Judo: Five Bahamians eliminated on day 2 By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net ive more Bahamians made their exit on day two of the World Junior Judo Championships yesterday in the Crown Ballroom at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. But D’Arcy Rahming Jr, one of the local coaches, said there’s still a glimmer of hope for the other half of the Bahamian team that will be in action today as the fiveday event, hosted by the Bahamas Judo Federation, swings into high gear. “We still have seven more athletes. We are going through a half of our team,” he said. “We’re going towards the heavier weights where we have our better guys, so we’re hopefully in the crew tomorrow. “We didn’t have any competitors who made it to the finals block yet, but it was a good showing from

Team Bahamas. Everybody is playing the game. No one is getting wiped out.”

Ayton posts double double, Buddy scores 19 in opener By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net OPENING night in the National Basketball Association’s 2018/19 regular season went in opposite directions for Bahamians Deandre Ayton and Chavano ‘Buddy’ Hield simultaneously on Wednesday night. While Ayton and the Phoenix Suns pulled off a 121-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, Hield and the Sacramento Kings suffered a disappointing 123-117 decision to the Utah Jazz. Ayton advised by Ariza Ayton took advantage of some valuable tips from veteran Trevor Ariza to help him get through his rookie regular season opener with the Suns at home at the Talking Stick Resort Arena. “Trevor [Ariza] was like, ‘you know, if you want to be great, this is how you be great, grab every board. Control the glass and grab every board,” said the 7-foot, 1-inch Ayton. “That’s what I tried to do.” Ayton, the second Bahamian to be selected as the first round pick in the NBA draft in June, scored 18 points on 72.7 per cent shooting and he added 10 rebounds, becoming just

the third player in Suns history to make his debut with a double-double, joining Alvan Adams and Shawn Marion. For good measure, Ayton also dished out six assists in 36 minutes as he outshined Mavericks’ No.3 pick Luka Doncic, who came up with 10 points and eye-catching passes to centre DeAndre Jordan. Ayton, however, took a back seat to team-mate Devin Booker, who got some chants of “MVP” by the fans as the guard made his return to the NBA from a broken hand suffered late in the summer, to explode for 35 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter, to go along with seven assists and four rebounds. Ariza, who has been in the NBA with numerous teams since 2004, but signed a one-year deal with Phoenix on July 6, finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. During the post-season interview in the locker room, Ariza somehow showed up Ayton. The feeling was a mutual one for Ayton towards Ariza. “Ay, rook,” Ariza yelled over the camera and voice recorders. “Where the towels at, rook?” “Y’all just pause, everybody wait,” Ayton said,

242 COLOUR RUN ROCKS THE STREETS OF NASSAU THE 242 Colour Run graced the streets of Nassau for the sixth consecutive year on Sunday. The event attracted over 300 participants and scores of volunteers, all which ended up covered in sweat and colour. The event benefitted the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of East Nassau. The overall theme was tied to Rotary International’s theme, “Be The Inspiration”. This year is especially memorable because Bahamian Barry Rassin is currently the President of the Rotary International organisation, with over 1.2 million members worldwide. While Rassin could not be present, he was kept up to date with almost instant photos of the event from fellow Rotarians, and shared “now that is an

rising. “Let me do this right quick.” There was some laughter as the talking stopped and Ayton looked over. The Suns will be back in action on Saturday when they take to the road to play against the Denver Nuggets. Ayton, 20, is being relied upon to get Phoenix back as a contender after they missed the playoffs last year, finishing 21-61 for 5th place in the Pacific Division and 15th in the Western Conference. Hield and Kings crowned Although he got off to a great start, Hield and Sacramento were cooled down as the Utah Jazz danced past them for a 123-117 victory at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Hield, starting at small forward, scored 19 points with six rebounds and an assist in 32 minutes of action. Seven-foot centre Willie Cauley-Stein made his NBA debut as he led their attack with 23 points and seven rebounds, guard De’Aaron Fox had 21 points and seven assists. Guard Donovan Mitchell paced the Jazz attack with 24 points, while centre Rudy Gobert contributed 29 points and 15 rebounds. Tonight, Hield is expected to be back in familiar territory when the Kings face the New Orleans Pelicans. Hield was drafted as the sixth pick in the NBA draft in 2016 by the Pelicans, but was eventually traded to

Sacramento along with Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway, a 2017 first round pick (10th overall) and a 2017 second round pick for DeMarcus Cousins and Omri Casspi on February 20, 2017. Hield, 24, averaged 32.0 minutes with 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last season with the Kings, who didn’t make the playoffs last year after they finished fourth in the Pacific Division and 12th in the Western Conference with a 27-55 record. As a point of interest, Hield and the Kings will entertain Ayton and the Suns in their first headto-head match-up on December 4 and again on January 8 in Sacramento before they play in Phoenix on February 10 and March 23.

JUDO FROM PAGE 1 opponent was good, but I felt I could have taken the match,” said Munnings. “I felt confident in the match, but I made a few mistakes that I will work on in practice.” Munnings, a 20-year-old student also at UB, said his strength definitely will have to improve and he has to perfect his strategy and gripping. But he said he will cherish the opportunity to demonstrate to the Bahamian public how they can compete at the global level. - Dre Hall costly mistake Hall, competing in pool C against Ayton Siquir from Mozambique, got a point and a penalty before he eventually suffered a loss at the 2:15 mark. Siquir threw him for an ippon to claim the victory. “I know I could have done much better. At the beginning of the match, I was winning, but I made a mistake and put my hand over his back and my opponent was able to get the throw,” Hall reflected.

