Public Art Series Launches This Summer In July, the first of a series of public art installations at Trustees properties will open at The Old Manse in Concord. The inaugural Art & the Landscape exhibition is a site-specific, participatory work by conceptual artist Sam Durant entitled The Meeting House, which focuses on the Sam Durant African presence in colonial and post-revolutionary Concord. The installation includes a structure based on local homes of the first emancipated African men and women in Concord (artist’s rendering, above), which will
offer a unique way to address difficult issues such as slavery and segregation and their continuing impact on today’s society. A series of four events – designed in the tradition of 19th-century lyceums – will engage participants in dialogue about the issues in question. The four-month installation is scheduled to open in early July, and admission is free. A second Art & the Landscape exhibit—A New End by artist Jeppe Hein—is planned for fall at World’s End in Hingham. For more information, visit thetrustees.org/art.

Two New Books Honor Trustees 125th Anniversary Trustees is pleased to announce the release of two new publications in honor of its 125th Anniversary. Charley Eliot and the Knights of the Woods is a delightful children’s storybook, created in collaboration with Paul and Peter Reynolds and their team at FableVision. Imaginatively
recounted, many of the elements of this fictional tale are based on the actual early years of Trustees founder Charles Eliot’s life. And The Trustees at 125: A Commemoration provides an in-depth look at the history of the organization from its founding in 1891 to the present, with an emphasis on the captivating stories of the families whose generosity and foresight led to the saving of so many special places for us all to enjoy. Both books are available for sale at Trustees gift shops across the state.

What’s Old is New Again at Crane After 60 years, the Crane Beach bathhouses have been reborn. While the old bathhouses were a cherished part of the experience at Crane, the structures had become outdated and maintenance problematic. “We got a lot of feedback about wanting to keep the charm and timeless look,” says Peter Pinciaro, General Manager of the Crane Estate, so the fully accessible new bathhouses keep the exposed timber and natural pine paneling look of the old
bathhouses while introducing new elements such as composting toilets (which reduce water consumption by 90%), skylights, and increased capacity in the women’s bathhouse. And the updates at Crane don’t end at the bathhouse door: additional new amenities at the beach include a retail shop and expanded Snack Shack offerings. It’s impossible to improve on Crane Beach itself, but these updates go a long way in improving the Crane experience.
the public interest in Boston’s waterfront. Trustees is one of three organizations to receive funding. Boston is well recognized for its historic and scenic waterfront and harbor; yet, this public treasure has been at the mercy of rapid, and often uncoordinated, parcel-by-parcel development. Barr’s goal is to enable and facilitate progress toward an ambitious, responsible, and actionable waterfront vision that considers the needs of all Boston residents, embraces a long-term view, addresses coastal resiliency, and ensures the protection and stewardship of one of Boston’s most treasured assets. We look forward to providing updates on this project here in Special Places as work advances.

THE TRUSTEES
125 and counting ... And we’re off! Our 125th Anniversary Year jolted forward on May 21 with a literal lunge down the tracks. On May 21, we were honored with a proclamation from Governor Charlie Baker, we welcomed more than 3,500 visitors to nine of our historic houses for special programs, and we ended the evening with a grand celebration with 520 friends at Appleton Farms—that was just the first day. This is just the beginning, as you will discover as you read on. We also continue apace the work of our mission to save iconic places. In the last few months we have added two distinguished reservations to our portfolio—Fruitlands Museum in Harvard and The FARM Institute in Edgartown. While markedly distinct in their character, they both exemplify a spirit of place worthy of the Trustees placard. While it seems simple to write this news, it has been years and months of work, with many hands involved. We will feature both of these properties and their amazing natural and cultural resources as well as the work they each do to engage their constituencies in an upcoming issue. We welcome them into the Trustees family and invite you to explore them this summer as we begin the process. I am very excited for the evening of August 6, when we welcome the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Tony Award Nominee Megan Hilty to Castle Hill for what will be the absolute highlight of our Anniversary celebration. This will be an unforgettable experience for you and your families—a wonderful concert with worldrenowned musicians in a magical setting. I hope to see you there. Also, this summer, we will present for the first time two major public art installations at two of our most recognized sites. These works will inspire the public to see these places in new ways and to attract new visitors to our special places. I also want to invite each of you to participate in Hike125, our challenge to get more people outdoors and moving. Whether you’re a novice or expert, it’s okay, just make it a priority to be in nature more this year.

