Hello and welcome back to the November edition of The Urban Fox lifestyle magazine. What an eventful month we’ve had, with the arrival of Grace Aria Lenaghan to the team. Whilst a mere 7lb 10oz, she’s already throwing her weight around The Urban Fox office and making her presence known! It’s hardly surprising then that on my first trip into the city last week I was alarmed that the Christmas Countdown had begun in earnest whilst I have been otherwise engaged. With that in mind this month we offer our readers a taster of all things festive, from the Top 10 Christmas
Toys and Lucy Cufflin’s Little Apple Strudel Puddings, to an array of Christmas activities and events on offer across the city, including the Christmas Lights switch on in the Town Hall Square on the 20th November, carol services, theatre productions, arts and crafts workshops and a seasonal farmers’ market at Gallowtree Gate, on the 8th December. If you plan to start your Christmas preparations early, check out our advertisers for Christmas lunches and party nights, as well as Christmas gift ideas. Need more festive inspiration? Then look out for our guide to Christmas gifts, party dresses and decorations in our December edition, distributed week commencing the 12th December. This month we also focus on healthy living. Overcome those winter blues, with insights from our feature writers on maintaining younger looking skin at any age with ‘10 Years Younger’ guru, Nicky HambletonJones; controlling
emotional hunger with Weight Management Counsellor, Sanjaya Rakha; nutritious seafood recipes by Nigel Brady of Brady’s Fish & Seafood Market and making the most of your golf membership all year round with Golf Pro Dominic Fitzpatrick. One man who makes the most of his time on the greens is local sporting legend Gary Lineker, who talks to Richard Aldhous about his famous golfing buddies, football career and future on MOTD. Finally congratulations to Liz Kemp and Susan Hollins, the winners of our September competitions. For a chance to win a Dashing Diva manicure or pedicure at Heather White’s Professional Makeup Studio, Grange Farm, turn to page 15 for further details. Good luck! Until next time

“I love all those bright colours in the shops but not sure which ones to go for?” It all depends on your colouring. Not the colour of your skin but the hue. If you have a yellow hue to your skin e.g. olive skin, then you should opt for the bluey colours including emerald and jade to counter balance it. If you have pale skin then warmer colours (lime, olive green) are best for you. If you are still unsure, then wear bright colours away from your face, such as a skirt or accessories.

“I am in my fifties can I show my cleavage or is that now mutton dressed as lamb?” The answer to that is “How good is your skin?” If it is wrinkle free (including your neck) then yes but generally as we get older we should cover up more, as our skin loses its elasticity and becomes lined. So higher necklines and longer sleeves look better and keep us looking that bit younger.

Their brand portfolio comprises of an exciting range of quality classics such as The Bridge, British favourite Lulu Guinness and emerging brands like Angel Jackson and local Leicester brand Zatchels, with whom they collaborated to produce a limited edition satchel collection. The shop itself is stylish yet simple, a deliberate decision by its style conscious owners. “It was always our aim to open a store where we could give each brand a good representation of its collection,” says Maz. “La Maison de Sacs is all about merchandising product with plenty of space and lighting, ensuring each and every piece looks a million dollars.” In conjunction with the aesthetics of the store,
Maz believes that excellent product knowledge is essential to showcasing the in-store ranges and building valuable relationships with customers. He explains, “As well as being friendly and helpful, we have to be in a position to talk about products with anyone who walks through the door.” One might be forgiven for assuming that customers of La Maison de Sacs are all women, but with its ever evolving consumer demographic, the store now offers children’s products with Vivienne Westwood & Mini Melissa shoes, as well as popular Swedish outdoor brand Fjallraven. They also stock a fabulous selection of men’s bags from brands such as Ally Capellino, Bill Amberg to the exclusive Eastpak Designer Collaborations. Maz says, “It’s important to us that we offer something for everyone who has an appreciation for good quality, good design and good craftsmanship.” Whilst the men’s and children’s sectors weren’t the key focus of La Maison de Sacs’ early retail strategy, growth and development of the business, is at the forefront of their minds.

