Record Year for Plovers at Crane The last of this year’s piping plover chicks has fledged at Crane Beach in Ipswich, and Trustees is pleased to report that new records for plover protection were achieved this season. 49 pairs of plovers nested at Crane and fledged a remarkable 96 chicks. The previous records were set in 2000 when 45 pairs nested, and in 1999 when 89 chicks fledged. Abundant habitat, fewer than usual storms, and proactive predator management contributed to the encouraging numbers. The adjacent Parker River National Wildlife Refuge also had a good year, with one more pair than at Crane, but had fewer fledglings. Crane Beach fledged more chicks than any other single site statewide. Based on preliminary data, Massachusetts saw 755 nesting plover pairs, which was a nearly 10% increase over the previous year. Trustees beaches accounted for 9.3% of the entire state population, highlighting the importance of

Trustees Assembles CEO Roundtable to Benefit Boston’s Waterfront The Trustees’ One Waterfront Initiative team has assembled a task force of senior executives from Boston-based companies, across a wide spectrum of industries, in order to help shape the vision for the City’s vulnerable waterfront. “Interest among corporate leaders to support and influence the creation of accessible, welcoming open space and world-class waterfront parks in Boston is high,” said Trustees President & CEO Barbara Erickson. “The One Waterfront CEO Roundtable will serve as a vehicle to coalesce ideas and spur action.” Roundtable members will act as strategic conveners between public, social, and private sectors to ensure that the One Waterfront Initiative rises to the challenge of our vulnerable harbor city—for current and future generations. The Roundtable is chaired by Ronald P. O’Hanley of State Street
Corporation and, as of press time, members include CEOs and senior executives of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, PricewaterhouseCoopers, National Grid, Converse, Putnam Investments, MassMutual, Ocean Spray, and Liberty Mutual. In the past three years, The Trustees has advanced its One Waterfront Initiative, gathering state and local support and establishing a visible leadership voice for a waterfront that is resilient, accessible to the public, and green. With strong community, government, nonprofit, and business support established and growing, and progress being made on priority sites, Trustees is well positioned for the next steps in this important initiative. 20th Annual Rappaport Prize-Winning Artist Named Boston-based visual artist Daniela Rivera is the 2019 recipient of deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum’s annual Rappaport Prize. The prestigious award, which is presented to a contemporary artist with strong connections to New England, celebrates the achievement and potential of an artist who has demonstrated significant creativity and vision. It was established in 2000 to help keep the work of contemporary artists in the public eye and is one of the most generous contemporary art awards of its kind. The Prize was endowed in perpetuity by the Phyllis and Jerome Lyle Rappaport Foundation, which has honored the 20th Anniversary of the Prize by increasing the annual award amount by $10,000 to $35,000. “I’m delighted for deCordova to award this year’s twentieth Rappaport Prize to Daniela Rivera,” says John B. Ravenal, The Trustees’ Vice President for Arts & Culture and Artistic Director at deCordova. “Her sophisticated site-specific installations embody a fascinating intersection of politics, history, and perception, and I can’t think of a more deserving