Two iconic garden masterpieces are restored to their full glory

It all began with a backhoe. “We had to hoist it over the wall with a crane,” says Mark Wilson, Trustees Curator of Collections. The wall in question, a stout fieldstone-and-brick edifice, surrounds the Chinese Garden at Naumkeag, the Choate family estate in Stockbridge. The backhoe, needed to dig out the depleted soil inside, didn’t fit through the entry gates.
by Jane Roy Brown Wilson—who had already overseen the dismantling of the interior walls and water runnels in the stone Chinese temple, as well as the removal of nine 40-foot gingko trees, antique ornaments, and numerous tree peonies and other shrubs—drew the line at taking apart a structure that was perfectly sound. Along with the backhoe, tons of new soil went over the wall after the worn-out dirt came out, plus dozens of new trees and shrubs to replace overgrown, ailing, or vanished plants. “We were able to match replacement plants to the originals, thanks to Fletcher Steele’s fastidious documentation,” Wilson says, referring to the landscape architect who worked with Naumkeag’s last individual owner, Mabel Choate, to design twelve gardens here from 1926 through 1956, when the Chinese Garden 4

Surrounded by massive walls sheltering a hidden courtyard, a collection of authentic Chinese statuary, walking paths, and a stately temple structure, the newly restored Chinese Garden at Naumkeag awaits its first visitors. The Chinese Garden was created to house the Asian artifacts collected by Mabel Choate during her travels and to provide a spiritual oasis. In reflecting on his design, landscape architect Fletcher Steele said, “All of Naumkeag and the landscape beyond will be like the unfolding of a seashell whose nucleus is the Chinese Garden itself.”
was finished. “This garden displays the cultural and horticultural influences of a 1935 trip Mabel Choate made to China,” Wilson says of the final garden to be restored as part of a $2.2 million landscape makeover at the National Historic Landmark. The investment here embodies the goals of Bringing Our Stories to Life, a five-year cultural resources campaign to build technical expertise, support transformative capital projects, and enhance visitors’ experiences by sharing compelling stories from Trustees properties. As described by Cindy Brockway, Program Director for Cultural Resources, “The campaign addresses critical needs at our most significant properties, where, by restoring tangible evidence, we intend to ignite a deeper connection between visitors and the great stories at each property.” Inside the Chinese Garden wall, for example, visitors will experience the space as it looked when new, entirely rebuilt and replanted. “It seems much larger now,” says Wilson. 6

“You can explore it all and see a clear view from the temple to the western hills.” With only two hedges remaining to replant elsewhere, the restoration of Naumkeag’s unique gardens are now complete, and the focus
shifts to rebuilding the greenhouses and parts of the farm that supplied food for the estate. At the other end of the state, Capital Project Manager Robert Murray has been overseeing the restoration of another walled garden, at another National Historic Landmark: Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, in Ipswich. The Italian Garden, finished in 1913 by the Olmsted Brothers firm, is the landscape’s formal showpiece. Though the Olmsted imprint is enough to lend cultural significance to a designed landscape, newly discovered information adds to this garden’s value. “From 1919 to 1934, the veteran horticulturist Robert Cameron shaped the contents of the Italian Garden,” says Brockway. Cameron, trained at Britain’s Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, ran the Harvard Botanic Gardens for 31 years before the Cranes enticed him to be their head gardener. “New research highlights these influential events,” Brockway says. “We spent a lot of time studying the original planting designs,” Murray adds. “We have great documentation—photos, corre-

spondence, plant lists, and plans, which lets us grasp the design intent behind the plant choices.” Brockway also provided context by locating other Olmsted Brothers plans for contemporaneous Italian gardens. Newly restored features of the Italian Garden that benefited from these documents included 120-foot-long double perennial beds, the garden’s pool and fountain, a new grass path, and rebuilt terraces—specifically, the bluestone risers supporting them—which had collapsed because of poor drainage. (The remedy, a crucial piece of the restoration, as it was at Naumkeag: new water pipes.) A timely addition to the staff is horticulturist Benjamin Carroll, part of a new Trustees horticultural specialist team, who will improve stewardship of the garden, deepen the values of the living collections, and develop new programs for the Italian Garden. Building on the Bringing Our Stories to Life campaign’s restorations of Castle Hill’s Grand Allée (2010) and Casino Complex (2014), the Italian Garden’s return to glory will complete a $2.5 million overhaul of the estate’s primary landscape features. Murray takes the campaign’s theme to the next level when he suggests, “We’re bringing this whole property back to life!”

