Q: Wine, Kalik, rum or cocktail?

Fruit punch is the order of day. Love the delightful blend of fruits, from the pineapples to the cherries, strawberries and all that good stuff.

Q: Beach or sofa?

I love the water, the depth of the ocean and the smell of salt.

Q: What could you not do without?

I could not do without chocolate. When you feel stressed you eat chocolate. I love my husband, but I love chocolate, and he’s chocolate to me.

Q: Weekend away: where would you go?

I love the tranquillity of Harbour Island, Eleuthera, the colonial style and the beaches.

saw revolved around crime and conflict resolution among young men, improving literacy by teaching young people how to read and providing them with books, as well as helping improve living and health conditions, water sanitation and community service. In July, Mr Stubbs will hand over the reins to a new district governor during the district banquet which will be held at Atlantis here in Nassau. As his time winds down, he admits to feeling both sad and relieved. “Well, I will be glad that the stress of travel will be over, but I will be sad to say goodbye to the many friends I have made over the past few months. It really doesn’t matter where you go, all Rotarians greet you and treat you in the same manner. They are excellent hosts. The people that we have met on this journey will be our friends for life; they genuinely care. They are excellent hosts and they really do treat you like celebrities,” Mr Stubbs said. “And the food, I think I must have gained 25 pounds,” Mrs Stubbs added. “I think that it’s also sad because you

“When we had the opening of the well (in Haiti) I got the first glass of this clean, clear water and they didn’t know what it was because they were not used to seeing clear water, and no one would touch it until finally this little boy came up and took the first sip and everyone starting clapping and dancing.” see that there is still so much which needs to be done that won’t get done during your time, because the first half of it is really you learning as you go. “It has been a wonderful experience. We got to see parts of the countries that you would not see as a tourist and you got to meet the heads of states as well as the poorest of people; from one end of the spectrum to the other.”

And they said that they will also miss the beauty of the countries that they got to experience. “During our time away Carla must have taken over 7,000 photographs, and most of them were when we were in Haiti. In Haiti you can go from abject poverty to pure opulence. In Jamaica there was just the different topography, and the natural pools in Virgin Gorda in

the British Virgin Islands, which are called the eighth wonder of the world – so much beauty,” Mr Stubbs said. But most importantly, he is proud of the good Rotary has achieved. He told Tribune Weekend about one of his most moving experiences: “In Haiti we had the opportunity to travel to a village to open a well that would provide clean water to the village. As we drove to the village we passed this brown river. It was the water where the children bathed and played and their mothers did the washing, and the same water in which had dead carcasses (floated), the villagers would also use to cook and clean with. The same river where one year before further up the river 200 persons had died from cholera. And when we had the opening of the well I got the first glass of this clean, clear water and they didn’t know what it was because they were not used to seeing clear water, and no one would touch it until finally this little boy came up and took the first sip and everyone starting clapping and dancing.”

The joy of learning Pre-schools celebrate annual parade week CHILDREN all over the Bahamas have been celebrating the annual Young Child Parade week (or pre-school week), taking part in fun activities, parades, reading exercises and enjoying games with teachers and parents. The pupils at Willard Patton PreSchool on Augusta Street, Nassau, were certainly joining in the mood as these images show. The annual week is a Ministry of Education, Science and Technology initiative which focuses on the growth, development and education of students. The parade allows students to showcase various educational themes taught in the classroom. It means that when students enter first grade, they will have been taught all the basic skills necessary to grow and learn all they can in healthy educational environments.

hat better way to enjoy a hot, sunny day than with a refreshing, ice cold cocktail that looks just as fabulous as it tastes. This week, Tribune Weekend stopped by the Green Parrot Bar & Grill on East Bay Street where Shandira Morley whipped up a quartet of fantastic colourful drinks sure to put some sparkle into your summer weekends. Two of the drinks were rainbow cocktails which are specially created drinks that allow the liquid ingredients to sit on top of each other rather than blending into one another, which then creates a layered effect in the glass. It is created by placing the heavier liquids on the bottom

and pouring all of the ingredients into the glass very slowly. The two rainbow drinks Shandira prepared were the “Jolly Rancher”, which includes melon liqueur, Apple Pucker, gin, vodka, Peach schnapps, sweet and sour liqueur, and orange and pineapple juice. The “Sex in the Backyard” rainbow drink is one of the restaurant’s most popular signature drinks and its ingredients are a well-kept secret, Shandira explained. “I can’t tell you what’s in it exactly, but it has a lot of different flavoured rum with a Caribbean twist,” she said. The other two drinks she prepared were fun tropical alcoholic beverages to enjoy during the hotter season, the mixologist added. One is the Apple Martini, which includes ingredients like Apple Pucker, sweet and sour liquor and Bacardi light rum. The final creation was the Jose Cuervo mixed drink which includes triple sec, sweet and sour liqueur, blended over crushed ice and served soft. So grab a friend, get your favourite cocktail and say cheers to the weekend.

