STUDENT CAPTURES JEWELLERY STORE RAID ON CAMERA
PAGES 37 & 39
ROSS HANVIDGE
AN AUDACIOUS daylight robbery was captured on camera by a student in Glasgow’s city centre on the 24th of September. Liam Dargie was on his way to college when he just happened to be passing by the Argyll Arcade when the sound of breaking glass was heard. The digital media student whipped out his phone and caught four masked men running away from the arcade before fleeing down an alleyway and escaping in a getaway car. The robbery happened around midday and stunned shoppers on one of Scotland’s busiest high streets. It was filmed and photographed by many of those who witnessed the events unfold. Dargie’s video which was taken directly outside the arcade shows the men, dressed in black with balaclavas covering their faces, sprinting from the scene and shouting at passers-by to get out of the way. One of them, wielding an axe, can be heard screaming at the crowds of people in the street and threatening to kill them. The student compared it to Grand Theft Auto, he said, “I saw the masked men running out of the arcade carrying a sledgehammer and what looked like a hatchet. They ran out of the smoke filled arcade and into the side street.” The thirty-one second video went viral on the internet, receiving over ten and a half thousand likes and nearly eight thousand shares on facebook. Despite the fact that the robbers failed in their attempts to break into the Mappin and Webb, Laing and Lewis Grant jewellery stores the crooks did
make off with a significant haul from the Rox shop. It is estimated they collected a loot of around £200,000 worth of watches and also damaged display windows and some other items of jewellery. As of yet, no arrests have been made as police continue their investigations into the dramatic heist. Thanks to the videos taken by Dargie and other passers-by, the suspects have been identified as white males of around 5ft 8in and of medium build. Witnesses are still being encouraged to come forward with any information that might be helpful as the authorities look to track down the criminals. Police identified a white Volkswagen Golf as one of the vehicles involved in the raid, believed to have been stolen and then abandoned in nearby Townhead, Glasgow after the getaway. This was clearly a well-planned operation by the bold crooks but authorities hope to trace them down soon. As well as the captured videos, the internet is expected to play a big part in bringing these thieves to justice. If, as expected, they try and sell the goods online or on the foreign market then specialist web investigators will scour the net and look at sourcing the origins and locations of those involved and eventually jailing the perpetrators. The Argyll Arcade is home to more than thirty jewellers and diamond merchants. The security systems of the stores that were targeted helped to deter the criminals after a Laing

GLASGOW STUDENTS SHOW SUPPORT FOR OCCUPY HONG KONG MOVEMENT ZOE MACNAUGHTON
PICS: TERRENCE LAU
ON THE 1st of October, university students in Glasgow demonstrated in support of Hong Kong’s prodemocracy movement from 11am outside the Glasgow University Library, and from 6pm at George Square.
The students proclaimed they stood ‘United for Democracy’, and worked to persuade the people of Glasgow to sign a petition in support of their cause. ‘United for Democracy: Global Solidarity with Hong
Kong’ is a world-wide, student-based association that has been formed in reaction to the events that have been unfolding in Hong Kong over the last month and a half. In September, the NPCSC (Standing
Committee of the National People’s Congress) agreed to set up its own committee to elect suitable electoral candidates for the public to vote on, denying them
