Unquowa Community

A word from o U r H e A d of S c H ool

On the first Monday morning of December, I arrived at school to see that our resident Winterfest “Fairies” had secretly stopped by over the weekend to hang the Winterfest banners on the ceiling of our gym. This year two of our students, a seventh grader and a kindergartener, had decided to build a fairy trap to see if they could catch one of the clever fairies in the act, but all that was left behind in their trap was a bit of fairy dust. Trying to outwit a fairy is simply a fool’s errand.

Though we all know it is make-believe, I love watching our kids respond to the slow transformation of our gym into a medieval castle, and I love watching those first few rough rehearsals - kids coming to the gym with lyrics and harmonies in their heads, eager to sing them while adding the choreography that Mrs. Kirk has designed to bring the piece to life. It’s the first attempt for dozens of kids to go through tying music to movement. I always watch these rehearsals, knowing that every time our students do a run-through, they will get one step closer to the powerful synchronicity they’ll achieve during the final Thursday evening performance of Winter Festival. I watch it build every year, and the process is heartbreakingly beautiful and comforting in its certainty. Each year I feel so lucky to witness not just the end result but the magical process that leads up to it.

Winter Festival is always an amazing event because it’s the culmination of a month of learning and mastering songs, dances and lines that leads to an evening of every student “nailing it” in a way that is magical. Each year I am ever more grateful to our performing arts staff: Performing Arts Department chair, Megan Kirk, who writes the script and designs the choreography specifically with our students in mind; David Coe, who orchestrates live music and leads his talented students in playing it; and Lloyd Mitchell, who trains a tech crew who keeps the lights and sound professionally on cue. A host of others, including tireless and talented parents, add the touches that make this night beyond belief. Our entire school and returning alums who join in the closing traditional songs at the program’s end bond over its performance each year.

This year’s show is the first in almost a decade that enlists a consistent songbook, that of the contemporary rock band Queen - with major liberties taken around lyrics, of course! The last and only time we did so was in 2014 for Winterfest: Come Together, when our entire score was built around music by The Beatles. The power of the scores of both shows is that they include memorable songs that both parents and students can sing along to.

We can all benefit from building new memories, laughing with friends and experiencing the pride of creating a performance that provides both magic and memories for ourselves, our families and our friends. May you enjoy the tale we spin for you tonight, may you sing along if the spirit moves you, and may you and your family have a New Year filled with hope, joy and peace.

All the best, Sharon Lauer

BREAKING FREE

The kingdom of Unquowa was a joyous place. Full of laughter, singing, dancing, and most importantly a place where all people lived with an unafraid spirit! That was until the day Duke Siri, and his trusty sidekick Alexa, found their way into the kingdom walls. Since the kingdom of Unquowa is full of kind and trustworthy people, the Duke was welcomed into the community to act as their new royal magician. Little did the people know he was only there to attempt to take control of their entire kingdom. A vision of the future gave Duke Siri the brilliantly, evil idea to create smartphones to give to the members of the Unquowa community. He would use these devices to get into the minds of all of the citizens! Luckily, the king’s two brave children did not fall into Duke Siri’s trap. They refused his magical gift and decided to get help from their bohemian friends who lived outside of the kingdom walls. Would their friends, Freddie, Roger, Brian and John be able to help the kingdom break free from these devices? Would the kingdom of Unquowa be able to find their way back to the joyous place that it used to be?

A Word from the Directors

Winterfest is one of the most magical times of the year at the Unquowa School. The joy that this show brings to the entire community is something that you can’t quite put into words. I love seeing every single student in our school working together to create a magical experience for all. From the singers, dancers, actors, and instrumentalists to the tech crew; each and every student plays a role in making this show come to life.

When I was brainstorming ideas for this year’s Winterfest script, I was inspired by what we constantly see around us in the world at large. Everywhere you look, people are glued to their phones and devices! The students and I are very excited to tell a tale that will bring a message to the audience about being more present in their lives. To “break free” from the ties of our smartphones. When choosing the music for this story, songs by Queen just seemed to work perfectly! (After rewriting many of the lyrics of course!) I am extremely excited for you to see this year’s Winterfest and to witness all of the hard work we have put into this amazing show!

What a fantastic time of year this is at Unquowa! It’s so great to see the students singing, dancing and laughing together, and the smiles from teachers as they walk through the gym with a rehearsal in progress. No less remarkable is the physical transformation of the school as thrones, banners and castles appear seemingly out of nowhere! The instrumental ensembles are in fine form and excited for Winterfest 2023. I believe this will be the most rockin’ WF ever! Thanks to all who have played a part onstage and off in making this incredible Winterfest come to life!
