Discover history at the Tweed Regional Museum and meet creative makers at M|Arts Precinct. Head to the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre for national touring shows, local artist showcases and the breathtaking Margaret Olley Art Centre, a must-see homage to one of Australia’s most-loved artists. It’s a calm country drive to Tyalgum, passing paddocks of dairy cows and curving alongside the Oxley River. In town, browse well-stocked gift and vintage stores, packed bookshelves and jewellery hand-made from fossicked stones. Along the winding Rous River, Chillingham and nearby Crystal Creek are set in dense, verdant rainforest, creating a perfect backdrop for luxurious lodgings and restorative escapes. Nestled at the foothills of Wollumbin Mount Warning, Uki is a small village with a big focus on creativity, wellness and good food. Visit local markets in the old Buttery and see resident artists’ work at the School of Arts. Exhale at healing retreats and luxury accommodation in lush rainforest spaces. Uki is where lunch comes with a mountain view and both art and coffee, along with postal services, are on offer in an historic post office. With a tucked-away, timeless ambience that’s instantly calming, you’ll find Tumbulgum, said to come from a local indigenous word for ‘meeting of the waters’, right where the Tweed and Rous Rivers intersect. Take a boat cruise with Tweed Escapes to see Wollumbin Mount Warning from a new perspective and spot myriad birdlife or hire a SUP or kayak to navigate the ancient waters. In small and beautiful Burringbar you’ll find quintessential country life – tall, green trees and hand-crafted cheese from local dairy farms, laden roadside fruit stalls, a cute cafe on the main street, Broadway, serving fresh brewed coffee and irresistible cakes, a tasty taqueria, the biggest vintage store for miles and the kind of stand-still serenity you still feel when you’re back home.

DAY 1 Cudgen, Carool, Tumbulgum
Start your country drive well-fuelled and head straight to Farm & Co in Cudgen for a nutritious breakfast starring just-picked organic produce. Take time to stroll around the farm’s abundant crops, meet its menagerie of beloved animals and marvel at the insta-popular sunflower field (check ahead for bloom season!). Head towards the Tweed River and take some time to explore the sweet town of Tumbulgum. It's a short drive from here across the river to nearby Husk Distillers for lunch and a distillery tour to learn how their famous Ink Gin and rums are made. Note: there are generous tastings so be sure to designate a driver before the tour begins! Journey on and take a scenic drive via Bilambil Road to experience Potager – A Kitchen Garden, set on a lush 10 acre farm in picturesque Carool and the perfect spot for an early dinner. Check opening days ahead of your trip. Take a short drive to rest up overnight at Origin House @ Zeta’s Coffee, a working coffee plantation where you can also learn more about the process of crop-to-cup coffee.
DAY 2 Murwillumbah, Chillingham, Tyalgum, Uki
For a tasty start to the day, order from the morning menu at JuJu’s or Ben's Patisserie in Murwillumbah. If your visit is on a Wednesday, be sure to visit the weekly Murwillumbah Farmers’ Market to stock up on delicious local foods before taking the Numinbah Road west towards Tyalgum. En route, don’t miss Buck’s Farm in Chillingham, home to native and exotic fruits. Vibrant Tyalgum at the foothills of Wollumbin Mount Warning has a big heart and equally big reputation for mouth-watering high teas at charming Flutterbies. There’s also a gin bar, wood-fired pizza, patisserie, coffee roastery and sweet boutiques to browse in La Marketta. Get your fill then follow the winding Oxley River back along Tyalgum Road towards Bray Park, turning south to Uki. Turn onto Mount Warning Road (taking its name from the majestic Wollumbin Mount Warning) before checking in to Mavis’s Kitchen and Cabins for the night. Dine at Mavis’s Kitchen (check opening times) or take a short drive to the iconic Mount Warning Hotel in Uki, open daily for dinner.
DAY 3 Uki, Burringbar, Duranbah and Cudgen
Take breakfast at your lodgings or in town at one of Uki’s friendly cafes. Time your visit for the weekly Uki Produce Markets, held each Saturday, to stock up on ready-to-eat treats or take-home tastes. Head along scenic Smiths Creek Road towards Stokers Siding and take a right on Stokers Road to arrive at the small and serene town of Burringbar, where a fossick at Heath’s Old Wares and Collectables will ready you for the cosy welcome at Elwood Cafe, a few steps down the road. Not far from here is Tweed Valley Whey Farmhouse Cheeses, where you can taste and buy artisan cheeses, sip milkshakes and try gelato, all made with milk from their happily pastured herd. Returning to Duranbah via Pottsville Road and the M1, head via Duranbah Road to Tropical Fruit World for a plantation tour then quench your thirst at Earth Beer Company in Cudgen. Round out your country drive with an overnight stay at Farm & Co-sy, a tranquil spot in Cudgen. Our tip: be sure to pick up fresh produce, locally made pasta and artisan breads and cheeses for a DIY dinner in.

