WHERE CURIOSITY BECOMES CHANGE

HEAR FROM OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF

“When I compare myself to who I was when I started at Winchester, I see how much I have grown. I have become more confident not only in my studies but in myself and the world around me. I have gained a vast amount of knowledge on a subject that I absolutely love and have made friends for life. University isn’t just learning about a subject and getting a good grade, it’s about growing as a person to be capable and confident in work and in life. Winchester has helped me become a self-assured and independent person ready to face my future.”

“The University of Winchester’s close-knit community is its superpower. With personalised support from my lecturers and career advisors, I was able to secure two dream internships during my time here. The one-to-one guidance and confidence they gave me made all the difference.”

Thomas Bwambale Muhiwa, Computer Science (with Foundation Year) student

“The University is a community that truly supports your ambitions, helps you to grow with real world opportunities and inspires you to make a difference.”

Michelle Jolley, Senior Lecturer in Criminology

“When students are inspired, they come alive and their passion for the subject is tangible. I’m helping to broaden minds and get students to think more openly and inquisitively about highly complex topics.”

Jayne Little, Senior Lecturer in Accounting

“I think a first year student coming to the University of Winchester can expect to meet an enthusiastic team who are really keen on linking what happens in the classroom to what’s happening out there in the outside world.”

Glenn Fosbraey, Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences

“In a classroom, lecturer and student are connected in a shared passion for their subject. Lectures bring the knowledge and wisdom, but also provide a safe space for students to express themselves and grow as people.”

OUR CITY

Winchester is packed full of incredible entertainment, lively pubs and cosy cafés, great places to eat, stunning green spaces and plenty of history. With something for everyone, fall in love with Winchester as you make this beautiful city your own.

Nightlife

Whether you want to curl up in a cosy pub with friends, dance the night away, take centre stage with the karaoke mic or fancy yourself as a quiz buff – Winchester has you covered.

Enjoy a drink at one of the oldest pubs in England, the Royal Oak, or experience being served a cocktail in a shell at Incognito! Alfie’s, O’Neill’s and The Broadway are the best spots for dancing. Our music scene hits the right notes with vinyl-only DJ sets at Overdraft, silent discos in Winchester Cathedral and live music from new acts in venues across the city, including The Railway Inn.

Film lovers should head to the Everyman Cinema, housed within a former chapel, to enjoy the latest films or classics. For live comedy or shows, Winchester Theatre Royal, The Arc or Chesil Theatre are the places to keep an eye on.

Food

From on-the-go street food to an extravagant graduation meal, there is something for every craving and every budget in Winchester. Our favourites include New York pizza slices at 5 Boroughs; sushi, bao and kimbap at Bento Factory; Malaysian street food at Lucky Lychee; and the pies at Piecaramba. Food is taken so seriously in the city that despite having the usual favourites and our

independent eateries available, there is still a rolling stream of food markets, pop-ups and festivals.

Wellbeing

Take a study break and unwind with a relaxing stroll along the water meadows, meandering through the city centre to end at Winnall Moors Nature Reserve. If you’re feeling fit, climb St Catherine’s Hill or St Giles Hill for impressive views across the city. Winchester is on the edge of South Downs National Park for those wanting to walk or cycle one of the many trails on offer through gorgeous rolling countryside.

Winchester’s café culture rivals the best in Europe. You will have no problem getting your coffee exactly how you like it while you’re catching up with friends. Grab a cuppa or hot chocolate on-the-go as you take the 10-15 minute walk from the city centre back to the University.

From pottery and pizza Fridays to paint and sip nights, Bella Crafts offers a fun and affordable way to be creative.

History

Once the ancient capital of England, Winchester is steeped in over 2,000 years of history. Follow the cobbled streets from the stunning world-famous Winchester Cathedral to the ruins of Wolvesey Castle. There are plenty of museums dotted across the city and most, if not all, offer a student discount.

Festivals

Music lovers can enjoy Boomtown Festival (a couple of miles outside the city) or Victorious Festival (45 minutes away). You can also watch spectacular outdoor performances across the city as part of the summer Hat Fair, and a range of festivals from food to jazz, comedy to film throughout the year.

Shopping

Up and down the High Street and nestled along Winchester’s picturesque side streets, not only will you find an array of big name stores but also a treasure trove of nearly 200 independent businesses. Chase any winter blues away with a wander around Winchester’s renowned Christmas Market in the Cathedral Close where you will find vendors set up in the pretty wooden chalets.

Further afield

Just outside the city centre you’ve got Marwell Zoo, Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium and a whole host of easily accessible neighbouring towns and cities. In less than an hour you can feel the sand between your toes as you visit the beach for a breath of sea air. Winchester is centrally located in the South of England. London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Oxford are all easy to get to, and direct train lines stretch to Coventry, Birmingham and Manchester. Not only is that great for the odd weekend trip or heading home, it also opens up a wider world of potential work placements for you.

We believe students from all backgrounds deserve access to a university education. We are committed to helping you apply to Winchester to reach your potential so take a look at the opportunities below.

Pathways Programme

Some of our courses offer a Pathways Programme where you have the opportunity to engage in a series of practical and informative sessions led by our academic team. These are designed to give you an introduction to your subject and life at the University of Winchester before you arrive.

As part of the Programme, you may:

• Experience practical exercises/activities

• Receive personalised career guidance and advice from relevant professionals

• Request optional interview experience with a Dean of Faculty or Head of Department

Eligible applicants who complete the programme may receive a contextual offer (one grade lower than the typical offer).

Our Pathways Programme is open to all Year 12 and 13 students from the UK or Channel Islands but spaces are limited.
