approach to Famed for her wonderfully colourful Rhodes design, English queen of textiles Zandra discusses her involvement in the industry
her garments procured by buyers Henri Bendel, Neiman Marcus and Saks, Zandra has since become the enigmatic textile designer of her age.
At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. Unperturbed, the designer made dresses from her own fabrics, embedding printed textiles within her craft.
“One of my first struggles was the fact that I was a textile designer,” she explains if with a laugh. “People would say that you’re a textile designer then you can’t a make dresses. So I suppose that was revolution.”

Introduced to the colourful world of at textiles by her mother, Zandra studied Medway College of Art in Kent, before securing a place at London’s The Royal College of Art.
“I do think that being in London at the time that I started, when everyone was But looking toward the UK, was helpful. I don’t think that there’s such an equal that opportunity at present. I don’t think our current government spends enough on promoting fashion when compared to the French government, for example. So therefore, unfortunately, you don’t necessarily reap the benefits.”
Rhodes shows no signs of slowing down. this The fashionista passed up her seat at of year’s London Fashion Week in favour advocating a women’s health awareness campaign in San Diego. Known for dividing her time between bases in

FashiEoBnE R Some female celebs can blend into the background with ease, needing only a floppy hat and a pair of Dior shades to disappear. But for supermodel Cara Delevingne, whose distinctive eyebrows, sculpted cheekbones and lithe limbs have won her multiple ad campaigns, anonymity is harder to find. Cara Delevingne likes to have fun. Her Instagram account is filled with silly faces pulled with her A-list pals, and her noholds-barred personality is definitely part of the reason she attracts the paparazzi like moths to a flame. The current It girl has spoken of her desire to punch the photographers away - “I’d be so happy, I dream about it at night” - but she’s not new to having a camera in her face. The professional flashbulb is, after all, her bread and butter. Cara is currently one of the world’s hottest supermodels, the face of a multitude of elite brands including Tag Heuer, Mulberry, Burberry, DKNY, Topshop, H&M, and YSL. She turns heads on billboards, the catwalk and in person, too. It took the model 11 hours to get ready for this year’s Met Gala, with world-famous body artist Bang Bang adorning her body with intricate, hand-painted, Chinese-inspired temporary tattoos. Cara is a bonafide style chameleon: her coveted caramel locks one day in beach-ready waves, the next in cornrows, and the next poker straight. She’s racking up tattoos - both fake and very permanent - and when she isn’t working couture on the red carpet,
she frequently favours a grungy, androgynous look, often opting for sleek tailored suits when attending events. There are fan sites dedicated to Cara-inspired outfits and she’s credited for taking the slogan t-shirt look into the mainstream again, yet this same young woman has collaborated with fashion powerhouse Chanel to create the Cara, an edgy handbag retailing at £795. Success doesn’t necessarily come naturally to Cara – she’s admitted to crippling anxiety about her looks, not helped by the business she’s in. “When you model, there’s no way you can’t notice yourself. Because you’re constantly surrounded by people saying, ‘Oh, she’s too short, she’s too skinny, she’s this, she’s that.’ And you’re right there. They’re talking about you and you’re right there! It’s messed up, modelling makes you so self-conscious… In the beginning, I was thinking, ‘How do I set myself apart from the other girls?’ So many girls were taller, skinnier, and prettier. And I’m not a girly girl at all—I didn’t get boobs until I was around 18! As a teenager, I kept thinking, I’m so short, and I have no boobs—what do I do?”
She’s the perfect dichotomy of supermodel: left-of-centre but able to sit comfortably in the exclusive club of the rich and beautiful. The daughter of a former socialite, Cara recalls running naked in a supermarket as a child because she hated the clothes she was wearing, and her first ever job was sitting for a Bruce Weber shoot for Italian Vogue aged ten. To the rest of the world, it appears Cara has it all, but she actually insists her famous face has its downsides: she’s struggled to realise her dream of becoming a respected actress. “Modelling is where I started and I’m never going to turn my back on it. I thank it for everything I’ve done and without that I wouldn’t be here now, but it’s not what I love – acting is what I love. I knew I was going to have to fight really hard to (become an actress), because I had to prove myself. Most people have that stigma: ‘she’s a model, can’t act, we don’t want you in our movie’.” What’s more, “People say to me: ‘The money’s probably not enough, it’s not the amount of money you usually get paid.’ And I sit there going: ‘No, that’s not the point, I would pay to do this film because I care about it so much.’”
FASHION & BEAUTY
nEL “As a teenager, I kept thinking, I’m so short, and I have no boobs— what do I do?”
Granted, it’s a nice problem to have, but even before the big brands came knocking, Cara was desperate to enter the world of acting – even requesting an agent as her twelfth birthday gift from her parents. Cara enjoyed a small role as Princess Sorokina in 2012’s Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley, and has steadily built up her acting portfolio ever since, despite the model stigma. “I was always like, ‘F**k, I’m never going to able to act because I’m a model,” she says.
This year however, she’s scoring big. Cara stars in The Face of an Angel, and has delved into the period drama with Tulip Fever. But it’s YA book-turned-movie Paper Towns that people are really gushing about, where Cara’s distinctive look compliments her role as surly, enigmatic Margo Spiegelman. Acting may be Cara’s number one love (well, a runner up to her pet rabbit, Cecil) but while she protests her striking face can be a burden, she does appreciate the value of her world-famous eyebrows.
Thanks to the Cara-effect, brow definers are flying off the shelves and brow boosting serums have been introduced to combat the damage done by years of over-plucking. Before 2012, who would have put a MAC Brow Gel in their basket? “I’m quite surprised that nobody has asked me to do my own line of tweezers. I totally would love to do that… Or, like, mascara. Cara’s Mascara!” Watch this space… URBAN FOX JUNE 2015 17

