end of campus was truly amazing. People were saying they hadn’t experienced a TSU Homecoming like this in over eight years. We asked for a “Stomp the Yard” experience and that’s what we received. Wednesday evening, various fraternities and sororities were in front of the student center, stepping and dancing to the music of an awesome DJ. The crowds grew larger to acknowledge the homecoming celebration. We asked for our Greek trees back and we got them. We requested for a pep-rally and we got that too. Your evolvement and student interaction taught us that this is not just a livelihood for you, but this is how you choose to show students that you understand what college life is all about. Yes, we know that our education is first and foremost, but in our down time, we should be able to relax and have fun. You not only made sure we had an great homecoming but you joined in on the celebration as well.

Dr. Lane, Students, faculty and staff are all honored to have you serve as our president. We appreciate your presidential performance here at Texas Southern University. Your services and your

The Residents of Cuney Homes and other community members were excited to see TSU homecoming parade back in third ward. It was like it was in the old TSU days, when young children would run down the Cleburne street yelling to others “The band is coming! TSU’s band is coming!” From the moment the drums sticks hit the top of the snare drums and the boom came from the bass drums, you could see the people migrating from their homes coming to rest on Cleburne to enjoy the parade. It was so important for residents of Third Ward to see the changes that you made by bringing the parade back home where it belongs. You’ve filled a void in the hearts of many residents that were left in the shadows after the parade was taken away. TSU is the heart beat of the community. When Texas Southern University stands tall, the community stands tall. Dr. Austin A. Lane, we the students, alumni, faculty, staff and Third Ward residents would like to extend to you our gratitude. TSU and the community want you to know that we honor every moment that you’ve dedicated to taking care of the needs of our great university. We are forever grateful that you turned our Homecoming celebration into a fun felt family reunion. Sincerely, The TSU Family & Community

Cover Story Texas Southern Homecoming “Remember the Times” Revitalizes University Spirit By: Nycole Hutchens Staff Writer

Texas Southern University had its 2016 homecoming “Remember the Times,” bringing in memories, exciting events and a historic parade that left students, alumni and local visitors a lasting Third Ward experience. This year’s homecoming kicked off its first event on October 16th with a Homecoming Worship Service and Gospel concert leading up to a tailgating party ending Sunday, October 22nd. The anticipation and turn out at this year’s homecoming was a comparable mix between a sold-out Beyonce’ concert to an unexpected Destiny’s Child reunion. Celebrity guest appearances featured DJ/HipHop extraordinaire, Doug E. Fresh, hip-hop group “Migos” and Comedian/Actor, Billy Sorrells. Both musical talents delivered to their crowds, respectively. Current students between the ages of 18-25 enjoyed a hyped concert by Migos performing their popular single “Hannah Montana,” which was also a trademark song for the TSU shuffle on campus in 2014.

ners of Tierwester and Cleburne Street and circling around, ending on Tierwester and Blodgett.

The coronation was a night to remember. For the first time in years, TSU hosted a coronation for both “Mr. and “Miss. Texas Southern.” during homecoming week. Mr. and Miss TSU, Moses Mbai and Casandra Cantue looked elegant as they were officially crowned by former Mr. and Miss TSU, Brian Eashman and Channing Briggs.

“This is the best homecoming since nine years. We are back at the campus. Everyone is back in the neighborhood. We love it!” said Dr. Sheri Mitchell, class of ’83 graduate.

The “Grand Tiger” Photo By: Tanuke Smith parade was the most anticipated and memorable event of the year. For the first time in eight years, the parade took place in its historical space right in the heart of Third Ward near Texas Southern. Students and alum shared their sentiments on the parade and overall homecoming event.

“This whole week has been the only time I really felt like I go to a black college,” said Torie Russell, a sophomore at TSU, “I feel like TSU is getting their spirit back.” The homecoming event ended with a tailgating party that lasted from 10p.m. Saturday to 2a.m. Sunday. The tailgate brought in over thousands of alumni and students who enjoyed music, food, Greek stroll offs and more. It was an event that left many students in awe of their HBCU college experience. The homecoming committee collaborated with President Lane and went above and beyond to ensure this year’s event not only left a lasting impression, but set the tone for many future events and reintroduced Texas Southern to the neighborhood.