A stylish love of travel

Bahamian designer launches luxury handbag line

A

young Bahamian designer is expressing her love for fashion and travel in a unique way – with the launch of a line of luxury handbags for both women and men. Grand Bahama native Anya Willique Pratt debuted her collection in London, England, earlier this month with a special event which attracted top industry experts, fellow fashion designers, international buyers, models, as well as fashion bloggers. Anya’s handbag line is called “Wanderlust” and is part of the her label, which is simply named Willique. “The aim of Williqueis to empower both men and women...allowing them to see and create themselves in a unique handcrafted piece. Williquehandbags embody everything that is personal

style with the best quality, giving you a one-of-a-kind masterpiece,” Anya said. “You can see yourself in one of our pieces merely because it was tailored for you. Create your memories, your style and personality with a Willique.” The first collection was inspired by Anya’s travels, but mainly by a trip back home after three years away from the Bahamas, thus the name “Wanderlust”. Wanderlust is a strong desire to travel and is the focal point of the Willique 2016 collection, which aims to represent the hustle and bustle of marketplaces around the world. “A market in every country is the hub of life and mixture of different forms of beauty. With the ‘Wanderlust’ collection this is brought to life by a hand-painted market scene or fruit basket on the bespoke handbag,” Anya said. Each bag is named after a place the designer has visited and gained inspiration from. For example, the “The Turks”, “The Cuban” and “The Bahamian” bags focus on the markets, colours and structures found in those locations.

It was during her first semester at university in London that Anya, inspired by the sights and sounds of her new home, decided to start an online shopping and travel boutique called Under50fashionbags. “This then grew into a passion and curiosity for creating my own handbag line,” she said. Soon, family and friends became

interested in her venture, and Anya said she saw in them a desire to possess a custom-made handbag. “Women have a taste for custommade handbags that show their personality, uniqueness and hobbies, for example the love for travel. The bags that I design are bespoke for a reason; it took me a while to find my personal style, and with Willique we want to cater to those seeking to stand out. We call it making the impractical practical,” she said. Anya finished her business degree last May at the University of Wales. She also took a second course in fashion. “These two go hand-in-hand, believe it or not,” she said. “After finishing school I came home to Freeport and just relaxed after three years of hard work. Here, I made up my mind to take the leap of faith (and) started my own line.” The core “Wanderlust” collection is available now in the Willique online store and in specific boutiques at the end of May. Three pieces will be added to the collection at a later date.

Karin says: “Eh, I’m not a fan of this look, but she seems to be enjoying it. And when you’re that age you should be allowed to have some fun with fashion. The skirt by itself is nice and really flatters her, and I like her hair styled like this.” Cara says: “It seems that the skirt crop top look will remain with us for a while. I’m a bit tired of it. This ensemble is cute, fresh and young, but its something that we have seen time and time again so it’s hard to get excited about it.”

Karin says: “Simple, yet lovely. It’s a great subtly sexy dress that shows off her svelte figure. She could have maybe added some accessories, but her jewellery, and her especially the dark plum lipstick, kind of make enough of a statement. Also, love the hair.” Cara says: “It’s simple yet so effective. I am loving this white gown and the curls; she looks great. I have to say that the nose ring is a bit distracting, a bit like a bejewelled booger, but to each their own I suppose.”

Karin says: “Sophie’s going with the Greek goddess look, and it works for her, especially with her height (I believe she’s 5’9). The wine-coloured gown is undoubtedly gorgeous, and complements her complexion and red hair. I particularly love how it’s draped. However, I’m not 100 per cent sold on the coiled braids.” Cara says: “I really like everything about her look, except that god-awful choker. I really think there needs to be a jewellery graveyard where chokers like that can go to die. But the dress and the braids are lovely.”

Karin says: “Lena always has her own alternative style, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. This is kinda tame for her and it’s a disappointment. The cut is not bad at all, it’s the terrible feather print that makes this look like she’s wearing her Aunt Betty’s robe.” Cara says: “Well, this is a bit of a snooze fest. It’s so ill-fitting and the print looks like grandma’s house coat. She has such a nice figure, she could totally rock something that was more form fitting and flattering. She also could have spiced up the outfit with better accessories.”

