to BALAYAGE With the Balayage colour trend showing no signs of fading, Gianni Greco of Moda Greco Hair Designers, shares his tips and tricks on how to add a new dimension to your hair.
Translated, the French ‘Balayage’ means ‘to sweep’. In hairdressing terms it relates to the process of highlighting hair in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking, multi-tonal effect. Balayage can be undertaken using a variety of freehand techniques - hands and brush - paddle boards, foils or a combination of each. With Balayage the hair is darker at the root and blends down into lighter ends. Your natural hair is also weaved out to add contrast and multi-tones towards the mid-lengths and ends of your hair.
Ask your colourist about ‘colour contouring’ which is a bespoke service that draws attention to certain areas of the hair by adding lighter or darker tones, the same way as makeup on your skin.
Discuss a long term plan with your colourist, covering your next three salon visits. Your end goal could be achievable, but maybe not in one salon visit.
Tiger Eye Balayage is set to be big for 2017. Taking its name from the Tigereye rock, gorgeous bronze, gold and dark brown stripes are transported directly into your hair.
Gradually move towards your desired shade, getting lighter each time. This is healthier for your hair than undergoing 2 or 3 lightening sessions in quick succession. Your hair will thank you for it.
The Balayage images you see in magazines are styled. Styling adds depth, contrast and breaks up the colour. Ask your stylist to show you a basic technique to create movement and/or waves. It’ll make the world of difference.
Pick a colour that suits your skin tone. If you’re darker skinned ash blondes might not compliment you. Consider warmer colours such as caramels, golden and butterscotch blondes.
Work with your natural root colour where possible. Your colourist can change the root colour of your Balayage, but it will not wear well, re-growth will be more noticeable and additional maintenance will be needed.
Be realistic with your colour goals. Silvers, greys and metallics are in vogue but unless your hair is very light blonde or and has been pre-lighted to a very light shade, it is unlikely you will get this look. URBAN FOX APRIL 2017 19

How NEAT
are you?
Forget New Year, New You, early spring is the best time to start your weight loss plan, says Nutrafit’s Rebecca Watts. Longer days, warmer temperatures and fresh air all boost your chances of success. This month she tells us how being NEAT can help shed those post-Winter pounds. For most, a weight loss plan means healthy eating and exercise. When thinking about getting more active this spring you might consider either joining a gym or starting to run. All exercise is great for your health and should always be encouraged but from a fat loss point of view can be limited just on its own. The energy you use can be broken down into Exercise Activity (running, cycling) and Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (or NEAT), which is essentially the movements you make every day to undertake your work, family and life commitments. It is the energy you expend when we’re not sleeping, eating or exercising and can include sitting, standing up, walking around at work, typing and even fidgeting. But how does it help you to lose weight? If you go to the gym, run, swim, or play a sport, you might exercise for approximately 5 hours per week. Most of us are awake for around 112 hours a week, so if you’re exercising for 5 of those, what
are you doing for the other 107? The key to long term weight management is making those other 107 hours count! Energy used can vary hugely from person to person through our choices and lifestyle. It’s said that NEAT energy expenditure could vary in individuals by as much as 2000 calories a day and many believe has a large role in the obesity problem. For example if you drive to work, sit at a desk all day, then pick up a take away on the drive home and sit in front of the TV for the rest of the evening, you will not be expending a great deal of NEAT energy. On the other hand, if you walk to work, spend most of the day standing up, get home and walk the dog, cook dinner and do some cleaning, before sitting down at 9pm, your NEAT energy will be a lot higher. But how do you increase your NEATness? Here’s 10 small things you can do (even at work) to get started…

Park at the far end of the car park and walk. Whenever possible take the stairs and not the lift. Stand when on the phone or pace if cordless. Every couple of hours, get up and stretch. If waiting – for a train, or an appointment - pace rather than sit.

Use a Fit Ball as a chair.
Do some chair exercises. Get a standing desk or do parts of your job standing. Get up and move during the TV ad breaks. Make like a child and fidget more.