recipient.” Rivera, a Chilean-born painter and installation artist, often works with immersive architectural forms on a monumental scale. Having grown up under the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile before moving to Boston in 2002, Rivera addresses the specific history of repression that she experienced firsthand. Each year’s Prize-winning artist presents a free talk; this year’s Rappaport Prize Lecture is Wednesday, October 23 at 6:30PM—visit thetrustees.org/ decordova for tickets.
New Little Women Movie Filmed at Five Trustees Locations Sony Pictures’ upcoming film adaptation release of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women hits theaters on December 25. The Greta Gerwig-directed film—which stars Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, and Meryl Streep— was shot in 2018 at various locations in Massachusetts, including five Trustees properties: Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, The Old Manse in Concord, Crane Beach (in photo, right) and Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, and the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton. played, explored, and wrote at the Fruitlands Farmhouse in her childhood, and she penned the now classic semi-autobiographical novel 25 years later in 1868. Trustees will celebrate the movie’s locations and premiere beginning this fall. Little Women-based programs are available at Fruitlands Museum, including among others a book club and behind-the-scenes tours that include the farmhouse and the Shaker building, which served as Meg’s house for the movie. For updates and more information on Little Women-themed programs and events, visit thetrustees.org/littlewomen.
Plans Announced for Garden Expansions Work will begin soon on previously announced expansions at two of the Trustees’ most beloved garden properties, Long Hill and The Stevens-Coolidge Place. Working closely with Mikyoung Kim Design landscape architects and Maryann Thompson Architects to craft inspired visions for both reservations, Trustees is also collaborating with Members and local community supporters to advise and inform the design process. Visitors to The Stevens-Coolidge Place will be welcomed through a new entry on Chickering Road and will enjoy a series of innovative garden experiences through new pathways to the main house. Plans for a new parking lot and entry road have been submitted
recently to the Town of North Andover for permitting, and Trustees is anticipating that visitors will be able to enjoy these changes beginning in summer 2020. At Long Hill, the master plan fosters horticultural education and engaging visitor experiences across Long Hill’s meadows, orchard, gardens, and woodland trails. Extensive historical research on the history of the Sedgwick family and the house, landscape, and gardens has uncovered intriguing facts: Long Hill’s gardens originally included expansive views from its hilltop setting, among others. Rediscovery of those views will be a focal point as more detailed planning work occurs this fall, as will the transformation of Long

The Trustees is grateful to members of the Sedgwick family and the North Shore Garden Club for their ongoing support of the organization’s vision for Long Hill and is excited to share news on progress at both locations as work continues.

Dear Members: Thank you for your continued support of The Trustees. You allow us to protect the places we all love — from the beautiful Berkshires and hill towns of Western Massachusetts to our urban spaces and varied coastline. Our strategic vision for our current and future impact wouldn’t be possible without your help. Our vision is to preserve more iconic spaces. We can officially say that the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln is now part of The Trustees portfolio. As part of your membership, we invite you to explore this magnificent gem and a powerful interaction between art and nature. Children are also welcome to run through the sculpture park, or to explore the interactive exhibits created just for them. We think they will have just as much fun as you will. Our vision is to elevate cultural and agricultural experiences. We are making progress on our plan to transform Long Hill in Beverly and The Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover into flagships of horticultural beauty. Our team has put a lot of research into the original landscape architecture for authenticity. When it’s completed, the garden experiences and hilltop views will be more spectacular than they have been in a long time.

We haven’t “gone Hollywood” but Hollywood did come to us. If you’ve seen the trailer for Little Women, you may have seen some familiar locations, including Castle Hill, Crane Beach, Fruitlands Museum, Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate, and The Old Manse. The movie opens on Christmas Day, but we’ll have some fun, period-appropriate events throughout the fall. We hope you’ll join us. We understand that each of you may have different reasons for your deep MMIT ©A BOVE SU connection to The Trustees: waterfall wandering, beach lounging, Friday farm dinners, kids’ camps, or the simple serenity of our trails. Whatever your reason, we encourage you to share that passion with someone new. We all need to cultivate The Trustees of the future to have a sustainable organization to protect the places we all love for everyone. Forever. I look forward to seeing you at a property this fall for one of our events. Warm Regards,
Our vision is to protect nature and land. As we respond to a changing climate, we are very mindful of the 120 miles of coastline that we protect. Within that are 48 threatened and

Art and Nature Nurtured deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum secures a sustainable future as part of Trustees BY MEREDITH CUTLER n a wooded mound overlooking a rolling green lawn, a preschool aged child and her mother approach a white marble sculpture depicting an elongated female face. “What’s it made out of? Can you make that face?” the mother asks. The child contorts her expression, mimicking the exaggerated form of artist Jaume Plensa’s Humming. “Stone!” she answers proudly. Some 20 miles from Boston, the grounds of the 28.4-acre deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln are dotted with visitors. From the museum’s rooftop Rappaport Terrace overlooking deCordova’s bucolic grounds abutting Flint’s Pond, families, seniors, students, and other visitors from all corners of the globe can be seen rambling among the park’s 60-plus modern and contemporary sculptures. Zooming out on the grounds from this lofty vantage point, the giants of the park become elemental—the neon pop of powder-coated steel in dialogue with the fluidity of an enormous horsehair curtain moving in the breeze. Some works are on permanent display; others rotate in periodically. “People who visit once or twice a year often say, ‘Everything looks different! How is that possible?’” remarks Senior Curator Sarah Montross. “It’s because as we move in loans and commissions, the place looks different every time.”

