full approval,” Allardyce said, “I recognise I made some comments which have caused embarrassment.” Gareth Southgate, the manager of England’s under-21 side, will take charge of the senior team’s next four matches — against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and Spain — while the FA searches for a new coach. After opening World Cup qualifying with a victory in Slovakia, England plays Malta on October 8 and Slovenia on October 11. The Telegraph published its undercover investigation in its Tuesday edition, under the front-page headline: “England manager for sale.” Allardyce met people he reportedly thought were

representatives of an Asian firm. In a grainy, edited video, he is recorded as saying it was “not a problem” to circumvent FA rules that stop third parties from owning the economic rights of players. FIFA has banned third-party ownership as a threat to the game’s integrity because investors force transfers to make a profit. “You can still get around it,” the former Sunderland and West Ham manager said in the recording. “I mean obviously the big money’s here.” Allardyce told the undercover reporters that his predecessor Roy Hodgson sent players “all to sleep.” Allardyce also mimicked Hodgson’s speech impediment. He also questioned why Prince William, who is president of the FA, did

SAM ALLARDYCE (AP) not appear at last week’s London launch of the 2020 European Championship. Wembley Stadium will host the semi-finals and final of the tournament. “It would have been nice if he’d have turned up but he obviously had more, much busier things on,” Allardyce said in the recording. FA chairman Greg Clarke, who held talks with Allardyce alongside Glenn, said the manager’s comments left his position “untenable.”

LEICESTER WINS, MADRID HELD BY DORTMUND IN THE CHAMPS LEAGUE By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer LEICESTER’S players upturned the established order in England last season. Now, they’re doing the same in Europe. The fairy tale goes on for the once-unheralded central English club after beating double European champion Porto 1-0 yesterday for a second straight win in its first-ever Champions League campaign. No other team has six points at this stage in the Champions League — not even defending champion Real Madrid, which scored early through Cristiano Ronaldo before conceding late to draw 2-2 at Borussia Dortmund. Leicester was bottom of the Premier League this time two years ago, so not even its most ardent fan could have predicted this rise. No wonder the King Power stadium was rocking when Islam Slimani headed home from close range in the 25th minute for what proved to be the winning goal. It came as no surprise that Slimani was Porto’s tormentor. The Algeria striker had scored five goals in three games for former side

Sporting against Porto already in 2016, earning him a nickname of the “Dragon Slayer” in reference to Porto’s moniker — the Dragons. Leicester used the same tactics against Porto as it did in the team’s improbable charge to the Premier League title: Defend stoutly and in numbers, and hit opponents on the counterattack. The approach worked perfectly, although Porto almost snatched an equaliser when Jesus Corona struck a volley against the post late on. In the other match in Group G, FC Copenhagen beat Club Brugge 4-0 at home to follow up its opening-round draw against Porto. • Here’s a look at what else happened when the Champions League resumed yesterday: GROUP E It was a good night all round for English clubs, with Tottenham getting off the mark in its first Champions League campaign in six years by winning 1-0 at CSKA Moscow. It was the first visit by an English club to Russia since violent clashes between fans from the two countries at the European Championship in June. The game appeared to pass off with no sign of disorder in or around the stadium. Monaco stayed unbeaten after Kamil Glik scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen, which went ahead through Javier Hernandez. Monaco leads on four

points, one above Tottenham and two above Leverkusen. GROUP F Ronaldo sulked on Saturday after being substituted by coach Zinedine Zidane during a Spanish league match. The sulk briefly turned into a smile three days later as the Portugal star finished off a flowing team move to put Real ahead against Dortmund. It was his 98th goal in UEFA competition, and 95th in the Champions League. After Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s equal-

iser, Ronaldo sent in the free kick that was eventually turned into the net by Raphael Varane, putting Real in sight of a first win in six matches at Dortmund. But Andre Schuerrle struck in the 87th minute to earn Dortmund a point and leave both teams on four points. With Real having drawn its last two games in La Liga, the team is on its longest winless streak under Zidane. Sporting Lisbon rebounded from conceding two late goals to lose to Real on Matchday 1 by

beating Legia Warsaw 2-0, with Bryan Ruiz and Bas Dost scoring the goals. GROUP H Juventus’ big summer signings proved their worth as Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain scored in a 4-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb. Paulo Dybala and Dani Alves, another offseason recruit, also scored as the Italian champions built on an opening-round 0-0 draw against Sevilla. Sevilla joined Juve on four points by beating Lyon 1-0 thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder’s 53rd-minute goal.