SPRING INTO ACTION
It’s the perfect time of year to head outside for a workout. Exercising outdoors boosts the immune system, makes you feel more energised, and more inclined to do it again, compared to slogging it out in the gym. Whether it’s walking in the woods, running or cycling, get moving!
DITCH THE SUGAR
If you want to beat fatigue, cut back on sugar. Instead eat more protein (lean meat, fish, nuts) and fibre (fruit, veg and wholegrain carbs) to help balance out blood sugar levels and avoid those energy slumps and the urge to snack.
EAT SEASONAL FOODS
Vegetables and fruit are jam-packed with vitamins, minerals and iron, giving your body a much-needed boost. Increase your intake by including fruit and veg at every mealtime, covering around half of your plate. Plus replace 1 meat meal a week with a vegetarian alternative.

Lamb recipes are full of the taste of spring but we’re hotting things up with these deliciously spicy dishes from Waitrose. They’re sure to pack a punch. URBAN FOX APRIL 2017 27
LAMB ROGAN JOSH Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 255g pack The Spice Tailor Rustic Rogan Josh 4 lamb leg steaks 400g can chick peas, drained and rinsed 100g bag watercress, large stalks removed 4 salad onions, thinly sliced 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp cumin seeds, toasted 150g Greek-style natural yogurt 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds

rush the whole spices from the C pack in a pestle and mortar or with a rolling pin, then mix into the base sauce.

Cook the lamb under a preheated grill or barbecue for 6-8 minutes, turning once or twice and basting with the remaining sauce until nicely browned but still a little pink in the centre. Transfer to a warm plate and leave to rest for 5 minutes.

SPICED LAMB PASTIES Preparation time: 35 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 carrot, cut into small dice 250g lean lamb mince 1 tbsp curry paste 150ml lamb or chicken stock 200g frozen garden peas 250g pack cooked basmati rice 320g Jus-Rol Light Puff Pastry Sheet 2 tbsp semi-skimmed milk 1 tbsp Bart Nigella seeds

Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion and carrot for 4-5 minutes until softened. Stir in the lamb, curry paste and stock and simmer for 15 minutes until the liquid evaporates.

SPEEDY LAMB TAGINE Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 tsp vegetable oil 1 red onion, sliced 400g Welsh diced lamb leg Bart Moroccan-style salt 1 green chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced 300g Red Choice tomatoes, roughly chopped 400g can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 8 soft dried apricots, quartered 600ml hot chicken stock 300g couscous Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon Fresh coriander leaves, to serve

eat the oil in a large frying H pan. Add the onion and lamb, season generously with the Moroccan-style salt and stir-fry for 5 minutes.

dd the chilli and tomatoes A and cook for 5 minutes until the tomatoes are softened and pulpy. Stir in the cannellini beans, apricots and 150ml of the stock and simmer for a further 10 minutes.

eanwhile, place the couscous M in a large heatproof bowl with the lemon zest and juice and cover with the remaining 450ml hot stock. Set aside for 5 minutes until the liquid has been absorbed.

Break up the couscous with a fork, spoon between 4 shallow bowls then top with the tagine. Scatter with coriander leaves to serve.