Since the museum officially opened to the public in 1950, visitors have flocked to deCordova—some 80,000 a year at last count—to experience art in an unparalleled setting. With a 3,500-piece permanent collection of modern and contemporary art that devotes special attention to New England artists, as well as rotating exhibitions featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists, it’s a perennially relevant and everchanging destination. This autumn, Andy Goldsworthy’s long-awaited Watershed installation joins the cast of sculptures
sprouting from rolling lawns and nestled in woodlands. And after officially integrating with The Trustees in July—becoming the newest addition to The Trustees’ portfolio of 118 properties and opening new frontiers for the organization’s mission—deCordova scribes a new chapter in a story that began over a century ago. for regional artists in the Boston area, the original committee of incorporation sold off the estate’s eclectic collection, using the proceeds to create a museum of regional contemporary art with a strong educational mission. Renovations led by Lincoln-based modernist architect John Quincy Adams began in 1946, transforming the “castle” into a museum, which opened to the public in 1950. The park’s inaugural Outdoor Sculpture exhibition was held in 1966. Over the subsequent half-century, deCordova has established a reputation for outstanding modern and contemporary art exhibitions in an unparalleled setting, amplified by stellar educational and interpretive programs for all ages. The original mandate’s special focus on New England artists carries through with the invitational deCordova New England Biennial—a coveted venue for regional artists—and with the Rappaport Prize, a $35,000 prize awarded each year to an artist with strong ties to New England. prominent Boston family. A self-educated man, Julian achieved prosperity as a tea broker, merchant, investor, and most notably, president of the Union Glass Company in Somerville. Meanwhile, the de Cordovas became passionate world travelers, returning from their adventures with exotic objects and art to fill their 22-room home in Lincoln. In 1910 the couple realized a longtime dream, remodeling the residence to resemble a European castle complete with turrets, and creating a sky-lit Picture Gallery (now the 6

Museum’s Dewey Family Gallery). “Someday my castle will be opened as a museum and dedicated to the youth of the world,” Julian promised. Heirless after the passing of Lizzie and adult son Dana, Julian gave his estate to the residents of the Town of Lincoln in 1930, with the stipulation that it become a public museum of art and park following his death. (Julian subsequently lived there until his passing in 1945.) Motivated by a dearth of modern art exhibitions and venues
With all that deCordova offers to the community today, it’s shocking to think how close it came to unraveling. When he became Executive Director of deCordova in early 2015, longtime curator of modern and contemporary art John Ravenal was thrilled. “But,” Ravenal, now The Trustees’ new Vice President for Arts & Culture and Artistic Director for deCordova, adds, “[I] quickly realized that there were some financial challenges.” A disproportionately small endowment for a U.S. museum, compounded by a shrinking pool of leadership donors supporting deCordova at a disproportionately large level, made for an unsustainable model. The future of the institution was at stake, and the stakeholders—including the board and the residents of the Town of Lincoln—were soon at attention. “We set about together trying to solve the problem,” says Ravenal. When he met Trustees CEO Barbara Erickson, Ravenal quickly recognized a strong mission alignment between the two organizations, “but not direct duplication the way there is with [another] art museum. That turned out to be the sweet spot. We share so many values, but we weren’t already