Karin says: “This is just a weird length on her, yet her stylists insist on dressing her like this again and again. It makes her look stumpy. Otherwise it’s a cute dress, nothing spectacular, but cute. I also wish they would let her wear her hair differently.” Cara says: “A floral take on the little black dress. I really like the big, bold print and how it looks like the flowers are just jumping out at you. What I don’t like is the midcalf length hemline combined with the ankle straps which just seem to cut off her legs.”

Home World by Bonnie Milani

S

By STEPHEN HUNT tep back 20 years and science fiction soared high, offering worlds brim-full of possibility and invention, thanks to creators such as Poul Anderson and Harry Harrison. The opening of Bonnie Milani’s “Home World” propelled me back to those days. It oozed style, showing a world where technology transforms the everyday experience of the future citizens of Earth. Class systems remain intact in this future - with the central character of

Jezekiah being the future heir of the title of Protector of Home World. Earth itself has transformed in many ways, though, to the point where natural humans are the stuff of legend, most people being sorted into different Types from a scattering of cultures. If the setting tips its hat towards the likes of Anderson, the plot is far more Machiavellian. Jezekiah is caught in the middle of a series of political shell games, as he tries to secure a treaty that will bring peace and stability to Home World. The heart of this deal is a marriage contract between his sister, the whining, selfish Letticia, whose days are spent burrowing into the cyber world of the Sync, and the human hybrid Strongarm, an honourable, lion-like Lupan warrior who, once bonded, bonds for life. Woven into the tale are other characters, most notably Keiko, the would-be Samurai with an ancestry that binds her to the underworld of Earth, with whom Jezekiah finds himself falling in love. The action that surrounds the politics can be brutal - this is a tale for adults, with strong language and horrifying actions on the parts of some of the protagonists. Those who find Game of Thrones too much at times should note that similar ground is trodden here. Also, while noting

things that may put people off, there are one or two small editing errors to be found, the occasional an instead of a, for example - but really very minor problems only worth mentioning for the most stringent of eyes. In the midst of all of this, there’s some very clever writing going on. In particular, I was taken with the attention to language. The future world has assimilated all manner of dialects, and a pidgin English is spoken at times between those of separate cultures. This can make for awkward reading at times, but in a good way, because while you puzzle out what this form of broken speech or that idiolect involves, you are immersing yourself in this future landscape, the imperfections crystallising the world around you. Beyond that, Milani also pays attention

to non-verbal communication, with various characters having different means of observing the world around them. Keiko has her battle sense that alerts her to threats in her vicinity, Letticia is immersed in the Netmind of Sync with access to the myriad of options that cyberpunk-influenced world provides, the splendidly-named bodyguard Rudyard Kipling Marsden - Kip for short - is able to observe the moods of others around him through his heightened technology, while Jezekiah himself is often noted to be attuning the mood that he broadcasts as being different from that he feels inside. Meanwhile, the feral ancestry of Strongarm equips him with the ability to sniff out what others are feeling. Communication is key in this future world - more crucially, limiting your communication to avoid broadcasting one’s real intentions is a matter of life and death in the world of political games that mark out the life - and possible death - of “Home World”. It’s a cracking read, and while I might not be totally convinced by the authenticity of some of the romantic connections in the book, that’s fully believable in a world where politics, including marriage for advancement, are par for the course. Rating: 4.5/5 rounded to 5

‘Hamilton’ the musical is now ‘Hamilton’ the best-seller

H

amilton” isn’t just a hit on Broadway. It’s a hit in print, too. A hardcover edition of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s celebrated musical about Alexander Hamilton was published Tuesday and topped Amazon.com’s best-seller list. It features the libretto and photographs and accounts of the show’s creation. “Hamilton: The Revolution” is out of stock on Amazon, with an expected wait of nine to 12 days for a copy. It was No. 2 on Barnes & Noble’s website. Grand Central Publishing spokesman Jimmy Franco says “Hamilton: The Revolution” already is going into its third printing, for a planned total of 210,000 copies. The book that inspired the stage production is Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of the founding father. It was No. 22 on Amazon.com on Tuesday. The show’s hip-hop soundtrack also has been a best-seller. relationships

