Trustees & Notch Brewing to Present Outdoor ‘Biergartens’ The Trustees and Salem-based craft brewery Notch Brewing are pleased to announce a new partnership to bring a series of familyfriendly, outdoor ‘biergarten’ experiences and mobile tap room offerings to some of the Trustees parks, farms, and cultural sites this year. These new experiences epitomize both organizations’ shared goals of building community, supporting local farms and food producers, and getting more people outside. Spanning three days, each biergarten will present family-friendly activities, food, refreshments, and entertainment, and will highlight each location’s unique character, history, and natural wonders. The weekends will feature locally crafted session (low alcohol) beer by Notch, which grows its
barley and malt locally in Hadley, MA. The gardens are modeled after European-style, outdoor beer gardens growing in popularity both nationally and internationally as more and more people look for ways to enjoy leisure time together with family and friends. Our mission is to provide fun and innovative ways to get people, especially families, into the outdoors and enjoying nature together, and we’re very excited to be working with Notch Brewing as their first official outdoor partner. For more information and a schedule of biergarten appearances, visit thetrustees.org/notch.
A-Maze-ing Art at Castle Hill Trustees is pleased to announce awardwinning contemporary artist Alicja Kwade will reveal her first commissioned large-scale public artwork in the U.S. at our very own Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich on Saturday, May 19. After being postponed from last fall, the installation—titled TunnelTeller and designed specifically for the site of the Great House’s former hedge maze—will be on-site until April 2019. Kwade’s piece represents the third installation in the Trustees’ Art & the Landscape series, following works by Sam Durant at The Old Manse in Concord in 2016, and Jeppe Hein at World’s End in Hingham in 2016-17. Internationally recognized for creating works that interpret and question reality, time, science, and space, Alicja Kwade is a rising star in the art world. She had two new works presented in the 2017 Venice Biennale, her

Support Sought to Acquire Marblehead’s Gerry Island The Trustees has an opportunity to protect Gerry Island in scenic Little Harbor of Marblehead, pending successful fundraising for stewardship work and the reservation’s endowment. A beloved and iconic feature of the area’s coastal landscape, and neighbor to The Trustees’ Crowninshield Island, Gerry Island has been identified as a critical open space opportunity for the Town of Marblehead. The Trustees acquisition, a proposed gift, will provide for the island’s permanent protection as public space, enabling additional access to the coast, expanding recreational options, and protecting an important coastal viewshed. The island’s history is also compelling; it was owned in the mid-18th century by Thomas Gerry, whose son Elbridge Gerry, rose to prominence as a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, Governor of the Commonwealth, and Vice President to James Madison. He inspired the term “gerrymandering,” which was coined after Gerry signed into law a re-districting bill that favored his party. Gerry Island is uniquely
situated at the end of a naturally occurring gravel land-bridge exposed at low tide, allowing visits by foot. The island is a popular destination for those seeking to explore the intertidal zone, enjoy unique views of the historic Marblehead shoreline, or visit by canoe or SUP. To acquire and permanently protect Gerry Island, Trustees needs to raise

a total of $250,000. Please visit thetrustees. org/gerry for more information on the Trustees plans for the island, as well as its cultural and environmental significance, and to contribute to its permanent protection.

STRATEGIC PLAN
Gaining Momentum Trustees Launches New Five-Year Strategic Plan At the end of the fiscal year (March 31,) Trustees reached the successful completion of our 2018 Strategic Plan, The Path Forward, and we are now launching our new 2023 plan after receiving the unanimous approval of the Board of Directors at their most recent meeting. The next plan, tentatively titled Momentum, is built around five strategic goals which will elevate our important and vibrant mission work to protect the iconic places of Massachusetts and to grow our constituency base, while securing a stable foundation for the continuing fiscal health of the organization. ©TRUS TE
Momentum articulates our efforts in the near term to connect people to the places that sustain us and ensure these places will continue to be enjoyed and remain special for future generations. Some of the strategic directions of this plan will be familiar— as they continue the legacy work of our just completed plan. There are also initiatives that constitute new directions for the organization, such as a commitment to our coastline in response to the challenges of sea level rise, and an ambitious waterfront park in Boston. We also will express new commitments to getting the next generation outdoors through fresh approaches to encouraging recreational play.
CONTENTS
We are excited to begin sharing the strategic directions which will yield these goals, as we continue to build on The Trustees’ strengths as the leading conservation and preservation organization in the Commonwealth, provide broader and more diverse ways for members, volunteers, and visitors to engage with and support our mission, and to secure our legacy of protecting special places for future generations and beyond. For more information on the new strategic plan and The Trustees mission and direction over the course of the next five years, please visit thetrustees.org/momentum.

