The event will take place from 11am to 7pm on church grounds. There will be a children’s corner with a bouncing castle and face painting; a Sparks Children talent show, basketball games, a threepoint shootout contest, a marching band, and a kingdom-style fashion show. Women's Ministry called Women of Excellence. In a tribute to her work, BFMI has once again partnered with Women of Excellence to put on this Saturday’s special event. Proceeds will go to support the work of the Women of Excellence as well as BFMI’s youth and children’s ministries. President of the Women of Excellence, Nicole Andrews, said their ministry’s vision is to build a strong force of female leaders who will maximise their true potential through the discovery of their individual purpose and find their place within the body of Christ. “As a result of last year’s event we were able to support several women who had financial needs throughout the years. Moreover, we were able

to support a family with several children by meeting a special need,” she said. Pastor Sheena Pinder talked about the impact her older sister, the late Ruth Munroe, made over the decades at BFMI: “The Women’s Ministry was her heart and passion. She believed that no woman should stand alone while facing adversities in life.” Speaking about her hopes for this weekend’s fair, she said: “I pray that the love of God that is shared on these grounds will be seeds that will bring a bountiful harvest for the glory of God.” Tickets for the Ruth Munroe Family Food Fun Fest can be purchased at the Oasis Bookstore at BFMI or by calling 461-6400.

POPE'S BIG SYNOD ON CHURCH FUTURE PRODUCES FIRST DOCUMENT, BUT DIFFERENCES REMAIN OVER ROLE OF WOMEN – Francis blasts “macho and dictatorial attitudes”– By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press Pope Francis’ big meeting on the future of the Catholic Church headed into its final stretch Wednesday, with differences over the role of women still dividing the assembly even as it produced its first document after a month of debate. The Vatican released a letter from the 364member synod, or meeting, to rank-and-file faithful, updating them in general terms on where things stand in their deliberations. It was approved 336-12 by the voting members of the assembly, which for the first time has included 54 women voting alongside bishops. The letter said the church going forward must be committed to listening to everyone, especially the poor and marginalised and victims of abuse by clergy. The church, it said, must commit itself "concretely and structurally to ensuring that this does not happen again.” Francis called the meeting back in 2021 as part of his efforts to reform the church and make it more welcoming and responsive to the needs of the faithful today. During two years of preliminary consultations among Catholics around the world, there was a near-universal call for the church, which bars women from its highest ranks, to open up greater opportunities for women to take

on decision-making roles and have their voices heard. The whole process has generated tremendous hope for change among progressive Catholics and resistance from conservatives. In the letter released Wednesday, synod members made clear that those differences remain and will be outlined in more detail in a 40-page synthesis document that will be voted on Saturday night. “There are multiple challenges and numerous questions: The synthesis report of the first session will specify the points of agreement we have reached, highlight the open questions, and indicate how our work will proceed,” the letter said. Delegates will return to Rome in October of next year to continue the debate and present final proposals or conclusions to Francis. Women have long complained they are treated as second-class citizens in the church, barred from the priesthood and highest positions of power yet responsible for the lion’s share of church work. They have long demanded a greater say in church governance, at the very least with voting rights at Vatican synods but also the right to preach at Mass and be ordained as priests and deacons. While ordination of women priests is off the table, the question of women deacons was an

official agenda item for the meeting. Many delegates, male and female, have spoken out in favour of conferring onto women a ministry that existed in the early church, or at the very least acknowledging the crucial role women play. “I have become so convinced in these days that a synodal church must be willing to sit at the foot of women, especially lay women who are from the Global South, to learn how to renew the church’s imagination,” said Nora Kofognotera Nonterah, a Ghanian theologian participating in the meeting. In the letter released Wednesday, there was no mention specifically of women's roles. But in his remarks to the assembly Wednesday, Francis spoke at length about the feminine nature of the church and the crucial role women play in passing down the faith. And he blasted those in the male hierarchy who have abused their authority over them with their “macho and dictatorial attitudes.” Ridiculing young priests who shop for fancy cassocks and lace in ecclesiastical tailor shops in Rome, he denounced clericalism, or the placing of priests on a pedestal. “Clericalism is a whip, it is a scourge, it is a form of worldliness that defiles and damages” the church, Francis said.

