Contents Homes & Gardens Wet Rooms: the ulitmate open-plan bathroom Hello and welcome back to The Urban Fox. At the beginning of this year we announced that we planned to take the magazine in a new and exciting direction and from next month we will be Bigger! Brighter! Better! We will be enlarging our format, transforming our design, revamping our features and increasing our distribution to 10,000 selected homes within the Stoneygate, Clarendon Park, Knighton, Oadby, Evington Village and Aylestone Village areas of Leicester. In this month’s final A5, we bring you our customary array of inspiring lifestyle features, from fashion advice for men (p20) and buying and cooking the ‘The Perfect Steak’ (p26) to revolutionising your golf swing (p14). If you enjoy your sport accompanied by good food and celebrity guests, Gold Events is hosting a testimonial dinner for Tigers, England and British Lions scrum-half Harry Ellis on 8th September, at Leicester Tigers RFC on Welford Road (p15). For details of other Gold Events over the forthcoming months, turn to pages 24-25. Leicester’s Walkers Stadium plays host to this year’s Leicester Business Exhibition on 29th September. HOMES & GARDENS
Wet-rooms: the ultimate open-plan bathroom The wet-room has become one of the latest must have features in the modern-day bathroom. The increase in demand for showering over bathing has led to improved products for invigorating shower experiences. Not only do wet-rooms offer a luxurious setting for your daily ablutions, but they deliver a much more functional solution for the less-able or more mature user, whilst also adding value to your home. The beauty of a wet-room is it creates a seamless look, which can make a bathroom appear much bigger and avoids the feeling of being enclosed inside a box. It is the ultimate open-plan bathroom. Improved technology means wet-rooms can be fitted in any home – even upstairs in homes with floorboards. If installed correctly a wet-room offers a far more reliable barrier than a standard shower tray and enclosure, where only a bead of silicone acts as a water barrier.
There are different ways to create your wet-room. Functionally, the base of the shower has to have a built-in fall to direct water to a drain, and the surrounding area (including the walls) is ‘tanked’ with a waterproof membrane to create a watertight seal for the whole room. For flooring, tiles are the favoured option. Using mosaics is often easier but improvements on drain solutions means larger format tiles can be ‘kited’ for a more minimal look. Another solution is a ‘flush to floor’ shower tray which can be provided in various colours and sizes to match floor tiles. The lack of grout lines makes it much easier to maintain and clean. The shower screen is another aspect to consider. A true wet-room wouldn’t have one, but often this isn’t practical. Fixed glass panels (as opposed to shower enclosures) are the best way to create a seamless minimal look; they allow the walk-in experience whilst screening the rest August 2010 of the bathroom to avoid splashes.
The beauty of a wet-room is it creates a seamless look, which can make a bathroom appear much bigger and avoids the feeling of being enclosed.
Under-floor heating is a worthwhile luxury. As well has providing important warmth, it dries the floor much more quickly and can be used for the walls of a shower, making it warm to lean against. Finally, use mould-resistant Kerapoxy grout, and check the capacity of the drain is suitable for the volume of water from your chosen showerhead. Ultimately, a wet-room offers an improved visual and functional showering experience but remember to seek the advice of experts to ensure it’s done properly and the maximum effect is achieved.

Irene Elias has a regular clinic at Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital. For more information about Orthotics please call 0116 276 9401 or visit www.nuffieldhealth. com/leicesterhospital.
Are you walking comfortably? resin casts of the feet, following a detailed examination of the feet and legs by a Podiatrist. This is called a Biomechanical Assessment and is an essential part of having Orthotics prescribed. Wearing Orthotics often results in a dramatic improvement or What are the possible causes of my total resolution in symptoms. Irene Elias is a Musculo-skeletal Podiatrist and Orthotics Specialist offering all kinds of non-surgical options for the most common foot problems. Here, she answers her patient’s most common questions.
[foot, heel, knee, hip, back] pain?