Summer Surprises Try Something New Under the Sun by Katharine Wroth
When you hear “summer,” do you think beaches and ice cream? Those traditional joys are unquestionably part of what makes this season worth the wait. But there’s much more to summer than that—and in this, our biggest summer ever, Trustees is unveiling a boatload of new ways to have fun.
hether you’re an avid hiker who hits the trails every weekend or a young family starting to figure out how to explore together, “we have something for everyone,” says Kristen Swanberg, who oversees public programming at our properties across the state. For the past year, Swanberg has been working with programming staff and volunteers to expand the number and type of events Trustees offers. “We’re trying to take a different spin,” she says, in an effort to encourage more people to embrace nature and to meet growing demand: nearly 150,000 people took part in Trustees programs last year. get outside

Trustees properties offer countless opportunities for outdoor pursuits, like painting en plein air, telling (and re-telling) campfire stories, or even harvesting clams for your supper. continued from page 8
From stargazing to sea kayaking to indulging your artistic side, here are a few examples of fun to be had this summer at Trustees properties around the state. Wellness Walks

Ravenswood Park, Gloucester
Martha’s Vineyard
multiple locations
It’s easy to escape from the heat of summer thanks to the sea breezes that waft through this forested park—and to escape from the routine of hitting the gym. “We’re really trying to help people get off the treadmill and get onto the trail,” says Ramona Latham, who manages programs at the park. Latham has concocted a line-up of fun that also includes family walks, yoga, and a 25-mile bike tour (with a slightly different “wellness” reward ice cream. Yum!)
Summer is the busiest time at this coastal hot spot, but Engagement Site Manager Rebecca Uva says it’s easy to find peace and quiet with The Trustees at Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge and Norton Point. A new slate of events— including sunset kayak tours, moonlight walking tours, and family beach walks— all but guarantees that visitors will see the Vineyard in a whole new way.
If you prefer the artistic to the athletic, check out open studios at the Ames Estate (Easton), paint nights at the Stevens-Coolidge Place (North Andover), botanical drawing at Bartholomew’s Cobble (Sheffield), or plein-air painting at the Bryant Homestead (Cummington).

Mortified! Rocky Woods, Medfield
An evening of games, s’mores, and cringeworthy laughter is in store for this event, which features people reading real stories, letters, and journal entries from their days as young campers. After a visit from this national act, which has been hailed as a “cultural phenomenon,” summer camp will never be the same.
Clam-o-Rama Crane Beach, Ipswich
Dig in for a family adventure unlike any other as you harvest clams, gather wild edibles, and make a meal from what you’ve found. This treasure hunt is just one of many planned at Castle Hill and Crane Beach—from live-action Clue games at SummerQuest camp (sessions available for grades K-10) to a quiet kayak exploration of Fox Creek.

Whatever your summer holds, be sure to plan plenty of time outside. It’s the perfect way, says Ramona Latham of Ravenswood Park, to “get connected with the earth—and with yourself.” Katharine Wroth is a senior writer at Grist and former editor of AMC Outdoors.