Lemon Simnel Cupcakes Makes: 12 Ingredients: 500g pack marzipan 150g muscovado sugar 150g unsalted dairy butter, at room temperature 2 large free range eggs 150g self-raising flour 125g mixed fruit 2 lemons, both zested and juice of 1 Icing sugar to dust 2 tbsp apricot jam
Method: Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with muffin cases. Cut off 80g piece of marzipan, set aside the larger piece for later. Cut the smaller piece into 12 equal chunks. Place the sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl; beat together until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping the bowl down after each addition. Fold in the flour along with the mixed fruit, lemon juice and half the zest. Add a spoonful of mixture to each case, place a chunk of marzipan in the centre, then top each evenly with the rest of the mixture. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, until risen and golden, then allow to cool on a wire rack. Sprinkle icing sugar on the work surface and roll out the remaining marzipan. Using a small cookie cutter (about 6cm) cut out 12 circles, saving the leftover marzipan. To decorate, remove the paper cases. Brush on a little apricot jam, then place on the circles of marzipan. Shape the leftover marzipan into 12 balls, place one in the centre of each cupcake, using some jam to help secure. Place on a baking tray and pop under a hot grill for 1 minute until the marzipan is lightly browned. Finish with a small sprinkling of lemon zest. Images and recipes: Waitrose
Happy Easter Biscuits Makes: 30 Ingredients: 175g Stork, diced 50g golden caster sugar 50g icing sugar 1 medium free range egg ½ tsp ground mixed spice 300g plain flour, plus extra for rolling Coloured icing and sprinkles, to decorate Method: Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Beat together the Stork and both sugars until creamy, then mix in the egg. Add the spice and flour and mix to make a firm dough. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 2-3mm and stamp out biscuits using Easter cookie cutters. Transfer to baking sheets that have been lined with non-stick parchment and bake for 8-10 minutes until pale golden. Leave to cool on the tray for 1-2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Decorate the biscuits with coloured icing and dust with a few sprinkles. This is messy fun - messy for you, fun for the kids. If you’re tired or premenstrual I suggest hopping onto options 3, 4 or 6. If in positive spirits then get out the cardboard boxes, paints, playdoh, stickers and all those craft kits they got for birthdays. Lay everything on a large covered table and let them loose. Now don't be concerned if you find yourself perfecting your playdoh breakfast long after the kids have wandered off - the fried egg is easy but the baked beans take forever!

The trick here is to prolong the activity, choosing both easy and really hard places to hide the eggs! Wet their appetite and stick a few in flower pots and bushes but then get imaginative. Just remember, the more difficult to find - the longer they’re entertained. So dig

For years Sienna Miller’s private life was of more interest to the world’s media than her acting career, but at 35, Miller has noticed the tide has turned – and at long last the roles she has always coveted and deserved are starting to come her way.

With her sleek blonde locks, iconic boho style and ‘It Girl’ status, the role of a glamorous love interest is certainly not new territory for Sienna Miller. But when it came to her performance as a gangster’s moll in the Ben Affleckdirected Live by Night, even the New York-born beauty was somewhat taken aback by the decision to cast her as the “damaged, broken, wrong-side-of-thetracks” Emma Gould. “At the time I’d just had my daughter and I was like: I never get cast in parts like this!” the 35-year-old exclaims. “Everybody just thinks I’m that hippy English girl with blonde hair. So when I got the script I instantly loved it – who doesn’t want to play the bad girl? If I’m watching, I’ll always gravitate to the bad girl; she’s got the interesting story. I want to know what it’s like to be her. So this is my own little way of experiencing that.” For Miller, Live by Night also gave the star a chance to bring together her acting career with her off-screen persona as a fashion icon to many. “I love the prohibition Twenties era and I love gangster films – the world was beautiful,” she says. “I think that era is one of the most glamorous moments in time, especially that flapper fashion. Women suddenly took off their corsets and cut off their hair; they wore short skirts. It was such a liberating time, sartorially.”
Live by Night is just the latest in a slew of films that have taken Miller to a darker and grittier place artistically. Though her early career showed hints of this trajectory, such as her part in 2004 crime thriller Layer Cake, the majority of Miller’s roles came in rom-coms like that year’s Alfie or dramas such as 2008’s The Edge of Love.
Arguably the turning point came in 2014 when she appeared in Bennett Miller’s biographical drama Foxcatcher, which received widespread critical acclaim. Further performances in American Sniper later that same year and 2015’s bizarre High-Rise heralded a new chapter. Interestingly, Miller credits this offering of more dramatic roles with her turning 30 – turning on its head the idea that getting older is viewed negatively in Hollywood. “There’s so much talk about this obsession with youth in the industry but actually, it’s only when you age and get into your 30s and 40s that the challenging work comes your way,” she reveals. “I didn’t realise it then, but your 20s are quite restrictive as an actor.
“I don’t feel like my ability changed and it’s not like I suddenly learned how to act; I think what happened was I got a little bit more respect.” You’re often only considered for the attractive bit on the side and not much more. I made a decision once I turned 30 to really try to do characters…and show versatility and range because there’s always going to be someone younger in those roles. But when you turn 30, the really great roles start to pop up and you have to relinquish vanity and focus on not being as recognisable on screen.”
Although the constant tabloid interest in her high-profile relationships with Jude Law and Balthazar Getty meant Miller’s on-screen career was often left in the shade, the talent has always been there. “Looking back, I was nominated for best actress at the Spirit Awards when I was just 24 years old,” she says with a frustrated shrug. “I don’t feel like my ability changed and it’s not like I suddenly learned how to act; I think what happened was I got a little bit more respect. I felt like people didn’t look at that or want to take me seriously because I was fashionable or had a famous boyfriend. I think perception is a huge part of this business and I understand that. I was really famous in a celebrity way.” Armed with her new sense of professional admiration, Miller’s next project takes her back to the hallowed boards of London’s theatre scene. The star is no stranger to the demands of live performances, having played the role of Sally Bowles – made iconic by Liza Minelli in 1972 – in a 2015 Broadway show of Cabaret. “I’m playing Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in the West End,” she reveals. “I’m very excited about that and I’m rather excited to come back to London for the summer because it’s a lovely excuse to be with my family and friends.”

