A Foundation Year is an extra year of study at the start of your course (Year 0) which leads onto a full degree programme (Years 1, 2 and 3). In Year 0, you study a set of modules from across your Faculty which are designed to develop your academic and practical skills. This broader focus in your first year introduces you to studying at university level and provides you with a better understanding of your own degree pathway and related disciplines. You will experience a variety of teaching methods including lectures, discussion-based seminars and independent study. You will also receive support to boost your academic skills to prepare you for onward study at Winchester. All students studying a Foundation Year benefit from the ‘Succeeding at University’ module which helps build your self-awareness and confidence in your academic ability. You will identify your own preferred learning style, and how to use this to your advantage, and learn how to search, identify and understand suitable academic resources. You will develop your academic writing and strategies for approaching assessments. There are opportunities to engage in discussions and debate, as well as giving/receiving constructive feedback. In Years 1-3, you specialise in your chosen subject area and can begin to choose optional modules to further tailor the course to your interests. A Foundation Year at Winchester may be the right choice for you if you: • Are returning to education after a break in your studies • Have not quite achieved the entry qualifications required for your chosen undergraduate course 3

• Are wanting more support during the transition to university study • Are not quite sure which subject you wish to pursue. It is the perfect way to boost your academic skills, build your confidence and develop your wider subject knowledge at the start of your university experience, so you can reach your full potential and succeed at Winchester. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YEAR 0?

Successful completion of your first year, Year 0, automatically guarantees you a place on the relevant linked course – so you progress onto the next level, Year 1. Many of our Foundation Year courses also offer you the option to change course after Year 0 if you wish; for example, moving from completing Year 0 on the Creative Writing (with Foundation Year) course to starting Year 1 on the Media and Communication course. When you start Year 1, some students will have also completed a Foundation Year and some students may be starting directly at this level. Many students who have already completed a year at Winchester find this advantageous as you will be familiar with the University learning environment. WHICH COURSES HAVE A FOUNDATION YEAR?

INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION PROGRAMME Our International Foundation Programme (IFP) is ideal if you are an international student who has not met the English entry requirements and/or A Level equivalencies for your chosen undergraduate course. Our International Foundation Programme is a one-year full-time course designed to prepare you with the academic skills and knowledge you will need to study at undergraduate level at Winchester. You will be taught by a dedicated, expert team, and receive high-quality English Language teaching. You will learn the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for academic study; learn how to study independently; and build up research skills. We want to help you reach your full potential, while ensuring you benefit from your cultural experience in the UK. We provide a high degree of pastoral support while you are on the IFP, and group tutorials are held weekly to ensure there is also time to discuss your academic

progress. Academic English support continues through one-to-one appointments with an English language tutor when you leave the IFP. At the time of publication, all IFP students study the English for Academic Purposes modules. Optional modules cover topics such as Introduction to Business Studies, Introduction to Media and Introduction to the Arts in Britain. On successful completion of the IFP, you are automatically guaranteed a place on one of our eligible undergraduate degree courses (where the course has no additional requirements). If you are applying to study an undergraduate Foundation Year course, you must have a minimum of IELTS 6.0 (including 5.5 in academic writing) or equivalent. However, if you are studying the International Foundation Programme then you need an overall IELTS score of 5.0 (including 4.5 in writing, reading, listening and speaking) or equivalent. HOW TO APPLY Here’s your step-by-step guide to applying to Winchester. 1. VISIT

Visit our beautiful campus at one of our Open Days (see page 40). You can also follow us on social media to get a feel for life at Winchester (see page 25). 2. APPLY

Submit your application via ucas.com to study at Winchester (don’t forget about the 26 January UCAS deadline). We review your application. For some courses, you might be asked to attend an interview. 3. OFFER

You can apply to study with us from September 2021, then begin the exciting countdown to starting at the University of Winchester.

Once you make us your first choice, you can begin your journey at Winchester: • Apply for University housing by 31 March 2022 to be in with a chance to win free accommodation for your first year. If you are a full-time first year undergraduate student, we guarantee you accommodation (please note application deadlines do apply) • You may be eligible for additional financial support through our wide range of awards and bursaries • If you are predicted top grades, you may be eligible for our Highflier Academic Achievement Award • Chat to a current student about life at Winchester before you arrive • Join our ‘Find Your Tribe’ Facebook group, so you can meet other students starting in 2022. 5. CONFIRM

You’ll receive your Welcome Pack containing all you need to know before you arrive. We meet international students flying into the UK for Welcome Week at the airport and shuttle you to campus by bus.

We accept UCAS tariff points earned from a variety of qualifications, including from the Access to Higher Education Diploma; International Baccalaureate; BTEC; CTEC; T levels; Extended Project (EP/EPQ); GCE and VCE; CACHE; Higher Sports Leadership Awards; and speech, music and drama examinations. We also accept qualifications taken from outside the UK including the Vitnemål for videregående opplæring (Norway); Advanced Placements, ACT, SAT and high school diploma (USA) and many others from all over the world.