Tim Tebow sharp in last tuneup before instructional league debut By BILL WHITEHEAD Associated Press PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Tim Tebow may have had his best day as a New York Mets prospect. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback had two hits, scored a run and ended a three-inning game with a sliding grab yesterday in his final tuneup before his instructional league debut. He is to play today against the St Louis Cardinals’ instructional club. “I feel like every day I’m getting a little more comfortable,” said Tebow, who singled in his last two at-bats of the simulated game. “It’s great just to see live pitching and get live at-bats. I’m just getting a little bit better every day. That’s the goal.” The first week of camp had more the feel of a circus. Tebow, the first sophomore to win the Heisman, was on display with new teammates, new surroundings and playing a sport he had not competed in since high school. His work last week with the instructional staff paid

Facing highly regarded Mets prospect Marcos Molina, Tebow struck out swinging on four pitches in the first inning. In the second, he looped a single to shallow centre, the ball barely eluding diving shortstop Hansel Moreno, delighting the couple of hundred fans on hand. While attempting to steal, Tebow scored when the ball was batted into play and Moreno committed a throwing error on a force play at second.

Tebow followed in the third inning with a sharp single through the left side on a 93 mph fastball from Cameron Planck. “I just tried to take it where it was pitched,” he said. Tebow played left field, and in the second inning charged hard on Moreno’s fly but failed to get close enough as the ball landed foul. “I honestly try to (go after) everything pretty hard

and try to stay intense. Hopefully, that’s something I can bring to this game and these young kids,” he said. “Everything you do, just do it with an intense amount of focus and effort.” On the game’s final out, a drive in the gap, he backhanded the ball for his second putout of the day. “You try to get on your horse and go run it down and do what you can do to make the catch,” he said. As for his professional debut, Tebow wants to keep things simple. “You prepare for it the same way you prepared for today,” he said. “You don’t want to change anything. You don’t want a game day to be any bigger than any other day. Consistency is the key. Just make the next day a little bit better.” Today will be different — a full game against pitchers he hasn’t seen. “It will be fun to suit and get to play a different team and compete,” Tebow said. “But I think we’ve been competing every day. It’s one more day and one more opportunity.”

Bengals think they’re better with volatile Burfict back By JOE KAY AP Sports Writer CINCINNATI (AP) — The Bengals aren’t sure how many plays they’ll get out of linebacker Vontaze Burfict in his first game back from a league suspension. They know that no matter what the number, it’ll likely make a difference. Burfict sat out the first three games for his repeated illegal hits, including one during the Bengals’ latest first-round playoff loss. His hit to receiver Antonio Brown’s head drew a penalty that set up Pittsburgh’s last-minute field goal for an 18-16 win at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals (1-2) had their defence shredded during a 29-17 loss to Denver on Sunday, with Trevor Siemian throwing a careerhigh four touchdown passes. Cincinnati hosts the Dolphins (1-2) on Thursday night needing something — or somebody — to get the defence turned around. Coach Marvin Lewis said the defence felt different when Burfict went onto the field for a light practice yesterday. “You feel it as soon as he walks on the field,” Lewis said. “His command of things is excellent.” Burfict is known for his grasp of the defence and his innate ability to read plays and get to the ball. The question is whether he can

The linebacker has been repeatedly penalised and fined during his career. The NFL’s three-game suspension gave notice that his behaviour won’t be tolerated. Although Burfict insists that he won’t change his style of play, the coaching staff has talked to him about his decisions on the

field. They’ve prepared him for opponents trying to goad him. Burfict also has had concussions because of his head-first style of play, something else that the coaches have tried to change. “He knows,” defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said. “We’ve talked at length about all that

stuff. I’m sure he’s aware of what’s at stake. “I still want him to be an aggressive player. I don’t want any linebackers being passive. But again, at the same time, people are going to be looking for him, so he’s got to understand that and do it the right way. Hopefully he learned his lesson off what happened.” Burfict could get a signifi-