20’s
30’s
n When in our 20’s, it’s time to protect skin as much as possible. Never leave the house without wearing a moisturiser that is at least SPF25. n Smoking is incredibly ageing on the skin. I know it’s a hard habit to crack, but the earlier you give up, the better your skin will look in the future. n Take time to cleanse, tone and moisturise every day. If you find yourself too tired to remove makeup after a big night out, remember that your skin ages eight days for every night that you don’t! It might feel like a hassle in the early hours, but just giving your skin a good cleanse before you go to bed will make a huge difference on the fine lines and wrinkles that will appear in your 30’s and 40’s.
n They say 35 is when ageing really starts to show on your face. If you’ve been good to your skin, there shouldn’t be a sudden difference, but if you have partied hard and spent too much time in the sun, you might suddenly wake up and wonder where all the fine lines and wrinkles suddenly came from! n We begin to see a loss of elasticity in the skin in our 30’s, particularly in the under-eye area where you can spot the first visible signs of ageing. If you haven’t already, you should invest in a good eye cream, it’s important to keep this delicate area really hydrated.

exfoliate! Cell renewal starts to decline in your 30’s. The best way to boost collagen and elastin production, and slow down the destruction of your cells is to exfoliate the skin twice a week. Whether you choose physical or chemical exfoliation, try to get into a routine. This will go a long way to ensuring your skin looks fantastic well into your 40’s.

firmNess is the Name of the game n In our 40’s collagen
production reduces, plus we lose a lot of volume in our face as a result of fat loss under the skin. This means the fine lines and wrinkles we had in our 30’s may deepen and we might see folds appearing on the skin around the ‘nose-to -lip’ lines and the jowls, and a general loss of vibrancy in the skin. Invest in products that will plump, boost collagen production and firm. n Serums are the name of the game, if you’re not using a serum yet, I definitely suggest you start now. Serums are usually oil based and will penetrate the skin far more deeply than any cream can, meaning you will get the nutrients your skin needs deep down into the dermis which can help stimulate collagen production.
50’s
hydratioN is Key n At this stage a number of things happen to our skin, estrogen levels drop dramatically which means skin renewal slows down. Oil production decreases and your skin starts to dry out, losing its youthful glow. Pigment cells tend to clump together, and that’s why we see dark age-spots appearing on the face which make lines and wrinkles more pronounced. In our 50’s it is vital to use a moisturiser with Vitamin C, a powerful anti-oxidant that can help kick-start cell

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER The way I clean my brushes is to use shampoo and conditioner. I prefer a tea tree based shampoo as this is antibacterial and smells good too. Set the tap to a moderately warm temperature and then holding the brush by the handle, place the bristles into the stream of water and saturate the bristles.

our game. Whether by taking some instruction to improve key areas of your game, or upgrading your equipment in readiness for next year; the off-season should be spent wisely. Yet many golfers seem to use this time of year to hibernate away from the golf course. We all appreciate that golf courses are not in peak condition at this time of year but do bear in mind that if you are a club member, subscriptions are paid over a twelve month period and as you are paying for the privilege I would certainly be looking to get maximum value for money. As for competitive golf, through the winter many clubs run a ‘winter

