LETTER FROM FACULTY ADVISORS

Working with the Lower School Art and Literary Club members on Unquowazine Volume 6 has been such a pleasure. They have worked tirelessly, each contributing their unique skills and talents, on various stages of magazine development. This year, the collective array of work from the Lower School is truly impressive

In addition, the Unquowazine staff contributed some original work of their own in the form of an interview with Mr Casey, a comic, and some amazing artwork.

Together with their staff, Mila and Arianna gathered much of the work themselves. They did an outstanding job of being mindful of each student's work while honoring its authenticity. As their advisor, I guided them and gave them structure and support.

Kudos to all for their hard work and dedication!

Mrs. Engelke

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Unquowazine Vol. 6. We are glad to show you our fantastic magazine. We have been working hard to create this year's Unquowazine volume for the last couple of months.

We have collected a lot of fantastic work from Lower School students, from Pre-K to 4th. In Pre-K, they submitted their fabulous fairy tale reader responses to us. Kindergarten gave us everything, from Polar Bears to vacation reflections and MLK pieces. First grade gave us some fantastic opinion pieces, and second grade wrote small-moment stories, biographies, reader responses, and some multiplication craftivities. Third-grade submitted some wonderful book reviews, poetry, and non-fiction books. Finally, the fourth grade sent in realistic fiction, persuasive writing, and informational ebooks. Many students participated in our first Unquowazine incentive by contributing pictures of their favorite animals or writing about a favorite moment at Unquowa.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone for contributing to Unquowazine, including our staff. They contributed original work in the form of interviews, comics, and artwork. In addition, Claire and Breya did an outstanding job on the cover. Lastly, we would like to thank Mrs. E for guiding us in making Unquowazine Volume 6.

Thank you for reading!

FORGIVENESS

“Hey!” yelled Astrid Chloe snatched Astrid’s phone, waving it around like a flag. Astrid is Chloe's sister. Chloe is a twelve-year-old girl.

“Tomorrow is the first day of school, and Mom said no phone and that you need a detox, “ shouted Chloe Nuh uh!” screamed Astrid Yuh huh!” screamed Chloe. “Girls tone it down,” shouted Mama from the other room. Yes, Mom,” they said.

The next day, Chloe woke up to her sister fighting with her mom She didn't know what they were fighting about, but she was used to it. By the time they stopped fighting, Chloe was ready for school.

As she waited for the bus, her palms began to sweat, and her head started to ache.

She walked into her classroom and sat down. This was her third year here, anyway. At recess, a girl walked up to Chloe. She had dark brown hair and beautiful hazel eyes and was wearing a pink shirt. “ Hi, my name is Mal. I'm the new kid. Your Chloe, right?” she questioned.

142 UNQUOWAZINE 2024 MILA GRADE 4

“Yeah I am why?” Chloe replied, “My name is Mal, and I was wondering if you wanted to maybe play with me, do you like playing soccer?” asked Mal. “Yes, I do!”Chloe said excitedly.

So, the two friends played all throughout recess and became best friends throughout time

One cool winter day, the friends went to the playground and played soccer as always, while Chloe was about to shoot a goal, somebody tripped her, and everyone gasped in shock as Chloe’s face dug deeper and deeper into the cool wet snow.

Of course, it was Juliana and her minions, the school bullies. No one dared to speak up or disobey them, or they knew there would be consequences, “Oopsies, sorry.”Juliana said sarcastically as she walked away. Mal just sat there, and ran off to go play with Patricia, her other friend

When Chloe got off the bus, she ran inside and upstairs to her room.

The next morning she woke up to the sweet smell of pancakes.”Thank god it's a Saturday,” Chloe said in relief as she walked down the stairs

As she got to the end of the stack of pancakes, she heard a bang on the door. She went to answer the door and found Mal standing at the door instead of the mail person “Look, I'm really sorry Patricia was telling me to play with her, and I didn't want to get in the middle of it. I never meant to hurt your feelings." Mal apologized. “Uhm, first of all, Mal, how do you know where I live? And second of all, I forgive you ” Chloe said, “THANK

GOD! Also, to answer your question we've had like fifty playdates.”Mal said, laughing. “Also, can I have some pancakes?” Mal asked, “of course,” Chloe said, laughing

James’s Soccer Skills

Once there was someone named James who really wanted to join a soccer team but he didn't think he was good enough He asked his parents, and his parents were fine with him joining a travel soccer team He felt very scared that he was not going to make the team When he got to the tryout, he really felt scared, but he felt ready. He just couldn't stop thinking about it; he was so scared. When he was about to get on the field, he was walking slowly. He just took a deep breath and walked onto the field. His dad took him in and saw the coach. “Hello,” his dad said. His coach said hello back to him. They were about to start the tryouts. His coach got the ball. “Hello,” the coach said to James. “My name is Coach Josh,” he said. Coach Josh really sounded nice, but suddenly Coach Josh walked away from the field. “What is he doing?” James said “I don't know,” James's dad said. Coach Josh, for some reason, didn’t know what he was doing All he did was walk away

145 JASPER GRADE 4 GRADE 4 — REALISTIC FICTION

James started to get mad at Coach Josh for just walking off the field James, without asking his dad, ran to the locker room where Coach Josh went. His dad yelled at James to come back, but James didn’t listen, so his dad ran to get him.