“The game plan was going great, but I made that one simple mistake and it cost me. But champions lose and they come back, so I know what I have to work on now to perform better at future world tournaments. I can promise you, you will see a big improvement in my game.” Hall, an 18-year-old student at the University of the Bahamas, said he was just thrilled to perform in front of the Bahamian crowd, especially with his mother, Nikai Bain, watching. Women’s 57 kg - Mya Beneby outmuscled Beneby, the lone female in action, suffered a quick decision 37 seconds into match against Sarah Leonie Cysique from France. “Personally, I’m not satisfied with what I did. I expected to do a lot better,” said Beneby, a bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games. “I did as best as I could at that time. “But when I walked into the match, I bowed and my opponent was really strong. I underestimated her strength. So when she gripped me, it was really hard to

move. I tried my best to move, but I guess my best wasn’t good enough.” Beneby, a 16-year-old 11th grader at Bahamas Academy, said despite the loss, it was a good experience and she was happy with the support received from the Bahamian people. “I was much more comfortable fighting at home instead of travelling. It was good overall,” she stated. “But the competition was tough. I just have to go back and train a little harder.” Benson Beneby Jr said he was thrilled to watch the Bahamians in action, especially his daughter Mya. “I thought the match went well. For the competition she had, I though she did a good job,” he stated. “This girl was 20 and my daughter is 16, but she held her own against somebody who has much more experience than she has and I think she’s going to do well moving forward.” Beneby Jr said it was good for the event to be held here because it gives the local judokas the exposure that they would not normally receive here at home as the other sports in the country.

Another parent, Timothy Munnings, was pleased with what he saw. “I’m very proud of my son’s efforts,” he stressed. “He’s been training really hard. In fact, the whole team has been through a vigorous training on the beach and in the gym. They have been doing a lot of stuff that you expect a team to be doing for a World Championships such as this. “I’m very proud of him. Unfortunately, he made a slight mistake. These guys are strong and he got rolled over. He felt very confident that he could have won, but at this level, even in track and field, you could lose by a split second. He lost by a mistake. I’m very proud of him.” As the Director of Sports at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Munnings said this was just another indication that the Bahamas is indeed a sports tourism destination and has the capacity to hold any major international event. But federation president D’Arcy Rahming Sr said hosting the event didn’t come without its pains. “It’s fantastic. It’s everything that we have imagined,

the people have been wonderful, the visitors as well as us, who are hosting this event,” he said. “A lot of people have put in some long hours and it’s like a dream come true.” The good thing, according to Rahming Sr, is that the Bahamas is hosting people from so far around the world and this can be considered the launch of judo in the country, although it comes with a price tag of about 1/2 million dollars by the time it’s over and done with on Sunday. “We were so blessed to host the IAAF World Relays. This is on the magnitude of that, so I feel pretty good about that,” he added. “I hope to do a yearly event like this because this sport model is something that we can continue to develop.” With three days remaining, Rahming Sr is encouraging the Bahamian public to come out and view some top notch competition that many will probably not have the ability to pay for if it was held overseas. The event was officially opened by Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Lanisha Rolle.

More schools should keep records of their athletes’ feats/achievements WHILE interviewing coach Rupert Gardiner on Silver Lightning’s second annual William ‘Knucklehead’ Johnson Cross Country Championships that was held over the weekend, something came across my mind. I asked Gardiner if he remembered who won the battle between himself and Johnson when they both competed in the distance races for CC Sweeting and AF Adderley High Schools respectively. He couldn’t answer. What he did remember was that Johnson was clearly the better competitor on the track, still holding the Bahamas national record in the men’s 1,500 metres. Gardiner, however, felt he got the better of the two on the road, having secured a number of titles, including the Model Bakery Mile. If there’s one thing to note, they both held their own for their respective schools. That brings me to my observation. Have you ever visited the offices of our local high schools and noticed

the amount of trophies they have on display from winning various sporting competitions? In most cases, they are just placed there and no credit is given to the athletes who would have secured them. How many schools have kept records of the accomplishments of their athletes and teams? This could be a good project for a department to undertake to produce the list, even if it’s just for records sake. By the same token, how many schools have instituted their own Hall of Fame or awards recognition banner. This is another project that could be developed with the view of creating a Wall of Fame for those current students to remember the accomplishments of those student-athletes who would have paved the way. I remember one year that Gardiner, then a physical education teacher at CC Sweeting, hosted their inaugural Hall of Fame. At the time, the event heightened the spirit of the performing athletes and even the student body. They didn’t produce another one and not too

Fame in November too. In most cases, we brush aside the achievements of our athletes, only celebrating them in the moment. But could you imagine the level of achievement we can accomplish if most of our athletes are recognised for their feats. many local schools have followed in putting together such an elaborate event until now with the Alumni Association of St Augustine’s College getting set to host their first Lighthouse Awards and Gala on November 24 at the British Colonial Hilton. A number of persons will be honoured. Among them are Shaunae Miller-Uibo as the rising star, Alpheus ‘Hawk’ Finlayson as the spotlight athlete, Oscar Francis, posthumously for sports, Maryann Higgs-Clarke for one of the alumni achievement awards, Eugene ‘Geno’ Nairn for the lifetime award and the Cargill Family for the legacy award. So many times, especially on the various social media

networks, there is so much dialogue about who were and are the greatest athletes in the country, but there is nothing to document it. Efforts like these could produce a start because at least the schools that the majority of our athletes would have excelled at before they went on to prominent international success would have some information in their database. We’ve seen and heard about a number of our athletes being celebrated by their various high schools and colleges/universities in the United States. Arnold Bain Jr, a stellar track and field athlete turned basketball administrator, is the latest as he will go into the 2018 Class of the Howard University Hall of

World Junior Judo Championships The Bahamas Judo Federation, led by D’Arcy Rahming Sr, should be commended for the stellar manner in which the International Judo Federation’s World Junior Judo Championships is progressing at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. Rahming Sr said it took a lot of faith and a lot of integrity to have been able to pull off the event that will continue through Sunday. It’s not one of our traditional sports, so it was so encouraging to see the sport taking the spotlight at the global level with more than 500 judokas from over 70 countries here competing. Obviously, the competition is at another level for the Bahamian competitors,

but by hosting the event, they are getting the exposure to the point where the federation can get the recognition that it deserves in changing the mindset and the landscape of sports in the country. Too many times, we feel that sports in the country is only geared towards the traditional sports like basketball, softball, volleyball, swimming and track and field. But this is certainly a breakthrough for judo and as such, they should be commended for the effort. The medals may not come here at home, but moving forward, this should inspire the competitors and those coming behind them to take their training to another level for future international competitions, whether here or abroad. One thing is for certain, the Atlantis resort has turned out to be a fabulous venue for the championships. Visitors have given the facilities high marks as it provides a complete package with hotel accommodations and both training and competition at the same venue.