DeCordova’s robust offerings of educational programs and camps provide compelling ways to connect children to both art and nature.
delivering the same experience. We could complement each other.” The boards of the two organizations agreed: through a partnership with The Trustees, deCordova would achieve fiscal stability without losing its intended purpose as a museum and sculpture park. After lengthy negotiations with the Town of Lincoln, which retains ownership of the land and the building (“They are the ultimate
trustees of the original gift of deCordova,” Ravenal emphasizes), The Trustees and deCordova finalized plans for integration last March and officially integrated on July 1. In addition, the organizations combined staffs to form a new Arts & Culture division, tasked with developing exhibitions, collections management, and interpretive strategies across The Trustees’ entire portfolio of properties in the Commonwealth.
Today at deCordova, beyond its singular setting and compelling history, a robust calendar of programming offers new reasons to visit all year round, from yoga in the park in the warmer months to guided snowshoe tours in winter, lectures and workshops by exhibiting artists, summer concerts in the café courtyard, and camps for area children. (The private, not-for-profit Lincoln Nursery School also operates on the grounds—the first preschool to be embedded within a contemporary art museum.) “There is a huge range of things that the museum offers to bring people closer to art and nature,” says Julie Bernson, The Trustees’ Associate Director of Learning. “That’s what is beautiful about [deCordova]. There’s an audio tour as well as our mobile app for each sculpture. So, if visitors really want to know what the artist or curator has to say, there are all those ways in.” And this fall, with the opening of internationally renowned land artist Andy Goldsworthy’s Watershed at deCordova, visitors are in for a profound, immersive experience. The permanent, site-specific installation reveals previously overlooked forces of nature by channeling groundwater runoff from the upper parking lot through a series of drains and pipe into a nine-bysixteen-foot granite shed set into the pond side hill. In wet weather, groundwater pours from a circular stonework outlet in the shed’s rear wall. When the skies clear, the mineral deposits and eventual moss that water leaves behind will mark the past and anticipate the future. Continuing that dialogue between seen and unseen, past and future, inside the museum, a trio of photography exhibitions that Montross describes as “revealing the poetic potential of nature” also opens this fall. [See the Things To Do calendar for details.] It is a not-to-be-missed experience. “It’s a sort of playfulness; ways in which there’s mystery involved in the natural world,” reflects Montross. It’s through that dialogue— that sweet spot where the interaction of art and landscape change the way each is seen— that deCordova continues its legacy, hand in hand with the Trustees’ vision. happaquiddick Island, jutting off of the eastern face of Martha’s Vineyard, is a landscape that’s as vulnerable as it is beautiful. The shifting, separating, and reconnecting of Chappaquiddick— literally “separated island,” from the Wampanoag word cheppiaquidne—is well-documented. A major storm cut through the three-mile barrier beach connecting the island to Martha’s Vineyard in 2007, and in 2012 when Superstorm Sandy hit, Wasque Reservation—on Chappaquiddick’s southeastern corner—lost significant portions of upland area. Exposed to the force of waves, coastal banks rapidly eroded into the sea, with damage affecting parking lots, trails, and trees.

CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER
For The Trustees, watching one of its landmark properties literally start to crumble into the sea was a turning point. “That was the first time we sat down and said, ‘We’re witnessing accelerated coastal change. How do we respond?’” explains President & CEO Barbara Erickson. “It required us to think about what was most significant about our coast, and how to be strategic—recognizing our strengths as a coastal landowner, and strengths as an organization to engage the public.” A Climate Vulnerability Assessment, conducted in partnership with Woods Hole Group, clarified what Trustees properties were facing: a “tipping point” of rapidly accelerating changes in the next 20 to 30 years. A belief in the value of the coast and the desire to protect it from harm have been parts of the mission of The Trustees since its founding. In 1889, Trustees Founder Charles Eliot wrote of coastal development: “The real danger of the present situation is that this annual flood of humanity, with its permanent structures for shelter, may so completely overflow and occupy the limited stretch of coast which it invades, as to rob it of that flavor of wildness and remoteness.” Eliot set an example for the future. Now, the more than 120 miles of coastline The Trustees owns and protects face the challenge of a changing climate—a challenge to be confronted head-on. “We’re taking a hopeful and optimistic approach as opposed to feeling powerless,” says Trustees Director of Coast and Natural Resources Tom O’Shea, who is leading the coastal strategy. “We have always had the power of invention and innovation to change our world when we needed to. We’re not going to be able to respond everywhere, but we’re going to adapt where it makes sense.” SHAPING THE FUTURE
With leadership in place and planning complete, a five-year plan is underway. For O’Shea, the clear path forward is something he calls a bridge solution to a truly daunting challenge of responding to a changing climate: working with the best available

