Beside the Sea
GORGEOUS BEACH VILLAGES HUG THE TWEED COASTLINE, FROM THE URBAN VIBRANCY OF TWEED HEADS IN THE NORTH TO THE SERENITY OF POTTSVILLE BEACH IN THE SOUTH.
Dotted along the Tweed Coast Road and offering almost 40 kilometres of pristine beaches, our seaside towns are distinctive, yet also weave seamlessly into one another as you journey along the scenic stretch from Fingal Head, Kingscliff and Casuarina to Cabarita Beach, Hastings Point and Pottsville. Our coast combines down-to-earth ease with sophisticated chic — from relaxed waterfront holiday parks to luxury stays with a view, and local coffee hangs to awarded dining, there are endless ways to relax into your next Tweed beach break.
7
Fingal & Chinderah
AS THE LONG, STRAIGHT STRETCH OF COASTLINE FROM TWEED HEADS TRACES SOUTH, FINGAL HEAD JUTS OUT TO SEA, POINTING TOWARDS NEARBY COOK ISLAND.
At Fingal Head is a rocky outcrop known as Giant’s Causeway, so named after the similar UNESCO Giant’s Causeway World Heritage Site in Ireland, which was formed by lava flows halted by the cool ocean, resulting in rock pillars that rise like steps to a peak with views clear out to the horizon. For the local indigenous people, Fingal Head is known as Booninybah, said to mean ‘home of the giant echidna’, with the volcanic columns resembling an echidna’s spiny covering. In tranquil Fingal, you’ll also find fun surf breaks, laid-back fishing spots, chilled eateries and caravan and camping options close by.
Nearby Chinderah is a restful riverside getaway, just a stone’s throw from the beach and ideal for a bit of R&R for those who like to take it easy on holiday. Set on the banks of the Tweed River, your Chinderah holiday to-do list could include relaxed boating with a fishing rod, SUP or kayak paddling, slow walks along the winding river, 18 holes at the local course, browsing and buying antiques with a marine theme, lazy picnics in the park, fish and chips in the sun and good cheer at the local tavern overlooking the water.

Cook Island Aquatic Reserve
KNOWN BY THE PEOPLE OF THE LOCAL BUNDJALUNG NATION AS JUNGARNGAHRIYAHN (JOONG-URRA-NARRIAN), SAID TO MEAN ‘PELICAN DANCE’, COOK ISLAND HAS ALSO BEEN KNOWN AS TURTLE ISLAND AND CONTINUES TO BE A SANCTUARY FOR BIRD AND MARINE LIFE TO THIS DAY.
One of only 13 aquatic reserves in New South Wales, Cook Island Aquatic Reserve is around 600m off shore from Fingal Head and comprises 80 hectares of protected marine area, which nurtures fish habitats and threatened species, conserves marine biodiversity and supports research and education.
9
Formed by lava flows from a vast shield volcano over 20 million years ago, the island has both hard and soft corals, with boulders forming walls and caves descending to the sandy sea floor. It’s thought that Cook Island, Julian Rocks near Byron Bay and the Solitary Islands further south, are a kind of ‘stepping stone’ pathway for tropical marine species moving up and down along the coastline. Arguably the stars of the show are the resident green sea turtles, ever-present in and around the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve and best encountered on an organised snorkelling tour out from Fingal Head, with sightings possible all year around. Temperate, subtropical and tropical species of fish, crustaceans and molluscs are also abundant in the complex rocky reefs of Cook Island, which also accommodates nesting seabirds, seeking a calm place to birth and raise their young.
As a safe harbour, Cook Island and its surrounding reserve provide habitat and resource for countless marine animals, including pufferfish and clownfish (hi Nemo!), as well as nudibranchs, stingrays, wobbegongs and even leopard sharks over summer. Several threatened or protected species are also found in the reserve, including the giant Queensland grouper, black rockcod, gold spotted rockcod and the grey nurse shark. Cook Island is a popular base for aquatic tours, with snorkelling trips available to explore the island’s marine life, along with scuba diving, boating, snorkelling and whale watching in season (fishing is not permitted within the reserve). Cook Island itself is a nature reserve with recreational use not permitted. For more details head to the Department of Primary Industries’ website. VISITTHETWEED.COM.AU

