Bishop hails ‘important achievement’ of Independence in Christmas message

THE president of the Bahamas Christian Council, Bishop Delton Fernander, has looked towards the 50th anniversary of Independence in his Christmas message, calling it an “important achievement”.

He said in his message: “Once again we have the privilege of celebrating another Christmas season. This year, more than most, we should be grateful to God for preserving our lives to see the end of the COVID-19 global pandemic and a full return to normalcy. We can now freely gather and commemorate the birth of our Saviour in a way that we were not able to last year or the year before.

“As we do gather and return to carrying out the traditions of the season, we cannot forget where God has brought us from. We cannot and should not forget that there are still people in our country in need of help and a resurgence of hope. The real reason for the season must take precedence over materialistic endeavors. Acknowledging the principles set forth in the Bible, it is understood that the ability to give signifies the presence of abundance or overflow. In the book of Luke 6:38,

Jesus said, ‘give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you’. As you contemplate your giving this year, please remember those that are challenged this Christmas.

“As this year draws to a close and a new one ushered in, we find ourselves firmly on the road towards 50 years of independence as a nation. This is an important achievement as we witness war and strife in countries around the world, even in our close neighborhoods. In my view, this should be a time of collective reflection on how far we have come, what we have achieved and what is still yet to be accomplished. We must set our compass toward a prosperous future built strongly on reverence for God, Bahamian ingenuity and a commitment to excellence.

“We have endured a lot in recent years. In our times of trouble not only was our faith tested but God showed himself to be our ever loving Father. For some of us He has been a provider, for others a healer and for yet more of us, He has granted us peace of mind. We cannot take for granted the fact that we are alive especially in a time when so many of our loved ones and friends are no longer with us. Our living means that our life’s purpose is yet to be fulfilled. In this case, we should all find our place where we can not only carry the message of Christ but make a difference in our country. We cannot continue to sit on the sidelines while the contribution of others dictate the trajectory of our country. As Bahamians we must once again take that reigns and that means that we must be prepared to work together for the common and greater good of us all.

“The necessity of isolation and separation during the pandemic changed the way some of us worship. Hebrews 10:25 states, ‘not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much

the more as you see the Day approaching’. It is time to return to church if you have not already. The work of the Kingdom needs as many hands as possible to ensure that as many souls as possible are saved and as many people as possible to helped.

“It is my hope that we do not squander the potential of this new year by making empty resolutions for ourselves. As Christians, we should recommit ourselves to boldly carrying the banner of Christ wherever we go remembering that we are called to be the salt of the earth. As Bahamians, we must all commit to doing our part, big or small, in making The Bahamas a better place.

“On behalf of the Bahamas Christian Council, the wider Christian community, myself and my family, I wish every Bahamian and those living within our shores a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Please find the time to visit the church of your choice.

“May God continue to bless you and may God bless the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.”

An explosion of gospel music

Aworship experience like no other sums up last Sunday’s concert featuring headliner, international gospel star Todd Dulaney.

Attendees were treated to an explosion of gospel music that took them to a higher level of worship.

Bahamians of all denominations came out in droves for the special free concert featuring the recording gospel star and other local acts.

The artist brought his unique brand of praise and worship to Baha Mar grand ballroom. Local performers also raised the roof with their own performances hitting all the right notes and keys. They included Shaback, Tabernacle Choir and 3P Mime who ministered in dance.

During his performance, the “Victory Belongs to Jesus” singer expressed his gratitude to come to the islands and minister to people.

His performance was energetic from start to finish. The singer was also gracious enough to allow a cadre of Bahamian singers join him on stage along with his band. Together they offered a heartwarming medley that moved attendees, some to tears and some to shouts of praise.

Another unique and aweinspiring moment came when Dulaney allowed Bahamian gospel artist Colyn Kristopher share the stage with him to perform “King of Glory”. For nearly ten minutes, Colyn belted the lyrics to Dulaney’s hit song while the gospel star himself offered background vocals.

Later, Colyn shared with Facebook followers how the moment was certainly one that will live with him for a lifetime;

he got to share the stage with one of his gospel heroes. He shared to his Facebook page: “God is always faithful. I especially wanna point out how faithful He has been this year. To celebrate my birthday in September, I wanted to be a part of a showcase that Todd Dulaney was having in Chicago.

I just wanted to be in the room and have that experience, and my manager @gandhipinder and mentor @sherwingardnermusic jumped on board, they dedicated time, prepared and supported me through the entire process. Long story short, I was able to finally met one of my Heros in praise worship and that brought so much joy to be able to meet and perform for him. Fast forward 12.18.2022 will be a night I will always remember.

The night where I got to minister with one of my heros! @ todddulaney1 you have been a blessing to me over the years and you still are. I look forward to what God has in store for us in 2023. Blessings to you brother.”

The event was held as part of last week’s Don’t Blink Home Run Derby in Paradise baseball event. The event featured The Cancer Treatment Centers of America Celebrity softball game, Atlantis Paradise Harbour, a kid's camp, an official welcome party.

The main event took place last Saturday with the HomeRun Derby’s return to the Montagu foreshore.

The event is the brainchild of pro Bahamian baseball players Lucius Fox and Todd Isaacs Jr.

A new initiative to the week of festivities was the Prayer to Praise event, featuring the former minor league prospect turned gospel singer.

Dulaney spent most of his life pursuing a baseball career, playing 5 years of professional baseball. Now, his joy comes from serving the Lord in any and every capacity of life. He is steadfast and sold out to God and his eyes are focused on ministry and fulfilling His purpose. Todd’s dream is to write music, which ministers to the heart of God and touches the

heart of man. Not what’s hot, but what delivers, what heals, what restores, music that God inhabits.

Born December 20, 1983 in Maywood, IL, Dulaney grew up as a singer and an elite athlete. After graduating from high school in 2001, Dulaney was drafted from Community College in Mt. Carmel, IL, by the New York Mets to pursue a professional baseball career. While refining his athletic skills, Dulaney realized that there was a higher calling upon his life. He accepted an invitation to travel and perform background vocals for gospel artist and Grammy winner Smokie Norful.

Todd has worked and shared the stage with many awardwinning artists, including Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Jessica Reedy, Maurette Brown-Clark, Michelle Williams, Donnie McClurkin, Fred Hammond, Dr Bobby Jones, Ernest Pugh, TRIN-I-TEE 5:7, Nicole and David Binion, Tye Tribett and Donnie McClurkin just to name a few.

Ebenezer’s Exuma giveaway

UNDER the theme, “put a smile on a child’s face”, Ebenezer church in Farmer’s Hill, Exuma, joined hands with Peace and Plenty hotel along with other second home owners and businesses for their Christmas Giveaway event. It was a time of gift giving and much festivities. One could have felt the Christmas as the gifts were lined up for children aged up to 17. The

boys and girls enjoyed the bouncing castle, the ping pong table, the giant Connect 4 game, as well as throwing basketball hoops. There was a variety of food selection including hot dogs, pizza, cotton candy, popcorn and snow corn.

Deacon Urban Smith, of Ebenezer, along with general manager Patrick Faas of Peace & Plenty engaged the children in a pep talk and encouraged them to sing Christmas

songs and to always be mannerly and obedient to their parents. They reminded the young ones that Jesus is the reason for the season. Mr Faas and his team were delighted to participate.

Other sponsors included Ooley Lejuene, Derel Apfel, E10 Construction, Bob & Gina Ciconte, Shane & Lisa Corbitt, Elias Gonzalez, David Plum, Exuma Building Supplies and Ridgeland Law Chambers.

Archbishop looks towards 'horizon of hope'

Archbishop Patrick Pinder hailed the "horizon of hope" that must guide our lives in his Christmas message.

He said: "Once again we come to celebrate the Feast and Season of Christmas. This is a very special time of year. It is a time when we have festive gatherings with family and friends. This is a time when we pause to hear the message of hope and happiness which is the essence of the Christmas Story. That message as preserved for us in the Gospel of Luke is proclaimed at Midnight Mass. This is what it says: 'Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.'

(Luke 2:14)

"In grasping the meaning and significance of this message, we reach back in time to the Prophet Isaiah. He assures us that: 'The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone'. (Isaiah 9:1)

"This is certainly a message of hope. There is nothing more inviting than a ray of light when we are lost in darkness. There are few things more desirable than a source of brightness to offset our gloom.

"We certainly had our share of gloom over the past few years with a persistent pandemic weighing down upon us. Even now as the situation begins to ease a bit, one hears talk of a 'tripledemic'.

"The gloom which visits our lives from time to time can be unkind to hope. The darkness we may experience can have so many points of origin. It could be a global pandemic. It may be the sudden and unexpected bad news about the health of a relative or friend or about

our own health. A family tragedy can shroud us in darkness. Failure in business or career can cast a shadow of gloom over us, so too can rejection and betrayal in relationships. This Christmas, we cannot forget the pall of darkness cast over our community by the unacceptably high number of murders this year.

"Surely darkness can overshadow us in many ways, shapes and forms. Whatever the nature of the darkness and gloom which might overshadow us however, the words of the Prophet Isaiah are intended for us. 'The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom, a light has shone'.

"A glimmer of that light is felt in the fact that we were spared the destructive force of hurricanes this year even though we had a close call.

"The words of the prophet Isaiah are echoed with a greater fullness in the Gospel where it says:

'Today in the city of David a saviour has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.'

(Luke 2:11)

"This is the message of Christmas. To elaborate it even further, we find these words in the Letter to Titus. '... the grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly and devoutly in this age ... eager to do what is good.'

(Titus 2:11-14)

This joyful and hopeful message is the story of Emmanuel, God's presence in our midst.

We are told this: "Let us put it very simply: Humanity needs God, otherwise we remains without hope."

"This horizon of hope must not just be an idea it must be a guiding motivation in our lives. The Christmas Story is a story about a family, the Holy Family. So we do not merely think of family at this time of the year. Rather, we commit ourselves to good, strong, healthy family life. After all, healthy family life is the basis of a healthy society. Indeed: 'In a healthy family life we experience some of the fundamental elements of peace: justice and love between brothers and sisters; the role of authority expressed by parents; loving concern for the members who are weaker because of youth, sickness or old age; mutual help in the necessities of life, readiness to accept others and, if necessary to forgive them.'

"'Glory to God in the highest' is the song of the angels at the first Christmas and in our worship we sing that great song of praise throughout the year. Surely this is a reminder that the spirit of hope and joy and generosity which we associate with Christmas should remain with us all year round.

"Let us keep before us the reality that Christmas is not just a commercial or secular event. It is primarily a religious celebration. It is a celebration of God sharing our world, our condition, our human nature and giving us all a dignity beyond measure. In Christmas, the infinite has come to us in the form of an infant. This causes us to look at everyone and respect their dignity."

He added: "So, let us celebrate Christmas for the duration of the Liturgical Season. Christmas does not end with Boxing Day. The Christmas Season ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. That will be January 9 this time around. Feel free to keep your Christmas decorations up until then.

"The work of Christmas must happen all year long. In essence

that means doing all that we can to build our families, our communities and our nation into places of caring, compassion, concern and commitment for the wellbeing of all.

"May the favor of God come to rest upon each of us this Christmas Day and remain with us always. Merry Christmas!"

CHURCH ON CHRISTMAS SUNDAY…WHY

THE HOLIDAY cheer and joy that surrounds the Christmas holiday season, for many, is full of love, laughter and family.

In many households it is tradition to attend a Christmas Day church service after opening up the gifts, mixing and mingling. Tribune Religion spoke to a number of Bahamians whom shared their thoughts.

“Who doesn’t love attending church on Christmas Day with family. It is the feeling. I mean, even the King and Queen, and members of the Royal Family will attend the morning service at the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham, on Christmas Day. It is just something about having your entire family with you all weekend, and culminating it all with a great worship from God,” said Rika Deal.

Ava Bethell added: “Well we know Christmas doesn’t always fall on Sundays, but this year it does. As a Catholic, whichever day Christmas falls, we usually have a service so I’ll speak to that. I remember growing up, no matter how tired we were from staying up all night and waking up early to open gifts - our parents made sure we got ready in time to attend church. I love new things so wearing my new Christmas dress to church was always something I loved doing.”

She went on to say she remembers dressing alike

with her sister in beautiful gowns to match the season.

“There are so many great memories tied to my childhood Christmas, and church. And for some reason the church is extra filled with visitors and people that are home for the holidays. The carols are sung at an all time high and the worship is always on point. After praising the good Lord, we are headed home for more family time and fun. But I love that it starts in the house of the Lord,” said Ava.

For Caroline Forbes, the importance of attending church on Christmas Day is the same as attending every Sunday, for worship.

“To celebrate life in the way that is fulfilling and thankful. But I would say, around Christmas time is always a good time and feeling because you reflect on the year that has passed, you made it nearly at the end and by your side you have your family and friends you love. That is the greatest gift, life. The only person I see fitting to give thanks for this life and all that we have is God himself. So it is only right we serve him during this time of the year and all year around,” said Caroline.
