RECYCLING ON CAMPUS You can place the following types of recyclable material into the recycling bins on campus and in halls: paper and card, waxed cartons plastic bottles, plastics pots, tubs & trays, metal cans, tins, and foil, glass bottles and jars. Items must be clean and free of food - rinse them first if necessary. Liquids and food waste should not be put into recycling bins. Food Waste bins are located in catering outlets and are being introduced into halls of residence in 2021. If you live in halls, you will have your recycling bin emptied for you. You will need to empty your general bin and food waste to the main waste compounds on campus. The more you recycle, the less you need to empty your general waste bin! You’ll also find Gumdrop bins located across campus to recycle chewing gum, as well as special collection points for milk bottle tops, stamps, pens, corks, batteries, biscuit wrappers and more! Visit the Environment pages on the intranet for further information: winchester.ac.uk/environment

CARBON FOOTPRINT The University is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. So far we have reduced our CO2 emissions by over 65% but we want to do even better. You can help us by; switching off lights when you leave a room, shutting windows when the heating is on & switching off all your equipment when not in use. All these individual switch-off actions really do add up and make a difference. The University buys all its electricity and gas from 100% renewable sources and generates around 50,000 kWhs of energy from solar panels on campus. There are solar panels on the roofs of St Alphege, the West Downs Centre and the Bowers Building (Sports Hall). This year we are installing air source heat pumps and more solar panels to further reduce our footprint. Visit the Environment (Energy and Carbon Footprint) pages on the intranet for further information: winchester.ac.uk/environment

STUDENT IN HALLS? If so, Student Switch Off is your chance to win prizes by doing easy things like saving energy and recycling! As individuals and as a flat, you compete to see who can save the most energy by taking easy and effective actions. There are great prizes to be had, including NUS Xtra Cards and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The house in each student village with the lowest energy consumption per student over the whole year will also win VIP Summer Ball tickets for all its residents. BAG IT UP! Let us help you declutter when you move out of halls and donate your items to a good cause! Between April and June, bags will be provided in kitchens for clothing, shoes, kitchenware and home-ware. There will be regular collections of bags, with items donated to Emmaus Hampshire, Winchester Basics Bank and other charities in the local area. In 2021 we collected 1.5 tonnes of reusable items, including £1000 of food. These were donated to Winchester Basics Bank and shared amongst the Winchester Night Shelter, Trinity and other charities. ESD Education for Sustainable Development or (ESD) is the process of equipping students with the knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes needed to work and live in a way that safeguards environmental, social and economic wellbeing, both in the present and for future generations. In 2021/22, the University and Students Union is seeking re-accreditation for Responsible Futures, an NUS supported change programme and wholeinstitution approach to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It spans the formal curriculum (teaching, learning and assessment), informal curriculum (on campus and community activities) and subliminal curriculum (organizationalpractices). The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals provide the agenda for action in all three areas. To volunteer as a sustainability auditor email: environment@winchester.ac.uk

GET INVOLVED Why not get directly involved? Working with the Environment Team you can become a Student Switch Off or Fairtrade Ambassador and undertake sustainability audits for Responsible Futures – all recognised achievements to add to your HEAR.