ASK A LOCAL Laura Proctor, General Manager — Halcyon House I moved from Brisbane to the Tweed nearly eight years ago with my family after my husband relocated here for work. I noticed construction at what is now Halcyon House and was intrigued as to what was happening. A few years later I commenced at the hotel working closely with former General Manager Mauro de Riso who has been a huge influence on where I am today. The Tweed has come a long way in the short time I have been here. I enjoy riding to Hastings Point and Kingscliff with my family, exploring the local waterfalls including Minyon Falls and Killen Falls, and spending time on the Tweed River. The Tweed is so diverse and offers unlimited opportunity for exploring. There is always something to do here!
13
EXPLORE: I recently had lunch at Tweed River House in Murwillumbah. What an amazing experience that was, meeting the owners and hearing about the building’s history was a true insight. SIP: One can never go past a cocktail in the afternoon on the grass at Husk Distillers soaking in the gorgeous surroundings. EAT: Rather biased, but I adore Jason Barratt’s Wagyu and Rosemary Skewers with a glass of Halcyon Days Nero d’Avolo at Paper Daisy. DO: Currently my Sunday morning is spent at Nippers on Cabarita Beach with the family. We love the beach and enjoy the community here. Following that we usually have lunch somewhere local and then catch up with friends and family.

Weddings and romantic holidays for two are also well catered for. Accommodation in Cabarita ranges from beachview apartments to stylish boutique luxury and gorgeous luxe glamping close to the sea.

ASK A LOCAL JAMES AND EMILY, Black Drop Cafe James and Emily moved from regional Victoria to the Tweed five years ago. Having worked in hospitality for nearly 15 years they were ready to open their own cafe, landing in seaside Pottsville. Given its location, Black Drop Cafe attracts beautiful morning light, as well as sandy feet, through its doors and occasionally the couple can take a cheeky lunchtime dip in the creek. Chef Andy Mac works wonders in the kitchen creating a beautiful seasonal menu and sweet treats for the cake cabinet. EXPLORE: We love getting in the car to explore the Northern Rivers hinterland. There are so many wonderful waterfalls and swimming holes to discover. SIP: The new and exciting Brooklyn Tasting Room in Burringbar is intimate, local and has so much on offer. You can grab a bottle for later too! It’s also really nice to share a bottle of fizz on the deck of Tweed Regional Gallery with friends after checking out the latest exhibition. EAT: For the best burger you’re likely to sink your teeth into, look out for JR’s Smokehouse BBQ events at Keith’s in Murwillumbah. The DJ and beer helps too! We also love to grab a cheeky bite to eat at Black Drop! SHOP: Murwillumbah Farmers Market — live music, fresh produce, fun times. We love grabbing some delicious cheese from Deb Allard (Cheeses Loves You) for a little picnic somewhere. DO: We love that the best things to do in the Tweed are also free! We spend our spare time either at the beach or the Pottsville creek. We also love hitting Hastings Point headland from July to October to watch the whales meander by.

Go with the River Flow
FLOWING FROM THE SEA AND WEAVING ITS WAY INLAND BESIDE TOWNS BOTH PEACEFUL AND VIBRANT, THE MIGHTY TWEED RIVER IS A STUNNINGLY EXPANSIVE WATERWAY INVITING EXPLORATION AT EVERY TWIST AND TURN IT TAKES.
Where better to start your journey from coast to country than along the expansive stretch of the Tweed River, as it flows from a small ocean inlet at Tweed Heads, between Duranbah Beach and the northern tip of Fingal Head, crosses paths with the Rous and Oxley Rivers, and curves its way through the green towns of the valley and beyond. Stretch out, breathe in and feel invigorated by a little river exploration at your own pace, from bustling Tweed Heads to peaceful Tumbulgum and onwards to Murwillumbah.