BEACH
CHEATS Whether you’re heading to the Bahamas or Bournemouth this summer, we reveal 10 secrets to no fuss, hot holiday hair!
1
Consider a Keratin smoothing treatment before you go away. With the promise of frizz-free hair for up to 4 months, you can even leave the straighteners at home. Your hair will look great with the minimum amount of drying, curls will be more defined and 80% less frizzy than before.
2
If you are already very blonde, have minimum highlights before you go. Even taking extra care, your colour is likely to lift slightly and the last thing you want to do when you get back is pay for a full head of lowlights!
3
6
4
7
5
8
Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair and let the heat from the sun treat you to a hot conditioning treatment as you laze by the pool. Wash out before you hit the local night spots for hair with ultra-shine. Try Kèrastase Soleil Masque UV Défense Active for soft, radiant hair. Your scalp is part of your skin so if you wear a parting, apply sunblock to avoid sun burn. It’s also a good idea to change your parting during the holiday so you achieve sun lightened locks not just on the parting you wear most often. If your hair is short, try the slicked back look. It looks amazing on the beach and will help to avoid the tan lines on your forehead. Use a good conditioner or UV protection gel. Then simply add a splash of water to reactivate the gel and take the sleek look right through to sunrise!
Use products specifically designed for hair that is going to be exposed to the sun, sea and chlorine. This is especially important if you have tinted or highlighted hair as it can help to prevent colour fading and damage. We love the Aveda three-part defence and recovery system. Don’t be tempted to put lemon juice or instant sun sprays in your hair. Both will dry out your hair and you are unlikely to achieve the stunning sun-kissed shade you were hoping for. Sun sprays can leave your hair looking frizzy and orange and most good salons will not risk colouring over it. Wearing a hat is one of the best ways to protect your hair in the sun. Choose something which matches your beach look. Scarves, floppy hats and trilbies are all in vogue this summer. Bear in mind that the sun can shine through some fabrics, so wear a protective product underneath.
9
Swap your sea salt styling products, for the real thing. After swimming in the sea, braid your hair and leave to dry. For the evening, unbraid your hair, give it a quick shake and a spritz of spray and you will have perfect mermaid waves.
10
Created on texturised, dayold hair, the chignon is the perfect beach-to-bar style. It’s easy to do and you don’t have to worry about any stray hairs that fall out, as this simply adds to the soft, un-done, relaxed summer vibe.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Summer STEP INTO
Whatever you thought of that advertising campaign, there’s no need for drastic diets and hours at the gym to get your body bikini ready, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts; you just need to be a bit more active! It isn’t rocket science that people who move more burn extra calories than those who don’t. But how do you fit being more active into your already busy life? It’s simple: just take an extra 10,000 steps a day! Walking is something that the majority of us are able to do, and can easily be incorporated into your lifestyle. The NHS recommends 150 minutes of weekly exercise. If you do 10,000 steps a day you’ll probably clock-up more than that. And if you follow my stepping-up tips, you’ll probably hardly notice you’re doing it! Whether you are a seasoned walker or a beginner, always make sure you have comfortable walking shoes and, if you’re currently quite inactive, build up your steps to 10,000 over a few weeks.
Keeping Count You don’t physically have to count every step yourself, there are lots of products on the market to help you. All are essentially ‘pedometers’ (small devices that track swings of your body which correspond with each step you take) and range from free to £200+. One of my favourites is the ‘Fitbit’ phone app. It’s free and you can also track other activities and nutrition, as well as set challenges for yourself or between groups of friends.

