TRANSFORMING THE Understanding society, culture and the arts

Enhancing wellbeing, nurturing the individual

Making sense of a changing world and striving for social justice through creative collaboration. We are leading research within the fields of sociology, social work and policy, politics and international relations, communication, culture and media studies, and performing arts.

It takes many elements to ensure individuals and communities can flourish. We are leading research within the fields of theology and religion, education, sport and exercise, health, and psychology.

Research spotlight: THE BOAT The Boat is a collaborative project, designed to challenge the perceptions of immigration via an illustrated children’s story book.

Research spotlight: MUSIC IN CARE HOMES There is growing evidence for the psychological, physical and social benefits of live music and singing for older people who live in care homes – particularly those with dementia – and members of staff.

Student teachers on our Primary Education courses were paired with a selection of Hampshire primary school teachers. Their task was to undertake research and development to inform the story book, and to develop learning and teaching resources. The Boat is currently available along with downloadable teaching resources that can be used to engage young minds on the subject of immigration and challenge cultural attitudes towards refugees. Find out more: www.winchester.ac.uk/theboat

The University of Winchester is a partner in an innovative project which sees between ten and 20 weeks of interactive, creative music sessions led by specially-trained professional musicians take place in six care homes around the UK. Outcomes are being evaluated to see whether the overall happiness of residents and staff improves, and the results will feed into the development of effective arts and music interventions. WORLD AROUND US Exploring the past and the world around us

Building a sustainable and responsible future

Leading the way in understanding our past and the world around us. We are leading research within the fields of archaeology, anthropology, geography, geology and history.

Inspiring strong, responsible leaders to drive an inclusive, peaceful and sustainable global future. We are leading research within the fields of business, management, law, peacebuilding and justice.

Research spotlight: PAGES The nature and timing of the dispersal of Homo sapiens (our genus) across the Old World is fundamental to our understanding of human evolution during the Pleistocene (2 million to 11,500 years ago), yet current knowledge is largely based on the early stone age (Palaeolithic) records of East and Southern Africa. As a result, it is presently unclear what mechanisms drove human dispersal to other geographic regions, and how technological innovations (i.e. stone tools) and ecological adaptations developed along the way.

Research spotlight: GENERATION TAGGED A report by authors from the University of Winchester has raised important questions about the impact of broadcast and social media on the privacy and best interests of young children.

Funded by the Leverhulme Trust, the PAGES project tackles these fundamental questions by examining the Palaeolithic archaeology and Pleistocene geology of the Southern Caucasus. This region is home to the earliest human fossils found outside Africa and the earliest evidence for advanced human behaviour.

Based on extensive research, the report makes eight recommendations including calls for: • Young children to have an independent right to privacy, which is not dependent on their parents’ views • Social media and internet companies to have a duty to consider young children’s privacy and best interests in their operations • The introduction of a Children’s Digital Ombudsman to better represent children’s interests • A limit to the re-contextualising of images and information about young children, enforced by new image matching and tracking technologies

ANIMAL WELFARE SCIENCE, ETHICS AND LAW

Bring about a better world and positively contribute to the advancement of animal welfare.

MSc/PgDip/PgCert

ANIMAL WELFARE SCIENCE, ETHICS AND LAW Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law at Winchester critically reflects upon contemporary uses of animals, and provides the academic skills and expertise needed to advance their welfare and protect them. COURSE OVERVIEW