TSU Football Loses Its Fifth Straight Homecoming Game By: Marcus D. Smith Sports Columnist

With the remaining SWAC schedule, TSU still has an opportunity to face Southern and Grambling, with Arkansas-Pine Bluff in between as a break for the team. As for Southern, their remaining schedule consists of tough opponents such as Alcorn next week, followed by Texas Southern and Prairie View, and they round out the season with Mississippi Valley State and Grambling. If TSU needs Southern to lose three of those games, they would have to defeat them themselves and depend on Alcorn and Grambling to win, hoping that Southern defeats Prairie View.

Homecoming weekend was an eventful one when it comes to the world of sports at Texas Southern University. The Lady Tigers Volleyball team set the tone on Friday with an easy three-set sweep in their match against Jackson St. The next day was Saturday, the homecoming football game that saw an attendance of over 10,000 people at the BBVA Compass Stadium that afternoon. The Tigers fell, 21-13, to Jackson State on a last second interception on the JSU 2 yard line in the fourth quarter. The Tigers struck first in the game, opening up the game with a four-yard touchdown pass from Averion Hurts to Mario Smalls. It was Hurts’ only touchdown pass on the game, as he finished with 105 yards and two interceptions. Kicker, Eric Medina, chipped in to help the Tigers successfully making two field goals. The Tigers were outgained on offense 362-105, as the balanced attack of Jackson State proved to be too much in the end for the Tigers. The game’s turning point came in the beginning of the fourth quarter when Jackson State’s running back, Jordan Johnson, exploded through the gap in the defense and strayed away for a 55 yard touchdown giving JSU a 21-13 lead with 11:15 left in the game. Johnson had ran four times for 78 yards to compliment his score.

Defensively, the Tigers were lead in tackles by Jamal Lucas with nine tackles and Demetrius Johnson with eight. Senior, Ryhean McMorris recorded the only interception on the game for the Tigers. This was an emotional loss for the Tigers, as they saw their homecoming losing streak extend to five seasons. Not only was it the streak, but also the race for SWAC supremacy is now out of the hands for Texas Southern officially. Like Deniece Williams says, “it’s gonna take a miracle,” if the Tigers are in the SWAC race at the end of the season. The back-to-back losses now for the Maroon and Grey have really hurt their chances. At the top of the standings are Louisiana standouts, Grambling State (4-0) and Southern Univerisity (4-0), followed by in-state rival Prairie View (4-1), and then there is Texas Southern who now hold a .500 record (3-3) in the SWAC West Division. Not to say that Mike Haywood and co. can’t make a push towards the big game and continue to persist week after week, but realistically, not only would the Tigers have to win out the remaining three games, but also they would need undefeated teams to lose three straight games. Things are easier said than done, and that is exactly the case.

Grambling State’s remaining schedule consists of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (walk-through game) next week, followed by Alabama A&M and Alabama State, concluding with TSU and Southern for their annual Bayou Classic in New Orleans. Grambling has been dominant this season and it’ll be tough for any team to beat them. Next week, the Tigers will head to Huntsville, Texas to take on the Sam Houston State Bearcats in their homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm at Bowers Stadium. For a live broadcast audio of the football game, listen to KTSU 90.9fm “Your Community Station” for the play-by-play with Texas Southern’s very own, the one and only Larry “the Chatterbox” Hale. Additional information can be found on TSU’s Athletics website, www.tsusports.com.

Lady Tigers defeat Southern 2-1 in overtime Humphrey that Southern goalkeeper Victoria Mendes couldn’t control, less than a minute after the opening whistle of the first overtime. The win improved Texas Southern’s record to 9-6-1, with a 6-1-1 record in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. TSU’s nine wins in 2016 set a new program best for victories in a single season.

HOUSTON – Madison Phillips’ first collegiate goal could not have come at a better time as she booted the match-winning golden goal Sunday as Texas Southern defeated Southern 2-1 in overtime. season in the 42nd minute when she took an accurate through pass from Kailand Thompson into the area and placed a slow kick into the far left corner, just out of Mendes’ reach. Texas Southern drastically limited Southern’s scoring opportunities, as the Lady Tigers outshot their opponents 22-3. The lone shot on goal by Jaguar was Sophia Zavala’s precision kick from 30 yards out that TSU goalkeeper Alexis Robles couldn’t get to.

Sunday’s triumph, coupled with Arkansas–Pine Bluff ’s 1-0 loss at Howard on Sunday, gave the Lady Tigers sole possession of second place on the SWAC table.