Garoppolo, Brissett on field as Patriots return to practice By KYLE HIGHTOWER AP Sports Writer FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett were both in uniform as the Patriots went back to the practice field yesterday. Which one of them will be at quarterback when New England hosts Buffalo on Sunday remains a mystery at this point. Garoppolo missed last week’s game against Houston with a throwing shoulder injury that occurred during the second quarter of the New England’s win over the Miami Dolphins on September 18. In his absence last week, Brissett, a third-round pick in this year’s draft, successfully led New England (3-0) past the Houston Texans in his first career start, but sustained an apparent right thumb injury sometime during the second half. It’s all added more intrigue as the Patriots prepare for their final game before the return of Tom Brady from his four-game “Deflategate” suspension. Neither Garoppolo nor Brissett were available for interviews yesterday, but Brissett did briefly acknowledge the high in-

terest surrounding his health as reporters gazed at him while he walked through the locker room prior to practice. “I’ve never seen so many people looking at my hand,” Brissett said with a chuckle on his way to his locker. Brissett didn’t have any coverings on his thumb at the time, and could be seen both texting with the thumb and using it to lace up his cleats. But later at practice he did have tape on his thumb and wrist as he stretched. Garoppolo didn’t have any visible braces or bandages on his shoulder in the locker room or once he was on the field. Coach Bill Belichick deflected questions on the status of his quarterbacks earlier this week, deferring to the NFL-mandated injury report which will be available for the first time this week today. Receiver Danny Amendola, who had the first two-touchdown game of his career against the Dolphins courtesy of throws from Garoppolo, said he was just as clueless about the plan at quarterback as everyone else. “I don’t know — ask coach,” Amendola said. “That will be up to him.”

AP POWER RANKINGS: THIS TIME IT’S PATRIOTS AND BRONCOS TIED AT NO.1 By SIMMI BUTTAR AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) — The Denver Broncos are off to a perfect start under quarterback Trevor Siemian. The New England Patriots also are 3-0 despite playing without superstar Tom Brady. The past two Super Bowl winners also share the top spot in the latest AP Pro32 poll released yesterday. The Patriots received six first-place votes and the Broncos earned five and both have 377 points from balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL. It’s the second consecutive week for a tie at the top spot in the poll. Last week the Patriots and Steelers were tied at No. 1. The Patriots will play their last game without the suspended Brady when they host the Bills on Sunday. “The genius of Bill Belichick has the Patriots in early control of the AFC East. As per usual,” Newsday’s Bob Glauber said. “One more week to go before Tom Brady returns, presumably picks up

where he left off and keeps the Jets, Bills and Dolphins spinning their wheels in hopeless pursuit of the perennial AFC East champs and Super Bowl contenders.” The defending champion Broncos will try to stay unbeaten when they head to Tampa Bay. The Vikings, who are 3-0 despite injuries to Teddy Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson, received the other firstplace vote and are No. 3 in the poll. “Getting off to a 3-0 start despite losing their franchise QB, once-in-ageneration RB and starting LT in the span of a few weeks is Patriots-esque,” said Jenny Vrentas of The Monday Morning Quarterback. “Credit to head coach Mike Zimmer.” The Eagles, led by rookie quarterback Carson Wentz, are also 3-0 and in first place in the NFC East. Philly jumped 11 spots to No. 4 in the poll after routing the Steelers 34-3 on Sunday. “More popular than Philly cheesesteaks, rookie QB Carson Wentz has already won over a demanding fan base,” said Ira Kaufman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Packers jumped four spots to round out the top five. Seattle also made a big leap, moving six spots to No. 6. AFC North rivals Baltimore and Pittsburgh are tied for No. 7. The Chiefs are No. 9 after forcing eight turnovers in a rout of the Jets. “What a performance by the Chiefs defense, which is still missing Justin Houston but has the league’s next great young cornerback, Marcus Peters,” Vrentas said. And the Panthers, despite being 1-2 on the season, round out the top 10. “Cam Newton is getting pummeled in the early going, as the Panthers continue the trend of Super Bowl losers who struggle the year after,” Glauber said. “Eight sacks, three interceptions and a sore ankle for Newton in a lopsided home loss to the resurgent Vikings.” After consecutive losses in prime time, the Bears replaced the Browns at the bottom of the poll at No. 32. “After three demoralizing weeks, Soldier Field is an afterthought compared to Wrigley Field,” Kaufman said.

cant number of plays. Last season, he missed the first six games while recovering from offseason knee surgery. He returned for a 16-10 win at Pittsburgh, had solo tackles on each of the first two plays, and was on the field for nearly half of the defensive plays. Burfict said he’s in better physical condition this time

because he’s not returning from an injury. He worked out on his own during the suspension. “This is totally different,” Burfict said. “I was coming off an injury last time. I’ve had more time to condition and work out. I feel I can play a full game, but it’s up to them. They said if I look tired, they’re going to pull me out.”