Things To Do
Inspiration Grows Here
Restore, Renew, and Secure Dear Members,
©TRUS TE
Every spring we literally begin to uncover the land that has been sleeping under the snow, ice, and winter debris. Our farmers prepare the fields and greenhouses for the summer’s CSA bounty. Our horticultural staff plan their garden improvements. Curators and historic site staff begin to prepare the houses for greeting the season’s first guests. Stewardship staff groom the trails and walking paths for visitors to enjoy. Each team is joined by a veritable army of volunteers, who provide invaluable skills and time necessary to do this amazing work. Increasingly every year, we must assess what damages have occurred from storms like Grayson and Riley, or just from rapidly changing weather patterns. More and more, our landscapes must recover from changes that we had not anticipated and that require a greater investment of care and resources. We are in the “forever” business and the cost of care changes over time: It almost always grows. I’ve seldom seen it become easier. That’s why we continue to work to secure our future. And to grow our base of members, supporters, and visitors. Without all of you, we don’t have a future. We have just completed our most recent strategic plan, The Path Forward, and this April, we begin another five-year plan that will lead us to a more secure future, one that is built around our core principles of saving and protecting special places for all to enjoy. Please take a look and join us on this next phase of Trustees momentum. Warm Regards,
ES

The Trustees’ Work in Boston—Then and Now
Capital Improvement BY VICTORIA ABBOTT RICCARDI Ever since Charles Eliot founded The Trustees in Boston in 1891, the city has remained a vital area of interest for the organization. Rapid urban development back in Eliot’s day, sparked the young conservationist’s desire to create an organization that could preserve swaths of nature “as a valuable antidote to the poisonous struggling and excitement of city life.” His landscape design work, both alone and eventually through the Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot office, resulted in many of the beautiful parks, concourses, and open spaces we see in Boston today. And now, as Boston’s building boom continues, particularly along the waterfront, The Trustees feels the same imperative to foster healthy refreshment, recreation, and a connection with the land through preservation within the capital. “The work Charles Eliot began so many years ago is still vitally important today,” says Barbara Erickson,

THE TRUSTEES
President & CEO of The Trustees. “He formed the organization to preserve access to open space for those that live and work in Boston, and we have always believed that imperative would one day extend to places within the city limits.”
The Early Years: Boston & Beyond Some of Eliot’s earliest endeavors, both as a landscape architect and founder of The Trustees, involved working with Boston’s park commissions and committees to help them better understand how few open spaces Boston offered its residents, particularly in comparison to other major world cities, like London and Paris, as well as how little public access there was to nearby rivers, ponds, lakes, shores, and beaches. The result of Eliot’s efforts was the creation of the Metropolitan Park Commission, the first regional park system in the United States, which within a mere twelve years of its establishment had protected nearly 10,000 acres of public open space and 26.3 miles of public parkway around Boston. For the next several decades, The Trustees acquired a broad range of properties largely outside of Boston, mainly because that is where opportunities arose. These acquisitions ranged from islands and woodlands to
Trustees founder Charles Eliot’s (left) earliest writings concerned areas in and around Boston where he saw the open landscape being rapidly eliminated, and those words still ring true today. Said Eliot, “The life history of humanity has proved nothing more clearly than that crowded populations, if they would live in health and happiness, must have space for air, for light, for exercise, for rest, and for the enjoyment of that peaceful beauty of nature which...is so wonderfully refreshing to the tired souls of townspeople.”
hilltops and historic homes. The Trustees also grew as an organization. By 1967, when Gordon Abbott Jr. became its Director, the Annual Report listed The Trustees as having 44 reservations, an expanding staff, scores of volunteers, and a mission to establish a new management system and future direction for the organization, which had all but doubled its endowment due to a recent gift. 1960s-90s: Collaboration & Conservation The Trustees became involved with Boston again in 1968 when it hosted a Parkland
Conference to share the results of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s open space and recreation study of Boston Harbor and the Boston Basin’s three major rivers: the Charles, Mystic, and Neponset. One of the most important results of the conference was the establishment of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Open Space and Outdoor Recreation, whose members included many affiliated with The Trustees, including Abbott. The mission of the Commission, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, was
to review the Commonwealth’s open space and recreation needs and make recommendations to then Governor Francis W. Sargent. The review took one year, but yielded many valuable and landmark recommendations, including public ownership and control of the thirty-four islands of Boston Harbor. In the 1970s, the islands became Boston Harbor Island State Park and in 1996, they were designated as a National Park unit, managed by a partnership of member organizations, including The Trustees. Another recommenda-