After a chippy second half that saw two Southern players sent off, TSU did not allow Southern any more meaningful scoring chances. The playing field advantage forced Southern to merely play for a tie while TSU continued to little Mendes with shots.

TSU will try to clinch the No. 2 seed in the SWAC Tournament when the Lady Tigers host in-state rival Prairie View A&M on Friday.

Sunday’s match was the fifth overtime contest TSU has played in this season. They improved to 2-2-1 in overtime matches, and claimed its first overtime win at home this season.

The loss dropped Southern (3-12) into eighth place in the SWAC with a 3-6 league record.

The Lady Tigers conclude the regular season Friday at home against Prairie View A&M. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alexander Durley Stadium on the TSU campus.

10 Movie quotes that motivate us to be the best version By: Mariea Boyd Life and Style Writer Films have a dynamic energy to change us and show us. They introduce a visual lesson to an enraptured gathering of people that waits in the very cognizance of thought and could possibly mean activity. Whether it’s by moving us to tears or giving us valor to continue onward, a portion of the best motivational supportive gestures can be found on the wide screen. So to energize in whatever you do and wherever you are in life, we present to you these 10 rousing motion picture cites that could change your life.

1. “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” – Gandalf, from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

2. “There’s a wonderful old Italian joke about a poor man who goes to church every day and prays before the statue of a great saint, begging, “Dear saint-please, please, please...give me the grace to win the lottery.” This lament goes on for months. Finally the exasperated statue comes to life, looks down at the begging man and says in weary disgust, “My son-please, please, please...buy a ticket.” - Julia Roberts, Eat. Pray. Love.

6. “Calling someone fat doesn’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter. All you can do in life is try and solve the problem in front of you.” – Cady, from Mean Girls

3. “Some people can’t believe in themselves until someone else believes in them first.” – Sean Maguire, from Good Will Hunting

7. “It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices.” – Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

4. “What we do in life echoes in eternity.” – Maximus, from Gladiator 8. “You know, the ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about death. When their souls got to the entrance to heaven, the guards asked two questions. Their answers determined whether they were able to enter or not. ‘Have you found joy in your life?’ ‘Has your life brought joy to others?’” 5. “We must be swift as the coursing river, with – Carter Chambers, from The Bucket List all the force of a great typhoon, with all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side of a moon” -Shang , from Mulan

9. “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it, or learn from it.” – Rafiki, from The Lion King 10. Do, or do not. There is no “try”. – Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back

Life & Style Start thinking about your summer internship now By: Mahbuba Matovu Contributing Writer While in college, you will hear the words “It’s good for your resume,” a lot when people are trying to convince you to sign up for almost anything. One thing you should try to do while still a college student is score yourself an internship that will give you experience in the profession you see yourself doing after you graduate. While scoring a prestigious internship can be challenging due to the competitiveness, getting an early start will help you know what is required and will give you enough time to gather all the documents requested. A few things to note when looking an internship; Where to find internships Texas Southern University has an entire department dedicated to career placements that helps students in the search for internships, and jobs after graduation. The department usually hosts career fairs, and resume boot camps for students during the semester. If you have no idea where to start looking for an internship, the career services office is your best bet. They will even give you tips on how to search for an internship online. You can find them in the Fairchild building or contact them on 713313-7541 or placementservices@tsu.edu. Talk to your professors Your professor might also be your best bet at scoring your dream internship. Go visit them

during their office hours, take all your projects with you and tell them what careers you’re interested in pursuing. They will give you great advice on what steps to take and where to look or even better, make a call and connect you with someone who they know might hire you. Create a polished online presence With so much reliability on the internet, employers are no longer shy to search for potential employees on websites like LinkedIn. Creating an online professional profile on LinkedIn will not only help employers find you, it will also give them a good look into activities you have been involved in that could increase your chances of being hired. And not only that, some employers will look-up their potential employees online just to see what comes up. So it might help if you cleaned up your social media pages to look more professional. Map-out your internship search Unlike some majors like pharmacy students who simply have the option of becoming pharmacy interns, majors like BusinessAdministration can have a broader range of internship options for students. With multiple sites that offer internship searches, it’s easy to end up with an overwhelming list and not knowing where to start. If you happen to fall in this category, create a list of specific choices of

