So it’s a privilege to meet the ‘Princess of Punk’ in her bright, quirky and altogether fabulous London penthouse. Wear it Well It’s all too easy to go overboard with the party makeup, so we asked professional makeup artist Sheelagh Powell to share the biggest faux pas and how to avoid them

Metallic Eye Shadow

LOOK GET THE Stila Foil Finish Eyeshadow, £33.50

You’ve gotta love a little shimmer on the eyes, especially for a party or night out! The main issue is choosing the correct formula for your skin and age. As a rule cream eye shadows will be easy to apply but may need a little maintenance through the evening due to the creamy texture as it may crease over time. Powder formulas are much longer lasting but will require a little blending with a brush. The more mature lady should avoid anything with too much glitter/shimmer to avoid drawing attention to fine lines or wrinkles.

Liquid Eyeliner Severe liner on the lower lid is a big No No. Instead of defining and opening the eyes it can in fact make the eyes look smaller, bottom heavy and drag the eyes down. If you have small eyes try to line the outer third of your eyes, top and bottom and avoid lining all the way around. If your eyes are bigger you can afford to use liner top and bottom all the way across, fading it in towards the inner corner. Liquid eye liner is great for a night out or to create a stronger look. It’s always worth practicing first by tracing over pencil eye liner.

Try to choose a foundation that will even out skin tone without looking like a mask. CHRISTMAS After months of struggling to fit into your LBD, Rebecca Watts of Nutrafit answers your questions on how to survive the party season without gaining the weight you’ve worked hard to get off I’ve quite a hectic social calendar over Christmas, how can I minimise the damage?

How do I avoid all the temptations of the buffet at my Christmas party? Always eat a healthy snack before going to parties where buffet food will be served. This will help prevent you overloading on high calorie food. Things to avoid include fried foods, sausage rolls, crisps, and high calorie dips. Replace these if you can with carved meat, breadsticks, crudités, pretzels, salsa and tzatziki. Also have a one plate rule, put everything on your plate you want to eat and no going back for seconds, thirds…

It’s a really difficult time for anyone trying to be healthy. One day off is not the end of the world but when we have night after night of parties we can’t just hope for the best. Apart from making careful food choices, another great way to minimise the effects is to set yourself a rule that you have to earn your nights out. Set yourself a challenging physical activity to be undertaken on the day and/or the day after your party. It can be a long walk at a medium-fast pace, or a gym or home workout. This helps to counteract the extra calories and it also helps you feel like you’ve earned your night out!

Alcohol is my downfall during the festive season, what can I do? Try to restrict the number of nights over this season that you drink, maybe offer to drive for a couple of nights. White spirit drinks are generally lower in calories if mixed with a low-cal mixer, varying from 60-100 calories per drink. Also consider alternating alcoholic drinks with sparkling water, this will not only keep your calories lower but will minimise the hangover the next day when we often turn to comfort foods.

What are the healthier options for a sit down festive menu? Always opt for the Christmas roast option as it can actually be quite healthy. Fill your plate with turkey, – a lean, low in fat and calories meat - vegetables and only a couple of potatoes.

Then either have a starter OR a dessert to keep calorie consumption lower. You could always go for 50% starter and 50% dessert if you are capable of leaving food on your plate. URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2014 25

MARY Ahead of the much anticipated Downton Christmas special, Michelle Dockery our favourite aristo, talks to us about being Lady Mary Crawley Lady Mary Crawley is possibly the sassiest aristocrat ever to grace British TV screens. Perfectly depicted by rising star Michelle Dockery, one of the key figures of Downton Abbey has enjoyed a return to top form in the current series, after suffering the premature loss of the love of her life. The confident, classy Mary is now back to her sarcastic best, which is something Dockery has enjoyed portraying. “She’s embracing life, and not death,” explains the actress. “I’m really glad that Mary is now in this new chapter in her life, embracing her independence – and her single life! I’ve had a lot of fun this year. As much as the last season was enjoyable, because it was such a challenge to show her going through that grief, this year it’s very, very different because she’s happier.” Downton fans adore Dockery’s character for her putdowns, often directed at her hapless sister Lady Edith, and sometimes even thrown back at one of her (many) suitors when they get too possessive over the fiercely independent Lady Mary. “I’ve always loved playing that side of her,” Dockery smiles. “In this series, there’s a part of me that feels like the old Mary has returned. Her wit and her really quite cutting remarks are coming back and that represents that she’s confident, she’s got her mojo back.” The actress believes that some of her character’s renewed vigour comes from focusing on her son and the ever-stressful demands of running the Downton estate with her father, Lord Grantham. Recent episodes have emphasised the huge time of transition that the British aristocracy went through between the two World Wars. The cast have historical advisor, Alistair Bruce, on set to guide them through the social and economic intricacies of the era, and each character is embracing the changes - to distinctly varying degrees. Dockery sees Lady Mary as one of those who is moving with the times.

