MA EDUCATION PROGRAMME INFORMATION 2024-25 “An excellent combination of theoretical and practical approaches – I have really enjoyed the course and professional discussions.” Former student

Excellent combination of theoretical and practical approaches… I have really enjoyed the course and professional discussion.

My teaching has changed from procedural number work to investigative hands on learning, which gives the children a much deeper understanding.

WHAT OUR CURRENT STUDENTS SAY...

I have greater confidence in my own ability and better knowledge means that I am able to respond more effectively.

Other staff in school have benefitted from the material and from the training I have been given.

MA EDUCATION MA Education at Winchester is grounded in research-based teaching, with practitioners constructing practical theories of the situations which confront them in their professional life and testing them in action. The programme is suitable for teachers working in primary, secondary and post-compulsory settings as well as workplace educators. The programme is designed to enhance and deepen pedagogic knowledge of learning and aspects of students’ professional role in the workplace. Students build up credits by undertaking a range of option modules, allowing them to focus on issues relevant to their own professional practice. The programme is delivered via seminars which combine tutor-led input with opportunities to learn through peer reflection and debate. Each module will have opportunities for campus-based sessions, together with online learning opportunities. The proportion of campus-based to online learning will be dependent on the nature of the module content, with some flexibility to take into account student needs and preferences. PATHWAY OPTIONS INDEPENDENT WORK BASED RESEARCH ROUTE (IWBR) The IWBR route is a flexible route through a suite of three option modules which enable you to explore an element of pedagogy in your own classroom practice, school leadership role or an aspect of school improvement. It involves a series of group twilight sessions with a course tutor who will support you in designing and implementing your project. The first module in the IWBR suite offers the opportunity to reflect analytically on an aspect of professional practice situated in your own setting, to form the basis for a literature-based enquiry. The second module supports the development of skills to enable you to reflect analytically on an aspect of professional practice, drawing on reflective practice approaches. The third module is designed to support the development of empirical research skills within the context of a small-scale research project, relevant to your professional context. MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING IN EDUCATION This module will examine the contribution of education to mental health and wellbeing. It involves a critical examination of current educational practices, including recent initiatives and will explore some of the alternative approaches developed in this country and elsewhere. The emphasis will be on critical engagement with research, evidence, explanation and critical thinking in examining this field. Throughout the twilight group sessions students will be encouraged to critically examine their own professional practice in approaches to enhancing mental health and wellbeing.