Stepping Up Due to the prevalence of car journeys and sedentary jobs, the average person only walks 3,000- 4,000 steps a day. A few small changes can soon increase this to 10,000, maybe even more once your competitive spirit kicks in. Here are my 10 top tips for turning 4,000 steps into 10,000:
1
Start with a few extra steps while brushing your teeth in the morning - aim for 100 steps and you may also find your teeth are getting a better clean too.
2 3
Even a 15 minute walk with the dog can add up to 1,000 steps.
Walking the children to school rather than driving (if feasible) can add another 1,000-3,000 steps.
6
Take a 15 minute walk in your lunch break for some fresh air and clock an extra 1,000 steps.
7 8
Taking the stairs, rather than the lift, adds about 200 steps.
When you get home at night, before going into your house, a lap around the block will notch up another 300 steps.
4
9
5
10
Pacing when you are chatting on your mobile phone can add another 500-1,000 steps a day. At work, walk to speak with your colleagues rather than call, and add up to 500 steps a day.
Be inefficient with daily tasks! Take laundry upstairs in two trips rather than one will take 400 more steps. During ad breaks, get up and walk or climb the stairs for 3 minutes. 4 ad breaks could easily add a further 1,000 steps to your total. URBAN FOX JUNE 2015 25

HEALTH & WELLBEING
HERE COMES THE
The sun is out, the sky is blue, there’s not a cloud to spoil the view, so why do some of us find summer so depressing?
OK, there’s keeping the kids entertained for six weeks or more, the spiralling cost of a family holiday, and the ever popular sport of beach body shaming. But for some people, helpful lists of child-friendly activities, bagging a bargain last-minute break, even miraculous swimwear that banishes wobbly bits won’t come close to beating summertime blues. For sufferers of “reverse SAD”, the perplexing cousin of Seasonal Affective Disorder more usually associated with dark winter days, summer is the worst season. Psychologists believe that this form of depression might be caused by the seasonal change from spring to summer or sensitivity to the (usually feel-good) chemical serotonin which increases with exposure to sunlight. Symptoms which might signal summer SAD include:
• • • • • • • • • •
Inability to cope with heat Dislike of bright sunlight Anxiety Changes to appetite Insomnia Feelings of hopelessness Irritability Loss of interest in activities Difficulty concentrating Social withdrawal
Boden
Cruel Summer to Summer Breeze Suggestions to help beat summertime blues. Keep Your Cool There’s a reason we use the phrase “hot and bothered”! So at the first sign of overheating, open windows and drink plenty of water. If you’re not near a window at work, take a fan with you. And, if light gets you down, it’s OK to make like a celeb and wear your sunnies indoors, tilt the blinds or draw the curtains. Step It Up Exercise produces endorphins which increase our general sense of wellbeing. Start with our tips to take 10,000 steps a day on page 25 and build up to regular exercise. If it’s too warm outside, hit an air conditioned gym or take a dip at the local swimming pool. Be Mindful With their emphasis on breathing, concentration and smooth movement, mind calming activities like yoga, pilates and tai chi can be effective in fighting depression. Try meditation or just focus on positive images to relieve anxiety at your desk.
Eat Happy According to the ad, you’re not you when you’re hungry! And for once, good quality chocolate which contains mood improving tryptophan, might be the answer. You can also boost your body’s production of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters with foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids and B vitamins including poultry, meat, fish and milk. Aspartame and other artificial sugars depress serotonin levels so get your sweet fix from figs instead. Diarise It Research shows that planning activities, including routine and pleasurable ones, raises your mood and can successfully ward off depression. So schedule regular time for activities you enjoy. Seek Support As understanding increases, so does the support available so, if you’re concerned about Summer SAD or any type of depression, talk to your GP or a counsellor. URBAN FOX JUNE 2015 27