ASK A LOCAL LEE EYRE, Owner — The Oyster Shed & Catch-a-Crab For more than 30 years, Lee and Rob Eyre, together with son Matt, have owned and operated the iconic Catch-a-Crab river tour, a favourite with families and groups, and also for international visitors, until COVID-19 hit in 2020 and forced the family to rethink everything. Harnessing their oyster farms on the Tweed River, Lee and family set about re-inventing their boatshed space to emerge as a rustic and welcoming seafood mecca, The Oyster Shed, overlooking Terranora Lakes, just 100 metres from their oyster lease. Serving their own Sydney Rock Oysters, local fresh seafood as well as cold beer, hand-picked wines and tropical cocktails, Lee and family call this their ‘salty’ version of a paddock-to-plate Tweed food experience. Explore: Cove at Cabarita Beach has been a favourite for a long time, and the nearby headland is perfect for whale-watching during winter, too. Sip: With a menu of margaritas, mojitos and martinis right by the beautiful Tweed River... why — The Oyster Shed of course! (seriously!) Also love Cudgen’s Earth Brewery for a cold beer — or two. Eat: I go back to Potager Kitchen Garden at Carool time and time again. Small and special, it’s my favourite dining space with an ever-changing menu of seasonal local produce. Shop: I could get lost at Bowerbird Emporium in Murwillumbah — unique, eclectic, beautiful homewares and gifts. Do: Pick a beach (any beach!) for a long, relaxed walk, followed by lunch or coffee at a Kingscliff cafe — try Choux Box!

Tweed Heads
THE REGION’S NAMESAKE IS AN IDEAL COMBINATION OF FISHING AND RIVER CRUISING, WORLD-FAMOUS WAVES AND AN EVOLVING CAFE CULTURE.
Duranbah Beach may be less than 200 metres in length, but the break-wall of the Tweed River at the southern end forms a nice right-hand wave, loved by surfers from all over. If you’re staying out of the water, head to Point Danger, a natural amphitheatre that invites holiday-goers to take in sweeping vistas. Heading in from the coast, the stunning Tweed River plays host to peaceful cruise tour opportunities, or you can hire a boat to track

your own river path. Throw in a line for bream, flathead or jewfish (note there is a recreational fishing fee in NSW). Tweed Heads sits on the northern border of New South Wales and is often referred to as Twin Towns with Coolangatta (on the Queensland side). There’s a choice of shopping from boutique to national clothing brands and a constantly evolving cafe and dining scene, serving up barista coffee and food both fresh and delicious.
Tumbulgum
ROLLING OFF THE TONGUE AS TUMBULGUM, THIS TWEED RIVER TOWN IS SIMPLY GORGEOUS.
Arching around the shoulders of the river, Tumbulgum is where the Tweed and Rous Rivers intersect, and is said to take its name from a local indigenous word for ‘meeting of the waters’. Tumbulgum has a tucked-away, timeless ambience, set back quietly from the main road and opening up to surprise first-time visitors with its picturesque setting. Try the ready bustle of cafe fare or heritage pub vibe at the local tavern.
Jump on board a cruise to really take in the grandeur and beauty of the river system, spot myriad birdlife and see Wollumbin Mount Warning from a new vantage point. For the more active, hire a SUP or kayak to navigate these ancient waters. Visitors to Tumbulgum can take things at their own pace, with a simple picnic and spot of fishing or a gin and rum distillery tour at the stunning Husk Distillers, home to the famous and tasty Ink Gin, creating a holiday vibe that’s just perfect for the moment.