science and continuing to innovate in order to protect the most vulnerable properties for as long as possible—so that the next generation can pick up the reins and continue to build upon our learnings. Today, several projects are monitoring changes and testing innovative solutions. At Old Town Hill in Newbury and two other Trustees sites in Essex and Ipswich, a pilot project has begun to “heal” 300 acres of salt marsh damaged by historic ditching processes. Funding will also allow for new land acquisition, protecting pathways for future salt marsh migration. Nearby, the first phase of a project to raise Argilla Road—the key point of access to Castle Hill and Crane Beach—is complete, in a partnership with the Town of Ipswich, and state funding has recently been secured for the next phase. Offshore, the Town of Essex, Boston University, and The Trustees are measuring wave and sediment movement to model and plan for the future integrity of Crane Beach and Essex Bay.
Further south, The Trustees’ One Waterfront Initiative is working to build resilient and accessible open green space along Boston’s vulnerable harbor. Expansions of coastal volunteer and educational programs are underway, so that visitors of all ages can actively take part, whether as part of a beach cleanup, or participating in citizen research to conserve habitat and wildlife, or having fun while learning at a hands-on educational program at a coastal visitor center. It’s a lot of activity, and it’s ramping up. O’Shea is now leading the creation of a “State of the Coast” report, to be published annually for five years. Along with a new Trustees on the Coast microsite and podcast, The Trustees aims to engage with and inspire generations of coastal advocates and stewards, in hopes of informing, empowering, and enchanting. “The coast is experiencing unprecedented change today unlike any other time since our founding,” says O’Shea. “Our next step is to focus on more areas. What kind of places along the coast can we protect that make sense, for coastal habitat, for resilience, for public access? This action is part of the DNA of The Trustees. This is how we can help live our mission.”

EDUCATION UPDATE
School’s Out(side)! C
Inspiring a Love of the Natural World through Education
reating a better future depends on the next generation. That’s why The Trustees is committed to helping our children and young adults build strong connections to the Commonwealth’s natural environment and rich cultural history.
We work to create and maintain those bonds through a variety of initiatives: enrolling kids in our nature-based preschool, hosting hundreds of school groups on our properties, providing internships in environmental science, and more. Each year we inspire youth through experiential educational programs which augment and enrich traditional classroom curricula—all against the animating backdrops of Trustees working farms, coastal sites, historic houses and museums, and recreational properties. One year ago, Trustees launched the Cooperative Nature School at Moose Hill Farm in Sharon, in partnership with the Sharon Cooperative School. Preschoolers spent the year following a curriculum that brought them outdoors for half the time they spent in school, exploring the trails as they sharpened their investigative skills. This September we welcomed 30 new students to embark 28

on their own nature-based learning adventures. At the high school level, juniors from the Norfolk County Agricultural School recently completed the second annual installment of a five-week environmental science internship program. The students traveled to 14 Trustees properties to take part in trail maintenance, invasive species control, engaging visitors, and other endeavors. School groups bring thousands of kids to our sites year-round—more than 11,000