Anticipating needs and compromising BY DR EDRICA RICHARDSON

T

HE purpose of being together is having someone to anticipate your needs and compromise. Have you ever had this happen, you are running very late getting home from work and remember you forgot to take something out to cook, and after the day you’ve just had you’re too tired to stop for anything. So you head home with a sense of dread about preparing dinner (and cleaning up from the rushed morning breakfast). You walk in the door and notice the great smells wafting in from the kitchen. You walk into a clean kitchen and your partner is there to greet you with a hug and a kiss. Your partner tells you to take your time and change into comfortable clothes. Dinner will be ready soon and you can just relax and they will take care of everything. If this has never happened to you (or something similar to this), you may not have experienced the joy of someone loving you enough to anticipate what you want and need and providing it for you. When both partners in are relationship are doing this for one another there is a tremendous boost of energy and vitality that both have the opportunity to share. Knowing that your partner is thinking about you and what makes you happy is an assurance that you are totally loved and treasured. Anticipating and meeting your partner’s needs is good for both of you. Reaching this goal requires good communication built upon a foundation of trust and mutual respect. Building such a foundation is possible in every relationship if both people are willing to examine themselves and their positive and negative contributions toward one another. Loving one another by anticipating and meeting each other’s needs leads to a profound and enduring connection that will sustain a couple through many challenges in their lives together. If you are sceptical about this scenario, or if you are stuck in an “exchange system” type of relationship in which each partner is careful to make sure they get their own needs met before meeting the needs of the other, you’re still stuck in selfish single behaviour. You should examine the benefits

Relationships are about compromise, which sometimes means taking part in activities you normally wouldn’t be interested in

“Loving one another by anticipating and meeting each other’s needs leads to a profound and enduring connection that will sustain a couple through many challenges in their lives together.”

of evolving your relationship into one in which each partner works toward the best interest of the other. Relationships are built on compromise, you can’t have one person who always wants to be in control of what is done, how it’s done and when it’s done. The need for reciprocal love is how a relationship functions, and how you learn how to fulfil each other’s needs. So no more “I do what I want”, that’s only for single people not interested in a partnership. Let’s figure out how to balance both our needs so the relationship can grow and last. Someone once told me we do what we want for the other person because that’s how you show your love. So maybe that means eating at a restaurant you weren’t interested in, spending time with them despite a busy schedule; just show them you love them. So do what you want for the success of you as a couple. There is nothing like the power exchange of a king and queen; watch them build a nation!

EV is gearing up for the highly-anticipated sixth season premiere of Game of Thrones by giving an HBO subscriber and a friend the chance to experience the world of Westeros up close and in person. Through the Game of Thrones promotion, REV and HBO will give one lucky fan a trip for two to Ireland to tour the principle locations featured in the Emmy-award winning series. Game of Thrones is filmed against a backdrop of stunning sets and landscapes - most of which are remote and hard to find. Lucky winners of the Game of Thrones promotion will not only gain access to these locations, but will have the opportunity to trek deep into the forests, along the wild sea cliffs, across the rocky beaches, and into the caves and medieval ruins where many of the series’ most memorable moments occurred. Subscribers that sign up for HBO from now until July 19 will be entered in a weekly drawing for a chance to win exclusive REV and Game of Thrones gift packs. During this promotional period, all HBO subscribers will be entered for a chance to win the grand prize, which includes complimentary round-trip airfare from Nassau to Ireland. “Teaming up with HBO for such an exciting promotion enables us to broaden our partnership, as well as the product and experiences we deliver to our valued customers,” said REV Marketing Department Product Coordinator M’Khel Hanna-Ferguson. “Game of Thrones is a global phenomenon that has garnered tremendous support right here in the Bahamas. We’re looking forward to making some lucky subscribers very happy over the next few months through this promotion.” Game of Thrones makes its return on Sunday, April 24 at 9pm. The sixth season, which features 10 all-new episodes, is said to be the biggest and best of the show’s run, with the premiere episode promising to deliver a major surprise in its last

The first episode is called “The Red Woman”, and according to HBO it immediately follows the shocking developments at the conclusion of season five, including Jon Snow’s bloody fate at the hands of Castle Black mutineers, Daenerys’ near-demise at the fighting pits of Meereen, and Cersei’s public humiliation in the streets of King’s Landing. The survivors from all parts of Westeros and Essos will regroup to press forward, inexorably, towards their uncertain individual fates. Familiar faces will forge new alliances to bolster their strategic chances at survival, while new characters will emerge to challenge the balance of power in the east, west, north and south. HBO subscribers wanting to catch up on the action or relive their favourite moments before the premiere can get full access to the entire Game of Thrones catalogue on HBO On Demand at no additional cost via REV On Demand, channel 500.

erhaps because of Grand Bahama’s proximity to Florida as well as its thriving commercial free port, as well as its recent growth (since the 1960s), Freeport has less of a history and variety of mailboats than some of its sister islands in the northern Bahamas. It is nevertheless a rich tale. The Church Bay was launched as a Royal Navy minesweeper, HMS MMS 194, at Symonette Shipyards in Nassau and Hog Island on November 12, 1942. Craig Symonette confirms the vessel was built in the third slip or “ways” and that Jenkins Roberts was the overseer. Having never entered military service she was instead put to commercial use serving Freeport as well as Cat Island. By 1952 she was owned by the Three Bays Corporation and when she burned at the dockside in 1973 was rumoured to have been owned by Oscar Johnson, MP for Cat Island, who denied ownership. The tug Mako II rammed and sank the burning hulk in Nassau Harbour. The Lady Eula, owned by Captain Ernest Dean of Sandy Point, Abaco,