“Mary is growing with confidence in the management of the estate, and she’s realising it’s her responsibility; not just for the good of everyone but mainly for her son, George, so there’s less friction between her and Robert [Lord Grantham] because he can see that she’s capable of dealing with it. George actually gives her a lot of strength, because so many of her decisions are now based on his needs; whether it’s a romantic or business dilemma,” Dockery explains. Avid viewers will be aware that Lady Mary has been causing quite the stir recently; both with her courtships (she spent a week in a hotel with one of her admirers – scandalous!) and her personal style. The character recently debuted a shocking ‘flapper girl’ bob hairstyle, much to the disgust of her grandmother, the Dowager Countess – who said that she thought Mary was a man in women’s clothing – and Dockery is just excited to be wearing some of the best costumes on the show, once again.

“She’s out of the mourning clothes, thankfully, so she’s not in black anymore!” Dockery laughs. “The designer decided that Mary would be very much on trend now, so it’s been amazing to see all the new designs coming in. There’s a very Chanellike quality to a lot of her clothes, so for me it’s been great because I’ve got to wear a slightly more interesting wardrobe in comparison to last year - and some of the pieces are quite risqué! There are different shapes of the dresses, with lower backs and the ankles are on show.”

Dockery is already carving out a reputation as quite the fashion icon herself, consistently wowing on the red carpet in elegant, yet daring designs. However, the actress can confirm that while her love of fashion has been inspired by her work on the show – “I’ve learnt a lot about what colours and styles suit me, just from the costume designers” – she definitely leaves Lady Mary’s wardrobe on set when she goes home. “I don’t sit in my Downton Abbey dresses watching Madmen,” she giggles. She’s just like the rest of us, tuning in every Sunday to watch the show,

chilling out in her comfy clothes. “I actually have a tiger onesie that I was bought for Christmas one year, so occasionally I’ll get that on,” she whispers. We’d hazard a guess that Dockery might be wearing her onesie when she, along with the rest of the nation, tune into this year’s Downton Christmas special. Whilst Dockery herself is not giving anything away, rumour has it that the location chosen for filming – Northumberland’s Alnwick Castle – should give us a hint of its grand scale. Perhaps the main difficulty that some may have with Get on Up is that it has to walk a fine line between being a glowing portrait of a musical visionary, and a warts-and-all biopic that shows the darker sides of James Brown’s nature. In the most part it succeeds, no-one will leave the cinema underestimating the work and sweat that goes into being the best with the faith, determination and egotism that

you need to get to the top all on display; but it also demonstrates that a good man can be corrupted by never ending praise, money and fame. Boseman is superb, often breaking the fourth wall to talk to camera; it is his natural charm that keeps us on James’ side even as he sacrifices friends and family for his career. A hugely entertaining film, in the end Get on Up is all about the music.

I want to serve a cheese board. Could you suggest some local cheeses that will impress our out-of -town guests?

To narrow down the choices on your cheeseboard it is best to select between three and five cheeses of differing textures and tastes. These could include: Lincolnshire Poacher, it’s unpasteurised, packed full of flavour and made by some very passionate cheese makers. Sparkenhoe Red Leicester is the only real Red Leicester. Made with milk from their own cows, it’s nutty, sweet with a citrus finish. Colston Basset Stilton. Established in 1913, it’s local to Leicester, smooth and creamy with a mellow flavour.

Can you please recommend a light but delicious dessert that I can serve after the main event?

Ditch the Christmas pudding in favour of a Mulled Wine Panna Cotta with Poached Pear.