Refresh FOR SUCCESS Spring has sprung but Kirsty France is drowning in bits of paper, emails and those interesting articles that she hasn’t had time to read. It’s time for a spring clean! Frankly, my whole house is in need of a major declutter, but I’m leaving that job to Zoe Hubbard – check out ‘A Place for Everything’ on page 43. Instead, having read recently (one article I did manage to squeeze in) that having an untidy desk covered in clutter could be stopping me achieving the business success I want, I’ve decided to start by spring cleaning my home office. If you’d like to join me, here’s what I’ll be doing…
Tackle the emails
I must admit, I started on this one a while ago when I realised that I couldn’t find the things I actually wanted to read because there was so much rubbish in my inbox. I now flag the emails that need dealing with, like information from clients or events that I want to book but don’t have time to deal with straight away. If I want to save something for reference I create a folder for it. Other than that I just read and delete. I’ve also discovered a handy service called unroll.me that scans your inbox for subscriptions so you can unsubscribe with one click.
Sort out the business cards
I do a fair bit of networking and whilst it’s great for business it also leaves me with

little piles of business cards everywhere. So, I’ve sorted them into boxes with dividers for clients, potential clients and people I might need in the future so I can find them when necessary. I’m also (gradually) adding them to my email contacts. Of course, keeping it all up to date means doing some filing…
I love having a timetable but I’ve got out of the habit, so now I’m starting again. Face the filing
I admit it, I hate filing. But I hate it a lot less if I do it a bit at a time. That way I can find my receipts when it comes to doing my tax return. I’ve also found that I get a lot of printed information, both from clients and new contacts. At the moment it’s everywhere so I’m going to start sorting it into folders rather than building a health and safety nightmare under my desk. I really don’t want to have to reprimand myself at a later date. The paperwork would be a nightmare!
Invest in new stationery
I confess; I have a serious stationery addiction, especially for notebooks and pens. But my clutter problem won’t go away if I don’t invest in some hardware. I have printed samples of work (including, of course, back issues of Urban Fox) as well as those handy information leaflets that I’m bound to need one day. So I’m taking inspiration from my school days and former life in an office and getting it all into folders with some lovely new page dividers. Now, where did I put those plastic wallets…
Organise my diary
Finally I’ve realised that there’s no point saving anything for later if it’s just going to sit there forever. Organising my diary doesn’t just mean writing appointments down and blocking out time for paid work. It also means making time to read the articles, do the filing and sort out the emails. Hardy plants
As the weather in Britain, and around the world, continues to become more extreme, gardeners are changing the way they buy and grow plants in their gardens. The rise of ‘hardy’ plants is not only due to their ability to withstand extreme weather and provide longlasting colour to the garden, but their ‘hardiness’ also means they’re more likely to survive at the hands of inexperienced gardeners. They are a low maintenance option, requiring little knowledge on how to cultivate them.
Multi-purpose plants
One of the big planting trends for 2017 is shrubs. As outdoor space becomes increasingly limited, plants need to work for their spot in the garden. The Virbunum Kilimanjaro Sunrise, celebrated at Chelsea in 2016 is a great multi-purpose shrub offering blossom, autumn colour and berries. Hebe also perform in the garden all year round, with Midnight Sky and Heartbreaker varieties predicted to be the most popular as they look great and are particularly easy to grow.
Quirky plants
This year many garden centres will be introducing a new range of quirky plants for gardeners looking for something different to experiment with. Grow your own examples include the Sweet Colossus strawberry plant that bears huge fruit the size of your palm, the Lemon Cucumber that produces
wonderfully sweet and unusual lemonshaped cucumbers - perfect for a gin and tonic - and the Cucamelon that grows tiny fruits that look like melons but taste of cucumber.
Ready-made plants
Look out for the rise of the pre-planted pot. They come in multiple varieties and are perfect for creating visual impact for those with limited outdoor space. They don’t require soil to grow and come in a range of shapes and sizes, meaning they can be used in spaces as small as a courtyard or balcony. They also provide a great alternative to cut-flowers in the home, as they are more sustainable and much longer lasting.
House plants
Whether you think houseplants are a throwback that should remain firmly in the 70s, or a green home trend that you can’t wait to get involved with, foliage in our front rooms is here to stay; and with Pantone choosing ‘Greenery’ as their colour of the year, it’s no surprise that people are bringing the outdoors in. Well-loved varieties like the Calatheas and Monstera remain popular, while ‘succulents’ and ‘air’ plants are an easy way for beginners to hop on the houseplant trend.