START YOUR VALLEY VISIT BY DISCOVERING OUR REGION’S EVOLVING HISTORY, LOCAL CULTURE AND FASCINATING STORIES AT THE TWEED REGIONAL MUSEUM IN MURWILLUMBAH, ITSELF HOUSED IN A STUNNING HERITAGE BUILDING, STANDING PROUDLY SINCE 1915.
Fresh organic food-stores, hip lunch spots, local fashion boutiques, esteemed galleries and new hotels and restaurants are creating more reason to visit this bustling hub that has evolved around the winding waters of the Tweed River. Be enthralled at M|Arts Precinct, a combination space that celebrates art and its makers. Starting life as a 1955 car showroom, the precinct today is a vibrant space for artists and creatives to make, show and sell their work out of modified shipping containers and colourful stores. Another treasured art deco space, the Regent Cinema, is also part of the precinct, recently refurbished and home to arthouse films, travelling festivals and must-see movies. A short journey from central Murwillumbah can take you to other worlds at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre. Set high with
sweeping green valley views, the Gallery hosts thoughtfully curated exhibitions, from national touring shows to local artist showcases, along with the permanent Margaret Olley Art Centre, a breathtaking homage to one of Australia’s most loved artists. The meticulous re-creation of Olley’s famous home studio in Sydney, relocating more than 20,000 original items, is a striking celebration of her life and work, as are the Margaret Olley Memorial Gardens, a tranquil final resting place for the artist. For more holiday inspiration while in Murwillumbah, be sure to visit our helpful volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre — and be sure to view The Green Cauldron Panorama, a remarkable sixteen-metre long wrap-around artwork that transports viewers on high for 360 degree views over the caldera. ASK A LOCAL JEFTE & JOEY JUAREZ, Mercado Juarez | Doña Cholita Mercado Juarez, a takeaway Mexican taqueria in Burringbar, was started by husband and wife duo Jefte and Joey Juarez (also the duo behind Doña Cholita totopos, tortillas and more) together with Mexican chef, Jorge Fernandez. After meeting in Mexico and moving together to Burringbar, the couple were unable to find ‘a tortilla that tasted like a tortilla’ so began making their own from scratch, reimagining the flavours of Jefte’s childhood from Australia’s first solar-powered tortilleria. Doña Cholita (named after Jefte’s grandmother) products are now found in stores all over Australia, still made in the same small-batch way in Murwillumbah with 100% natural and organic ingredients. Each Friday, the flavours of Mexico come to life out of Mercado Juarez, with a menu of take-away tacos, tortillas, quesadillas and nachos, enjoyed in the local park with chilled live tunes, fairy lights and fun for the whole family. EXPLORE: We love taking the kids and walking the fire trails, they are great bushwalks and often in very hidden places. SIP: Brooklyn Tasting Room in Burringbar sells the best wine! And Lolitas Cantina in Casuarina do a perfect margarita (they also do great tacos). EAT: Elwood in Burringbar for coffee and bagels (the blueberry bagel makes me happy), Mercado Juarez in Burringbar for tacos that take us back to Mexico (yes, we eat at our own takeaway every week!) and JuJu’s in Murwillumbah for breakfast. SHOP: Murwillumbah Farmers Market every Wednesday, the freshest, most delicious produce. Bowerbird Emporium in Murwillumbah for cute presents and gorgeous bits for your house. DO: Friday sunsets in Materson Park in Burringbar, it’s such a beautiful chilled location, local musicians usually have a jam and we get to hang out and eat tacos while the kids run around with their friends. It’s our weekly social catch up with a total fiesta vibe.

Uki, Burringbar & Stokers Siding
THE TWEED VALLEY IS A HINTERLAND TOURING DREAM, DOTTED AS IT IS WITH SMALL TOWNS OF BIG CHARACTER, FOUND ALONG COUNTRY ROADS WITH STUNNING GREEN VIEWS AROUND EVERY CORNER.
Nestled at the foothills of Wollumbin Mount Warning, Uki is a place where community spirit hums and visitors can ease into a calm but connected pace of life. It’s where village markets sell local food and crafts from an old Buttery and the School of Arts and nearby galleries proudly show the works of resident artists. It’s where lunch comes with a mountain vista, and art and coffee, along with postal services, are viewed and brewed in a historic post office building. There are famous local pies and a much loved, sprawling country pub, a colourful fair trade shop, mid-century retro furniture store, live music and cafe choices, healing retreats and day spas and luxury accommodation set in lush rainforest spaces.
Just a short and pretty drive from Uki, heading east along the gently undulating Smiths Creek Road, you’ll find Stokers Siding and Burringbar. Stokers’ enterprising past as a thriving farm and rail town was recast when trains no longer stopped here. Instead, a tree-change community found the area for its tranquillity; a well-known pottery was established and rainforest retreats took the place of farms and industry. Stop here to browse local art in the old pottery space. Nearby in small and beautiful Burringbar is quintessential country life — tall, green trees and hand-crafted cheese from local dairy farms; laden roadside fruit stalls; a warm cafe on the main street, Broadway, plus the biggest vintage store for miles, Heath’s Old Wares; an eclectic wine tasting room and mouth-watering Mexican food; and the kind of stand-still serenity you feel long after you’ve left.