BRAZILIANS ZARIF, DE ALMEIDA TO ATTEND SSL FINALS THE 2018 Star World Champions, Brazilians Jorge Zarif and Guilherme de Almeida, are expected attend the SSL Finals 2018 December 3-8. It’s tradition and one of the SSL Finals rules of admission that the current year Star World Champions are invited to join the top 10 skippers of the ranking and the VIPs at the SSL Finals in Nassau, Bahamas. And this year the Star Sailors League is very happy to welcome Olympic Finn sailor and former Finn World Champion Jorge Zarif with his crew and long time Star sailor, Guilherme de Almeida. Jorge Zarif attended the SSL Finals in three different occasions. The first time was in 2014, invited as a very young Finn World Champion, both junior and senior, then again in 2015 for his Finn sailing achievements. He was accompanied both times by very expert Brazilian Star crew Henry Boening, and they seemed to have a great feeling in 2014 finishing fourth, but not so great the

second time when they were last. Zarif was invited once again to the SSL Finals in 2016 by Bruno Prada (BRA) who, as first ranked crew, could pick his own skipper and attend the event. His best result in Nassau, Bahamas, remains the fourth he conquered in 2014 though. “It was the only way we could be admitted at the SSL Finals,” said Jorge Zarif. “We had to win the Star World Championship to go to Nassau, and it was one of the goals for this year for me and Guilherme. “We’ve been training for a year together, we finished third at the Western Hemisphere in Miami in May, our coach Luca Modena optimised the boat before that, and followed us with training sessions throughout the year, but I was also very busy with my Olympic campaign on the Finn, so I didn’t have so much time. Winning this title feels special, not only because I will be going to Nassau thanks to it, but because my late father was a Star and

The leader in the ladies’ category was Tara Johnson of E&U Watercoolers with a 529 high three game set. She was followed by Tara Culmer of Island Game Strokers with a 523 second high set. This year the race will feature a limited edition “Piggie medal” for the first time, an “ode” to the island’s worldfamous swimming pigs. Bahamian Olympic gold medallist Pauline DavisThompson will be the patron of the event for the fourth time. She will also be coaching a clinic for young track athletes in Exuma, particularly in the areas of sprints and hurdles, in conjunction with the marathon. “2020 is around the corner and we need to find our next set of Olympic gold medallists. And we know Exuma (has) a ton of amazing athletes,” Mrs Davis-Thompson said. For the fourth year in a row, BAF Financial & Insurance Limited will be the title sponsor of the event. The Exuma marathon celebrates Pompey as “our very own hero for social justice”. In the 1830s, Pompey, a slave, led a rebellion against his plantation owner, Lord John Rolle, who had declared that Pompey and 76 other slaves would be moved from Exuma to Cat Island. Local historians have said that Pompey’s rebellion marked the birth of the “freedom fight” that concluded with the emancipation of local slaves in 1838. THE BOSTON Red Sox celebrates after winning Game 5 of a baseball American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros on Thursday, Oct. 18,

Red Sox finish off Astros in 5 games, head to World Series By KRISTIE RIEKEN AP Sports Writer HOUSTON (AP) — David Price put his postseason woes behind him, pitching the Boston Red Sox back into another World Series with a 4-1 victory over the defending champion Houston Astros last night. Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer as the Red Sox stunned Justin Verlander and the Astros in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series to win the best-of-seven set 4-1, a perfect 43rd birthday present for rookie manager Alex Cora. After dropping the opener at home, Boston took four straight — including three in a row at

Minute Maid Park to improve to 5-0 on the road in these playoffs. Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr and the 108-win Red Sox will try to bring Boston its fourth crown in 15 years when they open the World Series on Tuesday night at Fenway Park against the Los Angeles Dodgers or Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox were last in the World Series when they won it all in 2013. “We got four more wins. That was very, very special, absolutely. But we want more,” Price said. Los Angeles has a 3-2 lead in the NLCS going into Game 6 tonight at Miller Park. Left fielder Andrew Benintendi caught a long fly for the last out — not nearly as dramatic as his

game-saving diving grab the previous night. Even so, it set off an enthusiastic celebration for the Red Sox, who gathered to pose for pictures in the middle of the diamond. Despite leading the majors in wins during the regular season, the Red Sox were underdogs against a Houston team that defeated the Dodgers in last year’s World Series and romped past Cleveland in the Division Series this month. But stars Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and the Astros hobbled to the finish in a humbling defeat. Still, no team has repeated as World Series champs since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000.

Pitching on only three days’ rest after Boston ace Chris Sale was ruled out while recovering from a stomach illness, Price struck out nine in six shutout innings of three-hit ball. The left-hander, who has had a rough time in Boston since signing a $217 million contract before the 2016 season, entered 0-9 with a 6.16 ERA in 11 career postseason starts. Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez hit an early homer off Verlander, and Price made the lead stand up into the late innings. Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his third save of the series. Martinez reached the World Series by beating the team that released him during spring training four years ago.

