$250M HOTEL PLAN TO BE ‘PHOENIX’ FOR GB By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
A $250M investment that will bring one of the world’s top luxury resort brands to Grand Bahama was yesterday hailed as “the catalyst” that will drive the island’s “phoenix from the ashes” rebirth. Rupert Hayward, grandson of former Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) co-chair Sir Jack Hayward, said the multiparty deal to develop a Six
Senses resort at the 30-acre Barbary Beach site previously owned by Marriott will “raise many, many eyebrows around the world and put Grand Bahama on the map” for high-end tourism. He voiced confidence the agreement featuring Weller Development and Pegasus Capital Advisors will “change the narrative on Grand Bahama” and restore its reputation as a location that attracts highquality investments by both foreigners and Bahamians. BAHAMIAN doctors yesterday urged the Government to “hit the pause button” over its proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) reforms, warning they “cannot support the Bill” tabled in the House of Assembly as is. The Medical Association of
the Bahamas (MAB), which represents private physicians throughout The Bahamas, told Tribune Business in a statement it was “distressing” that the Davis administration had proceeded to table the NHI Bill for its first parliamentary reading without giving those impacted a chance to provide full feedback and advice. FOOD retailers were last night hoping the government will agree to an “expanded list” of pricecontrolled products before the weekend so Bahamian consumers can enjoy cost of living “relief” come Monday. John Bostwick, attorney for the Retail Grocers Association, told Tribune Business the industry had submitted a revised list to the Davis administration containing more items than the 20 offered in its October 26, 2022, position paper. Declining to identify the products involved, or how many, he confirmed the association and its members are “before the weekend” seeking to reach a “compromise” with the government similar to that unveiled yesterday by their pharmaceutical counterparts.
