AMERICAN STUDIES

The United States of America may be considered the most wealthy, powerful, culturally influential and diverse nation – and also the most complicated and contradictory. Explore key issues and debates about culture, race and gender which have shaped the United States and, if you prefer, follow a specialist route in politics or history. Immerse yourself stateside by studying abroad at an American university for a semester or a year. Our optional two-week Field Trip in Year 2 or Civil Rights Pilgrimage in the American South in Year 3 are ideal for a shorter visit. ANIMAL WELFARE

Positively contribute to the advancement of animal welfare and bring about a better world. Explore relationships between humans and other animals, and examine what animal welfare means today. You will investigate big questions such as how do we understand animals; what are our responsibilities to animals; why do we develop emotional attachments to animals; why does society make gods of some animals but vilify others; and what can we learn about human nature by looking at animals? Critically review major theories, philosophies and contemporary problems as you study a range of animal welfare issues from ethics and law, to policy and the environment, to animal advocacy and representation.

ANTHROPOLOGY

If you enjoy delving into the bare bones of what it means to be human, then Anthropology at Winchester is the course for you. Through the lens of social anthropology, biological anthropology and archaeology/material culture, you will embark on a fascinating exploration of humanity. This course will develop your intercultural understanding – a key asset in today’s international job market. You can get up close and hands-on with a range of materials, from primate skeletons to religious relics, in our cutting-edge departmental laboratory. Take an immersive journey through time and gain the necessary skills to gather, analyse and interpret archaeological evidence to truly bring the past to life and conserve it for future generations.