BRONCOS RETURN 2 INTERCEPTIONS FOR TDS, BEAT CARDINALS 45-10 By BOB BAUM AP Sports Writer EMMANUEL Sanders threw and caught touchdown passes, Denver returned two interceptions for first-quarter touchdowns and the Broncos snapped a fourgame losing streak with a 45-10 rout of the Arizona Cardinals last night. Todd Davis returned rookie Josh Rosen’s deflected pass for a touchdown on the second play of the game and Chris Harris Jr took another back 53 yards for a score with 2:02 left in the quarter as the Broncos (3-4) opened a 21-3 lead. Rosen threw three interceptions and fumbled the ball away twice on a rough night that began badly for him and never got better. He limped off the field after he was sacked for the fifth time, on a fourth-and-16 play near the end of the game. The Cardinals (1-6), down 35-3 at the half, fell to 0-4 at home for the first time since 1979. Case Keenum completed 14 of 21 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown with one interception for Denver. Phillip Lindsay rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries, including a 28-yard TD run. Rosen had called a time out after the game’s first play. Then his pass was deflected by the

Bahama Art & Handicraft donated a hand-made sign to the best costume, which went to a youngster dressed as “Wonder Woman”. Many people stayed for the prize awards due to the top prize giveaways for the year. A brand new venture, Blackbeard’s Escape, also donated prizes to the 242 Colour Run. The experience is the first “escape room” to be opened in the Bahamas, and is now taking bookings for tourists, locals, families, groups and corporate teambuilding events. The event would not have been possible without the ongoing support of many established businesses. Aquapure Water has been providing hydration to the event since inception in 2013, Powerade provided after-race electrolyte drinks, and Sands Beer was available for the adults. BWA products Biore and McVities provided sponsorship and samples for each of the race bags.

Rosen passed but there was no one near the ball except Harris, who returned it 53 yards to make it 21-3. The Broncos made it 28-3 in the second quarter when Keenum found Harris wide open on a 64-yard TD play, the Denver receiver doing a front flip over the goal line. A pass interference play against Bene Benwikere in the end zone set up Royce Freeman’s one-yard TD run that made it 35-3 with 21 seconds left in the half. The run

In all, over $5,000 worth of products and prizes were handed out to the participants. Every participant received a swag bag with donated products, a colour packet, “Be the Inspiration” Rotary sunglasses, tattoos, their bib number, and a t-shirt. The event went off almost without a hitch due to the amount of last minute registrations, some t-shirt sizes were mix-matched. The 242 Colour Run supports local business, and Tees-RUs, based in Spanish Wells, was able to print additional shirts to meet the demand. “We had a great time this year, with over 300 participants from across the Bahamas” said Lee McCoy, race director and owner of PROMPT, the organisers. “Participants came in from Abaco, Freeport, and even as far away as Puerto Rico. “Our biggest problem was three weeks before only 30 people were registered - we’d really like

The Arizona fans booed as the team left the field for the half, while there were cheers from the sizable contingent of orange-clad Broncos supporters. FITZ SCORES The Cardinals got their only touchdown in the third quarter, Rosen throwing four yards to Larry Fitzgerald for the score. Fitzgerald’s first TD catch of the season came at the end of an 11-play, 63-yard drive that followed Patrick Peterson’s interception. Fitzgerald’s 111 career TDs tie him with Tony Gonzalez for seventh on the NFL’s career list. INJURIES Denver lost two players to injury in the first half. Rookie punt returner DaeSean Hamilton left with a knee injury after Arizona’s Brandon Williams rolled into his legs as he was waiting for the ball to make a fair catch. Williams was penalized for interfering on the play. Safety Darian Stewart left the game with a neck injury in the first quarter. Arizona tight end Ricky SealsJones, trying to run down Rosen’s fumble, slammed his left forearm against an opponent’s helmet and didn’t return.

to encourage everyone to register as soon as possible next year so we can have a bigger and better event in 2019.” Long time volunteer and supporter Tangerine Dinnick brought her new company Evolve Functional Fitness to the event. Her trainers’ enthusiasm and support of the event was clearly evident, with the Evolve brand livening up the crowd with a prerace stretch routine, prizes, and over-abundant excitement at their colour station. Doctors Hospital and Bahamas Waste provided logistical support to the event, as they have done many times in the past. Along with unwavering corporate support, many participants return every year. Brothers Cameron and Dorian Roach, of the Bahamas Triathlon Association, competed again with Cameron’s daughter Kami. Large groups also took

part, such as Let’s Dance Bahamas and Bahamas Realty. Every year the 242 Colour Run brings camaraderie, family fun, and goodwill to all who participate and volunteer. Coming up, PROMPT has a busy November the month starts with the Conchman Triathlon in Freeport. The oldest triathlon in the Bahamas, the Conchman attracts participants from across the Bahamas as well as internationally. The Exuma Marathon (Run for Pompey) follows in Exuma on November 10th, and the Bahamas Half Marathon, 5k and 10k takes place on November 18. The month ends with the 5k Hope Town Turtle Trot, a play on the American Thanksgiving tradition of a “turkey trot”. Interested persons can visit their website www.RacePROMPT. com for more information and how to register for the various races.

Track star Semenya adds fans as testosterone battle drags By MELISSA MURPHY AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) — South African track star Caster Semenya can add LeBron James to the list of admirers ahead of her showdown with the international track and field governing body. James watched the world and Olympic 800-metre champion win a race last month in Berlin. She’s his fan, and they’re both Nike-sponsored athletes. “You know, in American language they say ‘you’re dope,’” said a smiling Semenya, who wore James’ white and gold Nike shoes with a lion head on the back. “He told me to keep on working hard, I’m a special kid. I was deeply touched.” James is just one of Semenya’s global fans, supporting a fight against world track officials that’s dragged on nearly a decade. The IAAF wants to limit the eligibility of female middle-distance runners who have naturally high levels of testosterone. Semenya — who has not often spoken openly about the challenges — is taking control of her message, joining Nike sponsored-athletes like James, Colin Kaepernick and Simone Biles in a series of ads. In the video “I was Born to Do This,” Semenya asks: “Will it be easier for you if I wasn’t so fast? Will it be simpler for you if I stopped winning? Would you be more comfortable if I was less proud?” Semenya says her audience is not her critics or competitors. “It’s just to inspire the youth, to be honest,” she said. “They see light in me. So they can see a better future.” Semenya received the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award on Wednesday night from the Women’s Sports Foundation and Billie Jean King. Semenya flew 23 hours from Johannesburg, via Dubai, for her first trip to New York. “Caster is a woman on a mission,” King told The Associated Press. King and the Women’s Sports Foundation are supporting Semenya in her latest fight against the IAAF. Females would be required to take hormones to lower their testosterone to compete in international events and the Olympics.