Solar Chapel, Tyalgum I've lived and worked in the stunning village of Tyalgum for nearly 19 years, creating and managing Hearts Aflame Productions, bringing some of Australia's finest performing artists to the Tweed. Hearts Aflame creates annual signature events like the Tyalgum Dance Spectacular, as well as Cabaret shows featuring Australian, Broadway and West End artists. I'm also heavily involved in promotion and tourism for Tyalgum and Flutterbies Cottage Cafe. I love: The Tweed is a creative and artistic inspiration. We have some of the finest artists in Australia who both live and regularly visit here. The Tweed is a region with real heart, beauty and creativity. I unwind by: Exploring the many Hinterland villages - they're all so unique in their own way and have amazing stories to tell. My go to spot on a Friday night is Flutterbucks Pizzeria in Tyalgum, which has amazing gourmet pizza, a gin bar and live music every Friday, a favourite being local Indie Folk band 'The Heart Collectors'. It's the best way to end my week! Eating out: The Tweed has some of the most vibrant producers of produce you'll find anywhere in Australia and Flutterbies in Tyalgum, an award-winning cafe operating over 15 years, makes great efforts to only use fresh and organic where possible. They also offer a renowned high tea, recently reviewed on High Tea Society and receiving ratings as high as the Langham Hotel in Sydney. Must-do: The Tweed is an events hot spot! There are so many incredible festivals, markets, live music, theatre performances and concerts happening all year round. If you're planning a visit, be sure to check what's on - you'll definitely find something aligned to your tastes. Did you know: The top of Wollumbin Mount Warning, our icon of The Tweed, is the first place on mainland Australia to receive the sun's rays each day. 9

Your Tweed arts journey starts in Murwillumbah! After a morning starter sip and snack at Keith, you’ll find M|Arts Precinct around the corner and ready to immerse you in its hum of creative energy. M|Arts Precinct, a dedicated arts space, housed in an airy warehouse with all manner of makers crafting, selling and teaching their skills, is a place for both artists and art-lovers. Be inspired by painters, photographers, jewellers, knitters and florists and take home your favourite pieces. Time your visit for an arts class, the monthly Makers & Finders Market (3rd Saturday each month) or stock up on supplies at Yellow Brick Studio. A short drive south along Mistral Road leads to the outstanding Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre. Be sure to allocate enough time in your day to take in all that the Gallery has to offer, from the

works of local artists, major travelling exhibitions, artist-in-residence programs and significant art prizes. Replenish and relax with lunch at the Gallery’s gorgeous cafe, enjoying expansive views of the Tweed Valley, before taking in the incredible Margaret Olley Art Centre, a stunning tribute to one of Australia’s most loved painters. The re-creation of her Sydney home studio within the Gallery is a stunning permanent memoir to Olley’s rich life and art. Head back towards Murwillumbah and journey along the scenic Numinbah Road, passing through the hinterland town of Chillingham. Continue on along Zara and Limpinwood Roads towards Tyalgum to rest up overnight at Celestial Dew guesthouse in town or at a nearby luxury villa. Time your stay to coincide with the weekly wood-fired pizza and live music night, held each Friday in Tyalgum.
DAY 3: Uki and Stokers Siding
Tyalgum’s creative energy and conscious living are on show on the last Saturday of each month at the Tyalgum Village Market with local artisans and galleries, handmade crafts and original silversmith jewellery pieces all on offer, together with cafe fare to fuel your browsing.
Awaken to fresh country air and another day of creative vibes, starting in Uki township with coffee – and art! Art Post Uki is a treat. Housed in the heritage-listed Uki Post Office, you’ll find fresh roasted coffee courtesy of Bastion Lane Espresso, along with art exhibitions and warm Uki smiles. Local creative David Preston is a regular patron and featured artist.
Set off inspired along Tyalgum Road, winding east with the flow of the Oxley River towards Bray Park and then south towards Uki (alternatively take a longer route south via Tallowood and Byrrill Creek Road for scenic mountain vistas). Turn off along Mount Warning Road to take a table for lunch at Mavis’s Kitchen enjoying a menu of local flavours and views over the expansive gardens and surrounding forest. Head to Uki and check in to a luxury chalet at ecOasis Resort for the night with dinner preordered in to enjoy rainforest tranquillity and stunning views.