You consider animal ethics and the use of animals for food, sport, and scientific research. How should society reflect animal interests in our law-making and public policies? We scrutinise many forms of animal use in different settings, such as farming, transportation and slaughter, laboratories, homes, zoos and various other entertainment locales, and free-ranging animals in natural environments. As you progress through the course, you master the skills and knowledge involved in assessing and ensuring the welfare of animals using a range of data and sound scientific processes. The course is different from other comparable programmes in part because of the range of animals covered, including free-ranging species, invertebrates, pest animals, and the welfare problems associated with each. You are guided to develop communication skills in a range of styles, including posters, blogs, and multimedia presentations, and to share ideas about animal welfare outside of the academic setting. For any veterinarians pursuing specialist qualifications in animal welfare, this programme is based on the theoretical syllabus required for the European and US qualifications.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Normally a first or second-class Honours degree incorporating a related subject in the life or health sciences or humanities, or professional experience in the area of study (for example, within animal welfare charities, the veterinary profession, or as a Council Animal Welfare Officer). CULTURAL AND ARTS MANAGEMENT Cultural and Arts Management at Winchester develops your understanding of the relationship between business and arts, and examines wide-ranging topics such as implications of cultural policy and agendas of social inclusion and sustainability. COURSE OVERVIEW

LIBERAL ARTS

Rigorously explore the big questions.

MA/PgDip/PgCert

LIBERAL ARTS Liberal Arts at Winchester offers a different and exciting approach for you to truly tailor your studies around your own intellectual interests and questions. COURSE OVERVIEW

The Liberal Arts (Latin liberalis, free, and ars, art or principled practice) can claim to be the oldest programme of higher education in Western history. In Medieval culture this became formalised as the trivium, with the quadrivium of arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Essentially, these subjects laid out the uniform laws of what could be known and achieved in the natural universe. These broad areas of enquiry are better known now as philosophy, the humanities, social science, natural science, and the fine arts. You decide the content of your studies by working one-to-one in tutorials with tutor(s) who can complement your areas of interest with their own expertise within aspects of Liberal Arts study.

SOCIAL RESEARCH IN EDUCATION

Equipping you with advanced qualitative and quantitative research skills in educational settings.

MRes/PgDip/PgCert

SOCIAL RESEARCH IN EDUCATION Social Research in Education at Winchester offers a programme of focused study of research methods applicable to educational settings and educational enquiry. COURSE OVERVIEW

You are equipped and encouraged to develop an in-depth understanding of research methods, research design, and the cultural and ethical contexts in which educational research takes place. The course helps you to develop advanced qualitative and quantitative research skills, which support you in starting or enhancing a career in research or as a senior professional able to support others in research endeavours in educational settings, for example in schools.

You participate in workshops and seminars, and ongoing online and face-to-face discussions with tutors and other students. These include debating issues such as ethical considerations in research, and help develop some of the underpinning research skills. If you are not currently working in an educational setting, you will need to establish clear links with at least one setting for research purposes. CORE MODULES*

We focus on research design, which enables you to select appropriate approaches and methods to carry out investigations. As a result, you have the opportunity to develop intellectual and practical skills, along with the ability to analyse and communicate complex ideas in engaging ways, and creatively plan and manage an independent postgraduate research project in education. Successful completion of the course enables you to undertake further doctoral study on the Doctor of Education with advanced standing. You may choose to target a particular aspect of educational practice for data collection, although assignments analyse data collection methods, analysis approaches or ethical aspects of the research rather than the content of the practice. There is also a final dissertation project whereby you investigate an aspect of education that interests you - you choose an empirical or theoretical aspect of research methodology and explore it.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Normally a first or second-class Honours degree or professional experience in the area of study. MPHIL/PHD

Our values – compassion, individuals matter and spirituality – underpin everything we do. We hold the European Commission HR Excellence in Research Award in recognition of our outstanding commitment to research and supporting the professional development of our researchers.

MPHIL/PHD Studying for an MPhil or PhD at Winchester provides you with the opportunity to make a major and original contribution to knowledge. This rewarding experience involves direct engagement at the cutting edge of a chosen field of study and the chance to explore ideas and problems in depth and in innovative ways. OVERVIEW