“Being in a ballet company, rehearsing and training hard every day was all consuming” says former principal ballerina, turned Pilates instructor Jane Fletcher.
I was born in Wallasey, but grew up in Alwoodley, a suburb of Leeds. My parents were foster carers, so although I was an only child, our house was always full of children. We’d all line up outside the bathroom in the morning so that Mum could make sure we were washed, dressed, fed and ready in time for school. I wanted to be a ballerina from an early age. I went to a local dancing school and would practice every day, doing the splits and dancing around our living room on the parquet floor, pretending it was a stage. Later I won a scholarship to attend a centre for ballet excellence in York, ran by former ballerina Louise Brown. Louise told my parents that I had talent and should audition for The Royal Ballet School. The first local audition went well and I was invited to attend the final stages in London. The Royal Ballet School was the place of my dreams; but there were lots of like-minded girls at the audition and I instinctively felt competitive. Girls were asked to leave throughout the day, and I was determined that I wouldn’t be one of them. By the end of the day there were six left and insufficient places for everyone. The day the letter arrived telling me I’d been successful was absolutely amazing.
After six years at The Royal Ballet School, I was offered a place with the English National Ballet Company. I was lucky enough to dance my first role with Rudolf Nureyev. He was in the process of staging Romeo and Juliet for the company and after only a couple of days of my being there, he picked me to do a special little piece in Act 1. I couldn’t believe it! My ‘big break’ into dancing a principal role was classic theatre. I was the up and coming corps de ballet dancer who had been chosen to understudy the principal girl, when she became ill just before the opening night. Cue frantic rehearsals so that I could step into her shoes to save the day. A real low point was when I was diagnosed with a scoliosis of the spine that could’ve potentially stopped my career. As an alternative to an operation it was recommended that I tried Pilates, this was to have a huge impact on my life. Aside from Pilates, I also paid for ballet masterclasses so that I could be taught by eminent dancers to improve my technique. One such dancer was Graham Fletcher. I wanted to marry him the first day I met him in the studio! He was a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet Company and had starred in

Don’t forget to write a diary! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS in the West End. He was, and still is a brilliant teacher. I am totally inspired whenever I see him in the studio at his Ballet Associates and Dance Activate programmes teaching his students. I finally hung up my tutu when our son Dylan was three. Initially I taught my own exercise classes – a combination of ballet & Pilates - before moving onto a ‘normal’ job when Dylan started school. But I never gave up doing Pilates and would plan my diary so that I could attend classes after work. I’d always toyed with the idea of becoming a Pilates instructor, but a few years ago I took the plunge, studied parttime and became qualified. I’ve never looked back. My method of teaching Pilates is naturally inspired by ballet and in the future I’d love to capture this and develop it further by training others in my style.