It’s over three decades since Lineker first pulled on a Leicester City shirt, and transforming a career in football to one behind the television cameras has come as effortlessly to the 50-year-old as most other things in life.
18
Good Sport GARY LINIKER INTERVIEW JOURNALIST: RICHARD ALDHOUS
Gary Lineker is one of a rare few who have been granted the title of ‘freeman of the City of Leicester’. This means that, should it take his fancy, he is legally able to graze a flock of sheep in the town square.
O
f course, he’s never accepted the invitation – partly for the reason that he’s just a nice all-round guy and wouldn’t want to disturb the daily lives of passing shoppers, but mostly because Mr. Lineker is one busy man. It’s over three decades since Lineker first pulled on a Leicester City shirt, and transforming a career in football to one behind the television cameras has come as effortlessly to the 50-year-old as most other things in life.
“I guess I’ve been very lucky,” he begins. “When my football career ended I fell into the media side, and the right opportunities came along at the right time.” In terms of Match of the Day, the BBC’s flagship football show, the opportunity has become a 12-year love affair with Premier League football,
and one which, despite rumours to the contrary, Lineker has no intention of walking away from. “I heard there were a couple of rumours floating around that I was going to leave the BBC as a result of the corporation’s relocation up to Salford Quays. To be honest, I’m not sure where these stories originate from, but suffice to say the notion of me leaving wasn’t something invented in my head!” Lineker’s life down south is now very settled – so much so that he doesn’t resent the prospect of a trip up the motorway each weekend to present the show on a Saturday night. The former Spurs and England striker has a £2.6million abode in the footballer-friendly surrounds of Esher, Surrey, and whilst murmurs of moving back to the capital filter through what he says, it’s clear there is something tying him to the green, leafy, lush countryside in which he currently resides. “Golf!” he laughs. “It’s more addictive than any drug, and while I hate it most of the time (because
I’m not the best player in the world, if I’m honest), it’s for those rare moments of joy that I keep coming back. To me, it’s a unique sport. If you go through the right channels, you can play on the same courses as some of the game’s greats... you might even find yourself behind them on the tee mat! I guess if I could have done something in some other sport, it would definitely have been golf.” Regardless, Lineker’s still a firm fixture around the country’s golf courses, naming Sunningdale in Berkshire as his favourite, and referencing casually his golfing ‘buddies’ Darren Clarke and Ernie Els.
“It was with Ernie that I first shot a sub-70 round at the course. He was delighted for me, even though he hid it quite well!”
the modest surroundings of Braunstone where Lineker gained his schooling in sport. But he remains as down-to-earth and amicable as his television persona suggests... at least, the one seen when on the Beeb, as opposed to the less-than-likeable version who fronts advertising campaigns for Walkers crisps!
“When I did the first ad I thought it would be a one-off. That was in 1994 and I’ve been filming them on and off ever since! It has never led to any other acting work, unfortunately, so I can only think I’m a bit typecast in the role these days,” he laughs. “But I get a free supply of potato snacks so I suppose I can live with the tag of being ‘the crisp man’!”
Of course, the country hotels and elegant 19th-hole parties are all a far cry from

Is Emotional Hunger Controlling You?
As a weight-loss and weight-management expert, with a specialist interest in obesity, I frequently counsel clients who need help freeing themselves from the eating patterns that have led to weight gain.
G
ood counselling is available in many forms and when used alongside a weightloss plan, can help you address the habits that lead to weight gain, and help you keep off excess pounds long term. Did you realise that the way you think, can affect your feelings and physical responses so much that you’ll believe what your body is telling you is real? Hunger pangs are often more likely to be linked to your emotions than a physical need for food. Changing your emotions is