Semenya and Athletics South Africa are challenging the proposal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. On Tuesday, her hearing got pushed back to February, with the possible start of the IAAF’s rule on March 26. Early in Semenya’s career, her improved times and what some competitors considered a masculine appearance drew the attention of the IAAF. Before the 2009 world championships in Berlin, the IAAF made her undergo gender tests and the results were not released. But on the day of the final, it became public she’d been tested. The 18-year-old Semenya won the 800 title despite the distractions. Then the IAAF stopped Semenya from competing for 11 months while conducting more tests. She was allowed to return in 2010, with no explanation from the governing body. Semenya says her family deals with the critics based on how she responds. “You cannot control what other people say. I’m the one who can control that by being me,” she said. “By being that kid that they raised. That kid with respect and a sense of humour.” The IAAF wants to lower natural testosterone in female middle-distance runners to a maximum of 5 nanomoles per liter of blood. The governing body argues that naturally high testosterone provides a “competitive advantage.” There is no equivalent rule for male athletes. The previous IAAF maximum of 10 nanos for all females was enacted in 2011 and struck down in 2015 by CAS after Indian sprinter Dutee Chand challenged the rule. The current IAAF attempt seeks to narrow the rule to females who run the 400, 800 and 1,500. “It is always concerning, as a matter of law, when policies appear to be targeted to limit the participation of a small group of individuals,” said Suzanne Goldberg, director of the Center for Gender & Sexuality Law at Columbia University. Semenya’s legal firm Norton Rose Fulbright said in statement in June it is necessary to challenge the IAAF’s proposal to “protect the rights of

Growing up playing soccer with the boys in the province of Northern Limpopo, Semenya drew strength from meeting Nelson Mandela on several occasions after winning the 2009 world title. “The wisdom words he has shared with me — it was about educate yourself to be better,” she said. “Education is the key to success. Sports does unite people. It changed other people’s lives. “Treat other people with love and respect. If you can learn that, life is just simple.” A sports science major at the University of Pretoria, she went on to win 800 world titles in 2011 and 2017 and gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Russian runner Mariya Savinova — one of the competitors who publicly criticised Semenya’s times and physique — was banned from the sport for doping in 2017. Her 800 gold medal from the 2012 London Olympics was handed to second-place finisher Semenya. King joined more than 60 athletes who wrote an open letter to the IAAF in July, urging it to rescind the proposed standard. US soccer star Megan Rapinoe called out sports federations

for policing female bodies but “never our male counterparts.” She pointed to the competitive advantage of the wingspan of Michael Phelps, not to mention the long legs of Usain Bolt. Competitive advantages may include the age an athlete starts training, the quality of coaches and facilities, nutrition and other factors. “Singling out women’s testosterone levels from all possible factors that influence athletes’ success is not a sensible or just answer,” Goldberg said. The 27-year-old Semenya is married to Violet Raseboya, her longtime partner and former runner, who is setting up a foundation to benefit youth in South Africa. Semenya plans to defend her 800 world title in September in Doha, Qatar, and her Olympic gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games. The long-term goal is to break the 800 world record of 1:53.28 set in 1983. She’s about 1 second off the mark. In the meantime, she’ll keep training until her future is decided by the court. “South Africa is a rainbow nation for me,” said Semenya, who carried the flag at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. “I stand for my country, I stand for my people, I stand for people who love and support me. They appreciate me for who I am. It’s fantastic.”

Australia 47-1 but Pakistan has 2 days to win test series ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Babar Azam just missed a maiden test century but Pakistan gave itself more than two days to win the short test series against Australia and made a good start yesterday. Azam fell for a career-best 99 and captain Sarfraz Ahmed added 81 before he declared their second innings over at 400-9 for an overall lead of 537 runs. Pakistan delayed the declaration, mindful of Australia escaping defeat in the first test in Dubai last week. Pakistan declared there also, and gave itself just under five sessions to bowl out Australia. But Australia, given an improbable 462 to win, held out with two wickets to spare. This time, Pakistan has set Australia a monstrous 538 to win in more than six sessions, and already undermined that notion by taking out Shaun Marsh for 4 with an incredible delivery by debutant Mir Hamza. By stumps on day three, Australia was 47-1, Aaron Finch was on 24, and Tim Head on 17. Pakistan suffered a late collapse but its lead had already passed 500. It resumed from 144-2 overnight and the morning session was lowlighted by Azhar Ali’s embarrassing run out on 64. Ali steered a delivery through slips and the ball rolled towards the boundary. Ali didn’t run, believing he’d hit a four, and met Asad Shafiq in the middle of the pitch to talk. But the ball stopped before the boundary at third man, and the chasing Mitchell Starc threw it at the striker’s end and captain Tim Paine whipped the bails off.

AUSTRALIA’S PETER SIDDLE, center, reacts as Pakistan’s Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam runs between the wicket during their cricket test match in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018. (AP Photo/Kamran Jebreili) Ali, playing his 67th test, and Shafiq, playing his 63rd, were dumbfounded while the Australians celebrated a little slice of luck. That dropped Pakistan to 160-4, but Shafiq, and particularly Azam and Ahmed took advantage of a tiring Australia attack. Shafiq was the only wicket to fall in the middle session, caught at point for 44. Then Azam and Ahmed dominated, briskly scoring 133 runs for the sixth wicket. Australia couldn’t break the partnership even with the second new ball.

EUROPEAN SOCCER WEEKEND: WHAT TO WATCH IN THE MAIN LEAGUES

Azam was on 99 when he fell lbw to seamer Mitchell Marsh while trying to play across the line. Azam’s disappointment was obvious. His 161-ball knock included six fours and three sixes. Offspinner Nathan Lyon, burdened with much of the workload, then grabbed two wickets in one over, those of Bilal Asif (15) and Yasir Shah (4). Legspinner Marnus Labuschagne got Ahmed when the captain missed a sweep and was trapped lbw. Ahmed faced 123 balls and hit five fours and

a six. Lyon finished with 4-135 from 43 overs, and eight wickets in the match. Marsh was forced to open the innings after regular opener Usman Khawaja injured his troublesome left knee during a warm-up before the third day’s play. He didn’t field all day and had to drop down the order. Marsh has struggled in the series, which has ended for him with scores of 7, 0, 3 and 4. The lefthander couldn’t cope against the Pakistan seamers, and gave Hamza his first test wicket when he lost his off stump.