tion to protect agricultural land would lead to the creation of the Agriculture Preservation Restriction (APR) that has provided tax relief to struggling farmers wishing to continue to maintain their family farms to this day. Many of the Commission’s remaining recommendations focused on protecting landscapes in urban areas throughout the state—over time most of those recommendations also came to fruition. The 2000s: New Connections It wasn’t until the 2000s that The Trustees became active in Boston again, this time through an affiliation with the Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN), which was founded in 1977 to help communities preserve and improve urban spaces through 6

the development of Wilds, Greenways, and community gardens. It was just the kind of work that aligned with The Trustees’ ongoing preservation efforts in urban areas outside Boston. “We’d been doing conservation work in gateway cities, like Leominster, Fitchburg, and Fall River,” says Jocelyn Forbush, Chief of Operations and Programs for The Trustees, “but looking for a way to work in Boston. When we met the folks at BNAN, we knew we wanted to partner with them.” Thus, in 2006 The Trustees became affiliated with BNAN and then the two merged in 2014. To date, The Trustees and BNAN have 56 community gardens across eight Boston neighborhoods and The Trustees helps coordinate activities related to all of the city’s more than 200
community gardens. With a strong toehold now in the city, The Trustees began to investigate other ways they could serve the city and foster community engagement. When the concept of Boston Public Market—a 100-percent locally-sourced food market (and the only one in the country)—became a reality in 2011, The Trustees jumped at the opportunity to become a founding partner and the lead programming partner, since connecting people to locally-grown food is central to the organization’s mission. When the market opened in 2015, The Trustees had the two presences that it still maintains. “First, we have a vendor booth for Appleton Farms, where we also represent the
Today: The Waterfront Challenge Concurrent with that effort, The Trustees recognized the immense development throughout Boston’s waterfront area was happening without consideration of the need for open space, and began to look for land preservation opportunities along the fragile harborfront. The Trustees has long been involved in protecting vulnerable coastal areas, and became concerned with the impact of sea level rise and storm impacts on Boston’s waterfront. “The way we see it,” says Nick Black, Managing Director of The Trustees’ Boston Waterfront Initiative, “Boston’s waterfront is a critically important place to be focusing our energy as a conservation organization. Its health impacts the largest population in New England and the time for action is now, before the opportunity to preserve open space is lost forever.” So, in the last two years, The Trustees has been working to determine what part of the Boston waterfront it wanted to help preserve, using four guiding principles. “First, we want the site to eventually include a world-class design element, as a draw for residents and visitors around the world,” says Black. “Next, we are focused on elements of inclusion and equality, meaning the site will eventually be ‘a place for all.’ It’s also important to improve sustainability and resiliency along the waterfront, helping protect the low-lying, once tide-filled city. Finally, there is the financial feasibility of developing such a place as this. Much of The Trustees’ work to date has been based on gifts of existing greenspace with the financial support to maintain them. If the space in Boston doesn’t already exist, we have to create it and be able to maintain it in perpetuity.” To date, the organization has found several regions of interest around Boston’s harborfront, including sites in East Boston and the South Boston waterfront. And, it is not working alone. Several nonprofits are supporting its efforts, including the Barr Foundation, which along with many generous donors has
supported The Trustees’ exploration with a series of planning grants. The City of Boston also supports The Trustees’ efforts; in fact, in 2016, Mayor Marty Walsh released Climate Ready Boston, a report outlining the city’s ongoing initiative to address climate change, particularly as it effects sea level rise and coastal flooding in vulnerable neighborhoods around East Boston and Charlestown. “Right now, we’re focused on securing a site that will become a designed and activated space,” says Black, who notes the scope and splash of the project is intended to be along the lines of Chicago’s Millennium Park, New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Waterfront Toronto. “Once the site is secured, we’re going to engage with communities to determine the best use of the space, with an eye towards recreational, educational, and historical programs and activities.” The idea, Black further explains, is to connect the greenspace to the harbor through natural park edges with coastal landscapes, like rocky shorelines and salt marsh. These natural formations will encourage kids to engage with the space through play, whether climbing amongst tide pools or playing hide-and-seek among the greenery. Programs and activities will engage both young and old, such as sharing information about the ecology of the coastline and the area’s maritime history, particularly around the harbor piers, which used to be the backbone of the Northeast’s shipping industry. Even though none of its 116 reservations are within the city itself, The Trustees has