If you’re in town at the right time head to the Uki Historical School of Art to ‘Meet the Artists Behind the Art’, hosted by the local arts collective (third Sunday of the month), or the colourful Uki Buttery Bazaar Market each Sunday. Journey east now along Smiths Creek Road to the sweet treed town of Stokers Siding, with a small footprint but big community arts focus. Take in an exhibition at the Stokers Siding Art Gallery and time your visit to call into the Community Print Makers, open each Friday (or by appointment), where lino cuts, etchings and relief prints are made, displayed and sold. Finish up your trip here or check in for a night or two at Hosanna Farmstay in Stokers Siding.

I unwind by: Taking a bushwalk with my children. There are so many beautiful trails in the area, the kids and I love to picnic, explore and discover! Eating out: We live in Murwillumbah and our most favourite Saturday morning breakfast outing is to KEITH Murwillumbah. Yummmmm. It’s also right next to M|Arts Precinct, where my studio is, so it’s very conveniently placed for this hungry artist! Must-do: Come see me and all my friends at M|Arts Precinct. It’s a sweet and vibrant creative hub and you just might catch an artist doing something unexpected – well, that would no doubt be me! Did you know: Well, I heard that the astronomical or astrological coordinates of Wollumbin Mount Warning are the same as many of the man-made sacred structures around the world, such as the pyramids and Machu Pichu, and that it’s the only known natural place to share this with those sacred sites.

Begin at the beginning and gain an appreciation for the region’s Indigenous peoples with a visit to the Minjungbal Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Tweed Heads. Operated by the local Aboriginal community, the Centre’s exhibits, tours, art and occasional performances will ground you in knowledge of our respected cultural core. Check ahead for opening times. Before heading inland, also call into the Tweed Regional Museum’s smaller branch at Tweed Heads, housed in the area's original Court House and built in 1926. Follow the Tweed River, carved from the long-ago flow of an ancient shield volcano, to Tumbulgum. Enjoy lunch at the Tumbulgum Tavern, the area’s first licensed pub built in 1870, or at the picturesque House of Gabriel, set on Riverside Drive. The flavour-filled restaurant feels right at home in what was a local bakery and confectionary store over 120 years ago.
Here too, overlooking the Tweed River, is a tribute to Faith Bandler (nee Mussing) who grew up in Murwillumbah. Recognised with an Order of Australia, declared a living treasure by the National Trust and presented with a peace award by Nelson Mandela, Faith was a campaigner for human rights whose persistence led to the inclusion of Aboriginal Australians in the census from 1967, giving longawaited recognition and the right to vote. Round out your day of immersive learning with a self-guided walk, Facade, that leads you through the stunning Art Deco streets of Murwillumbah. Decimated at the turn of the century by fire, the town was rebuilt in the style of the time, with pressed metal and sunburst ceilings, lead light windows and curved edge walls, all standing the test of time. Warm up your day with a visit to Bastion Lane Espresso and Art Post Uki, set in a 1909 heritagelisted Post Office on Uki’s main street, where roasted beans and coffee brews blend with uplifting art, postal services and local morning chatter. Said to take its name from the local Aboriginal word for ‘bandicoot’, Uki was built largely on dairy farming with Norco’s Butter Factory opening in 1910 and still standing today as host to the popular Bazaar Markets. Also in town were blacksmiths,
a coachbuilder, tinsmith, bootmaker and more, harking back to the halcyon days of lost trades. A must for history buffs and vintage tragics alike is a visit to Heath’s Old Wares & Collectables in Burringbar, a 20 minute drive from Uki along Smiths Creek Road via Stokers Siding. Set on the main street, Broadway, Heath’s is a magnet for antique-lovers with literal wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling treasures. It’s a pretty 20 minute country drive to Tyalgum, via Bray Park and along the Tyalgum Road as it traces the curve of the Oxley River. Time your visit for spring or autumn to tour the bursting colours and peaceful pockets within Tyalgum’s tranquil Garden of Light, a 25 acre property celebrating all manner of gardens, from cottage to Tuscan and even some Monet-inspired plantings. Enjoy lunch at Flutterbies before heading north along Limpinwood Road. Take in sweeping valley views from Tyalgum Lookout, found along Boxsell Road, then continue on via Chillingham to overnight at Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat. Here you’ll be embraced by ancient Gondwana rainforest, with over eight kilometres of tracks and fern-lined gullies to explore. DAY 2: Uki, Wollumbin Mount Warning and Border Ranges National Park
Start early today with sustenance on-the-go from nearby Crystal Creek Estate (also home to a wonderful plant nursery) and track back via Murwillumbah towards Uki. Along the way you’ll see the peak of Wollumbin Mount Warning as you journey along past lush farmland and tall trees.