When you walk, the first point of contact with the ground is your feet. If your foot is misaligned and rolls too far one way or the other, this causes a chain reaction in your lower limb from your foot through your knee, into your hip and into your lower back. This chain reaction can cause the body to compensate for the misalignment causing pain in any area of the lower limb and back.
What treatment is available?
The most effective treatment method is a custom made Orthotic, an individually prescribed device, worn in the shoes to correct abnormal foot function. Orthotics compensate for impaired foot function by controlling abnormal motion in the joints of the foot. Orthotics are usually very comfortable and are made by an Orthotic Laboratory from
Which conditions can be successfully treated with Orthotics? Plantar Fasciitis Biomechanically related back, hip and knee pain l Conservative treatment of early hallux valgus l Metatarsalgia l Morton’s neuroma l Hallux limitus l Shin splints l Gastrocnemius equinus l Chondromalacia patella l Achilles Tendonitis l Rigid high-arched feet l Flat, over-pronated feet l Plantar corns and calluses l In-toeing/out toeing gait l Feet affected by diabetes August 2010 and rheumatoid arthritis l l
Who can benefit from a custom made Orthotic?
A custom made Orthotic is suitable for people of all ages and requirements. They are tailor made to your exact needs meaning that elite sportsmen through to the less mobile can benefit. Children can also be helped by this extra level of support during their growth, helping to prevent the development of a misalignment.
How much can I expect to pay?
You can expect to pay around £120 for your first appointment, £180 for a full biomechanical assessment and a casting of your feet and follow up appointments usually cost around £70.

Perfecting the Golf Swing In my last column I wrote about the importance of a sound set-up routine. Once this is released on a regular basis, the correct movements and positions of the club throughout the golf swing can be achieved. Constructing a full golf swing from scratch involves many key movements that need to be learned through ‘feel’. Golf like many other sports, requires hand and eye co-ordination and whilst making a swing, our eyes must stay looking at the ball until it has been struck. People learn new skills in a variety of ways. Through a verbal explanation I can discuss with a pupil the required movement. Through a visual demonstration I can show a pupil the required movement. Best of all through kinaesthetic application or ‘feel’ I can move the pupil into the required position. All of the above help to aid a pupil’s learning but it is through ‘feel’ where golf is best learnt. Enter the Explanar! This piece of apparatus is in my mind, without doubt the finest training aid available
within golf. The Explanar is a large metal hoop used in conjunction with a weighted power roller. To use this a pupil will step inside the hoop, rest the power roller on the hoop, take the grip and stance and then start the movement of rolling the roller back and through in a smooth rhythmical motion, turning golf swing theory into feelings. The benefit of using a weighted roller as opposed to a normal club gives increased muscle memory. The Explanar is versatile and easy to use for both men and women, left and right handed golfers and those between 5’ and 6’6’’. It helps beginners build a good golf swing in a short space of time, as well as assisting established golfers to eradicate ingrained swing faults. More experienced golfers can use Explanar to exercise their swing, to hit intentional draw, fade, high and low shots and to maintain their already reliable golf swing.
combination of Explanar and the power roller will help strengthen the golfing muscles, increase flexibility and lengthen your golfing life. So what are you waiting for? Book your Explanar experience today.
Above all it works as a golf fitness system, as with regular use the

From time to time we all need a helping hand, and false lashes can be your new best friend! For that special event strip lashes can increase volume and curl.
The Eyes Have It! The eyes are the ‘window to the soul’, or so the saying goes. It’s no wonder then that beautiful lashes and perfectly shaped brows are the basics in regular grooming regimes.
Eye Brows Our eyebrows are the frame to our face and a little TLC goes a long way. Creating the perfect brow for your face can have both a lifting and opening effect on the eyes. Adding a little colour by way of tinting, instantly lends a glamorous elegance to your look. There is no ‘one shape suits all’ solution. Your brows should be as unique as you, so it’s a good idea to visit a professional initially. Whether waxing, tweezing, threading or a combination of these techniques, they should work with you to design a brow that you can easily maintain at home between regular salon appointments. Tinting will require a patch test prior to your
first treatment to ensure suitability of the products used.
