THE PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATE IN EDUCATION AND MASTERS IN SOCIAL RESEARCH IN EDUCATION
The Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) and Masters in Social Research in Education (MRes) The Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) and Masters in Social Research in Education (MRes) are designed to enable professional educators to extend and develop their skills in research and make an impact on their teaching practice.
the spectrum of methodologies and methods used in social research in education. The EdD is the professional equivalent of a PhD, but with a specific focus on conducting research that makes an impact on an educational setting. An EdD graduate will be an expert in their area, contributing to their field of knowledge, whilst engaging with others to challenge, improve, change and impact upon educational practice.
The programme is suitable for those working in an Educational setting, for example; school teachers, senior educational leaders, lecturers, medical educators, social workers, administrators in education. The majority of our students study part-time while working full time and are supported by an expert team of university tutors and supervisors, who will guide you through the programme (see table below).
The programme is delivered via seminars and supervision with expert staff at the University of Winchester. Each module combines campus based teaching with online learning specifically designed to fit around your everyday working role.
The MRes engages students with a range of research methods to give them a broad-based understanding of PROGRESSION THROUGH THE EDD/ MRES PROGRAMME YEAR 1

WHAT CAN I STUDY?
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE EdD AND THE MRes?
We are able to support a wide variety of research topics and areas. For example, current research areas include:
For those students who want to develop their professional research skills but don’t feel ready to undertake a doctorate yet, the MRes provides a Masters-level training in research methods for social research.
• an investigation into online assessment feedback • an investigation into the role gender plays in school management, • a study in the use of Philosophy for Children (P4C) as a research methodology • a study into the experiences of dyslexic students in HE settings
Timescales and Fees 3 years full time/6 years part time
The MRes is also a very useful starting point for those thinking about higher study (and is eligible for significantly advanced entry to the EdD, upon completion). The MRes and EdD share the same initial three modules. Students on the MRes then complete a research methodology focused dissertation, while EdD students continue with the doctoral units of study. EdD students work towards the completion of a substantial thesis that is an original contribution to thinking and practice in their field.

POSTGRADUATE LOANS Students beginning the EdD or the MRes at The University of Winchester are eligible to apply for a postgraduate loan. However they must meet the criteria (please see link below) Full details of the loan (including eligibility) are available from www.gov.uk/funding-for-postgraduate-study
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How is an EdD different from a PhD? The two degrees are the same level (Level 8) and are equivalent qualifications – at the end of the course you will be able to use the title of ‘Doctor’. The distinction is that an EdD must be practice focused. Whilst it will have a considerable element of theory, it must be based in practice - challenging or changing it in some way. Our students are either currently engaged in education, or have access to educational settings in which to carry out their research. The advantage of this is that employers will benefit from you engaging with this course, and many of are students are often able to get some if not all of their fees funded. The EdD is modular, meaning that students are able to spend the first few modules exploring what their possible thesis focus will be. You do not need to know what you want to research from the onset. Can I transfer credit from another postgraduate degree? If you have undertaken postgraduate study in similar areas to our modules, you may be eligible for RPL (recognition of prior learning). For example, if you studied for an EdD elsewhere, but did not complete it, you may be eligible to receive credit for some modules. Our RPL policy is available on the University’s external website. Credit usually expires after 5 years. Even if you do think you are eligible, some students prefer to study content again as a ‘refresher’.
How do I apply? If you wish to apply for a place please visit www.winchester.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/how-to-apply When can I apply? Both programmes have a September entry point. I’m an international student, can I still apply? Absolutely! So long as you meet the entry requirements (detailed on the homepages), and are able to attend the face-to-face sessions. International students can contact our International Recruitment Team at international@winchester.ac.uk for further advice.
What if I don’t have a Masters degree, can I still apply for the EdD? If you don’t have a Masters degree, you can only be admitted to the MRes initially. Upon successful completion of the first three modules, you would then be considered for transfer to the EdD. What happens after I apply? If you are applying for the MRes your application will be considered based on the published entrance requirements. You will be informed of a decision shortly. If you are applying for the EdD, we will be in touch soon after you apply. If you are called for interview we will send details of what to do to prepare for your interview. You will be interviewed by the Programme Leader and one other member of the teaching team. We will usually inform you of the outcome of the interview within a few days. We are always keen to hear from educators who are looking to develop themselves professionally, question assumptions in their settings, and become leaders in their field. Good luck with your application! Dr Kerry Ball Programme Leader (EdD & MRes) kerry.ball@winchester.ac.uk

The EdD has been instrumental in developing my understanding and awareness of being a researcher. Each module has been designed carefully to encourage critical thinking and discussion around key ideas and theoretical perspectives. My identity as a researcher has been enhanced greatly throughout my time on the EdD and the though provoking sessions have encouraged me to adopt a stronger critical mindset both towards my academic study and research.

What I loved about the EdD was the flexibility to amend, refine or even completely reconceptualise my focus for my final thesis. As I progressed through the modules, not only did my own confidence grow, but also I was able to see opportunities for my research that had not been evident to me at the start. This meant that my final thesis was so much more focussed and relevant as a result.

I chose the EdD at Winchester (over a PhD!) due to the brilliant teaching element involved. While I thought I knew I was up to the challenge of a Doctorate, knowing I would be taught all the necessary skills and have a high level of support and contact with tutors throughout was exactly what I wanted and needed in order to succeed! Really enjoying it so far!
