Starting in September We are looking forward to welcoming you to our beautiful campus this September. Our top priority is that you have a thoroughly enjoyable and safe time here. The global pandemic has changed so much about our way of life. We know many of you will have questions about what the start of your university life at Winchester is going to be like. We have three key messages for you: ■ Our campus will be open in September and we

are planning to welcome new and returning students onto campus and into student accommodation from September ■ We are putting in place a range of appropriate

social distancing measures to ensure our students and staff are safe – what we are calling our “Covid Safe Campus” ■ We will be delivering a combination of small

group, on-campus sessions with large group teaching taking place online. Our approach will be in line with Government guidance and will be flexible; ensuring we are able to respond to any changes in status such as a renewed lockdown or no virus present at any time in the academic year. In the event of another lockdown or similar restrictions between now and September, we will let you know if this changes your start date and how your teaching will be conducted. STARTING YOUR COURSE The academic year will start on Monday 21 September as planned. In advance of this, you will receive your timetable setting out when you will have classes on campus. If you are required to continue shielding beyond the start of the academic year, you can still start your course. We will put in place the support you need to start and get the most out of your studies and student experience. International students and those returning to the UK from abroad, we’re looking forward to welcoming you to

Winchester this September and will be working hard to make the transition as smooth as possible.. YOUR LEARNING EXPERIENCE From September, your teaching will be a combination of small group sessions on campus and online learning. Most of our courses are taught in small group settings such as seminars, workshops and tutorials, so we are in a good position to accommodate any social distancing measures set out in national guidelines. Over recent years, the way students study at university has become a blend of classroom-based and online teaching, where traditional practices have developed with the use of online teaching and learning tools. Winchester has for many years made use of a “virtual learning environment” that comprises some of the best online educational tools available. This web-based platform integrates with other services - like Microsoft Teams – and popular social networking and educational tools to create a personalised and interactive learning space. YOUR WIDER UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE As with all aspects of our life in lockdown, we have become used to different ways of interacting and having fun. We are working with Winchester Student Union and others in the city to explore ways to help you enjoy the full range of university life. All of the things that make life as a Winchester student great – like the clubs and societies, extra-curricular activities, volunteering opportunities – will still be on offer wherever possible. SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS We have always been passionate about providing a supportive and inclusive environment to help all students flourish. This has never been more true as we plan for the next academic year. All of our student support services, including mental health and disability support together with careers advice, will be available from September both on campus or online as appropriate.

Once you register online, you can explore our library intranet pages; find them under Campus Life or useful Links. Every subject has a dedicated Librarian who can help you with finding resources that are particularly useful for your course. You’ll be able to use the intranet to “Discover your subject area” from our Library homepage to find dedicated resources for your topics. We are really looking forward to opening our new Library and Learning spaces in the West Downs Centre. In our libraries, Martial Rose Library (King Alfred Quarter) and West Downs (West Downs Quarter), we’re always here for your research and study needs and you can even bring in snacks and drinks to many areas. All of our online content is available 24/7, and the study spaces will be open when it really counts. If you are doing a course that involves delivering lessons for children you will no doubt make use of our School Resources Collection. All students have access to multifunction printers but we also provide an additional printing team (Reprographics) located at the Medecroft Quarter – they can print, photocopy, laminate, bind and print posters up to A0 size. Whilst this is a chargeable service, we keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re bringing your own devices to campus, full details on how to connect to the wifi will be available on arrival. If you are living in University accommodation, you’ll need to run a security scan on your computer before you can connect to the network – you can do this before you arrive by going to scan.winchester.ac.uk. Many common games consoles (wired) can be used with our network but unfortunately, wireless printing is not permitted. Finally, all students are encouraged to download the University of Winchester Mobile App – this is not only an important source of information but is the way to register attendance at lectures. We will ensure your course remains well organised and we will inform you of any unavoidable changes.

To ensure your learning experience is the best it can be, you are expected to attend lectures, having suitably prepared with the set preparatory material. To achieve your best you should also explore further reading and research, using the wide variety of learning resources available to you, and take up the academic opportunities on offer, enabling you to grow as an independent scholar. Staff will communicate with you about your course via Canvas and emails; it is equally important that you regularly check these platforms.

ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK Staff will ensure the assessment criteria are clear and available in advance of any assessment and the University will make clear its policies to you. Marks will be fair and feedback on assessed work will be timely, returned within 15 working days. The feedback you receive will be helpful for supporting your future development and will guide you on areas of improvement for future assessments. You will also receive a continuous cycle of feedback from staff; in class, and via tutorials and emails.

To ensure you are well prepared for assessments, you should organise your time according to your deadlines. To achieve your best you should read and understand the assessment criteria, as these provide the framework on which you are marked. You should keep in contact with your lecturers and Winchester Student Union and ask for support. When you receive feedback on an assessment, take time to reflect and act on the advice to enhance your future work.

We will let you know how your feedback has been acted on. Winchester Student Union represents your academic interests and will empower your voice through a variety of ways, including through the Student Academic Representative (StARs) scheme.

You should make use of the many opportunities to share your opinions and views about your student experience. Ensure you regularly speak to your Student Academic Representatives (StARs), your Student Union and your programme team and engage in conversations about enhancing your course. Give open and honest feedback and ensure you make suggestions for alternative practice that would improve your experience.