Barcelona tries to keep winning form without Messi By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer

• Here’s a look at today’s matches in the Champions League:

MADRID (AP) — Neymar and Luis Suarez will lead the attack again when Barcelona visits Borussia Moenchengladbach in its first Champions League game since losing Lionel Messi to an injury. The two forwards led Barcelona to a 5-0 win at Sporting Gijon in the Spanish league on Saturday, when Messi was already sidelined because of a groin ailment, and today they will try to help the Catalan club end Moenchengladbach’s 11-game winning streak at home in all competitions. Neymar has scored four goals in the last four matches, while Suarez has eight goals in his nine games this season. Barcelona has won only once in its last six matches against Bundesliga teams in Germany. One day before the match, Moenchengladbach coach Andre Schubert had his contract extended until 2019. Another German club with an important match against Spanish opposition is Bayern Munich, which plays at Atletico Madrid in a rematch of last season’s semifinals.

GROUP A Three months after playing against each other at the European Championship, the Xhaka brothers meet again. Granit Xhaka should line up for Arsenal against his older brother Taulant, a defender for Swiss team Basel. At Euro 2016, Granit played for Switzerland while Taulant featured for Albania after switching his international allegiance in 2013. Both teams started with 1-1 draws, although Arsenal got the result at Paris Saint-Germain in possibly the English team’s toughest match in the group. Basel, which beat Chelsea and drew at both Manchester United and Liverpool in the past five seasons in European competition, is leading the Swiss league by 13 points thanks to its 100 per cent domestic record. PSG, still without injured winger Hatem Ben Arfa, is away to Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad. GROUP B Napoli was the only group winner in the opening round and has

a chance to solidify its lead when it hosts Benfica. The Italian side will be relying on 22-year-old Poland forward Arkadiusz Milik, who has filled in admirably after Gonzalo Higuain’s Italian-record transfer to Juventus for 90 million euros ($99 million). He scored both goals in the comeback win at Dynamo Kiev and added two more two-goal matches in Serie A. In Napoli’s previous Champions League appearance in 2013-14, the club won all three of its home matches against Borussia Dortmund, Marseille and Arsenal, yet still failed to advance despite collecting 12 points — more than any other side that has missed the qualification cut. Benfica, which conceded a late equaliser to Besiktas at home in its opener, is likely to remain without forward Jonas because of an injury. Dynamo Kiev will try to rebound at Besiktas.

and spent my entire career there apart from the last two years. Borussia is my first love and that will always be the case.” Ter Stegen made 108 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia from 2011-14. Celtic lost 7-0 to Ter Stegen’s Barcelona in the opener, and things don’t get much easier for the Scottish champions. Next up for Celtic is Manchester City, which is on a 10-match winning run under new coach Pep Guardiola. One of its best performances so far was a 4-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach. City will be without one of its leading players, Kevin De Bruyne, because of a hamstring injury. GROUP D Bayern’s last three trips to Spain all ended in defeats and elimination in the semi-finals of the Champions League. It happened against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, its opponent again today. Captain Philipp Lahm downplayed any talk of revenge for the match at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. “We can’t make up for the loss last season,” he said. “Our job is to get points and then we could

But we know what to expect and it won’t be easy.” Bayern and Atletico won their opening matches and will be fighting for first place in the group. Bayern has won all eight matches under Carlo Ancelotti, the best start for a new Bayern coach. Ancelotti was in charge of Real Madrid when it beat Atletico in the 2014 final. Atletico will be without midfielder Augusto Fernandez, who tore a right knee ligament in the Spanish league on Sunday. Rostov hosts PSV Eindhoven in Russia in the other group match.

ASPIRING PLAYERS BEING SCOUTED FOR THE FLAG FOOTBALL YOUTH LEAGUE THE Bahamas Flag Football League continues to scout players for its upcoming Youth League. Sessions are conducted 2-4pm every Saturday at the Winton Rugby Centre. The league is designated to be a co-ed league for boys and girls aged six to 17 years with a registration fee of $35. Jayson Clarke, president of the BFFL, said the league sought to capitalise on the popularity of the adult leagues throughout the country and offer new opportunities to aspiring players. “I think the biggest factor in getting the youth league up and running was the fact that we saw the potential opportunities for the young kids. While the adult league is going on there are scores of young kids playing at the field and then when we look at it, those

opportunities for those kids who have the knowledge of football, it allows them to be better positioned for scholarships, education and possibly a professional career. Looking at those things and using football as a tool to help them develop those skills and develop the discipline that comes with learning a sport we saw the need to capitalise on this opportunity,” he said. “The potential for a youth league is always great because parents are always looking to get their kids involved in something. I do see this league taking off very quickly, even though we will try to manage its growth. Of course volunteers will always be a challenge but we do see a similar potential at the youth level and hope to see a similar success as we have had at the adult level.”