CAPTAIN ERIC WIBERG is a marine and naval historian, author and a maritime lawyer who grew up in Nassau in the 1970s and 1980s and is a regular visitor to The Bahamas. In 2009 Capt Wiberg began the first of three books on U-Boats in the Bahamas and Bermuda and in 2012 began a blog focusing on mailboats and their contribution to Bahamian history. He is the author of ‘Tanker Disasters’, ‘Round the World in the Wrong Season’ and ‘U-Boats in the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos’ and is working on a book about mailboats in the Bahamas. He is writing a series in The Tribune on the glorious history of mailboats, their place in island life, the characters that define them, the variety of craft, the dozens of islands they serve, the mailboat ‘dynasties’ and the challenges facing the modern fleet.

and named for his wife, served Freeport, Andros and North Cat between 1978 and 1981. The Marcella (I) was owned by the Taylor Corporation and family, and served Freeport from roughly 1985 to 2007. Her replacement Marcella II was said to be on the same run between 1986 and 1988, and the Marcella III between 2007 and 2009. A more modern era was ushered in with the 450-passenger, Chinese-built Fiesta Mail, which was built in 2002 and serves Freeport as well as Fort Lauderdale. Sweeting’s Cay, at the far east of Grand Bahama, benefited from Captain Dean’s addition of this cay to the runs made by his vessels Captain Dean I to V and Champion II. It is worth adding that there is now a high-speed passenger service, Pinder’s Ferry Service, between McLean’s Town Grand Bahama and Crown Haven, Abaco.

opportunities to be had. It is closer to Miami than to Nassau. Nevertheless the islands have a proud history of freighter and mail service: for example the vessel Bailey Town was built there in 1946, was 46ft 5in long and owned by Theodore R Saunders, and the F A Marie of 57ft 7in, though built in the Cayman Islands in 1928 was owned by William D Weech Jr in Bimini in the 1950s, who also owned the 58ft 5in Peloris. None are known to have carried mail however. The Bimini Mack, just shy of 100 feet long and built in St Augustine, Florida in 1981, traded into the 2000s and in 2005 the owners were listed as the “Bimini Businessman’s Association, Alice Town,” suggesting a kind of co-operative. The 126-foot motor vessel Sherice M has been serving Bimini since roughly 1995 and continues to operate today. Her captain is Shawn Munro and co-captain is Emmett Munroe. In fact, the Munroe family is believed to be the owners of the blue ship, which is kept in fine condition.

Berry Islands Bullocks Harbour has been served by the Dean family of Sandy Point, Abaco, since the 1950s, and people come from the other Berry Islands to Bullocks to collect mail and other goods.

Andros The Gary Roberts, owned by Sir George Roberts, plied between Nassau and Andros, including Lowe Sound, between 1942 and 1978. She was 66 feet long and built in Harbour Island, with two masts for auxiliary sailing. The Taylor-family-owned Cape Hatteras served North Andros between 1962 and 1968. About 56 feet long and motorised, she was skippered by Captain Nathaniel Bruce Taylor. Then the Marcella took over the route, also serving Mayaguana, until 1987. Around 1970 the 82-foot Delmar L, made of steel at St Augustine Shipbuilding, took over the route until the early 1980s. She served Kemp’s Bay, Bluff, Long Bay Cay, Driggs Hill, and Congo Town as well as Nassau and sometimes Florida. Goldfinger was a 104-foot-long former lighthouse tender which in the 1970s was, according to Jim Kerr in an article in The Abaconian, “sold for

The Lady D languishes at Potter’s Cay Dock service as a mailboat [and] sank in a storm on a run to Andros.” Another boat about which we have scant information was the Miss Beverly, which according to a telegram from the Bahamian government to the US government (leaked by WikiLeaks) in 1975, was serving Andros as a mailboat. The Dean family vessel Lady Eula briefly served Andros as well as Cat Island between 1978 and 1980. The 91-tonnene wooden vessel Harley & Charley was proposed for service to South Andros in 1989, though at the time it was serving Eleuthera. It is not known whether it served Andros. The Mangrove Cay Express II served Andros between roughly 1988 and 1995. She was 72 feet long and