Tips from the
HOMES & GARDENS
POTTING SHED A little gardening know-how from Mark Goddard at Coles Plant Centre
I’d like to plant some hanging baskets to add some colour to the garden throughout the summer, any tips on how I can make mine stand out? To get the very best out of your hanging baskets, be sure to use good quality compost (nice and fluffy to the touch) when planting. As hanging baskets have very restricted soil space and lots of plants competing for water, it’s a good idea to purchase some ‘swell gel’ from your local garden centre, which will aid in the water retention of your baskets. This product holds moisture in the compost and significantly reduces the water stresses on the plants. Alternatively you can purchase moisture control compost which will already contain the swell gel. Due to the limited soil space available, your plants will benefit from some added nutrients, mixed in with the
compost. Slow release feed, such as Osmacote, will continue to feed your plants with nutrients throughout the growing season, ensuring they look their best. If you really want to give your baskets a boost, add some liquid tomato food or liquid seaweed extract every two weeks or so. With their high potassium content they’ll give you an abundance of blooms throughout the summer. Finally carry out regular deadheading throughout the season, which will encourage strong new flowers and keep your baskets looking lovely and fresh.
I have a very small, walled garden in which I love to attract birds and wildlife. What sort of plants could I use to create more of a ‘Wildlife Garden’? There’re no end of plants that are great for attracting wildlife into the garden, but also give plenty of interest throughout the rest of the year. Pyracantha for example produce fragrant flowers in spring which are loved buy bees, butterflies and all manner of insects, before being covered in red, orange or yellow flowers in autumn, a favourite of any small bird.
crimson berries in autumn, Cotoneaster is a must in any wildlife theme.
A plant that is often overlooked when designing a garden is Cotoneaster; this family contains small trees, shrubs and climbers, all of which are incredibly versatile. With attractive white flowers in spring and
Previously overlooked due to it’s size and aggression, there are now some fantastic varieties of Dwarf Buddleja available which will flower prolifically throughout the summer months.
For the bees in particular, Lavender are a great option for bringing a bit of colour and life into the garden. The blue/grey aromatic foliage is present all year round, with blue, purple, white or pink flowers present for long periods throughout the year.

Mr. Holmes
Fri 19 Jun - Thu 2 Jul at The Phoenix 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org.uk Set in post-Second World War Britain, Sir Ian McKellen plays an aging Sherlock Holmes now retired and tending bees in a cottage near the south coast. Aware that his famous intellect is succumbing to dementia, Holmes sets out to write his own detective story based on his final case. Delving into his hazy memories to pull out facts relating to the disappearance of an enigmatic woman thirty years ago, the film switches between flashbacks that tease out details behind the great Detective’s feelings of guilt, and the current day as Holmes searches for a cure for his failing memory in Japan.

From the producers of The King’s Speech and the director of Gods and Monsters, Mr. Holmes is a prestige British picture with a brilliant central performance from McKellen. His detective is a world away from the flashier modern day Sherlock’s of Downey Jr. and Cumberbatch; grumpy and melancholy rather than eccentric, his
ageing Holmes feels real. When pushed by his housekeeper’s young son to piece together the case, it is a joy to see life return to Holmes’ eyes as he believes the game may again be afoot. A stately, gently moving film with a fine supporting cast that includes Laura Linney and Frances de la Tour, Mr. Holmes is a worthy addition to the Sherlock pantheon.