Gary Wall, Bastion Lane Espresso, Uki Bastion Lane Espresso’s owner and director Gary Wall had long hankered to be part of the coffee industry. After completing an MBA in 2017, Gary purchased a working post office; his plan to run it in tandem with a coffee roastery was regarded by some as mildly bonkers. The large restoration project commenced and once the beautiful 1909 building was restored, the La Marzocco Strada espresso machine and Diedrich coffee roaster were installed, the Bastion Lane Espresso Bar opened its doors in January 2018. Word quickly spread around Uki and beyond that great coffee was being served in the old Uki Post Office, which goes hand-in-hand with our vision to create the best coffee experience for our customers. I love: The location aspect, it really is second to none. Living in Uki, at the bottom of Wollumbin Mount Warning, we are only 35 mins from an International Airport, the same distance from the beach, and just 45 mins from Byron Bay. It’s the perfect mix of work and play. I unwind by: Exercising and swimming at one of the many beautiful beaches in our region, Wooyung is my all-time favourite. Eating out: Without question, Mavis’s Kitchen is my favourite. The team have created a magnificent setting paired with a delicious food and wine menu. Saturday night dinner sitting on one of the balconies is my all-time favourite time to visit. Must-do: Take time to pay a visit to the small, quaint towns in the region. They have so much character and our 'off the track' experiences give you the opportunity to engage with locals in a more intimate setting. Did you know: Wollumbin Mount Warning is the first place in Australia to be touched by the sun as it rises each day. Even in winter, we can experience beautiful warm days of 23 degrees. 23
If you need a shot of coffee and a sweet treat, stop in at the friendly Bastion Lane Espresso in Uki to fuel up and review your upcoming trail hike plans. From a map, you’ll see the arc of National Parks that form a mountainous embrace of the Tweed Valley. These mighty ranges were once the outer edges of a towering shield volcano, with Wollumbin Mount Warning once the central vent, its peak rising to 1,157m above sea level. Wollumbin, said to mean ‘cloud catcher’ in the local indigenous language, is still today a place of great sacred significance to the Bundjalung people. Note: Wollumbin National Park is currently closed due to public safety risks but you can enjoy magnificent views of Wollumbin Mount Warning from other surrounding walking tracks, including the Border Ranges National Park, next up on your drive itinerary. From Uki (grab a quick takeaway bite here for lunch later),
head south along Kyogle Road towards Lillian Rock to start your journey into the Border Ranges National Park and to The Pinnacle Lookout. Note: The road from here is gravel so only proceed if your vehicle is suitable to the surface. Be sure to allow enough time in your day to travel safely and comfortably – from Uki to The Pinnacle Lookout, allow about 90 minutes’ driving and at least 30 minutes to enjoy the view. Turn right onto Williams Road and Creegans Road, reaching the Tweed Ranges Scenic Drive, via Blackbutts Lookout, to journey into the Border Ranges National Park and arrive at The Pinnacle Lookout. Bring your camera and take a short walk through forested tracks to be rewarded with extraordinary panoramic views at this iconic spot, taking in the vast Green Caldera and standing high on what was once the rim of an ancient shield volcano. Dramatic escarpments blanketed in trees and vast World Heritage rainforest feature in this breathtaking 360 degree outlook. For keen walkers and experienced campers with the right gear, continue your adventures from here along walking tracks and at camp spots in the Border Ranges National Park and adjoining Mebbin National Park. Or, if this is nature enough for your day, retrace your path to Uki for a good night’s rest in a cosy B & B or rainforest retreat.