served Mangrove Cay and Lisbon Creek Andros under the ownership of the Reverend Herbert King. The 94-tonne vessel Gloria was listed as serving Mangrove Cay Andros in 1989, as was the Central Andros Express (62 tonnes) and the Big Yard Express (102 tonnes), according to a study done for the government by Trevor Hamiltonne & Associates of Kingstonne Jamaica. The Lady D was built in 1992 with the appearance of a tug or supply vessel and skippered by Captain Prince Munroe. She served Fresh Creek, Staniard Creek, Stafford Creek, Behring, Blanket Sound, and Browne Sound, Central Andros until her unfortunate demise at Potter’s Cay Dock, Nassau, when she took on water. She has remained there since, taking up valuable

commercial space. The 127-tonne Lady Margo II was built in 1971 at Bayou La Batre, Alabama. She was listed in a travel guide as serving Andros in the mid-1990s. The Lisa J, 123ft 4in long and built in Marstal, Denmark, in 1960, has a fascinating history. Capable of rolling on vehicles as well as accommodating passengers, she was named Ellen Soby until 1973, then the Runden until 1999 when she was intended for sale to Italy but sold to the Bahamas instead. When her career carrying freight and passengers to Mastic Point, Morgans Bluff and Nicholl’s Town ended around 2007, she was sold to Honduran interests. In the Bahamas she was said to have been owned by the North Andros Shipping Company Limited. The Lisa J II is no less interesting, having sailed in Europe as the Schokland from the time of construction in 1952 in the Netherlands until 1985, when she was sold to interests in the Bahamas. Her captains were said to include Captain Bowleg and Captain Adderley. The ship is 143ft 5in feet long, 24ft 5in wide and draws 10 feet, with a speed of 8.5 knots and weighs 298 gross tonnes. She plies the same route as her predecessor. Mal Jack was built in 1983 and weighed 172 tonnes. She is believed to have served Andros in the late 1990s and was grounded in Andros in April 2001. It was sold to owners in Honduras and towed from Freeport to Roatan in 2006. Captain Moxey is a fine, well-maintained modern vessel built in 1998. She weighs 370 tonnes and serves Kemps Bay, The Bluff, Long Bay Cays in Andros generally on Mondays. Her captains are Boycel Moxey Jr and Kevin Moxey, and the owners are Moxey Shipping. It is believed that there was a predecessor serving Andros under the same name, as a Captain Moxey is listed in the Trevor Hamiltonne study in 1989. Both vessels were named after Captain Hezron Lenox Moxey, a renowned boat builder and sloop racer, who as a youth “sailed the waters between Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas, trading fruits, cows, rum, cigars and other goods” from his native Duncan Town, Ragged Island. A number of his seven children became captains in their own right. He was inducted into the Bahamian Sailing Hall of Fame in 1990 and awarded the British Empire Medal in 1997. The Lady Kathreina, built in 2005 and 122ft 8in long, fitted with a bow ramp for rolling cargo, served Mangrove Cay and Fresh Creek, in South

Andros. She was built of steel in Chauvin, Louisiana, and is skippered by Captain King and is still in operation. Lady Rosalind, built in 1967 in Mississippi has been serving North Andros since roughly 1990 and continues to do so as part of the Taylor Corporation fleet. She is 391 gross tonnes. Lady Rosalind II was built in 2006, also in Chauvin and serves North Andros under the captaincies of Gifford Johnson, Eddins Taylor and V H Black. She is owned by Pirates Well Investments and managed by E B Taylor and was featured in the docu-drama “Murder in Paradise” in 2013.

The Grand Master, from a new class of mailboat build for speed and reliability.

Exuma It is believed that the Exumas have a much richer history with mailboats than I have been able to divine. However, an early vessel serving those islands was The Brontes, built in 1921. Forty-two tonnes and capable of carrying 30 passengers, she served San Salvador and Rum Cay under the commands of W P Syles and a Captain Burrows. She was lost in a hurricane in July 1926 near Highbourne Cay. I am told there are mailboat name-boards hanging above the Peace & Plenty bar in George Town which can help us learn more. The little-known Staniel Cay Express is presumed to have served its namesake in the Exumas from the early 1970s to 1975 and was skippered by Rolly Gray. She was lost off Hope Town on April 6, 1975.