internships you’d be interested in and specify your search to those choices. Prioritize which internship options you would prefer to help you eliminate internships that you might not be that interested in. Create a calendar Once you decide on which internships to apply for, add them to your calendar and give yourself deadlines to complete any essays or gather supporting documents that you might need in the application process. This will help you keep ahead and avoid last minute panicking. Have a professional voicemail Still on the image clean-up issue, you might want to go back and review your voicemail message too, especially if you haven’t changed it since high school. Make sure it’s short, sweet, clear and professional sounding. Rapping, singing or advice speeches are probably not the best idea. A good example would be, “Hi, you’ve reached the phone of Sarah Johnson. I’m currently unavailable, but please leave your name, number, and a short message, and I’ll return your call soon!” Good luck on your applications.

THE BIGGEST JOKE OF THE CENTURY: A SPOOF OF THE FINAL PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE By: Nikki Luellen Political Columnist SPOOF MODERATOR: We are live to witness the final Presidential showdown in Las Vegas! Grab your popcorn and enjoy the comedy show, The Biggest Joke of The Century. This debate is sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates who only allowed the Democratic and Republican Party to debate because who cares about the Green and Libertarian Party. Moving on, we have broken down the debate into six major issues which are Debt and Entitlements, Immigration, Economy, The Supreme Court, Foreign Hotspots and Fitness to be President. We will not discuss climate change, poverty in the black community, economic disparities, Flint, Michigan, police brutality or the Native American Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, who are fighting against big oil companies, to not build a pipeline through their land. We will not discuss these major issues because, we simply don’t care. Our audience has promised that they will be compliant to this sham debate and they will not boo, cheer or blurt out any tough questions our candidates cannot answer, now on to the debate! SPOOF MODERATOR: Put your hands together as we welcome to the stage the new President of…. excuse me, the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Trump. (Clinton smiles as she’s just deleted her last email from her computer screen. She stares in the mirror admiring her all white Death Row Records suit and winks at herself in the mirror. When she hears, her name called, she slowly slides on her heels, takes a coffee shot and walks out to the stage. Trump stops Clinton before going on stage and invites her to the next billionaire get together event. Hillary takes the card and hands it to her assistant. She plans on attending the event but won’t allow Trump to distract her. Trump cockily smiles and whispers something in a worker’s ear. She slaps his hand away from her private area and slaps Trump with disgust. Trump tells the woman he’s a star and walks on stage with the same suit he had on during the second debate.)

MODERATOR: 1ST TOPIC: THE SUPREME COURT

MODERATOR: 2ND TOPIC: IMMIGRATION

CLINTON: “… I feel strongly that the Supreme Court needs to stand on the side of the American people, not on the side of the powerful corporations and the wealthy. “

MODERATOR: “…Mr. Trump, you want to build a wall. Secretary Clinton, you have offered no specific plan for how you want to secure our southern border…” TRUMP: “…You have thousands of mothers and fathers and relatives all over the country. They’re coming in illegally. Drugs are pouring in through the border. We have no country if we have no border... We need strong borders… One of my first acts will be to get all of the drug lords, all of the bad ones—we have some bad, bad people in this country that have to go out. We’re going to get them out. We’re going to secure the border…we have some bad hombres here, and we’re going to get ’em out.”

FACT CHECK: “The campaign to elect Hillary Clinton for president in 2016 has received more than $6.9 million from lobbyists, bundlers, and large donors connected to the fossil fuel industry.” www.greenpeace.org CLINTON: “For me, that means that we need a Supreme Court that will stand up on behalf

of women’s rights, on behalf of the rights of the LGBT community… I would hope that the Senate would do its job and confirm the nominee that President Obama has sent to them.” TRUMP: “The Supreme Court, it’s what it’s all about. Our country is so, so—it’s just so imperative that we have the right justices… We need a Supreme Court that, in my opinion, is going to uphold the Second Amendment—and all amendments, but the Second Amendment, which is under absolute siege. The justices that I’m going to appoint will be pro-life. They will have a conservative bent. They will be protecting the Second Amendment…They will interpret the Constitution the way the founders wanted it interpreted.”