Build a lifelong love of the outdoors through hiking ©MOLLY HUDSON/HIKE TRUSTEES
BY JEFF HARDER
A thunderstorm transformed dimples on the ground into muddy puddles, so the children came to Castle Hill in rain boots. The lingering drizzle might have kept their parents indoors, but since the kids were still game for hiking along the marsh and the back dunes, entire families embarked on a journey of simple pleasures along Cedar Point Trail, scouring for worms, splashing in puddles, running through a pine grove wide-open for exploration. One parent whispered to another: I never would have taken my kids outside today by myself, but this is great. 30
THE TRUSTEES
“So many families are afraid to get outside, especially when it’s muddy like that, but that’s a kid’s dream,” says Victoria Sindorf, The Trustees’ Education Manager for the Crane Estate, who led the two-hour sojourn as part of a series of Monday school holiday hikes. “Honestly, that rainy-day hike was one of the best ones we’ve ever done.” GUIDED ADVENTURES
No matter the weather, hiking—the basic act of setting one foot in front of the other to get a better look at where you are—is perhaps the most accessible way to experience the outdoors. And whether you’re a parent sharing your passion for the world outside or you’re just looking for ways to spend more quality time with your kin, The Trustees offers a range of guided hikes and programs aimed at helping families get acquainted with the easy wonders of hiking. This fall, properties ranging from Notchview in the Berkshires to Menemsha Hills on the Vineyard host Trustees Trekkers, a series of ranger-led family hikes for all ages and abilities. And with 118 reservations spread across the Commonwealth, most families are within a half hour of a hike on a Trustees property. “Our goal isn’t to have families come out and do every single one our family hikes, even though that would be amazing,” Sindorf says. “The goal is to have them go out together and hike on their own.” Hiking is an ideal vehicle for children’s first forays into the outdoors, with a pace suited to stop-and-start exploration, low physical and financial barriers to entry, and health benefits that transcend low-impact exercise. “You’re disconnecting from technology. You’re using your senses and really being present in a given place,” says Kristen Swanberg, Director of Education and Public Programming for The Trustees. “It can provide a good opportunity to strengthen that family bond, and it can be a little bit of an adventure.” Laurie Nehring, a naturalist who has led family hikes at various Trustees properties, specializes in such mini-adventures. At Fruitlands Museum, she leads nighttime “owl prowls,” demonstrating the proper hoo-hoo call to attract barred owls and shepherding families through the dusk. “I try to help them feel comfortable getting their kids out,” she

says. “A child might be talking while we’re trying to be quiet, and I’ll try to get them involved by saying, ‘Can you sit with me and we’ll watch for owls together?’” (If they have binoculars, she deputizes them as her assistants.) “They come away being a little more knowledgeable, and they have a little bit of a sense of awe,” Nehring says. NATURAL CURIOSITY
With the guidance of experts, The Trustees’ family hikes help demystify parents’ most frequent reasons for trepidation in the outdoors—ticks, mosquitos, poison ivy—and provide a textbook-free, fun-first education in ecology. “One of the things I try to drive home is that you don’t have to be a naturalist to teach your children to love nature and develop their scientific curiosity,” Sindorf says. To make things interesting and keep kids engaged, she’ll organize hikes around simple scavenger hunts—for instance, what do you see that birds might like to eat, or where might they like to hide out? What things are on the trail that weren’t there last time? “That gives a bit of structure to what you’re doing, so it’s not just like, ‘we’re hiking.’” And when parents set out on their own, taking a few easy steps can help keep smiles on kids’ faces. Always bring snacks and water. Stay toward the center of the trail. If you’re heading out alone, take a hard copy of the trail map or snap a picture on your phone in case

you lose service. Before buying high-priced hiking accoutrements, stock up on tick repellent, bug spray, and footwear that can keep you going. Instead of setting out to finish a fivemile loop, pick an out-and-back route where you can encourage spontaneous wandering. Ultimately, Nehring says parents’ enthusiasm might be the most important influence on their children’s attitudes toward the outdoors. “When parents jump right into the