He saw Coach Josh peeking in a locker the first second he got in, and Coach Josh screamed,"Come out!!!” so James rushed out to his dad, looking scared, almost crying.

They went to the front and talked to the head of the soccer club and told him what they saw The head of the soccer club, James, and his dad rushed to where Coach Josh was, and the second they got there, coach Josh said,” All I was doing was taking my phone from my locker for a second!” The head of the soccer club told him to get back to tryouts.

The coach yelled, “fine, I’ll get back to it.” When they got to the field.

Coach Josh felt mad at the head, but he had no choice, he just did it He decided to wait until the head left, but the head knew what he was doing.

Coach Josh said, "Get out of here so I can Coach the tryout by myself!!!!”, but the head didn’t go, so Coach Josh just started the tryout for James.

The first thing Coach Josh did was test his attack James felt very scared. Coach Josh knew, so he wanted to do something hard for James, so James took a deep breath. Before he was done with the deep breath, coach Josh suddenly passed the ball to James. He stopped the ball with his feet. Then there was a moment of silence James had no idea what to do Finally

Coach Josh tried to steal, but James got ahead of Coach Josh James felt

happy. Finally, James scored, and Coach Josh smiled, and said that James is definitely going to get a spot on a team. James felt so happy that he was going to get to play many soccer games. James’s dad felt very proud of what James did in his Tryout They went home, and James felt very tired, so the second he got home he took a big rest, and stayed until he had to go down for dinner, but as soon as he finished his dinner he got in bed, and slept in very late in the morning.

When he got up at 10:30 in the morning he went down stairs nobody was there he saw breakfast on the table suddenly he could hear footsteps walking down the stairs, and it was his dad shouting,”What are you doing? Did you sleep in for three hours? I forgot you have school!!!!!”

Becoming an Older Cousin

I was in the car with my mom, and we were on a call with my uncle, aunt, grandparents, and my mom. I lowered my voice and listened carefully to the big news. It turns out that I was becoming an older cousin.

My mom and I were shocked and happy, but I began to have this weird feeling. My hands began to sweat, and my heart began to beat faster than ever because I was about to become an older cousin, but I was also happy for my uncle and aunt.

The next day, I thought about it for a while. Three months had passed. It was the gender reveal party. I was so nervous about what to put on pink or blue. I went with a pink skirt and a blue shirt. It was time to go to the gender reveal party, so I went in my uncle's car. It was so exciting the whole time. It was time to open the big balloon box. My heart pounded.

151 ARIANNA GRADE 4 GRADE 4 — REALISTIC FICTION

It looked like my uncle and aunt probably wanted a girl because my uncle had two sons. My uncle was wearing a blue shirt and a pink pair of pants. It was a little funny. Finally, there was a countdown “321!” My aunt’s cousin opened the box, and pink balloons came out.

Everyone yelled, " A girl!” “Yes!” I yelled. My uncle took off his blue shirt, and under it was a pink shirt. Everyone laughed.

Five months had passed, and my aunt said one more month to go. To my surprise, one more month past November 10th, she was born. I went to visit her, and she was beautiful. She was five months old I always go out to eat with her and my uncle

The months have passed so fast. I've gone to the park with her. I went to the pool with her. I've seen her sleep. She was four months old when I saw her crawl She was so tiny when I met her at 48 hours old. I have carried her, but each time she gets heavier. I am so excited to see her each time.

Please Make Old Republic Movie Disney

Please make Star Wars The Old Republic movies. It's all we need and you have the money and even if it makes you broke it will make a lot of money so you won't be broke anymore after it comes out Honestly I would prefer to have it as a movie instead of a show. Because if it were to be a show, it would take less time, but we would have to wait for the season 1 story to be fully complete. However, if it were a movie, although it would take a long time, like maybe six years, and movies are three and a half hours long, we would get the full story instantly when it comes out. It is helpful because a lot of people (like me) don't know the Old Republic story.

It would have a lot of world building introducing many new planets and ships It would also introduce many characters we haven't seen in

156 UNQUOWAZINE 2024 GRAHAM GRADE 4 1

live action yet, and a lot of powerful characters such as Darth Malgus, Darth Revan, Darth Malak, Darth Nihilus, and Darth Bane

My final reason concerns one of the most mysterious characters in Star Wars: Darth Revan. Many people don't know much about him, and I think a movie or show about him would be pretty helpful for people who like the character and want to know a lot about him.

my final reason is to make this movie good, you have to make the characters powerful but not too power ful, as then it will make it impossible for the Sith to lose and disappear for 1,000 years, and actually, that was not my reason so my reason was, please don't hire different directors for each movie, please use the same director for all the movies because they will make the characters all over the place, from oh this character is super cool! Oh I hate this character. What the heck is this character doing now? Which side is he on, good or bad?