tough, but challenging the thoughts that drive them is easier, and that’s where cognitive behavioural therapy or ‘CBT’ comes in.
CBT can help you work out which thoughts result in you looking in the fridge – boredom, stress, anger, unhappiness, frustration – and understanding this is likely to influence your weight loss success. CBT is a practical and effective way to feel better and think better. Another counselling technique which can help you to understand why you
have weight problems is transactional analysis, or ‘TA’, which explores how you have developed and how this affects the way you behave – allowing you to understand the roots of your behaviour and where necessary, change it. Both techniques will help you examine behaviour that you have always taken for granted; behaviour that in the past may have prevented you from being the person you want to be – and can be.
Below are my Top 5 Tips on how to control emotional overeating:
1
Think about whether you are truly hungry. Stop and ask yourself ‘What am I really hungry for?’, ‘How could I satisfy this feeling without food?’
2
Consider your motivation for eating. Are you eating to fill in time or because you are bored or tired? Ask yourself ‘How could I find something satisfying to do?’, ‘What do I really enjoy doing?’
3
Go for a walk or take some exercise. As well as exercise being known to reduce hunger levels by affecting hunger hormones, it also provides a constructive means of spending time alone.
4
Keep a food and mood diary. Keeping note of what you eat each day and the mood you are in when you eat may help you to identify some trends.
5
Be specific when you shop. Plan your meals carefully. If you don’t buy biscuits, they won’t be in the cupboard for when you ‘think’ you are hungry!
Don’t let dieting be heavy going
LIGHTEN UP LighterLife is a different way to lose weight and keep it off. There’s a Counsellor and small support groups to help you change the way you think about food forever, and set meals with soups, shakes and bars to keep you on track.

WINING & DINING
Being Adventurous with Sustainable Seafood
The price of fish and seafood has increased significantly over the last decade or so and this is largely due to overfishing.
T
he high consumption of this precious commodity has resulted in a surge in prices, but at more than a cost to the consumer. Our insatiable appetite for fish and seafood has had a profound impact on global fisheries, to the extent that many species are endangered.
Sustainability is a topic that has received much public attention, driven largely by Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s ‘Fish Fight’ against discards. Nigel Brady Brady’s Fish & Seafood Market Stoneygate
22
Ensuring a healthy fish population in our seas to breed and repopulate is the essence of sustainability. Cod, haddock, salmon, prawns and tuna are the top five sellers in the UK and a substantial burden has been placed on these stocks, resulting in the need for aquaculture. Using alternatives such as coley, whiting, hake, mackerel, grey mullet and dabs helps to alleviate this burden. These alternatives are sustainable and in a lot of cases, offer a more affordable option. It is in everybody’s interest to source ethically, from fishermen right down the chain of custody and
ultimately to the consumer. Being an island nation, we are spoilt for choice of fish and seafood in the UK. So go on, try something different! Zoe and Nigel Brady are seafood enthusiasts and are the owners of Brady’s Fish & Seafood Market on Allandale Road, Leicester, LE2 2DA. Please contact us on info@bradysseafoodmarket.com for further tips and information.
Here are two really quick and simple recipes for you to try using sustainable fish.
Recipes: Grilled Whiting with Caper Butter n Blend 2 tbsp of capers,
lemon zest of 1 lemon and some butter in a food processor until smooth. n Brush 2 whiting fillets with this butter mix and grill for 4-5 mins. n Season and serve with a green salad.
Fried Hake in Oregano and Chilli Breadcrumbs n Add a freshly ground
bird’s-eye chilli, 1 tbsp of dried oregano and some salt and pepper to 100g of breadcrumbs. n Take 2 hake steaks (on the bone), dip into two beaten eggs mix, then into flour and then into the breadcrumb mix. n Shallow fry for about 9 or 10 mins (4 or 5 mins each side) and serve with crushed potatoes and alioli.