Through a substantial programme of research, you critically investigate and evaluate a specific topic and demonstrate an understanding of research methodology appropriate to the field of study. Your topic may be a personal interest, an area of study related to an earlier qualification or an issue an employer would like you to investigate. If you wish to study for a PhD, you will first need to register for an MPhil. If your research is good enough, you may be able to upgrade through viva voce examination to a PhD programme. You can also take an MPhil as a qualification in its own right if your research project does not have enough scope for a full PhD. An MPhil requires a shorter thesis than a PhD, but you will still need to complete a viva to qualify. You will work on your topic of interest with the support of at least two supervisors who will provide subject and methodological expertise. The team is led by a Director of Studies together with a second supervisor and may also include specialist advisors. This leads to the production of a thesis or creative work, depending on your subject, which is examined by viva. Alongside progressing with your research, you undertake research skills development through a Postgraduate Certificate, enhanced by the Research Training Opportunities (RTO) Programme. The RTO enables you to join other students for relevant seminars, study groups and symposia. You also have

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Normally a first or upper second-class Honours degree or a Masters degree (or equivalent), relevant to your chosen discipline. This should be supported by two academic references. If you don’t have a degree in a related discipline, you must demonstrate relevant experience and engagement with the subject area. APPLICATION PROCESS: You need to submit a research proposal on Form A (which can be found on our website). Before you do this, you are strongly advised to discuss your ideas with a potential supervisor whose research interests complement your own. IF ENGLISH IS NOT YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE: IELTS 6.5 (including 7.0 in academic writing) or equivalent DEGREE DURATION: Up to 3 years full-time; up to 7 years part-time

a dedicated Postgraduate Research study space. In addition, we provide a training programme if you wish to pursue a teaching career in higher education and there may be opportunities for you to undertake paid part-time lecturing and tutorial work, if appropriate. If your research proposal needs further work before you embark on the MPhil/PhD, Preparation for Research is available. For a one-off fee, you receive up to six supervisory meetings, with IT and Library access in order to develop a revised research proposal. If it is satisfactory, you will be invited for interview. CAREERS

The skills and knowledge acquired while planning, conducting, analysing and writing up your research will significantly enhance your CV and help you stand out in a highly competitive graduate employment market. Employers in many professional fields recognise an MPhil or PhD as an indicator of highquality performance and the capacity for leadership in the field; it may therefore lead to opportunities for promotion and access to senior positions. DOCTOR OF THEOLOGY AND PRACTICE

“I enjoy academically rigorous study which is grounded in my practice of ministry, and have explored different aspects of ministry through undertaking smaller research projects. The theology I read is filtered through the lens of my professional practice so, in simple terms, this course helps me to be a better parish priest.” SHEENA WILLIAMS

MProf/PgDip/PgCert

DOCTOR OF THEOLOGY AND PRACTICE The Doctor of Theology and Practice is based on the context of your own professional practice, whether that is Christian ministry or leadership, or an occupation where theology and religion can play a role. COURSE OVERVIEW

The course begins with the module Connecting Theology, Religion and Practice, in which you combine the study of practical theology methods and approaches with two other academic areas in theology or religion, and reflect upon your own practice in the light of that study. You undertake supervised research and practical projects based on topics you are interested in, negotiated with the programme team. The outcomes of these include publishable academic writing and innovative practice in the field. You are expected to have well-developed skills of independent learning and research. There is supervision and support from tutors; however, the aim of the course is to enable you to reflect on and research your own professional or ministerial interests in the context of your practice.

• Literature Review • Thesis/Professional Research Module Thesis/Professional Research Module You undertake a major original independent study under a supervisory team drawn from the programme team and (where necessary) others with relevant academic or professional expertise. The independent study may take one of two forms: • A research project leading to the presentation of a 55,000-60,000-word thesis, which must identify and address theological questions arising from your practice and experience • An innovative example of practice (60 credits equivalent) accompanied by a 40,000 to 45,000word thesis (240 credits equivalent) reflecting theologically on the practice presented CAREERS

You are strongly encouraged to attend the Annual Study Day in Winchester, normally held in June, which allows you to meet other students on the course. The Study Day is part of an optional non-credit-bearing two-day residential seminar, the remainder of which is shared with other postgraduate research students in the Department of Theology, Religion and Philosophy. You are also encouraged, if your circumstances allow, to get involved in other Department and University events such as the Department’s regular research seminar programme. CORE MODULES*