And that's why the hardest character to exe cute in the movies is Darth Revan because one thing is we actually don't know if he’s a good character or bad

Why Modern Computer Games are Boring!!!

If you are unaware of the modern gaming industry, well, I have a lot to tell you, unfortunate soul, so sit back, eat some food, and let's begin!!! Modern computer games lack a good story, good characters, and interesting abilities and functions. For these reasons, modern computer games are not good. They lack a sense of diversity and uniqueness because they feel the same anyway!!!

Fortnite was a game released in 2017. Help Club Penguins soul :(. The problem is Fortnight is not a well-crafted game. It is not creative, and it often uses the same model but simply makes very few changes Meanwhile, you have Garden Warfare with character variants, amazing costumes, and beautiful storytelling Modern Computer Games do not have good updates. With Garden Warfare, the updates like Legends of the Lawn and Zombies are interesting and include promotions with Aquafina and Cheetos

The characters feel bland and are practically reskins. Meanwhile the variants in Garden Warfare are unique Also they are b autifu While Fortnite skins are UGLY!!! Would you rather have a reskin of a pink bear or the characters at the bottom Whats the difference?

beautiful:) perfect {:D drippy <:)

In a third or first-person game, it is important to have a fun list of game modes and a fun character lineup Anyways, back to the game modes in Garden Warfare, there is team vanquish, garden ops, taco bandit, gardens and graveyard, vanquish confirmed, gnome bomb, mixed mode, and the illusive pain train So let

me tell you, Fortnite has the most bland game modes I've ever played. Plus, the only good game mode is creative because you can make fun games that don't feel like Fortnite

Garden Warfare is better with more content than Fortnite

A Koala is Born

When a koala is born it has no eyes, fur, and it is the size of a jellybean. Their ears are not completley developed yet. They stay in their mother's pouch for seven months. They leave between the ages 1 and 3 to take care of themselves. When a koala is a baby, its mother needs to protect it because owls might try to swoop in and eat it. They need to be extra careful. Baby Koalas also sometimes like to sleep and play in gum trees.

The breeding runs from September to March, and this is when koalas are active. Females breed at 3 or 4 years old. They can only have one joey a year, but not all female koalas breed every year. Some female koalas only produce joeys for 2 to 3 years. Isn't that interesting?

Koala Danger

Koalas need to stay extra careful because there could be danger in a lot of places they go. A baby koala needs to stay safe because an owl might try to swoop in and take the baby koala. Other koalas could die or be badly hurt because people can hurt them. For example, people can cut down the trees that koalas live in. Koalas also eat the leaves from those trees and they would starve without any food. Koalas can also be hit by cars and die. so they should always be extra careful.

Chapter 2:

History of Skiing

The history of skiing is way more interesting than you might think. Did you know that the oldest documented evidence of skiing is found in the region of Norway and Sweden from primitive carvings which goes all the way back to 5000 B.C.? Until the 1800’s skiing was primarily used only for transportation, it was after the turn of the 18th century that it became a recreational sport. Commercially the popularity of skiing holidays took off in the 19th century which increased enormously during the mid-1900s until today.

Did you know that the word ‘Skiing’ is the only six-letter word in the English language with a double 'I' exactly in the middle. And another fact about skiing is that Skiing is ONE of the fastest sports on land that has no assistance from a motorized vehicle or anything like that. In 2006, Simone Origone set a world speed skiing record at 156.2 miles per hour!

Each offers its unique charm, terrain, and ski activities. Did you know that Skiing has been around for thousands of years and is believed to have originated in Scandinavia around 6,000 years ago.

Chapter 4:

TIps & Tricks

Tips & Tricks, something many skiers across the globe need more help on. Once you learn all Tips & Tricks you'll learn to ski more effortlessly. Here are some Tips & Tricks many skiers use including myself. The tips will get more useful overtime. Tip #1 Beginners usually go fast uncontrollably, how you stop it is by pointing your skis and torso to the hill, and not towards the bottom of the hill. Make your turns a little bit longer so you are traversing farther across the mountain. Once you have caught yourself, re-angle your skis and body towards the bottom of the hill again, and carry on! (or just make a pizza shape and take bigger turns) Tip #2 What a lot of beginners do is they look down at their skis and not up ahead of them, that is a huge red flag. Looking down at your skis will prevent you from seeing ahead of you, which will most likely result in you crashing into a tree, pole, or another skier.

Instead look up ahead of you at all costs. Tip #3 Whenever you ski you take the risk of hurting yourself. Although it doesn't happen that often, the injuries could be bad. The overall incidence of injuries sustained while skiing is relatively low. Common injury types in skiing are fractures, dislocations, sprains, contusions, lacerations, and wounds. Common areas of injury include the head, neck, spinal cord, shoulder, thumb, knee, and ankle. Tip #4 Have fun. What is skiing without fun? It doesn't matter if you get first in a race or beat your friends down the mountain, all that matters is that you have fun. Enjoy yourself, have a blast! And have fun. Having fun is the main part of skiing, and skiing isn't skiing without having fun.