Ingredients:

Method:

½ bottle red wine ½ orange sliced 3 cloves ¼ cinnamon stick 40g Demerara sugar 6 pears 500ml double cream 500ml milk 150g sugar 6 gelatine leaves

Put wine, sliced orange, clove, nutmeg, Demerara sugar, cinnamon into a pan and reduce. Peal pears and cook in your wine reduction until tender. Remove from the pan and carry on reduction wine until you have syrup. Now soak gelatine in cold water, and then add cream, milk and sugar. Bring back to the boil, then pass through a sieve and dissolve gelatine into mix. Now divide between 6 wine glasses and allow to set in the fridge. Then quarter your pears and remove seed, once panna cotta has set, divide pears up between glass and garnish with some toasted almonds.

Help! How do I make bread sauce? I’ve never done it before but my Mother-in-law says it’s a must! - Daniella, Kibworth Traditional bread sauce is one of the great, classic British sauces. It’s beautifully creamy and the perfect accompaniment for your Christmas turkey.

600ml milk 50g butter 1 onion chopped 6 cloves 6 peppercorns 2 cloves garlic 1 bay leaf 100g bread crumbs 4 tbsp single cream

Simmer milk, butter, cloves, peppercoms, garlic and bay leafs in a pan for 20 mins. Strain and return to the pan, then add bread crumbs and simmer for 3-4 mins, stir in cream, then add nutmeg and season.

Is it best to put the stuffing inside the turkey or cook it separately? I’m confused! - Angela, Loughborough

I prefer to cook separately because sometimes I find the stuffing dries out, as it will cook a lot quicker than the turkey. It also gives you the opportunity to prepare it ahead of time and store in your refrigerator. To reheat, simply bake it on a lower rack, underneath the turkey.

A PERFECT MATCH When you’ve gone to so much trouble with Christmas Lunch, it makes sense to get the wine right too. Hayley Anderton, wine specialist at Waitrose, Oadby shares her festive favourites Most of us will probably be sitting down to turkey this Christmas and all the wines I’m suggesting here will work beautifully, but for something traditional, opt for a Chardonnay. A great all-rounder is the Joseph Drouhin Rully Premier Cru. Keep the gravy light and this will help cut through the richness of the meal as well as being a welcome choice for those who prefer whites.

Buy a case or two of something like the Ridgeview Merret Bloomsbury sparkler from Sussex and you’ll have a lovely crisp biscuity fizz, that will keep the cook happy on Christmas Day, make an excellent last minute gift, ensure a warm welcome if you’re out and about, and will also see you through New Year’s Eve in style.

If you’re having beef I’d recommend a good Claret. Both 2009 and 2010 were brilliant vintages in Bordeaux so look out for those. The Chateau le Vieux Fort Medoc Cru Bourgeois should be a crowd pleaser; full flavoured and stylish, it’s very easy to drink.

You get roughly 6 glasses to a bottle and it’s definitely better to be left with a few bottles to keep for a treat later on than it is to run out when you need it most!

If it’s lamb on the menu, I’d go for a decent Rioja. Try and find something with a bit of age like the La Rioja Alta Vina Arana 2005/06. Mellow and soft with plenty of fruit character, this is a real treat and right in its prime. Cheaper Rioja can be fairly ordinary, so it really is worth pushing the budget up a little here. ALMOND AND LEMON BRUSSEL SPROUTS

Elevate your sprouts to another level

Add a little sweet and sour to this festive favourite

The perfect crunchy, fluffy spud

Ingredients:

800g brussel sprouts 2 tbsp olive oil 20g butter 2 cloves of garlic, sliced 2 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp finely grated lemon rind 40g flaked almonds, toasted

1 red cabbage, finely sliced 25g butter 1 Bramley apple, peeled and grated 3 cloves 100ml cider vinegar 25g light muscovado sugar Handful walnuts, toasted Tsp fresh thyme, chopped

750g maris piper potatoes 30ml olive oil ¾ tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper 3 cloves of garlic 2 tbsp fresh rosemary

Serves 6-8

Method: Slice the bottoms off each of the Brussel sprouts, cutting a cross into the base. Place the sprouts into a large saucepan of salted boiling water. Cook the sprouts for 5 mins, or until they are tender but still retain a bit of bite. Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat, add the garlic and cook for 2-3 mins or until a light golden colour. Add the parboiled sprouts and cook for a further 2 mins. To serve, add the lemon juice, rind and almonds and toss to coat the sprouts.