LIFE & WORK
HOLIDAY
MODE
The thought of going on holiday is exciting, but the run up to taking time off can be very hectic, says Amanda Daly of Dalycom. This month she shares tips, on how to use our mobile devices to help ease pre-holiday pressures and make time away from the office more relaxing Are you making the most of available help? There’s a massive range of free and low cost apps out there to make your holiday plans run smoother. Some of my favourites include ‘Kayak’ which makes it easy for me to search for hotels, flights, and car rentals, all from one place; ‘Yelp’ which tells me where the best bars, restaurants, and shops are, no matter where I am in the world. And if like me you hate packing, tell ‘Packpoint’ where you’re going, as well as when and why, and the app makes some handy suggestions as to what to take. Effortlessly simple! Is your profile set on ‘Holiday Mode’? Most telephone systems and email applications allow you to set a profile such as “In a Meeting”, “Out of the Office”, “On Leave” etc. If this facility is available, use it. This helps notify everyone you are on holiday and weed out those non-essential calls and emails. The last thing you want is to get nuisance business calls.
Have you increased your mobile data bundle? Using apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter to keep in touch with friends is great fun, but can easily eat up your data allowance. The last thing you want is to come home to a very expensive mobile bill from your mobile provider. Don’t forget to check your mobile phone and tablet data allowance before you travel and upgrade if necessary.
“Make it a habit to back your devices up every so often to ensure your photos are stored away safely”
Have you activated your international roaming profile on your mobile handset? There’s nothing worse than finding out you can’t use your mobile phone whilst abroad. Make sure you contact your service provider to setup international roaming prior to your holiday, so you can share those holiday snaps on social media whilst you’re away!
Is all of the data on your mobile phone and tablet backed up? Losing a mobile device can be distressing especially if you have been taking memorable holiday snaps. Make it a habit to back your devices up every so often – on your laptop, tablet or cloud - to ensure your photos are stored away safely.
If you have CCTV at home or at work, is your remote access set up? Most CCTV systems will have a mobile app that lets you log in to your cameras wherever you are. So whilst sipping that cocktail on the beach it will always give you the added peace of mind that your property is safe. If a situation does arise, you can see what is happening and act. This can work for both your personal business premises and your home.
Finally don’t forget to unwind, relax and enjoy the long awaited break from the routine. URBAN FOX JUNE 2015 59

Animal Attraction
Teenagers might love scaring themselves silly on hair-raising rides, but theme parks offer plenty of gentle fun for little ones too. They’re often set in beautiful grounds, ideal for intrepid explorers and wholesome picnics, with indoor and covered attractions to save the day should the British weather take a turn for the worse. Check out: Twinlakes in Melton Mowbray or venture further afield to Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park.
From feeding a lamb to riding a horse, stroking a snake to meeting a meerkat, there are plenty of ways to keep young animal lovers happy. And some venues provide outdoor and soft play areas for your little monkeys to run off steam before the journey home. Check out: Stonehurst Family Farm and Tropical Birdland in Leicestershire or trek across the county border to Twycross Zoo.
Science Crazy Whether their interest is outer space, transport, engineering or all things scatalogical, you’ll satisfy even the most enquiring mini-Einsteins with a fun, informative and interactive science-centred day out. Check out: The National Space Centre and Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester or Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville.
Culture Vultures Much thought has gone into making heritage sites, museums and arts centres more family-friendly in recent years. Many now run special children’s events to introduce them to art and digital culture, local or ancient history, palaeontology or archaeology, often in grand settings without so much as a shhh or a tut to dampen their enthusiasm. Check out: Leicester’s New Walk and Newarke House Museums, Belvoir and Ashby Castle, and Phoenix Arts.

Back to Basics Our happiest childhood memories are often of the simplest things like picnics, playing games in the park and bike rides with friends. Let your children discover these joys for themselves with low-cost playdates and outdoor antics this summer. And finally: Experts say that giving older children time alone to watch TV or play computer games and younger ones time to engage in imaginative play is good for them. So don’t feel guilty if you’re not entertaining them 24/7. Happy holidays!