All this peace prepares you well for the conscious living energy of Tyalgum, boasting so many enterprises it will take some time to explore all that awaits on Coolman Street. If you need more time (always a good idea), there are gorgeous places to overnight here, from heritage homes and farmstays to campsites and nearby rainforest retreats. Stroll between colourfully stocked gift and vintage stores, packed book shelves and jewellery handmade from fossicked stones to earth-conscious shops, beautiful clothing boutiques and good-looking garden wear.

If all this browsing and buying leaves you hungry, head to Flutterbies, serving satisfying morning teas and sumptuous meals in an elegant heritage building or under dappled light in the gardens. You’ll also happen upon a gin bar, coffee roaster, bakery, beer brews and Friday night artisan pizzas served with a side of live music. There’s more too — a general store stocked with local foods, plants and a tasty eat-in menu, stunning seasonal garden tours and events right throughout the year, celebrating creativity, wellness, music, dance, sustainable living, theatre and more. Take time in your Tweed visit to be impressed by gorgeous Tyalgum in the heart of the green caldera.

A Taste for the Tweed
GOOD FOOD IS A WAY OF LIFE IN THE TWEED. WE GROW IT, HARVEST IT, PREPARE IT AND SHARE IT. OUR PLENTIFUL FARMS REAP FRESH FOOD ALL YEAR ROUND, FOUND ON MENUS IN AWARDED RESTAURANTS AND RELAXED CAFES.
The innate richness of soil, sunshine and rainfall mean that seasonal produce thrives here and, when paired with skilled and passionate local chefs, the flavours of our region come to life.
And it’s not just food we do well, it’s coffee, teas, beer, gin, rum and juices. Whether it’s calming, celebrating, cleansing or quenching, we’ve got your thirst needs covered!
From hinterland crops and pastures, we’re blessed with the freshest of fruit and vegetables, dairy milk and creamy cheeses, grass fed meats and free ranging chook eggs. From the sea and our myriad waterways are sourced both salt and freshwater fish, mud and spanner crabs and oyster farms growing in deep inlet beds.
Grown here is the family-owned Madura Tea, Australia’s only subtropical tea plantation with 250,000 tea bushes at nearby Clothiers Creek. From on-farm sugar cane fields comes Australia’s first Agricole rum made by Husk Distillers, also makers of popular Ink Gin. And, with its roots in Byron Bay and a brewing plant located in the Tweed, Stone & Wood beer is also made here.
Carefully grown and tended, our local fare is served up as ready-to-go bites, take-home goods and in restaurants that range from relaxed to refined. Fish and chips to fine seafood, vegan and vegetarian, bush tucker inspired tastes to global flavours, and cheery pubs to chef hatted restaurants, there’s a taste of everything for everyone across the Tweed.
57
Across our inland towns and along the coast, there’s also a constantly evolving coffee culture and a focus on healthy foods and fresh juices. Baristas are making their mark out of hip boltholes and spaciously designed spaces are serving up wholesome food bowls, turmeric lattes and sustainably caught fish dishes.

