WINTON CLUB REUNION 2019 28-30 JUNE

DEAR WINTONIAN

DEAR FELLOW WINTONIAN

As spring blooms across our glorious campus, we’re looking ahead to another busy and exciting year.

It has been an interesting year as the Winton Club as we have known it has been developed and modified to fit the needs of the whole Alumni body, now numbering more than 30,000. Those of us who meet to organise this Reunion have been given guardianship of all Alumni who are thirty years on or more, and are now called the Old Wintonians Working Group, to differentiate us from the Winton Club as a whole. In addition to Reunion planning, we will continue to administer the Winton Club Benevolent Fund to which you so generously contribute, seeking to uphold the values stated at the inception of the Club, namely the immediate relief of need among Wintonians.

As the legend goes, anyone who sits on the Buttercross in the High Street is destined to one day return to Winchester. Regardless of whether you have visited many times since your student days, or you have yet to be back since, I am delighted to invite you to return for Winton Club Reunion 2019. As a University, we continue to stay true to both our mission as well as our values (compassion, individuals matter and spirituality) amidst a challenging time for the sector. We are currently developing our next Strategic Plan. This will take us to 2030 and see us tackle some of world’s most pressing issues head on, from climate change to social injustice, through both our direct actions and projects as well as the difference you, our alumni, make across the globe. Regardless of whether you can join us for Reunion this year, I do hope you will join us in our mission to educate, to advance knowledge and to serve the common good. We have more ways for you to be involved than ever before. Through supporting the employability of our current students, championing your alma mater to a prospective Wintonian, donating to one of our Funds, or sharing your stories with other alumni, you can help your alumni community and your institution make a difference. You represent not only our proud past, but the key to helping us achieve our formidable future. Thank you for your continued loyalty and support. We look forward to seeing you this summer.

We are also charged with oversight of Heritage Strategy and work is ongoing to locate and store safely items, particularly from the Chapel, which we remember from our time at King Alfred’s College. Reunion events are listed in this booklet, and I hope you will want to come to Winchester for some or part of the weekend. In addition to the listed events there are informal gatherings, and whatever date you attended College I feel sure you will find someone you know – or perhaps more worryingly, remembers you for that thing you forgot you did! While stalwarts from the 1930s onwards still attend in good numbers, there has also been a dramatic increase in the numbers attending from the 1970s; many old friendships have been rekindled and new ones formed. We hope to see you in June: should you not be able to attend this year, please note that the dates for next year are Friday 26 to Sunday 28 June 2020.

With best wishes to you and your families,

Professor Joy Carter CBE DL, Vice-Chancellor