What does the Bible say about homosexuality? By GERALD WEST Senior Professor of Biblical Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal (THE CONVERSATION) Earlier this year, Pope Francis was asked about his views on homosexuality. He reportedly replied: “This (laws around the world criminalising LGBTI people) is not right. Persons with homosexual tendencies are children of God. God loves them. God accompanies them … condemning a person like this is a sin. Criminalising people with homosexual tendencies is an injustice.” This isn’t the first time Pope Francis has shown himself to be a progressive leader when it comes to, among other things, gay Catholics. It’s a stance that has drawn the ire of some high-ranking bishops and ordinary Catholics, both on the African continent and elsewhere in the world. Some of these Catholics may argue that Pope Francis’s approach to LGBTI matters is a misinterpretation of Scripture (or the Bible). But is it? Scripture is particularly important for Christians. When church leaders refer to “the Bible” or “the Scriptures”, they usually mean “the Bible as we understand it through our theological doctrines”. The Bible is always interpreted by our churches through their particular theological lenses. As a biblical scholar, I would suggest that church leaders who use their cultures and theology to exclude homosexuals don’t read Scripture carefully. Instead, they allow their patriarchal fears to distort it, seeking to find in the Bible proof-texts that will support attitudes of exclusion. There are several instances in the Bible that underscore my point. Love of God and neighbour Mark’s Gospel, found in the New Testament, records that Jesus entered the Jerusalem temple on three occasions. First, he visited briefly, and “looked around at everything” (11:11). On the second visit he acted, driving “out those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of

those who were selling doves” (11:15). Jesus specifically targeted those who exploited the poorest of the people coming to the temple. On his third visit, Jesus spent considerable time in the temple itself (11:27-13:2). He met the full array of temple leadership, including chief priests, teachers of the law and elders. Each of these leadership sectors used their interpretation of Scripture to exclude rather than to include. The “ordinary people” (11:32 and 12:12) recognised that Jesus proclaimed a gospel of inclusion. They eagerly embraced him as he walked through the temple. In Mark 12:24, Jesus addresses the Sadducees, who were the traditional high priests of ancient Israel and played an important role in the temple. Among those who confronted Jesus, they represented the group that held to a conservative theological position and used their interpretation of the Scripture to exclude. Jesus said to them: Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God? Jesus recognised that they chose to interpret Scripture in a way that prevented it from being understood in non-traditional

ways. Thus, they limited God’s power to be different from traditional understandings of him. Jesus was saying God refused to be the exclusive property of the Sadducees. The ordinary people who followed Jesus understood that he represented a different understanding of God. This message of inclusion becomes even clearer when Jesus is later confronted by a single scribe (12:28). In answer to the scribe’s question on the most important laws, Jesus summarised the theological ethic of his gospel: love of God and love of neighbour (12:29-31). Inclusion, not exclusion Those who would exclude homosexuals from God’s kingdom choose to ignore Jesus, turning instead to the Old Testament – most particularly to Genesis 19, the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Their interpretation of the story is that it is about homosexuality. It isn’t. It relates to hospitality. The story begins in Genesis 18 when three visitors (God and two angels, appearing as “men”) came before Abraham, a Hebrew patriarch. What did Abraham and his wife Sarah do? They offered hospitality. The two angels then left Abraham and the Lord and travelled into Sodom (19:1) where they met Lot, Abraham’s nephew.

What did Lot do? He offered hospitality. The two incidents of hospitality are explained in exactly the same language. The “men of Sodom” (19:4), as the Bible describes them, didn’t offer the same hospitality to these angels in disguise. Instead, they sought to humiliate them (and Lot (19:9)) by threatening to rape them. We know they were heterosexual, because Lot, in attempting to protect himself and his guests, offered his virgin daughters to them (19:8). Heterosexual rape of men by men is a common act of humiliation. This is an extreme form of inhospitality. The story contrasts extreme hospitality (Abraham and Lot) with the extreme inhospitality of the men of Sodom. It is a story of inclusion, not exclusion. Abraham and Lot included the strangers; the men of Sodom excluded them. Clothed in Christ When confronted by the inclusive gospel of Jesus and a careful reading of the story of Sodom as one about hospitality, those who disavow Pope Francis’s approach will likely jump to other Scriptures. Why? Because they have a patriarchal agenda and are looking for any Scripture that might support their position. But the other Scriptures they use also require careful reading.

Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13, for example, are not about “homosexuality” as we now understand it – as the caring, loving and sexual relationship between people of the same sex. These texts are about relationships that cross boundaries of purity (between clean and unclean) and ethnicity (Israelite and Canaanite). In Galatians 3:28 in the New Testament, Paul the apostle yearns for a Christian community where: There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Paul built his theological argument on the Jew-Greek distinction, but then extended it to the slave-free distinction and the male-female distinction. Christians – no matter which church they belong to – should follow Paul and extend it to the heterosexual-homosexual distinction. We are all “clothed in Christ” (3:27): God only sees Christ, not our different sexualities. RELIGION

THE TRIBUNE

Following in the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi – CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL BLESSING OF ANIMALS – By CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL ST FRANCIS of Assisi is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment/ecology. His beginnings in the late 12th century were a far cry from the person he became after a year’s long imprisonment, and subsequent illness, which forced him to go into solitude and prayer. However, following his dedication to solitude and prayer, Francis came to learn God’s will for his life, and converted to an apostolic life. He experienced poverty while on pilgrimage in Rome, and during this time he mingled with beggars, begged alms, and gave alms to a leper. Through these and other experiences, Francis felt compelled to turn away from his worldliness, denounce his wealth, and commit to a life of simplicity. This angered his father, who brought Francis before the Bishop of Assisi. It was here that Francis formally denounced ties with his family. Francis’ zeal attracted followers, and in 1209, he composed a rule of life from the teachings of the Bible, which would eventually go on to form the Franciscan order. In his simple living, Francis considered all nature as the mirror of God and all creatures as his kindred. Francis died on October 3, 1226 in Assisi, and his feast day is celebrated on October 4. Because of his love for nature and a rule of simple

living, Francis’ feast day is often accompanied with a celebration of ecology and/or animals. St Francis of Assisi had a deep love and reverence for all creatures, big and small. He saw the divine presence in every living being and believed that animals were our companions, and brothers and sisters in creation. St. Francis’ teachings on compassion, kindness, and stewardship towards animals continue to inspire and guide us today. This year, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi occurred on a Wednesday, and the third annual service of the Blessing of Animals took place at Christ Church Cathedral on the following Sunday, at 5pm, in the Dean Patrick Adderley Parish Hall. This year, representatives from the Royal Bahamas Police and Defence Forces with the K-9 Unit from the Immigration Department were present in order to receive a blessing for their animals. Advocacy for the stewardship initiatives is not the sole interest of scientists, but should also be the interest of Christians. The environment is our initial sacred space, where humankind first encountered God in the Garden of Eden. Some of God’s memorable miracles in biblical history occurred with nature, such as parting the Red Sea, providing water from the rock, and when Jesus calms the storm. Therefore, we cannot understand and feel God’s presence without

CHURCH members and representatives from the Royal Bahamas Police, the Defence Forces and the Immigration Department receive a blessing for their animals. considering the presence of God in the natural world – a manifestation of God’s power, love and concern for humankind. We cannot also consider the natural world without considering animals as well. Animals have been special in God’s sight. From as early as Genesis 1-2 where God creates all living things. The blessing of the animals is a way for us to honor St Francis’ legacy and celebrate the bond

between humans and animals. It is a reminder that all creatures, whether domestic or wild, have a place in this world and deserve our respect and care. Animals have been a source of companionship and even therapeutic healing for people for centuries. In a world where animals often face neglect, cruelty, and exploitation, the Blessing of Animals is a powerful symbol of hope and compassion. It is a reminder that we have the ability and the

duty to be kind and gentle towards all creatures, just as St Francis taught us. Christ Church Cathedral offers this service yearly, as a reminder of the role of the Church in stewardship for the earth; it is our sacred space and just as important as the edifice. The service is a reminder also of the beauty and intuitiveness of God as He has placed among us animals, plants and a natural environment that gives us a glimpse into His magnificence. So, let us embrace

this beautiful tradition and take a moment to reflect on the significance and importance of the Blessing of Animals on the Feast of St Francis. Let us strive to be better stewards of the earth and to treat all animals with kindness, respect, and love. May the blessing of St Francis be upon all creatures, and may we continue to honour his teachings by living in harmony with the animals and the natural world.