Lashes To me, lashes are the height of femininity. Black and glossy, curled or lifted, they are the finishing touch to eye makeup. If you have fair colouring, more often than not your lashes won’t do you any justice at all. Again tinting is a great way to visibly define the shape of your eye. Considering lash perming? This process curls the lashes and is best on long, but straight lashes. If your lashes are shorter, the more recently introduced lifting procedures would be more effective.
False Lashes
enhance your makeup with some va va voom, that is easily removed at the end of the night. Lash clusters can be applied for a more permanent effect (up to 4 weeks), although a little more homecare is needed. This is a popular option for Brides-to-Be and holidays. Individual lash extensions can last up to 12 weeks and are applied using a medical grade adhesive. They take longer to apply, need specific homecare and regular salon maintenance (typically every 2-3 weeks) is needed to infill where lashes naturally shed. A more costly alternative, but well worth the effort if you have the time and budget.
From time to time we all need a helping hand, and false lashes can be your new best friend! For that special event strip lashes can increase volume and curl. This is August 2010 an inexpensive yet effective way to

FASHION & BEAUTY
To know if a garment suits you, you need to know how it’s supposed to fit.
If the clothes fit... As an image consultant I get as many questions from men as from women, if not more. What’s business causal? Shirt in or out? When to wear a tie? In our society we have been brought up to believe it isn’t manly to be concerned about clothes, yet we are inundated with messages like ‘Image is everything’, ‘women love a well-dressed man’, etc. So men, it’s not surprising that some of you are lost when it comes to style. You know it’s important to understand it, yet many of you will confess that you have no idea how to carry it off and end up spending too much money on clothes that don’t look good or relying on the woman in your life. Really to understand style you need to understand yourself. It is about accommodating individuality rather than following the crowd. Wear pink because you know it flatters your skin tone and fits in with the rest of your wardrobe, not because everyone else is wearing pink. Find styles that suit your body shape and
personality and avoid the ones that don’t. One of the most important tips I can give you is make sure your clothes fit you! If you are bulky, tight clothing will emphasise your flabby bits and loose ones will make you look bigger. And if you are slender - too tight you will appear bony, too big and you’ll be lost in mounds of fabric. Nothing looks cheaper or less stylish than badly fitting clothes. To know if a garment suits you, you need to know how it’s supposed to fit. And believe me there are many rules out there for almost every article of male clothing. Take the shirt for example… l
l
Your shirt’s collar tips should be covered by a jacket’s lapels or sweater.
And believe me these things are noticed. So to save money, impress women and employers; to have a streamlined wardrobe filled with clothes that will prove stylish and useful for years to come - find out more about the rules of dress and how to make an impact. Know yourself, your colouring, your shape. All importantly maintain you individuality.
Your shirt seam should meet at the shoulder.
Around half an inch of your shirt 2010 collar should be visible August above jackets at the back.

Kristen Scott Thomas plays an American Journalist living in Paris who is commissioned to write an article on the infamous Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup, the capture and imprisonment of thousands of Jewish families in Paris in 1942. As she investigates she finds her life entwined with that of Sarah, a young girl whose family was torn apart during the round-up. Kristen is astonishing, delivering a poised and graceful performance full of compassion and steely determination. The film plays like a cracking mix of crimethriller and enthralling drama, highly recommended.
Everyone’s favourite roly-poly Irishman Brendan Gleeson returns in The Guard, a hysterical take on the buddy-cop movie. Gleeson is Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a big cop in a small town with a weakness for sampling the local vices of drugs and prostitutes. After a series of deaths, the FBI send by-the-book agent Wendell (Don Cheadle) to Boyle’s village to track down international drug smugglers who are using it as a base. Billed as “Bad Lieutenant meets Father Ted”, the chemistry between the two is hysterical, and in the best tradition the chalk and cheese cops must learn to work together. The language can get pretty choice, but fans of films like In Bruges will be in absolute heaven.