Art Spaces& Creative Makers
INSPIRED BY THE ABUNDANCE OF GOOD LIFE IN THE TWEED, CREATIVE PEOPLE HAVE FLOCKED TO LIVE AND VISIT HERE FOR MANY YEARS, MAKING WORKS OF ART THAT TELL STORIES OF THE REGION AND ITS PEOPLE.
With so many makers and musicians, performers and teachers living and creating here, it’s easy to get a fix of the arts, whether viewing, learning or purchasing a take-home piece. Our signature space, the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre, delivers constantly changing inspiration in its six exhibition spaces that showcase local artists, travelling exhibitions and significant art awards and prizes. It also has a gorgeous Gallery Shop, research library, inviting cafe and the Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence Studio. A must for visitors to the Gallery is some time spent in the Margaret Olley Art Centre (MOAC) and Memorial Gardens, a tribute to one of Australia’s most-loved artists, known for her paintings of still life and interiors, who grew up in the NSW Northern Rivers region. 61
In Murwillumbah, housed within an industrious and eclectic hub known as M|Arts Precinct, is a spectrum of artists who are making, showing and selling their work out of re-purposed shipping containers. There are creative workshops on offer, art supplies on sale and filmic inspiration at the iconic art deco Regent Cinema. From coast to countryside, you’ll also find an array of small but impressive galleries popping up, celebrating the works of talented local artists from painters and ceramicists to jewellers and print makers. Take in live music across the region from regular bands at the Kingscliff Beach Hotel to national and international touring performers at Twin Towns in Tweed Heads. Be sure to mark our arts and music events in your calendar, from the Murwillumbah Arts Trail each May to the long-running Tyalgum Music Festival in September.
ASK A LOCAL ERIKA TAYLOR, Tweed Regional Museum Erika Taylor grew up on the Northern Rivers but her career in curation has taken her to some of the largest history and science museums in Australia. Returning home in 2012, she continued her passion for museums by joining the Tweed Regional Museum, playing an integral part in its transformation over the past decade. Erika has curated many history and science exhibitions for the Museum, including the recent award-winning projects Land|Life|Culture and Small Town Queer. Explore: We’re surrounded by ancient history in the Tweed — evidence of the volcano that was alive with lava 23 million years ago can be found all over the Shire. One of my favourites is the basalt columns at the Giant’s Causeway at Fingal Head, caused by cooling lava such a long time ago. The Aboriginal cultural significance of that area makes it one of the most special places on earth. Sip: My secret sip tip is to try the old school milkshakes at the Austral Café. I also love Keith in Murwillumbah for coffee and they stock a unique range of organic wine, shrubs and alcoholic kombucha. Eat: Mercado Juarez in Burringbar for community vibes on a Friday night. A local secret is Pita Line in Murwillumbah — it’s a commercial bakery but every lunch time they sell a handful of fresh, delicious pitas covered in za’atar on a table outside the bakery. Shop: I’m naturally a sucker for old things and Heath’s Old Wares in Burringbar is an absolute treasure trove you can get stuck in for hours. I love a bit of midcentury modern and adore Roost and Kush interiors in Murwillumbah. Do: My husband and I love creating our own foodie day tours of the area — the Tweed is packed with a huge number of really unique food and drink producers.

ASK A LOCAL RHETT BRAMBLEBY, Marine Discovery Centre Hastings Point has always been significant for me. My earliest memories are exploring the rocky shore, beaches and mangroves with my Dad and siblings. My father, Ted, would bring us here for holidays. Years later I moved here with my partner and two daughters and we found a little place at Burringbar. After working as an aged care nurse I joined Dad, who was running a coastal education centre with biology camps for schools. I now run my own business called Wild n Awake and work with the North Star Holiday Resort team to develop and run nature-based learning and adventure programs in their Marine Discovery Centre. Explore: When not exploring ecosystems at Hastings Point I take off into the mountains and rainforests to the west. The Border Ranges NP is a favourite. The views from places like The Pinnacle or The Blackbutts lookouts are magnificent. Sip: I’d have to say coffee. Sometimes a large coffee in the morning can last all day if I sip it. Eat: One of our favourite dinners at home is getting fresh, warm pocket bread from the Lebanese bakery in Murwillumbah and adding home-made tabouleh, fried falafel, local hommus, yoghurt and jalapenos — delicious. I also love the food at Izakaya Potts Japanese restaurant at Pottsville – beer on tap too! Shop: I always like a wander through the markets in the area. The Uki Buttery and Bazaar, every third Sunday, has an interesting selection of stalls and talented local musicians. The Murwillumbah Farmers Market every Wednesday morning is a great way to select fresh food grown in this region. Do: One of my other passions is music and songwriting. I’m in an originals band and we play around the area and sometimes at local markets — so look out for us, ‘Wall of Love’. 73

Hike one or more of our many national park tracks or take a run along endless sandy stretches that follow the beautiful coastline. You can choose to eat healthy, fresh foods with low miles just about anywhere in the Tweed and especially at restaurants supporting our local producers and at working farms serving just-picked goodness on their cafe menus. Connecting with Bundjalung country From indigenous sacred sites dating back many thousands of years to volcanic flows that have shaped our valleys and mountains, the Tweed’s aquatic spaces and landscapes provide a place for native animals and hold incredible stories from a time long past. Our salt waters are teeming with marine life, from green and loggerhead turtles, dolphins and whales in season, along with countless fish species, nudibranchs, rays, eels and octopus. Many of these call the small volcanic outcrop of Cook Island home, just off Fingal Head and declared an Aquatic Reserve in 1998. The mighty Tweed River flows from the valley to the sea and winds through the hinterland. Cruising the river is a scenic way to take in new views and learn more about this powerful waterway.

