Hear why our students and staff love

Winchester…

Thomas Bwambale Muhiwa, Computer Science (with Foundation Year) student

“The city of Winchester is lovely with many historical sites to see. What I love the most is that it is hospitable and diverse. I am an international student but I feel a sense of belonging. I have made some amazing friends in Winchester.”

Rebecca Hooper, English Literature with English Language student

“The opportunities for enhancing our employability have been abundant. The employability fayres, the Careers and Opportunities Hub and Student Services are always there to lend a helping hand with job applications, future planning or even if you just feel a bit stuck. I am grateful for the University’s constant support.”

Chileshe Lungu, Marketing student

“One of my favourite things about my time at Winchester is growing and developing alongside my course mates. I’ve loved being around so many like-minded people from different walks of life, all striving for their goals – it has been such a rewarding and eye-opening learning experience.”

Michelle Jolley, Senior Lecturer in Criminology

“When students are inspired, they come alive and their passion for the subject is tangible. I’m helping to broaden minds and get students to think more openly and inquisitively about highly complex topics.”

Jayne Little, Senior Lecturer in Accounting

“I think a first year student coming to the University of Winchester can expect to meet an enthusiastic team who are really keen on linking what happens in the classroom to what’s happening out there in the outside world.”

Glenn Fosbraey, Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences

“In a classroom, lecturer and student are connected in a shared passion for their subject. Lectures bring the knowledge and wisdom, but also provide a safe space for students to express themselves and grow as people.”

7

WINCHESTER CITY

8

Friendly, compact and with almost 2,000 years of history, Winchester is where many stories have started.

Events

Winchester is full of incredible experiences you won’t forget. Music lovers can enjoy Boomtown Festival a mere 20-minutes away, vinyl-only DJ sets at Overdraft, silent discos in Winchester Cathedral and live music from new acts across the city.

Film lovers should head to the Everyman Cinema, housed within a former chapel, to enjoy the latest films or throwbacks in one of the most romantic cinemas in the country. For live comedy or shows, Winchester Theatre Royal, The Arc or Chesil Theatre are the places to keep an eye on. You can also watch spectacular outdoor performances across the city as part of the summer Hat Fair.

Food

From on-the-go street food to an extravagant graduation meal, there is something for every craving and every budget in Winchester. Food is taken so seriously in the city that despite having the usual favourites and our independent eateries available, there is still an almost constant stream of markets, pop-ups and food festivals.

Our favourites include giant Neapolitan pizza at Pi; sushi, bao and kimbap at Bento Factory; Malaysian street food at Lucky Lychee; and the pies at Piecaramba.

9
10

Drinks

Enjoy a drink at one of the oldest pubs in England, the Royal Oak, or experience being served a cocktail in a shell at Incognito! Perhaps you would prefer to try a mocktail with ingredients foraged from the local area, and British recipes that were almost lost to history, at Proudfoot & Co. Winchester’s café culture rivals the best in Europe. You will have no problem getting your coffee exactly how you like it. Grab a cuppa or hot chocolate on-the-go as you take the 10-15 minute walk from the city centre to the University.

Shopping

Up and down the High Street and nestled along Winchester’s picturesque side streets, not only will you find an array of big name stores but also a treasure trove of nearly 200 independent businesses. Chase any winter blues away with a wander around Winchester’s renowned Christmas Market in the Cathedral Close where you will find a range of vendors set up in the pretty wooden chalets.

Travel and transport

Winchester is centrally located in the South of England. With London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Oxford all easily accessible, and direct lines that stretch to Coventry, Birmingham and Manchester, you’ve got a great chance to expand your horizons via train, car, coach or plane. Not only is that great for the odd weekend trip or heading home, it also opens up a wider world of potential work placements for you.