been closely linked to Boston, and concerned for the wellbeing of its people, throughout the organization’s nearly 127-year history. As the current development boom overwhelms the waterfront, it seems only fitting that The Trustees—the state’s largest conservation and preservation organization—is at the forefront of the effort to protect critically needed future open space in the state’s largest and most populous city. “Our work on this Initiative is a critical and actionable solution that extends the mission for which we were founded,” says Erickson, “and given the impacts of sea level rise and more frequent flooding from destructive storms, it is one we can no longer afford to ignore.” Victoria Abbott Riccardi is a freelance travel, culture, and food writer, and author of Untangling My Chopsticks: A Culinary Sojourn in Japan (Broadway) from Newton.

The annual plant sale at City Natives in Mattapan brings gardeners from all over Boston and neighboring communities.
March really came in like a lion this year; now let it follow suit and go quietly out like a lamb! And where there are lambs, there are certain to be piglets, chicks, calves, and kids—of both the goat and human kinds—as they arrive at our farms with the emergence of spring. Spring brings out the flora, too, of course, and Trustees reservations throughout the state buzz with hikers, gardeners, kite flyers, flower fanatics, and even forest bathers. We’ve got garden tours (see pages 22 & 23), beer gardens (see News from Across the State,) Mother’s and Father’s Day fun, plant sales, lots of great spring “staycation” ideas for the kids (see pages 26 & 27), and much more, all listed in Things To Do, starting on the next page. Whatever facet of the outdoors you’re into, we’ve got plenty of adventures to keep you busy, active—and happy—this spring!
Plant-tastic! Find your favorite annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, or maybe discover a new variety for your garden, at one or more of our annual plant sales over three Saturdays in May. On May 12, venture to Beverly for the 27th Annual Long Hill Plant Sale and pick up some Sedgwick Garden specialties, take part in the silent auction of rare plants, and find some unusual plants as well as old favorites. Or head to City Natives in Mattapan (also on May 12) or the Berkeley Community Garden in the South End (May 19) for organicallygrown native perennials, medicinal herbs, Continued on page 21.

BOSTON
A Season of Garden Tours This year, Trustees is excited to be expanding our walking tours through neighborhoods of Boston, as a new tour through private gardens of Jamaica Plain joins the much beloved South End Garden Tour. Both tours provide funds for the care of the 56 community gardens managed by The Trustees in Boston, including fifteen gardens and pocket parks in the South End and Lower Roxbury, and twelve in JP. Proceeds from the two tours work to improve and maintain the gardens. ©TRUSTEES
The South End: 25th Anniversary Tour The garden gates open in Boston’s South End on Saturday, June 16, for the 25th annual South End Garden Tour. This always popular neighborhood event provides an opportunity to explore some of the South End’s most spectacular private outdoor spaces. Thread through alleys and walkways for a self-guided, behind-the-scenes look at some twenty-five gardens—from intimate, informal, and even quirky spaces designed by area homeowners, to the work of noted urban landscape designers—many of which are open to the public only on the day of this tour. Come celebrate Father’s Day, explore the neighborhood’s hidden corners with friends and family, and be inspired by the gardens created in this dense urban neighborhood. Tickets, and information about supporting the event through advertising or volunteering, are available at thetrustees.org/segt or by contacting Peter Bowne at pbowne@thetrustees.org or 617.869.6720.
Jamaica Plain: Inaugural Tour Modeled after and inspired by the popularity of the South End Garden Tour, Trustees is pleased to present the first annual Jamaica Plain Garden Tour! On Saturday, July 14, come tour private gardens in the Sumner Hill and Central neighborhoods of JP, an area full of charming historical homes with lush gardens. Many of these hidden spaces feature beautiful stonework and water features, as well as unique specimen plants reflecting the historical influence of the Arnold Arboretum in the neighborhood. Garden-owners are looking forward to sharing their spaces with you. To learn more, support the tour through advertising or volunteering, and to purchase tickets, visit thetrustees.org/jpgt or contact Michelle de Lima at mdelima@thetrustees.org or 617.542.7696 x2115.