Serves 6-8

Method: Place the cabbage, butter, apple and cloves into a wide shallow pan on a lowmedium heat. Cook until the cabbage starts to wilt. Add the cider vinegar, then stir until the vinegar has almost all disappeared. Add the muscovado sugar and stir until it has completely dissolved. To serve, sprinkle the toasted walnuts and thyme over the cabbage. This dish can be prepared ahead of time and frozen. Allow to thaw completely before gently reheating in a pan.

Serves 3-4

Method: Preheat the oven to 180-200°C. Cover potatoes with cold water and season well. Bring to the boil and cook for approx. 5 mins. Drain and leave to steam dry for a few mins. Give the pan a bit of a shake to roughen up the potatoes. Now coat the potatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and rosemary. Then tip potatoes onto a baking tray and spread out evenly. Roast in the oven, turning occasionally, for approx. 60 mins, or until browned and crisp and even! URBAN FOX DECEMBER 2014 43

With presents to wrap, family to organise and cards to write, the last thing you want to worry about at Christmas is your home, says Mark Sandall, Managing Partner at property specialists Andrew Granger & Co. Follow these tips and all you’ll have left to worry about is whether you’ve bought a big enough turkey! Stay secure

Check all of your door and window locks, and your burglar alarm batteries too. Thieves know that Christmas is a time where lots of people are out visiting friends and family – so it pays to make sure your house is burglar-proof. Keep presents out of sight and consider investing in timers on your lights, so passers-by think you’re at home.

Keep out the cold

Brrr – when a blizzard is blowing outside you’ll want to make sure your home is toasty. Bleed your radiators – it doesn’t take long and can make a big difference in ensuring they’re working efficiently. All you have to do is open the valve until the water appears, then close the valve.

Look up

Preparing an emergency kit in case of a power cut can save a lot of hassle later on. Remember essentials such as a radiator key, a torch, spare batteries and fuses, a screwdriver and a fire extinguisher. It is also useful to have the details of a reliable plumber and electrician as well as your home insurance policy details.

If you have a sloping roof, make sure you give it a good look to see if you have any cracks or holes where water could seep in. Clear out your drainpipe and gutters, as debris can become trapped in these areas. This could eventually lead to saturated walls and damp patches caused by the blockages and weakening joints. It’s definitely worthwhile to fix any roof related problems before Father Christmas visits!

Check that both your building and contents home insurance are up to date. If you are unlucky enough to suffer any mishaps over the festive period, you want to ensure that you are financially protected, especially as Christmas can be incredibly expensive anyway.

Watch out!

If you’re playing host this year, you’ll be preparing for a stream of guests coming in and out of your home. It’s essential to make sure your threshold is tidy, so remove any leaves and debris that might get in the way. Ice isn’t the only thing you could slip on – a pile of soggy leaves on a damp surface could lead to disastrous consequences!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at Hollingsworths Don’t wade through treacle, make this Treacle Tart

Ingredients • 1 x 500g block of shortcrust pastry (or make your own) • 100g of fresh white breadcrumbs • 375g of golden syrup • A lemon

1) Gently heat your golden syrup in a pan on the hob – once warm, stir in the breadcrumbs and set aside to cool. 2) Grease a 23cm tart tin with a small amount of butter. 3) Roll out your pastry and line the tart tin with the pastry. Return to the fridge for 15 minutes to cool. 4) Add half the juice and rind from your lemon in the syrup and breadcrumbs mixture and then place into the pastry case. For a Christmas look, make some holly leaves out of pastry trimmings to place on top or create a lattice to go over the top. 5) Bake for 25-30 minutes in a pre-heated oven (200 C/Gas 6) until the pastry is golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes and serve with custard or cream (or both!)

Dreading the Christmas hols? You’re not alone! It’s perfectly natural for families to feel some degree of stress or anxiety. So we at Urban Fox have put our heads together and come up with 6 great ways to help you get through the festivities unscathed

Christmas is meant to be the ‘most wonderful time of the year’, so it’s hard not to fall into the trap of setting huge expectations; but this can leave you feeling disappointed, tense and underwhelmed. Try to keep your expectations - whether gifts, children’s behaviour or family members - realistic and achievable. It’s unlikely your 3 year old will get through Christmas lunch without some disruption.