Travelling
LIGHT You’ve found the perfect destination, booked your flights, checked your passport is valid and bought your holiday essentials. Now for the real challenge: fitting everything into your suitcase! We asked the travel experts at Cellini for advice on the best packing strategies to save time, space and your sanity!
First you need to choose the best style of luggage for your journey. Suitcases with soft outer shells are the most lightweight and expandable, but your contents and the luggage itself, will be more vulnerable to damage and creasing. Hard outer shells offer the best protection with brands such as American Tourister and Samsonite providing models that are both durable and lightweight, which means you don’t have to worry about exceeding your baggage allowance.
If you are flying to your destination, make sure you check the luggage weight and size restrictions for your airline and always weigh your full suitcase to ensure that you are within the regulations. Make sure that your contact details are clearly marked on your luggage and use a padlock for added security. Pack all valuables in your carry-on luggage, not inside any bags that will be checked in.
Then roll up your smaller items and place those on top. Rolling will minimise creasing and also means that you can fill any awkward spaces around the suitcase. Remember, you can always fill your shoes to save more space. Put all fragile items between soft clothing to protect them. Make sure that any toiletries are in secure containers so that they don’t leak and double bag them to be extra safe.
Always research your destination before travelling. The temperature, facilities and activities available will have a big impact on what you need to take with you.
Your towel can then be folded flat and laid on top of everything, helping keep all the contents in place.
If you’re prone to over-packing, take a selection of clothes that you can mix and match together over the course of your break.
If you’re only taking hand luggage, pack all travel documents and anything you will require during the journey somewhere that is easily accessible.
Start by placing any bulky or heavy items at the bottom of your suitcase. This will prevent your more delicate clothes from getting crushed and creased underneath them.
Hopefully once you reach your destination, your clothes won’t be creased. However, if they are, hang them in the bathroom while you take a shower. The heat and steam will make any wrinkles drop out.
Next, carefully fold any jackets and longer items and add them to your suitcase. You can always place underwear in the jacket’s shoulders to maintain its shape.
And last but not least, always make sure you leave enough room for those musthave souvenirs!

My parents were very hardworking, one working day shift and the other nights to ensure we never went without the important stuff. Living in one of the only council estates in a nice middle class village meant that most of my friends were better off than me, which just made me strive to better myself. I was always an active, sporty kid that hung around with the boys playing football and climbing trees rather than playing dress up with dolls. One of my earliest memories is jumping out of a tree, landing on a plank and a large nail going through my foot. Apparently I was always in the wars and had to give everything a go! After leaving school, I studied Law at Nottingham Trent University. I’m not sure why I chose Law, I think I just picked the most prestigious job I could think of and thought right I’ll do that! As part of the course, I spent a year working in a law firm, which was fortunate as I quickly realised that sitting at a desk doing paperwork was not for me. Having decided I didn’t want to be a solicitor, after completing my degree I travelled around Central and South America. Once home I worked in recruitment and restaurant management, before accepting a graduate job in legal sales. A few years later I met my now business partner Dan Senior. Dan was a personal trainer and keen to set up his own training studio, which would stand out and deliver a better service than the industry norm. His talent and enthusiasm, in conjunction

What relaxes you with the stress and My bonkers dog Stel a monotony of my job, won me over and Nutrafit was born. The original plan was that I would manage the gym but when clients started asking for a female trainer, I saw a great opportunity to retrain in fitness and nutrition and offer female only services in a private studio. I’ve now got the best of both worlds, 50% business management and 50% helping others achieve their goals.
We managed not only to survive but thrive during the recession and although I may work long, unsociable hours, at 40 I’m happier, healthier, fitter (and thinner) than I have ever been. There’s nothing like working for yourself and building something new. In addition to the launch of our popular female only Metabolic Weight Loss Clinic, our refurb project is almost complete. The new look studio will house other health, beauty and wellness providers offering a more holistic approach to health. I’m really excited! If I had any regrets about the industry, it’s the vicious circle that people get into jumping from one weight loss plan to the next and never making any real progress. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is avoiding fad diets and learning what suits you, your body and your lifestyle, as no one solution fits all. And it doesn’t have to take over your life, as being healthy, consistent and active can be fun and tasty too!