The Skin I Live In (Fri 26 Aug –Thu 1 Sep) Pedro Almodovar, the godfather of weird and wonderful Spanish Cinema, returns with what could be his masterpiece. It stars Antonio Banderas as Robert, a successful Plastic Surgeon who hides a dark secret. Haunted by his wife’s death in a car crash, Robert has become obsessed with creating a skin impervious to harm. His luxurious home is in fact a laboratory and prison for his test subject Vera. Almodovar knows the bizarre is needed to shake people out of their malaise and pay attention and this film doesn’t hold back. Drenched in rich colour and superbly acted including a ferocious performance from Banderas, this is mind-blowing art cinema at its finest. That’s your lot for August, coming up in September we have some absolute crackers with Michael Fassbender starring in Jane Eyre, while Gary Oldman takes on the iconic role of George Smiley in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Plus our usual programme of the best in World and Independent Cinema. BOX OFFICE: 0116 242 2800
SPORTS fans have never had it so good at Loughborough College’s Futures Restaurant. Giants from the worlds of rugby, football and cricket take centre stage in an awesome autumn that has Leicestershirebased former restaurant owner Chris Tandy purring: “You can certainly say the secret is now out!” Chris, who runs gold events with business partner and former Leicester City chief executive Barrie Pierpoint, adds: “If you’ve not been to Futures before, you are missing out. It’s a lovely intimate dining and social venue – the sort that, once discovered, you’ll want to visit again and again. “Now we’re giving you the best possible opportunity to indulge yourself with a great series of events.”
It all kicks off with former Leicester Tigers and England legend Darren Garforth hosting World Cup breakfasts on Saturday, September 10 and Saturday, October 1. More expensive isn’t necessarily better. Meat should be maroon with yellowish fat and the meat marbled with fat that will melt during cooking
The Perfect Steak Why is steak at home never as good as in a restaurant? Is it the meat? Perhaps they’ve better frying pans? Or is it just the way they cook it? Well, it’s probably all three. Here are my few simple rules for cooking the perfect steak at home.
THE PAN - I can’t stress enough how important this is. A thickbased or ridged pan keeps heat high and evenly distributed.
QUALITY – More expensive isn’t
OIL THE STEAK, NOT THE PAN - Steak needs just a
necessarily better. Meat should be maroon with yellowish fat and the meat marbled with fat that will melt during cooking, basting and flavouring the meat from the inside. Dark meat with creamy fat is ‘aged’, therefore tender and flavourful. Supermarket meat is generally pinky-red with white fat which consumers think of as ‘fresh’ and therefore good. Some offer ‘aged’ meat – but at a premium. I haunt the ‘quick sell’ counters as not only do I get a bargain but it’s much better meat!
SEASONING - Don’t add salt
STEAK WITH STILTON SAUCE l
HOT PAN – The pan must be
sufficiently hot. If the pan’s too cool, the steak will release its juices and stew rather than fry. l
little oil. Use one with a high smoke point E.g. sunflower oil.
TIMING - Use a digital timer for accuracy. A minute seems ages when pan-watching. ‘RELAX’ THE MEAT - The golden rule that changes steak from good to great! Lay cooked steaks on foil, season with salt and wrap. ‘Relax’ the meat for 10–15 minutes somewhere warm (side or back of the hob).
l
l
Fry steak to your liking. (As a rough guide, a 3cm thick fillet = 1½ mins per side for rare, 2-3 mins per side for medium and 4 mins per side for well done). Whilst it’s resting, make the sauce by melting together equal quantities of mascarpone and stilton cheeses. Don’t boil the sauce as this will make the cheese grainy. Season to taste (pepper and the merest grind of salt). Serve sauce separately with meat juices poured over the steak – and Enjoy!
COOK AHEAD - Avoid stress
before cooking. It draws the juices from the meat, removing flavour and succulence. Pepper is fine.
and get rid of cooking smells by cooking up to 30 minutes ahead. Then wrap the foil parcel in a clean August 2010 tea towel which acts as a blanket.