activity and demonstrate their natural curiosity—even when they have no idea of the name of the beautiful flower or metallic looking beetle—their kids do the same.” Follow their lead, and before you know it, their natural curiosity becomes a natural love of the outdoors. Special Places MARY CUMMINGS PARK photo, right BURLINGTON & WOBURN Mary Cummings Park is the 10th largest park within Greater Boston and one of the last significant, unprotected open green spaces in Burlington. The park is owned by the City of Boston through a trust established by Mary P.C. Cummings—for whom the park was named—a Massachusetts resident who gave the land to the City in order to keep it open to the public. The only parcel of land zoned as open space in Burlington, the park provides outdoor recreational opportunities and important habitat for rare and native species with its mosaic of open meadows, wetlands, and woodlands. The Trustees has been in negotiation with the City of Boston for several years to take on the management of the more than 200-acre park. A capital campaign for the property has been completed, thanks to generous donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations, and the award of a state grant. With funding in hand, a master plan—which was shaped through a series of public info sessions—is nearing completion and construction efforts will soon begin. New trails—including a universal access trail and the MilliporeSigma Science & Nature Trail—are planned, as is grassland habitat restoration and reestablishment of a pollinator meadow, removal of invasives, and creation of a new access gateway, picnic area, and community lawn space. THE TRUSTEES
The Trustees cares for 118 special places—nearly 27,000 acres all across Massachusetts are open for public use and enjoyment through our important work. We are your partner in protecting the places that people love: for 128 years, we have been saving the most exceptional landscapes the Commonwealth has to offer. We are pleased to report that several iconic properties are nearing permanent protection, and we are excited that with your continued support these special places will soon be open for everyone, forever.

is grateful for the support of the Towns of Burlington and Woburn, as well as the Friends of Mary Cummings Park, area residents, local recreational groups, and businesses. Look for updates on thetrustees. org as we anticipate the opening of the park as a new Trustees reservation in Spring 2020. JEWELL HILL photo, top ASHBY, ASHBURNHAM & FITCHBURG The summit of Jewell Hill (1,411 feet) is the pinnacle of an idyllic and unprotected 300-acre agricultural property amidst an expansive protected landscape. Wooded trails lead to an overlook with sweeping views of the Farm and the more than 2,000 acres of surrounding protected land—on a clear day, views extend to the Boston
skyline 45 miles away—and are perfect for year-round recreation. The property also presents an important opportunity to protect watershed lands that serve the City of Fitchburg. This area of the state is steeped in a history of small family farms, and the Crocker family has kept Jewell Hill in agricultural production for 100 years. The Trustees is extremely grateful to the family, which has demonstrated their commitment to protecting this land’s open space values through a significant ‘bargain sale’ of the property. In order to help permanently protect properties like Jewell Hill, The Trustees received a generous bequest from the estate of Jamie Hudson—an avid skier, hiker, and biker, who served the organization as an active member of our Governance volunteers. Jamie passed away too soon several years ago from ALS. We are grateful to Jamie for his gift through the Semper Virens Society, and to the entire Hudson family. We are also grateful for the support we’ve received from the Towns of Ashby and Ashburnham, and the City of Fitchburg; each municipality is pursuing state grant funding to help permanently protect Jewell Hill. State grant funding will allow Trustees to leverage private donations and help meet acquisition and reservation start-up costs. For more information and to contribute to the protection of Jewell Hill and other future reservations, please visit thetrustees.org/land.

ost of us didn’t discover our purpose between college semesters, but that’s precisely what happened to Bob Murray when he took a summer job at The Stevens-Coolidge Place. “In terms of applying thoughtful care to a historic house and landscape that provided such great experiences, that was very meaningful to me,” he says. That adventure also launched his career with The Trustees: after graduating from the University of Massachusetts, Bob held full-time stewardship positions on the North Shore and helped steer massive projects to completion—namely a threeyear, $3+ million restoration of Castle Hill’s Grand Allée, Casino, and Italian

to our team and a leader for stewardship staff across the state.” For Bob, “managing our resources statewide over the geographic spread of our properties can be challenging, but I think it also shows the diversity that we have and the types of work we’re engaged in,” he says. “I couldn’t have predicted 37 years ago that I’d be involved in creating a commercial kitchen, but in hindsight, it all makes sense.” And as much as things have changed—and as humbled as he feels being named The Trustees’ 2019 Employee of the Year—Bob starts his days at Long Hill just as he has everywhere else: with a morning stroll through the property. “I love the morning light, the peacefulness and quietness, and that sense of taking stock and building on previous progress.” We congratulate you, Bob, on this well deserved honor!