To help celebrate our 125th Anniversary, we invite you to log 125 miles (or more!) of hiking our trails through the end of the year. Curiosity Unleashed Share your love of nature with the littles!

for the long-term care and stewardship of our environment as well. It’s easy to introduce young children to the outdoors in a positive, engaging, and fun way—especially if you understand a few simple truths before getting started.
Enthusiasm Is Contagious If there’s only thing you do, it’s this. Get excited! Express your own love and passion and wonder for the natural world. No other single activity, or gadget, or weather, or piece of gear matters more.
“Children follow their parents’ lead,” explains Laurie Nehring, a naturalist at Farandnear in Shirley, who has spent decades introducing children to the outdoors. “If parents model enthusiasm, excitement, and a positive attitude and support kids’ natural curiosity, it’s proven to lead to young adults who care about the environment. There is so much research out there that backs that up.” The Journey Is the Destination The outdoors is a place for kids to be free, to explore and discover, to find their own course through the natural world. Let them. Don’t focus on having a fixed destination for your outings. Instead, remember that the journey itself is what matters for young children. Create space and time and opportunity for them to discover things as they go. An in-depth exploration of something five minutes from the parking lot is often more valuable than a predetermined march that provides little time for spontaneous discovery. “Don’t feel like you have to overly control your child,” Nehring advises. “Don’t worry so much. Let them run. Let them explore. And don’t worry that you have to know everything. Curiosity is more important than specifics, so take time to follow children’s leads and notice things with them. For example, look at colors and animal behaviors, or simply ask them to be quiet for 30 seconds and listen to the sounds around them.” Empowerment Matters Young children generally like to feel empowered and in control, a sentiment that translates into comfort and confidence in exploring the natural world. Feed that feeling by providing them with a small backpack that contains a few simple things—food (a ‘snack

pack’), a small water bottle, and an item or two for exploring such as a bug catcher, binoculars, or compass—and then let them decide when and how they want to use them. Add Fun Activities As Needed A few small items in your pack can provide additional opportunities for fun. “Bring some yarn for kids to tie things they find to a stick,” Nehring suggests, “or make leaf rubbings—all you need is crayons, paper, and a hard surface like a clipboard. Put the leaf under the paper with the bumpy side up and then rub over it with the side of the crayon.”
At Farandnear in Shirley, our new visitor pavilion includes an interactive nature wall filled with hands-on activities to spark curiosity and inspire adventures for kids of all ages.
The Trustees also offers an array of activities and programs throughout the state for families and young children. “There’s so much variety,” Nehring concludes. “You could join one of the many outings with a naturalist or guide, or just head out to a Trustees reservation near you. When it comes to introducing kids to the outdoors, any property is a good one.” Matt Heid is a freelance writer whose work appears regularly in AMC Outdoors. 125th Anniversary Gala More than 500 guests toasted The Trustees big birthday at the 125th Anniversary Gala at Appleton Farms on May 21. Many arrived by vintage rail car from Boston to the specially reopened Appleton Farms Flag Stop. The Commonwealth’s Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Matthew Beaton brought greetings and a proclamation from the Governor, and messages of support were offered by the evening’s dignitaries, including 6th District Congressman Seth Moulton (above, being greeted by Trustees President & CEO Barbara Erickson).

At our annual Home Sweet Home event on May 21, we opened nine of our historic houses for free for the day. House tours were popular all day long, as this line at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton attests, as were the birthday cakes and party crowns like these at Naumkeag in Stockbridge.
Boston Public Library Exhibition 125th Anniversary Co-Chairs gathered at the opening of From the Sea to the Mountains: The Trustees 125th Anniversary exhibition at Boston Public Library’s Leventhal Map Center in April. The exhibit, which highlights 70 items from both the Trustees and the Map Center collections, is free and open through August 28 at the Central Library Branch in Copley Square.

Drawing a Community Together The KITCHEN at the Boston Public Market is a community learning space, programmed by The Trustees, for educating people about food. This modern 3,200-square-foot teaching kitchen presents cooking classes, talks by food experts, and a welcoming place to bring your lunch and socialize. A heaping portion of The KITCHEN’s aesthetic appeal comes from volunteer Sandy Ruffin’s creative contributions. A typical day onsite finds Sandy drawing chalkboard event signs and interacting with the public about class offerings. She also teaches “Impressively Easy,” a class designed to illustrate that cooking is not hard. “I love the people,” says Sandy, “and how it’s different here every day. There are food talks, demo classes, a hands-on station, and a story time when books about food are read to kids.” Sandy appreciates that volunteering for The Trustees has given her an opportunity to both learn and gain experience while supporting the mission of connecting people back to farms and where their food comes from.