Settle in for a laid-back pub lunch at the Kingscliff Beach Hotel before an afternoon clay-making session with the talented team at Stone Studio. Round out your beach day with a night spent sleeping seaside. There’s a wide variety of styles and options right along this beautiful coast. For a dinner treat, book in for casual Italian tastes at No 35 Kitchen and Bar in Cabarita Beach village.
DAY 2 Cabarita Beach, Hastings Point, Pottsville, Mooball, Burringbar
Up early to the sound of waves, grab a brekky bite and sip of choice from cold pressed juices and healthy tonics to smoothies and coffee at Nectar Juice House in Caba. Stretch the legs with a short walk up to Norries Headland, a great vantage point for 360 degree views out to the horizon and nearby hinterland ranges. Follow the coastline south to Hastings Point for some time at the Marine Discovery Centre at North Star Holiday Park, a great spot for kids and ocean-lovers alike. Continue south on to Pottsville and take a seat at Black Drop Cafe for a delicious lunch before steering your wheel west and heading inland, switching views of blue for scenes of green, as far as the eye can see. Aim your map for Mooball and stop in at this tiny town to browse original art at Quilla Design Emporium, a gorgeous space for mixed-media works by local female artists, designers and artisans.
As dusk draws near, take a turn on to Broadway, the main street of Burringbar, and settle in for a wine experience at Brooklyn Tasting Room, where you’ll find well-stocked walls of take-home bottles, especially natural wines and craft beers. If you land here on a Friday and have an appetite for tacos, you’ll love Mercado Juarez, an authentic Mexican taqueria, serving up takeaway quesadillas, tostados, nachos and, of course, tacos each Friday night for dinner, as well as for lunch on Thursdays and Saturdays. Time to rest for the night at the peaceful ecOasis resort, set in lush forest with stunning views out to Wollumbin Mount Warning.

Awake to bird calls and country light then head to Uki for morning coffee (or tea!) at Bastion Lane Espresso, a mecca for bean fiends from near and far. Within the combination cafe and post office is also Art Post Uki, celebrating the work of local artists.
Grab an early breakfast in town and, before you turn the wheel towards home, there’s time to fit in a couple more Tweed experiences.
From here, take a short drive to breathe in the serenity of Clarrie Hall Dam with beautiful views found at Crams Farm, before journeying into Murwillumbah for lunch at your pick of cafes ahead of some relaxed retail therapy. For unique boutique pieces don’t miss Knox & Co and Each to Own, as well as a browse for original art and much more at M|Arts Precinct. Book in for an overnight stay at The Imperial Hotel, a grand old art deco pub that’s been lovingly restored, and check ahead for session times at the historic Regent Cinema to catch an evening movie. 31
Enjoy the morning on board a Tweed Escapes tour where you can cruise the Tweed River learning about the region’s incredible nature, birdlife and history, or book ahead for their Picnics on Water experience, tasting locally grown and made food with a focus on sustainability. Finally, head back towards the coast for a lunch of seafood delights and afternoon cocktails at The Oyster Shed in Tweed Heads West. Oyster fans from all over flock here for freshly shucked goodness from both the Shed’s own oyster leases as well as their favourites from further afield, served up in myriad ways to suit all palates.