Captain C, the well known skipper of the Lady Francis

The Miranda was built as the Geulborg in the Netherlands in 1966 and in 1977 was purchased from Wagenborg Shipping by the Taylor Corporation of Mayaguana. She traded from Turks & Caicos, Mayaguana, the Exumas, Nassau and Miami until 1993. Captain Robert “Bob” Garroway from St Vincent mostly operated this 176-footlong, 399-tonne ship until it was sold to Haitian buyers. In 2002 it was sunk as the Gilbert Seas one and a half miles off Palm Beach. The mailboat Captain C is believed to have served Black Point and other Exuma communities from the 1980s to the present, though the current vessel was clearly built in the last decade or so. She was recently skippered by Etienne Maycock Sr. The modern vessel is of steel and over 125 feet long and is still trading. The 214-tonne Grand Master was built in 1983 by San Sebastian Marine in St Augustine, Florida, and is skippered by Lenny H and Lance Brozogzog, a father-son team, as well as Captain Rolly Gray. They serve George Town Great Exuma, leaving Tuesdays and taking 12 hours at a cost per passenger of $40. The 97-tonne Lady Blanche is said to have served the Exuma Cays between at least 1988 and 1994. The 154-tonne Lady Frances was built in 1989 in Houma, Louisiana and serves Black Point Exuma, Rum Cay and San Salvador. The 443-tonne Island Link was built in 2004 in Caboolture, Australia, and presently serves George Town as well as Long Island. Her owners are listed as Munson Shipping of Bank Lane and managers as Bahamas Searoad of Potter’s Cay West. Her captain is Jed Munroe and she is a roll-on, roll-off vessel which leaves Nassau on Tuesdays. The 485-tonne roll-on/passenger vessel Seawind is said by her owners Bahamas Ferries to serve Exuma since her construction in 2003.

Long Island has been an important destination for many decades. In the 1960s, the Taylor family served Long Island as well as Mayaguana with their 90-foot long wooden vessel Marcella, built by St Augustine, Florida, shipwrights. Her captain was owner Nathaniel Bruce Taylor as well as his son Eddins Bruce Taylor. She burned to the water line at Salt Pond, Long Island in 1986. The 430-tonne Abilin was built in Duisburg, Germany in 1962 and was photographed in 1998 serving Long Island by consultant Captain Calum Legett. She is believed to have begun her Bahamas career in the late 1980s and to have been sunk in 2007. The Dean family of Sandy Point own the 91-tonne Nay Dean, which has served northern Long Island since 1985. She is 91 tonnes, built of wood, and owned and skippered - at least part of the time - by Captain Ernest Alexander Dean. The Sherice M is 126 feet and is said to serve Salt Pond, Deadman’s Cay and Seymours, Long Island, departing Nassau on Mondays. She is a trim, smart light-blue motor freighter owned by the Munroe family and skippered by captains Shawn Munroe and Emmett Munroe. She also serves Alice Town and Cat Cay Bimini. Another Dean family vessel, the Mia Dean, has been serving southern Long Island, including Clarence Town, since about 1990. She is still operating, with distinctive blue, black, red and white striping, and is believed to be 146 tonnes. Other vessels thought to be serving Long Island from Nassau include the Island Link (since 2004), the Bahamas Ferries East Wind (since 2007, serving Simms and owned by Bahamas Ferries), Sea Spirit (former United Spirit, since 2008, owned by Captain Thomas Hanna), and a vessel named Captain Emmett serving Salt Pond, Deadman’s Cay and Seymours since 2010. • NEXT WEEK: Long Cay’s long record of mail service and the other southern islands. By George, those were the days! I AM, of course, flattered, when readers commend me for remembering the things that I write in this column. But the truth is that I don’t ‘remember’ all that I write; I simply remember where to look it up. But I am often surprised at some of the once-commonplace things that readers do not remember, often because they are just too young. This was my recent experience when talking about shops that used to be ‘downtown’ on Bay Street specifically John S George & Co Ltd and its founder, John Saffrey George, an Englishman, who came here in 1846. Until it went out of business, not all that long ago, it was the oldest store in Nassau, having opened in 1859. In those days, it was common for Bay Street merchants to live upstairs over their stores and Mr George was no exception. Store and home were just east of Bank Lane, next door to today’s Gucci shop. After the original building was destroyed by fire in 1902, a somewhat similar-looking two-storey building rose out of the ashes to house the business, but the family moved to Cascadilla, on East Street at the corner of Munning’s

Lane (now Miller’s Court). In his well-worth-reading 2005 book, ‘Reminiscing II’, Ronald G Lightbourn reported that Mr George and his hardware store sold a countless variety of merchandise and advertised: “During the three quarters of a century on the same site, and under the same name, we have done our bit to assist in the development of the City ... best illustrated by comparing everyday articles in ... stock then and now ... from tallow candles and kerosene lamps to electric bulbs ... wood stoves to kerosene stoves ... galvanized tubs to enameled baths ... draw-buckets to electric pumps ... smokescreens against mosquitoes to Monel wire screens ... sharpened conch shells, for shaving to safety razors ... the sculling oar to Johnson Outboard Motors.” Their kerosene-fired ‘Perfection Oil Heater’ was just the thing to keep the Aranha household and my newborn brother warm during the cold winter of 1926. It was used regularly until the 1940s and is still in working condition, even though the JSG stores are gone. • islandairman@gmail.com

Sex and the single plant When it comes to propagating plant species, nature has gotten very creative over the aeons. Jack Hardy explains...