The New Bentley Continental GTC Revealed Bentley Leicester celebrated the launch of the new Bentley Continental GTC at a special ‘Evening of Champagne and Art’ on Thursday 6th October at its showroom at Watermead Business Park, in Syston. The new Bentley Continental GTC was unveiled with a ‘Field of Light’ display designed by world renowned light sculptor Bruce Munro, to highlight its new lines and shape. The new model has been sharpened,
refined and rethought in every detail and the result is a convertible sports car that offers supercar levels of performance together with the luxurious accommodation for up to four people. “Bentley has been making iconic open top tourers for over 90 years and the new Continental GTC is a real showcase of Bentley design for the Continental range, taking open top driving to a new level,” commented Sally Brooks, Marketing Manager at Bentley Leicester.
The Bentley Continental GTC features a W12 engine producing 567bhp, with maximum torque of 700Nm available from just 1700rpm for effortless power at the flex of the driver’s right foot. It accelerates from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 195mph. Recognised as a UNeSCO World Heritage Site in 1990, Red Square is a symbol of Russia’s turbulent and intriguing past and is the heart and soul of Russia. A great place to start your tour of the city, the buildings surrounding the Square are all of historical significance. the KremliN
Built as a fortress, the Moscow Kremlin is the best known of Russian citadels and includes 4 palaces, 4 cathedrals and the enclosing wall and towers. The red walls are a total of 2,205m long, between 3.5m and 6.5m thick, and range from 5m to 19m in height. Lining the walls are no less than 20 separate defensive towers, each with its own name, distinctive features, and history. A mixture of lavish opulence and austere secrecy, the Kremlin remains as alluring and enigmatic as ever. Two thirds of the citadel territory are closed to visitors, but the remaining third contains enough
treasures to occupy several days of sightseeing.
the pushKiN fiNe arts museum
Opened in 1912, the Pushkin Museum is the largest museum of european art in Moscow. It is similar to the British Museum in London in that its rooms offer a cross-section of world civilisations; however, it also hosts famous paintings from every major Western era of art including works by Monet, Cezanne and Picasso. Go early to avoid the crowds.

Local organisations benefit from local Society Loughborough Building Society and its Community Awards programme have given over £60,000 since the programme launched 6 years ago, supporting many different types of community projects within the East Midlands. This year alone, the Society has supported 24 projects including local sports teams, volunteer groups, play groups, local rescue and response organisations and many more. The programme is aimed at community groups that want to carry out a project that will benefit the community or improve the service they currently provide their community. Gary Brebner, Chief Executive Officer of Loughborough Building Society says “As a local, mutual building society, we are aware that we are spending our member’s money. Putting their money back into their communities shows our commitment to providing community support in our operating areas.” The Loughborough has recently awarded £500 to Leicestershire 4x4 Fire and Rescue Response for them to purchase protective equipment and gazebo for event days. Simon Dale, Chairman of the organisation said, “The money has helped us on rescues and at outdoor events and we are looking at expanding into nearby counties such as Warwickshire and Northamptonshire”. Commenting on the success of the event High Sheriff Resham Singh Sandhu MBe DL said “I was especially happy to see that Warning Zone was brought to the attention of a cross-section of people from all walks of life. The hospitality of our hosts – the Plug team – was beyond compare and everybody had a marvellous time. Thank you to everyone who supported the evening!” for more information about warning zone please visit www.warningzone.org.uk

intage decorating is fun to do and with this approach, you have the exceptional opportunity to explore thrift stores and markets to find pieces that raise the vintage feel. Vintage decoration amalgamates perfectly with numerous decorating schemes, including French country, Tuscan, Farmhouse, bohemian modern, vintage modern and shabby chic. Vintage can also be carefully mixed with more contemporary pieces to create a unique look and feel, that’s personal to your home.

create the right mood. A wrought iron chandelier provides great style to a room or candles in the hallway or above the fireplace will impart dramatic lighting effects to the room. Make use of vintage storage containers. These boxes can be used to hold prized possessions and books as well as being decorative items in their own right. When mixing furniture periods, create some surprises. Use retro fabrics on contemporary pieces and very modern fabrics on vintage furniture and antiques. Paint items of furniture to go with your room. Try giving the pieces a distressed look, by rubbing wax over corners and edges before you start. Then apply the paint (in thin coats), and when dry, rub with a little sandpaper or wire wool, over the waxed areas, so that a little of the wood shows through. Invest in mismatched old frames and add new photographs of family and friends. Create a feature wall by hanging them all together – or
mix them with new frames and pictures on the same wall. n Get the balance right. Add some vintage cushions to a new sofa or vice versa. This is perfect for adding a colourful splash of nostalgia. n Vintage and contemporary style works really well on the dining table. Mix new plates with teacups for serving desserts and spruce up a new crisp tablecloth with quirky vintage napkins.