SPAIN Real Madrid and Barcelona hope the international break will help them turn things around in Spain. Barcelona hasn’t won in four straight league games, while Madrid is winless in four matches in all competitions. Second-place Barcelona hosts leader Sevilla on Saturday, with Sergi Roberto and Luis Suarez likely to be available after recovering from injuries. Sevilla has won four straight in the league, including a 3-0 rout of Madrid, and will be counting on Portugal striker Andre Silva, one of the league’s top scorers. Madrid hosts Levante on Saturday. Cross-town rival Atletico, in third position, visits struggling Villarreal. The top six are separated by two points, with Espanyol and Alaves fifth and sixth respectively. Espanyol travels to promoted Huesca on Sunday, while Alaves visits Celta Vigo on Friday. By Tales Azzoni in Madrid ENGLAND Jose Mourinho looks to improve on his poor Stamford Bridge record as Manchester United coach when he returns to former club Chelsea for the game of the weekend in the Premier League. Despite his team’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Newcastle before the international break, Mourinho remains in a vulnerable position at United amid media reports the club’s hierarchy are losing faith in him. A victory on Saturday would ease some pressure but Mourinho has lost on all three visits with United to Chelsea, where he won three league titles in two spells and was once revered by fans. United is eighth, seven points behind third-place Chelsea, which is tied on points with leader Manchester City and second-place Liverpool. City is at home to Burnley on Saturday, the same day Liverpool travels to Huddersfield with injury problems affecting its squad. Sadio Mane has had hand surgery, while Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk were also hurt on international duty. By Steve Douglas ITALY Inter and AC Milan enter Sunday’s city derby on hot streaks. Inter has won six straight in Serie A and the Champions League while Milan is on an eight-match unbeaten run in Serie A and the Europa League. Milan is 10th but has played a match fewer than most of the other teams and victory would see it move to within a point of Inter, which is third. Gonzalo Higuain will look to continue his scoring streak in his first Derby della Madonnina having netted six in his last five matches. Juventus is already threatening to run away with the league as it holds a six-point advantage over second-place Napoli. The Bianconeri host Genoa on Saturday, shortly before Napoli visits Udinese. By Daniella Matar in Milan FRANCE All eyes will be on Alsace when Monaco goes to Strasbourg on Saturday for Thierry Henry’s first game in charge. The French great, his country and Arsenal’s record scorer, has replaced Leonardo Jardim as Monaco coach. Henry has his work cut out, with the 2017 champion in 18th place with only one win from nine games. League leader Paris Saint-Germain will be odds-on to make it a recordextending 10 wins in a row when it faces Amiens at the Parc des Princes on Saturday. PSG has already scored 32 goals and, with Kylian Mbappe in great form, Amiens faces a difficult task. Second-place Lille aims to maintain its strong start when it travels Saturday to Dijon, which has faded after setting the pace early on. Third-place Marseille has a tough trip to southern rival Nice on Sunday. By Jerome Pugmire in Paris GERMANY Bayern Munich hopes to end a fourgame wait for victory at Wolfsburg on Saturday. Bayern, chasing a record-extending sixth straight Bundesliga title, started the season with seven wins in all competitions before going into a rut. Niko Kovac is under scrutiny in his first big job. The former Eintracht Frankfurt coach received belated backing from Bayern’s powerbrokers - chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and president Uli Hoeness - after the side’s 3-0 defeat at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach. Borussia Dortmund is the league’s only unbeaten team. Lucien Favre’s players are high on confidence after a spectacular 4-3 win over Augsburg and a come-from-behind success against Bayer Leverkusen. Dortmund faces bottom club Stuttgart on Saturday, when new coach Markus Weinzierl will aim to get his tenure off to a morale-boosting start. Schalke bids to keep its improvement going against Werder Bremen in Saturday’s late game. Schalke started with five defeats before bouncing back with wins over Mainz and Fortuna Duesseldorf. A-League: Question marks over Usain Bolt, attendance decline By DENNIS PASSA AP Sports Writer AS the A-League begins its 14th season, the biggest question in Australia seems to be: Will he or won’t he? “He” is the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, who retired from track and field competition last year with eight Olympic sprint gold medals and world records in the 100- and 200-metres. Those are marks he set at the Berlin world championships in 2009. And both records still stand as Bolt attempts to become a professional soccer player with the Central Coast Mariners. The 32-year-old Jamaican scored two goals in his starting debut for the Mariners in a trial game last Friday. He still doesn’t have a football contract, but the Mariners tweeted a video of his first goal and it has been watched more than six million times, giving a fair indication of the worldwide interest in Bolt’s career change.

the club. Another indication that Bolt’s status with the team — and league— may not be a long-lasting one: A-League brass didn’t include a mention of Bolt in new releases for the official season launch on Monday. On the weekend, a disgruntled Bolt complained on his social media account that he was ordered to take a doping test. “So guys, I’ve retired from track and field looking to become a footballer but look at this,” he posted as he posed with an official pink slip. “How am I going to get a drug test today? I’m not even a professional footballer yet.”

• Here are some other things to know about the 10-team A-League, which begins play today when Adelaide United hosts Sydney FC: WILL BOLT LOCK IN A CONTRACT? Bolt’s two-goal performance ignited the interest of several European clubs, most particularly Malta’s Valletta FC. The club’s chief executive officer Ghasston Slimen told Australian media that he has offered Bolt a twoyear contract. Valletta is owned by the Abu Dhabibased Sanban Investment Group. “We play the final of the Super Cup on December 13 ... so can you imagine Usain Bolt lifting the Super Cup trophy 10 years after he broke the record in Beijing? It will be history and it should happen.” Bolt is in Australia on an extended trial period, and Mariners’ coaching staff might not make a decision until January on his fulltime status with

The 32-year-old Honda, who has played for clubs in Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Japan and Mexico, said he’s happy to deal with the expectations that come with his marquee status. “I’ve got used to this pressure many times,” Honda said at the league launch. “I made people disappointed and also I’ve made people happy. I don’t have any magic.”