Sumptuous South African Wines With a winemaking tradition and history dating back over three and a half centuries, South African wines blend the restrained elegance of the old world with the accessible, fruit driven styles of the new. This makes for varied and exciting wines which reflect the distinctive terroir of South Africa’s diverse wine regions. The stunningly beautiful Cape winelands offer a myriad of different wine styles. From cool climate Sauvignon Blanc and ripe tropical Chardonnay, to the Cape’s most widely planted white grape, the delightful Chenin Blanc. Whilst Pinotage, South Africa’s very own red grape creates wines with richness and layers of flavour, the Cape’s Cabernet Sauvignon is more elegant and rounded. For a red wine with a punch try Shiraz, the perfect partner to South Africa’s many styles of cooking.
2009 Jordan Stellenbosch Chardonnay Price £12.10
Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993. From that first year it was obvious that a new star had been added to the winemaking firmament. They focus on producing fiercely individual wines that combine the fruity accessibility of the New World with the classic elegance of the old. I recently tasted this wine which is a powerful expression of Chardonnay, brimming with fruit flavour and elegance. A buttery toastiness from the oak, rounds off the complex hazelnut and citrus flavours. This is an excellent alternative to much more expensive White Burgundies.
2006 Bellingham Dragon’s Lair
Price £9.59
Originally known as ‘Bellinchamp’ (pretty fields), Bellingham begins its story in 1693 with Hollander Gerrit Janz van Vuuren and his French Huguenot wife, who toiled the virgin soil and planted the first 1000 vines. Centuries later in 1943, pioneer and innovator Bernard Podlashuk, acquired the farm. There were a couple of firsts for Bellingham with the bottling of the first extra dry white wine in the country in 1951 and the first single varietal Shiraz in 1956. The ‘80s and ‘90s saw vineyard developments, cellar extensions and the beginning of Bellingham’s ‘classic-new world’ winemaking philosophy. This wine is a classic Rhône style blend of Shiraz (84%), Mourvdre (11%) and Viognier (5%), from cool vineyards planted in shale soil. Full bodied with rounded tannins, it is a deep rubycoloured wine, layered with black berries, cherries, smoky spices and just a hint of strawberry sweetness.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Simon March

BUSINESS & FINANCE
One option is to start trading as a sole trader (this is quick and simple) and later if the business grows it can be ‘incorporated’ i.e. become limited.
Choosing a Business Structure When you start a business, you have to decide whether to operate as a sole trader or limited company. But how do you decide? SOLE TRADER Operating as a sole trader is the simplest, as all you need to do is notify HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). There are no other formalities. The biggest disadvantage of being a sole trader is that you are personally liable for the business’ debts. If your business fails you will still have to meet all the liabilities of that business. Consequently operating as a sole trader, suits people who are in low risk professions, often working from home and provide services rather than physical goods. LIMITED COMPANY Conversely the main advantage of operating as a limited company is that your personal liability is limited i.e. you are not liable for the business’ debts.
If the business fails, you will lose the assets within that business but your personal assets are protected, unless you have pledged them as security to borrow money from a bank for example (personal guarantee). Operating as a limited company typically suits riskier businesses that have a higher potential to fail and those that require a lot of capital investment (stock, equipment etc.) If your business is looking for outside investment, operating as a limited company is also usually preferable. Forming a limited company is very straight forward, however there is more administration involved in running one and often higher accountancy fees. Also closing down a limited company can be difficult.

Expected profitability. Ability to pay dividends. The amount of investment the business needs.
One option is to start trading as a sole trader (this is quick and simple) and later if the business grows it can be ‘incorporated’ i.e. become limited. A wide range of information and FAQ are available on the HMRC website www.hmrc.gov.uk/businesses/ but for clear, independent advice speak to your accountant. They can consider your individual business circumstances, review your business plans / projections and guide you accordingly.
FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS There is no easy way to tell if you will be financially better off trading asAugusta 2010 sole trader or limited company. This will depend on several factors:
