TWO BAHAMIAN GOSPEL ARTISTS WIN BIG AT PRAYZE FACTOR AWARDS IN ATLANTA
By CARA HUNT cbrennen@ tribunemedia.net Tribune Features Writer
It was indeed a time of praise for Landlord and Big Bruh as the two gospel artists recently each won a Prayze Factor Award in Atlanta, Georgia.
Clifford Riley, who uses the stage name Big Bruh, was awarded the Vanessa Clark Trailblazer Award.
It is named after Bahamian gospel artist Vanessa Clark who passed away earlier this year following a long illness.
The award is given to gospel artists who are blazing a trail in the gospel music industry internationally, despite extenuating circumstances.
Big Bruh took to social media to express his gratitude and excitement for the honour.
“All praise to the Most Highest for His favour towards me. And big shoutout to Orlando Miller, aka Landlord, for his continual support of me; and the Prayze Factor Awards for hosting such an awesome event for an indie artist and others in the gospel music industry,” he said.
“To my two beautiful daughters, A’sia and Amiah Riley, thank you for being my source other than the Most Highest for the
encouragement to keep on pushing. To Vanessa Clarke’s family, may her soul rest in peace and the legacy of her works continue to be a source of strength for others to follow.”
Orlando Miller, better known as Landlord, won the International TV Host of the Year Award.
“I felt really, really good; coming from humble beginnings to just being there in Atlanta in a category with so many TV hosts and CEOs. To be considered is a great opportunity and also winning is a great opportunity,” he told Tribune Religion.
“We are doing the same things, but all of us have the most respect for each other in all that we do. And so even though many of them did not win that category, they still appreciate what I bring to the table and I appreciate to the table.”
Another award for a Bahamian artist was posthumously given to the family of the late Trinity Rolle from Grand Bahama.
Founded and produced by Apostle Dr Teresa Jordan, who is affectionately known as ‘Pastor T’, the Prayze Factor Awards present a platform specifically and strategically formatted to bring maximum exposure to the inspired artists movement.
The Prayze Factor Awards are designed to expose
faith-based arts on a national/ international level with major market radio, television and industry exposure.
Those nominated should be artists who are seriously looking to gain more exposure, increase their fanbase and make their music/ministry more relevant in the gospel and inspirational industry.
This is a fan-driven platform, so artists will be required to engage their fans in voting, commenting and promoting their ministries.
While this is a friendly awards competition, organisers said it is important that artists utilise the platform to draw those that are unaware of their ministry to the table where they can not only experience the ministry but experience the realness of Christ.
There are three rounds during each period of the Prayze Factor promotions. Each round is designed to accomplish the aforementioned goals for the artists. Nominees will be afforded several opportunities for promotions of their ministries, opportunities to engage their fans and opportunities to show their nation’s strengths.
To maximise the full potential of this platform, artists must be in the frame of mind that God deserves their very best every step of the way and without excuse, the organisers said.

The Ebenezer Union Baptist church family in Farmer's Hill, Exuma, along with its pastor, Rev Stephen Smith, hosted members from the Ministry of Tourism in honour of a special Tourism Day service.
Under the theme, "Tourism and Green Investments”, the service was attended by Charity Armbrister-McKenzie, Tourism Director of Cultural and Authentic Events in Exuma.
“She said that her team thought it fitting to pause for time of thanksgiving because God has been so good. She thanked Pastor Smith for a warm welcome,” said Vanessa C Smith, Ebenezer public relations representative
At the service, Ms Armbrister noted that as part of the body of Christ, Ebenezer plays an integral role in the community of Exuma.
Ms Armbrister further stated that tourism is the country's largest industry and serves as the chief pillar of the economy, generating some 60 percent of the nation's employment. It has also made
the Bahamas into a first-class destination.
“Visitors love our beaches, our culture and of course our people. Over seven million people visited the Bahamas last year and we are well on track to achieving eight million. In 2022, Exuma welcomed 8,458 visitors, representing an over 30 percent increase for the last five years,” said Ms Armbrister. Additionally in attendance were Tourism coordinator Tamika Rolle, officer Lashanna Rolle, senior executive Michelle McKenzie, administrative assistance Shazarah Bootle, senior executives Arielle McKenzie and Yamali Harris-Rolle, as well as Island Administrator Earl Campbell.
The team visited the L N Coakley and George Town Primary Schools to make tangible presentations. They also participated in a live talk show on 98.3 The Blaze FM during the week.
Rev Smith and the Ebenezer family provided locally made treats including coconut cakes, coconut tarts, cornbread and fruit cocktails to the Tourism team, freshly made by Stacey's Sweet Tooth and Wildred and Melda Ferguson of Fergie's Kitchen.

This Christian text you’ve never heard of, ‘The Shepherd of Hermas’, barely mentions Jesus − but it was a favourite of early Christians far and wide
By CHANCE BONAR Tufts University
(THE
CONVERSA-
TION) People usually think about the Bible as a book with a fixed number of texts within its pages: 24 books in the Jewish version of the Bible; 66 for Protestants; 73 for Catholics; 81 if you’re Ethiopian Orthodox.
Writings that didn’t make it into the Bible, on the other hand, are often called “apocrypha,” a Greek term that refers to hidden or secret things. There are hundreds of apocryphal Jewish and Christian texts that, for one reason or another, were not included in different versions of the Bible. Some simply fell out of use. Some caused theological headaches for later Jews or Christians, and some were rejected because of their author –for supposedly not having really been written by an apostle, for instance. (When used with a capital “A,” Apocrypha refers to a handful of books included in the Catholic and Orthodox versions of the Old Testament, but not most Protestant ones.)
Just because a text was deemed apocryphal, however, does not mean that it was unpopular or lacked influence. Many texts that are treated as unimportant or unbiblical today were considered central at one time. As a scholar of early Christianity, some of my research centers on what was once an extremely well-read text, but one that most people today have never heard of: The Shepherd of Hermas.
Enslaved to God
The Shepherd of Hermas was written sometime between 70–140 CE and takes place on the road between Rome and Naples. Hermas, who is presented as the text’s author and narrator, has various encounters with two divine figures called the Church and the Shepherd, who give him commandments and visions that he is instructed to share with other believers.
The Shepherd is a sizable text – 114 chapters long – and substantial portions describe a vision of a tower under construction. The tower represents the church itself, in the sense of all Jesus’ followers, built out of stones that represent different types of believers. Some fit right in, others must be reshaped or recolored, and some are rejected altogether. For example, stones representing rich people or businessmen are urged to repent, while hospitable people are portrayed as properly shaped.
Other parts of the text are focused on how believers should manage their emotions, how to act ethically in the world and how to obey God’s will.
The Shepherd urges selfcontrol and fear of God, trying to instill obedience and avoid allowing emotions like fear or doubt to overcome believers.
My own research on the Shepherd focuses on how the text depicts believers as enslaved to God, as is true of some other early Christian literature as well. The writer imagines that God’s holy spirit is able to enter loyal believers’ bodies and possess them, urging them to do what God wills.
Notably, figures like Jesus and the apostles are virtually absent from the Shepherd. Instead, readers find a story about an otherwise unknown enslaved man named Hermas experiencing visions and talking with divine beings in the Italian countryside. Hermas is portrayed as a believer who doubts his own ability to accomplish what these two divine figures, the Church and Shepherd, expect of him, lamenting throughout how difficult it is to follow God’s commandments.
‘Useful for the soul’
Given that the Shepherd is a long, rambling
as far west as Ireland and as far east as China.
The Shepherd is even included in what scholars consider one of the oldest and most complete Bibles in the world. Canonical Christian Bibles today end with Revelation, a dramatic book of apocalyptic visions. The Codex Sinaiticus, however, a fourth- or fifth-century manuscript now held at the British Library, ends with the Shepherd. The text’s inclusion in such an expensive, deluxe codex highlights how important the text was to many Christians, even as the contents of the New Testament were being solidified.
Many significant Christian writers from the fourth and fifth centuries comment on how the Shepherd is important instruction for new Christians, regardless of whether it was considered part of the formal Bible.
required deeper philosophical knowledge, like the Gospel of Truth or Gospel of Judas, may have been ideal for some Christians who had access to more education. But texts that make bite-sized claims – like “don’t think about another man’s wife” (Shepherd 29:1), “rid yourself of grief” (Shepherd 40:1), or “believe that God is one” (Shepherd 26:1) – are easier for readers to carry with them and apply to everyday decisions in their lives.
The word “canon,” referring to texts that get a seal of approval from authorities, comes from a Greek word for a measuring stick: which books “measure up”? In religious communities, the idea of “canonical texts” can be especially limiting, determining what believers can or can’t read or believe.
text that doesn’t explicitly mention Jesus, you might assume that it was only read by a small number of early Christian theologians. This, however, isn’t the case.
The Shepherd became one of the most popular texts among Christians for the first five centuries C.E. Even today, there are more surviving manuscripts of the Shepherd from antiquity than of any New Testament text except for the Gospels of Matthew and John.
The visions were translated from Greek into Latin, Coptic, Ethiopic, Arabic and Georgian. Eventually, the text spread
Even figures who did not include the Shepherd among New Testament texts thought it was too important to be discarded. The book was too important to ignore, but too odd to be considered biblical: part of a halfway category that biblical scholar François Bovon called “useful for the soul.”
An open Bible
As the Shepherd helps demonstrate, whether a religious text is included or excluded from the Bible is not necessarily an indicator of its popularity or significance.
While scholars often lament that the Shepherd is boring, pedantic or too long, its style likely made it ideal teaching material for early Christians. Esoteric texts that
Apocryphal literature, however, allows us to see how that wasn’t always the case: Ancient Christians didn’t think they were bound to the same specific set of stories that churches focus on today. The long history of reading apocrypha shows how some Christians have always been interested in reading the “Bible with the back cover torn off” – continually exploring religious ideas. -

Pope Francis opens a big Vatican meeting on the church’s future and says ‘everyone’ is welcome
By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press
POPE Francis said the Catholic Church needed to be rebuilt to make it a place of welcome for “everyone, everyone, everyone,” as he opened a divisive meeting on the future of the church that has sparked hope among progressives and alarm among conservatives.
Francis presided over a solemn Mass in St Peter's Square to formally open the meeting. But he warned both camps in the church's culture wars to put their “human strategies, political calculations or ideological battles" aside and let the Holy Spirit guide debate.
“We're not here to create a parliament, but to walk together with the gaze of Jesus," he said.
Rarely in recent times has a Vatican gathering generated as much hope, hype and fear as this three-week, closeddoor meeting, known as a synod. It won’t make any binding decisions and is only the first session of a two-year process. But it nevertheless has drawn an acute battle line in the church’s perennial leftright divide and marks a defining moment for Francis and his reform agenda.
On the table are calls to take concrete steps to elevate more women to decision-making roles in the church, including as deacons, and for ordinary Catholic faithful to have more of a say in church governance.
Also under consideration are ways to better welcome of LGBTQ+
Catholics and others who have been marginalized by the church, and for new accountability measures to check how bishops exercise their authority to prevent abuses.
Even before it started, the gathering was historic because Francis decided to let women and laypeople vote alongside bishops in any final document produced. While fewer than a quarter of the 365 voting members are non-bishops, the reform is a radical shift away from a hierarchyfocused Synod of Bishops and evidence of Francis’ belief that the church is more about its flock than its shepherds.
The opening Mass and seating arrangements made that clear: The lay participants led off the processional into St Peter's Square, followed by the vested clerics, suggesting their primacy of place. Inside the synod auditorium, laypeople sat at round tables alongside cardinals and bishops, rather than in the upper back row of the Vatican's audience hall as in previous synods.
“It’s a watershed moment,” said JoAnn Lopez, an Indian-born lay minister who helped organize two years of consultations prior to the meeting at parishes where she has worked in Seattle and Toronto.
“This is the first time that women have a very qualitatively different voice at the table, and the opportunity to vote in decision-making is huge,” she said.
In his homily, Francis recalled that his namesake
St Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is celebrated Wednesday, also faced divisions and tensions in his lifetime and responded with prayer, charity, humility and unity when he was told: “Go and rebuild my church."
“Let us do the same!” Francis said. “And if God’s holy people with their shepherds from all over the world have expectations, hopes and even some fears about the synod we are beginning, let us continue to remember that it is not a political gathering, but a convocation in the spirit; not a polarised parliament, but a place of grace and communion.”
He repeated that theme during the first working session of the synod and laid out the ground rules for participants, confirming a media blackout of the meeting. Francis called for a “fasting of the
banner at a piazza nearby reading “Ordain Women.”
Lopez, 34, and other women are particularly excited about the potential that the synod might in some way endorse allowing women to be ordained as deacons, a ministry that is currently limited to men. The issue is on the agenda, and delegation from Lopez' group, Discerning Deacons, was in Rome for sideline events.
For years, supporters of female deacons have argued that women in the early church served as deacons and that restoring the ministry would both serve the church and recognize the gifts that women bring to it.
claiming that Francis’ reforms are sowing confusion, undermining the true nature of the church and all it has taught over two millennia. Among the most vocal are conservatives in the US.
On the eve of the meeting, one of the synod’s most outspoken critics, American Cardinal Raymond Burke, delivered a stinging rebuke of Francis’ vision of “synodality” as well as his overall reform project for the church.
public word" to allow for free debate without the glare or pressures of media coverage.
“More than speaking, the priority is listening,” he said.
Women have long complained they are treated as second-class citizens in the church, barred from the priesthood and highest ranks of power yet responsible for the lion’s share of church work — teaching in Catholic schools, running Catholic hospitals and passing the faith down to next generations.
They have long demanded a greater say in church governance, at the very least with voting rights at the periodic synods but also the right to preach at Mass and be ordained as priests or deacons. Before the opening Mass got under way, advocates for women priests unfurled a giant purple
Francis has convened two study commissions to research the issue and was asked to consider it at a previous synod on the Amazon, but he has so far refused to make any change.
In his homily opening the synod, Francis said such “preconceived” ideas had no place in the gathering. But repeating his new mantra about the church as a place of welcome, he said “tutti, tutti, tutti” must be allowed in: Everyone, everyone, everyone.
The potential that this synod process could lead to real change on previously taboo topics has given hope to many women and progressive Catholics and sparked alarm from conservatives who have warned its call for radical inclusion of LGBTQ+ people could lead to schism.
They have written books, held conferences and taken to social media
“It’s unfortunately very clear that the invocation of the Holy Spirit by some has the aim of bringing forward an agenda that is more political and human than ecclesial and divine,” Burke told a conference entitled “The Synodal Babel.”
In the audience was Cardinal Robert Sarah, who along with Burke and three other cardinals had formally challenged Francis to affirm church teaching on homosexuality and women’s ordination before the synod.
In an exchange of letters made public Monday, Francis didn’t bite and instead said the cardinals shouldn’t be afraid of questions that are posed by a changing world. Asked specifically about church blessings for same-sex unions, Francis suggested they could be allowed as long as such benedictions aren’t confused with sacramental marriage.

BIRDS, WORMS, RABBITS: FRANCIS OF ASSISI WAS SAID TO HAVE LOVED THEM ALL – BUT TODAY’S PET BLESSINGS ON HIS FEAST DAY MIGHT HAVE SEEMED STRANGE TO THE 13TH CENTURY SAINT
By MARY DZON Associate Professor of English, University of Tennessee
(THE CONVERSATION) Each year, if you happen to be in New York around October 4, you may catch sight of something unusual: a whole menagerie of animals being welcomed into the Cathedral of St John the Divine, from spaniels and parrots to even the occasional camel or cow.
Since the end of the 20th century, it has become more and more common in the United States for animals and their human companions to be blessed on or around the feast of St Francis of Assisi. The focus is usually on pets, though St John the Divine’s Episcopal service is especially spectacular, with all kinds of creatures participating in a liturgy that includes a procession into the sanctuary, followed by blessings of individual animals outside.
What would Francis have thought? It’s hard to say – though he wasn’t a fan of his fellow friars keeping pets. But as a scholar of medieval Christianity, I see a long history of people looking to Francis and other Catholic saints as models of caring for all creatures within creation.
Not just Francis
Outdoor blessings of animals have been documented in Rome for at least a century, too – but on January 17, the feast of St Anthony the Abbott, who lived in Egypt in the third and fourth centuries. A number of saints, in fact, can be associated with modern-day blessings.
Anthony, a hermit who lived in the desert, was
not known to have been friendly with animals in the way that Francis was. Yet kindly lions dug a hole for Anthony so he could bury the body of the holy hermit Paul, then licked Anthony’s hands and feet, “begging for his blessing,” according to the account by St Jerome.
Medieval iconography commonly portrayed Anthony with a companion pig, stemming from the fact that a medieval religious order named after him bred pigs to feed people in need. The creatures wore bells and were permitted to roam free in the streets to forage.
A well-behaved group of animals, including two pigs, is gathered before Anthony Abbot in a miniature attributed to the Master of St Veronica, a German painter in the early 15th century. Here the saint holds up his hand as if to bless the kneeling people behind him, as well as the reverent animals in front.
Another saint associated with animals, and known to have blessed them, is Blaise, a bishop of Sebaste.
An influential 13th century collection of saints’ lives, “The Golden Legend,” recounts that Blaise took refuge in a cave to avoid persecution under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. There, “[b]irds brought him food, and wild animals flocked to him and would not leave until he had laid hands on them in blessing. Moreover, if any of them were ailing, they came straight to him and went away cured.”
A Russian icon dating to the 15th century shows Blaise seated on a throne above a gathering of animals, some of whom look up to him in awe.
‘The sweetness of his love’
So why is it that Francis, the founder of the Franciscan religious order, became associated with animals in America? He has long been considered the patron saint of ecology, and bird-bedecked statues of the 13th century saint are often featured in gardens.
Many early texts about Francis speak of his intuitive connection with and concern for animals, especially those he associated with Jesus: lambs, not surprisingly, but also the worm, which reminded him of Christ’s humility.
Today’s most popular story about the Italian saint’s interactions with animals was also the most popular in the Middle Ages, judging from the surviving iconography: his preaching to the birds.
Francis’ first biographer, the Franciscan brother Thomas of Celano, relates that once when Francis was traveling, he came
a trap, caressed it “with motherly affection,” and the creature kept coming back.
Love animals – within limits
The relatively small number of surviving texts that Francis himself wrote reveal his thoughts about the myriad creatures around him. In his wellknown “Canticle of the Creatures,” a song in Italian that praises God and celebrates the beauty of creation, Francis professes a familial relationship with everything in nature, most famously “Brother Sun” and “Sister Moon.”
is essentially left in their keeping.
According to “The Little Flowers of Saint Francis,” a compilation from the 14th century, “Brother Wolf” lived for two years in Gubbio after his lifechanging encounter with the saint: “he tamely entered the houses, going from door to door … and he was kindly fed by the people.” As far as the people were concerned, he was a living embodiment, almost a relic, of the “virtue and holiness of Saint Francis.”
across a “great multitude of birds” and ran toward them. After he greeted them and saw that they didn’t fly away, he was filled with joy and he proceeded to preach a sermon to them, in which he told them they should praise their Creator. After mingling with them, he blessed them and made the sign of the cross, then “gave them permission to fly off.”
Francis likewise exercised gentle authority when he chided “shrieking and chirping” swallows in Alviano, Italy, as he was about to preach to people gathered there: “My sister swallows, now it is time for me also to speak, since you have already said enough.” The swallows duly complied.
Thomas of Celano’s biography of Francis goes on to describe how “even irrational creatures recognized his feeling of tenderness toward them, and sensed the sweetness of his love” – as when he released a rabbit from
Not as well-known is Francis’ “Earlier Rule,” which he wrote to provide guidelines for his friars. Since their purpose in life was to spread the gospel in strict imitation of Christ, especially his poverty, Francis insisted that they not ride on horses or keep companion animals.
As I have learned from my research, this is a standard practice for early Christian and medieval ascetics. Keeping animals was seen as distracting, even frivolous, and risked drawing affections away from God. While Francis seems to have had more than enough love to share, he did insist that most of the animals he interacted with go free.
The haloed wolf
But perhaps Francis was not as opposed to pets as it may seem. Today, probably the second-most well-known story about Francis and animals is the tale of the wolf of Gubbio. After the saint establishes a pact of peace between the hitherto ravenous wolf and the previously terrified townspeople, the wolf
A 19th century painting by Luc-Olivier Merson provides a fascinating depiction of the wolf, endowed with a golden halo. He is seen placidly getting food from the butcher, as he stands on his doorstep, while a cat looks on and a little girl strokes his back.
While Francis and his fellow friars did not embrace the idea of pets, he did promote harmony among animals and humans, making him a fitting source of inspiration for blessings today. As religion scholar Laura Hobgood-Oster has noted, it is remarkable that the many animals gathered in St John the Divine for over two hours each year behave so well. Perhaps they sense the sacred and are attracted to the Franciscan ideal of harmony: all members of creation, joyfully coming together to praise God.

Pope suggests blessings for samesex unions possible in response to five conservative cardinals
By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press
VATICAN CITY (AP)
— Pope Francis has suggested there could be ways to bless same-sex unions, responding to five conservative cardinals who challenged him to affirm church teaching on homosexuality ahead of a big meeting where LGBTQ+ Catholics are on the agenda.
The Vatican on Monday published a letter Francis wrote to the cardinals on July 11 after receiving a list of five questions, or “dubia,” from them a day earlier. In it, Francis suggests that such blessings could be studied if they didn't confuse the blessing with sacramental marriage.
New Ways Ministry, which advocates for LGBTQ+ Catholics, said the letter “significantly advances" efforts to make LGBTQ+ Catholics welcomed in the church and “one big straw towards breaking the camel’s back” in their marginalisation.
The Vatican holds that marriage is an indissoluble union between man and woman. As a result, it has long opposed gay marriage. But even Francis has voiced support for civil laws extending legal benefits to same-sex spouses, and Catholic priests in parts of Europe have been blessing same-sex unions without Vatican censure.
Francis’ response to the cardinals, however, marks a reversal from the Vatican’s current official position. In an explanatory note in 2021, the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith said flat-out that the church couldn’t bless gay unions because “God cannot bless sin.”
In his new letter, Francis reiterated that matrimony is a union between a man and a woman. But responding to the cardinals’ question about homosexual unions and blessings, he said “pastoral charity” requires patience and understanding and that regardless, priests cannot become judges “who only deny, reject and exclude.”
“For this reason, pastoral prudence must adequately discern whether there are forms of benediction, requested by one or more persons, that do not transmit a mistaken conception of marriage,” he wrote. “Because when a benediction is requested, it is expressing a request for help from God, a plea to be able to live better, a trust in a father who can help us to live better.”
He noted that there are situations that are objectively “not morally acceptable.” But he said the same “pastoral charity” requires that people be treated as sinners who might not be fully at fault for their situations.
Francis added that there is no need for dioceses or bishops conferences to turn such pastoral charity into fixed norms or protocols, saying the issue could be dealt with on a caseby-case basis “because the life of the church runs on channels beyond norms.”
Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, welcomed
the pope's openness.
"The allowance for pastoral ministers to bless same-gender couples implies that the church does indeed recognise that holy love can exist between same-gender couples, and the love of these couples mirrors the love of God," he said in a statement. “Those recognitions, while not completely what LGBTQ+ Catholics would want, are an enormous advance towards fuller and more comprehensive equality.”
The five cardinals, all of them conservative prelates from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, had challenged Francis to affirm church teaching on gays, women’s ordination,
the authority of the pope and other issues in their letter.
They published the material two days before the start of a major threeweek synod, or meeting, at the Vatican at which LGBTQ+ Catholics and their place in the church are on the agenda.
The signatories were some of Francis’ most vocal critics, all of them retired and of the more doctrinaire generation of cardinals appointed by St. John Paul II or Pope Benedict XVI.
They were Cardinals Walter Brandmueller of Germany, a former Vatican historian; Raymond Burke of the United States, whom Francis axed
as head of the Vatican supreme court; Juan Sandoval of Mexico, the retired archbishop of Guadalajara; Robert Sarah of Guinea, the retired head of the Vatican’s liturgy office; and Joseph Zen, the retired archbishop of Hong Kong.
Brandmueller and Burke were among four signatories of a previous round of “dubia” to Francis in 2016 following his controversial opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried couples receive Communion. Then, the cardinals were concerned that Francis’ position violated church teaching on the indissolubility of marriage. Francis never responded to their
questions, and two of their co-signatories subsequently died.
Francis did respond this time around. The cardinals didn’t publish his reply, but they apparently found it so unsatisfactory that they reformulated their five questions, submitted them to him again and asked him to simply respond with a yes or no. When he didn’t, the cardinals decided to make the texts public and issue a “notification” warning to the faithful.
The Vatican’s doctrine office published his reply to them a few hours later, though it did so without his introduction in which he urged the cardinals to not be afraid of the synod.

Washington National Cathedral replaces windows honouring Confederacy with stained-glass homage to racial justice
By PETER SMITH Associated Press
THE landmark Washington National Cathedral unveiled new stained-glass windows last week with a theme of racial justice, filling the space that had once held four windows honouring Confederate Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
The new windows depict a march for justice by African Americans, descendants of the very people who would have remained in slavery after the Civil War if the side for which the officers fought had prevailed.
The cathedral had removed the old windows after Confederate symbols featured prominently in recent racist violence.
The dedication service was attended by many clergy from the Washington area's historically Black churches, as well as leaders of social justice organizations. The prayers, Bible readings and brief speeches were interspersed with gospel music and spirituals, as
well as the contemporary song, “Heal Our Land.”
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court, read excerpts from the Rev. Martin Luther King' Jr's “Letter from Birmingham Jail” from 1963.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” she read from King's famed message while jailed in Alabama. “The goal of America is freedom. ... We will win our freedom.” A week earlier, she had spoken at the 60th anniversary of Birmingham church bombing that killed four young Black girls.
The new windows, titled “Now and Forever," are based on a design by artist Kerry James Marshall. Stained glass artisan Andrew Goldkuhle crafted the windows based on that design.
In the new work, African Americans are shown marching — on foot or in a wheelchair — from left to right across the four windows. Some march in profile; some directly face
the viewer with signs proclaiming “FAIRNESS” and “NO FOUL PLAY.” Light floods in through the sky-bright panes of white and blue above the figures.
Marshall, who was born in Birmingham in 1955, invited anyone viewing the new windows, or other artworks inspired by social justice, “to imagine oneself as a subject and an author of a never-ending story is that is still yet to be told.”
The setting is particularly significant in the massive neo-Gothic cathedral, which regularly hosts ceremonies tied to major national events. It is filled with iconography depicting the American story in glass, stone and other media. Images range from presidents to famous cultural figures and state symbols.
But the Lee and Jackson windows “were telling a story that was not a true story,” according to the Very Rev Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of the cathedral. They were installed in 1953
and donated by the United Daughters of the Confederacy,
The windows extolled generals fighting for a cause that sought to “enshrine slavery in our country for all time,” Hollerith said.
He added: “You can't call yourself the National Cathedral, a house of prayer for all people, when there are windows in there that are deeply offensive to a large portion of Americans.”
The cathedral has accompanied the window replacement with a number of public forums discussing the legacy of racism and how monuments were used to burnish the image of the Confederacy as a noble “Lost Cause.”
The new windows will also be accompanied by a poem by scholar Elizabeth Alexander, president of the Mellon Foundation. The poem “American Song” will be engraved beneath the windows.
“A single voice raised, then another,” it says. “We must tell the truth
about our history. ... May this portal be where the light comes in.”
Alexander said in an interview Friday that the poem referred both to the literal light from the windows, which she said beautifully illumines the surrounding stonework, and the figurative light that “enables us to see each other wholly and in community.”
The setting is important in a sanctuary that is also “a communal space, a space that tourists visit, a space where the nation mourns,” Alexander said.
“The story (the windows) tell is one of collective movement, of progress, of people struggling and asserting the values of fairness for all."
The old windows' removal followed the use of Confederate imagery by the racist gunman who massacred members of a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, and by marchers at a 2017 far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that ended with a counterprotester's death.
The original windows, complete with Confederate battle flags, had depicted Lee and Jackson as saintlike figures, with Lee bathed in rays of heavenly light and Jackson welcomed by trumpets into paradise after his death. Those windows are now stored by the cathedral.
The cathedral also is the seat of the Episcopal Church’s presiding bishop and Diocese of Washington.
The bishop of the diocese, the Right Rev Mariann Edgar Budde, joined Hollerith in delivering opening remarks at the dedication.
Hollerith recalled the decision to remove the Confederate windows.
“They were antithetical to our call to be a house of prayer for all,” he said, adding, “There is a lot of work yet to be done.”