FACT CHECK: Trump is known for his racist sentiments towards Black and Brown people. During a case called the Central Park 5, Trump wanted five school boys who were Black and Hispanic to get the death penalty even though they were innocent. He took out a full-page ad in the Daily News calling the teen boys, “crazed misfits” and “criminals” The headline of the ad read, “BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!” The link between immigration and crime is also a trumped-up argument, “UC Berkeley criminologist Franklin Zimring says decades of academic research has refuted a link between illegal immigrants and crime…”First generation immigrations of all kinds have extremely low crime rates,” Zimring said. ( www.kpbs.org ) CLINTON: “I have been for border security for years. I voted for border security in the United States Senate and my comprehensive immigration reform plan of course includes border security. But I want to put our resources where I think they’re most needed: getting rid of any violent person. Anybody who should be deported, we should deport them.” (continued on page 11)

Politics THE BIGGEST JOKE OF THE CENTURY: (Con’t from page 10) NARRATOR: The debate continued about the borders argument and then Chris Wallace, the moderator, asked Clinton about her speech to the Brazilian bank in which she stated she would leave the borders open. Clinton said it was an energy discussion and instead of fully explaining herself, she blamed the Russian government for WikiLeaks and said they are trying to spy on the American people and undermine the presidential election.

MODERATOR: 3rd TOPIC: ECONOMY

NARRATOR: The third topic was the economy and Clinton’s plan is to help the middle class with jobs in infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and offer new jobs in clean energy. She wants to help small businesses and raise minimum wage. Trump wants to renegotiate trade deals with other countries and have free trade. He also said he wants to cut taxes on businesses.

deleted emails resurfaced. The debate shifted to Haiti, tax returns and Clinton and Trump attacking each other. No real issues were discussed and each candidate told half-truths, lied and blamed everyone but themselves for not being able to be clear-cut on where they stand on their issues.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE: A REVOLUTIONARY ALTERNATIVE By: Nikki Luellen Political Columnist Despite the media’s whiteout of the Green Party, Dr. Jill Stein and her supporters are still going strong. On October 15, 2016, hundreds of people gathered in Houston, Texas at the Last Corner Café to hear the Presidential Candidate of the Green Party, Jill Stein and local Green candidates speak. Stein spoke about major issues effecting the American people such as immigration, police violence of African Americans, foreign policy, climate change and student debt. Despite the fact that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are the most unpopular candidates in modern history and over 60% disapprove of Trump, while 56% disapprove of Clinton (Socialist Alternative) most people are still unaware that they have a third alternative and feel as though they have no other option than to choose the lesser of two evils. The debate that occurred between Clinton and Trump on October 9th left many people dissatisfied. The debate was centered around Trump’s abuse of women and he defended himself by talking about Clinton’s 33,000 deleted emails. The major issues effecting black people in America such as gentrification, police violence with impunity, mass incarceration and systemic poverty in the black community were

not addressed.

every aspect of their lives.

During the convention, Stein spoke in support of the demilitarization of the police, a community review board for the police, outside independent investigators for police murders and ending the failed war on drugs that was enacted by Bill Clinton and supported by Hillary Clinton. She also spoke in favor of reparations for African Americans.

Though Stein speaks out against racism, poverty, big corporations and wars, some people may think that voting for the Green Party would be a wasted vote because Stein’s chances of winning the election is nearly impossible.

“This is really a national scandal that’s been part of a larger crisis of racism that goes all of the way back to our origins as a slave society…If you grow up without a decent school system, not only does it affect your income and your economic security, your life span is actually reduced by seven years just for living while black…This has to be addressed at every level…We call for a national action plan for racial justice now…We also call for a truth and reconciliation commission…In addition we call for reparations as part of this process so we can heal…It’s not like slavery ended it just transformed, ” said Stein. While other candidates have practically ignored the major issues effecting black people in America, Stein makes it clear what her stance is on the issue of white supremacy and what she plans on doing to deal with the overall issue of racism that affects black people in

If Stein gets at least 5% of the vote, the Green Party will be able to get more funding which will increase the party’s chances of being able to get on the ballot and it will make it easier for Greens to get elected in the local election. To increase her presence with the dissatisfied voters of the major parties and to build momentum around her campaign, Stein will be streaming live every Saturday for a fireside chat with the public that will be available on her YouTube account called Jill Stein For President Booster Club. The Green Party will also host work parties and phone banking. Though voting green may not get Stein elected, it will raise awareness that other parties exist, hopefully end the media’s whiteout of candidates who are not supported by major corporations and finally, show that the American people still have the power over big corporations.