THE TRIBUNE

Welcome rookies: Ayton, Bamba and Trier sparkle in NBA debuts By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer ORLANDO, Florida (AP) — Mo Bamba heard his name over Orlando’s public address system for the first time during introductions, and waved his arms to the crowd asking for their cheers. Then the game started. He didn’t have to solicit noise anymore. Welcome to the NBA, rookie class of 2018-19. There were 31 newcomers who got their first official playing time Wednesday, the initial hectic night on this season’s schedule. Some of those debuts were forgettable, some barely noticeable, but a few — like No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton in Phoenix, the No. 6 overall pick in Bamba and even undrafted rookie Allonzo Trier in New York — stood out. “Felt pretty good,” Bamba said. “It was everything I expected it to be.” He wasn’t the only rookie smiling Wednesday. Ayton made his first three shots and finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as Phoenix eased past Dallas. Bamba was clutch for Orlando, putting together a 13-point, seven-rebound, two-block effort in the Magic win over Miami. And maybe it was fitting — Ayton and Trier had plenty of big nights together at Arizona as collegians last season, and they had another one Wednesday, albeit about 2,400 miles apart. Trier had 15 points for the Knicks in their easy win over Atlanta, two of those points coming on a

down-the-lane dunk where he went either past or over four Hawks players, a play that even had New York coach David Fizdale celebrating. “Some things happen in a game sometimes and you just go, ‘Whoa,’” Fizdale said. After two nights of this season, 35 players have made their NBA debuts. That’s just the first of many waves; 119 rookies got into at least one game last season, a figure helped mightily by the emergence of two-way contracts. Last season’s newcomer total was the league’s highest since 1949-50 when 120 debuted — in large part because what was the 12-team BAA the year before became the 17-team NBA that season. Atlanta’s Trae Young, the No. 5 pick in the draft, made his first NBA shot. The make was a notable event for Young, who said that he airballed his first shot attempt in high school, in college and at the NBA Summer League in July. Progress, indeed. “This is just one of many,” Young said, not sounding worried about the Hawks’ rocky opener. None of the rookies so far have had monster numbers, but then again, those are rare in debuts. The record for points by someone in his first game is held by Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 43 for the Philadelphia Warriors at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks on October 24, 1959. A year later, Oscar Robertson’s first NBA game resulted in his first triple-double

(AP Photo/Matt York) - 21 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists. LeBron James had 25 in 2003, two months shy of his 19th birthday. Those were the start of great careers. But bad first games don’t doom anyone to a life of mediocrity, either. Steve Nash, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming and Dennis Rodman combined for zero points in their debuts. Kobe Bryant went scoreless his first time out

as well, and he’ll be joining that foursome in the Basketball Hall of Fame soon anyway. Michael Jordan shot 5 for 16 to start his career. Kevin Durant went 7 for 22 in his opening game with Seattle. “You never forget the first game,” said Miami’s Dwyane Wade, who scored 18 points in his debut in 2003 and still recalls how he spent some of that night being guarded by Allen

Iverson. “You’re going to get better. You’re nervous. You can’t change that. It’s going to be a big moment in your life, and you’re going to grow from that moment. And then you’re going to have a lot of other moments.” Ayton might have looked ready on the court, but in the locker room he’s going to be reminded of his newcomer status all season. The Suns’ Trevor Ariza

interrupted Ayton’s first NBA postgame interview. “Where are the towels, rook?” Ariza asked, reminding the rookie of one of his rookie duties. Ayton stopped, stepped out and returned with a tall stack of towels. Lighthearted hazing notwithstanding, the Suns know what they have. “I knew he was something special,” Phoenix guard Devin Booker said. “I think people are always nervous for their first game. That’s usually three trips down the court and then it just comes back to basketball. When you are that talented and have the abilities that he does, the game is just going to come to you.” Some of the openers on Wednesday were statistically non-existent — three debuts were logged officially at lasting less than one minute, seven of the rookies on the floor didn’t attempt any shots, and the average per-rook was less than 5 points per game. Ayton and Bamba dazzled. No. 3 pick Luka Doncic had 10 points and eight rebounds, but misfired on 11 of his 16 shots. No. 11 pick Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 11 points for the Clippers. It wasn’t just lottery guys who stood out - second-round pick Bruce Brown started for Detroit, and Trier made MSG take notice. The challenge now for Trier, Bamba, Ayton and every other rookie? Getting ready for the rest of the season. “Now it’s just a matter of doing that 81 more times,” Bamba said.

DEROZAN, ALDRIDGE LEAD SPURS PAST TIMBERWOLVES SAN ANTONIO (AP) — DeMar DeRozan had 28 points in his San Antonio debut, LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points and 19 rebounds and the Spurs overcame a 23-point performance by Minnesota’s Jimmy Butler in a 112-108 victory Wednesday night in a matchup of teams coming off a tumultuous offseason. DeRozan was acquired from Toronto after the Spurs responded to Kawhi Leonard’s trade demands by dealing their star forward and Danny Green for the Raptors’ All-Star guard and Jakob Poeltl. Minnesota is facing a similar trade demand from Butler, who has opted to play through it. Butler, who has told Minnesota that he will not re-sign with the team in the offseason, added seven rebounds and three assists in an active 31 minutes. DeRozan banked in the eventual winning shot in the final minute against Butler, driving hard to the basket against the 6-foot-8 forward and then pulling up from 12 feet to give San Antonio a 110-108 lead with 32.4 seconds remaining. DeRozan sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining after Minnesota’s Derrick Rose missed a runner in the lane. Jeff Teague scored 27 points, and Andrew Wiggins added 20 points for the Timberwolves. Rudy Gay had 18 points, and Bryn Forbes had 11 points in his first start at point guard for the Spurs. KNICKS 126, HAWKS 107 NEW YORK (AP) — Tim Hardaway Jr scored 31 points, sparking the Knicks during their franchiserecord, 49-point second quarter, and New York beat Atlanta in its first game under coach David Fizdale. Hardaway had 16 points in the period, when the Knicks matched the Hawks’ point total for the entire first half. New York led 72-49 at the break.