ut this is the space where often we have the most fun and create the fondest memories. Whether it’s playing sport with the family, entertaining friends or simply lying on during a hot summer’s day, it’s the part of the garden that we underrate and frequently take for granted. Yet despite abusing and neglecting our lawns, we all want one which is green and perfectly manicured. The problem is that’s rarely what we end up getting. When I talk about neglecting our lawns, I do not mean to sound condescending. No doubt

it probably gets a regular mow and edge, but lawns need a little more work than that to keep them looking lush and green. The good news is that autumn is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC.
firstly start by addressing areas of tHe lawn tHat don’t grow well. one common caUse is oVerHanging trees wHicH take ligHt and moistUre from tHe tUrf directly UnderneatH tHem. If you have this problem, either carefully prune the tree in question to increase light levels or alternatively remove the turf and replace with some ground cover plants. This will make the world of
difference to the look of your garden as instead of the customary brown patch you will have a lovely new green area of ground cover. Once you have dealt with the areas of lawn that don’t grow well, give the remainder some ‘aeration’. There are different methods of aeration but the simplest is to take a fork and drive it into the turf at equal distances. Years of walking on the turf compacts the ground and will result in the turf roots struggling for air and also water, as compacted lawns can water log quite badly. Aeration will help both these problems.
tHe next steP is to ‘feed’ tHe lawn. lawns are best seeded in tHe aUtUmn or sPring as tHis is wHen tHe seed germinates best. Choose an autumn feed over a spring feed, as it will help bed the lawn in for winter. Also look at ‘scarifying’ to remove any moss and then top dress with a little top soil and seed if necessary.
tip: lawn seed is a cheap and effective way of addressing bare patches or extending the lawn area.

ven local areas that are bucking the trend seem to get lost in the downbeat reporting of the property market. So where is the good news? The residential lettings market is stronger than it has ever been. Demand continues to soar for rental properties across the county and at all levels of the market. To a greater extent, it is the poor supply of properties for sale, relatively limited availability of mortgage finance for key groups of prospective purchasers and a perception amongst many that ‘now might not be a good time to buy’, that has driven would be purchasers to

oPPortUnities for purChasers The flexibility offered by the rental sector is in fact a huge strength. It is allowing purchasers to make the best of a slower moving sales market at present, meaning they can be far more responsive, moving from a tenancy as opposed to getting caught in a lengthy and complicated chain.

Now is a good time to be a Landlord; rents are at an all time high and so is tenant demand. Government assistance is

o what is ‘good’ record keeping according to HMRC? They have been quoted as saying: “An accurate record of business money in and business money out in whatever form…will be all that is needed to fulfil the record keeping obligations that the law requires. Good record keeping is essentially about diligence, not technical ability.” As an ex-tax inspector, I always tell clients that it does not matter where and how they record their

business transactions as long as it is complete and accurate. With the raft of business and financial software now available, in principle it should be easier but the old adage ‘garbage in, garbage out’ often comes to mind. But why the increased interest in maintaining business records? In a consultation document last December HMRC stated that about 40% of the targeted sector keeps ‘inadequate’ records.

In the first half of this year 1500 small firms have already been visited. So far there has been little or no comment in the professional press but one article suggested that in one case the HMRC officer reviewed the mileage claims by the directors. They had in support of their claims kept fuel receipts and details of the journeys undertaken. That included the date and distance of each journey and the name of the client visited. They were told this was not enough! The officer’s suggestion was that they should buy something from a local shop so the receipt would prove the destination. That was clearly over the top, as there is nothing in the statute that states what diaries or records are required to be kept. I am sure the officer’s conduct would not be appreciated by HMRC Head Office and needless to say the

My advice is to check with your accountant or an experienced tax consultant to find out what deficiencies there are with your existing records and how you should correct them before HMRC knocks on your door.