Y

ou climb a mountain to meet a guru. “What is the meaning of life?” you ask him. “It is the overriding compulsion of all living things to procreate,” he tells you. “Now go forth and multiply and leave me alone.” Well, that’s a lot of comfort for those with teenage daughters. But the good news is that homo sapiens (that’s us) has more or less overcome most primal compulsions so we have little to fear except ourselves. Yes, there’s enough residue left that we frown on men and women who have never been parents but at the same time we do some math in our heads and wonder who should be sorry for whom. Plants are living things and seriously obey the call to multiply. Problem is, the vast majority of plants are anchored to the soil and therefore have to resort to what appear to be stratagems that serve to maintain the species. Plants do not have brains and these apparent stratagems are the product of natural selection processes over centuries and millennia. The basic process seems simple. Flowers are the sex organs of plants; they have male and female parts and the male parts produce pollen to fertilize the incipient seeds within the female parts. A fruit is produced that contains, eventually, seeds that are ready to grow. But there are complications. Plants like tomatoes have perfect flowers containing male and female parts that are close together and make cross pollinations very difficult in normal circumstances. Some plant flowers, such as hibiscus, have perfect flowers but the sexual parts are distant form each other. Other plants produce separate male and female flowers –

The wind from a hummingbird’s fast-beating wings scatters pollen think cucumbers – and need a vector to transfer the pollen from the male to the female. Wind, birds, insects and bats are the prime vectors. In the vegetable garden it is corn that depends on wind to carry pollen to the female silk. Were you to plant a package of corn seeds in one straight line north to south you would get poor returns. Only direct north and south winds would be useful; winds from all other quarters would merely carry pollen away. That is why we plant corn in blocks, to take advantage of the wind from all directions. Birds are attracted to flowers that are brightly coloured. They seek nectar, a sweet liquid that is produced by plants solely to attract birds and insects. The classic bird pollinator is the hummingbird with its relatively long and narrow beak with and an even longer tongue. While the hummingbird sips at the nectar at the base of a flower the wind from its wings scatters pollen. Yellowbirds and others cannot fly and sip nectar at the same time but tend to shake flowers as they crawl around and dislodge pollen. Bees are magnificent pollinators. Not only do they move around inside

flowers, they also carry pollen from one flower to another in the hairs of their body. Bees prefer flowers that are in the lower range of the spectrum, particularly shades of blue. Certain beetles have oily body surfaces that pollen sticks to and is transferred. Bats, of course, are night pollinators. Certain plants – like night blooming jessamine – are pollinated by sphinx moths that replicate the action of hummingbirds with their fast-beating wings. Plants also use scents to attract pollinators. Flies normally operate in daylight hours but if they catch the doggy-doo scent of Indian jujube flowers at night they will immediate cluster to do their duty.

After this stage the process can be considered only half done. With annuals it is fine for seeds to fall to the nearby ground and replicate their parents. Other plants need space and must try to get their seeds as far away as possible. Here wind, water, birds and you and I come into play. Wind is great at seed dispersal if the seeds have wings or a parachute. Wings cause seeds to spin and these gyrations can carry seeds a useful distance where new plants will not interfere with the parent plant. Thistledown and other parachute type seeds can travel for miles. Desert plants depend upon seasonal floods not only for irrigation but to spread seeds. Rivers are notable seed distribution vectors for plants that line their banks. The accursed casuarina has spread from its native Australia to all parts of the tropical and subtropical world because its bobs can float vast distances and remain viable. You and I and our dogs are also seed carriers. Back in the 1950s a Swiss scientist named George de Mestral took a walk in the woods with his dog. One their return he noticed seeds clinging to the dog’s fur and his clothing. He studied closely how the attachment was accomplished and then proceeded to invent Velcro, a name derived from the French velour (velvet) and crochet (hook). The parent plant of ‘sweetheart’ seeds that cling so tenaciously to our shoes and clothing after a trip into the bush should perhaps be called Velcro vine. Tumbleweed has a very efficient way of moving over the flat terrain of the US mid-west. Closer to home, some trees use explosive force to throw their seeds clear. Bauhinia seedpods twist when they dry and when ready they break open with a distinct crack and hurl seeds up to 30 feet away. Birds spread seeds by eating them then passing them out with a dollop of fertilizer. The distance travelled from ingestion to evacuation of the seeds can be considerable. There is a good reason why the favourite Bahamian pepper, bird pepper, can be found far away from cultivated gardens.