Home to the distinctive Wollumbin Mount Warning, a remnant central vent of an ancient volcano, Wollumbin National Park is a place of great sacred significance to the Bundjalung indigenous people. Said to mean ‘cloud catcher’ in local indigenous language, the peak of Wollumbin rises to a towering height of 1,157m above sea level and is a much-loved landmark by photographers and artists Note: A closure of the Wollumbin Summit track is in place at the time of publication until the end of March 2022 (minimum). This is due to COVID-19 social distancing requirements, subsequent public safety risks, and to allow consultation with the Aboriginal community and other key stakeholders regarding the future management of this site. For up-to-date advice on visiting Wollumbin National Park, please go to nationalparks.nsw.gov.au Looking for an instagram moment? The Panorama DIVERSE, COMPACT AND BEAUTIFUL, THE TWEED IS AN IDEAL REGION TO EXPLORE AT AN EASY PACE, DRIVING FROM BEACHSIDE TO RIVER AND NEARBY HINTERLAND.
Call into the Visitor Information Centres at Tweed Heads, Kingscliff or Murwillumbah for more detail on the many experiences, travel routes and places to stay across the region and to get some expert local help to map out your ideal Tweed holiday. While exploring the valley, be sure to call in and have a chat with our friendly volunteers at the Murwillumbah Visitor Information Centre, also home to the spectacular 16-metre-long artwork known as The Green Cauldron Panorama. Surrounding the viewer to evoke a 360 degree birds-eye view, this remarkable work of art was completed in 2012 by Caldera Wildscapes, a collective of creatives, led by principal artist Andy Reimanis, who all had a hand in creating this geographically true painting that captures the vastness of the caldera as well as the smaller details, such as the various birdlife species native to the Tweed.

ASK A LOCAL DOROTHY TOLLETT & JANIS BANKS, Volunteers — Kingscliff Visitor Information Centre Many holiday-makers will find their way during a stay to one of the Tweed’s Visitor Information Centres, found in Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and Murwillumbah, to get local tips on what to see and do. Our passionate team of volunteers are your local holiday experts and, for many of them, the experience of learning more about where they live and sharing this with visitors is a pure joy. Lots of friendships have also been forged through volunteering at the info centres, such as the connection between Dorothy Tollett and Janis Banks, who share a shift at the Kingy VIC. DT I joined the Kingscliff Visitor Information Centre as a Volunteer about four years ago, drawn by giving back to the community and sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. JB I’m semi-retired and moved to the Tweed nine years ago, from across the border at Broadbeach, and also volunteer my time with Friends of the Pound, helping to find cats and dogs their forever home. Explore: DT I love the drive to Tyalgum and a visit to Flutterbies Cottage Café for sumptuous scones and tea. JB For a day out, I’ll sometimes take a drive to nearby Mullumbimby’s Crystal Castle — it’s always enchanting and spiritual. Sip & Eat: DT The Oyster Shed for lunch or dinner on Friday or Saturday is a must, with views over the Tweed River (be sure to book!), as well as Tweed Valley Farmhouse Cheeses in Burringbar, to taste cheese, sip champagne and learn how each different cheese is made. JB Tweed Valley Whey Farmhouse Cheeses is top of my list too, for refreshments and time with family and friends. Right near our Kingscliff Info Centre by the beach, Zinc is a convenient pop-up that serves great coffee and wonderful treats. I also like to grab fresh sushi and find a relaxing Tweed River-side spot on the grass. Do: DT My favourite way to start each day (at 6am) is taking my dog for a walk with my friend Carol and her two pooches. We trek the hills and enjoy the views and fresh air, and the pooches love the freedom to run freely in off-leash areas. JB Depending on the weather, I also love to be outdoors — gazing at the wonderful ocean with tons of fresh air all around, cycling or strolling. Otherwise, Kingscliff Cinema or Hoyts Tweed always have a good flick between them!