Don’t be a martyr. It’s quite easy for women to take everything upon themselves and then feel irritated that no one is helping. Instead get everyone in the family involved in the preparations both before and on Christmas Day itself – writing Christmas card, wrapping presents, putting up the decorations. You really don’t have to do it all.

Be realistic about relationships. If things have been strained recently, don’t expect Christmas Day or a New Year’s party to fix everything. But before you rush to the divorce lawyers try to find some time to spend together alone, away from the Christmas shopping, wrapping and cooking. A little time-out can add new perspective to your relationship.

Get together as a family and write a list of what everyone wants to do. With older children, discuss creating a happy balance between family time and time with friends. Also make a list of who needs to see who over the holiday period. This is particularly important if you are part of a blended family. Scheduling visits ahead of time is the key to a Happy Christmas

If you are going to stay with relatives or friends over Christmas, discuss beforehand who will do and pay for what to avoid any tensions on the day. Every family has their own Christmas traditions from when to open presents, to the time to eat. Work out a compromise to suit all but failing that if you’re in their home, play by their rules. It won’t kill you for one year.

Finally doing good things for other people makes us feel happier. Invite someone who is on their own this Christmas to spend the day with your family; or consider helping out serving meals to the homeless or elderly in your community. nd you won’t be alone, as according to travel industry body, ABTA, 3.5 million people will be heading abroad over the Christmas and New Year to take a winter sunshine break or ski holiday. If budget is a factor, don’t be unduly concerned; as if you travel directly before the Christmas holidays, air fares can sometimes be lower than at any other time of the year. I’ll be preparing for the festivities with a sunshine holiday, the chance to recharge my batteries before the celebrations begin. We’ll only get back a few days before Christmas, so it’ll be a mad panic to get everything organised for the big day. Must remember to get my letter to Santa written before I go. I love the run up to Christmas - store decorations, gift shopping and I wait with eager anticipation for the high street ad campaigns. I think this year’s batch have been a little muted, it doesn’t feel like Christmas without “Here Come the Girls”! But the shining star for me is the M&S offering. Love the idea of fairies clocking on and who doesn’t need a little “Magic and Sparkle” in their life?! My Christmas home style has changed over the years, but generally I’m a less is more kinda girl. Last year I went a bit crazy in John Lewis, scooping up all their wooden, felt and woollen – essentially non-breakable – decorations in bright primary colours to appeal to my ‘curious’ toddler. We also had great fun making paper chains. It took me back to my own childhood Christmases. We’ll be spending Christmas at home this year, just the 3 of us. I’m planning a laid-back morning in my PJs, playing with Grace and her new Doll’s House. I don’t know who’ll be more excited me or her! Steve’s already told me not to get upset when she starts rearranging the furniture. Seriously, why would she do that? Lol! My Christmas wish list will include some guaranteed me time with a relaxing aromatic facial at my local Decléor salon The Retreat and I’m nearly out of my Clarins Instant Smooth (miracle polyfilla for the face) so that will definitely make

the list. Steve’s also pretty good at choosing handbags…hint hint!

Best Christmas Hit Fairytale of New York On the food front I’m planning quick and easy breakfast canapés to take us through the morning and then the main event will be late afternoon. Christmas lunch with a 3 year old is not exactly leisurely, so less time in the kitchen and more time with Grace, is my strategy for this year. Boxing Day is an extended family affair so watch out Waitrose, I’m heading your way.

Once Grace is tucked up in bed on Christmas night, Steve and I will no doubt spend our evening experimenting with cocktail recipes – could get messy – and creating the ultimate Christmas playlist with Spotify. And of course I’ll need to block out an hour or two for the Downton Abbey Christmas Special. I still think Michael Gregson might turn up. How many lone parents can you have in one house?! What’s in store for 2015? Grace starts at Stoneygate PreSchool from January so another milestone to look forward to. Family will be a big part of 2015. My Mum was diagnosed with Parkinsons this year and my Dad suffered an unexpected stroke. It just makes you realise how important time is. And time will fly at work: we’ve exciting plans to bring you even more of the things you love, so don’t miss your monthly Fox fix in 2015.