Trae Young finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, shooting 5 for 14 in his NBA debut. Taurean Prince scored 21 points for the Hawks, who were overwhelmed in their first game under Lloyd Pierce. Four other Knicks scored at least 15, while rookie Kevin Knox finished with 10 and was just 4 for 16. Hardaway and the Knicks started slowly, as he had missed his first four shots and the Knicks started 0 for 9 when they took a timeout trailing 10-2. During that break, George Holmes of Northport, New York, nailed a halfcourt shot to win $10,000, and suddenly the New Yorkers couldn’t miss. PELICANS 131, ROCKETS 112 HOUSTON (AP) — Anthony Davis had 32 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists, and Nikola Mirotic scored 30 points to lead New Orleans past Houston. Davis added three blocks and three steals, Mirotic was 6 of 8 from 3-point range, and Julius Randle had 25 points off the bench. Eric Gordon led the Rockets with 21 points off the bench, and P.J. Tucker and Chris Paul each added 19 points. James Harden had 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. BUCKS 113, HORNETS 112 CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 25 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists, and Milwaukee spoiled Charlotte’s celebration of 30 years of basketball. Antetokounmpo made two free throws with 23.7 seconds remaining to put the Bucks ahead after the Hornets battled back from a 20-point deficit behind 41 points from Kemba Walker. Walker missed a driving layup with 3.4 seconds left and the loose ball got kicked outside where Nic Batum misfired on a 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer.

(AP Photo/Eric Gay) Khris Middleton had 19 points and Eric Bledsoe added 17 as the Bucks. Walker was 15 of 29 from the field, hitting seven 3-pointers. PACERS 111, GRIZZLIES 83 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Bojan Bogdanovic scored 19 points and Victor Oladipo added 16 to help Indiana rout Memphis in the largest-opening night victory margin in the franchise’s NBA era. Domantas Sabonis finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds as Indiana earned its seventh opening-night win in eight years. The Pacers also have won eight of their last nine home openers. Marc Gasol scored 13 points for Memphis. RAPTORS 116, CAVALIERS 104 TORONTO (AP) — Kawhi Leonard had 24 points and 12 rebounds in his Toronto debut, Kyle Lowry scored 27 points and the Raptors beat Cleveland. Fred VanVleet scored 14 points, Pascal Siakam had 13 and Danny Green 11 to help the Raptors win their sixth straight season opener and give Nick Nurse a victory in his first game as head coach.

Kevin Love scored 21 points, and Cedi Osman had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers. PISTONS 103, NETS 100 DETROIT (AP) — Andre Drummond had 24 points and 20 rebounds, and Detroit won its opener under new coach Dwane Casey. Blake Griffin added 26 points for the Pistons, who were without two potential starters but still managed to hold off Brooklyn. Caris LeVert equalled a career high with 27 points for the Nets, and he drove to the basket in the final seconds with Brooklyn down one. LeVert lost the ball, and it went out of bounds to Detroit. Reggie Jackson made two free throws for the Pistons with 6.2 seconds remaining, and Joe Harris missed from near the top of the key at the other end. MAGIC 104, HEAT 101 ORLANDO, Florida (AP) — Rookie Mohamed Bamba dunked twice and blocked a shot during Orlando’s 9-0 run in the fourth quarter and the Magic held off Miami. Aaron Gordon had 26 points and 16 rebounds for

the Magic. They went without a field goal over the final 4 1/2 minutes. Goran Dragic led Miami with 26 points, and Josh Richardson had 21. JAZZ 123, KINGS 117 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Donovan Mitchell scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and Utah overcame an uneven performance on both ends of the floor to beat Sacramento in the season opener for both teams. Rudy Gobert had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Joe Ingles scored 22 and Derrick Favors added 18 points and nine boards as the Jazz won their sixth straight against the Kings. Utah trailed by 16 early in the first quarter, blew a 14-point lead in the third and then pulled away in the fourth. Seven players scored in double figures for Utah. Willie Cauley-Stein had 23 points and seven rebounds for Sacramento. De’Aaron Fox added 21 points and seven assists. Marvin Bagley III, the second overall pick in this year’s NBA draft, had six points and five rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench for the Kings.

SUNS 121, MAVERICKS 100 PHOENIX (AP) — Devin Booker scored 19 of his 35 points in the final 6:44 and lifted Phoenix over Dallas in the teams’ season opener. Booker, who missed the preseason after undergoing a surgical procedure on his right (shooting) hand, sank four 3s, converted a three-point play, made a driving layup and hit two free throws after Dallas had cut what had been a 16-point lead to four. Two of the NBA’s top rookies squared off in their debuts with different results. Deandre Ayton, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, made 8 of 11 shots for 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had six assists. Dallas’ Luka Doncic, the No. 3 overall pick, struggled from the field, making 5 of 16 shots — 0 of 5 3-pointers — for 10 points. He had four assists and eight rebounds. Trevor Ariza added 21 points, Josh Jackson 18 and T.J. Warren 17 for the Suns, who gave Igor Kokoskov a victory in his NBA head coaching debut. NUGGETS 107, CLIPPERS 98 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nikola Jokic scored 21 points, Gary Harris added 20 and the Nuggets opened the season with a victory. Denver led for most of the game but was trailing 92-84 with 5:14 remaining after the Clippers went on an 11-3 run that was highlighted by a pair of Boban Marjanovic 3-point plays. The Nuggets seized control with their own 11-2 spurt. Will Barton added 19 points and Paul Millsap 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Nuggets, who struggled on the road last year, going 15-26. Tobias Harris had 19 points and 10 rebounds while Boban Marjanovic added 18 points for the Clippers.