Grow Veggies like a pro BY GENEVIEVE RAJEWSKI
etting in the daily servings of vegetables recommended for a healthy diet gets a lot more palatable when local crops come into season, inspiring us with their vivid colors, incredible textures, and fresh flavors. While The Trustees offers plenty of opportunities to partake of the local harvest, eating fresh produce gets even more rewarding when you grow your own. To help you improve your bounty, Andrew Lawson—who runs the produce operation for The Trustees’ largest production farm as the CSA manager at Appleton Farms in Hamilton and Ipswich—shares his five tips for ensuring a bumper crop from your yard or community garden plot. 24
THE TRUSTEES
Set Your Site on Success
Choose your location carefully and test the soil. You want a spot that gets full sun and is well-drained. And most importantly, be sure to get your soil tested at the outset and then every several years. Pay a lot of attention to your soil’s pH: New England dirt tends to be very acidic, but thankfully that’s easily remedied by adding lime. A soil test also will reveal your garden’s fertility, which can be improved by adding organic fertilizers (available at gardening centers), compost, or manure.
Ground Your Efforts
Most of your success will depend on whether you prepare the earth in a way that allows plants to flourish. In the spring, work the soil at least 6 inches deep with a rototiller or broad pitchfork. Smooth the soil by raking out any clumps or root balls: You want a finer seed bed, especially if you are direct seeding crops such as carrots, which can get lost in the fray otherwise and up end not germinating. Try not to walk on the garden after you have prepped the soil, as compacted dirt hinders growth.
To Everything, a Season
Some crops grow well in the fall and the spring, when the weather is cooler, and struggle once the summer heat hits. Others will die if there’s a frost and require the warmth of the summer to thrive. Try to sow with the seasons, staggering your plantings for varied harvests over the course of the whole growing season. Cool-weather crops that are easier to grow include head lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, radishes, peas, carrots, beets, and broccoli. In May, plant warm-weather crops like summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, beans, and basil for harvesting in mid-July through mid-September.
Bonus tip!
Pick Your Battles
Don’t try to grow every vegetable there is. Some crops take up a lot of space, but only produce food for a short period of time (so skip the sweet corn, for example). Although heirloom varieties can be delicious, they also tend to be tricky to work with. Stick with the reliable old-standbys: They will supply you with more produce and be just as tasty because you’re eating them fresh out of your garden.
As you follow this advice, don’t forget to let yourself enjoy the process, says Elizabeth Green, Vegetable and CSA Program Manager for The Trustees. “Take time to take in all those wonderful smells and the colors.”
Practice Good Hygiene
There are lots of simple ways to prevent disease, reduce pests, and exclude weeds. Properly space your plants to ensure good airflow. Stake crops such as tomatoes and peas to keep fruit or foliage from touching the soil. Mulch your garden beds with straw, leaves, or landscape fabric. Employ a floating row cover—a thin, white fabric barrier— over greens. Remove spent crops, and once you’re done with part of your garden for the year, cover it with a tarp to make it easier to prepare next spring.
Don’t have the time, space, or green-enough thumb for your own vegetable garden? You can still sign up for a CSA share and support your local farm. For details, visit thetrustees.org/shares Genevieve Rajewski is a Boston-based freelance writer who covers nature, animals, food, and science.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Farm Hands of History One Sunday inside the Old House at Appleton Farms, Sheila Cooke-Kayser had a chance encounter with a rare visitor: a woman who was once Joan Appleton’s personal nurse. “Talking to someone who has a personal connection with a historic place was so interesting, and it made Joan come alive,” she says. Sheila is among 14 volunteer docents who acquaint visitors with the rich past of America’s oldest continuously operating working farm. All the docents are history buffs; they’ve taken museum trips together, and organized book clubs for the likes of Louise Tharp’s The Appletons of Beacon Hill. That homegrown expertise helps them illuminate history’s marginalized voices; Sheila particularly enjoys telling visitors about Francis Appleton’s two daughters. The docents’ enthusiasm is infectious, but it’s also vital. “Having people who are excited to tell the stories is how you get the next generation of visitors excited,” says Marc Mahan, The Trustees’ Volunteer Resources Coordinator for the Northeast Region. “The docents at Appleton Farms exemplify why preserving something forever means preserving the past.” For more, and to meet all the docents, visit thetrustees.org/volunteer. - By Jeff Harder
